CITY Hall could swap its busport facility for Deakin University’s waterfront car park to build a Geelong convention centre, according to a new State Government minister.

Lisa Neville, Labor’s Member for Bellarine, said the convention centre could become a reality only on the Deakin car park.

“That’s the site and it can’t be successful unless it is,” Ms Neville told the Independent.

“It is time to undertake some serious negotiations with Deakin.

“Of course, busport is owned by the council, so it would need to be involved in those negotiations.”

Ms Neville said a Labor election commitment to establish a central Geelong planning authority would be part of a renewed push to develop the longawaited convention centre.

“I see an opportunity for the Geelong planning authority to work with the community and council on upgrading the central businesses district and the convention centre.

“There’s a role for the authority to drive those sorts of projects, like Jeff Kennett did for the waterfront.

“The idea behind it is to centralise planning controls. It has to be driven and implemented through a centralised planning process because council is not best placed do it.

“Things are moving at snail’s pace with no way forward.

Ms Neville said the new planning authority would “sit above council“. “We have to move more quickly and you need higher level powers to do it.�

Ms Neville, Minister for Evironment, Climate Change and Water, and said the new authority would integrate with the government’s planning and local government ministries.

Member for Lara and Sport Minister John Eren said the Lisa Neville planning authority would also ensure a “proper� business case and feasibility study for the convention centre proposal. “I don’t believe a proper one has been done,� he said. “We have to make sure it stacks up, especially in regard to location.�

Mr Eren said the fact council was “not up to� the planning requirements for the convention centre had come through “loud and clear�.

THE CATS have continued their promotion of women in the male-dominated AFL, appointing Deakingraduated sports scientist Sophia Samartzis as football operations manager.

She’ll work with football operations boss Steve Hocking in the wake of Neil Balme’s defection to Collingwood.

Samartzis completed a sports science placement at the Cats in 2010 as part of her uni studies and was head trainer at Williamstown for two years before returning to Deakin for an honours degree.

THE LEGEND of a Portuguese Man of War landing on the local coastline was revived at Torquay this week.

But this time there was a real sting to the landing as thousands of the modern-day invaders, commonly known as bluebottles, swarmed ashore after strong winds.

Live Saving Victoria’s Paul Shannon said they still had a nasty sting even when out of the water and should be avoided.

He urged victims to pour warm water over any sting and to seek medical attention in the event of a severe reaction.

Girls school caught up in ‘slush fund’ scandal

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN MATTHEW Flinders Girls Secondary College is under investigation as part of an alleged $28 million Education Department slush fund.

The school was allegedly used as a “banker school” holding $4.8 million for high-ranking Education Department officials operating the slush fund, a Fairfax report revealed this week.

Victoria’s anti-corruption watchdog confirmed it was investigating allegations the slush fund was used to siphon money from needy schools around the state to pay for overseas trips, cars and conferences.

A 2011 audit uncovered the slush fund, operating as Program Coordinator Schools, ostensibly to help fund lo-

cal education needs.

The audit reportedly found that funds were withdrawn from the accounts, held by schools including Matthew Flinders, and used for other purposes without proper documentation or financial safeguards.

The “banker schools“ benefited from keeping interest earned on the money they held, with some also receiving extra grants.

The audit said the fund was operated in a way creating a high risk of fraud and presented State Government with a significant risk to its reputation.

The investigation comes at an awkward time for the newly-elected Labor Government because program was set up when the ALP was last in power.

An Education Department spokesman said the program supported

schools to collectively deliver programs to suit their local needs.

“This can include sharing the purchase of music programs, counsellors and specialist support staff, professional development courses and sport activities across a group of schools.

These arrangements are entirely appropriate,” the spokesman said.

“A departmental review of the program led to a range of recommendations to ensure funds are subject to strict controls.

“The recommendations included strengthened governance and audit processes and procedures. The department continues to review and strengthen processes for this program.

“The use of schools to bank funding for non-school purposes is banned.

“The department takes seriously its

obligation to the Victorian public to operate in a transparent manner.

