Love overflows This Valetine’s Day, love is coming in all shapes and sizes. In an unusual twist to a typical Valentine’s date, the team at PetBarn are hosting a matchmaking session to team up residents with adorable pets in need of home. TO SEE HOW YOU CAN FIND YOUR FURRY SOULMATE, TURN TO PAGE 2.
Mates rate high By ERIN SOMERVILLE LOOKING after your mate. It’s a simple philosophy, yet one small, rural community such as Henty has built themselves upon. When Henty resident and local farmer Graham Scholz found himself struggling with depression following the death of his first wife many years ago, it was his love of sport and the mateship that surrounded him in this close-knit community which helped him conquer the dark times. “It was pretty hard, but I got around it by talking about it,” he said. “The problem is people don’t want to talk about it, they clam up and it’s hard. “A lot of people feel ashamed.” Talking about depression is now something Mr Scholz is urging all people to do. When the October 2013 frosts turned a promising bumper harvest into a field of despair for local farmers- many of who were Mr Scholz’s friends, neighbours, and family- he decided it was time to take action. From there, Henty’s Looking After Your Mate group was formed. The group, made up of many different faces of a rural community, meets throughout the year to tackle concerning issues, offer support, and simply create a safe space for people to have a chat. Now, Looking After Your Mate is extending the invitation to farmers, small business owners, manufacturers, and the entire community to attend their Black Dogs Black Cats forum on Friday 13 February and help tackle rural depression. Aimed at rural people struggling with depression or worried about a member of their family or a mate, the forum will feature renowned mind coach Margaret Cutler and beyondblue ambassador Paul Walshe. Health
Henty resident Graham Scholz has turned his experience with depression into a talking point. 134374 professionals will also be on hand to provide advice and guidance. Friday’s event follows on from the inaugural forum’s success last year, highlighting the need to address depression and mental health in rural communities who don’t have immediate access to a wide range of support-
ing services. “I could not get over the amount of people talking to each other after last year’s,” Mr Scholz said. And while Mr Scholz has shared his own experience with depression, he acknowledges that it can affect everyone
in different ways. He can offer only a few simple tips for those who are feeling stressed, anxious, or down, but tips which nonetheless helped him out greatly during his own personal battle. “Go to the pub, have a beer, and
Picture: ERIN SOMERVILLE don’t be so hard on yourself,” he said. “Go and have a talk to a mate. “That’s how we get by, after all, looking after mates.” Black Dogs Black Cats is on Friday 13 February from 4.30pm at Henty Community Club in South Street.

PROBLEM-SOLVING, networking and teamwork are a few things the Albury City youth councillors are well-versed in as they prepare to welcome in some new members. The Youth Council is a group of local young people aged between 14 and 18 who get together once a week to represent the views and act as a voice for young people in Albury. Albury youth councillor Aimee Riley said there were many positive aspects to becoming involved with such an influential group of young people. “We have all come together and work with a team of people who have the same interests in society and wanting to make a difference,” Ms Riley said. “It’s really good because we have the backing of the council so we are able to have a voice and make changes. “There are so many ideas that people like us have and in the community that never get voiced and we are kind of the voice for the youth who don’t have one.”
hear what they have to say.” The Youth Council is set to organise an annual youth forum which will help members to understand the needs of young people and the issues they face in the region. Clean Up Graffiti Day, the Disability Disco and Headspace are just a handful of events the Youth Council gets involved in. Albury youth councillor Alexandra Ward said those who want to make a difference should get involved. “I’ve definitely made more friends and it’s great working with other people in the community, helping out and planning events for the youth,” Ms Ward said. “The disco was really good and I really enjoyed helping out with that. “It is a great opportunity and more young people should do it,” she said. The nominations close on 27 February. Forms are available from Albury City Customer Service or online at alburycity.nsw.gov.au.
Aimee Riley, Chelsea Crichton, Ben Walther, Alexandra Ward, Bebe Berryman, Molly Tresize, and Julian Terblanche are encouraging other young people to join the Youth Council. 134137 Picture: LARISSA KUZEFF Mayor of Albury Kevin Mack stressed the importance of having a group of young people to represent the voices of the youth in the council. “Youth councillors play a re-
ally important role as advocates and spokespeople for their peers,” Mr Mack said. “We want to make sure the council is adequately planning for young people so it’s really important we

