TAFE timeline

By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM EVELYN MP Christine Fyffe has called on Education Minister James Merlino to announce a timeline for the reopening of Swinburne Lilydale.

But Mr Merlino said last week that the Minister for Skills and Training, Steven Herbert, had been in talks with Swinburne management but as yet no arrangement had been made.

“The Minister for Skills and Training has had a positive meeting with the Vice Chancellor and senior staff at Swinburne to discuss the best option for the re-opening of the Lilydale campus,“ he said.

“The minister will engage with TAFE and higher education providers to ensure the best outcome for the region.”

The University and TAFE provider was shut down in mid-2013 as a result of cuts to TAFE made by the Baillieu Government. In March 2014, Labor leader Daniel Andrews announced that the facility would be re-opened under a Labor Government and committed $10 million to the refurbishment of facilities.

Mr Merlino said Labor was rebuilding the system after the severe funding cuts.

“We cannot forget that the Liberals took this campus away and the Andrews Labor Government is going to put it back, because our kids deserve the best start,” Mr Merlino, who is also the Member for Monbulk, said.

At an adjournment debate on 23 December last year, Ms Fyffe said constituents were “entitled to have answers to their questions” on the promised reopening.

“The minister has made

many statements about reopening the site, yet the community has no information as to when and by whom,” Ms Fyffe said in a speech to parliament.

Ms Fyffe also addressed the “unrealistic” rental fees set

by Swinburne, preventing the new Box Hill TAFE campus from moving onto the site.

“Box Hill Institute has instead leased a former new car dealership site in the centre of Lilydale within easy walking distance of transport and shops.”

Mr Merlino reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the TAFE system, stating that the government was working to find a suitable provider to take over the site. He said the government had brought forward the first part of its TAFE funding, for more immediate benefit to students.

“The Andrews Labor Government is committed to rebuilding our struggling TAFE system, after the previous Coalition Government’s cuts brought the sector to its knees.

That’s why we’re fast tracking the first $20 million of our $320 million TAFE Rescue Fund.

“The fast-tracked funding will help TAFEs in financial turmoil to stay afloat, so they can retain staff and improve training, courses and job opportunities for students.”

A building on the site of the former university is currently being leased by Melba Support Services, which has been given $1 million to build on the site. Other buildings on the former campus sit vacant.

Box Hill Institute’s Lilydale campus will open its doors to students later this month.

Ready to party - in nine months!

MOUNT Evelyn’s Street Party may still be nine months away, but Tim and Paula Herlihy, left, Yolande Pickett, Bram Marvell, Dianne Bull, Cheryl Mackay, Miranda Marvell and Cassie Mackay are already ramping up the preparations for the gigantic biennial event. The group is made up of just some of the people organising a sub-committee through the Mount Evelyn Township Improvement Committee (METIC) to organise the street party, which will be held on 14 October. Drawing around 5000 people to the area and containing displays from almost every community group in the area, organising the party is a colossal task, and the group is looking for people to come on board.

By JESSE GRAHAM PASSIONATE and enthusiastic Mount Evelyn residents are being sought to lend a hand as preparations for the Mount Evelyn Street Party get underway.

The Mount Evelyn Township Improvement Committee (METIC) is forming a sub-committee to coordinate the street party, which is held every two years.

The sub-committee will be meeting at 6pm on Monday 2 February at the Mount Evelyn Community House (the old Station House on Wray Crescent), and event co-ordinator Yolande Pickett said anyone

was welcome to lend a hand.

Ms Pickett, a Mount Evelyn resident who co-ordinated the Healesville 150th Street Parade in November last year, said that no experience was necessary - only enthusiasm for the event and the town.

“I have plenty of ideas that I’m excited to bring to the committee, but I won’t be making the decisions alone,” she said.

She said general committee members would be needed to assist with small tasks and spreading the word about the event, but that there was also a number of higher positions available.