“Any use of taxpayer funds for personal expenses is utterly inconsistent with the Department’s policies and the Code of Conduct for Victorian public sector employees.

“Since 2011, the department has systematically strengthened auditing, purchasing and operational procedures and processes across the Department and referred matters - where appropriate - to IBAC (Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission) for further investigation.

“The Department continues to fully cooperate with IBAC. “Due to IBAC’s ongoing investigations, the department is unable to provide further comment at this time.”

Victoria Police confirmed the nine-month-old died in the Royal Children’s Hospital yesterday after suffering serious head injuries on Saturday night.

The man, in his 60s, rolled the van on Blackgate Rd but collapsed at the scene after leaving the vehicle.

Police and support services are on standby, with Christmas highlighted on their calendars as times of crisis.

Acting Sergeant Natasha Powles, from the Family Violence Unit, said police would soon begin con-

tacting recidivist offenders and victims.

“Police recognise there’s an increased risk of violence in the home during that period in our area and we’re highlighting to them that it’s a time of increased risk,’’ she said.

“We’ve warned women that Christmas can be a time when they’re more exposed to violence.’’

Act Sgt Powles said family violence went beyond socio-economic boundaries but was often linked to self-control issues, increased alcohol intake

and the stress of stretched family finances around Christmas.

Family services support agency Bethany has recorded a steady increase in family violence throughout the year.

Agency executive Grant Boyd said the festive period was often a time for pressure on families.

Bethany had a range of programs to help men, women and children deal with violence and family relationship issues, he said.

Lyons’ ‘$52m’ short of support

By NOEL MURPHY MAYOR Darryn Lyons has drawn $52 million in media attention to Geelong, according to figures in a new report outlining his first year in office.

The Vision Passion Change One Year On report said his @Geelong_Mayor Twitter account drew 1.29 billion impressions, with 848 million receiving tweets.

The account garnered 109,000 followers, while his personal Twitter following climbed from 900,000 to 1.2 million.

The mayoral Facebook account had 8.4 million unique browsers for a total reach of 30.2 million, with an average 838 likes per post.

The 24-page report valued the media draw at $18.8 million online, $19.6 million on TV and $13.1 million in print.

“When has anyone outside of Geelong (or indeed, in Geelong!) known who the Mayor is?!” Cr Lyons wrote in the document.

“They do now. People are sitting up

and taking notice of our wonderful city and that can only be a good thing.

“It means when you turn up on their doorstep and say you are from Geelong, chances are you will have a foot in the door and that they will welcome you and want to hear what you have to say.

“All because they have seen me on the television, internet, newspapers or magazines, or heard me on the radio. That is the power of a strong brand.”

Despite the strong figures, councillors

this week refused to back Cr Lyons’ call for Bruce Harwood to be reinstated as deputy mayor, backing Michelle Heagney instead.

Cr Rod Macdonald emailed councillors with an 11th-hour pitch but withdrew soon after. He did not return the Indendent’s requests for comment but a councillor, speaking on condition of anonymity, said “someone got at him”.

Marketing guru Michael Nelthorpe said the Vision report’s figures required closer inspection.

“Tony Abbott recently had 850,000 likes but the city where the likes were most concentrated was near Delhi.

You’ve got to work out whether they’re useful,” Mr Nelthorpe said.

In contrast, footballer Buddy Franklin started a fashion label, “paid for 90,000 likes and was an overnight sensation”.

Mr Nelthorp described the 1.2 billion figure as “quite extraordinary” but said Geelong should highlight information such as population, skills sets and financial backing to attract investors.

“This could free up space for the community to see more of Geelong’s history, to display more of its heritage.”

LEGAL AID has called for more Geelong cash to help nip criminal problems in the bud following the Productivity Commission saying the system is $200 million shy of the money needed.

Tighter access to free aid has been denying Geelong people advice, clogging courts and curbing lawyers’ ability to answer rising numbers of calls for help, according to Barwon Community Legal Service.

Victorian Legal Aid has backed the claims after talks with the Barwon service, Family Relationship Centre, Bethany and Lifeworks.

GEELONG’S Customs House should become a museum celebrating the city’s immigration, wool and gold history, according to heritage councillor Tony Ansett.