Helping youth to find feet TACKLING barriers standing between young people and employment will be the focal point of a forum held on the Border later this month. The North East Local Learning and Employment Network’s (NELLEN) Youth Unemployment Forum is the network’s first forum of this kind after identifying a growing need to support young people in the area. The forum also follows a report released last year identifying Victoria’s Hume region as the fourth worst for youth unemployment in the state. NELLEN CEO Lisa Mahood said the organisation was hoping the forum would help
create better information and strategies to deal with the issue. “It’s easy for people to make assumptions, we want to bring people together and talk from industry perspective,” she said. “We want to be dealing with facts rather than assumptions.” The open-invitation forum will be featuring three guest speakers, as well as workshops. The speakers include New Zealand’s Otorohanga mayor whose shire maintains the lowest rate of youth unemployment in his country, Social Ventures Australia executive director Kevin Robbie who will explore social exchange, and University of Melbourne’s Professor of
Economics Jeff Borland who will bring extensive economic knowledge to the forum. Ms Mahood hopes representatives from prominent local sectors such as education and industry will be in attendance to help better understand barriers between young people and work. “We want local leaders to come together and talk about strategies of how we address this.” Tickets are now available for the Youth Unemployment Forum on 26 February, from 9am to 5pm. To book tickets, call the The Cube Box office on 02 6022 9311, or go online to www.thecubewodonga.com.au/tickets
Teen charged over stabbing
Race to name our speeding hotspots
A TEENAGER has appeared in children’s court this week after allegedly stabbing a man in Albury on the weekend. Police and NSW Ambulance Paramedics were called to a home on Wagga Road at Lavington about 8.15am on Saturday morning following reports a 21-year-old man had been stabbed in his shoulder and upper arm. He was treated at the scene before being taken to Albury Hospital. His condition is not believed to be life-threatening. Following inquiries, a 15-year-old boy was arrested about 9.20am on Saturday at a home in Mate Street, Albury. He was taken to Albury police station where he was charged with reckless wounding, and being armed with intent.
By ERIN SOMERVILLE RESIDENTS tired of seeing lead-footed drivers in their neighbourhood can now dob in a road as a speeding hotspot. AlburyCity and local police are teaming up as part of a Speed Check campaign to help crack down on speedsters in problem areas nominated by residents. A total of five local streets will be selected for the police crackdown based on residents’ nominations. This will see an increase in police patrols, speed cameras, and radar surveillance. The campaign was a success in Albury in 2012, and police are looking forward to seeing results again this year. “It was disappointing (during the 2012 campaign) in the fact that we did catch a number of people speeding,” Albury Police Highway Patrol Sergeant Matt Zemaitis said. The last campaign even nabbed a motorist who was travelling at 104km/h in a 50km/h zone. Police will continue to patrol and monitor speeding on the nominated roads. AlburyCity Council is eager to help police make the city’s roads safer as motorists continue to ignore residential speed limits of 50km/h. “Speeding is seen to be more socially acceptable than drink driving, even though it claims many more lives on NSW roads,” AlburyCity Road Safety officer Lauren Musil said. “If you’re travelling on a residential street and there is no sign, it’s a no brainer. The speed limit is 50km/h.” Nominate a street at http://www.alburycity. nsw.gov.au/ by Sunday 15 February.

