WITH the State Election result still hanging in the balance, grave fears have emerged surrounding the fate of key infrastructure projects on the Southern Downs.

Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) Mayor Peter Blundell said the council was “very concerned” about the effect a change of

government in Queensland would have on critical infrastructure, especially Emu Swamp Dam. “The Emu Swamp Dam project has progressed to its current position because of State and Federal Government support and, while we are significantly down the track with environmental approvals, we have a long way to go before this project is funded and completed,” he said.

Generator spotlight on disaster IN THE event of a natural disaster, there will be one place on the Southern Downs that will not be left in the dark.

A generator has been installed at the Warwick council chambers to provide alternative power to the critical response centre.

Disaster management co-ordinator Mark Saunders said Southern Downs Regional Council has taken a lead role in helping local residents get ready for storm season and has also been very proactive in ensuring its owns staff and services are covered with contingency planning.

Mr Springborg has publicly endorsed Emu Swamp Dam saying he hoped the ALP would not “frustrate the process” if elected.

But Saturday’s stunning election swing away from the LNP has brought hope to staunch objectors of the project who believe the dam has a number of fundamental flaws.

“My hope is that (Labor) would look at the whole process in depth again and reassess it before the money is wasted and the people of Stanthorpe pay for that mistake,” Karin Perisic said, whose farm on the Severn River would be negatively impacted should the dam go ahead.

In providing his election analysis, Cr Blundell said he was “delighted” Mr Springborg has secured a 10th term, but thinks there is “agreement” about the LNP Government’s “arrogance, leadership style and consulting with the people“, which led to its possible defeat.

“Personally I feel hard decisions had to be made and the majority of Queensland voters were not convinced by the LNP policies,” he said.

“I believe we are in an unstable, dangerous and critical time in politics at a state and federal, and even local government, level.”

Mr Springborg is leading the LNP’s negotiations for a minority government, the Courier Mail reported yesterday.

STANTHORPE Chamber of Commerce president John Bylicki says he is concerned that misinformation and misunderstanding of Stanthorpe’s streetscape is causing unnecessary angst among Stanthorpe residents.

The Stanthorpe Chamber of Commerce recently announced it supported the Southern Downs Regional Council’s $82,500 architectural report into improving the Stanthorpe streetscape.

The announcement has drawn criticism from several residents who are calling for more focus on locals and local business.

Speaking with the Free Times, Mr Bylicki said the streetscape was a prudent part of maintaining and improving Stanthorpe’s major asset - “its main street” - and he has stressed the value of maintaining

“The chamber has a streetscape sub-committee that has focused on this issue for quite a few years,’ he said.

“The simple reason is that

the chamber understands that streetscape is important to the economic well being of our town.”

Mr Bylicki said the contract awarded to the landscape architect was for actual work not as suggested by some, for consultancy, research or some form of discussion paper.

“If you build a house, you would use the services of architect/planners to firstly produce a detailed plan for contractors and to satisfy compliance requirements and probably lenders,” he said.

“This is no different other than it's very much larger and requires a high level of specialisation. The work is considerable and not something that can be knocked out by just anyone.”

Mr Bylicki said the plans produced by the landscape architect were critical and he referred to a recent report from the Department of

Infrastructure and Regional Development which made the following points in regards to streetscape.

“Quality of urban design has direct contribution to local economy; quality of urban design attracts visitors, new residents, and employment and quality of urban design impacts lifestyle and community interaction,” he said.

“It covers streetscape for the main street and adjoining areas for years to come. This ensures all future work is true to the intended design and does not become a patchwork of jobs - the council will be seeking funding support from Government and without the detailed plan no submission would be considered.

“Streetscape is a legitimate and proper function of council and mechanisms are in place to assist with funding provided the correct procedures are followed."

THE Labor candidate for Southern Downs Louise Ryan has said she wants to continue advocating for a better Queensland following Saturday’s re-election of Lawrence Springborg.

Ms Ryan said the election results for the Southern Downs seat, which saw a 10.3 per cent swing to Labor, sends a clear message to Mr Springborg.

“He needs to not take our community for granted,” she said.

“I want to continue to advocate for fair workplace conditions for workers, high quality education for

our kids and world class healthcare for everyone.”

Ms Ryan said the most important thing now was turning back the clock on “slashing to frontline services“.

“Frontline services have been slashed across the electorate over the last three years under the Newman LNP Government and this is taking its toll on our community.

“This is something that needs to be urgently addressed,” she said.

RE-ELECTED member for Southern Downs Lawrence Springborg is being told by his ministerial colleagues and senior MPs that he has a clear run to return to the leadership, as debate centres around who will lead the besieged LNP party room in 2015.

