Probe into man’s death in Bayles THE Bayles community is in shock after a man’s body was found at a two storey house on KooweerupLongwarry Road about 2.30pm on Monday, near the Bayles Wildlife Shelter. The Homicide Squad said the cause of the man’s death has yet to be determined. A next door neighbour said the victim, believed to be in his 70s, was a quiet man who kept to himself. “I only ever saw him when he was working on his boat, mowing his grass or down the street,” he said. “I’m hoping it’s not a robbery gone wrong, although we’ve had no problems with crime in the area.” Neither of the neighbours had seen any suspicious activity on the property. DAY and night drug deals in the Cardinia Grove Estate has left a Pakenham mother of four fearful for her family’s safety. The mother, who wished to remain anonymous, said she was reluctant to let her children, aged between 15 and four, play outside due to deals occurring in broad daylight in front of her home.
She contacted the Pakenham Gazette just before Christmas out of sheer frustration and often intimidation, as a property in Elderberry Way had become a haven for drug activity over the past six months. “One time two males in their 20s sat parked outside my home for 35 to 40 minutes,” she said. “They only left after my husband came home from work and stared them down.

Tigers put on show
Stealing spree thwarted
By ANEEKA SIMONIS RICHMOND Football Club will put on a show for Cardinia Shire residents as they take to a Pakenham reserve for a highly anticipated training session ahead of the Australia Day long weekend. The Tigers will train at Toomuc Recreation Reserve from 4.30pm on Friday 23 January which will be followed by a free kids’ football clinic led by the Richmond players. Diehard fans will also have a chance of meeting their favourite players after their twilight training session. The event is expected to draw a massive crowd that will build on the numbers that swarmed the team’s training session at Holm Park Reserve in Beaconsfield last year. In addition to watching the team train, kids and families can enjoy a range of other activities including inflatables, face-painting, giveaways and prizes to be won. The Parklea-supported event will provide food and drinks for purchase as well as onsite parking, merchandise and membership offers.
FOUR youths were caught red-handed during a botched stealing spree in Pakenham over the weekend. An 11-year-old Pakenham boy was the youngest of the four netted by police for stealing from Target, Coles, Woolworths, Big W and Caltex in Main Street on Saturday 11 January. A 20-year-old Pakenham woman, along with two men aged 18 and 22 from St Kilda, were charged on bail while the 11-year-old was issued with a caution and ordered to take part in youth diversion programs. “Once kids start in a cycle of crime, they continue to offend. We try to intervene as soon as possible to help prevent them continuing down that path,” Pakenham Senior Sergeant Nathan Prowd said.

OVERALL crime dropped in the Pakenham area in the lead-up to Christmas. Pakenham police Acting Sergeant Ryan Murnane reported at a Neighbourhood Watch Cardinia meeting on 18 December that crime reports had dropped from 71 to 56 over the past month. Theft of motor vehicles (14 down from 20) and property damage (10 down from 15) underpinned the drop in crime. However, burglaries (16 up from 11), general thefts (eight up from four) and shop steals (five up from two) all increased. There was also a small increase in theft of motor vehicles.

Driver jailed after crashing into train By CASEY NEILL A TRUCK driver will spend up to five years in jail over a fatal Dandenong South train crash. Supreme Court of Victoria Justice Lex Lasry on 18 December sentenced Melville Bollen, 71, to five years in jail, with a minimum two years and six months, over the 3 November 2012 incident at Abbotts Road. Bollen, formerly of Narre Warren North, drove his semi-trailer through lowered boom gates and
collided with the six-carriage Cranbourne-bound train about 11.40am. Cranbourne West man David Cron, 43, died from head and chest injuries at the scene and four other passengers were injured. Train driver Trevor King suffered a brain injury and fractures to his ribs, hands and feet. Victim impact statements indicated that other passengers now feared using public transport and had increased anxiety about bad things happening to them or their family, flashbacks and nightmares.
Bollen pleaded guilty to culpable driving and multiple charges of negligently causing serious injury. He’d been a professional driver for almost 50 years and was not speeding at the time of the crash. “For the whole of your working life, your attitude to your driving has been responsible,” Justice Lasry said. Witnesses said Bollen was looking downwards as he approached the crossing, looked up and realised the situation at the last moment, and tried to brake and steer around the

boom gates. “The fact that you were distracted for as long as 19 seconds naturally makes this a very serious offence,” Justice Lasry said. “It is certain you were not paying anywhere near the attention to your driving that you should have been.” He said he was confident that Bollen would “live a law-abiding life once you are released”. Justice Lasry also cancelled his licence and disqualified him from obtaining a licence for five years.

Scare tactics WHY doesn’t it surprise me to read in the media that we might be in for a long, local feud. Instead of working together and looking after the ratepayers, they resort to fear mongering such as “playing catch up from the Kennett era, and affecting the ability of many councils to provide services”. What are they scared of? I would like more transparency for starters. How are the councillors’ wages and
perks justified? At the last state election we had three City of Casey councilors running but not a word about where the money for their campaign came from. Was it political donations or from ratepayers? Or is this just an excuse to sell off the local assets as well? We have already lost everything else to the private sector. Florin Bordei, Hampton Park.

