A COAL company’s claim that its proposed drilling operation in the Goomburra Valley will create “positive economic effects” is farcical, according to Sarah Moles, president of the Southern Downs Protection Group. Ms Moles was expected to lead a public meeting at Goomburra Hall, east of Allora, last night to inform landholders of their rights. It comes after a number of residents received a letter from APEC Coal last month outlining its “desire to commence negotiations of a compensation agreement“ for the possible drilling of one, 300m hole. Ms Moles said recent history had shown coal mining was not a meaningful or long-lasting industry, with little benefits and grave environmental costs. “The coal mining industry doesn’t give a toss about the fact that people have mortgages, they come in and get what they need then they lay people off, which is what is happening now in Glencore,” she said. “Any person who thinks that by embracing mining it is somehow going to underpin the regional economy for years to come is seriously misguided.” Affected landholder Allan Christensen has resolved to fight APEC Coal all the way. “To hell with them,” the Gladfield dairyfarmer said. “We’re not just going to let them in, that’s for sure. I’ve just received six Lock the Gate signs which I’m going to be putting up.” Continued on page 3

By ALENA HIGGINS He said councillors will always hold personal opinions on issues that come before council, and in this instance they felt the number of surveys received indicated a trend of community sentiment. “Personally, I am disappointed in the decision in that my opinion is that the dental health benefits of fluoride in drinking water outweigh the negative aspects which are purported by the anti-fluoride lobby,” Cr Blundell said.
“However, decision making within council is a process of individuals voting on issues that the majority carry. “Once those decisions are made, they become a council decision which council needs to implement.” Mayor Blundell did not respond to questions on perceived loss of public confidence following the decision and did not make assurances that a similar scenario will not happen again.

ANGRY pro-fluoride residents are coming out of the woodworks and demanding answers following council’s fluoride survey bungle. Southern Downs Regional councillors voted to discontinue water fluoridation late last month, despite receiving less than 50 per cent returns - the self-imposed target it had previously agreed on in order for the survey to be considered valid. But while the vociferous anti-fluoride lobbyists are rejoicing, residents on the other side of the ledger are feeling well and truly gypped - and not just on the health front. Warwick’s Natalie Bell said she was bitterly disappointed that young people will be denied the decay fighting benefits
of a “safe and proven program” because SDRC reneged on its promise to keep the status quo. “Council has an obligation to make logical decisions on behalf of the community and not be influenced by these people that go around scaremongering,” the retired clinical social worker said. “This is a very self-focused group of people, probably roughly my age, and I am truly sorry they have put an extra burden on busy young families who want the best for their kids.” Not only that, the “cave in” has raised doubts about council’s resolve and the way it conducts its business in general, Ms Bell said. “Must I now take promises and statements from our elected representatives at Southern Downs Council as expedient

MAYOR Peter Blundell has expressed his disappointment at the results of the Southern Downs Regional Council fluoride survey, but does not “envisage council will revisit the issue” owing to the cost factor. Cr Blundell said it was “unfortunate” to think that the pro-fluoride element of the community would have been more vocal had they thought the outcome of the survey would be disregarded. “It has been obvious for some time that fluoride in drinking water has become a very emotive issue, and the practice of adding fluoride to our water supplies have been questioned, particularly by a very vocal, and I believe, minority group of people within the community,” he said. “Council did set some very clear parameters about what constituted a valid survey, and it is unquestionable that the number of survey forms received did not meet the requirements to make it a valid survey. This was pointed out at the November General Meeting. “The opportunity for everyone to voice their opinion was very clearly pointed out, and if the overwhelming majority of people believe that fluoride should have been included in water, it was a shame we didn’t hear from them.”