THE Victorian Premier has been asked to put the north-east V/Line services back on track following concerns over its failing infrastructure and service reliability. Independent Indi MP Cathy McGowan hitched a ride on the V/Line’s 6.45am service from Wodonga to Melbourne on Thursday to speak with passengers about problems with the service before addressing the issue with Daniel Andrews, along with representatives from V/ Line, Public Transport Victoria and the Public Transport Users Association. Ms McGowan was joined on the journey by Murray MP Sharman Stone. Ms McGowan said she hoped the new Victorian Government would help deliver a better passenger rail service on the Border. This would include an upgrade to carriages and rail lines to increase travel speed, and enable Wi-Fi access to encourage business commuters. “The reason why we’re going is things are getting better and we’ve got a new government in Victoria. We’re going to take advantage of that,” she said. “People will want to come and live in north-east Victoria because we have good trains.” Ms McGowan’s campaign
Indi MP Cathy McGowan talks with BRAG members Bill Traill and Bill Reynoldson about improvements to the Picture: ERIN SOMERVILLE V/Line service. 134208 is backed by the Border Rail Action Group (BRAG), which wants to see faster and more efficient services from the Border to Melbourne. “The median trip is four hours, that’s unacceptable in this day and age,” BRAG convener Bill Traill said. The group claims the $730 million worth of upgrades to the Albury-Melbourne section of the track that were carried out from 2009 under the authority of the Australian Rail Track
Corporation have been detrimental to the line. “We now have an inefficient track in consequence of poor service promises,” Mr Traill said. “We were promised revitalisation of the track and service.” Ms McGowan’s office described last week’s meetings as “productive” with Mr Andrews stating he was committed to completing a state railway strategy, including rural and regional infrastructure and services.
No power spike By ERIN SOMERVILLE with LARISSA KUZEFF BORDER residents are being told they won’t see a spike in electricity prices as the NSW Government prepares to lease just under half of its electricity transmission and distribution businesses. The state’s Resources and Energy Minister Anthony Roberts visited Albury last week to address concerns that his government’s plan to long-term lease 49 per cent of the state assets known as ‘poles and wires’ would hit residents’ wallets. “Anyone that says privatisation or a longterm lease of a power distribution company will lead to higher prices are lying,” he said. Minister Roberts said the Australian Energy Regulator would guide what could be spent on poles and wires. Concerns that privatisation could lead to fewer employment opportunities and apprenticeships - an issue the Electrical Trade Union brought to Albury in September - was something Mr Roberts said his government was addressing, but acknowledged that “further savings could be made”. “We’re working with the unions,” he said. Albury’s Labor candidate Ross Jackson has criticised Mr Robert’s claims that electricity prices will remain stable. “It is fanciful to think that privatisation of poles and wires will not lead to higher prices,” he said. “The private operator, if this deal goes ahead, will have a monopoly over the assets and, like all private operators, will have a fiduciary duty to maximise profits for the shareholders. “It is very likely that the capital for this sale will come from offshore and it is obvious that the comfort of the people of NSW will not be high on their list of priorities if the asset is sold to an overseas corporation.” Meanwhile, Mr Robertson said that the fall of the Liberal Queensland Government has not shaken NSW’s view on privatising the state’s “lazy” electricity assets. “Queensland is a difference kettle of fish,” he said. “We have a strong team.”

IMPROVEMENT can be made to make heavy vehicle transportation more efficient and safer in regional Australia, according to NatRoad president Geoff Crouch. Mr Crouch, who has experience in managing transport services in regional cities such as Wagga Wagga, will be one of many speakers at next month’s Murray Now conference, “How fast is regional Australia Moving?” More than 70 per cent of all domestic freight is transported by road, and with total road freight task expected to triple by 2050, improving these services and infrastructure is an issue Mr Crouch feels the community needs to address now. Mr Crouch said councils like Wagga and Albury were progressing well with the implementation of national and state programs such as Black Spot and Road to Recovery, but feels there was still room for improvement. “These are essential projects but I believe there is always more to be done in terms of growth and progression for these areas,” he said. “Put quite simply, the road freight industry is really a critical enabler for the Australian economy, and it is only going to continue to grow.” The Murray Now conference will highlight regional challenges and attributes based around transport infrastructure, people, property and industry movements.
How fast is regional Australia moving? That will be answered at a forum held in March. 133670 Mr Crouch will be examining a number of ways to help move the regional road freight network forward, which includes continuing the necessity for High Productivity Freight Vehicle (HPFVs) such as BTriples to expand, creating a better economy and improving road safety. “Extra loadings benefit consumers, operators, and the community, as fewer heavy vehicle trips are required for a given task,” he said. “The 2013 Australian Road Deaths database also suggests that in the last 20 years, fatalities in crashes involving heavy vehicles (rigid and articulated) has approximately halved despite the large increase in tkms (tonne-kilometre) carried by road freight.
“For these reasons alone, we need the continual upgrading of the infrastructure of roads, bridges, and appropriate rest areas, to support HPFVs.” Mr Crouch is hoping the Murray Now forum will highlight to the need to improve heavy vehicle access and infrastructure, as well as the growing importance of the industry. Murray Now’s “How Fast is Regional Australia Moving” forum will be held on 12 and 13 March, and include a number of guest speakers to address regional issues such as transport, internet access, and the Asian market. Bookings close on 28 February. Visit http://www.murraynow.com.au/event/how-fastregional-australia-moving/ for more information.

