After serving in Vietnam in the 1960s and retiring, Mr Boness joined the Mount Evelyn RSL, becoming president shortly after.

Cr McCarthy said the welfare of Mr Boness’s mates at the RSL came before everything else, and he was known to visit unwell members in hospital and aged care.

He also established a Thursday afternoon friendship group for retired members to catch up and share their stories. “Roger is passionate about preserving our Anzac heritage and regularly talks at schools, Scouts and the youth shed about the Anzac tradition,� Cr McCarthy said.

“He played an instrumental part in making over the local war memorial park and has overseen the publication of three books by the RSL detailing the history of Mount Evelyn’s military heritage.�

Cr McCarthy said all of the recipients were passionate about their communities and were well-deserving of the awards. “These people deserve to be acknowledged for their passion,� she said.

MOUNT Evelyn residents young and old scooped the Yarra Ranges Council’s Australia Day Awards ceremony yesterday, taking out three of the top honours at the event.

Prue Northey, 21, was named as Youth Citizen of the Year at the awards ceremony yesterday (Monday 26 January) at Burrinja in Upwey.

Ms Northey was one of three Mount Evelyn residents to take out major awards at the events, with former resident Ben Ellis receiving the Environmental Achiever of the Year award and Mount Evelyn RSL President Roger Boness receiving the Mayor’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Yarra Ranges Mayor Maria McCarthy said that each of the winners had “put their communities first� and that it was important to acknowledge their achievements.

Ms Northey, for example, has chaired the Yarra Ranges Relay for Life event for the last two years after joining the organising committee in 2012.

The event has drawn large numbers of teams from across the municipality, being originally based in Healesville before moving to Kalorama last year.

She said that she got involved with the event after losing her cousin to cancer six years ago. “After she passed away, my aunty put together a team in the Relay for Life in honour of her,� she said. “I spoke to the committee, got involved and it’s all gone from there.�

Mr Ellis, meanwhile, received his award for his ongoing work with the Friends of the Water Race and Quinn Reserve group, even after moving out of the area.

After the group began in 1998, Mr Ellis worked to secure grants from the council, Melbourne Water and Federal Volunteers to restore the reserve and river, which was Lilydale’s water supply from 1905-1915.

Cr McCarthy said that although Mr Ellis now lived in Mornington, his continued passionate work to preserve the waterways of Mount Evelyn made him an ideal award recipient.

Police hunt for sex pests

SEXUAL Crime Squad detectives are on the hunt for a man who allegedly sexually assaulted a woman in Mount Evelyn late last year.

Police believe the man assaulted the woman near Swansea Road between 2am and 4am on Saturday 27 December.

SES and Police members searched the scene on the morning of the incident, and are asking anyone with information, or who may have seen suspicious behaviour around the area at that time.

The man has been described as about 170cm tall with broad shoulders.

The alleged attack was followed by another the following night, where a man exposed himself to three girls on Bailey Road in Mount Evelyn at 8.45pm.

The man was described as 20 years old with light brown hair, medium height and build and was wearing a white singlet with orange and blue stripes, board shorts and thongs.

FALLEN World War I soldiers will have the anniversaries of their deaths commemorated by RSL members over the next four years as part of an ambitious project to mark the centenary of Anzac.

The Mount Evelyn and Lilydale RSLs have joined forces on the project, which will involve members laying a floral wreath at different WWI memorials on the 100th anniversary of local soldiers’ deaths.

Historian and Mount Evelyn RSL Secretary Anthony McAleer said the two RSLs were funding the wreath project, which would begin this Anzac Day. The first soldiers to be commemorated will be Leonard Joseph Lawlor and John Atkinson Metcalf, who both died on 25 April 1915.

Wreaths will be laid at the Coldstream/Yering War Memorial and the Moorolbark War Memorial respectively for each of the two soldiers at 11am.

Mr McAleer said that, with every one of the 64 soldiers, a small ceremony will be held, which will include a reading of the Ode to the Fallen.

He said the dates of the local soldiers’ deaths tell the story of the war as it unfolded, with a number of Diggers recorded as dying in large battles in the war.

“Have a look at July 1916 - that marks the battle of Pozieres,” he said.

“That was one village as part of the Somme campaign and one of the highest casualties that the Australian forces experienced during their time on the Western Front.”

Mr McAleer encouraged anyone who might be related to the fallen soldiers to attend the wreath-laying ceremonies, or to join in and lay a floral wreath of their own.

“We’d love to have some of those people involved with us - I would invite them to be a part of the ceremony,” he said.

Lilydale RSL President Don Parsons said the RSL would be working with children from primary schools on the commemorative services.