Driver hits her limit By ALENA HIGGINS A FRUSTRATED Warwick local has slammed the state’s transport authority after she was caught driving 60km/h in an unmarked 50km/h zone. Ms Cohen said she was unaware the default urban speed limit in Queensland was 50km/h unless otherwise signed, and called for a renewed education campaign. “Something is seriously wrong if the majority of people in a town believe one thing and the so-called law says something else,” she said. “I was absolutely spitting chips when I received my ($151) fine and
I want to save people and families from getting fined unnecessarily,” she said of her reason for speaking out. A Transport and Main Roads spokeswoman said the department undertook “several campaigns” to create public awareness about the urban speed limit, which was implemented in South-East Queensland in March 1999 and in regional Queensland in February 2003. These included two television commercials, radio commercials, outside and transport advertising, as well as a mail drop to all households. Despite this, Ms Cohen contends she, and many of her associ-
ates, were still in the dark about the rule more than 10 years after it was introduced. “Police don’t allow ignorance as a defence, but if you don’t know what are you supposed to do?” an incredulous Ms Cohen said. Ms Cohen said Grafton Street, where she was nabbed, was a main thoroughfare and needed to be urgently reviewed. Southern Downs Regional Council director of engineering services Peter See confirmed council was proposing to undertake an assessment of speed limits generally in urban areas, which will take several months to complete.
Warwick police Acting Officer in Charge Lisa Self said it was prudent long-standing licence holders brushed up on their road rules. But Ms Cohen said it was unacceptable for the department to place the onus on drivers, especially older motorists, to find out if road rules have changed. Local streets with the 50km/h speed limit are defined as primarily providing direct property access and/or limited neighbourhood movement, the Main Roads spokeswoman said. By ALENA HIGGINS INHIBITORS to sourcing local gravel for roads will be investigated by Southern Downs Regional Council after doubts about current material were raised. It comes after council let a resolution lapse last month to engage an independent qualified specialist to investigate council’s pavement material strategy after balking at the $53,000 plus GST fee. Proterra Group was to prepare a report on the durability of gravel samples from at least 15 council roads used in a 24-month period across the region, as well as analyse existing in-house studies. Council currently utilises four gravel pits in the Warwick area to extract up to a maximum of 20,000
tonnes and supplements supplies from commercial quarries. But some councillors contend the materials used are inferior to those that were once pulled from the Stanthorpe area. “In my personal view, the gravel that is being put here on local roads is moving out to the edges, and in places it is actually quite dangerous,� Cr Vic Pennisi told the 26 November meeting. “You can’t convince me it is better (economically) if we are hauling gravel to this district as opposed to digging 300 or 400 metres away,� he added. It was the practice of the former Stanthorpe Shire Council to approach private property owners with suitable material on their land and
ask for permission to extract gravel - offering royalties or work in kind as remuneration if an agreement was reached. But this method ground to a halt after amalgamation, when it became apparent Stanthorpe and Warwick shire councils had subscribed to different interpretations of the Environmental Act. Legal advice was sought that recommended council cease the practice for fear it could be prosecuted for illegal gravel extraction. A change to the current Southern Downs Regional Council Planning Scheme would re-enable council to extract up to 5000 tonnes from private landholders, but this would give the public open slather to do the same.
SDRC director of engineering services Peter See, who strongly disagrees with claims that any of the gravel used by council is sub grade, said amending the planning scheme for council’s sake would raise questions of fairness and equality. The engineer of almost 30 years said he saw “nothing wrong� with the study undertaken by his staff, which council deferred consideration of on 30 July 2014. Mr See said council would look at acquiring two or more pits in the Stanthorpe region to ease haulage costs. Council also agreed to request a meeting with the Minister for Environment to discuss environmental requirements associated with resource extraction of gravel.

I, LIKE Chris Morison (Free Times, 11 December), am truly appalled that our Southern Downs Council has lazily given in to a loud, cloud sourced coterie of meddlers, the anti-fluoride lobby. Future generations of children and adults, young and ageing will now be denied the health benefits of a safe and proven program that adds fluoride to our town water. About 90 per cent of Australians enjoy the decay fighting benefits of water fluoridation - except Queensland where fluoridation is once again optional. Queensland children have the highest decay rate in the country. Water fluoridation is simply the topping up of the levels of naturally occurring fluoride in the water to strengthen teeth against decay. Fluorides are minerals found very commonly in the Earth’s crust and in all water supplies. Scientists in the ’30s found that people living in towns with higher levels of fluoride in the water experienced less tooth decay than people living in areas with much lower levels of fluoride.