The move could draw more tourists to central Geelong and help free up North Geelong’s Osborne House to display heritage collections in storage across the city.

The sandstone and basalt Customs House, built in 1856 at the corner of Moorabool and Brougham Sts, is considered one of the finest mid-19th Century public buildings in Western Victoria. The council-owned building has a restaurant and cafe in its lower level but the two upper levels are closed to the public.

“I see the Customs House as being able to tell Geelong’s immigration story, about Geelong’s role in the Gold Rush and the wool story with all the clippers on the waterfront,” Cr Ansett said.

“This would complement the National Wool Museum diagonally across the road. A museum close to the waterfront could capture a lot more tourists.”

Cr Ansett said he had yet to run his idea past maritime museum staff at Osborne House and was worried it “might give them a heart attack”.

The Mental Health Australia survey last month also found that 46 per cent had difficulty attracting new staff, 53 per cent had reduced services to clients and 81

per cent reported declining staff morale.

More than half said they were still yet to hear about Commonwealth funding after June 2015.

Around 90 per cent would have to reduce staff and services if they failed to receive an answer.

Ms Crowther said some cli-

GEELONGâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S jobs prospects are positive post2016 despite its manufacturing downturn, federal MP Sarah Henderson has declared.

The Liberal Member for Corangamite said jobs growth was predicted to pick up after 2016, when Ford closes its local operation.

She was responding to a story in last weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Independent about the Barwon region having the slowest projected jobs growth in the state.

Ms Henderson said some industry sectors, such as construction, had strong jobs growth. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are a number of major projects on the go, including the Epworth hospital and the newly announced GMHBA complex in Armstrong Creek, combined with the Workcover relocation.

These projects will see hundreds of jobs in the building and construction sector along with substantial growth in the private sector.â&#x20AC;?

Ms Henderson said a Deakin University assessment of Geelongâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s labour market predicted robust jobs growth after 2016.

The study predicted losses in manufacturing but gains in the services sector, with â&#x20AC;&#x153;net positive growthâ&#x20AC;? in 2015/2016.

AN APP for Geelong Cats members to resell unused tickets could reduce empty game-day seats at Simonds Stadium, club chief Brian Cook has revealed.

He said the club was working on the application, aimed at reducing the number of vacant seats from patrons reserving them but failing to attend.

“We’re noticing that we’re selling out but there are more noshows,” Mr Cook said.

“That’s due to a combination of night fixtures, day fixtures and people only expecting to go to six of the eight games.

“The issue is about resale of those seats as distinct from actually selling them in the first place and getting people to show up.”

Mr Cook said the club had previously trialled a resale process for tickets but it was not “very popular”.

“I actually think that in Geelong when people purchase a membership they know it’s going to be part of a donation as well.

“We’ll have an application at some stage where people simply push a button and resell their seat and get those dollars back.”

The Independent reported last week that Simonds Stadium struggled to fill its 33,500 capacity, with 2014’s largest crowd totalling 27,402 when the Cats hosted North Melbourne.

Mr Cook was speaking at a media conference when new Sports Minister John Eren announced a recommitment of Labor’s election promise of $70 million for a stage four redevelopment of the Simonds Stadium to accommodate 36,000.

Mr Eren said the Cats, the AFL and City of Greater Geelong would fund the rest of the $90 million project, which would redevelop the stadium’s Brownlow and Jennings stands.

No federal funding was committed, he said.

“Frankly, it’s too hard to play the politics with the (federal gov-

ernment) that normally occurs with funding arrangements.”

Mr Eren said he was working through the finer details of a proposed trust to oversee the stadium, along similar lines to the MCG Trust.

Mr Cook said the club still wanted eight games at the ground during the construction phase from late 2015 to 2016.

“Once it is completed we’ll be pushing for nine games,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Cats have rearranged their coaching panel, with former champion defender Matthew Scarlett returning as a part-time development coach, VFL coach Matthew Knights becoming an assistant and former Geelong Falcons coach Paul Hood taking over the VFL job.

