A RANGE of economic and job creation opportunities will arise in Geelong this year as the economy continues to grow and diversify, according to Victorian Employers’ Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VECCI).

“This potential is broad-based and will occur across Geelong’s diverse array of goods producing and service industries,” says VECCI chief Mark Stone.

Mr Stone will be working closely with the Geelong business community and key decision makers at local and state government levels to ensure these opportunities are realised.

“The co-location of the National Disability Insurance Authority, the Victorian Workcover Authority and the TAC in Geelong will create a hub for injury and disability insurance and rehabilitation,” Mr Stone says.

“We welcome Deakin University and The Gordon establishing a new centre to train and develop

the workforce of more than 1500 people that will be employed by these organisations.

“This new hub will complement Geelong’s healthcare sector, which is undergoing a major renewal with the Geelong Hospital and St John of God Hospital redevelopments and the establishment of Epworth Geelong.”

These insurance and healthcare developments will provide a range of opportunities for existing and new businesses to supply these organisations with goods and services, including legal and financial.

Mr Stone also believes the region’s abalone industry is ideally placed to continue to capitalise on growing demand from Asia for high-end and ready to eat products.

“Grants, such the Geelong Region Innovation and Investment Fund, support growth and diversification of processing plants and are important for capacity

building local businesses and job creation. This complements the thriving mussel industry that Portarlington is renowned for,” he says.

“We welcome Victorian Labor’s $18m commitment to progress the Portarlington Safe Harbour Project for the infrastructure benefits it will bring to local mussel farmers as they work to capitalise on domestic and international demand.”

VECCI believes Deakin University, Gordon TAFE and the region’s schools will continue to make a significant contribution to Geelong’s workforce and community.

“The strong synergies between these institutions and industry assist in growing the workforce for the future of Geelong,” Mr Stone says.

GEELONG Visions 2015 New Premier’s vision to help ‘proud city’

My plan for Geelong I HAVE a plan for the future of this proud city and this great state.

That plan is already underway because I’m not wasting a single day.

Three months ago, before I had the honour of being elected Victoria’s 48th Premier, I launched Labor’s campaign at Geelong Performing Arts Centre.

At the launch I promised a $320 million TAFE Rescue Fund - an emergency measure to save our stricken TAFE system and help campuses build for the future. Those funds are already flowing.

Three months ago I also stood with two loving parents who lost their son on the soccer pitch when his ambulance took too long to arrive.

I promised an end to the ambulance crisis and an end to the war on our paramedics because they’re what’s right with the ambulance system and we need to fix what’s wrong.

That war was over on day one of the new Labor Government.

In 2015 I look forward to working with paramedics not against them - to fix our ambulance system and help save lives.

I believe every job is worth fighting for. Under the Labor Government, the first piece of legislation in-

troduced into parliament was the Back To Work Bill.

It’s a real plan to help create 100,000 new jobs by supporting retrenched workers and unemployed young people and giving them a second chance.

The jobs crisis in Victoria hurt workers and families in Geelong but things will get better. By investing in our strengths - like advanced manufacturing, education and skills, and pharmaceuticals we can get our state back on track and back to work.

Last week I also met members of my Ice Action Taskforce.

Ice is a hideous drug. Too many families in Geelong have seen their young ones use this substance and turn to a life of crime.

We’re stopping this scourge on the streets and at the source, working with police, experts and local communities to find a solution that’s tough on dealers but fair on families.

In 2015 I’ll work hard with my team to invest in our schools, repair our health system, create more jobs and get our state back on track.

Geelong has a proud past and I know it will have a great future.

The profile of Geelong is at an all time high.

We’ve made it easier to do business in Geelong. I’ve asked for changes and members of staff have delivered.

We’ve made planning easier – we’ve cut through the red tape.

We’ve made the centre of the city a nicer Mayor Darryn Lyons place to be.

We’ve made parking free in the centre of town on weekends.

We’ve attracted grants and created more jobs for Geelong.

But I can’t do it on my own and neither can council or government. We all have to chip in.

I am determined to have central Geelong the best it can be. But we need more if we are going to attract more people, more business, to Geelong.

I need your help in getting Geelong going.

2015 is all about more business, more people, more events and more culture.

I want Geelong’s heart to be pumping!

The company started as a small furniture removalist in 1960 but quickly grew to a well-respected business carrying out commercial and residential relocations and has short and long-term furniture storage available.

yars Packaging was established in 1985.

Before starting the business, Daryl Byars worked for a paper bag manufacturer in Melbourne.

Like many start up operations, when Daryl decided to start his own business, he started it from home in his garage.

Within two weeks, he needed a bigger site.

He found a small warehouse in Dowsett Street, South Geelong, where he continued to grow the business to the point where they were packing orders in the driveway because the warehouse was full to overflowing.

By 1991, Daryl was moving his business again, this time to a site in Fyans Street, in a purpose-built warehouse complex.

As the Geelong region’s specialist packing supplier, Byars Packaging has continued to steadily grow.