Community fluoridation of water began in America in 1945 and spread rapidly once its effectiveness against tooth decay became obvious. I am gobsmacked that, despite reading the council required at least 50 per cent return level of its fluoride survey forms to change its existing fluoridation policy, something quite different eventuated. Must I now take promises and statements from our elected representatives at Southern Downs Council as expedient and questionable at best, and at worst, possibly worthless? It does not auger well for the future well-being of our citizens when important council decisionmaking is informed by such a cavalier, unethical, and uneducated source as an anti-fluoride lobby. No excuses. Councillors have quick and easy access to scientific facts. No, you don’t have to wade through reams of paper, dear representatives, research results such as this are beautifully readable and clearly stated by the time the research is peer reviewed and hits print - so quick and easy to find these things out rather than rely on ranters. IF CHRIS Morison (Letters, 9 December) had read the previous edition of the Free Times he/she would have learned that in the November council meeting councillors formally acknowledged that they had made a mistake when they agreed that more than 50 per cent of the fluoridation survey forms had to be received back before council considered it to be a valid survey. A 50 per cent return rate was always an unrealistically and unachievable high ceiling for this kind of survey. With a least one in every four Warwick water ratepayers and one in every three Stanthorpe water ratepayers responding, the response rate was actually very high, considering that many community surveys only achieve a five to 10 per cent return rate. It was also acknowledged in the council meeting that only 300 responses were received to do the Community Plan. The fluoride survey received over 2400 responses and was statistically very strong, showing that 65 percent of the Warwick community and 70 per cent of the Stanthorpe community wanted fluoridation discontinued. Congratulations to the large majority of Southern Downs councillors who listened to the public and voted to end forced fluoridation. On 8 January the Southern Downs region will join the 95 per cent of the world’s population who do not engage in the archaic 1950s USA practice of water fluoridation. TO “Thanks for Nothing” (Letters, Free Times, 11 December). I understand your disappointment but cannot agree with the stance you base it on. Contrary to what you declare, there is science that supports the anti-fluoride argument. I find myself wondering if there is such a need for fluoride added to the water when fluoride toothpaste is so readily available? Personally I have managed to maintain most of my teeth to an advanced age (don’t make me lie) by good tooth hygiene and an avoidance to sugary foods, candy and soft drinks. The worst offender and widely consumed destroyer of teeth is Coca-Cola. Perhaps more education in the factors I have mentioned with the addition of fluoride added toothpaste if desired would lead to what we all want, a healthy outcome for more. Kids in particular! IN THE Free Times of 4 December, it was reported that the mayor was critical of the expense of $10,000 of council funds to seek community feelings on the fluoridation issue. I don’t seem to recall the mayor complaining about the annual cost of putting the poison in the water. What they don’t say is more important than what they do say. Maybe I am missing something. Was it the mayor’s suggestion that the results of the survey should be declared invalid, as first suggested? This has overtones of the farce of elections when an outsider gains enough support, the electoral commission and the media persecute them for challenging predetermined opinions. C. Keep it fair RE: MINISTER Crisafulli and fair local government elections. Every voter is entitled to have a fair and democratic vote in every election. In January of this year, Local Government Minister Crisafulli received a submission from the residents and ratepayers of the Granite Belt concerning rorts and irregularities rife within the electoral system pertaining to local government elections. He told us he shared our concerns and would take action - we are still waiting. With the next council elections due in 2016 the people of the Granite Belt have good reason to be concerned that their voting system is so flawed that it fosters corrupt practices like voter fraud, voter duress and the exclusion of voters from taking part in a democratic election process. Over time people have witnessed all of these things happening as a result of current postal voting systems. Minister Crisafulli if you are so concerned, how come we are heading into another rorted election process because nothing has been done to change the Southern Downs Regional Council’s insistence on postal voting? A Local Government Minister worth his salt would have insisted on the reforms that people asked for back in January. Mary Rofe, Stanthorpe.