GEELONG’S music industry is in mourning after Sweethearts founder and 25-year director Ross Lipson this week succumbed to cancer.

The 57-year-old music teacher steered hundreds of young women to musical adulthood through the enormously successful brass band Sweethearts at Matthew Flinders Girls Secondary College.

Mr Lipson was revered by his charges and all associated with Sweethearts, and praised as a creative genius.

He died Wednesday morning after a long illness.

Sweethearts was subject of the

Emmy-nominated, 13-part ABC3 series Heart and Soul. A second season is in post-production and expected to air next year following the band’s recent US tour of Motown and performances at the world’s largest music festival, Summerfest, in Milwaukee.

The band has played several times at major jazz festivals in Switzerland and Italy.

1440 productions’ Kristy Fuller, who directed the TV series, said Mr Lipson’s impact had been massive.

“We lost a legend, everyone’s in shock,” she said.

“The girls are devastated.

There are 25 student years of girls

whose lives he touched.

“Working with Ross and the Sweethearts has been one of the most rewarding things I've done as a producer.

“Ross was one of those few people who were truly selfless and worked his whole life making incredible opportunities for these young women.

“In return, he was incredibly well loved and will be missed terribly.“ Illness kept Mr Lipson from the band over the past 12 months, with Steve McEwan stepping into the breach.

Mr Lipson is survived by wife Bea and children Holly and April.

Council’s vote bans circuses

By NOEL MURPHY SURF Coast Shire has banned circuses with caged exotic animals despite operators’ pleas to prove their welfare credentials.

The decision will frustrate the circus industry, which has argued against confusing “animal rights extremism” with animal welfare.

The industry has also questioned the role of Mayor Margot Smith, an RSPCA director, in spearheading the ban.

The RSPCA helped draft the circus federation’s code of conduct. Cr Smith cited the RSPCA

earlier this year in a notice of motion seeking the ban.

Cr Smith told the Independent she “was not involved in the vote or discussion” when council banned the circuses this week.

An officer report to council said the ban sought to “make a statement about improving the environment for wild/exotic animals used in circuses and events”.

“The policy aims to implement the council decision to not support circuses with caged wild animals reflecting broader social concerns in relation to the appro-

priate treatment of animals.”

The council ban was predicated on concerns raised about a tethered elephant at Torquay some years ago.

The council did not undertake community consultation prior to the ban or respond to Eroni’s Circus’s request to perform locally as a case study.

“It’s important to note that this position isn’t about marginalising circuses at all – there are fantastic circuses that perform without the need to cage wild animals for performances,” Cr Smith said.

Jean’s looking good after 100 years NEWTOWN’S Jean Richardson always jokes about someone making a miscalculation when they bring up her age.

“She says she doesn’t feel she’s 100,” says granddaughter Kathryn Cotter.

She certainly doesn’t look it, either, as a photo from Mrs Richardson’s birthday last weekend clearly attests.

“We had a lovely party at my home in Geelong West,” Ms Cotter said.

“Fifty family and friends celebrated, with many guests from interstate and country Victoria.”

Some dignitaries participated in writing, with the Queen, Prime Minister, Governor General and her local federal MP all sending Mrs Richardson letters of congratulation on the milestone.

“She’s waiting at the letterbox for one from the new premier,” Ms Cotter said.

The youngest of eight children, Mrs Richardson was born in McKillop St, just blocks away from her present home.

She married Maxwell Richardson in 1943. The couple raised three children in Noble St, Newtown.

“Jean was a very keen gardener, volunteer and involved with St David’s Church,” Ms Cotter said.

Unborn tool in Anglesea fight SURF Coast air activists are ramping up Anglesea’s anti-coal scare campaign, accusing Alcoa’s power station of emitting arsenic, lead and mercury near their homes.

Surf Coast Air Action accused Alcoa of arrogance and posted a Twitter photo of a pregnant woman clasping her stomach in the latest of a long-running campaign against the company’s Anglesea plant. “@Alcoa Emitting Arsenic, Lead and Mercury near our homes and school is not OK,” the post said.

