Scouted out By BEN CAMERON OVER 10 years ago, long-time Pakenham community servant Darren Spargo made the decision to re-start the Scouting movement in Nar Nar Goon after a decade in the wilderness. Today, he’s the reigning Cardinia Shire Citizen of the Year - a family man who devotes 110 per cent if a job’s worth doing. While the job will never be over, the District Commissioner of Cardinia is proud to report since 2006, Scouting numbers have more than doubled in the area. His three children have also been part of what he calls “the movement”, even though his eldest daughter Elise swore she never would. “We have 100 Scout leaders at Cardinia, around 98 supporters and 500 actual youth members,” he said. “But you don’t need a uniform to assist the movement.” While it came at the expense of his involvement with Rotary, Mr Spargo’s dedication to the Scouts extends back 40 years to when he first attended a Cub Scout meeting. It was there he made the pledge to “never give into myself”. Curiously, Mr Spargo was sitting next to last year’s Citizen of the Year Matt McDonald at the Cardinia Cultural Centre when his name was called out at Pakenham’s official Australia Day ceremony. The Pakenham businessman, who has run a photography shop on Main Street for nearly 21 years, also pipped his wife and fellow nominee Jennie to the gong. Mr Spargo said the Australia Day awards had strong ties to Scouting in recent years. “Senior Citizen of the Year Graeme Legge is the district executive chairperson for Cardinia Scouts,” he said. “Young Citizen of the Year Holly Latter is also a Scout. “In fact, the past three young citizen winners have been involved with the Scouts.

“It’s not because they are Scouts, it’s because of what they learn and develop. “Scouting is the future of our community.” Born in Warragul, Mr Spargo remembers fondly the young people he’s helped guide over the years. One in particular looked him up in the late ’80s to thank him. “He said, ‘Do you remember me?’

Tigerish as a Tiger By ANEEKA SIMONIS HUNDREDS of eager fans turned out to watch the Tigers train at Toomuc Recreation Reserve last week. Richmond Football Club stamped the oval for their third consecutive year training in the Cardinia Shire which drew a lot of fans, particularly kids who were raring to take part in the player-led clinic. Club CEO Brendon Gale said the players loved training in Cardinia - a place he described as being ‘Tiger heartland’. “Being around kids and fans always gives players a lift and reminds them what it’s all about,” he said. “It’s Tiger heartland here for us ... a lot of fans live here so it’s great to make ourselves accessible to them as it can get hard to get into town.” Cockatoo siblings Bohde and Tahlee (pictured right) were two of many kids who had their faces painted in yellow and black in support of the players, while around 400 kids took to the field after the inaugural training to refine their skills with the best in the business.

Angels set to walk among us in relay

Model’s jetset life By GEORGIA WESTGARTH PAKENHAM model and dancer Anna Magrath has just finished more than 100 shows as part of the ‘Spiegelicious and Animalicious’ production in Sorrento and is now off to perform in Miami and the Bahamas. Ms Magrath was offered a full scholarship at Jason Coleman’s Ministry of Dance in 2011 where she studied dance and performance. The dancing dynamo has since added some career highlights to her resume, performing in Guy Sebastian’s hit single Linger, which features Lupe Fiasco as well as performing in Opera Australia’s The King and I. The rising star is now on cloud nine, flying from Melbourne to Sydney and then a long 17 hours to arrive in Dallas USA, where she will start a six-month contract performing a Vegas stage production. On her Facebook page, Ms Magrath said she was very excited to start her next adventure.