to think what 2014 has meant for the Maranoa electorate. It has been a difficult year in the Maranoa, particularly with many areas being drought declared since early 2013. As we lead up to Christmas, I want the people of my constituency whether you’re on the land, a small business, a volunteer of a charity helping so many of those communities right now to know you are not alone. This parliament has had a responsibility to respond to drought, as have the state governments. To those who are struggling, you are not alone. I am thinking of you and I have been fighting for you throughout the year. It is my hope, before Christmas arrives, that the sky opens and brings what will help enormously, rain. The Christmas message guides us with a moral and a spiritual compass and, I believe we can all find comfort in the true meaning of Christmas. We celebrate the birth of Christ, giving us the opportunity to reflect on what truly matters. We should never forget the Christmas story is one that helps the nation. It is important that we do not just see it as another holiday, but a time for reflection and a celebration of Christ’s birth. I would also like to thank all of you who are working, volunteers, emergency workers, our troops, doctors and nurses. When we enjoy Christmas lunch or dinner with our family and friends, there are some out there who make sure we are safe, that the electricity is operating, making sure our roads are safe, looking after the sick and those in need. Terror cyclone recalled By ALENA HIGGINS ALLORA’S Jim Francis had just arrived from England and was looking for work when he volunteered to help with Cyclone Tracy disaster relief. It will be 40 years next Wednesday since the deadly tropical cyclone, the worst in Australia’s history, flattened the city of Darwin on Christmas Eve. Mr Francis, who lived through the London Blitz, said the trail of devastation and destruction of the World War II bombing raids didn’t even compare to what he witnessed at the Top End. “This was nothing like that,� the 84-year-old said. “This was absolutely horrific.� “Even though it had been over a week since Tracy had gone though the place, there was still rubbish everywhere, and the houses, which were on very tall stilts, well the tops of them had just gone. “That became our main job - to put a roof on top there and fill the sides around with tarp so they could live underneath,� Mr Francis said, who worked in Darwin on contract for three months. Back home waiting for her visa, his
wife Marian watched it all unfold on television, with regular first-hand updates from her husband. “He was absolutely gobsmacked by whole houses and cars sticking out of swimming pools,� she said. “He told me they were all sunburned underneath from the reflection of the roof, with bright red necks and bright red backs.� Acclimatising to the brutal heat was a baptism of fire, Mr Francis admits. It was freezing when I left England,� he said. “I’d never experienced anything like (the heat in Australia).� “You’d sweat and it would drip onto the tin and it would just sizzle... then it was gone so quick.� he recalled. “You can feel the heat - your feet were hot all the time because you were on the tin.“ While there, Mr Francis met the then Prime Minister Gough Whitlam’s wife, Margaret, and lived through the fear of a second cyclone warning. Cyclone Tracy claimed 66 lives and caused about $4.45 billion (2014 dollars) worth of damage.

Council cannot afford to be complacent and neither can Southern Downs communities.� Mr See said he hoped not to have to issue fines, but the current situation was “quite serious�. “We have appointed water patrol officers and water patrol vehicles to help reinforce the importance of water restrictions,� he said.
Much mulch SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council is giving away free mulch at Allora on Saturday. Residents and commercial users can pick up the mulch at the Allora Waste Facility between 8am and 5pm. Council will have an operator on site to help load mulch into vehicles. Proof of residency is required.
Waste away WASTE faciltiies across the Southern Downs will be closed on Christmas Day. Waste transfer stations across the district will re-open at normal time on Boxing Day, except for Yangan, Pratten and Wallangarra. Household garbage collections are unaffected by public holidays.
Road to repairs FLOOD repairs to roads within the Darling Downs and Lockyer Valley are almost complete. More than 772 kilometres of the road network has been repaired following the 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 natural disasters at a cost of more than $984.8 million. A remaining 41 kilometeres will be finished by Christmas. Jim Francis has recounted his time in Darwin straight after deadly Cyclone Tracy.
High level water restrictions mean residents cannot use water sprinklers or fixed irrigation systems and the maximum consumption target is 170 litres per person per day. Residents in odd number or no number properties can hand water outdoors on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays and even number properties can hand water on Saturdays, Mondays and Wednesdays for one hour only, between 6pm and 7pm. The next level is extreme, which has a maximum consumption target of 140 litres per person per day.