The name of an additional chemical, dioxin, is superimposed on the image, borrowed from US environmental group Sierra Club.

The Sierra Club image claims “when pollution from coal and coal-fired power plants makes its way into our bodies, it endangers our children’s health”.

“At least 1 in 12, and as many as 1 in 6 women in the US has levels of toxic mercury in her body that would put a baby at risk of developmental problems,” it continues.

SCAA also claimed patience in Anglesea was “wearing thin” as an “arrogant” Alcoa continued “to vacillate on the future of the dirty, redundant coal plant”.

Alcoa told the Independent the plant emitted arsenic, lead and mercury but only at significantly lower levels than deemed dangerous to health.

“These substances are emitted from the Anglesea power station, as reported in the National Pollutant Inventory,” the company said.

“In the Anglesea Human Health Risk Assessment (HHRA), published in August 2013, modelled ground level concentrations for arsenic, lead and mercury are orders of magnitude

Meanwhile, Alcoa’s coal-fired power station remains on the market, with more than 80 jobs threatened if a buyer cannot be found.

A union representative of the workers has accused SCAA of threaning their jobs with its campaign to close the plant.

Alcoa no longer needs the power after closing its Point Henry plant this year.

The aluminium company insists it has potential buyers in the wings.

“Alcoa has received several

bids for the Anglesea power station and coal mine and we continue to work through the process,” spokesperson Kate Betts told the Independent.

“This is a complex process, with many considerations, but we continue to be focused on working through it as quickly as possible so that our employees and the community can have some certainty about the future of the Anglesea operations.

“If a sale is not possible, we will evaluate options at that time.”

The EPA said the power station operated under an EPA licence that specified allowable air emissions.

“Alcoa’s most recent air monitoring results show that air emissions from the Anglesea power station comply with EPA licence limits and policy standards,” a spokesperson said.

“The company reports against the requirements of the licence in the Annual Performance Statement, which is available on EPA’s website, epa.vic.gov.au.

“The company also reports to the National Pollutant Inventory, which is available at npi.gov.au.”

Refurbishment well underway Ever since July earlier this year, local builders Matt O’Toole and Andrew Fawcett from Fawcett O’Toole have been working hard with plans and manual labour to bring Freedom Aged Care to life for its residents.

The remodelling will cost about $30,000 per unit and approximately up to two million for the communal areas.

This means there will be nearly $4 million invested to make this community fit the

living standard and service provision of the Freedom Aged Care model which has provided comfortable units for people all over the state who proudly call them home.

The team is currently completing a master plan for the village, which will focus on remodelling the community’s communal areas to include larger dining areas, activity spaces, the opening of a hairdressing salon, a doctors and consultation room, a movie and entertainment theatre

and new landscaping, gardens and pathways.

All units are also undergoing exciting refurbishments to bring the most modern self contained features to all of their valued residents. SOMETIMES it’s just nice to find slightly unusual or less-obvious but still wonderful gifts to give at this time of year, or in fact throughout the year when an occasion arises.

Items that you don’t find or see everywhere often create an instant smile and positive reaction of, “Oh that’s so cool”, or “Where did you find that, it’s great?”.

So this week I popped into Highton and visited a vintage boutique store named Ruby & Leo, an exciting shop with a vast selection of quirky goods.

Inside I found beautiful, intricate hand-made-in-Australia hanging ornaments, called terrariums.

They’re transparent glass made to look like an oversized lightbulb delicately filled at the bottom with neatly placed artificial plants, flowers and miniature birds.

Captivating to look at and available in a range of sizes, the smallest was $29.50 and looked so cute.

They would look lovely hanging in a conservatory, or even in a kitchen or bathroom.

Talking of bathrooms, I found some gorgeous blue Parisienne-style glass jars.

Filled with your own product, they would look tasteful and stylish situated in the right décor.

The large jars was $11.50 or you could opt for the smaller one at $9.50.

Another potential gift – or gift to oneself, ha-ha – that caught my eye was leather bracelets in a range of colours, with a purchasable extra selection of decorative interchangeable buttons.