The roles of vice-chair, secretary, sponsorship, publicity, competitions and fundraising, volunteer co-ordination and chief safety officer are all up for grabs, according to Ms Pickett, who said she will support each of the members in their role.

METIC chairperson Sue Colverson said that the street party was a large event in the community calendar, and urged people to get involved any way they can.

“We all join together and put on a fun family day, providing an opportunity not only for the locals to get involved but as a way to showcase our wonderful town and its

surrounding attractions to a much wider audience,” she said.

“Why not get involved, join the committee, encourage your community group or business to provide an activity or stall and don’t forget to tell all of your friends.”

The event will be held on Saturday 14 October 2015, with familyoriented activities, stalls, music and attractions.

Carvin’ it all up A COMBINATION of sport and art saw sawdust fly at SkyHigh in Mount Dandenong last week, when worldwide competitors converged for the Australian Chainsaw Carving Competition.

Ten competitors from around the globe took part in the gruelling 35-hour carving competition, which stretched from Tuesday 13 to Saturday 17 January before finishing with a public auction.

Each of the carvers used chainsaws, drills, angle-grinders and any power tool they could to shape, whittle and sculpt beautiful pieces from the wood, with incredibly detailed results.

Wandin-based sculptor Rob Bast was crowned the winner of the competition with his dragonfly sculpture, which included intricate holes all over the insect’s outstretched wings.

Mr Bast, who was awarded $3000 for his work, said that with heavy machinery combined with intricate design and flair, the competition and the job was a mixture of sport and art.

“It really is a niche market in Australia,” he said.

“We have to train for these competitions as well as have that creative flair, too - that sort of artistic bent.”

The competitors were well-invested in the event, with Australian sculptor Leigh Conkie taking on the four-day carve with a broken rib.

That investment began long before the event for some, though - Mr Bast said he spent days designing and laying out his dragonfly idea, finishing his plans at 11.30pm the night before the competition.

But he said the result of that planning spoke for itself.

“It really pays to plan ahead,” he said.

“You’ve definitely gotta make yourself a bit of a timeline, otherwise you’ll get behind the eightball or finish ahead of time and think ‘I could have spent more time on this or that’.”

Japan’s Hikaru Kodama received $2000 for his second-placed entry, the Last Judgement, while England’s Tim Burgess came third with his sculpture, Community, earning $1000 in the process.

The sculptures varied greatly in their content, with peacocks, dinosaurs and even Crocodile Dundee holding a crocodile being carved into the wood before spectator’s eyes.

SkyHigh’s General Manager Richard Pitts told

the Mail the competition was in its second year and had grown dramatically since its first run.

Last year’s competition featured 14 hours for the carvers to create their works - compared to roughly 35 hours in last week’s competition.

“It’s exhausting, but you get a little more competitive,” Mr Bast said.

“You really push yourself to get as much done as you can in the 35 hours, and you can see the results - the calibre of the sculptures was just phenomenal.”

Mr Bast was one of the organisers of last year’s event, but said he took a step back from that role to focus on competing this year.

Even though the weather became grey, foggy and rainy throughout the week, both Mr Pitts and Mr Bast said the sunny finish to the event on Friday and Saturday drew large crowds and boosted morale for those taking part.

Thieves urged to come clean BELGRAVE Police are searching for information after thieves made off with a number of garden taps.

Police believe that overnight between 18-19 January, properties in Sophia Grove in Belgrave and Walter Street and Sandells Road in Tecoma had their water turned off and taps stolen.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Belgrave police on 9754 6677.

Large haul POLICE are searching for information and witnesses after a house was burgled in Montrose last week.

Lilydale CIU Detective Sergeant Mark Smithwick said that at noon on Thursday 15 January, a house on Browns Road in Montrose was broken into and burgled.

A computer, cash, jewellery and a trombone were all stolen, and Det Sgt Smithwick said the total cost of the stolen goods is estimated at $6700.