A BAND of ambulance paramedics from Pakenham, Beaconsfield, Berwick and Narre Warren branches will join forces for Relay For Life next month ... with a little bit of help from the Richmond Football Club. Held at Berwick’s Akoonah Park on 13 and 14 March, the AV (Ambulance Victoria) Angels will tackle the 24-hour walk looking to better their efforts of last year. The team raised about $6000 last year, and are off to a good start in 2015 so far with Richmond players signing a Dreamtime guernsey for the Angels to raffle off. The Tigers presented Mr Kervin with the jumper during their training session in Pakenham last Friday. He said cancer had touched most of the Angels. “Unfortunately, there are very few people who could say that they have not had cancer touch their lives at some point, whether it be themselves, a family member, a friend or colleague,” he said. “As ambulance paramedics we see first-hand the impact that cancer can have on families, as we are often called for assistance into their homes. “Having personally been in the health care profession for greater than 20 years, I have seen amazing advances in cancer treatments that research has provided.” He said the Angels had been busy fund-raising through sausage

Killer iron OBITUARY Bill Crawford Born: 1 September 1954 Died: 23 January 2015 SPREADING the message about a disease which greatly affected his life was Bill Crawford’s last wish. A week before he passed away, he talked to the News about his desire to get the word out about haemochromatosis and the great loves in his life - family, cricket, football and a couple of his favourite vices. William Francis Crawford, Bill to everyone he knew, passed away on Friday after battling liver cancer, triggered by an underlying disease he didn’t know he had until he was well into his fifties. After a pair of strokes 10 years ago, the doctor’s diagnosis was hereditary haemochromatosis - or iron overload - which as the nickname suggests is a condition where the body accumulates too much iron. The excess iron finds its way into muscles and organs, and for Bill it caused the most havoc in his liver where it eventually created cancerous tumours. “We want people to know about this haemochromatosis as the disease is out there - people should be checked for it for a start,” Crawford said. “Find out what has to be done about it and not wait until you’re fifty. “It’s hereditary and they’ve got to tell their family - let your family know to be checked.” Bill’s wife Dianne implored anyone with a European background - the primary ethnic group affected by it - to get checked as it can be looked for routine blood test and if found early enough haemochromatosis is treatable
and manageable. “We want people to be aware check out the warnings,” Di said. “Ask them for a haemochromatosis test - what’s the problem, it’s just a blood test.” He was always surrounded by loved ones - Dianne, his wife of 36 years, his mother Fay, brother Shane, his three sons, three grandchildren and everyone who seemingly ever bumped into the loveable character. The robust right-arm paceman, who played for a long list of Dandenong area cricket clubs including Parkfield, Lyndale, Parkmore and Dandenong West, loved the sport so much that he even played on his wedding day. By mistake that is, as a rain-delay forced the 1978 grand final to be postponed. It left Bill and Dianne to get married in Tooradin at 11am and drive at a rapid pace down the freeway to Wonthaggi - changing into the whites in the car - to help win the final. But it’s not his individual sporting successes that mean the most to him Crawford was always keen to see the team come first. He also loved his football and the champion full forward was affiliated either as player or coach with Doveton JFC, Dandenong West juniors, Wonthaggi, Hampton Park, Oakleigh Thirds and Dandenong thirds. As his cancer took a greater hold in September, Crawford was thrilled to prolong his innings and make it to one last Christmas with his family and said he’ll miss those family moments most of all. “Out of everything - I’ll miss Dianne most,” he said. “You’ll miss everything though you think of things that you’re going to miss and everything relates to everything.
Bill Crawford was a devoted sportsman. 133020 “I watch the races during the day, little brother Shane, my grandkids getting married - it’s very hard to put one on top of the other, I’ll miss my mother, Dianne, Kristy (daughter-in-law) and now Mel’s in the family.” He wrote his grandchildren a letter to properly say goodbye, and was grateful to tell them early enough about his disease, so they could also say goodbye to their Pop. Always cheerful, even to the very end, Crawford was a perennial fixture

He was always at the cricket watching his son Ryan charge in for Berwick - sitting with his transistor radio, form guide and a cooler with a few cigarettes, soaking up the sun and just enjoying everything about being there. 9.30pm armed with a knife. The man then stabbed a security guard in the tavern’s foyer, before another patron rushed out to help the guard. After a scuffle the offender fell to the ground where he hit
his head and was rushed to hospital with suspected bleeding on the brain. The offender was released from hospital the next day and charged with several offences. He is set to appear at the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court.