Labor win tick By LACHLAN MOORHEAD CASEY is among the seven south-eastern councils which have welcomed the arrival of the new Victorian Government, with Labor having made a string of election promises for the municipality. South East Melbourne (SEM) Chair and City of Frankston Mayor Sandra Mayer said her council coalition had been monitoring and assessing Labor’s election pledges against regional priorities during the election campaign and was pleased with the initial results. “We are encouraged by the fact that many of the commitments made are consistent with our regional priorities and we look forward to sitting down with the new government to discuss exactly how and when
each promise will be delivered,” she said. Labor’s election promises regarding the City of Casey include the removal of the Hallam and Berwick railway crossings, for which funding has already been confirmed, and a $5 million upgrade of Hampton Park Primary School. The State Government has also pledged to install public toilets at Hallam station, and promised a $175 million duplication of Thompsons Road, in addition to a $106 million upgrade of Casey Hospital. “We’ll also be seeking to learn more about how SEM communities will benefit from broader state-wide commitments including the Back to Work program, aimed at creating 100,000 jobs and the plan for Fairer, Safer Housing,” Ms Mayer said.
She also said the southeast councils were in the final stages of developing their first regional plan and would be seeking commitments from regional MPs during the coming months. “While we are grateful for all of these important announcements, there is much more to be done to ensure that we are ready to respond to the long-term challenges and opportunities our region is expected to face,” Ms Mayer said. “These include creating and attracting more local jobs to respond to increasing population growth, building the necessary infrastructure to accommodate growing communities, developing our freight and logistics network to support economic growth and improving public transport.”

Cruelty to bird By LACHLAN MOORHEAD A 19-YEAR-OLD from Narre Warren was charged on summons last month after a bird was shot with an arrow at Wilson’s Promontory. The teenager was charged with aggravated cruelty following the incident in which the bird was shot at Shallow Inlet, in Wilson Promontory National Park, on Sunday 28 December. The bird has still not been located by authorities.
Wildlife Victoria spokeswoman Amy Amato said there had been an increase over summer of animals being impaled by objects - many of which appeared intentional. “We’re getting lots of calls about this sort of thing,” she said. “It’s been a reoccurrence over the last month or so, this holiday period we’ve seen an increase in these types of incidents. “Whether people are just on
holidays and it’s turning into this, I don’t know.” Ms Amato said the recently recorded incidents included the use of items such as “spear-like devices” and kebab skewers. “It’s absolutely despicable, it’s disgusting what people can do to an innocent animal,” Ms Amato said. Anyone with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or Wildlife Victoria on 1300 094 535.
Major track upgrade for Flack Reserve CASEY Council last month officially began its $2 million redevelopment of the Edwin Flack Reserve athletics track. It came as the City of Casey also opened the upgraded Clyde Recreation Reserve pavilion in December, following the completion of a $280,000 renovation. Casey Council held a special ceremony at the end of last year to mark the turning of the first sod for the works
on Edwin Flack Reserve in Berwick. “Council is committed to ensuring there are quality sport and leisure opportunities available to Casey residents,” he said. “These two projects are examples of how council is delivering the best sporting facilities that encourage the Casey community to be healthy and engaged in physical activity.”
The improvements at Clyde Recreation Reserve included an expanded canteen and renovated change rooms, umpires’ room and scorers’ room. The Berwick athletics track re-development will include renovations of the javelin run-up area, the long and triple jump run-up areas, and the high jump area. The existing drainage will also be upgraded.

Cr Crestani announced last Tuesday that she would be withdrawing her complaints against City of Casey Mayor Mick Morland and CEO Mike Tyler that she had lodged with both the Commission and the Councillor Code of Conduct Panel. Cr Crestani demanded last year that Casey Mayor Mick Morland resign from his position after she was prevented from raising an amendment to stop the council from promoting same-sex relationships. Cr Crestani has now said she would be withdrawing the complaints after a
“great deal of soul searching” and would no longer seek the mayor’s resignation. “I have come to realise what I had set out to achieve in representing the public interest has since veered from the path that I feel is beneficial to all the parties involved,” she said. “My heart is to work in conjunction with my colleagues to achieve greater outcomes for our residents.” Cr Crestani’s fellow Four Oaks Ward councillor Rafal Kaplon came out publicly as gay in November after she attempted to raise the motion to stop the City of Casey promoting awareness of different sexual orientations. Cr Crestani’s motion sought to stop the council from issuing media releases and remove signs concerning sexual ori-
entation or the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) community. Cr Crestani, who was a candidate for the Rise Up Australia Party (RUAP) in the Victorian election, also sought to abolish the council’s LGBTI diversity training program. Cr Crestani was removed from her role on a number of council committees after last year’s acrimony. Cr Morland, who met with her last Wednesday, said it would be a whole council decision as to whether Ms Crestani was ever re-admitted onto the committees. The first ordinary council meeting for 2015 will take place on Tuesday 20 January.