He said that two women were sighted near the property at the time of the crime, and asked anyone with information to call Lilydale police on 9739 2300.

POLICE are hunting down numerous motorbikes after thieves broke into a shipping container and stole thousands of dollars in machinery.

Between 30 December and 12 January, thieves cut their way through a fence on a rural property on Beenak Road in Yellingbo, used tools to peel back the side of a shipping container and stole the contents.

A Yamaha TTR 50 and a 125cc orange trail bike were stolen, along with a mountain bike and a black and yellow water pump.

The cost of the stolen goods is estimated at $8500.

Council by-election set

By JESSE GRAHAM LYSTER Ward residents will be heading to the polls in March to choose a new councillor, following Samantha Dunn’s State Upper House victory late last year.

Yarra Ranges Council announced earlier this month that residents in the ward would be heading to the polls before 28 March for a by-election, with nominations to begin next month.

The by-election follows Cr Dunn’s victory in the Eastern Metropolitan seat in the Victorian Upper House for the Greens Party in the 29 November state election.

New candidates for the election will be able to come forward between 19-24 February, with ballot packs mailed out to eligible voters between

10-12 March. All votes must be returned by 6pm on Friday 27 March, and Yarra Ranges Council’s Director of Corporate Services Troy Edwards encouraged all residents to ensure they were enrolled to vote before the 30 January cut-off date.

“Yarra Ranges Council encourages all eligible voters to participate in elections,” he said.

Mr Edwards said all voters listed on the state electoral role must vote in federal, state and local elections, though those aged over 70 may be excused from voting in council elections.

“Our objective is to have all enrolled voters actually vote in the election for their favourite candidate,” he said.

for Yarra Ranges Shire Council is eligible to run for the position of Lyster Ward Councillor, as long as they fit certain criteria.

For example, a person must not be a member of a state, territory or federal parliament or a councillor in another municipality and must be over 18, among other conditions.

Mr Edwards said the by-election process was estimated to cost between $50,000 and $100,000, though the final cost would be determined through the number of candidates and the number of fines for non-voters.

“Given this, we are unable to estimate what the final costs of the byelection will be,” he said.

In a final blog-post on her website, Ms Dunn reflected on her time

at the council and thanked those who supported her over the years.

“I thank everybody who’s helped me along the way, there’s been much laughter, some great community outcomes and I’ve made friendships that will endure through time,” she wrote.

Ms Dunn was the council’s longest serving female councillor, after being elected in 2005.

All Lyster Ward voters must be registered by 30 January to be eligible to vote.

Police have released a CCTV image of the man involved in a Lilydale hold-up.

Robbed at knifepoint

By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM POLICE are searching for a male offender after an armed hold-up in Lilydale two weeks ago.

The man entered the Priceline Pharmacy on Main Street around 3pm on Wednesday 7 January.

He approached a female staff member and produced a large knife, demanding she hand over cash from the register before fleeing the scene on foot.

The man is described as Caucasian and about 30 years of age. He is 180cm tall with a thin build, goatee beard and hair tied back in a ponytail. At the time of the incident, he was wearing blue jeans, a brown T-shirt and dark sunglasses.

ple cared for the land they lived on.

RESIDENTS from all over the hills are being invited to come together next week to celebrate the survival of Indigenous culture and heritage at the annual Belgrave Survival Day. Held on Australia Day (Monday 26 January), Survival Day is a volunteer-organised event that will kick off at noon at Borthwick Park in Belgrave.

Organiser Bonnie Zuidland told the Mail that the event aims to commemorate the area’s Indigenous culture and its survival two centuries after European arrival in 1788.

With the event now in its eighth year, Ms Zuidland said Survival Day was looking bigger than ever, with 2004 Australian Idol winner Casey Donovan performing at the event.

“They just get bigger and better each year - I’d say they’re pretty successful events,” she said “Considering it’s an event that’s been going for eight years, that’s a good sign.”

