THE YEAR THAT WAS… Buzz off flies
DEAR Prime Minister Abbott, The City of Greater Dandenong needs a helping hand. Our city is home to Victoria’s largest concentration of refugees and asylum seekers, many of whom have fled persecution and need and deserve our compassion and protection.

Their presence has made our community a rich, multicultural tapestry but it is also putting intolerable strain on the charities, churches and generous individuals who are doing their best to meet the needs of families which are struggling to cover the basic necessities of life: food, shelter, clothing and education. Our community responds with open hearts and hands when it comes to looking after those less fortunate but there is a limit to our capacity to care. The Journal supports the City of Greater Dandenong’s

Margo raises funds for Dandenong Hospital and has been involved with Mercy Ships since 2007. “It’s a hospital ship that brings hope and healing to the forgotten poor in West Africa,” she said. “On this ship you actually see the lame walk and the blind see before your eyes.” Margo celebrated her care and empowerment centre Brand New Day’s first birthday last November.

they’re proud to talk about working here, and the vibes go to your customers, to your suppliers.” Margo recalled a “guy from the country” who asked for a job at Hilton. His dad had worked with the company so the Hartleys were happy to offer him extra support – an apartment, furniture, even sending his supervisor to get him out of bed when he failed to show up. “He now owns a signwriting business,” she said. “Simple acts of care can indeed change lives.” Margo said people might forget what someone said or did. “But people will never forget how you made them feel,” she said.

The restored 1920s home in Foster Street East is a safe haven to enjoy activities, learn new skills and meet new friends. She recalled one man who came in for help to write a resume. “He came in and said ‘thankyou for all your help, it’s just been great. I was going to commit suicide two weeks ago’,” she said. “If that’s all you’ve done, it’s been worth it.” Tom started Hilton Manufacturing in 1976 in a tin shed in
Hilton Street, Dandenong, with three employees. He worked 7am to midnight while Margo cared for young sons Todd and Mark. In June he joined the Victorian Hall of Fame Honour Roll, a nod reserved for individuals or organisations that have made an outstanding contribution to manufacturing excellence in Victoria. His Dandenong South company earned Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame induction in 2008. Hilton employs about 250 people from 25 cultures. “This company is like a family to Margo and I. You do the right thing by your people and that manifests itself,” he said. “People are proud here,

FOR Margo and Tom Hartley, last year was the culmination of decades of hard work and commitment to the community. The Endeavour Hills husband and wife team received recognition of the highest order and, for their remarkable 12 months, the Journal selected them as joint recipients of its Person of the Year title. Giving to the Dandenong community has always come naturally to Margo. In June she was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for service to the Dandenong community and to youth through the Scouting movement.
“With everything I’ve done I’ve just had so many wonderful people backing me. I could never have done these things on my own,” she said. “I think it’s a natural thing for me, when I could, to be able to give back.” She’s been a vestry member at St James’ Anglican Church in Dandenong for more than 25 years, has been attending its services for 50 and helped to organise the church’s 150th birthday celebrations, held in July last year. She met Tom through the church’s youth group and started her 20-year service to the Scouting movement when a vicar asked her to be a 9th Dandenong St James’ Scouts Cub leader at age 17. “The promise I made to do