While Mr Springborg, who lost three elections as Opposition Leader prior to the rise of the Newman Government, is emerging as the consensus candidate others include Scott Emerson MP and former state treasurer Tim Nicholls.

Mr Springborg has remained decidedly tight-lipped on the matter, pending a final official LNP statement.

Meanwhile, Mr Nicholls who

LNP seeks options for the leadership in minority government or in opposition, depending on how the numbers add up in the race with the ALP to reach the required 45 seats.

As of Tuesday, 3 February, Labor held 43 seats, against 41 for the LNP from last Saturday’s historic State Election.

However, postal votes are yet to be tallied and a total of nine seats are either undecided or likely to be subjected to recounts.

Mr Springborg may be seen as the best option to negotiate with the two re-elected Katter’s Australia Party MPs and Independent Peter Wellington.

Meanwhile, Mr Wellington has confirmed he had spoken to Mr Springborg, but would not say what was discussed.

Young leaders in place THE first meeting of members of the Southern Downs Young Leaders’ Program 2015 was held last Thursday when mayor Peter Blundell welcomed the young leaders to the council.

Southern Downs Regional Council youth development officer Hailey Cosh said the standard of applications for the young leader positions was very high and she looked forward to working with the group throughout the year.

“Council is committed to addressing the needs of youth in our community with emphasis on building partnerships across the region, developing opportunities and encouraging participation to ensure that our diverse range of young people have a voice and the support to become more independent and selfdetermining individuals,“ she said.

This year’s Young Leaders Team

was endorsed by the council at the December 2014 general meeting.

“The 2015 team are ready to take on the opportunity and use the program as an initiative to identify exciting projects for young people across the Southern Downs,“ Ms Cosh said.

“The program also addresses the more serious issues within our region with the Young Leaders tackling social issues including homelessness, drug and alcohol abuse.“ The young leaders will start the year with a leadership and project planning camp in February and in March will work with councillors and senior council staff to develop the Youth Action Plan for the 2015/2016 financial year.

A LAZY Sunday morning took a dramatic turn for Warwick police last week when an unmarked traffic vehicle spotted a stolen car on the Cunningham Highway.

Police say the car failed to stop when directed and sped off after it was seen between Warwick and Karara about 10.15am.

The vehicle and two occupants were located a short time later, having dodged stingers earlier on.

Police say the driver ran away from the vehicle into bushland where he was found by police.

COUNCIL INVITES LOCAL RESIDENTS to have their say about the Stanthorpe Town Centre Masterplan that will further enhance the town’s community focused attractive main street.

Southern Downs Regional Council has engaged the services of designers John Mongard Landscape Architects to prepare a Masterplan for Stanthorpe.

John and his team will hold a series of forums to seek community opinion about the Stanthorpe Streetscape and there will also be an `Ideas Shop Front’ at 13 Maryland Street, known as the ‘old sports shop’ on the corner of Railway and Maryland Streets, for people to drop in, discuss ideas, ask questions and provide feedback,” he said.

“John Mongard has done design work for Stanthorpe previously and looks forward to building on this good foundation. Timely reminder: blackberry NOW IS THE PERFECT TIME to reduce the spread of the blackberry weed that causes substantial damage to the environment and agricultural land.

Blackberry invades bushland, can turn productive land into waste land and harbours pests such as foxes and rabbits.

SDRC Pest Management Oicer Craig Magnussen said control of blackberry can seem daunting, particularly where large thickets have become established.

“However, blackberry can be controlled efectively and economically if the correct control strategies are used.

A range of herbicide and mechanical control strategies can be used, even on the biggest infestations. Very importantly control costs can be returned in the irst couple of seasons through increased productivity of the afected land.

“Council hires out QuikSpray units at very reasonable rates to SDRC residents – these powered spray units make a sometimes diicult job much easier,” he said.

Council is writing to landholders (progressively, by locality) in the southern part of SDRC, ahead of property inspections from October to December 2015, giving plenty of time to comply before inspection.

SDRC has partnered with QLD Murray-Darling Committee (QMDC) and Stanthorpe Landcare to ofer inancial assistance to landholders to control blackberry. The scheme is open to landholders in QMDC catchments (i.e. southern part of SDRC) with rebates provided after control work is undertaken.

Coal ban is a heart-warmer

By ALENA HIGGINS COMMUNITY members and lobbyist groups have applauded Southern Downs Regional Council’s hard-nosed stance following its decision to ban coal and CSG exploration on council-owned land last week.

Councillors unanimously voted to prohibit approvals or permits for coal-related mining exploration on council verges, reserves, easements or any other land controlled by the council at its general meeting in Stanthorpe on Wednesday.