Ms Donovan joins Aboriginal hip-hop artist Miss Hood, Melbourne soul-pop performer Chachi, Joe Geia, and Gnarnayarrahe Waitiarie, who will all perform live.

Music is just one part of the afternoon event - a Welcome to Country and traditional smoking ceremony will be conducted by Wurundjeri Elder Uncle Bill Nicholson, followed by traditional dances that the audience will be invited to take part in.

She’s a real award winner

By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM HELEN Beck makes it her business to work with the best of the best.

The Mount Dandenong resident owns ‘Gifts to Impress’, a company producing jewellery as well as trophies for various groups around Australia.

Having worked in the arts and hospitality her whole life, Helen began making jewellery to sell at markets to raise money for an overseas trip.

She spent time in Sweden studying crafts such as metalwork, woodwork, Swedish helm and weaving.

On returning to Melbourne, Helen and husband Stephen decided to do a ‘tree change’ and relocate to the hills to continue producing jewellery and awards.

The process of making a trophy varies with each individual piece Helen and Stephen create, and they make a point of sourcing high quality materials from the local area.

“We use local timber and glass as well as acrylic, stainless steel, pewter, gold, bronze or brass.

“Included with every trophy we make is a written piece about the process behind the award, where the timber came from, where the stones came from ... ” Helen and her husband have run the business together for the past 14 years and have never used any form of advertising, relying solely on word of mouth to spread the message. She says it’s a partnership with all the right ingredients.

“He comes from an engineering background and I’m more creative, so we work really well as a team.”

Over her career, Helen has worked with major organisations to create prestigious awards. She recalls one particularly important design brief:

“We had only a week to design and produce a gift from the City of Melbourne to their sister city - Milan.

“We produced two wall plaques, one for Milan and one that hangs on the wall at the Town Hall. The plaques were magnificent pieces of redgum burl timber, with a sandblasted section split in two representing the northern and southern hemispheres.”

Other awards that Helen has designed and produced include trophies for the AFL NAB Cup, the F1 and Grand Prix trophies and two international horse racing trophies.

The business is currently in partnership with The Asia-Pacific Tennis League to produce trophies for Tennis Australia.

Currently in the process of setting up a studio in Mount Dandenong, Helen says she enjoys the creative aspect of her work and hopes to continue to serve the Dandenong Ranges and beyond well into the future.

“We plan to continue utilising many of the gifted artisans and materials from this area, as well as Australia.

“We are looking forward to the completion of our small gallery and workshop, and continuing our core business in both jewellery and custom-made awards.”

Yes, there’re things done and said earlier in my life I wish I hadn’t!

That said, I - very foolishly ploughed back far too much into a business to the benefit of my employees (and not, to my family)!

Also, I funded the O.J. Simpsontype civil case in South Australia to expose (while exposing my own family to very possible great danger) the heinous Frank Mercuri, murderer of two women and sexual assaulter of who knows how many more!

In recent years I faced down a hammer-wielding felon half my age, threatening a distraught lady on the Eastern Freeway, with three police units attending!

(My modest, efforts also contributed to Moira Kelly securing the farm where disadvantaged children world-wide recuperate after life changing surgery.)

So, Daniel Andrews and James Merlino, just what do you say across the table to your children now, about ‘right and wrong’ and your contribution to society at meal times?

Because, despite my beautiful wife receiving wonderful emergency ambulance attention in recent years the paramedic unionists, using the vile, “losing-of-lives” inference of “1 in 4 ambulances do not arrive in time” signage at polling stations, plus, their in-para-uniform “Ambos behaving like Rambos” demonstrations I witnessed first-hand at Liberal election rallies did not have even one “Florence Nightingale on Wheels” to their credit!

And there may have been Black Saturday fire-fighter heroes among the fake firies I encountered at polling booths so very

unheroically, using the unfounded, and truly, scurrilous: “Napthine slashes ... You burn” signage on their clothing against the thoroughly decent, Dr Denis Napthine who, has saved many animals’ lives (including many a family pet) as a very kindly country vet!