THE dream of a zero road toll continues to drive Leading Senior Constable Glen Ziino after 20 years of patrolling Victorian roads. “I didn’t used to think that it was achievable, but when you ask people what’s an acceptable road toll for their family, they say ‘zero’,” he said. “So what’s an acceptable goal for society or what should we aim for? The answer has to be zero. “I think we can get close.” The Berwick 44-year-old joined the police force in 1991. “A long time ago I dropped out of university and just fell into the police force,” he said. “I just applied not really knowing what I was getting myself in for. “The next thing they phone you up and say ‘you’re starting at the academy on the 19th of November’ and you go ‘oh, OK’.” Leading Sen Const Ziino said he quickly knew the highway patrol was his goal. “I always had an interest in

Sad stigma SUCH is the impact of suicide on the whole of our society that even “vandals“ seem to get in on it (Message Out, News, 22 January). It’s sad but so true and painful that so many people choose this path, from school kids to returned soldiers and everything in between. There’s been a lot of progress made in the field of mental health in the last few years, with many politicians and other high profile people coming out and supporting this worthy cause. But, unfortunately, some barriers still exist. Bullying or ridiculing, lack of awareness or acceptance, not speaking out for fear of losing one’s job are still issues that need to be addressed. Re: Teresa’s moving tale THIS is indeed such a moving story which almost left me in tears. Even though I did not encounter a similar story but I do have family members whom I adore so much and treasure. Hence, I could somehow feel the fear, grief, and pain that Teresa had unwillingly gone through. I have lived happily on this street and in this neighbourhood for almost as long as it has existed and never found it to be “a lawless land” or a street which has “lived up to its name..” as implied by the article. If you would take the time to have a drive down Lawless Drive, I’m sure you would find it to be considerably different to the glib, insensitive and irresponsible picture you have allowed your newspaper to print. Macca makes it home By LACHLAN MOORHEAD A BERWICK dog lover’s pet labrador that was given an hour to live after being bitten by a poisonous snake while camping in the Grampians has survived the horrific ordeal. Ally Mackenzie was camping with her family and their pet dogs 10 kilometres into the Grampians National Park, near the Rockwall Dam, on 27 December when her black labrador, Macca, returned from an afternoon swim in the river and started convulsing. A frantic call to the closest veterinary clinic, in Hamilton, revealed Ally’s worst fear - Macca, 7, had been bitten by a venomous snake. “Macca came up around the gazebo that we were setting up and started convulsing, he really started to heave,” Ally said. “It was all just green and yellow bile, very slimy. “Within a couple of minutes he just collapsed, and we’d managed to call the Hamilton vet and they said it sounded like a snake bite. “You have an hour to get him here.” Within minutes Ally and her nephew, Shane, piled into his four-wheel drive and high-tailed it to Hamilton. As Shane sped through the rocky terrain with the clock ticking down, Ally nursed Macca in the back seat, a wet towel wrapped around his ailing frame. “I was just holding him, trying to keep him awake because the vet said not to let him go into a sleep because it’s like a coma,” she said. “Shane did a remarkable job getting out of the Grampians, then we got out into the open road and we still had 56ks to get to Hamilton.” It took Ally and Shane 40 minutes from when they left the camp site to drive to Hamilton, where the vet staff met them and Macca in the car park.
Taking it off the street in Berwick POLICE have seized a large amount of cannabis with a combined street value of $1 million from properties in Berwick and Cranbourne North. Police raided both houses this month as part of an ongoing investigation, but it’s not believed the two are linked. A 44-year-old man was arrested after police raided the property in Baddeley Circuit, in Cranbourne North, on Thursday 8 January. A 20-year-old man was also arrested on Thursday 22 January after police raided a second property in Venables Court in Berwick. Detective Senior-Constable Andrew Pybus said it was good to get the cannabis “off the streets”. I’m not even going to worry about that ‘cause my dog’s gonna make it.” Macca’s neck was shaved in order to take a blood sample. The results took 10 minutes to come back and confirmed that the dog had been bitten by either a brown or tiger snake - for which the anti-venom is the same.
“I said just put it in because his heart was going,” Ally said. Macca was injected with 120mls of anti-venom and required to stay at the vet overnight, but the following afternoon Ally was told he would survive and came to pick him up. She still can’t believe Macca made it home. “No one will understand, it’s easy to tell a story but no one will know exactly what we went through,” she said. “That ordeal was horrendous.
“If it wasn’t Shane driving, it would have been a different story. I can’t thank the vet enough for what they did.” Wildlife Victoria advises that snakes are more active in warm weather, with Australia home to about 140 land snake species and 32 sea snake species. It’s also advised that pets are kept indoors and on leads if walking to keep them safe. In case of an emergency, contact Wildlife Victoria on 12 000 WILDLIFE (13 000 94535).