The final soldier whose death will be marked in the project will be Frank Lockwood Larkins, with a wreath to be laid at the Mount Evelyn War Memorial on 20 June 2019. Coldstream/Yering, Montrose, Mount Evelyn, Lilydale and Mooroolbark War Memorials will all be sites of the wreath-laying project.

The Blue Lotus is a cool pad YOU don’t have to be a teeny, tiny fairy to splash around on a lily pad at Yarra Junction’s Blue Lotus Water Garden.

As of last week, the garden is home to Australia’s largest Victoria Cruziana Waterlily leaf.

Cruziana is a variety of Amazon Lily that has giant lily pads which, because of their network of ribs, have incredible strength.

You couldn’t wipe the grin off owner and grower Geoff Cochrane’s face on Saturday, 17 January, when his top performer was measured at 170 centimetres, making it an Australian record.

Mr Cochrane said Australia’s previous largest leaf was grown at the Botanical Gardens in South Australia and was 165 centimetres in diameter.

Both the Cruziana and the Victoria amazonica are grown in the purpose-built Amazon House glasshouse at the gardens.

Over the past few weeks, excite-

ment has grown in pace with the leaf as the tape measure was brought out regularly in anticipation of an Australian record.

As the largest leaf in the pond edged its way towards its recordbreaking 170 centimetres, Mr Cochrane’s grandchildren Lily Fairy Kimberley and little brother Charley tested out claims that the lily pads can grow large enough to support the weight of a small child ... or in this case, two!

Looking every bit like cheeky little frogs, they splashed around on their lily pad, much to the delight of visitors.

While the Amazon Lily’s leaf is its most famous feature, it also produces huge, stunning flowers, over 30 centimetres in size, that open white then gradually turn pink before dying within 48 hours.

Visitors to the gardens, which are open for only 14 weeks each year, will now have bragging rights to having seen the biggest leaf in Australia ... in Yarra Junction!

Open Garden THE Old Bakehouse, set in the rolling hills of Macclesfield will be holding an open garden for the first time over the weekend of 14 and 15 February. Activities at ‘The Old Bakehouse’ open garden will include an art show by the Emerald Art Society, plant sales, a sausage sizzle, drinks and icypoles, kids' games and activities and a firetruck display. OAM for the garden master

By JESSE GRAHAM AN ICONIC Monbulk resident had years of hard work acknowledged yesterday, when he was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Australia Day Honours.

Wesley Fleming, of Monbulk’s Fleming’s Nurseries, received the medal yesterday (Monday 26 January) as part of the annual honours event, which acknowledges the efforts of extraordinary Australians.

Mr Fleming, 52, received his medal for service to the horticultural industry and to landscape architecture, and has had a lifelong passion for plants.

“What makes me so passionate about it is that it’s who I am,” he said.

“I’ve been brought up in the horticulture industry - I also worked at Pizza Hut for two nights, and those are the only two jobs I’ve ever had.

“It’s just who I am - it’s not a job, it’s a hobby. It’s a passion.

It’s a life.”

The nursery was opened in 1918 and has been run by the family ever since - Mr Fleming said even his three adult children are involved in the business.

One of Mr Fleming’s prominent accolades is a Best in Show medal at the Chelsea Flower Show, which Mr Fleming entered with designer Phil-

He said a driving force behind his entries in the show, which included elaborate, intricate and jaw-dropping garden designs, was to raise the public profile of the horticulture industry.

A strong driver of this, he said, was the increasing pressure of global warming and climate change.

“We can (now) talk to government, we can get in front of CEOs, we can achieve what we set out to do, and focus more time and energy and money here in Australia,” Mr Fleming said.

Part of that time and energy has since gone into childhood playground development, which Mr Fleming has worked on with the City of Ballarat and Deakin University.

He said that ditching plastic, “McDonald’s-style” play equipment in favour of well-designed natural areas, including gardens and green play areas, was already showing positive results on children at a trial kindergarten.

Mr Fleming said he was also passionate about urban development and utilising green spaces properly, and generally improving the world around him.

The march of survivors

By JESSE GRAHAM HUNDREDS of people marched down to Belgrave yesterday to mark the eighth annual Belgrave Survival Day. Held on 26 January, Survival Day acknowledges the survival of Indigenous heritage and culture, 200 years after the European arrival in Australia.

People of all backgrounds and from towns in the Dandenong Ranges and beyond came down to the event, with a group of about 50 people marching from Belgrave Station down to Borthwick Park, where the event was held.

The march was led by Robert Wandin and Justine IndigoRose, who carried large versions of the Indigenous totems, Bunjil the Eagle and Waa the Crow to the event, flanked by others carrying banners and signs.