Chess club calls By LARISSA KUZEFF CHECKMATE is a phrase that is heard often at the Albury Chess Club as they ramp up to take on competition from across the state later in the month. Over the next few weeks they are set to play against Wagga Wagga Chess Club, Canberra Chess Club, and inmates at Junee Correction Centre. The club, which dates back to the 1940s, is a small group of members who have a strong passion for the game. Albury Chess Club president Greg Darcy has been an on and off member since the ’80s. He believes the benefits of being part of such a club and playing an opponent across a board is more rewarding than playing against a computer at home. “Playing someone across the board is a lot more friendlier, more enjoyable,” Mr Darcy said. “If you play against the computer the win isn’t necessarily a win because they may have hung up and they could have been cheating for all you know. “I find the best is when you find someone who can actually play chess across the board with you at the level that you can play or above.”

Albury Chess Club members Greg Darcy and Martin Picture: LARISSA KUZEFF Stevens 134125 There is a diverse demographic of chess competitors which even extend to those behind bars. Albury Chess Club is set to travel to the inmates at Junee Correctional Centre in Wagga Wagga to play for a trophy on 15 February. Albury Chess Club member Martin Stevens said playing against inmates taught them valuable skills. “It’s good for the inmates to have some form of outside contact where they are given opportunity and skills to learn the big lesson that if you make a mis-
take in either life or in chess, you can learn from your mistakes and not to repeat them,” Mr Stevens said. “It’s very good for them to develop social qualities rather than antisocial behaviour. “It’s therapeutic for them.” The club is always looking for new chess enthusiasts to join and take part in their annual competition which goes on for a couple of months. “We have a lot of floating interest,” Mr Darcy said. “It’s as social as it is selfrewarding and you have fun.”
Volunteers needed to drive service By LARISSA KUZEFF A CALL out for volunteer drivers to join the Red Cross’ Patient Transport Service in the north-east region has sounded as the retirement of long-term volunteers threatens to leave a gap in the service. The service, which is based out of Wodonga and Tallangatta, is looking for drivers to help out with its vital patient transport service. The service is committed to those in the north-east region who need assistance getting to their hospital and specialist appointments. Red Cross Program Officer Leanne Whitehead said that the service is crucial for many people who don’t have access to transport. “Many of the people we help are unable to drive and they can’t access suitable public transport, or they don’t have family and friends who can drive them to their medical appointments,” she said. “The medical tests and treatments required by our clients are often very serious in nature, such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy, so it really is a vital service.” More than 30,000 people
Red Cross volunteer Robert Groves says he gets so much out of contributing to the service. 134388 Picture: LARISSA KUZEFF nationwide carry out vital work every day as a Red Cross volunteers to help people in need. Local Red Cross volunteer driver Robert Groves, who has been a member for more than 18 months, describes his experience as invaluable. “Being part of the Red Cross I am just a very small part of the world-wide organisation but I feel I am playing a very important part for the humanity of our people that are here in Australia,” he said. “I just love to be able to meet these different people and make their 30 minute or 40 minute journey that I am