Daryl’s two sons joined the business, and as the business in Geelong grew, so too did the demand for packaging of all shapes and sizes.

Looking back on the development of his business, Daryl said just like every other business, Byars has had its ups and downs.

The boom of small businesses throughout Geelong and surrounding regions has seen demand grow just as rapidly.

Today, the majority of Byars’ customers are small business owners, retail business owners, retail businesses, bakeries and takeaway food businesses, and business is booming.

Over the past five years, Daryl said that the Byars has grown dramatically.

The Fyans Street premises holds around 5,000 different types of packaging products - from paper and plastic bags to wrapping papers, gift wrap products such as ribbons, tapes, bubble wraps and industrial packaging.

In the warehouse, there is a product for just about any packaging purpose you can think of.

In the past, businesses in Geelong would have gone to Melbourne or further to order packaging, but with the growth in Byars Packaging, many of those businesses have the convenience and time saving that comes with having their packaging needs supplied locally.

Byars has clients covering the entire Geelong region and neighbouring regions, from Geelong to the Bellarine Peninsula, along the Surf Coast to Apollo Bay, and also Ballarat, Bacchus Marsh, Melton and Werribee.

Through all the ups and downs, and particularly through the large-scale growth years, Daryl said he has been lucky to have dedicated, skilled and long-term staff members.

As well as having two sons working in the business, he said most of his staff have been with Byars around fifteen years.

Gallery expanding GEELONG Gallery is keen for community feedback on the vision for a proposed major redevelopment that will see it become an “unmissable” tourism destination and cultural experience for the region.

For almost 120 years the gallery has been the cornerstone of the community’s rich cultural life and heritage, having established a reputation as one of Australia’s leading public galleries, which attracts

Residents are encouraged to submit feedback by completing a short survey on the City of Greater Geelong website at geelongaustralia.com.au/yoursay or by visiting the gallery in person by 5pm on 4 February. This redevelopment has not yet been endorsed by council or the Geelong Gallery board.

2015 jobs market to need efficiency pros THE 2015 jobs market will be characterised by high demand for skilled professionals able to diagnose time or cost inefficiencies and offer solutions, says Geelong recruiting expert Hays.

According to the March Hays Quarterly Report, people offering effective process or costs solutions will be in high demand for employers seeking to maintain profitability while keeping costs down.

“Employers are hiring and they have positive intentions for the year ahead,” says Hays Geelong regional director Mark De Vink.

“In our conversations with employers, it’s clear that the greatest hotspots of demand will be for people who can help a business work smarter, not harder, by improving existing ways of operating.”

According to the report, skills in demand include management accountants able to rationalise reports, administrators with all-round experience and change managers.

The surge in residential developments in 2014 saw competition for experienced high-rise finishes forepersons reach high levels.

Estimators are also needed to help deliver a cost effective product.

Registered nurses are sought in the healthcare sector. So too are aged care funding instrument (ACFI) specialists as organisations think ahead about funding issues, planning and staff training.

Authority planning Geelong port future PORT PHILLIP Sea Pilots carefully guided ’virtual’ ships into Corio Bay this week as part of high-tech planning to ensure Geelong’s shipping hub remains at the forefront of maritime trade.

The detailed simulation sessions took place at Smartship Australia’s state-of-the-art port design and navigation simulator in Brisbane, allowing pilots to test the shipping channels’ capacity to safely cope with a world trend toward larger ships.

Training partnership paying off COMMUNITY Veracity has earned a best-in-the-region recognition at an annual Corrections Victoria Community Partnership Awards.

In partnership with Corrections Victoria, Community Veracity provides programs for offenders, allowing them to work off fines.

The programs provide nationally recognised training, increasing employability and teaching valuable skills while encouraging personal growth and development.

The programs are carried out in groups or teams, encouraging communication and teamwork, while contributing to increased selfawareness, motivation and purpose for offenders.

There are two types of programs on offer. The recycling program in Geelong, Werribee and Nunawading allows participants to train in Certificate III in Warehousing while recycling items that have previously been sent to land fill.

The Food for All baking program offered in Laverton, Geelong, Colac and Melbourne helps participants to train in Certificate III in Commercial Cookery with the food items produced distributed to local charities and community groups.

Corrections and other community groups�. “We aim for our program to benefit both the participants as well as the local communities.�

Co-director Robert Dejanovic says that being partnered with local regional training organisation AGB Human Resources “means that we can offer participants more than just working off their fines, they are also able to work towards achieving a qualification.�

CV has been operating in the region since 2010, providing on the job training and qualifications to those who face barriers to education and employment opportunities.

The Brisbane trip, organised

by Geelong Harbour Master Dilip Abraham for Victorian Regional Channels Authority (VRCA), paints a picture of potential channel and port infrastructure upgrades needed to meet demands of bigger ships, including the new Panamax ships and Suezmax tankers.

The VRCA is investigating a raft of channel improvements adjacent to Refinery Pier and Lascelles Wharf.