NAOMI’S a fighter. Once her shift ends battling bushfires, another job begins. The single mum returns to her Narre Warren home to tend to her 16-year-old daughter, Sarah, who was born with a developmental delay and suffers from epilepsy and autism. Park ranger Naomi O’Byrne can speak to her daughter but Sarah can’t speak back. The teenager understands her mother but only uses sounds and gestures to respond. “Sarah means the world to me. She’s the reason I exist,” Naomi, 47, said. “If she’s gone for more than a couple of days I start to worry. I miss her; I think there’s something missing. “She’s obviously a part of me and I don’t know what I’d do without her. “She gives me joy. She’s funny, she’s resilient, and she’s great to be around.” In addition to Naomi’s 25year employment with Parks Victoria, the super mum volunteers regularly with the CFA and is a passionate member of Carers Victoria. Two weeks ago Naomi was part of a group that travelled to Horsham to relieve local firefighters as they battled a blaze in the Grampians. In 2009, when Naomi was working at Bunyip State Park, she found herself on the front line as bush fires which devastated half of the area in the days leading up to Black Saturday.

For me, personally, it was seeing the damage that had occurred to my park because we love what we do and we’re passionate about it. “It’s not about the money; it’s about the environment and the love of the job. And to see the devastation... the wildlife gone, trees were just black and scarred.”
Naomi’s draws on support from her family and friends to juggle all the commitments in her life with all roads leading back to her number one priority - Sarah. After becoming a single parent, she found help through becoming a member of Carers Victoria, meeting other people with shared experiences. “Having someone who understands, that’s not judgemental, is really important as a carer,” she said. “Life is just a total struggle. ADAM Haines is urging pet owners to update microchip contact details after battling to have his frail, 19-year-old dog returned to his care. City of Casey rangers picked up Buddha, a lhasa aspo, from the Animal Emergency Centre in Hallam and took it to the Cranbourne pound. He went missing from behind locked gates in Mr Haines’ Keysborough front yard about 7pm on Sunday 25 January. “We spent hours searching for him,” he said. “He can’t walk the few metres back from the park. He’s partly deaf, he’s partly blind. “He’s been to the vet a couple of times in the past three months, because we’re moni-
toring now - we’re monitoring for that time that he can’t go on any longer. “I knew someone had picked him up.” Mr Haines encountered trouble retrieving his beloved pooch when Buddha’s microchip details were linked to his former partner. “My ex and I split up 17 years ago, and he was microchipped 18 years ago,” he said. “When you’re young and you’re living life, you take for granted your little mates. “Losing him and not being able to find him was one thing, but to know he’s been locked away because of my irresponsibility ... “People need to be aware of what could happen.”