Students again on uni honours board By LACHLAN MOORHEAD A CRANBOURNE high school has won a prestigious university competition for the second year in a row. Cranbourne East Secondary College was crowned the winner of the 2014 Monash University Casey Challenge event in December, having also claimed the honours in 2013. Now in its second year, the challenge provides Year 9 and 10 students from across Casey with the opportunity to experience university life by attending lectures, touring the grounds and working on assignments at Monash’s Berwick campus. This year more than 80 students took part in the initiative from schools including Alkira, Cranbourne East, Narre Warren South P-12 and Maranatha Secondary Colleges. Mayor Mick Morland congratulated the Cranbourne East Secondary College students who claimed the top prize for their assignment project. “The judges commended Cranbourne East for their creativity, in-depth research and great teamwork to produce a
great assignment,” he said. “The winning students were presented with gift cards and a perpetual cup, which will reside with the winning school for the next year.” Cr Morland said the awards ceremony was held to celebrate the challenge program’s success. “In conjunction with Monash University, the City of Casey designed this program to provide further opportunities for young people to explore pathways into tertiary education,” he said. “Students in this region have significantly lower levels of tertiary education than greater Melbourne and this project was designed to expose students to what university would be like in the hope of raising their aspiration levels. “This program is especially beneficial for students who may not have considered university as an option for them and now see it as a future goal.” The challenge ran for six weeks and students were able to experience university life with the help of tertiary students.
Safety fears close bridge A TREACHEROUS bridge in Narre Warren which has been judged too dangerous to drive on has been temporarily closed. The City of Casey has closed the Troups Creek bridge crossing at Fox Road in Narre Warren North, between Leech Court and Roy Close, in the interest of community safety. It will remain closed until further notice. Casey Mayor Mick Morland said the bridge had been shut as a “precaution to motorists” following the “recent deterioration of the road and bridge”. “Council has inspected the bridge and significant repairs are required,” he said. “As a result, the bridge crossing will need to remain closed until the necessary works are complete, to ensure public safety. “Rectification works are still at the design stage and it is too early to advise when the road will re-open.” Mayor Morland said the council will estimate a completion timeframe for the bridge once the new design had been finalised. “While council is working to re-open the road as soon as possible, the safety of road users remains council’s number one priority,” he said. “We apologise for any inconvenience that may be caused and we will continue to keep you updated on the progress of these works and how long the road will be closed.” For further information, contact the City of Casey Customer Service on 9705 5200.
Four Oaks Ward Cr Rafal Kaplon congratulated the winning team of the Monash University Casey Challenge, from left, Kate, Melissa, Bailey and Heather from Cranbourne East Secondary College.

KNOW YOUR GRASSFIRE RISK THIS SUMMER If you live near open grassland, parks, paddocks or reserves, you could be impacted by grassfire.
IT’S UP TO YOU TO KNOW WHAT TO DO IF A FIRE STARTS. DO YOU LIVE ONE OR TWO STREETS AWAY FROM GRASSLAND? Stay inside your home – grassfires are unlikely to spread past the first row of houses Keep the roads clear so emergency services can respond
DO YOU LIVE ON A FENCELINE NEXT TO GRASSLAND? If a fire starts, quickly move one or two streets away from the fenceline or park boundary Act early, even if you haven’t received a warning Keep the roads clear so emergency services can respond
Remember, it’s up to you to monitor weather conditions and warnings. Always keep an eye on the conditions outside - you may be aware of a fire before emergency services. If you see smoke or flames, call Triple Zero (000).

Great prize on route EYE-CATCHING buses have been in and around Berwick and Narre Warren over the past three months showcasing the latest on offer at Barry Bourke Holden. They definitely stood out and for one lucky person, seeing that bus was the best thing that could happen. Back in September Barry Bourke announced the start of its exclusive campaign where customers who purchased a new or demo Holden between 22 September and 22 December would go into the draw to win $5000 cash. On 23 December the prize was drawn at the Barry Bourke Holden showroom in Berwick, just in time for Christmas and the winner was announced - the very lucky Ellyse Noy from Upper Beaconsfield. Ellyse, a 20-year-old animal and veterinary bio-science university student accepted the prize, which was handed over by Barry Bourke Motors friend Brian Lake on 23 December. “I have a HECS debt to pay off so this amazing prize will help me immensely, thank you so much Barry Bourke!” Ellyse said. She purchased a new Holden Trax LS from Barry Bourke Holden in No-
vember and was thrilled when she received the phone call. Ellyse saw the buses around town and was in the market for a new vehicle so she logged onto the Barry Bourke website to find out more about the offer, and gave Barry Bourke Holden the first opportunity to give her a great deal. That was the best move she could make. Noy family members are long-term repeat customers of Barry Bourke Holden and now have an even bigger reason to stick around. This is the first campaign of its kind that Barry Bourke Motors has run and with such huge success. New Vehicle Sales Manager Andrew Saad was thrilled at the response of the campaign, and to see the prize go to such a worthy winner. “It’s great to see such a genuine, excited winner and to know this will help her further her career towards such a great cause is even better,” he said. Stay up to date and be notified of upcoming offers or competitions like this by liking Barry Bourke Holden on Facebook, www.facebook.com/barrybourkeholden.