The multi-point motion, tabled by councillor Jamie Mackenzie, also strengthened the protection for strategic cropping land and residential areas. The Southern Downs now joins Scenic Rim Regional Council as only the second

council in Queensland to severely restrict mining that it said would adversely impact the area’s tourism, rural lifestyle or agricultural production.

Southern Downs Protection Group president Sarah Moles described the historic decision as “a good start“ but warned residents to remain vigilant. “I think it is very good for council to seek to increase the buffer protection zones around villages and the priority living areas, but there are still mining exploration leases right across the Southern Downs and there are plenty of ways in which those applications can be approved.�

Clean Air Queensland campaign director Michael Kane praised the decision but said more work needs to be done at state level.

He said there were at least nine ex-

ploration leases currently active on the Downs and called on the neighbouring shire of Toowoomba, Western Downs and Goondiwindi to follow suit.

SDRC mayor Peter Blundell said the council felt strongly that priority agricultural areas across the Southern Downs, as well as associated aquifers, should be protected from any form of such developments.

Cr Blundell said while the QLD Plan document recognises buffer zones for urban areas with a population over 1000 people, a number of our communities are left without buffer zones.

Drop off back to the Vineyard Church is expected at 4.30pm.

Established in 2007, the college, which relocated to the Slade Campus at the start of 2013, aims to provide an affordable Christian education to the families of the Southern Downs.

THE Newman regime has taken a massive hit in the election. It demonstrates the volatility of recent elections. No longer can politicians take the public for granted.

You can’t sell off assets and make laws for special groups and expect not to suffer the consequences. It is also time for citizens to start to take notice of the minor parties and Independents, who have a lot of worthwhile ideas which should be considered by the electorate.

Voters should not be voting with their emotions, but take time to learn what the minor parties are offering and make informed decisions. It is time to move away from the two-party systems and the flipping from one main party to the other, which in the long term achieves nothing.

The Queensland results may bode evil for Tony Abbott, and there is much speculation of the leadership challenge against the PM. The public should be aware that to change a leader doesn’t make for a better administration; it is much deeper than that. However, the power-brokers seem to think that a new face at the helm will improve their chances.

I WAS simply appalled to read in the Southern Free Times that our council made the decision, in complete secrecy, to sell off the region’s pensioner units. I work as a handyman in Stanthorpe and have in the past done small jobs at some of these units.

I’ve met most of the frail, elderly and disabled people that inhabit them. And now to think of these people having to move out into the already congested and over-priced general rental market as their home is being sold out from beneath them. You know, I don’t think the word ‘appalled’ even covers it. Yes they probably cost our region a comparatively minimal amount in maintenance and associated council staff wages, but are you or I not willing to pay a small portion of our rates towards helping these people live with some dignity?

In the majority of cases these are our grandparents we are talking about. They have spent 60, 70 or 80-plus years of their lives serving this region, building and growing it into the community we now hold so dear. They deserve our care and respect; not to be thrown out into the street.

Thankyou Cr McKenzie for standing up against this. I’m sure you agree with me when I say what a pity it was that none of our other elected councillors did.

THIS writer is waiting with bated breath for radio broadcaster Alan Jones to be sued for telling the truth! Queensland, as the voter and the lucky owner of a radio that is able to pick up his hour on 4BC as the election approaches, it is impossible to dismiss his truths. So in my studied opinion, I hope that the LNP is returned with a small majority. Never again will a government so overwhelm the opposition that it becomes a dictatorship! The ALP showed similar disdain to victims of their Mental Health Act as now being witnessed by the LNP’s disdain for victims of their mining invasion. They are so cocky that no-one can stop them, that a gentleman from the mining Minister’s office in Brisbane told me on 21 January that landowners were heavily protected against a socalled invasion of their property.

With Alan Jones’ words still ringing in my ears I stated “then Alan Jones hasn’t a feather to fly with” as the gentleman in the Minister’s office slammed down the phone, terminating my call!

That is the truth of the matter. Dictatorship is all power to end disagreements and tolerate no argument! The LNP by a tiny margin with a swag of independents keeping them in line, will hopefully keep miners in their place!

Lindt Cafe inquiry THE flowers have gone and the blood has been cleaned from the hostage site of the Lindt Cafe.

An inquiry will start to try and get to the bottom of this dreadful event. I hope it will leave no stone unturned to find out the truth of what happened and who ultimately was responsible.

There are some questions that need to be answered: will we find out about the money trail from drugs and halal certification to ISIS via various charities? Who were the 14,500 who followed the accused on Facebook and who subscribed to his website? Who financed his appeal to the high courts? Where did the sawn-off shotgun and ammo come from? What mosques did he attend and who gave him support?