Anzac grants COMMUNITY groups are invited to apply for SDRC’s 2015 Anzac Commemorative Small Grants Program. Applications for a maximum of $500 can be submitted from 5 January 2015 for community groups to conduct activities and events held anytime through the Anzac Centenary year. The program will remain open for applications until the total funding pool has been allocated, or until 31 May 2015.
Beware of the water police WATER patrols will be conducted across the Southern Downs despite recent rain. Residents are being encouraged to be mindful of the high level water restrictions, which were triggered late last month, and are in effect everywhere except Killarney and Wallangarra. What’s On Charity begins at market By ALENA HIGGINS THREE months of hard work and planning will come to fruition this weekend as the Warwick Charity Markets hosts its annual Christmas event. Kicking off at 8am on Sunday, the Christmas markets will feature a host of carnivaltype activities, including face painting, a treasure hunt, stilt walker, balloon twister and even Father Christmas himself. Co-founder of Warwick
Charity Markets Virgil Bradfield started organising the event in October and is crossing his fingers for favourable weather. “There is a lot of work involved,” he said. “I’ve done all the advertising - it’s all over the TV channels and radio stations which broadcast as far afield as Kingaroy and Tenterfield.” The charity has been providing money and food to people doing it tough for the past 10 years.

Prepare to get the New Year off to a rocking start.
Swinging into the New Year THE New Year will get off to a swinging start with Blues at the Lucas Estate’s Vineyard at Severnlea. The day will include three bands: Slow Mojo from Toowoomba, Slidewinder from Brisbane and locals, Sarah and David Hume (of Bevi Aqua fame) with friends. It’s a chance to bring a picnic (no BYO drinks) and enjoy a day of music and fun. Beer, soft drinks, espresso and obviously lots of wine (most of it is ‘Award Winning’) are for sale all day. Some spiritmixed drinks will be available but not in large quantities ... people are to relax and have
fun, not get inebriated. Seats and tables are supplied and there is plenty of shade and cover available. There’s a beautiful area where people can use the shade under the trees, but here you will need to bring a picnic blanket. This area is behind the band stands, so an ideal area for those that prefer their music a little softer and it’s a good area for kids to play in sight of their nominated ‘responsible adult’. Note that numbers of people admitted to the event are limited to keep the atmosphere personal. Entry is $30 and covers the cost of the bands and you also
get an engraved wine glass filled the first time with wine. There is no charge for children, but they will not get the engraved glass or the wine of course! Children and dogs are welcome but must be in visual supervision of a nominated responsible adult. For a small fare, there is a bus from Stanthorpe and surrounds picking up from central spots. LOCAL motorists are being urged to avoid the ‘fatal five’ this festive season after RACQ CareFlight Rescue airlifted four patients from serious car crashes in the past fortnight alone. RACQ CareFlight Rescue Aircrewman, Luke Pagano, said the service sadly saw an increase in road crashes in the lead-up to Christmas. “The main causes of road crashes are drink or drug driving, speed, fatigue, driving distracted or failing to wear a seatbelt,” Mr Pagano said. “The saddest part is that all
crashes involving any of the ‘fatal five’ are completely preventable. “We urge all motorists to take extra care on the roads. We love meeting our supporters, but certainly not at the scenes of serious or fatal crashes.” Mr Pagano said one in 10 of all CareFlight missions was to treat and airlift patients seriously injured in road crashes. “Too many families are affected by these types of avoidable accidents. Please take care,” he said.
RACQ spokeswoman Eleisha Rogers said too many motorists continued to gamble with their lives behind the wheel. “It is not worth taking unnecessary risks on the road as your decisions do not just affect yourself; they can also have devastating impacts on your passengers or other road users,” Ms Rogers said. “If you are worried, you may not be fit to drive, you should seek alternate transport options such as taxis, public transport or a designated driver.”

A little parking courtesy goes a long way THE countdown to Christmas is officially on, locals are hitting the shops for festive season supplies, but some might be headed for Santa’s naughty list, according to new research. Car park courtesy is seriously lacking in Queensland, with more than half (56 per cent) of Queensland drivers saying they have had another driver steal their parking space while they were clearly waiting for
it, according to Suncorp Insurance. Suncorp insurance spokesperson, Melissa Cronin, said the statistics show Queenslanders clearly need to remember what the festive season is all about. “For some reason, instead of bringing joy to the world and peace to car parks this festive season, mums and dads, pensioners and Pplaters are turning into destructive drivers and car park stealing grinch-
es in the mad rush to nab the parking space closest to the doors,” Ms Cronin said. “We all know that in December shopping centre car parks become increasingly busy, and a free parking space - especially one close to the entrance - becomes more and more elusive, however that shouldn’t mean we let common courtesy and motoring manners fly out the window.”