Jared’s legacy upheld by annual fund-raiser By BRIDGET SCOTT AN ANNUAL fund-raiser in honour of the late Jared Dunscombe will be held at Lysterfield Park next month to raise money for the charity One Disease. Jared’s sister Jonelle Colabufalo will spearhead plans for the five-kilometre walk on 21 February to keep the memory of her brother alive. Jared was killed at age 31 in 2013 when he was taking part in a Ride for Conference and was struck by a truck and trailer after falling off his bike.
He was a passionate and community-minded man and his family wishes to continue his legacy. “We’ve started a fund in memory of him to keep up his charity work,” Ms. Colabufalo said. “We want to make it a major, annual fund-raiser.” “It’s a chance for anyone who knew him to remember him on the anniversary of his death, and anyone else who has been inspired by his story.” Jared’s family and friends currently sponsor a community called Birritjimi, more than 600
kilometres east of Darwin with no medical clinic. Ms Colabufalo said the work of One Disease was important in these types of areas to help eliminate diseases such as scabies. Registrations will take place at 8am the morning of the event which will progress around the Hallam North Road walking tracks - the event is open to all. A group of Jared’s close friends and family are also set to visit the community they sponsor later on this year. “A group of us hope to go and

volunteer this year,” Ms Colabufalo said. About 200 people turned out for the walk last year which was held at Silvan Reservoir Park. With hopes to expand the event, all funds raised will help to continue Jared’s charity work. Ms Colabufalo spoke at an official function for the fund last year and said: “Our aim is to use Jared’s determined attitude to continue to inspire us to ensure that we make the Jared Dunscombe Fund a long lasting success and a long-term legacy for Jared.”

Art space kept in a clear focus
TENNIS clubs throughout the area have paired up with the City of Casey to make a racquet as they prepare to present a ‘nothing less than ace’ Casey Tennis Week. With activities set to kick off on Sunday 1 February, around 27 events have been planned for various locations including local tennis clubs. There will be something for everyone with choices ranging from club open days, social games, Hot Shots coaching, come and try sessions, a family fun day and a cardio tennis session. Council will also host its own event, a come and try totem tennis activity on Wednesday 4 February from 12.30pm until 3pm at the Casey Civic Centre. The activities will run through until February 8. City of Casey Mayor invited everyone to come down and have a hit at any of the events on offer. “Now in its seventh year, Casey Tennis Week gives those that have never tried the sport the chance to test it out, an opportunity for those who want to get back into it to do
so and gives tennis enthusiasts more reason to get out and enjoy the sport they love,” Cr Morland said. A NARRE WARREN-based dance school continues to go from strength to strength. Four students from Backstage Dance Academy qualified for the Showcase National Dance Championships held in Queensland this month, with the dance school achieving its best results since starting up seven years ago. Sophie Beaty, Ashley Diamond, Tahlia Williams and Kiara Drzewinksi all qualified for the national competition, held at Jupiters Hotel and Casino on the Gold Coast. ONE of Casey’s new art spaces is getting set to host two exhibitions in one space as part of a new and exciting council venture. The joint exhibition will run from Wednesday 4 February to Friday 27 March and will feature works from local artists Marie Warnecke and Jenny Conn. The Civic Centre Art Space will host the artworks and Mayor Mick Morland encourages the community to come along and experience some local talents. Ms Warnecke’s watercolour paintings titled Atmosphere and Aesthetics, focus on the moods of nature. Her works feature sunsets, wind streaked clouds and lowered skies. Ms Conn’s work, which will run alongside her fellow artist’s displays, is an exhibit of ceramics and clay jewellery. Ms Conn takes inspiration from various features from her own garden and incorporates these into her artworks. Councillor Morland commended the work of both artists adding they are well worth seeing. “Both artists are well-known locally and beyond for their talent, making this an exhibition not to be missed,” he said. “Ms Warnecke is a member of the Berwick Artists Society and an award winning watercolourist. “Her works have been exhibited widely across Australia, having held successful exhibitions in Townsville and Magnetic Island, before moving to Victoria.” “Ms Conn is an experienced ceramic artist and jeweller, having exhibited her work widely, as well as teaching ceramics and pottery at TAFE colleges. “She has also run workshops in the City of Casey as part of the popular Winter Arts Festival.”