The proposal follows on the heels of its successful $9 million Geelong

dredging program, which finished in December. “The largest vessels coming into port currently berth at Lascelles and Refinery,� Captain Abraham says. “The simulator allows us to trial the movement of even larger ships of the future, testing the limits of the channel network and existing berths as well as a potential new berth at Lascelles Four.�

The bigger ships, up to 300 metres long, are already trading to Aus-

tralia. Proposed dredging will allow them to dock safely in Geelong.

VRCA chief executive Captain Peter McGovern said while safe navigation and improving channel capacity were paramount; the latest project will help hone Geelong port’s competitive edge. “This port, Victoria’s most important bulk port, is a real success story and it’s important we constantly plan ahead to ensure it remains that way,’’ Captain McGovern said.

Geelong’s port is being prepared to meet the demand of bigger ships.

Geelong’s Little Creatures brewery is going from strength to strength with the addition of new products and activities for patrons.

Brewing up a success story FEW ENTERPRISES have captured Geelong’s imagination as effectively – and successfully – as Little Creatures.

The $60 million complex, opened just over a year ago at South Geelong’s former Valley Worsted Mills, has engendered a powerful sense of community with weekend markets, community tours, art engagements and, of course, the best of convivial socialising and entertainment good food, great beverages and music.

A new Geelong brew Furphy’s Refreshing Ale has injected life into the ever-growing craft beer community and the new year will see more new additions with the arrival of the White Rabbit Brewery in Geelong from its previous Healesville site.

“Our first year in Geelong has been amazing. We’ve been so humbled by the way the local community has embraced us and made us feel at home,” says Ash Cranston, Little Creatures’ marketing manager.

“We’re really excited to continue our partnership with the Geelong community and introduce new ways for people to enjoy our brewery.”

Ash says the Little Creatures precinct will launch a drive-in cinema for a limited season later this year.

He says the brewery’s craft market had been hugely successful and will continue on the second Sunday of each month.

Patrons have proven not just a thirsty mob but a ravenous lot

as well and the Little Creatures canteen kitchen has doubled its capacity to meet demand.

Designing the brewery involved considerable alterations to the historic red-brick woollen mill, including removal of a second floor of the brewhouse building and roof removal and replacement during installation of the brewhouse’s tanks.

Little Creatures has churned out more than a million cartons of beer in its first year and created jobs for more than 100 people.

As the east coast headquarters for its parent company, the Lion Group, Little Creatures’ villagestyle brewery – with its sprawling restaurant/dining hall – is similar to its renowned sister complex in Fremantle.

GEELONG Visions 2015 Karingal’s NDIS help WHEN Andrew Jones was looking to find out more about his National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) plan, all it took was an easy call to Karingal.

Andrew enjoys an action-packed life. From volunteering, playing sport and going on social outings to focusing on his education, he is an active member in the Geelong community.

His busy schedule means his mother Wendy Jones is determined for Andrew to get the most out of his NDIS plan and supports.

It made sense for her to call the Geelong region’s leading service provider Karingal, offering prompt and reliable assistance.

A FIVE-YEAR-OLD Geelong West girl has been labelled a â&#x20AC;&#x153;miracle childâ&#x20AC;? after surviving a fall onto concrete from the third storey of a Jakarta building.

Billi Lucas broke her back in the horror fall â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but has made a stunning recovery and is on her way back to Australia in a cast back-brace, lying on a flatbed for the flight home.

The lively youngster was in Indonesia with mother Elana â&#x20AC;&#x2122;Sazâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Col-Lucas and seven-year-old sister Java, visiting long-time friends when she had her accident.

Billiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s father, Brad, was at home in Geelong when he received the call every parent dreads. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was working at the cafĂŠ (Botticelli) and Saz called me and told me that Billi had a fall and to get over there right away,â&#x20AC;? Mr Lucas told the Independent from the Medistra Hospital, where his daughter had staff shaking their heads in disbelief this week.

The flight was probably the longest flight of his life, he said.

Mr Lucas was filled in on the details of the fall on arrival but had another anxious wait with his wife as doctors tried to determine the extent of their daughterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s injuries. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I just had the worst of thoughts while I was flying over there,â&#x20AC;? the cafĂŠ owner said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d fallen three storeys from the balcony onto the concrete. She had her hands out as she fell and landed on her stomach, which seems to have prevented any damage to her head.â&#x20AC;?

Billi fell during a thunderstorm.

The plucky girl somehow managed to get to her feet and painfully made her way to her stunned mother, saying â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve fallenâ&#x20AC;?.

Ms Col-Lucas, a teacher of Indonesian, is a regular visitor to the country after becoming a Rotary exchange student some years ago.

Since then the relationship has blossomed and her Indonesian friends have become like a second family.

That second family proved a godsend, providing unending support and vital local knowledge after Billiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s accident.

Mr Lucas said Jakartaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s horrendous traffic snarls delayed the arrival of an ambulance for too long, so the friends helped drive Billi to the hospital instead. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was pretty amazing â&#x20AC;&#x201C; they say that the traffic just seemed to part for them.â&#x20AC;?