Other disturbing behaviours identified in the research included: 38 per cent of Queenslanders have had their car damaged while parked in the past year. 87 per cent of those drivers said the person who caused the damage didn’t even leave a note. 18 per cent of Queensland drivers would think twice about leaving their details if they damaged a vehicle and no one saw it.

Repairs ready by Christmas FLOOD repairs to roads within the Darling Downs and Lockyer Valley are almost complete. Over the past four years, the flood reconstruction team has worked on 173 projects across 772 kilometres of the road network to repair damage resulting from the 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 natural disasters, at a cost of more than $984.8 million.
With only 41km of road left to repair, arising from the damage caused by the flood event in January 2013, construction will be finished by Christmas on all projects, reducing travel delays considerably over the holiday period, according to Department of Transport and Main Roads latest area stakeholder report. Expenditure state-wide has now exceeded $6.3 billion.

For the first time in decades, there will be no XXXX or XXXX Gold served at the Gabba - sacrilege I say. Nevertheless, I am off to the Gabba to be there for the first ball bowled and I guess I’ll just have to settle for a Carlton if the day gets too hot. This year has been another long and eventful one in sport locally, nationally and internationally. This is our final Spin for 2014 and I would like to thank all those who have contributed so religiously each week. Thanks also to our Spin readers. I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful and wet 2015. I hope you have all made it to Santa’s nice list - I have my fingers crossed for I have heard a strong rumour that the man in the red suit might finally have heard my pleas and will be leaving tickets to the Boxing Day Test under the Christmas tree. THE first Cricket Test of the summer was definitely one of the most exciting we have seen in a long time and it augers well for cricket lovers for the rest of the summer. It was certainly an emotion-charged five days, and we saw some outstanding performances with bat and ball. Dave Warner, Steve Smith and captain courageous Michael Clarke were simply extraordinary as were the Indian centurians. Nathan Lyon, who found himself axed from the side last season, bathed in the glory of a career-best 12-wicket haul and has edged within striking distance of a record that has stood for more than a century. Hugh Trumble’s record as Australia’s most successful off-spinner - 141 wickets from 32 Tests at 21.79. Lyon, a former groundsman at the Adelaide oval, now has 127 scalps. Of course as I put the last column for the year to bed, a very different Australian side prepares to take it to the Indians at the Gabba. With Michael Clarke undergoing surgery, the Australian cricket selectors have made one of the most significant calls in recent history by naming Steve Smith as the replacement captain at the age of just 25. The selectors obviously have an eye to the future and it is great to see them taking a positive outlook. There is no doubt that Smith has had an outstanding 12 months with the bat and has shown maturity beyond his years in recent times. Clarke has endorsed his replacement as the man for the job - let’s hope that the Australian team, who appear as close-knit as any side we have seen for years, also get behind the new skipper. While the big news has been the appointment of Smith, let’s not forget the selection of the Marsh brothers who will be only the fifth pair of siblings to wear the baggy green in the same game. Let’s hope they have as much success as their predecessors the Waugh twins. In spite of the return of the Indian captain M.S. Dhoni and the inclusion of several fresh faces in the Australian side, this is the perfect platform for Smith to launch his captaincy Australia is one up in the series entering a Test at the Gabba where they have almost cloak of invincibility. The biggest issue, of course, is not the Indian side or the makeup of the Aussie team - it is decision by Cricket Australia to take over management of the nation’s Test cricket venues from the states. This means of course