Biodiversity up in smoke VICTORIA is facing one of the gravest threats to its biodiversity since the 1950s, with an almost unprecedented amount of deliberate bushfires planned.

Turn the page on mayor and council I HAVE just received the City of Greater Geelong 2015 calendar.

In general, it is debatable whether many will use it given modern technology. However, the unbelievable misuse of it to promote the mayor is a disgrace and should never have been allowed by council.

This, coupled with the outrageous Christmas tree, demonstrates a mayor completely out of touch with the financial pressures facing many in our community.

These actions will put pressure to increase our rates at a time when the region is facing unprecedented unemployment challenges, thanks to the Abbott Government, and decreasing employment opportunities.

The question is: how do we

rid ourselves of this mayor?

One way would be to petition the new Labor State Government to reject the failed directly elected mayoral procedure, introduced by the previous coalition government and used nowhere else than Geelong.

Alternatively, as a retiree living at Ocean Grove, I suspect many residents in the area would be delighted to get out of City of Geelong and have our own council on the Bellarine Peninsula. This would avoid the large rate increases that will flow from the excesses of our mayor.

I think this is worth a public debate.

While individual “planned-burn” areas are smaller than a naturally-occurring bushfire, the total area destroyed by planned bushfires is much larger.

First, most planned bushfires burn at a higher intensity than intended and many escape containment, burning much larger areas than planned.

Secondly, statistics released selectively by the Department of Primary Industries (DEPI) do not show the cumulative effects of planned bushfires, thus disguising their true impact on biodiversity.

Contrary to DEPI claims that it aims for a “fire mosaic” in its planned-bushfire program, it actually aims for the opposite; to maximise the area burnt within a particular time-since-fire class by placing planned burn areas next to one another.

As a consequence, areas burnt in one year and which are still largely black with very little regrowth, if any, will have planned bushfires ignited next to them the following year or two, creating a much larger burnt area.

As well as the initial destruction of flora and fauna that takes place in planned bushfires, further loss occurs as a result of pest plants and animals that invade freshly burnt areas.

while foxes and cats, which can now move freely over the open ground, decimate any surviving small mammals that now have no protective cover as a result of the planned bushfire.

Wrong on rights AS THE democratic world celebrated Human Rights Day on Wednesday, Australians were forced by Immigration Minister Scott Morrison to hang their heads in shame.

Not only is he responsible for the unnecessary prolonged detention of children, he used their plight as a bargaining chip for his reprehensible Migration and Maritime Powers Bill.

In November a scathing report from the cross-party Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights condemned the Bill, finding it incompatible with Australia's human rights responsibilities and obligations.

Unbelievably, Mr Morrison then further exploited the children’s vulnerability by facilitating their phone calls to Senator Ricky Muir to ensure passage of the Bill in the senate during the early hours of 4 December.

AT A RECENT forum conducted by Melbourne Chamber of Commerce at Deakin University’s Waterfront campus, keynote speaker Bernard Salt highlighted Geelong’s many competitive advantages, such as its enviable lifestyle and commutability.

He also touched on a couple of other key notions with potential to change the way Geelong is viewed and that offer a way forward as our economy rapidly transforms into the growing services sector.

He cited work undertaken in the UK on “magnet cities” and Geelong as a niche city.

Geelong is emerging as Australia’s first magnet city, with a strong magnetic pull that draws in people and business investment.

He also spoke about the opportunities in embracing a culture of entrepreneurialism. And there are many great examples of that happening already: Cotton On, Boundary Bend Olives and the many SMEs that work in concert with the major drivers of our diverse local economy.

Geelong needs to celebrate more of its local success stories and cultivate that entrepreneurial spirit on which our great city was founded.

Geelong has all the right ingredients to be that magnet city and to build skills in entrepreneurialism for the benefit of the whole community.

As a connected and engaged city, Geelong is ready to take its place on the global stage as one of the world’s most livable cities.

WHAT a great letter from Alan Barron in last week’s Independent.

He is getting much more convincing and confident, is he not?

If I wasn’t already a brainwashed “warmist”, then he’d have me questioning the whole “global warming theory”, too.