These are just a few questions that we should hope will be answered by an inquiry. Or are there those who would rather that the answers to these questions never be known?

I was on her left on the footpath and if I hadn’t stopped she would have knocked me over. She did apologise but that is no excuse for driving while on the phone and not looking out for pedestrians, especially children.

Also, to the person who lives in Ruston Street who pulled a dead shrub out of their garden and threw it on the footpath across from their house as well as their grass clippings.

A meeting to discuss the sell off of these pensioner cottages on Fitzroy Street has failed to provide reassurance for affected tenants.

By ALENA HIGGINS A MEETING to discuss a council proposed sell-off of pensioner housing has failed to provide answers or hope, according to one tenant.

Residents of 54-56 Fitzroy Street, Warwick, met with Southern Downs Regional Council last Thursday to grill mayor Peter Blundell and council staff about its shock decision to wash its hands of community housing.

But questions, such as why affected tenants were not told of the resolution before now, were brushed aside, according to resident Dorothy West.

“A lot of what they said was a lot of hot air - you know, typical politicians,” the pensioner said.

“It’s much of a muchness. I know exactly the same now as I did before, I don’t feel reassured.”

The council resolved in camera at its October 2014 meeting to “divest itself of community housing”, starting with the initial sell-off of 24 units known as the Pioneer Cottages.

But residents were only advised of the decision by letter last month.

Ms West, who has lived at Pioneer Cottages for a little over a year, said she would try to find something else rather than take up the 12-month security of tenancy option.

“I certainly can’t afford to pay out for what the real estate people are asking,” she said when asked what she thought her chances of securing comparable housing was.

Cr Blundell admitted that not everyone was happy at the end of the meeting, which was closed to the media.

“Last week’s meeting between residents and council representatives was designed

to give residents a voice and for them to ask questions,” he said.

“In this regard it was a good meeting.

“While I would not say everyone was happy at the conclusion of the meeting I do believe there is a better understanding of the situation and particularly the ‘where to from here’ question.”

The council became involved in pensioner housing in the 1980s when no other providers existed.

However, it now contends that organisations such as Churches of Christ and St Vincent de Paul Society, whose core business is to provide housing options for low to medium income earners, are able to fill the void.

“Council has committed to keeping residents informed of progress in this matter,“ Cr Blundell said.

By ALENA HIGGINS IF YOU were hoping to avoid a return to the polls for the 2016 quadrennial local government elections, you may be sorely disappointed.

Postal voting for whole areas, which has been the practice of Stanthorpe and Warwick councils since at least 2000, has been effectively abolished for next year’s civic election unless council can show that exceptional circumstances exist.

In a letter to Southern Downs Regional Council dated 22 December, Local Government Minister David Crisafulli stated he was “unlikely to approve an application to conduct the 2016 elections by way of

postal vote for the whole or part of the area” due to transparency concerns.

“It is my personal view that attendance voting strengthens the integrity and transparency of the democratic process and has the additional advantage of delivering social benefits to the community,” the minister wrote.

“Accordingly, I believe local government elections should be conducted by attendance ballots wherever possible.”

But the news has frustrated council, which contends it is a retrograde move.

“Council is against the removal of postal voting in that it provides an easier option for the elderly and aged to access

voting, removes the ridiculous waste of promotional material at polling booths and the opportunity to operate more cheaply,” SDRC mayor Peter Blundell said.

“One of the pros is that if councils run local government elections themselves there is control and accuracy managed successfully at a local level.

“Postal voting also allows a more considered decision for a local government election.”

The mayor said he was confident the blunder of the last local government election was a one-off.

Picture perfect GLORIOUS weather on Friday and Saturday saw thousands of people file through the gates for the 2015 Stanthorpe Show.

As usual, Friday proved the most popular day but crowds also packed the showgrounds on Saturday night to enjoy the demolition derby and fireworks, ringmaster Teena Wilcock said.

“It was fantastic weather, not too hot or too cold and the grounds just looked a picture with all the rain in the lead up to the show," she said.

Trio right on track IT’S something special when brothers make music together and there are plenty of famous sibling groups making it big on the world stage.

The Vellacott Trio are hoping that their blend of music will strike the right chord with audiences when they launch their first EP in Warwick on 6 March.

The brothers, Ben, 18, Clayton, 16 and Morgan, 14, who are well-known for playing community events, charity work, and “parties, weddings, anything”, are excited to be launching an EP of original music to their home crowd.

Front man Ben, who is currently studying a Bachelor of Popular Music at Griffith University on the Gold Coast, is utilising all the learnings of his course in this venture.