The program wrapped up with the running of the Mick McGrath Benchmark 60 Handicap, which was won by On Ice Now ridden by apprentice Geoffrey Leung for Toowoomba trainer Jackie Crompton. It was the young apprentice’s second win for the day after dead heating on Haveaguess. COUNTBACKS NEEDED CLOSE finishes were the order of the day at the Stanthorpe Golf Club on Saturday. In the Men’s event a countback was needed before Eric McLellan was declared the winner of the single stableford sponsored by Max Hunter. It was no different in the Ladies event with Lyn Ludlow and Linda Kelly also taking it right to the wire. Lyn Ludlow was eventually named the winner. Pin shots went to Rod Werner at 3/12 and Eric McLellan at 17. Pro-pins collected by Kev Rowling at 1/10 and Matt Waterworth at 9/18. There were no takers for ladies pin at 3/12 and Lyn Ludlow had best approach for 17. In the run down, Tom Fittock, Mick O’Brien, Lyle Bryant and Kay Webb each picked up a ball. There is only one more day of competition before the jolly man in the red suit visits and that is the 4BBB medley stableford sponsored by Bendigo Bank. (There is a time sheet on the notice board). SKIES CLEAR FOR TRIATHLON SHOOT AFTER the recent much-needed rain, the skies over the Inglewood Sporting Shooters range cleared to a perfect day last Sunday - all that a shooter could want for the annual Christmas event. The event is a triathlon shooting event, rifle, pistol and clay targets. All competitors use the same rifle, pistol and ammunition. In the junior competition things were close. With Cody Collett shooting like a future champion, Paige Donald had her work cut out, but eventually scored a one-point victory. In third spot was Atlanta Bynon. Once she learned that it was not a timed Single Action (cowboy match), she also settled down to some good shooting, a mean one with the pistol. In the senior ranks, Dick Roese the club’s member from Gosford, NSW, proved too good for runner-up Tom Donald. Third spot was decided by a shootout with Ray Dudgeon nudging out Scott Johns. A fine day of shooting was followed by an outstanding Christmas feast prepared by the ladies. I understand there are plenty of shooters sleeping with the Gaviscon by their bedside after feasting on chicken, venison, plum pudding, trifle and pavlova. Santa came early for Ray Dudgeon - he won the annual Christmas Raffle - a large toolbox outfitted with muzzle loading. After all the festivities of the Christmas shoot, it is back to a normal muzzle loading competition this Sunday at Inglewood. FESTIVE FEEL THERE was a very festive feel and perfect weather conditions for Sporters as they celebrated their Christmas hi-jinks this past Sunday. A sausage sizzle brekkie ensured everyone arrived early and hit the course before they were back in the club house for sizzling steaks, a barbecue feast and a few quiet ales for lunch. Wedged in between the sausages and steak was some golf. Angelo Doorley won the round with Norm Steele the runner-up. Run-downs went to Jim McPherson and Nic Casey. Ian Anderson had the best gross and took the Pro Pin. The Pin shot on the 12th went the way of Paul Byrnes and Ray Thorn picked up the pin at the 17th. Hams all round this week in the Mitchell households. Jim Mitchell and Jamie Mitchell each left clutching a ham. Sporters would like to thank Clarky and Clarks Bearing Service for sponsoring $50 for each Pin Shot. Local Sport SUMMIT BOWLERS CELEBRATE THE Summit Bowls club wrapped up another successful year last Saturday with their much-anticipated Christmas knees up. Between showers Saturday afternoon bowlers managed to get a few ends in before the moving on to the main event, the Christmas party. A big crowd, members and guests enjoyed the hospitality and great food. NUMBERS UP FOR RUMBLE NUMBERS are creeping back up in the Red Rooster Rumble. Twenty-four players hit the fairways last Friday. Twenty-two points was the winning score required to take out the day and that went to Kris McLennan. Alan Mathews finished in second place with 19. Rundown went to Lee Robson and Greg Wallace (18) and Helen Olsen. Keith Gunn (11), Brett Donovan (13) and Dave Duroux (16) all collected cooked chooks. If you are a follower of the RRR, you will notice that the scoring was on the low side. It is not a reflection of the quality of the play but a change in the handicapping system. It was decided that the players should go back to their club handicap to start and will be capped at four shots more maximum while social players will start at 18 in an effort to make this a much fairer event. EARLY BIRDS THE Wallangarra Rams are hoping that the early bird does get the worm - or at