A family orientated club providing Calisthenic Excellence
Racing fans can test their skills on the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit in some of the fastest karts available.
Push bike ride days are back for summer “This has proved very popular over previous school holidays with a wide range of people and groups taking advantage of a unique experience,” Mr Cameron said. “We had family groups, older riders, serious riders, fitness fanatics and riding clubs. The track can accommodate all these groups together because it is extremely safe with no cars, it’s wide enough for passing and challenging for the fitness fanatics because of its sweeping straights and long demanding undulations. You won’t break any lap records on the 4.5 kilometre circuit however you will enjoy the safest and most picturesque location to ride your push bike on Phillip Island,” he said. The next ride is on Thursday 15 January from 6pm to 8pm. There is no need to book, just turn up 30 minutes prior to the session at the visitors centre to purchase a ticket with your own bike and helmet. All new history of motorsport After a complete renovation, the History of Motorsport showcases the dawn of motorsport on Phillip Island commencing with the very first Australian Grand Prix in 1928 through to present day racing. The display has many articles, images and racing vehicles that
will capture your imagination. All new slot cars As part of the renovation process, the GP slot cars were also redeveloped and now provide the best fun for all ages. Race your family or your mates and experience the fun on Australia’s largest four-lane GP slot car track. All new race simulators Test your skills or challenge your mates to a simulated race on the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit. Go flat out down Gardner Straight, through ultra-fast Doohan Corner, slide through Stoner, thread your way through Siberia and slipstream up the back straight. Watch out for the hairpin at the bottom of Lukey heights. Who will get the bragging rights? Super-Fast Hot Laps For the adrenalin junkies how about three heart pumping “Hot Laps” in a race prepared vehicle. Our resident race car driver will get your heart started with lift off and road hugging turns that defy gravity as you “white knuckle” it and carve an impression on the rugged cliffs surrounded by sapphire seas. Guided circuit tours Follow in the footsteps of racing superstars on a daily guided circuit tour featuring a MotoGP sound simulation and access to exclusive and restricted areas such as
the control tower, media centre, pit roof, and of course that hero photo opportunity on the winner’s podium. Wander into the rich past the circuit has to offer. Tranquil water gardens, inspired by the former race car driver and previous owner of the circuit Len Lukey lead you through to the viewing mound capturing some of the most unique and invigorating panoramic views of the circuit and Bass Strait. THERE have been a lot of new and exciting changes and improvements to the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit lately so it’s time to revisit and rediscover what’s new. Now more than ever it’s a destination for the whole family with many hours of entertainment and enjoyment on offer. All new single and tandem karts Karting at Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit has blasted through the rev limiter for both speed and fun with 27 all new French made SODI RT8 karts. Circuit managing director Fergus Cameron searched worldwide to source the best karts and settled on the highly regarded SODI Racing Company in Nantes in France. “These are no ordinary karts. Each has a price tag in excess of $8000. SODI are the Ferrari of the karting world, and we went with them to ensure our fans enjoyed the best karting experience possible,” Mr Cameron said. “In addition to the single karts we have just taken delivery of nine tandem karts. RENOVATE OR RELOCATE HAS ITS PROS AND CONS WHEN your kids are demanding their own bedrooms, that old-fashioned kitchen is getting on your nerves or your house needs a major overhaul, a difficult decision awaits - to renovate or relocate. Renovating an existing home offers the chance to create the house you want in the location you know and like. It avoids upheavals such as changing children’s schools or settling into a new community. But the difficulties are obvious - the disruption, the need to temporarily rent or live in a building site, the expense and potential for cost overruns, the work involved in planning
permissions, design and project management. Buying a new home may seem easier but it brings its own challenges, not least of which is finding the ideal home in your preferred location. As well, it entails selling your existing home for the right price and co-ordinating moving from one to the other, preferably without renting in the interim. Start by asking yourself what you want most - is it to stay in your current location and to to live in a home which meets all your requirements and fulfils the wish list you have been compiling for all those years?
DISPLAY & LAND
If the answer is yes, ask yourself whether all the downsides of a major renovation - from potentially months with no kitchen and/or bathroom to choosing everything from light fittings to drawer handles - are worth it to achieve your location and dream home goals. If you decide that the end result is worth it, start interviewing architects to obtain costs for your renovation and ensure that what you want is achievable with the funds you have. Thoroughly analyse your finances, including meeting with your bank manager and accountant, to ensure you can raise
those funds, plus contingency. It is also time to talk to a local real estate agent to ensure you will not be overcapitalising your home. If the cost of your renovation will take the amount spent on your home above the ceiling price for homes in your area, it may be time to rethink. Even if you plan to stay long term, assuming you will eventually be in profit, overcapitalising is not a good idea. Sometimes selling unexpectedly is necessary and if the house is overcapitalised, you may lose money. If you think the upheaval of a renovation is not justified, or you are undecided about it, an estate agent can help.