with them just that little happier and show an interest in them. “In this country I think it’s good that we are able to help those who are less fortunate then us. “Organisations like the Red Cross, the facilities there to get people to where they need to be, its part of the humanity of things, we just do it because we can.” The Red Cross urges anyone who is interested in becoming a volunteer to get on board. Upper Murray marvels aplenty By ERIN SOMERVILLE THERE is hardly a better way to soak up the magical legend of the Man from Snowy River than in the picturesque Upper Murray Resort region. Tucked away in a beautifully secluded cedar cottage, spend your days enjoying the Man from Snowy River festival in the warm April days, before coming back to your cosy cottage to soak in your very own spa, drink up the mountain views, and enjoy a hearty meal as the autumn night air starts to cool off. If a drive to the gorgeous Corryong township to enjoy a jaw-dropping display of horsemanship later in the year is not on your cards, the resort has plenty up its sleeve to help you make the most of your days. It is still not too late to make a last-minute summer escape, and enjoy the friendly hospitality of the staff and relaxing seclusion the resort offers. Explore the magic Paddy’s River Waterfall on foot, get up close with Bluff Falls, taste the sun-kissed grapes at nearby wineries and revel in the hospitality of a nearby country pub, or bring your clubs and try your luck on a lazy round of golf. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even head underground at the spectacular Yarrangobilly caves and splash in its year-round warm thermal pool. For those simply wanting to relax
and escape the hassles of the everyday life, it is too easy in this secluded corner of the world. Simply switch off your phone, pick up a great book, and enjoy the sound of nature while relaxing by the pool in the last of the summer days. The magic of the Upper Murray Resort is being able to make your days as action-packed or relaxing as you want - the resort is your canvas just waiting for you to paint your dream getaway upon. With the summer holiday period now coming to an end, there is no
reason not to treat yourself to a vacation later in the year. For more information, visit www. uppermurrayresort.com.au, or call them on (02) 6037 1226. With this hideaway so close to your doorstep, you’ll only be sorry you hadn’t discovered it sooner.
WELCOME aboard Martin’s Touring Coach. On this journey to the Red Centre, you’ll stand in the awe-inspiring shadow of Uluru, get up close and personal with wildlife, and even chase the Dreamtime. So buckle up, because there is an amazing adventure ahead. With the team at Martin’s, you’ll get to experience the remote, red, beating heart of the nation that is often too difficult to reach on your own. On day one, you’ll be saying goodbye to Albury Wodonga as you cruise down the Hume Highway and start off your outback adventure in cosmopolitan Melbourne. Enjoy a comfortable overnight stay and dinner, before flying directly to the centre of Australia. When you arrive at Alice Springs, you’ll feel the busy beat of Melbourne you just left is now another world away. Soak up The Alice with a stop at Anzac Hill for a bird’s eye view of the area, and trace the origins of the township at the Old Telegraph Station. A trip to the Alice Springs Cultural Precinct is another highlight of the day, where you will gain a better understanding of the local Aboriginal culture and gape at beautiful Indigenous art. Dinner for the evening is one that will be hard to forget. Just a short journey out of Alice, take a seat at the table at Earth Sanctuary. Here you can enjoy beautiful night-time views of the desert while savouring some delicious bush tucker and revelling in the Dreamtime stories. As you let your meal digest, sit around the campfire, learn to cook damper, and simple look up and enjoy the spectacular night-time show of the outback sky. The following morning, the activities and fun continue. You will explore The School of the Air - a unique Australian institution - before embarking on a journey to see the spectacular West MacDonnell Ranges. As you wander through the grand Standley Chasm, feeling tiny against its golden walls, you’ll wonder why you hadn’t come to see this beautiful hidden corner of the world already as you munch on a barbecue lunch. If nature hadn’t already put on a spectacular-enough show already, the magic of outback Australia continues at Simpson’s Gap. At this permanent waterhole, spot a rare black-footed rock-wallaby or visit the grave of the Reverend John Flynn, who founded the famous Royal Flying Doctor Service. On day four you’ll be sad to say
goodbye to Alice Springs, but great things lie ahead. As you travel south, the highlight of your trip will slowly appear on the horizon in front of you. As the coach draws closer to Uluru, so too does the excitement and magic of this breathtaking natural landmark that is one of Australia’s greatest icons. Check into you comfortable accommodation, and settle in for three days of Uluru fun. The next day, head into the World Heritage Listed Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park and stand in the shadow of the Rock. Rising 348 metres out of the red earth below, and over nine kilometres wide, it is hard to believe that twothirds of this giant still sleeps below the earth’s surface. Take some time at the Cultural Centre, before settling in for the evening for another highlight on your agenda. The Sounds of Silence Dinner is one that you’ll be raving about for years to come. Dining under the canopy of the evening sky with the majestic Ayres Rock as your backdrop, watch the sun set to the sounds of the native didgeridoo. In four magical hours soak up the food, culture, nature, and all the best Uluru has to offer. On day six, catch your breath and store your memories before creating some more. Take to the skies and see Uluru, Kata Tjuta, Yulara, Mt Connor and Lake Amadeus on your own Scenic Flight of the area. When you touch back on ground, you’ll be whisked away to Kata Tjuta (also known as The Olgas), and enjoy a beautiful picnic lunch at Mount Olga Gorge. On day seven the tour drifts south to Coober Pedy, where you’ll get the chance to spend two nights in this famous opal mining town. This culturally diverse and unique township is a delight to explore, and includes a visit of the Old Timers Mine, an underground church, and the colourful low hills of the Stuart Range known as The Breakaways. As you head underground for your meal, you begin to realise how unique your own country truly is. As you resurface from the town’s underground magic, spend the next four days slowly drifting back home through some of the centre’s unique towns. Port Pirie, Burra, Clare, and Mildura all have their own stories to tell, just waiting for you to hear them as you journey back from the Red Centre. As you pull back into Albury on day 12, you’ll have to shake yourself to believe that such a truly magical land lies in your very own backyard.