NARRE Warren North MP and Roads Minister Luke Donnellan has called for greater pedestrian safety after new data indicated pedestrian deaths in Victoria rose by 22 per cent last year. Mr Donnellan joined Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner for Road Policing Robert Hill and car accident victim Anthony Bartl last week to stress the safety message ahead of the Australian Open, expected to draw roughly 700,000 pedestrians over two weeks. Last year 44 pedestrians were killed on Victorian roads, up from 26 in 2013. Of those 44, 73 per cent were men, while 29 per cent were aged 70 or over. “If you’re on foot, be safe around roads. Every passing car is potentially lethal and no text message is worth your life,� Mr Donnellan said. “Whether you’re embarking on a long country drive, or just walking up to the shop on a Sunday morning, distractions lead to disaster.� The rise in pedestrian deaths has seen the Transport Accident Commission extend its ‘distractions’ campaign,

Make the move to calisthenics MEMBERS of the Berwick Calisthenic Club are looking forward to the commencement of their 2015 season as the club achieves its 46th year in Berwick. Berwick Calisthenic Club has now earned the reputation as a leader in calisthenic excellence in the district while retaining its values of being family friendly and a fun environment for its pupils. While the club competes within the higher divisions of calisthenic competition it is also proud to be able to offer classes and teams to suit every ability of pupil from those who are new with no experience
through to those who are looking for extra challenges. Calisthenic students particularly love the fact that they get to perform several times per year on stage, not just for one end-of-year concert. The club offers classes from three years through to adults. It is particularly enjoying growing its Masters section for ladies aged over 26 years. This group of ladies is a mixture of former calisthenics girls and those who have never done calisthenics before but who are looking for an activity to share exercise, fun, laughter and friendship.
Calisthenics is an artistic team sport combining elements of gymnastics, dance, march, apparatus, modified ballet, song and develops stage craft and performance technique. Ages 3 years to Adult.

Firey’s faithful service By ANEEKA SIMONIS LONG-TERM firefighter Ivan Smith was honoured for almost 50 years of service with the Country Fire Authority (CFA) at the Australia Day Award Ceremony on Monday. Mr Smith, who began his dedicated career in protecting the community with the Narre Warren North Rural Fire Brigade in 1967, was awarded the Australian Fire Service Medal (AFSM) for his many triumphs, particularly his second-to-none service during Ash Wednesday and Black Saturday. Mr Smith was an accredited Level 3 Incident Controller during the Bunyip State Park Fire in 2009. “His outstanding leadership, and innovative approach to strategic planning and the use of trigger points, ensured that no lives were lost, and asset losses were minimised,” the award citation read. Mr Smith said Ash Wednes-
day in 1983 - a fire which claimed the lives of two crews of six firefighters - made him realise he would never give up protecting people from fire. “I knew the people there so well. We trained together and had barbecues together,” he said. “From that moment on I made a pact with myself ... while I could still draw breath, I was going to help prevent anything like that happening again.” After eight years of service at the Narre Warren North brigade, Mr Smith became captain in 1975. Among many notable achievements, Mr Smith championed the Australian Interagency Incident Management Systems (AIIMS) and helped other stations learn and use the vital incident report program. He was also commended for helping train new generations of fire service leaders, incident management personnel as well as helping communities prepare
their homes ahead of fire season. Mr Smith, who celebrated his milestone 70th birthday last week, said his career was much like a marathon - long but incredibly gratifying. “It feels pretty good getting reward after a long sustained effort,” he said. Cardinia Shire Council also had the pleasure of having Mr Smith on a fire safety committee for over 30 years. The dedicated firefighter served on the Cardinia Shire’s Local Advisory Committee/Fire Prevention Committee for several decades. He said the only problem with the prestigious Australia Day Award was that it didn’t formally acknowledge his wife, Gwen, who helped him fight every fire. “Without her, I wouldn’t function.” Mr Smith remains part of the Lang Lang CFA.