Step up to our award winning Milan, voted HIA’s Best Display Home 2014.* The Milan 29 from our Aspire range has just won the 2014 HIA Victorian division Best Display Home between $250,001 – 300,000. It’s an architect designed home ofering afordable luxury, space and light and a range of innovative features. The sun court, for instance, actually increases the usable interior space and floods the living areas with light. Or as the judges said: “A very open home that gives the impression it is bigger than it actually is.
“Excellent workmanship, attention to detail and a feeling of spaciousness.” – HIA Judges
You can sense the diference immediately with generously proportioned spaces that flow together naturally to create vistas and extended views with picture windows usually only found in more expensive homes. The high level of luxury inclusions also caught the eye of the judges who said the Caesarstone benches, Franke sinks and Smeg appliances “represent value for money”. The overall style and elegance of this four bedroom home is typified by the raised ceiling above the dining area. Visit the Milan today – and judge for yourself.

A passion for dance THE Lind-Elle School of Dance has been operating in Narre Warren for over 17 years and is looking forward to another fantastic year in 2015. The school’s familyfriendly location in a residential area has three fully equipped dance studios complete with heating and airconditioning and off-street parking. Outside there is an enclosed play area and inside,
two lounge areas serve as homework or chill out zones for students between classes, as well as waiting areas for parents. Lind-Elle’s dedicated and passionate teachers are experts in their fields. A staff of experienced, professional teachers conduct classes in jazz, ballet, hip-hop, contemporary, tap, street tap, pointe and acrobatics. Optional ATOD exams are a great way to ensure a
student’s dancing education reaches its potential. Girls and boys can start from as young as 2.5 years and age is limitless. Beginners are welcome at any age - it’s never too late to start dancing - and popular adult classes attest to this. Class sizes are capped to ensure each student benefits from individual attention. Lind-Elle currently has limited vacancies in their highly successful competi-
tion troupes. If you are looking to push your dancing skills to the next level and experience additional performance opportunities, these fast paced classes are for you. Whether dancing is a hobby or a future career, LindElle can cater to all needs. Come and meet the team on the open days - Sunday 18 January, from 1pm to 3pm, or Wednesday 21 January, from 5pm to 7.30pm - or give them a call on 8790 2733 to arrange a studio tour.
Sabrina Keller and her teammates from the under 16 competition troupe leave the audience spellbound with their theatrical dance, abracadabra.

Ex-Eagle wants to love it By DAVID NAGEL
Former West Coast Eagle Ashley Smith will play for the Berwick Football Club in the inaugural South East Football League season in 2015. 133021 Picture: WEST COAST EAGLES
DELISTED West Coast Eagle Ash Smith is simply looking forward to enjoying his footy again after signing with the Berwick Football Club for 2015. A Berwick junior from age 12, the 24-year-old midfielder has returned home after six years with the Eagles where he played 45 games before being delisted at the end of the 2014 season. Smith said he was excited about the move home and the opportunity to play footy again without coping with the relentless pressure associated with being an AFL player. “I’m pretty excited about going back to Berwick to be honest,” the 36 draft pick in the 2008 National Draft said.
“For me now, after being in the AFL system for quite a few years it’s about fun and just getting back to enjoying my footy again. To play with blokes like Madi Andrews, who I’ve played with in the past, and to play against a few other blokes that I know from around the area is going to be very enjoyable.” Smith said he had no ambition to get back into the cut and thrust of AFL football and would instead concentrate on helping the Wickers improve on last year’s fourth placing. “No not really, I just think people don’t understand how much you go through and how demanding it is to be an AFL player these days,” he said. “I trained with Richmond in the
off-season and I could have gone and played at VFL level, but I’ll be 25 by the next draft and there are no guarantees at that age. This wasn’t always in the plan, but in the end it just felt right to come back. Bruce Andrews approached me shortly after I was delisted and it just seemed like the perfect fit. “Berwick’s a club that has always been around the mark but just can’t quite get across the line. They’re all good guys at the club and at the age where we should really be setting our sights high.” The former Dandenong Stingray said he was also looking forward to working with senior coach Rhys Nisbet to develop the club’s core group of youngsters. “I’ve only spoken with Rhys
a couple of times but from that I can already tell he’s very keen, very dedicated and very enthusiastic about getting the best out of the group, particularly the younger players,” he said. “I’m looking forward to that development side of things as well, and teaching the young blokes what’s required and how hard you have to train if you want to get the best out of yourself. “There are some things you just can’t learn or appreciate until you’ve been at an AFL club and I’m Iooking forward to passing some of those things on to the youngsters.” Ash’s brother Aaron, who Ash describes as a really talented player who hasn’t played for a while, will also join the club.