Shortly after the event began at noon, Wurundjeri elder Uncle Bill Nicholson conducted a Welcome to Country ceremony, before Indigenous dance group Alinta performed to the crowd.

Organiser Bonnie Zuidland said she was happy with the turnout, noting the large Indigenous attendance at the event.

The theme of this year’s Survival Day was Caring for Country, and Uncle Bill said that everyone should have a part in taking care of the world around them.

“The old people knew for thousands of years that if the land was sick, so was the people, so we have to care for it and make it healthy,” he said.

Does the fatter matter?

It’s a much debated question up Warby way that may well be answered when the stats are gathered at the end of Warburton-Millgrove Football Club’s 2015 season.

The club’s new $10,000 ‘skinny’ goalposts went in last week, replacing the iconic former SEC concrete posts that have served the club well over the years.

Casey MP Tony Smith came through on his $10,000 pre-election promise of new posts and was at the ground last week with Yarra Ranges Councillor Jim Child, club president Rodney Woods and football manager Rodney McKail to test out the theory that skinnier posts are harder to hit.

While the concrete electricity pylons have their supporters (Woods said there had been some discussion on the club’s facebook page decrying the loss of the famous/infamous goalposts), they didn’t comply with current league regulations and were potentially costing the club the opportunity to host finals and other major games.

Woods said the club would be looking at attracting more of the high-profile games in the future.

“I’m very thankful we’ve got the new ones, but it has created a lot of chatter about the heritage aspect ... the old goal posts at Warby had become a bit iconic,” he said.

He’s sceptical however about the fat versus skinny conundrum. “There’s still the same width in between the posts and if you’re going to hit one, you’re going to hit it,” he said.

Jim Child, who played for Yarra Junction, and who may or may not have put one through the middle of the SEC towers in his day, and McKail who definitely put a few through, point out that circumference doesn’t matter in this case.

They point out that both teams are aiming for the same gaps.

The banter seesaws around who won the most B&Fs, and who should have won the most B&Fs. “I could have if I’d wanted to,” Woods shoots back.

In the end, they both have some club legends in mind for the honour, but that’s another story.

Right now, the club is focused on making further improvements, including new lights.

“There’s one reason behind these improvements and that’s to better our facilities, which we need to do to keep people coming here, playing here and enjoying the game here,” said Woods.

Keeping young players in the game is another focus and the club, in conjunction with Wesburn Ju-

nior Football Club, will run a football clinic for junior players at the Warburton ground on 15 February.

It’s open to any junior players and Woods said they were working with the senior league to get some high-profile players along on the day.

Cyclists tackle Everest in the hills

By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM CYCLING up Mount Donna Buang may seem a challenging ride, but a group of determined cyclists will climb the mountain nine consecutive times next month.

THE riders will be partaking in an “Everesting” event - a ride where cyclists ascend a minimum of 8848 metres to equal one ascent of Mount Everest.

There will be 25 specially invited female riders who will attempt nine ascents of Donna Buang in one continuous ride. Andy Van Bergen, organiser of the event, said that Everesting was the ultimate in cycling.

“It’s such an achievement to complete a ride

like this and definitely a highlight in a cyclist’s career. It’s no walk in the park.”

The collective ride will represent the largest ever Everesting group attempt, and will involve riders from multiple clubs, brands and groups. It will be the first of its kind in Australia.

The event is historically significant to Everesting itself, with George Mallory first achieving the climb in the mid-1990s on Mount Donna Buang.

George Mallory was the grandson of English Mountaineer George Mallory, who died in an attempt on Mount Everest in the 1930s.

This Everesting event, held on the mountain where it was first achieved, will make the attempt of great significance to many road cyclists.

The event will commence from Warburton at midnight and cyclists will ride throughout the day on Saturday, 7 February. A free Domestique ride will also run on the day and the public is invited to come and support the riders by riding a lap with them.

A reduced speed will be in place on the day, as well as free hydration and nutrition and a photographer to capture the athletic feats of riders.

Fine knocks from future stars at Olinda OLINDA JUNIOR CRICKET UNDER-10S are still on a break but training resumes this Wednesday.

UNDER-12 (2): Olinda took on fourth-placed St Andrew’s at Manson Reserve in a one-dayer with nine players. Max Thornton (26) and Ziggy Hatherley both retired in the top-order, and were able to come back at the end with a 23-run

partnership to get their team to 8/68.

The bowling and fielding were really good as St Andrew’s passed the score in the second-last over to finish at 6/82. Max Thornton again in the action with a wicket and some really quick bowling.