Nightmare on park street By BRIDGET SCOTT TRADERS along a busy street in Cranbourne are fed up with the overflow of cars as the redevelopments at Cranbourne Park continue. Cars have lined the tiny street that is Mundaring Drive for the past nine-12 months, much to the disappointment of business owners and residents along the road. Business owners said the extra cars were those of tradesmen and women who were part of the redevelopments happening at the major shopping complex next door. Karen Dixon from Cranbourne Park Chiropractic Centre said she had had patients complain, while some hadn’t been able to access the street at all. “How would an emergency vehicle get through?” she said. “Lots of patients have complained and some have had near misses.” Ms Dixon said she had given up contacting council and said
there needed to be some sort of parking restrictions along the road. City of Casey manager for Transport Ms Anitha Ajay said the council regularly inspected parking in Mundaring Drive, Cranbourne. “At the time of previous inspections, parking levels were comparable with other local residential streets with similar facilities and the traffic movement within the street deemed appropriate,” she said. “Once the school term commences, council will further investigate and assess the need for any parking restrictions in Mundaring Drive.” A spokesperson from Cranbourne Park said tradespeople working on site were “currently utilising a new underground car park that provides parking for more than 300 cars.” “We’ll open this car park when we unveil the transformed Cranbourne Park in late March,” they said.
Ms Dixon said traders were “fed up”, and with cars double parked on each side of the road it was very dangerous. Penny Phipps and Sue Lew from the dentist across the road from Ms Dixon’s practice have also had trouble, and said one of their customers was hit when exiting the car park, with their car ending up a write off. They said the added traffic and cars had deterred some customers from making appointments and said they had looked elsewhere. Both businesses have been along the road for more than 10 years, and the businesswoman agreed nothing like this has happened before. “It becomes a one-way street,” Ms Lew said. Ms Dixon said she was aware of parking spaces available within the complex and said there was only so long people along Mundaring Drive can put up with it.
And ready to cross at last By LACHLAN MOORHEAD THE ongoing quest to have a new pedestrian crossing installed at Fountain Gate Shopping Centre has finally come to an end, with Westfield announcing funding for the project. The development comes after two years of community campaigning to have a crossing set up at the Magid Drive site, with a 400-signature petition presented to Casey Council in 2013. Magid Drive borders part of the shopping centre and caters for a high volume of pedestrians who cross the road to access sporting clubs at nearby Max Pawsey Reserve, including the Narre Warren Bowls Club. The crossing is currently being completed. Resident Kerrie Puts, a driving force in compiling the recent petition, thanked Westfield Regional Manager Charlie Rimmer and local MPs Judith Graley and Luke Donnellan for helping campaign to make the crossing a reality. At Tuesday’s Casey Council meeting a motion was also carried to write to VicRoads seeking a reduction in the speed limit along the notorious section of Magid Drive from 60km/h to 50km/h. Huber hangs up By JARROD POTTER RETURNING home to end his baseball career is a thrill Major League Baseball alumnus Justin Huber still can’t fathom, even a few days after hanging up the glove for the last time on Saturday. After 14 years and traversing four continents following the game he loves, Huber, 32, originally from Emerald, decided it was time to call an end to his illustrious career. A Team Australia mainstay for the majority of his career, while also featuring on rosters everywhere including America, Latin America, Japan and the Caribbean, Huber has always been locally minded with his baseball and thought it a fitting end to his career to finish up at Melbourne Ballpark on Saturday. While Huber went hitless in his final professional baseball game, the Aces 2-4 loss to Adelaide, he received nothing but adulation and deafening applause from the enthusiastic Melbourne Aces crowd. “It still hasn’t really completely sunk in,” Huber said. “It was a really fantastic celebration and you don’t get many opportunities like that, one to go out on your own terms in professional sport, but also something that is pretty unique to my situation to get to do it on a professional field with a few guys I’ve played with since I was a kid.