“I’ve been writing a lot and we have had help with recording, mixing and mastering the tracks from Alex, of the Flame Fields, who has been a great help in getting this project off the ground,” he said.

“It’s been fantastic to be able to discover what it takes to make it in the music industry and to have the guidance of wellrespected musicians and industry leaders to guide us in our first major music project.”

Ben said that the songs on the new EP are just a small sample of what they’ve written since the band’s inception.

“Some of the songs we’ve had for over a year and some were written a week out from recording,“ he said.

The boys believe the songs have good audience appeal, a catchy hook and great rhythm that will, hopefully, have people singing along.

“My favourite track on the EP is Don’t Break It. “I think it’s got a cool little riff, you can move to it and it’s just heaps of fun to play live.” Ben plays guitar and sings while Clayton drums and harmonises and Morgan provides the funky bass lines.

The boys have music pedigree, having taken their inspiration and talent from dad Phillip, a popular and well-known musician and guitar teacher, who has done his own share of touring, playing major events

and recording work.

There will be a bill of three acts on the night with local favourites Port Paradise kicking off the evening, followed by Gold Coast band The Flame Fields.

The EP launch party will be at the Stockyard Hotel’s outdoor venue on Friday 6 March from 6.30pm, with entry just $5.

CDs and T-shirts will be available for purchase on the night and for those who can’t make it along to the launch, the Vellacott Trio’s EP will be available from iTunes.

Australians may have forgotten, but it was the Federal Police who tipped off the Indonesian authorities about the drug-runners in 2005. This came about when the parents of one of the Bali Nine told the AFP what their son was planning to do, in the hope the AFP would intervene, and stop their son from going on his ill-fated trip to Indonesia. Instead, the AFP, being “good” international co-operative citizens, dobbed them in to the Indonesians who were waiting for them at the airport, on their way back to Australia, with drugs strapped to their bodies.

The AFP could easily have ‘kept mum’ and arrested the drug runners when they landed on Australian soil. This all happened when John Howard was PM. It is odd, that now with a Liberal administration, PM Tony, and all are crying foul when two of the Bali Nine are facing death.

I wonder if anyone is having an attack of the guilts over this sordid affair?

“Real life” after school in my mind would be my initiative and would be supported by our ‘thinking’ government and Education department. It would be funded by our government and in collaboration with schools to teach “real life” skills for youth e.g. renting, sharing, cooking, cleaning, respect, morals, responsibilities, washing, boys and girls’ sexual responsibilities, innovation, invention to think up own business idea, nutrition, health and mental health.

These skills would be a part of “earn or learn” policy and would be beneficial for the future, the community, reduce crime and unplanned babies.

At the same time have the full potential of filling the gap of unemployment in the mature age of 45-65. We would upskill those interested in assisting, mentoring and guiding our future generations to tackle those huge problems we are all facing - innovation and invention is required to be nurtured now.

I am at a loss, as to how to create this position or how to become recognised for its merits and problem-solving. It has an enormous potential throughout the Southern Downs and I have all qualifications to initiate a plan of action and to achieve this.

What’s On Author bares vital legacy Queensland Firebird Verity Simmons will be in Toowoomba on 15 February as part of a event for children with Type 1 Diabetes and their families.

“I asked, ‘can I eat chocolate and can I play netball?’ And they said, ‘yes’,“ she recalled.

“I was cool with that.“ This glass half full philosophy is typical of the man-

ner in which the adopted Queenslander attacks every facet of life.

On Sunday 15 February, the talented netball star will visit Toowoomba to meet with children with Type 1 Diabetes and their families as part of a free event sponsored by One Wish One Cure and the Toowoomba Hospital Foundation.

Lourdes Primary School Hall, 2 Ascot Street, Toowoomba, from 11am to 3pm and will include fun activities, healthy drinks and snacks, netball drills and tips, a barbecue lunch and of course a meet and greet with the Firebird herself.

AN INSPIRATIONAL book reading from author Lynette Gordon-Smith will be held at the Warwick Library on 11 February at 10am.

Principal librarian Samantha Shelbourn said Ms Gordon-Smith, a well known local author and musician, was looking forward to her visit and reading from her first book, The Legacy Left Behind.

“Lynette’s book came after a traumatic event in her life and she took some sound advice about putting pen to paper to deal with her emotions and feelings,” Ms Shelbourn said.

“Lynette began her writing with the idea of a short story but gradually developed into a complete book.

“The main theme is how one family comes to terms with the legacies left by earlier generations.

“The book covers many universal themes and certainly takes the reader on a journey through the celebrations, disappointments, trials and unconditional love of a strong family unit.

“Lynette wrote her book to encourage all women who find themselves in challenging circumstances to take a stand and believe in themselves.