AN INDY reader was left scratching his head over a headline above an editorial elsewhere this week.

From then on it was a case of wait and pray. Ms Col-Lucas remained at her daughter’s bedside as her husband travelled over from Australia.

Billi suffered a break and a fracture in her lower back but appeared to have avoided any head trauma.

On Australia Day she stood up with a cast on her back to take some tentative steps.

“They’re calling her the miracle baby,” Mr Lucas said.

“They couldn’t believe she was out of the wheelchair. I’m not a religious person but I do believe there has been some divine intervention.

“Every time I look at her I just cannot believe the way she has recovered. She’s come on leaps and bounds.

“She’s the same old Billi, except she has a broken back.”

Mr Lucas said the family had taken out travel insurance and had been well looked after since Billi’s accident.

SHADES of the 2010 UCI world titles angst over a Geelong race marketed as a Melbourne event emerged this week as wheels were being oiled for the weekend’s Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race.

It’s not in Melbourne, say the critics, but there’s another hitch too: of the 174km course, only 4km – from Jarosite Rd, Bells Beach, to Forest Rd, Anglesea – is actually on the Great Ocean Road.

We’re reliably assured, however, that Cadel will take part in the event.

Sen Const King said securing homes should be top priority, with home-owners suffering a “mentality down here of not locking doors and windows”.

By NOEL MURPHY COUNCILLOR Stretch Kontelj has attacked colleagues for refusing to discuss Geelong bus route cuts set to hit the elderly, disabled and vulnerable.

Cr Kontelj wanted letters pleading community concerns sent to local MPs and Transport Minister Jacinta Allan.

He accused councillors who rejected his call of enforcing “payback” for his vote against Michelle Heagney as deputy mayor late last year.

“There are only two bases for rejecting this: one, they don’t care about the impact on the elderly, disabled and vulnerable in this community or, two, this is retribution for me not voting for Cr Heagney to be deputy, or both.

“They can wrap it any way they like - this is payback time and a lesson that we’ll have to kowtow to the faction of Cr Heagney and Cr Andy Richards, her political master.”

debate on his motion as a matter of urgent business after councillors first learnt of his plans when they entered the council chamber and found a notice on their desks. The 8:5 vote in favour left Cr Kontelj one short.

along with Jock Irvine, Jan Farrell and Rod Macdonald vote against it.”

Cr Richards said if Cr Kontelj was “serious” about bus services he would have contacted council officers “who deal with transport issues or myself as transport portfolio holder”.

“Given that Stretch only put the motion on the table at 7pm on council meeting night, you’d have to ask is this bloke serious about being a councillor?

I think not.

“Stretch seems somewhat bitter that his Liberal side of politics lost the last state election. I say to Stretch the council chamber is not the place to settle old party political scores.”

Cr Heagney said she voted against the “urgent motion” because council should be more “organised and strategic” about writing to ministers.

“The question at hand wasn’t about buses but whether the item was urgent. To receive it at 7pm with no email during the day or mention at dinner doesn’t allow for best approach.“

She will play the lead female role of Agathe in composer Carl Weber’s dark romance The Marksman.

Mayor takes hack payout

By NOEL MURPHY GEELONG Mayor Darryn Lyons has received a confidential payout from the UK’s Mirror Group of Newspapers over alleged phone hacking of his former Big Pictures paparazzi agency.

The out-of-court settlement comes three weeks before a high-profile civil trial against MGN set to start in the UK, with hundreds of potential claimants reported to be watching.

MGN publishes the Mirror, Sunday Mirror and People mastheads. Reports of “widespread and habitual” voicemail hacking emerged last week in a legal hearing ahead of the trial.

More than 40 journalists are alleged to have used internal company phones to illegally access celebrity voicemails.

Cr Lyons’ settlement is one of several out-of-court MGN payouts, which British media reports suggest have averaged around 50,000 pounds. The former paparazzi king declined to reveal the amount of his settlement with MGN. Cr Lyons was one of the biggest players in the British media for two decades when he headed the former Big Pictures celebrity photo agency. A decade ago BRW’s Young Rich list valued his wealth at $65 million.

At the height of his celebrity photography operations Cr Lyons was negotiating photo sales worth hundreds of thousands of dollars each with some of the world’s biggest mastheads.

He attracted worldwide notoriety over photos of Britain’s Lady Diana as she lay dying in a Paris car crash in 1997.

The MGN settlement is just one phone hacking case to have allegedly involved Cr Lyons. Others include Rupert Murdoch’s News International and high-profile police operations Weeting and Pinetree.

Cr Lyons told the Independent in July he had been a victim of the UK’s News Corp phone-hacking scandal.

Cr Lyons said he was still pursuing hacking claims against News.

Tiwi magic mesmerises footy star Josh up north

FOLKLORE has long had it that Tiwi Islanders possess a remarkable innate talent for Aussie rules football.

But Highton’s Josh Finch, who has plenty of footballing talent himself, couldn’t believe just how much until he saw it first-hand.