John Wise, pictured centre with Australian cricketer Meg Lanning, left, and Gabrielle Williams MP, right, was celebrated by Cricket Victoria as part of the Volunteer Recognition Breakfast at the MCG last month. 132858 Picture: CRICKET VICTORIA
Wise words bring award By JARROD POTTER LOVE of cricket runs deeply within John Wise. Wise, 53, from Berwick Springs is virtually inseparable from the cricket ovals around the state each summer and throws himself into any role to help his beloved clubs Berwick Springs and formerly Salesian Old Boys - become stronger. This passion for chipping in and ensuring the next generation flourishes earned him Cricket Victoria recognition as one of 20 volunteers at the Boxing Day Test for his contributions to the summer sport. “It’s a huge honour - you don’t do it for the recognition or for an award like that,” Wise said. “For me I’ve got a lot out of cricket - playing at two clubs Salesian Old Boys and Berwick Springs - and in 40-odd years involvement in club cricket I’ve just enjoyed every minute of it. “To be recognised is a big thrill and I was just blown away - I just love the involvement in the game, love being around the club and I think it’s good for young people to be involved in the club environment.” No matter where he’s gone in life, since 12 years old, Wise has always been drawn a cricket club nearby and wouldn’t have it any other way. He played most of his career
at Salesian Old Boys Cricket Club in Chadstone but the bowling all-rounder shifted to Berwick Springs and signed up with the Titans soon after. After 36 years at Salesian Old Boys, the shift to Berwick Springs has been just as joyous for the Wise family - his wife Anne Maree, son Sam and daughter Antonia. As all great volunteers usually are, the long-time cricket administrator/coach/player is particularly humble about his achievements, but there are a lot of stellar achievements on his resume. “I play a small part in Berwick Springs,” Wise said. “There are a lot of great people in Berwick Springs and I was fortunate enough to receive the award and I’m absolutely stoked - it’s great to have this recognition across two clubs I hold dearly. “Both clubs are fantastic and I’ve made some great friendships through cricket and that’s one thing the young people will definitely get out of team sport as those friendships stay for life.” Wise will look back fondly on his role helping Berwick Springs receive a turf wicket upgrade to Berwick Springs Reserve, allowing the Titans for the first time in 2015/16 to compete in the Dandenong Dis-
trict Cricket Association’s turf divisions. Another proud achievement in his coaching career was guiding Hawthorn-Monash Women’s Cricket Club to a premiership and also one for Berwick Springs - the club’s first flag - in 2011/12. He also thinks cultivating the next generation of Titans talent is just as important for the departing president. “My main goal - the goal with the club - would be to get a turf wicket put in the reserve,” Wise said. “That was my mission and to make sure we got that turf wicket and with a lot of assistance from the City of Casey they’ve made a dream of the club come true. “We’ll have a turf wicket to play on next year and that will help keep our kids at the club and that’s what I want to see.” He had to step aside from the Berwick Springs CC presidency to devote more time to his family and his business Universal Cleaning Group - but rest assured he will never be far away from the sport he loves. Wise can be found most weekends in the blue and green Titan colours or out in the centre wearing the whites as he fills in wherever he can in the Berwick Springs’ D, E or F Grade teams.

THE Lang Lang Show is on Saturday 17 January. There will be a full program of horse events including showjumping, flat riding, Shetland ponies, the majestic Clydesdales, miniature ponies and stockhorses just to name a few, with pre-entry for all horse events, except the fun ring. The Beef Cattle Spectacular is always a great success and well worth a look. There is a poultry competition and the dog show is always well attended, with many breeds competing for the title of champion. The pavilion will once again be filled with art, photography, craft, cookery and produce. The Lang Lang Young Personality competition is on again this year. It is open to girls and boys aged three to 16,. It’s free to enter, so come along on the day and maybe win a prize. There will be a vegetable stall laden with fresh produce donated straight from the local market gardens with all proceeds going to the Kooweerup Hospital Ladies Auxiliary. As an added incentive to bring the kids along, this year there will be a free magic show by Scott Stunz. Scott will also be roaming around between shows and handing out balloon sculptures. He entertains adults and children and should be lots of fun! There will be face painting, an animal nursery, pony rides, showbags and assorted rides, among other things, to keep the kids entertained. One lucky boy or girl will win a BMX bike and helmet in the lucky gate prize. Every child will get a free ticket to the draw but they must be present at the draw at 2pm to collect the prize. With something for everyone, from showbags to showjumping, the Lang Lang Show will be held at the Lang Lang Showgrounds in Westernport Road, Lang Lang. For more information visit www.langlangshow.org or phone Cheryl Berry on 5997 5006.

Battle win warms the hearts By LACHLAN MOORHEAD A CASEY-based band has a bright future, if winning the Battle of the Bands is anything to go by. The Evercold turned up the heat when it competed in the regional FReeZA Push Start Battle of the Bands last month, winning the competition for the City of Casey held at the Cranbourne Public Hall. The Evercold competed against five other bands from a range of municipalities, including Stridor which represented the City of Kingston, Bloomfield which represented the City of Stonnington, Melanie Grace which represented the Frankston City Council, Beneath the Lies which represented the Bayside City Council, and Manor which represented the City of Greater Dandenong. In addition to receiving first place in the competition, The Evercold also took out the Audience Choice award while Bloomfield came second and Stridor was third. Casey Mayor Mick Morland commended The
Evercold for taking out the top prize, noting that it had made the City of Casey very proud. “All of the bands were very talented and entertained the crowd, making it hard for the judging panel to pick the winners,” he said. “It was great to see a local band win and showcase the amazing talent we have here in Casey. “Congratulations to all competitors on their performances and I wish them all the best of luck with their future successes - I’m sure they will all go on to have great careers in the music industry. The Evercold will now go on to represent Casey and the Southern Metropolitan Region at the FReeZA Push Start State Grand Final, which will be held at Moomba on Saturday 7 March. For more information on FReeZA events in Casey, contact City of Casey Customer Service on 9705 5200 or visit www.casey.vic.gov.au/ youth.
The Evercold is made up of band members Chris, Jake, Jamal and Josh.