Fold on this one By ERIN SOMERVILLE Movie: The Gambler Running Time: 111 minutes Rating: MA15+ IF YOU were betting on The Gambler being a great remake of the 1974 original, take your remaining cash now and run. We meet literature professor Jim Bennett (Mark Wahlberg) who is a ruthless gambler. Forget your $20 punts on a game of cards, when this guy steps up to the card table he lives by his ‘all or nothing’ philosophy. Lately, he’s been turning up a whole lot of nothing. The risks don’t always pay off for
Bennett and betting on borrowed money leaves him in a bit of debt. We’re not just talking the kind of debt you rack up when you move interstate, put a bond on a place, and fill it with the cheapest package on offer from Fantastic Furniture. With hundreds of thousands of dollars on the line, as well as the life of his love interest and his own, the stakes suddenly get too high for Bennett. With seven days to pay back his loan, Bennett plays his creditors instead of cards for the week, as he gambles for a second chance in life. There are a lot of dark issues to be explored in this film: depression and suicide, the mentality of a gambling
addict, John Goodman’s naked waistline, however, the film seems to just shallowly bubble over any thing that offers a bit of meat (except Goodman’s waistline), and continues to hurriedly flowing to the finishing credits. Wahlberg’s character is very twodimensional, and with his suicidal tendencies and carelessness it makes it hard to barrack for his survival. His love interest, played by Brie Larson, falls short and she may as well be replaced by a cardboard cutout for all the room that she’s given to develop her character. There are so many great films showing at the moment, so I recommend seeing them first before taking a punt on this one.

Drag City - they will survive A GROUP of outrageous ‘queens’ have moved into the city - Drag City to be exact - and there’s feathers, sequins and glitter eye shadow, and so much more! The talented entourage behind SimonSez Entertainment and Productions have created Queens of Drag City and it promises to delight. So dust off those lashes, put on those pumps and reach for the most fabulous frock you can find - you’re going need it. - Queens of Drag City is coming to the Commercial Club on Friday, 13 February. The soft launch shows of Queens of Drag City have received rave reviews thanks to a combination of comedy, mixed in with a mash-up of musical interludes. When it comes to putting on legendary drag shows, Australia is one of the best, think the 1960s iconic Les Girls and the enigmatic Carlotta, so it’s no surprise that this new original musical is already being welcomed with open arms and standing ovations. This is the brainchild of producer, creator, choreographer and performer Simon Vowles, along with writer Jamie Burgess, and is based on the script by
Joseph Booten and promoter Andrew Malouf. The two have been working solidly on the storyline, organising the soundtrack and the musical mash-up and casting the perfect performers for the roles and much more. No stranger to working on massive shows, Simon has previously been involved with Time Warp, West Side Story, Chicago and Grease. It’s certainly been a labour of love creating a full show, complete with extravagant costumes, changing background footage and an incredible soundtrack that includes music from almost every genre. Simon has been working seven days a week to get the show off the ground and it’s certainly been worth it. “It is really fun,” says Simon. “I love big costumes, I love the witty humour. “There is such a fun element in this show and we’ve catered to everybody straight people, gay people, everything in between people, and to every (musical) genre. “My three words for this show are fun, fast and fabulous. “It is a mash-up musical and for
anyone who loves Glee or the Pitch Perfect type movies, this caters for everybody. “It is layered music on music, it’s all very fast. I’ve tried to cover a whole variety of music genres so that everyone can feel a part of it.” As for the music, Simon wasn’t joking when he said there was something for everyone. The soundtrack is incredibly diverse, with a mash-up of songs from Dolly Parton, Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga, Tina Turner and even, since it’s an Australian musical, a little bit of Cold Chisel. “Because when you think big fabulous frocks, you think Jimmy Barnes ... right?” laughs Simon. Songs such as Dancing Queen, I Will Survive, Love Generation, We Are Family, Sweet Dreams, Ticket To Ride, Leaving on a Jet Plane and Khe Sanh are performed live by the talented cast. “It’s important that it turns it (the show) into a musical, not just a drag show,” says Simon. “It is more dramatic performing live and more personal with the audience. “It is quite challenging for some of the guys vocally, but they are amazing.
Get ready for the sequins and songs and a heartwarming story. “There have been so many comments like ‘you all have such beautiful voices, can you sing a few more songs’ ..."

AN edible exhibition. It’s a concept good enough to appeal to the artist and foodie inside of all of us, and one the team at AlburyCity have successfully carried out over the weekend. As the community wood-fired ovens were cranked up on Saturday morning, locals had the opportunity to digest some food for thought as the LibraryMuseum geared up to launch its BAKE exhibition. This exhibition celebrates traditional methods of baking and links with the opening of the new youth cafe at the Albury LibraryMuseum. The exhibition content, and associated programs and workshops for this exhibition, explore the trend to re-connection with raw foods and cooking from local ingredients. The exhibition comprises of items from the Dunstan Bakery Collection that includes objects from the Federal Bakery, Howlong. It is on show at the LibraryMuseum until Sunday, April 5.