He was preparing for an AFLNT outing with the Tiwi Bombers, who he plays with every other week in the southern off-season, when he thought he’d tried the Tiwi basketball shoot-out, in which the aim is to kick a football through a basketball hoop.

He and mate John Meesen took 100 shots each. Finch goaled twice, Meesen zip.

Then a young islander wandered in, picked up a football and lobbed it in from half-court on his first kick – and did so again on his second. The third went errant, rimming the hoop but bouncing out.

“Another time I saw a bloke walking along the road barefoot in 35-degree heat bouncing a 1.25-litre Coke bottle back to himself just like a football,” Mr Finch said.

“If they can’t find a footy they’ll use a Coke bottle – they just live and breathe football.”

Finch, a triple best-and-fairest-winner with both his Modewarre team and Bellarine Football League, was lured to Darwin

by Meesen, a former Melbourne Football Club player, to mentor the islanders.

“It’s probably the best experience I’ve ever had,“ Finch said.

“I’m playing with them and helping them develop a more professional outlook to the game. I’m not doing clinics yet but I’m helping them in preparing for games and in recovery.

“We’re currently sitting fifth on percentage and playing the fourth-placed

Wanderers this weekend and hoping for a crack at the grand final.”

Summer football in the Northern Territory was no easy ask for a Victorian and 30C to 35C days with 90 per cent humidity made breathing difficult, Finch said.

Southerners were treated a little like rock stars but not always afforded immediate trust on the field, having to prove their worth first, he said.

Finch has been working alongside coach Willie Rioli, former Cat Ronnie Burns and ex-Demon Austin Wonnaeamirri.

He said the islanders’ marking and kicking talents were exceptional and some passages of play extremely fast and accurate.

WHEN that certain time arrives to buy gorgeous new sets of linen or pillows, you can nose in and around a variety of places of course.

But when choosing linens, that time just cannot be rushed.

Let’s face it, you’ll keep it for years, plus you’ll have to look at it every day if it’s laid within your own home.

I found a store neatly tucked within a cluster of shops at the beginning of Weller St, Geelong West, called In 2 Linen.

It stocks a huge selection of classic home linens as well as modern and some funky-looking textured and patterned cushions.

I found the coolest throws in a variety of summery and wintery colour for only $29.95 each – they generally retail for $69.95.

It just feels so good to know you haven’t paid the full whack all the time!

While mooching around in the shop, I spotted some stylish, stripy beach towels that were lovely and soft, too, and priced at $24.95.

Regular 100-per-cent-cotton towels were just $5 each. Wow! This particular brand generally retails for around $60, so at that price you could quite happily grab a couple.

Aside from the gorgeous pillows, quilts and bed covers, my eyes were naturally drawn to a colourful array of cushions displayed within neat pigeon holes across most of the entire back wall.

I immediately began picking my favourites, matching them with bed covers and thinking about my sofas at home.

The 17-year-old will compete in the questâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s state finals next month, with hopes of again reaching the national finals in Queensland later this year.

Eleni was â&#x20AC;&#x153;pretty shockedâ&#x20AC;? to reach the finals last year. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I did it more for the experience than the competition,â&#x20AC;? she said.

PROTECTED plants and animals rule out Avalon for a new regional motocross track, according to a council report.

Councillors voted this week to spend $50,000 on finding a new site before Barraboolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s McAdam Park track closes at the end of the year.

But the report to Geelongâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s council this week said investigating habitat on the proposed Avalon site off Dandos Rd would take too much time and money.

The search for a new site should now include â&#x20AC;&#x153;surrounding municipalitiesâ&#x20AC;?, the report said.

Riders must leave McAdam Park, in Surf Coast Shire, by December after nearby residents won a long legal and planning battle to close the track.

The previous Labor state government, Motorcycling Australia and Surf Coast Shire paid over $1.5 million to buy the Barrabool site after Geelong Motocross Club lost its Breakwater home following complaints from residents.

Geelongâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s council held on to funding it put aside at the time for a potential Avalon track and now has $660,000 available for a new facility.

Watercraft advice the IRONMAN 70.3 Geelong and 5i50 triathlon swims take place between the Eastern Beach Promenade and the Royal Geelong Yacht Club. Boat owners are advised to navigate in Corio Bay with caution between 7.00am and 10.00am on Sunday 8 February.

Eastern Park vehicle access to the Geelong Conference Centre, Geelong Botanic Gardens and the East Geelong Golf Course is not available between 6.00am and 1.00pm.

Limeburners Boat Ramp will be closed between 6.00am and 3.00pm. The St Helen’s Boat Ramp in North Geelong will operate as per normal.

Zoe, who joined the School on a music scholarship in Year 7, achieved a maximum Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) score of 99.95 in 2014 and is planning to study a Bachelor of Biomedicine at Melbourne University. “From the day I got ofered the scholarship, it changed my life,” Zoe said. “I’m not a very outgoing person and I really appreciated living in a community where everyone wants to contribute and participate.” A talented violinist, Zoe won the solo category of the School’s House Music competition and was a member of the School’s Symphony Orchestra. She also represented the Associated Public Schools (APS) of Victoria in Badminton.