Cricket champion clinic TWO young and promising Casey cricketers were given the chance of a lifetime when they had a chance to meet former Australian champion Matthew Hayden last month. The opportunity was provided by McDonald’s which, in December, held its Mac Pack Cricket Super Clinic in Melbourne, a junior sporting initiative that aims to encourage children to lead a healthy lifestyle through sport. Promising junior cricketers Lachlan Rechsteiner and Aaryamann Sikri from Cranbourne and Rohan Menon from Lynbrook had the chance to meet Australian cricketing great Matthew Hayden at the clinic. McDonald’s Cranbourne North licensee Ian Seal said the clinic was a great opportunity for the kids. “The Mac Pack Cricket Super clinic is a great way to engage kids with cricket and encourage them to lead an active and healthy lifestyle through sport,” he said. Children between six and 12 were able to win a place at the competition.

Mazda don’t just make great cars. We make customers excited about possibilities. When people come into one of our Dealerships, they are taken on a journey of imagination that not only inspires them, but also connects them with innovative design and technology. And while the cars are the heroes of the story, great sales people play a critical role in helping customers to achieve their dreams.
And that’s precisely why we need you on our Dealer team. When you join the Mazda Dealer network, you’re becoming part of one of the most successful professional Dealer networks in Australia. And there could be no better time to join. Our new SKYACTIV range of vehicles are class leaders in their segments and provide you with a great story to tell. It goes without saying you have a passion for sales – ideally automotive sales. But it’s also vital that you have innate communication talents that showcase your genuine personality. You understand the flexibility required working in the automotive industry.

Coach laps up challenge By JARROD POTTER A DECADE in to his time as Casey TigerSharks Swimming Club’s head coach Ben Hiddlestone is still striving to reach the next level and push the club even further. Arriving at the City of Casey based swimming club in December 2004, Hiddlestone from Berwick has become a mainstay in Victorian swimming circles ever since and helped cultivate one of the strongest programs in the state. He knows a thing or two about coaching longevity having learned the craft under his mentor Miami Swimming Club’s (Queensland) coach Denis Cotterell who is about to notch his 40th year at the club. From when he started, a club without much state level success let alone international representation, the TigerSharks have blossomed under Hiddlestone’s guidance to now boasts 170 swimmers in its midst from six-yearolds through to Olympic and Commonwealth Games representatives. Hiddlestone was pleased to accomplish the milestone and see the club develop in both results and membership through the past decade. “It was really good - it was around December (10 year anniversary) I think it was so just a couple of weeks ago,” Hiddlestone said. “It’s been great journey, I suppose, and I did feel it was a big milestone and it was a big deal just personally and internally that you stay somewhere for 10 years. “You also have some results and seeing swimmers grow and your club going through issues and you survive those, so it has a bit of an effect at the
Ben Hiddlestone, centre, pictured here with Josh Beaver, left, and Matson Lawson recently celebrated 10 years as Casey TigerSharks swimming head coach. Picture: SUPPLIED end of it.” The three defining moments that stand out to the TigerSharks coach across his time at the helm have been Matson Lawson earning a place on the London 2012 Olympic Games
team - the first TigerShark to make an international senior team - Josh Beaver earning three medals at last year’s Commonwealth Games and the creation of the Casey RACE swimming pool and the effect it is having on the Cranbourne area and its swimmers.
“Putting Matson on the Olympic team - that was a big deal for me as a coach,” Hiddlestone said. “The second one was Beaver’s results at the Commonwealth Games his three medals - as he was one of the
only kids that were at the club when I got there 10 years ago. “Then the new pool at Casey RACE - I got there when the old Cranbourne pool next to the racetrack was still going and they built Casey ARC then maybe thinking about building the pool in Cranbourne. “Getting that up and running three or four years ago that has really changed the club as well.” The growth of the club has enabled Hiddlestone to stay in the suburbs and not pursue opportunities at one of the inner city clubs and create a program the metropolitan teams would envy. “As coaches grow, if the Casey TigerSharks didn’t have the lane space for me to have an elite program, I probably would have moved into one of the city clubs,” Hiddlestone said. “But it just so happens that the work that I’ve done and the club has done has enabled the club to grow at the same rate and can offer a little kiddies program and a big, elite program which allows me to stay and grow here as well.” The future for Hiddlestone is to keep pushing the next generation of Australian elite swimmers through and hopefully generate enough international success to enable the Casey TigerSharks to become a Swimming Australia Podium centre - the highest funding and support level from the national body. For now it’s back to the pool-deck for early sessions as Hiddlestone and the TigerSharks prepare for the Swimming Victoria Open Championships which are to be held at MSAC from 16 to 18 January.