Now, we have Dan Andrews (and I presume James Merlino) at loggerheads with Victoria’s great keepers of the peace, Victoria Police, of Andrews’ wanting barbaric, primeval cage-fighting!

And Andrews (and Merlino) have appointed Royal Commission frowned-upon Cesar “Slush Fund” Melhem as Whip in the Upper House! (Apparently, many Labor insiders reckon Melhem, should only be rewarded with a real good whipping in the Parliamentary outhouse?)

Daniel Andrews and James Merlino, will you both now tell the public what you will tell your children (so that they, may explain to their friends!) just why, you accepted the - so pernicious - support of those just mentioned; and just why you both are so - metaphorically speaking - snuggled up (and not, merely topping and toeing!) in bed, with the so bikie-gang/ organised crime tainted, violent historied CFMEU? We’re all waiting!

Although I have not lived in the Yarra Valley for a few years I still get to read The Mail.

Imagine my humbled surprise when I read that Melissa Meehan remembered me in her parting words on 16 December as former Editor of the Mail Newspaper Group.

Melissa interviewed me several years ago regarding unwed mothers of the 1950s-1970s who had

their babies taken against their will.

I shed many tears that day relating all that happened to me and so many, many other mothers.

I remember saying to her as we were talking that I just wanted someone to say “sorry” for what was done to us.

As this beautiful and so young then reporter left my home she turned to me on the stairs, looked up at me and said so sincerely “I am sorry.” Melissa you left a mark on my heart that day that will stay with me for the rest of my life. I wish you health and happiness always.

I am unsure if you will print the following but I wanted to add that it is newspapers like The Mail and their reporting that aided in bringing about an apology from our then Prime Minister and supported by the opposition.

The PM apologised to mothers “who were betrayed by a system that subjected you to manipulation, mistreatment and malpractice”.

She also apologised for the “... coercion and brutality of practices that were unethical, dishonest and in many cases illegal.” And that “you were not legally or socially acknowledged as their (our children) mothers.”

Many mothers (me included) are still fighting for justice for the physical and mental abuse we suffered and the unlawful abduction of our newborn babies (validated by a senate inquiry).

We will never give up this fight as there are thousands and thousands of Victorian mothers who still do not have the courage to speak out about the unlawful removal of their babies that are counting on us to keep up this fight for their right to justice.

Once again, so very sincerely, thankyou, thankyou.

Pirate radio takeover

By ANEEKA SIMONIS IT WAS like a coup in reverse - the day the radio station took over a former site of authority.

Emerald-based radio station 3MDR-97FM, with Emerald Community House (ECH), ‘annexed’ the old Emerald police station dressed in pirate gear on Saturday, claiming the deserted building is a muchneeded space for community groups in the area.

3MDR spokesperson Dale Blair, who formed part of the live broadcast outside the Kilvington Drive police station, said Cardinia Shire Council needed to support hills’ community groups by providing them with better operating facilities.

“The previous State Government squandered millions of dollars building a new police station that has neither improved police services nor public safety,” he said.

“Meanwhile dynamic community groups such as 3MDR and ECH are taking up the slack filling gaps and delivering services that the council and state governments cannot provide while operating out of inadequate premises.”

The radio station proclaimed the building as the ‘rightful property’ of Emerald and wider Mountain District residents on-air at 12pm on Saturday 17 January.

Though the scallywags were unable to properly board and capture the old police building - instead broadcasting from the site’s car park- their hopes of claiming the site have not been sunk yet.

“We are hopeful that the new government will not exhibit the same inertia of the previous government and current council and see the benefit of investing in community

Green light for speed camera

The radio station said they got 1000 Cardinia Shire residents to sign a petition in support of council purchasing the building for community use, but council will not budge.

“Council does not intend to purchase the building,” a shire media spokesperson said.