At 63 years old, Lynette believes she is living proof that you are never too old to try new things and to spread your wings.

“Lynette’s life has been an adventure and this is reflected in her writing,” Ms Shelbourn said.

“She decided to settle in Allora after extensive travels to present musical programs that include jazz in Melbourne, military in the Colac City Band and many solo concerts.

“Some people may know Lynette as the ‘Saxy Lady’ as she is an accomplished saxophonist of 50 years’ experience.

Ms Gordon-Smith will read from her book and also sign copies for those purchasing,” Ms Shelbourn said.

ON Saturday night Australian football fans were rewarded for their dedication to the Socceroos when Australia won a thrilling Asian Cup final.

Coach Ange Postecoglou showed, as he did during his time with the Roar, that he is his own man.

Postecoglou has always been the right man in the right place at the right time.

He inherited a pretty dysfunctional team 13 months ago. It was a tired, creaking team corrupted by a sense of entitlement. Under his tutelage the change has been remarkable.

The team has been transformed into a hungry, younger, group of players who understand that no player is “entitled” to his place. Names mean nothing but the jersey means a lot. It’s back to the future in terms of team culture, and the best it seems is yet to come.

There are lessons to be learned for all sporting teams in Postecoglou’s ethos.

For the Socceroos the age of entitlement is over. It is the coach in charge of the troops, not the other way round.

Queensland Heat coach Stuart Law is the latest in a long line of coaches to feel the wrath of a playing group and subsequently get the boot. Word has it there was no heads-up from Queensland Cricket of his impending sacking after he “lost the playing group.”

Law can take solace - he joins some illustrious mates including Trevor Barsby and John Buchanan.

Unfortunately Law was handed a poison chalice of sorts - a mandate from Queensland Cricket to “toughen up” the playing group.

A product of the ’80s and ’90s, Law had little in common with players who don’t know tough, but believe they are entitled. There was not much support for Law in the boardroom when he put the blowtorch on the Heat players.

Postecoglou has shown that with tough love comes success. It is a simple message really.

Don’t blame the coach and his minions, the ref, the conditions, administrators, fans, the scheduling or the bus driver for your shortcomings - take a long hard look in the mirror.

I am hoping we see more of the Postecoglou way creeping into cricket, the NRL and sport in general.

The main event on the program, the Railway Hotel Allora Cup was won in a blanket finish by the Dalby trained and well-travelled Galestrom.

With regular rider Brad Appo in the saddle, the seven-year-old starting at the good odds of $15 pulled out all stops to hold out second placegetter Eureka Dazzler ($13) who was momentarily held up for a run as the field entered the straight. Tailwind ($13) was a neck away third.

Jockey Brad Appo was delighted with his win on the gelding but not as pleased when he copped a painful kick in the knee while unsaddling the winner.

Appo was examined by the ambulance and on their advice was stood down for the remainder of the meeting.

For those punters who may have followed the meeting on the Queensland TAB - the trifecta on the Cup returned a handy $2047.40.

The meeting got off to a sensational start when Armidale visitor Kingston Time who was slowly out of the barriers and the Garry Schwenke trained Cuban dead heated in the 2000-metre opening event.

It proved easier to find the winner of the State Election QTIS Maiden than the actual election itself when favourite Rosco trained by Michael Nolan greeted the judge.

Ridden by Skye Bogenhuber the three-yearold beat Without Force by almost two lengths to claim his maiden win.

Skye Bogenhuber made it a double when she won the next on board the Toowoomba galloper All Troops.

The Shane Iverson trained two-year-old having its first race start went on to win impressively despite carrying the big weight of 58kgs and racing greenly in the early stages.

The Paul Grills stable was back in the winner’s circle in the fourth race, making their trip from Armidale worthwhile.

Luna Lang ridden by apprentice Jodi Worley appreciated the apprentice’s 3.0kg claim and scored a comfortable two-length win over another Garry Schwenke galloper, Never Ignore.

The final two events went the way of visiting gallopers. The Sunshine Coast trained Zeeva started $4.20 favourite in the sixth event and did not disappoint punters despite a tendency to hang throughout the race.

The last race was not without drama. Magic of Love was a late scratching after being kicked by the clerk of the course behind the barriers.

When the race got underway Isn’t He a Beauty saluted for his Toowoomba connections beating Red Warning and Bay Trust wrapping up a very successful meeting to kick start another big year for the Warwick Turf Club.

‘THAT DAM RIDE’ THIS WEEKEND IF you had a taste of bike riding in the recent Stanthorpe Triathlon then chances are you will be one of the large group organisers expect to take to the course this Sunday for “That Dam Ride”.

This year the ride will cater not only for the ex-

perienced cyclist looking for a challenge but for the whole family.