2 Fussel Court, Wodonga
Opportunity is knocking IF you’re looking for an ideal investment opportunity right in the heart of Wodonga, then this is the place for you. This blue chip investment on Hume Street consists of five two-bedroom units on one title, and potential to increase its already-great rental return. The location on this piece of real estate is nothing short of prime, and a very rare opportunity. Set only a block from Wodonga’s High Street, and easily accessible to shops, schools, and restaurants, tenants will never have to worry about parking or transport again.
The 949 square metre allotment provides an annual rental return of $37,960, providing a oncein-a-lifetime investment opportunity. The units also have scope for simple and costeffective upgrades, allowing for an even larger return. There is also an on-site laundry for tenants, an easily accessable and maintable lawn area, and convenient covered parking spaces for residents. The allotment will be going to auction this weekend, so don’t miss out on this amazing opportunity to invest in the heart of Wodonga before it’s going, going, gone.

By CRAIG MCMILLAN BENDED ELBOW CYCLING TEAM THURSDAY night’s Bended Elbow Cycling 16km Time Trial again enjoyed a strong field and fast times on the Old Barnawartha Road course. A warm, still evening changed the characteristics of the course from previous weeks, with little advantage to the turn or back. Each grade was tightly contested with riders steadily improving their times as they build fitness through the series. Aaron Moffat was back at the top of the leader board with a fast 22.44, with Charly McMillan continuing to develop as a Time Trial specialist with a 22.57. Taryn Heather was the fastest in the women’s category with a fast 23.59, from wellknown indoor cycling training instructor Kirrilie DeAthridge, rapidly improving with a 28.21. The real success story of the women’s event was the growth in first time competitor numbers, with Sue Armstrong com-

was led home by Josh Banks in an impressive 27.26 with Ruth Little leading the home the Junior Girls in 34.31. First Master went to Mat Hamblin, showing no signs of slowing up despite a birthday through the week, celebrated with a 23.31. B Grade leader Lindsay French improved his personal best to again win the category in 26.32, with elite rider Declan Gregory also continuing his winning form in the standard bike event with a 25.03. It’s not too late to make a start in the series. Three race cycling licenses are available for anyone looking to compete in any grade, with the Bended Elbow Cycling team on hand for any advice to get you underway. For all cyclists that are keen to try cycle racing the event starts at 6.15pm at the corner of Old Barnawartha and McFarlands roads, each Thursday night until 12 March. Sign on starts at 5.45pm and all abilities are welcome.

The single day riding event is a first in Victoria, which aims to increase the presence of women in all areas of cycling and is focused on making cycling safe. The event was initiated by Cycling Victoria with support by VicHealth, The Squeaky Wheel, and is in charitable partnership with the Amy Gilbert Foundation. The Albury Wodonga event has been co-organised by Peta
Stewart who has teamed up with Osteohealth to host the women-focused event around the local Albury Wodonga area. The Women’s Ride consists of a variety of cycling events across Victoria which includes recreational group cycling, social rides, and cycle racing. The event is fuelled by individuals submitting their own rides on the official website and encourages both men and women to register and get involved. The event will be partnered with other local events around the local region and state-wide, who have a focus
around women’s cycling. Bicycle Superstore in Lavington is one of the many stores who have generously donated their time for the upcoming event. Osteohealth will provide a barbecue breakfast at the completion of the ride for participants and their families. Osteohealth specialises in Cycling Analysis, which promotes women in becoming more active, assist women in returning to activity, and aim to achieve improving their quality of life. The event will be held on Sunday 12 April and is aimed to highlight issues of gender in cycling.

A LARGE crowd headed to the La Trobe University Wodonga Junior Invitational Tournament which kicked off over the weekend. The basketball tournament saw over 140 teams battle it out for 18 different trophies. The tournament, which was held on 6, 7 and 8 February, comprised teams across Country Victoria and Southern New South Wales. Tournament director Tina Palermo said the teams thoroughly enjoyed the experience, while a 2000-strong crowd spread themselves across local stadiums to cheer on the teams. The Border economy also benefited from the competition, with local accommodation being heavily booked out for the event. “The turnout of people was huge with over 500 people in a
stadium,” she said. “The teams enjoyed themselves, they had a ball. “YMCA provided vouchers to the swimming pool and their was an ice-cream machine. “We tried to find ways to make it more enjoyable.” While none of the local teams made it to the grand final, the tournament came just in time to prepare them for the upcoming U16 and U18 Vic Country State Championships on 21 and 22 February. “They were disappointed they didn’t get to win on their home turf, but it was really good practice leading up to the State Championship tournament in Traralgon.“ Wodonga Basketball Association Inc. has sponsored the La Trobe University Junior Tournament for its third year in a row, and feel it is a valuable asset to the area. “It is important because it