Station manager Phil Ruck said the current radio headquarters had a range of safety and access issues.

“We do have concerns about safety,” he said.

“The space is rather inadequate.

There is no disability access, so not all members of the community can get access so we are excluding a section that may want to get involved."

A PESKY Lilydale speed camera is accurate and in working order, an independent investigation has found.

Road Safety Camera Commissioner Gordon Lewis released a report at the end of last year detailing the findings of his study on the fixed speed camera and a red light camera, both located on the Maroondah Highway in Lilydale.

The investigation was prompted after allegations that the devices were faulty and issuing incorrect fines, Mr Lewis wrote.

The cameras caught out 11,576 motorists in their first quarter of operation after they were activated in March, 2014.

They were fitted after concerns were raised about the safety of pedestrians in the busy area, which is in close proximity to a high school.

Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe, local traders and the Yarra Valley Highway Patrol Division all supported the decision.

The report highlighted that most traffic offences occurred during the weekend, leading Mr Lewis to believe that tourists might be caught out most.

“It is reasonable to assume that many of the incidents detected during weekends result from motorists who do not live locally travelling between Melbourne and the Yarra Valley tourism area and beyond.”

The commissioner received 12 formal complaints about the speed and red light cameras at the site, which together caused Victoria Police to issue $2.4 million in fines during their first three months of operation.

Maiden CFA open garden

By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM EXQUISITE scenery and stunning views will greet visitors to an open garden to benefit the Macclesfield CFA next month.

‘The Old Bakehouse’ will be hold-

ing its first open garden over the weekend of 14 and 15 February.

The garden offers stunning views of the Warburton Ranges and Mount Donna Buang and features ornamental plantings and highly productive areas.

A keen horticultural eye will also spot the rare emerald star bush throughout the five acres of bushland.

The event is being held as part of the Australian Open Garden Scheme and will raise much-needed funds to assist the Macclesfield Fire Brigade in

replacing one of its tankers.

As well as allowing guests to roam the impressive gardens on the property, activities held on the day will include an art show hosted by the Emerald Art Society, plant sales, a sausage sizzle,

kids’ games and a firetruck display.

The garden will be open from 10am-4.30pm on both Saturday and Sunday. Entry is $8 for adults and the garden is located at 467 Macclesfield Road, Macclesfield.

Cut-through message TEN world-class competitors took on the Australian Chainsaw Carving Competition last week at Skyhigh Mount Dandenong, making beautiful and elaborate structures with heavy machinery.

The competitors, who hailed from as far afield as America, Japan and England, faced off in the competition from Tuesday 13 to Saturday 17 January before auctioning off their artworks and having the winner crowned.

The Yarra Valley’s own Rob Bast was crowned winner with his dragonfly sculpture, winning

$3000, while Japan’s Hikaru Kodama won $2000 in second place with his piece, the Last Judgement and English competitor Tim Burgess received $1000 for his sculpture, called Community.

The competition was fierce, with intricate sculptures being whittled into shape over the week.

MOVIES Rare treat in the hills CELTIC music fans will be in for a treat this Sunday, when performers will fill the Emerald Community House hall with classical tunes from across the ocean. Sacred, Classical and Celtic is an afternoon concert being held at the Community House from 3pm on Sunday, 25 January, featuring a trio of expert musicians.

Singer and guitarist, Jacqui Rutten will join viola da gamba player Miriam Morris and flutist Johanna Selleck for the concert, which Ms Rutten said would be a treat for all fans of the genre.

“The songs range from ornamental chant, Gregorian chant, Irish songs, Scottish songs and one English song and perhaps a couple of wellknown pieces,” Ms Rutten said.

She said the performers joining her on stage would have a wealth of experience, with Ms Morris a teacher at Melbourne University and a player in many major orchestras, and Ms Selleck as a soloist with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

“I’m excited - the other musicians are very skilled.”