“The School ofers an incredible variety of activities and there is always a lot do.

You realise how everyone has diferent strengths and personalities, which is what makes it such a diverse and amazing community.”

Almost 25% of Geelong Grammar School’s secondary students (Years 7-12) receive some level of inancial support through scholarships and other awards.

The School ofers a very broad variety of scholarships; ranging from academic, musical and sporting scholarships to general excellence scholarships for students whom the School believes will make a positive contribution to the community through their all-round talents. “Throughout my time as Principal I have constantly sought to increase the number of scholarships that the School awards, especially to those students who would not be able to attend the School without some inancial assistance,” Principal, Stephen Meek, explained. “At one level, I have seen this as part of the School’s mission; to help students who would beneit from the School and who would contribute to it, but who would not be able to seize these opportunities without a scholarship. These awards

beneit the individual student, but their presence enriches the whole school.

Scholarships are a vital ingredient in the lifeblood of the School.”

One student who seized his opportunity was Sam Parsons. From a small farm near Wangaratta in north-east Victoria, Sam joined the School on an academic scholarship in Year 7. Like Zoe, Sam also achieved a maximum ATAR score of 99.95 and has been ofered a general merit scholarship to attend Princeton University, an Ivy League research university in the United States which has produced 17 Nobel Prize winners.

Sam and Zoe were two of 11 Geelong Grammar School students who achieved an ATAR score of 99 or better (top 1%), which is outstanding for a nonselective school dedicated to providing an all-round education. Among the high achievers were Jess Grills from Barwon Heads and Mariah Kennedy from Ceres, who both achieved a near perfect

ATAR score of 99.85. In addition to their academic achievements, both girls made signiicant contributions to the other aspects of school life. Jess was a School Prefect, won the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award and was a member of the School Choir. Mariah was a House Captain and a former UNICEF Young Ambassador who won the Young People’s Human Rights Medal in 2013 for her book Reaching Out: Messages of Hope. Mariah said that studying the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma at Geelong Grammar School had helped her grow as a person. “It’s quite expansive of your world view and it challenges yourself but in a way that allows for growth in a lot of areas,” she explained.

MALL BASHING victim Richard Vecoli fears he has sustained permanent damage to his sight following medical checks.

The Independent reported last week how a thug had kicked the Bell Park 19-year-old’s face in an allegedly unprovoked attack, causing facial fractures and retina damage.

“I have been given the bad news that I have lost 50 per cent of my vision in my right eye,” Mr Vecoli posted to social media this week.

“It is highly likely that it will stay like this for the rest of my life due to a crack in my retina (that) doesn’t usually heal.

RICHARD Vecoli could hardly have been less prepared for the cowardly boot to the face that fractured his eye socket in two places, tore his lip, smashed up his cheek and ripped the retina in his right eye.

He was sitting with a mate on the Moorabool St footpath, leaning against a 7-Eleven wall head down, texting another friend in the early hours of last Saturday morning when the attack came out of nowhere.

A stocky, fair-headed thug ran at Mr Vecoli and kicked him square in the face with all the full force of his combined weight and speed - without any prior conversation, provocation or warning.

The lean 19-year-old tennis champion and Australian Open ball boy, soon to begin commerce studies at Deakin University, was badly hurt and shocked.

“I’m still in shock,” Mr Vecoli told the Independent this week.

The assault was one of two high-profile such attacks in the mall, the other in broad daylight drawing the attention of Police Minister Wade Noonan and Deputy Commissioner Lucinda Nolan before undertakings for more police patrols through the city.

A 19-year-old man presented himself to police on Tuesday in relation to the incident involving Mr Vecoli.

Police charged the man with recklessly causing serious injury and other assault offences.

Bus fears spreading IT WAS interesting to read in last week’s Independent about the effect proposed bus route changes would have on Newtown residents.

Users of the number-55 Newcomb bus will also be at a disadvantage if the proposed changes are implemented.

I managed to give feedback to Public Transport Victoria before the 20 December deadline, explaining that I am in my late 70s, have heart failure and arthritis and use a mobility walker.

Part of the reply I received was as follows: “While some people may need to walk further to reach a bus service, the benefits to the community will far outweigh the extra walking distance required.

“It is also expected that you must have a reasonable level of mobility to use public transport, and as such must be able to walk up to 400-600 metres or a five to 10-minute walk to reach a public transport stop”.

I am not the only elderly person who will be affected by the proposed changes in the Newcomb area and have also started a petition against the changes, which will be presented to parliament by Christine Couzens.

The real ‘scumbags’ IT IS disingenuous for Geelong’s mayor to call the people who populate the city mall, and who have every right to be there, derogatory names like “scumbags”.

Geelong’s council, police and State Government have been aware of the problem for many years but have simply reneged on their obligation to ensure peace and order, obviously preferring to save a precious buck.