In all there are three courses which will start and finish at Storm King Dam with no worries about transport to or from the start and finish line.

The three categories include the Full Course Single Cyclist; Half Course Single Cyclist and a Beginner’s Course for children and novices.

Please be aware that children under the age of 15 years must be accompanied by an adult at all times and that children under the age of 15 are not eligible to participate in the over 100km ride.

The Stanthorpe Lions Club will operate a barbecue at Storm King Dam for family, friends and spectators.

If you are taking on the full course, registrations open at 5am and the ride commences at 6am.

Registration for the half course opens at 6am with a start time of 7am. Children and novices can register for their ride at 7am and begin at 8am.

Chad Wilson, new to the game and a new member is making great strides in his game. His handicap is sure to plummet after wins in a recent Saturday competition and last Friday in the Royal Chook Run. Wilson finished with 21 points In Friday’s RRR. After a countback he edged out fellow “newbie” Leon Sticklen. Rundown balls went to 19.

Pins (Red Rooster hot chook vouchers) went the way of Mick Banks (11), Dylan Thrift (13), and Adam Byrne (16). Some 46 players (including three Stanthorpe visitors) signed on for Saturday’s Single Stableford.

Former PGA trainee (albeit 15 years ago) Shane McKenzie was one over after the first nine.

McKenzie finished the round with 42 points to claim a win in his first game at his new club.

Results like that will draw the attention of the handicapper when he returns from electoral bliss or mire.

A countback decided the runner-up - Dion Phillips (41). Pipped at the post was Mick Payne who earned a ball in the rundown along with those to a score of 37. Pins went to Mick Payne (5), Bob Lester (7), Mal Galloway (9), Mark Thomas (11), Keith Clarke (13), and Eamon Cockram (16).

Members celebrated the opening of the new golf season on Sunday with a 4BBB event sponsored by Bell’s Butchers and Rob McConnell’s Golf Shop.

Some 22 pairs enjoyed a round in perfect conditions. Gwen and Rick Mills with 46 points were the winners.

COUNTING DOWN TO ICC ACTION THE countdown to the ICC World Cup is on. Michael Clarke had his first hit-out last weekend in a grade match in Sydney scoring a very steady half century. Incumbent Australian captain or not Clarke took his place helping with the covers and other duties expected of West’s players before and after the game. Clarke has returned to the pitch earlier than anticipated in a bid to prove his fitness to selectors by the February 21 deadline they have set.

Following their 112-run victory over the Poms in the tri-series final, Australia heads to the World Cup in pole position according to the recently released team rankings. The Australians are wellplaced although an injury to James Faulkner in the ODI final sent a ripple of unease through the camp.

The pool games commence on 14 February.

There will only be three pool games played at the Gabba during the series.

WIN FOR WALSH BUT HANNAH'S BEST IT WAS a great day at Sporters on Sunday. John Walsh had a good win over Aaron Simmers but it was Hannah Reeves who trumped everyone. In a first for a lady golfer at Sporters Hannah carded the best overall gross. Great game Hannah - congratulations.

The rundowns went to Paul Armstrong and Ian Anderson. The pin shot on the 12th went to Woggy who also claimed the Pro Pin. Marl Lynam was too good at the 17th and took the pin shot on that hole. Phil Zikan and Mick Speer were the lucky meat tray winners.

Local Sport COACHING FOR THE AGES THERE are a raft of football coaching courses currently available for parents and players designed to accommodate those at all levels of the game.

The Grass Roots certificate - Discovery Phase is designed for anyone coaching five to nine-yearolds. It encourages learning the game and developing skills while having fun. How refreshing is that.

The Skill Training Certificate - Skill Acquisition phase targets those coaching the nine to 13-year-old players with the focus on building a solid foundation of technical skill.

Stretching over 14 hours, the course is fully practical and deals with the development of the four core skills that make up 95 per cent of the actions of any outfield player.

The courses are FFA Accredited and enable club coaches to gain sufficient accreditation for the 2015 season. Registration must be completed online via Sporting Pulse.

The Grassroots Stanthorpe course is set down for 20 February. The Skill Training Course will be covered over two days on 21 and 22 February and a date and venue the level four referee course is yet to be announced.

DOWN TO WIRE FOR FLAG THE Annual Flag event at Wallangarra went down to the wire. Steven Hampstead and Taffy Edwards both finished with two shots in the bank.

Hole nine was chosen as the play-off hole with Hampstead clinching victory by less than a foot.

Chris Edwards and Denis McMeniman tied for the Captain’s Stakes. There was only one pin shot to report and that was at nine with Hampstead hitting one close.