The show will be a one-off

for the Dandenong Ranges, and Ms Rutten said she hoped to fill the halls of the Community House with lovers of sacred, Celtic and classical music.

The performance will begin at 3pm on Sunday 25 January at Emerald Community House and finish at around 4pm.

Entry is $15, $10 for concession-holders and seniors, and children under the age of 12 receive free entry.

Two decades of mourning Mr Hall and his wife, Liz. One of the most poignant tributes, according to Mr Hall, was from the Cockatoo Fire Brigade.

“They actually had to attend the accident at the time,” he said.

“I know it was very hard for some of their people - some of those people are still in the brigade, same as ours.

“Right through the whole 20 years, the support we’ve had has been absolutely amazing, from the likes of the paper, the brigades, friends and the public - it does help you, you know, handle it a bit better. You never get over it, but you do tend to live with it as time goes on.”

At the time of his death, Anthony was captain of the Junior Brigade at Upwey.

One of the silver linings in the years following the death of the boys was the establishment of the Anthony and Travis Hall Memorial Driver Education Fund, which has been running for

around 17 years.

The Memorial Education Fund, in partnership with Murcotts Driving Excellence, provides young drivers with a number of safe driving courses, which are valued around $300 apiece.

Mr Hall said it was suggested by a member of the brigade who had taken his daughter for a defensive driving course.

Combined with the work of local identity Peter Marke and sponsorship from businesses and residents, the fund has seen around 80 drivers take on the course and learn how to navigate dangerous and potentially life-threatening situations.

Mr Hall said the important message for young drivers was that the learning process never stopped, and a life could be wasted in seconds due to bad decision- making.

“I’ve been driving heavy trucks, buses and fire trucks for over 50 years, and I’m still learning,” he said.

“The trouble is, you try to tell this to young ones, but, no, they’ve got a bit of paper and a P-plate on their windscreen.

“I did some stupid things (driving) when I was young, I think we all did.

But nowadays, you can’t do it - you’ve got to be so careful out there.”

The road toll is an important issue for Mr Hall, who, with his wife, took part in the TAC ‘Pictures of You’ campaign - the anti-speeding campaign features families holding photographs of children who have died on the roads.

The numbers that make up the road toll become more significant when every two could be someone else’s Anthony and Travis Hall.

He’s seen the toll drop over the years - the Victorian road toll in 2013 was the lowest on record at 243 deaths - but Mr Hall said the amount of road deaths in the last decade alone was still staggering.

January 2015, 6449 people have been killed on Victorian roads - almost enough to wipe the entire town of Upwey off of the map.

As a firefighter of over 47 years, Mr Hall is often called out to road crashes where serious injuries or fatalities occur, but he said despite everything, he still turned out and worked behind the scenes when he could.

“Sometimes, I’ve come home upset,” he said.

“But I think if I didn’t go, I’d be chucking in the towel which, for me, isn’t on.”

A lot can change in 20 years, but Mr Hall’s memory of his sons - whose antics earned them the nicknames of Search and Destroy - remains as strong as ever.

A LOT can change in 20 years.Two decades have passed since Peter Hall’s two teenage sons, Anthony and Travis, were tragically killed in a Cockatoo car accident, and he remains resolute that one road death is one too many.

Mr Hall was the Upwey Fire Brigade’s 1st Lieutenant when his sons, aged 15 and 13 respectively, died on 4 January 1995 - they had accepted a lift to a milk bar from a friend, who failed to negotiate a bend and crashed into a tree.

To mark the anniversary each year, Mr Hall visits the site of the crash to lay flowers. The 20th anniversary earlier this month was no exception.

“It’s the only time I ever go near there,” he said.