If the “scumbags” can’t behave and the authorities cannot, or will not, implement initiatives to alleviate the problem, who is really the scumbag?

Council, as owner of the mall, has a responsibility for public order and safety, as does the Government, under whose auspices the police operate.

It is a little late, though welcome, to be calling for police to patrol the mall when that should have happened a long time ago when the problem was glaringly obvious.

The centralisation of bus stops made the mall area a focus for young people’s social activity, also attracting the associated problems.

fines motorists for illegally parking in the area and had a big hand in the redesign of the bus stops, with the attendant focussing of youth activity.

Council has a legal obligation to public order and safety and full knowledge of the problems attendant to its creation of the mall.

Council should not be surprised if it is on the end of some legal action some day for its failure to address problems of its own making.

Belmont traders ignored BELMONT traders are getting sick of Geelong’s council ignoring our suburb.

The attention on the city area only is disturbing most traders. Sure, the city’s got problems but who caused them?

Who let Westfield Geelong blow up like an oversized fat pig? What the hell did the council think was going to happen?

The council is killing small Geelong-owned-andoperated businesses but when holes appear all over the city the council uses everyone’s money trying to undo the damage.

Everyone’s suffering but we at Belmont have been ignored.

Look at the Christmas decorations: the city got a $300,000 tree and spent up on decorations but Belmont got one small star and two trees with lights even though no one is in Belmont at night.

One year we Belmont traders purchased our own street decorations but the following year they were put up in another area.

Many businesses have closed at Belmont in the last year. We demand that council put equal effort into our area and stop allowing and helping big business close local businesses.

The constant expansion of retail outlets for extra rate money is short-sighted.

When local schools, hospitals, charities and sport clubs look for help, the big businesses say, ‘Sorry, only head office deals with these matters’, but small businesses have bent over backward helping, even when the very people asking won’t or don’t support them. Now we can’t afford to help.

We are Geelong also, so council should start helping everyone, not just the city.

By JENA MARINO A NEW live-music venue in Geelong will provide a mentoring program to develop local musicians, according to one of its owners.

John O’Brien said The Workers Club Geelong would be a place for “music lovers” to congregate, connect and share their interest.

“We’re dedicated to live and original music – that’s our passion,” O’Brien said.

The venue would open in late March to showcase national and international acts while also hosting the mentoring program.

O’Brien said the program would cover everything from set-

ting up equipment to organising posters and tickets for shows.

He hoped it would help local musicians follow in the footsteps of Australian bands that started out at The Workers Club Melbourne, such as Tame Impala and The Temper Trap.

O’Brien said the Geelong club could also adopt other “different initiatives”, such as a Seventh Gallery window at the Melbourne sister venue for displaying the works of local artists.

“We’re about the community in Melbourne and we want to do the same in Geelong.”

He praised City Hall for supporting the Geelong venue.

The people in i general have been really positive and hope that it brings light back to Geelong.” i The workes club would join forces with Geelong entertainment booking and promotions service Spinning Half to help local artists arrange gigs and educate them about putting on their i own event as part of the mentoring program.

Spinning Half’s Steve Nichols said the objective of the partnership was “to make every gig an event”.

“We don’t want to just take a booking and see how it goes.”

The Geelong Workers Club will occupy a building in Lt Malop St, near The Eureka hotel.

Cinema to star at Norlane reserve NORLANE’S newly upgraded Evans Reserve will host a night under the stars for local families.

Corio Bay Cricket and Sports Club will host an outdoor Norlane Community Moonlit Cinema on the reserve, with gold-coin entry proceeds going to the children’s ward at Geelong’s public hospital.

The club will use barbecue, raffle and canteen proceeds from the cinema to buy new equipment for its teams.

The moonlit cinema will screen How To Train Your

Dragon 2 from 6.30pm on 6 February at the reserve on Sparks Rd, Norlane. Club president Jason Stolk said the event would also give families a chance to “learn more about what the sports club offers”.

Recent improvements at Evans Reserve included the addition of soccer pitches as part of a master plan to transform the venue into a community hub.

About 120 patrons rugged up to attend last year’s moonlight cinema, which North Shore Recreation Club hosted, raising $500.

TWO LOCAL dancers and friends have given Geelong’s dance scene a fresh feel with the opening of Geelong’s only all hip hop dance school, BC Beatz.

Cat Yee and Megan Blyszak opened BC Beatz in 2013 after having taught in Geelong and the surrounding region for the past 10 years.

BC Beatz has experienced overwhelming success since opening, with classes ranging from casual, fun and relaxed to its specialty - competitive hip hop crews.

BC Beatz primary, secondary and senior crews contested state and national competitions in 2013 and 2014, claiming a number of medals and titles.

IndySport Sniff for Cats as Tigers Kings of The Rip preparing to go North - and elsewhere

KINGFISH fever has set in, with anglers travelling far and wide to find the prized sportfish.

The Rip is threatening to take the title of Bourke St from St Leonards’ whiting grounds, with anglers flocking to the area for some exceptional fishing.