And yet more calls for the Independent to stop publishing his letters, based on the idea that just about every one of Mr Barron’s letters contains multiple fabrications or at least complete manipulations of reality. Opinion it is not.

It’s a delicate issue, isn’t it? Many have tried, including myself, but the letters section of the Independent is for the publishing of outright conspiracy theories just as much any other local issue, so what can you do?

Although it’s tempting to prove some of his facts wrong by quoting some reputable source of information – such as the IPCC, Bureau of Meteorology, the Climate Council et cetera – it should seem obvious that it would disprove nothing because all these sources are in on the conspiracy, too.

On the other hand, and in a stroke of brilliance to prove he cannot be beaten, Mr Barron quoted Professor Tim Flannery – yes, the chief councillor of the Climate Council – to support his idea that action on climate change is pointless.

Now was that irony or just plain old misleading?

The act means Mr Morrision now has unfettered powers not to protect people who have the right under international law to seek asylum.

For example, with exemption from the protection of maritime laws, apprehended boats with men, women and children can be towed beyond Australian waters and abandoned without regard to safety considerations.

A non-transparent process for fast-tracking refugee applications will be established and the icing on Mr Morrison’s cake will be his right to forcibly return people to places where their lives will be at risk.

I can only say, ‘Not in my name, nor in the names of the growing numbers of concerned citizens across Australia who want an end to the demonising and vilification of people seeking asylum and the introduction of refugee policies that uphold human rights’.

Motor City next trick for Smith

Smith is lined up to play at Geelong’s upcoming Motor City Music Festival. He’ll have on board with him keyboard guru and humourist Richard Tankard and gun guitarist Shannon Bourne, who seems set to be sharing festival stages with another blues legend in Chris Wilson.

It will be a rare opportunity for 66-yearold Smith, who doesn’t play as often as in the past.

He’s lived at Castlemaine for 20 years and enjoys a quieter pace of life; writing, getting out to the occasional festival, gigging with the remarkable Backsliders, the odd bit of art work and acting and prison work.

When he’s not playing, Smith helps people deal with life inside four even more restrictive walls than office buildings– working at Dhurringile and Loddon prisons.

“Basically, I facilitate more than anything.”

“They don’t want to be studious, they just want to bash things, play some rock.

“The Islanders will rap, it’s interesting. I try to nurture them into writing songs.

“They’ve got all the gear, not top-line stuff but it works, and they’re allowed acoustic guitars in their cells but not with steel strings.

“We’ve become quite friendly. I never ask what they’re in for, it’s not my business.

“Besides, they’re doing time for it already. I try to give something they can do in their cells, noodling around on guitar is kind of like meditating.

“It’s very good for them because what they’re trying to do is beat the clock, they want it to go faster.”

FEW musicians can turn their hand to as many tricks as blues legend Broderick Smith.

The singer-songwriter and blues harp Aussie icon might be renowned for his work with the Dingoes, Carson, Big Combo and solo work but he’s been many other things, too.

Actor, graphic artist, teacher, copywriter, soldier, storeman, drummer, guitarist, banjo player – it’s an extensive list and this one isn’t even exhaustive. Smith will happily turn his hand to whatever’s on hand.

But when it’s not working, he’s out, and sometimes for reasons not everyone might fathom.

“For a brief spell I was working in advertising, earning lots of money,” he told the Independent.

“I found myself coveting this car, a Porsche. Jesus, it was a great looking car but after a while I thought, ‘Hold on, I’m not a car guy, I’m coveting things I don’t want’.

“People get caught up in that, I didn’t – I threw in the job.”

Music had been eminently more rewarding, Smith said.

“I’ve had a lot of doctors and lawyers who say they wished they played music. I think that’s because they’re confined to rooms and it drives them nuts.

“Years ago, when I was in ads, I had a big government department CEO almost got teary on phone telling how he went to uni, had all this stuff going on around him, but then found himself stuck working in a building looking at a grey wall out his window.

“I ended up counselling the bloke.”

LEGENDARY Aboriginal singer and songwriter Archie Roach has a renewed lease on life, with new songs on a new album and an accompanying live show.