The February Monthly Medal rolls around on Saturday. A reminder that Sunday, 15 February is the big one - the Wallangarra Open. There will be more information on the open and tee-off times in Spin next week.

STANTHORPE WILL HOST MITCHELL SHIELD FINAL THE Stanthorpe Mitchell Shield side continued their stunning season securing a home final after defeating Central Districts last Sunday, keeping their unbeaten record this season intact.

In a bold move after winning the toss, Stanthorpe put Central Downs in to bat, backing their strong bowling attack to restrict the visiting team.

Ross Lupton has developed into the lynchpin of this successful side and he struck with only the sixth ball of the innings.

Lupton was among the wickets again in the

Play this weekend will be for the February monthly medal and putting competition. The time sheet is currently on the board and tee-off from 11.30am.

third over as the Central Downs batsmen found his pace too hot to handle and the scoreboard showed 2/12.

Central Downs dug in before Duane Lihou broke through taking the score to 3/54. The bowlers maintained solid pressure but Central Downs were able to move the score to 74 before losing the wicket of their top scorer who was clean bowled by Damian Anderson.

Lyndon McGrath joined the attack and took three wickets in a six over spell. Lupton and Lihou cleaned up the remaining wickets and in a fine bowling display Stanthorpe had restricted Central Downs to 134.

When the Stanthorpe openers came to the wicket Hayden Lanza made his intentions clear from the outset. Lanza opened his shoulders and dispatched the bowling to all points on the ground in an innings that netted him a century.

Batting with Stanthorpe Captain Ben Staley the pair put on an opening partnership of 97.

Lanza was finally dismissed for 102. His innings included 11 boundaries and a pair of sixes. Staley played a patient role as the partnership anchor scoring 18 valuable runs. Stanthorpe cruised to an easy victory with five wickets in hand.

The win puts Stanthorpe at the top of table with four wins and no losses. In a successful rep season Stanthorpe has managed to bowl out each

of their opposing teams in the competition, which augers well for the final later in the month.

Which team Stanthorpe will play in the final on 21 February remains undecided.

Stanthorpe is certainly in the box seat and will start favourite in the final no matter who they play.

After a break for the Australia Day Super Eights and the Stanthorpe Show, regular fixtures return this weekend.

SUCCESS IN DISTRICT FOURS THE 2015 SDMDBA Fours were decided last weekend. Teams from Warwick, Tannymorel, Texas, Goondiwindi and Stanthorpe joined three teams from the Summit Bowls club in two days of very robust competition.

Knockout rounds were held on Saturday at The Summit Club and the greens were running very slick thanks to the hard work of the greenkeeping crew of Ray, Phil, Dale and Eliseo.

Play moved to the Stanthorpe club for the finals on Sunday and in a tough battle, the Summit combination of Rob Capelli, Peter Parker, President Darren Stanley and Eliseo Zamprogno downed the Mick Mills’ Stanthorpe team to claim the Shield After last weekend’s competition bowls at the Summit this Saturday is a trophy day - an opportunity for one team to win a cash trophy. Play will get underway at 1pm.

WIN FOR BOEKHOLT STANTHORPE Golf club hosted a Stableford event last Saturday sponsored by Len Leigh. Darryl Boekholt returned a score of 43 to take out the event, relegating Santo Cavallaro (41) to second place.

The result of the ladies’ event was also a close encounter. After a countback Margie Locke snatched the first spot from Hannah Reeves, after both returned a score of 37 points.

Collecting the ladies pin at 3/12 and then the approach at 17 provided some consolation for the promising youngster.

Keith Allen took the men’s pin at 3/12 and Mark Hendry tasted success at 17. Tom Fittock picked up the birdies nest with a fine performance at the third hole.

WARWICK’s HOPES TAKE A HIT WARWICK’S hopes of a third consecutive Mitchell Shield win took a hit last weekend when they were defeated by Lockyer. Despite some fine performances by the Warwick team on the good batting wicket at Rope Hill, Lockyer got away with the win, putting a finals appearance out of the reach of Warwick.

With first use of the wicket, Warwick scored 222 for the loss of only four wickets from their 50 overs. Brendan Malone top scored with 89 runs.

Lockyer had little difficulty chasing down the total with five overs to spare and still seven wickets in the shed dashing Warwick’s hope of a finals appearance.

There was little joy for the Davis Shield side as they took on Lockyer at Cahill Park. Lockyer were restricted to 190 after some fine bowing from Kris McLennan, who finished the game with a five-wicket haul.

The required runs looked to be a gettable target but Warwick fell well short - all out for 150.

Best batting performances came from Luke Cullen (32) and Carter Bilbrough (29).

Warwick’s Davis Shield chances are still alive.