Jigging with 180g to 230g knife jigs has led to anglers boating kings to 12kg, with others sometime catching them by casting at small schools breaking the surface.

Good numbers of fish have also been found slightly closer in at The Bend just out from the Point Lonsdale bight.

Kingfish aside, Queenscliff has also hosted some fantastic-sized whiting. Fishing the run-out tide on the grass beds with tenderised squid caught fish to 40cm.

Australian salmon were busting up in great numbers nearby at the start of the Symonds Channel and, although they don’t pull quite as hard as a kingfish, they still make for good sport.

Swan Bay’s channel produced mixed bags. I spent a few hours casting soft plastics in the channel on the top of the high tide, encountering snapper to 45cm in large numbers, pike to 80cm and salmon to 800g.

Other anglers fishing the channel into the night caught gummy shark with baits such as sauries or squid.

Further round at Portarlington, the mussel beds provide anglers with good bags of whiting and flathead, while the pier produced the odd snapper at night.

Snapper to 6kg were taken from the Pt Richards channel on fresh baits. Tide changes coinciding with dawn or dusk fished best.

The Surf Coast offered spectacular fishing when the conditions were right.

John Mole and Brian Long ventured down past Lorne for salmon and caught a few good-size specimens on 28g Asari Mahi lures. However, a small school of kingfish showed up and the pair landed seven to 75cm in length, which was quite a feat land-based.

They replicated their success the next day, noting the kings preferred 25g to 30g lures intended for the salmon.

Kevin Bardsley trolled the eastern entrance of Phillip Island with a Rapala Xrap 30, catching a 1.3m, 10kg kingfish that gave him a run for his money. Kevin was stoked to finally catch a kingfish in Victorian waters.

Brent Grgic, Aleks Polijak and Bob set out from Port Fairy and headed over to Lady Julia Percy Island where they encountered intense action on kingfish to 6kg in a surface feeding frenzy. Casting stick baits into the commotion, they caught six fish over 75cm.

Wurdee Boluc Reservoir continued producing redfin to 40cm. Bradley Cox spent a few hours casting soft plastics from the rockwall to land a reddie of 38cm.

Lake Bullen Merri was again productive for anglers who caught Chinook salmon to 2.5kg on both lures deep and lightly weighted pilchard fillets.

Josh Trew travelled to Blowering Dam where he managed a mega-sized Murray cod of over 1m.

Options for next week include kingfish in either The Rip, offshore from Barwon Heads or spinning the rocks around Lorne. Anglers should make the most of this species while they are around.

And don’t forget about the snapper as Clifton Springs and Portarlington are still holding great numbers of fish, while freshwater anglers should try Lake Purrumbete, where the Chinook salmon have reached 1kg and respond to the same tactics used at Lake Bullen Merri.

GEELONG Cricket Club will begin day two of its match against Ringwood tomorrow with a small sniff of victory in the air after a late fight-back last week.

Batting first, the Cats were in awful trouble at 9/77, but bowlers Dom McGlinchey (37) and Jeremy Hart (9) showed fight to put on 46 for the last wicket, and help the side to a slightly better score of 123.

In reply, Ringwood started cautiously but a few late wickets saw it finish day one on 5/98 and, although it would still feel comfortable of knocking off the target, Geelong will give its all to claim a rare win.

In Geelong Cricket Association, Grovedale sits sixth on a tight ladder and will have its destiny in its own hands when its hosts North Geelong this round.

The Tigers were staring down the barrel last game when Bell Post Hill cruised to 0/71, but from there they dominated the match.

Barry Tsitas (5/74) lifted to restrict the Panthers to 212 all out.

In reply Grovedale cruised to victory on the back of 87 to Nick Hyden, with support from Conrad Louth (59).

North Geelong will provide a tougher contest but, with an experienced side, there’s no reason the Tigers can’t win this one.

Against Torquay, the bowlers set things up,

keeping the Tigers to just 144, but when they fell to 9/144 in reply, shudders would have gone through the camp.

But they got the job done, and sent a warning to the competition that they can still beat the best.

With only three games left, the division three season looks like going down to the wire.

DRYSDALE’S under-16 Bellarine Storm girls basketball club has proven itself a giant-killer, taking out Melbourne’s prestigious Eltham-Dandenong tournament at the weekend.

Under the leadership of coach Brendan Matthews, the Storm girls accounted for Knox by just

two points. The 24:22 final margin was accumulated in a white-knuckle shootout after the Storm had earlier despatched last season’s VC1 premier, Altona, as well as powerhouses Hawthorn, Dandenong and Eltham.

“We’ve got the monkey off our back,” Matthews said after the win.

The victory was the Bellarine team’s first over Knox in seven encounters.

The Storm juniors surged from obscurity two years ago in the under 14s, climbing from third division to VC1 runner-up in one season.

The weekend’s showing featured powerful performances from Eve Braslis, Raini Matthews, Olivia Vert and Agnes Nnopu.