“Scott Wearne, is from the area in Berwick, been playing with him since I was 12, Brad Harman and I grew up at the same club, Josh Davies and I have been playing for a long time as well. “There are some guys on that team that have shared a lot of baseball experiences together and to finish your career with the guys you started with is crazy - it really is a full circle and very special and I’m grateful for that.” From his roots as a junior T-baller playing for Upwey Ferntree Gully, all the way to the heights of professional baseball - with his MLB debut with the Kansas City Royals - and back to Melbourne for his final at-bats on Saturday, Huber could not have exited his beloved game on any better terms. “If you think about all the places I’ve played pro
baseball... all these places I’ve been playing, there were many times I could have hung up the boots, but to come back here and do it in front of the home crowd was very special and extraordinary,” Huber said. Huber’s retirement was spurred on in part by an unrefusable job opportunity - as the Aces have enlisted their former slugger to head up the back-office and become the club’s general manager. He’s keen to hit the ground running in his new role - which he started this week - and wants to bring the crowds in and entice the locals around Altona’s Melbourne Ballpark to make the trip down to watch a few matches. “That’s the main reason I’m taking an off-field role and realistically the next major challenge in my baseball
journey is seeing if we can fill those seats out at Altona,” Huber said. “(Engage) New and old baseball fans alike and really grow the sport and the franchise into the next great sporting organisation in Melbourne.” Huber wanted to thank everyone who has made his decades in baseball an amazing experience. “I can’t thank them enough,” Huber said. “It’s been an unbelievable ride for me - from a T-baller at Upwey Ferntree Gully as a six year old, to the height of my career in the major leagues and back to finish it all off in Melbourne and see a professional league come to Australia. “To see two Major League Baseball teams play at the MCG in March and the Australian team we got to play against them… beat the Arizona Diamondbacks, that sort of stuff I look back on and think I’ve been so lucky. “Without all those coaches, canteen ladies, scorers and volunteers… and people that supported me and made sure baseball happened in Victoria and Australia. It’s a blessing and remarkable… I’ll never be able to repay the debt to all those people that helped me out along the way. Huber’s Aces finished last this 2014/2015 ABL season with a 15-31 record.
Hunter plays the Blues WHILE his success in recent times would be enough for most sportsmen, Pakenham slugger Jesse Hunter is on the ready to make some even bigger hits on his baseball journey. Hunter, 15, from Pakenham, has kept busy in the last month as he won a gold medal as part of the Baseball Victoria under-16 state team. Played in New South Wales throughout January, the championship match boiled down to Victoria and Western Australia, staunch rivals throughout their rise through the age groups which Western Australia has dominated. This year however belonged to the Victorian Blues as Hunter and his team mates claimed an emphatic 13-5 victory on the back of an eight run seventhinnings. “I’ve lost to WA four years in a row including Little League and it’s a good feeling to win it and finally beat WA,” Hunter said. “Going into the seventh innings, top of it, we were fiveall… we started hitting and hitting… the team put in an amazing amount of effort and we scored all those runs. “I’ve never won a gold medal… this is the first one.” It capped off a sensational summer of accolades for Hunter, also receiving a School Sports Victoria Sports Award as the male recipient of the baseball award. “I didn’t know I was getting it… got a letter in the mail and it said I’d won the Victorian

In the meantime he’ll keep smashing any opposition pitcher as he plays summer baseball for the Berwick Cougars. CARDINIA Life in Pakenham became an international sport arena on the weekend with the staging of the Women’s World Floorball Championship qualification tournament. Teams from Australia, Japan, New Zealand and Singapore battled it out for the right to qualify for the WFC Final Round in Tampere, Finland. Only one team would miss out on qualification after the three-day event, with New Zealand missing out after a tough weekend at the office. Australian players Freya Carson, Kayleigh Tribe and Ashleigh Bourke, team manager Kim Daine and trainer Paul Hogg were all local participants as the Aussies won their second game against the Kiwis to qualify for the exciting next stage. Both teams come into the game looking for their first win of the tournament. Australia began well with Fiona de Courcier scoring first before Jess Roser scored her first international goal assisted by Lauren Hogan to put the home side up 2-0.