He told the Mail that a post on Upwey Fire Brigade’s Facebook page on the anniversary spurred on a number of heartfelt tributes and kind words for

Matt guides Eagles home YVCA IN DJ Strachan Shield, Yarra Junction bounced back from their disappointing collapse against Warburton-Millgrove with a moral boosting victory against association front-runners Seville. In the process, they have kept themselves in touch with the top four, and have proven their credentials in the premiership race despite the slip up last round. In a great game of cricket befitting a final itself, Seville batted first and in a similar innings to last week, it posted a competitive total of 7/158 on the back of another useful contribution from Ryan Akers (40). The Blues would’ve been fairly pleased with the total, and knowing the fragility of the Eagles batting line-up, knew they were only a few key wickets from victory.

Things seemed to go to plan for the home side as they were able to extract the keys to Yarra Junction’s resistance with little expense, however a guiding knock of 50 from Matt Robinson steered the Eagles to victory. With handy partnerships across the whole innings, the visitors were able to maintain the required run rate, and enough wickets in hand, to polish off the victory in the 39th over by two wickets.

The victory was vital to Yarra Junction’s season, as a loss would’ve put them in danger of slipping behind the pack. Instead, they now find themselves in a big clash against Mount Evelyn where a win will see them back inside the top four.

AFTER THE first day of Round 10, the Monbulk 1sts and 3rds are in strong positions against Knox Gardens. Matty Neal collected his best figures in the 1sts with 4/18. The 2nds have a big run chase next weekend and the 4ths had a bye.

Most of the junior sides were also back for 2015 with the U17s and U15s both in tight contests. Thirties to Aaron Gillard and Daniel Cleary in the 17s and Aussie Richardson in 15s. The U13s had a terrific team win against UFTG. Special mentions to Campbell Dennison who took 3/3 and made 15 not out and to Sage Farmer who took three great catches and made 14. The two U11 teams also played each other on Friday night in a very enthusiastic and competitive match.

Next Friday night (23 January) the U10s resume along with our Milo in2Cricket program.

Congratulations to the five boys that represented the FTGDCA during the rep carnival last week. They all played very well and did themselves and the club proud. Well done to Daniel Cleary, James Fenby, Travis Wills (U16s), Austin Richardson (U14s) and Ben Grimes (U12s).

Neal web traps Falcons

By STEVE BROWN FTGDCA FOURTH-PLACED Knox Gardens is in danger of dropping a game against Monbulk (ninth) when they journeyed up the hill for day one of round 10 Reeves Shield action at the weekend.

Batting first, The Falcons could only muster 122 as spinner Matthew Neal took 4/18, his best figures of the season.

Once again only Shannon Small hung around with the bat with 42.

In reply, Monbulk are 3/55 and need to dig in for the first hour next week.

Knoxfield (seventh) took it up to The Basin when they set the table leaders 243 in their best batting performance of the season.

Mitchell Perry, 15, scored 57 in only his fourth first X1 game, combining well with the experienced Trentin Scholfield, also 57 to post what could be a winning total.

Shane Underhill took four wickets for the Bears who will be looking to get back on the winners list after dropping their first game last round.

Upwey Tecoma, sitting outside the four only on percentage, managed 221 against third-placed Johnson Park.

Nick Whitty (37) and Steve Moore (32) got starts, but it was Jake Evans who stole the show with 80 before running out of partners.

Eildon Park’s batting was up to scratch with 9/258 against Ferntree Gully.

Adrian Baltruschaitis (83), Nathan Hicks (65) and prolific run scorer Cody Morris (49) did the job required to bring home another win.

Upper Gully, facing possibly their most important game of the season, is

Personal bests clocked YARRA Ranges Athletics members took part in the group’s annual Centre Multi-Day last weekend, where young athletes competed in a number of events to rack up points.

With each of the athletes’ performances generating points towards a total, the competition was fierce and a number of the competitors smashed their personal best-times and clocked in with quick times.

Though the group may have been small due to the school holidays, the enthusiasm and noise of the athletes made the 17 January competition sound like a full house.

Parent helpers took part in running the event, which is a useful lead-up to the state-wide multi competitions, which will be held on the weekend of 31 January.