Lions pride roars again By DAVID NAGEL PAKENHAM (2/83) has closed the gap between itself and the top-four teams in the WGCA Premier Division with a crunching victory over Emerald (82) at Toomuc Reserve on Saturday. The fifth-placed Lions pushed their stuttering start to the season aside, toying with the Bombers to close within three games of third and fourth placed Merinda Park and Tooradin respectively. The Lions could hardly have been more impressive, with Russ Lehman (3/5), Shannon Mitchell (3/25) and Jack Ryan (2/22) bowling beautifully, before Chris Smith (41 not out) and Bradey Welsh (29) completed the most clinical of victories. The win sets up one of the games of the season this Saturday, where the Lions take on Merinda Park, under lights at Toomuc Reserve, in a replay of last year’s thriller that ended in a tie. Stand-in skipper Jack Anning said there was still much to look forward to for the Lions after their most impressive win for the season. “It makes for an exciting finish doesn’t it,” Anning said after Saturday’s win. “We’ve got Merinda Park, then Cardinia, which will be a really tough game, then Beaconsfield and Upper Beaconsfield and then we finish off with Kooweerup. There’s no doubt we’ve put ourselves in a tough position, but we’d back ourselves to win all of those games if we can produce our best cricket, and that’s what we need to do if we want to play finals.” Upper Beaconsfield (0/106) has produced the upset of the West Gippsland Premier Division season, crushing premiership fancy Tooradin (105) by 10 wickets at Upper Beaconsfield on Saturday. The Maroons’ eyebrow raising
WGCA
Pakenham fire-brand Jack Ryan has been in terrific form of late and continued to impress taking 2/22 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS against Emerald on Saturday. 132891 performance has kept the top-flight season alive, with Pakenham joining them as teams outside the top four still searching for a finals berth. Maroons’ skipper Chris Savage threw the new-ball to off-spinner Rob North and the momentum immediately swung the Maroons’ way. Sure, they didn’t get wickets immediately, but North (0/9 off 3), Jayden Joyce (2/24 off 6) and 15-year-old gun Chad McDonald (1/9 off 4) gave their skipper exactly what he had asked for. “It was all about not letting blokes like Huss (Tom Hussey) get away from us early,” Savage said. “We didn’t get a wicket until they were 24 but, to tell you the truth, they never looked comfortable, and I was really impressed with the way our boys bowled.” And the wickets soon came, Joyce, McDonald, Tommy Tyrrell (2/22 off 8) and Will Haines (2/14 off 7) combining to devastate the visitors, who lost 7/36 in a rare display of vulnerability. Ross Douglas
(21) and Jarred Thompson (13) did some repair work on the innings, but that was unstitched by Kyle Gibbs (3/13 off 5) who claimed the last three wickets to fall. Regular opener North (26 not out) was then joined by Tyrrell (64 not out) and they produced the most surprising century partnership of the season, pulverising the Seagulls’ attack to reverse the result of a round six drubbing. “We had a massive point to prove after what they did to us last time, just like we will have against Cardinia next week, so it was great to see the boys respond the way they did,” Savage said. “I definitely think we’re good enough to win four of our next five games.” Cardinia (154) continued its dominant season, remaining unbeaten and putting Merinda Park (128) back in its place with a 26-run win at Gunton Oval. The experienced trio of Neil Barfuss (53), Simon Parrott (29) and Ben Darose (21) led the charge with
the bat for the Bulls against a Dylan Cuthbertson (4/28) inspired Cobras’ attack. Cuthbertson (59 not out) then played a lone hand as Dean Henwood (3/10 off 8) and Barfuss (3/18 off 6) produced another near perfect display with the cherry. Reigning champs Kooweerup (127) survived a scare against the winless Beaconsfield (105) at Perc Allison Oval. Matt Davey (43) and Dananja Madushanka (18 not out) rescued the Demons from a precarious 6/40, after Shameera Weerasinghe (3/25 off 8) and Ricahrd Gault (3/21 off 5) had done the early damage. The Demons bowling is spot on at the moment, and Ron Bright Jr (3/19 off 6.3), John Bright (2/16 off 8) and Davey (2/20 off 8) shook their team free of danger to chalk up their fifth win on the trot. Weerasinghe (27) and Brett Monagle (22) almost had the Tigers across the line ... but just lacked support.
Anning cautiously optimistic in key game By DAVID NAGEL PAKENHAM’S Toomuc Reserve will light up the night sky this Saturday as the Lions host Merinda Park in a day-nighter in one of the games of the WGCA Premier Division season. The second day-night clash between the two sides has plenty to live up to after last season’s thriller ended in a tie. After a slow start, the fifthplaced Lions are charging and their eyes are firmly fixed on Merinda Park’s top-four positions and a berth in this year’s finals series. Pakenham batsman Jack Anning said it is was obviously a huge game for both sides. “Look, we can’t disguise it, it’s a massive game, we’ve pumped ourselves up for it and the chat in the rooms turned pretty quickly to the day/nighter and what it means for our season,” the right-hander said after Saturday’s win over Emerald. “It was a great spectacle last year, under lights, probably the best game of cricket I’ve played in, so hopefully we can put on another good show and get the points.” Anning said the Lions will go in confident but fully understanding of the challenge that lies ahead. “Merinda Park is very well balanced, they don’t have any superstars but a lot of blokes who just play their role for the team and that