least the footballers. The Rams are holding a 2015 sign on day for the Men’s and Ladies teams on 20 December at the Wallangarra Oval. Past present and new players are invited to sign on and enjoy a barbecue. Good luck to the club which is showing great initiative. The Wallangarra football field is looking in sensational order following the recent rain and the committee and supporters have been busy on the end of paint brushes giving the club house a facelift. HARDY OR DESPERATE? ONLY the hardy or the desperate ventured on to the Warwick golf course in Saturday’s blustery and cool conditions to play in the Horse and Jockey sponsored single stableford. The winner was a visitor from Borneo Barracks Golf Club, Vito Fiamingo with a score of 40 points. Viv Roser was the runner-up with 39. The rundown went the way of Don Stewart (37), Neil Carney and Eddie Kemp (36) and Trevor Rock (34). The pins went to Herb Ware (5), Cam Scutts (7), Tony Kahler (9), Rod MacDonald (11), Don Stewart (13) and Rob Lester (16). The Warwick golf course is looking a picture at the moment with many members saying that it is the best shape they have ever seen. ARMIDALE TO HOST 9’s PRE-SEASON COMP THE Armidale Rams RLFC is hosting the Inaugural Armidale Ex-Services Rugby League Nine’s competition on 28 February. The competition is open to all CRL/QRL/ NSW RL affiliated clubs (with permission granted from the relevant group/region). Clubs aiming to kick start their 2015 season might look to entering a team to get some early game time under their belts and the chance to earn some prize money. The competition is already shaping as a funfilled day at Blush Tomato Park (Rugby League Park) in Armidale. The combined scores of P. Williams and J. Green were good enough to win the day and claim the Hams. There were plenty of other goodies to be shared among the other golfers and no-one went home empty handed.
K. Williams had the pin shot at 3/15 and A. Pearce at nine while T. Murphy had the best Approach shot. The club has welcomed two new members, Brodie Black and Harry Donnelly. These two young gentlemen are just starting out and showing a keen interest in golf and everyone is looking forward to tracking their progress. COLTS REMAIN UNBEATEN WARWICK Hotel Colts continued on their winning way with a nine-wicket win over Wheatvale last Sunday. Some handy bowling performances from the Colts attack had their batsmen chasing only a 101 run total. Cameron Pearson bowled beautifully for Colts, finishing with figures of 3/19 while Colts captain Shaun O’Leary was also among the wickets, taking 4/22. Colts in-form opener Geoff Thorley added a half century to an impressive season batting performance as he and opening partner Maugan Benn (43) guided the side to another victory. Colts now have their eyes fixed firmly on the premiership prize. EASY WIN FOR MARYVALE CONDAMINE Maryvale Condamine celebrated an eightwicket win over Sovereign Animals last weekend in the Warwick competition. Sovereign Animals went in to the game short of numbers - down three players and were always going to struggle.
Dave Walker destroyed the Animals’ batting line-up. In a seven over stint, he took five wickets for only eight runs as Animals slumped to be all out for only 39 runs. Tony Munro was the only batsman to show any resistance, making 29 before he was dismissed. In reply, Maryvale cruised to the easiest of wins - losing two wickets as they skipped past the required total. ANOTHER WIN FOR INGLEWOOD INGLEWOOD cricketers notched up another victory last weekend when they easily accounted for Railway Hotel Rascals in the game played at Allora on Saturday. Inglewood set the Rascals a total of 201 to chase after some fine batting. Rick Reilly top scored with 81 and was well supported by Jamien Smith (39) and Ryan Donovan (22). Rascals put up little or no resistance against the Inglewood bowlers in their innings and were dismissed for only 50 runs. Bowling honours went to Matt Shaw who took two wickets for three runs from his six overs. Others among the wickets were Troy Callaghan with 2/5 from four overs; Tyler Wolff 2/10 from his two overs and Ryan Donovan also picked up two wickets. RAIN DISRUPTS CRICKET THE heavy rain associated with the fierce storm in Stanthorpe last Thursday played havoc with the scheduled cricket fixtures last weekend. The annual Over 40s cricket game was cancelled as were all club cricket fixtures after the rain-affected wickets were declared unplayable.