Under-12 (5): The team travelled to North Ringwood and gave a polished display. Bowling first, the

team kept the Bulls to 5/59 with Gidi Talmi taking 2/3 off his two overs, and Ethan Blenkiron also picking up 1/5. In reply, they posted a fantastic 7/107 with Tom Price nailing 18, Xander Oldfield finishing at 17 not out, and Hamish Fraser and Lachey Bates both chipping in with 11.

Under-14 hosted Ringwood, the team bowled first and had the Rams

all out off the last ball for 96. Jonty Scott claimed 3/9 off two overs and Frank Seal 2/2 off the last over. In reply, the team was on pace early but couldn’t maintain the rate until the end, finishing at 5/88 in reply. Aiden Ardley chipped in with 22 and Marc Feltham soldiered on for 12 not out at the end.

Top spot shot is all but signed, sealed

By CHRIS ANDERSON YVCA ROUND 11 has served up a tasty trio of matches in the Yarra Valley’s premier grade D.J. Strachan Shield, with top spot up for grabs, a place in the top four, and a much-needed win for a couple of sides.

Hot conditions greeted the players, an opportunity to make any bowling attack toil hard early.

However, it was the bowlers who dominated, obviously eager to seek the cool of the pavilion.

In the biggest game of the round, Seville is hosting Warburton-Millgrove where top position is up for grabs, as well as a little psychological advantage with finals around the corner.

With the game eagerly anticipated, disappointment emerged the winner on day one, as WarburtonMillgrove’s psychological advantage has become more of a visit to the mental institution for the Blues batsmen.

Seville batted first and had no answers to the Burra’s all-round attack.

As this season has progressed, Warburton-Millgrove has emerged as the team to beat in the premiership race.

They have established that they have the best batting line-up in the

competition, but Saturday proved they have a versatile bowling attack to match.

The Burras shared the wickets, led by Daniel Lever (3/21), to completely push aside the home team for a dismal 85.

Scores under 100 are tough to defend, and although the Blues put on some early pressure, the explosive David Lever’s blistering 54 all but led his team to the chasing target, with the visitors finishing on 3/74.

The game now finds itself all but over, with the only question remaining will Warburton-Millgrove chase outright points, or use the remaining overs to bat on and grind their opposition into the turf.

The other key match-up is the clash where Yarra Junction is hosting Mount Evelyn with fourth position on the ladder up for grabs.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Yarra Junction’s batsmen let their captain’s good fortune go to waste as they had no match for another consistent bowling display.

The Rovers’ bowlers shared the wickets as they put the Eagles under pressure from the first ball.

Opener Marcus Hottes was the only batsman showing fight.

However, with his wicket falling at 7/51, there was a moment where it looked as if the total would be

rounded out for under 80.

A useful partnership from Hayden Wilson (27) and Terry Ottrey ensured the total reached three figures, but it wasn’t much greater as the home team was bowled out for 104.

It was a case of the young and the old, or should I say experienced, with the ball as up and coming spinner Jed Thompson (3/15) and veteran Chris Anderson (3/12) led the bowling for the visitors.

With Mount Evelyn racing to 30, Yarra Junction were immediately put under pressure, but a brace of wickets from leggie Pat Ford (2/7) gave the home side a sniff of wickets.

However, opener Dan Fraser (34 not out) and young gun Jon Williams ensured the Rovers would reach stumps at 2/49 against some good bowling.

Although in the driver’s seat, Mount Evelyn is still a way from the target and early wickets from the Eagles could have them well in this contest, but they would have to be quick as the total is well short of the mark.

The final contest of the round sees Healesville host Hoddles Creek in a battle between the competition’s strugglers.

Both sides have had their mo-

ments this season, but haven’t had the consistency or depth to really challenge the better teams in the competition.

Healesville batted first under sunny skies, and the day panned out to be a classic battle between bat and ball.

At the end of the day, Healesville finished to be all out for 173.

Pace duo Dave Chesney (4/56) and Nick Bark (2/24) continue to show their emerging talents and development as they led Hoddles Creek’s attack, and they had the hosts under some early pressure.

However, a rear-guard partnership between the Blood’s star brothers, Scott (65) and Ash (41) Hamer, ensured the home team would bat most of their overs to compile the competitive target.

Both sides would be relatively happy with the situation of the game after day one.

Hoddles Creek possess enough fire power with the bat that if they can muster some early fortitude to resist a collapse, then a chase of 174 is well within their means.

However, Healesville does have an attack with a variety that will ask plenty of questions, and as is the case with young fielding teams, if they get their wind up, they will be hard to keep out.