Local Sport Middle puts team in order By JAMES McNEIL TALLANGATTA has produced a team effort to put Belvoir on the back foot in finishing with 294 all out at Kelly Park in round 13 of the CAW Provincial Cricket. Five of the Bushies’ middle-order batsmen scored more than 40 with Mat Armstrong topscoring with 63 before being run out by Zac Simmonds. Simmonds was the best with the ball bowling a marathon 30 overs to end up with 5/90. It was a strong effort by Tallangatta and shows its depth through the middle order. It will take a brilliant team effort next week for Belvoir to make the 294 required. Albury hosted Wodonga at Billson Park and managed to make its way to 9/198 and made an aggressive declaration knowing that it needs the win badly. After 71 overs the Titans decided to have seven overs at the reigning premiers. Batting first Kade Brown and Ben Whiteside were the best for Albury with 33 each. Albury struggled for other contributors while Byron Hales was the best for the Bulldogs with 3/43 off 16. Albury will need to provide a brilliant performance next week with the ball to be a chance of winning this game. North Albury is in a sound position against the Wodonga Raiders at Bunton Park where it compiled a score of 250 all out thanks largely to captain Matt Kirkwood’s 65 and Craig Taylor’s 56 n.o. at the end. Bunton Park is generally a batsmen friendly wicket and the Hoppers should have enough to bowl the Wodonga Raiders out. Johnathon Carson was the best with the ball for the Raiders with 3/66 off 20 overs. They will need runs from Marmo, Griffiths, Carson and Stevenson to be a chance in this game. East Albury has made its way to 7/315 at Urana Road playing New City with Aleem Mahmood

the star of the show. Mahmood came in with the crows 2/16 and was out when the score reached 232 after compiling a stylish 137 including 17 boundaries. Kris Milosta also played a solid innings with 49 n.o. Darcy I’Anson claimed two wickets as did Fraser Thomas and New City’s young spin brigade toiled well in good batting conditions. New City will be looking for runs from the likes of Wishart and O’Brien next week to make this total. At Scots School St Patrick's won the toss and batted against Lavington and has ended day one at 9/262.
Nicholas Flood, who opened the batting, top scored for St Patrick’s with 73 including five sixes and seven boundaries while Kane Arendarcikas ended up with 46. The spinners toiled hard for Lavington with Will Heriot 3/86 off 23 and Michael Galvin 2/53 off 20 bowling more than half the overs. Lavington will require plenty of runs from Sam O’Connor, AB Mackinlay and Nathan Brown if it has any chance of chasing this total. There were some good batting results this week in the Provincial competition with most teams that batted first in the box seat. It is getting towards the pointy end of the season now and things are starting to heat up.

The Border Battlefield promises to be a lot of fun.
THE exciting Border Battlefield 3 challenge is set to take off at the end of this month at the Great Aussie Holiday Park in Bowna. The event allows for locals to participate in a challenge that is similar to other large-scale obstacles without having to travel to Melbourne or Sydney. Co-organiser of Border Battlefield 3 Jo Hicks said that the event has attracted more interests every year and so the location is constantly changing for a tougher challenge. “Each Border Battlefield we have to look for a new
location because there are more registrations and inquiries, she said. “So to accommodate the volume of interest, we need different venues to make it bigger and better each time. “Last years course was seven kilometres and 20 plus obstacles, this year the course is 10 kilometres and over 30 obstacles. The day encourages all fitness levels with everyone registering their own team of friends or coming solo. Local sporting teams are even introducing the course into their pre-season training. “The event aims to allow people to challenge themselves on a level they are

comfortable with,“ Ms Hicks said. “It’s as challenging as you want it to be and really depends on how much you want to push yourself. “It’s a high to accomplish something your scared of. The first Border Battlefield was held in February 2013 at The Kinross to give locals the opportunity to participate in an event similar to Tough Mudder but nearer home and less expensive. This year’s challenge will see participants face elements such as mud and water, and tougher obstacles. The event is being held on Saturday 28 February.