Roach brings the show to Geelong tonight when he performs at Barwon Heads’ 13th Beach Golf Links for welfare agency Karingal’s Music to a Tee concert series.

In 2010 Roach experienced several setbacks, losing soul mate Ruby Hunter and later suffering a stroke. In 2011 he was diagnosed with the early stages of lung cancer.

Despite pain and suffering forming an integral part of Roach’s musical expression, he has since turned to joy and hope and the idea of lifting himself and others up through song.

He said the new album,

Into The Bloodstream, and the life-affirming live shows of the same name, were about “finding strength” then giving it expression.

“It’s about overcoming difficulties and singing more uplifting songs that are not so much about suffering and pain but rising above that,” Roach explained.

“Going through what I have has made me realise that a big part of people getting sick has to do with holding onto pain and not letting it go.

“That was the inspiration behind it all, letting go of the pain and the bad stuff and holding onto something good and strong.”

The live shows – infused with doses of uplifting gospel and soul stirrings – are also in many ways the story of Roach’s life, spanning his childhood, his “stolen years” and his long love for Hunter.

Special guests Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse from Western Australia, who perform regularly with Roach, will open the concert.

The concert series is a collaboration between 13th Beach Golf Links and Geelong-based Karingal to raise money to help build an Eastern Geelong Community Centre.

“I’m really looking forward to performing at 13th Beach and helping the Karingal Foundation raise funds to build the community centre,” Roach added.

“Being a part of a community is something to cherish and important for everyone.”

Like the crumbling of the Berlin Wall or 9-11, the events bring to mind immediate pictures of their impact on the world.

The events have often been immortalised in various accounts but the Vietnam War is captured in its essence by the enduring stage show Miss Saigon.

Footlight Productions producer Peter Wills said the local theatre company was excited to bring the “epic musical” to Geelong audiences for the first time.

“Miss Saigon tells the tragic tale of a young Asian woman and her relationship with an American soldier during the Vietnam War in the 1970s,” he explained.

“In the midst of the darkness of war this unlikely romance blossoms giving birth to a child.

However, it is the ultimate sacrifice of a mother for her child that forms the central theme of this musical.

“While the scenario is a grim one, the powerful music and surging choruses give Miss Saigon an emotional depth that accounts for the show’s enduring popularity.

“The evacuation of the last Americans in Saigon from the embassy roof by helicopter leaving behind a crowd of abandoned Vietnamese people epitomizes the struggle and the desperation of a people at war.”

The German car specialist made its own road trip recently in a short move along Autumn St to a revamped workshop, which will be the business’s new headquarters.

General manager Ben Buckle says German Automotive always tries to improve its service to customers.

The team at German Automotive uses genuine parts sourced from European suppliers and seeks customer authorisation before proceeding with any major repairs.

The workshop is equipped with dealer-standard diagnostic equipment to quickly track down any vehicle problems.

Ben and the team are very proud of the new German Automotive premises and invite all customers – new and existing – to visit the new facilities.

Frontal styling of the latest Toyota Yaris is right out of the ordinary.

The real ascent starts for Yaris

By EWAN KENNEDY TOYOTA Yaris has been given a big facelift, and has extra equipment at little or no added cost.

It’s doing a nice job of backing up big brother Corolla in the sales race (Corolla looks like being number one again this year) but Yaris may well be all that many smart buyers need, particularly if only ever used to carry one or two people.

Others find that the Yaris can be used as a family car when the kids are young.

One thing these people demand is back doors, so the threedoor Yaris hatch has been pulled out of the range.

The Yaris model names have been revised by the marketing department.

The range now starts with the 1.3-litre Ascent, the car we tested.

It now has 15-inch steel wheels instead of 14-inch.

Toyota says the additional equipment fitted on the Ascent is valued at more than $2000, yet it has kept the price steady at $15,690 for the five-speed manual and $17,290 with auto transmission.

Our review was done in a manual.

The Yaris SX powered by a 1.5-litre engine, has had its price increased by $400 to $17,790

(manual) and $19,390 (automatic).

Toyota says it now has more than $1000 of new features, foglamps, rear and side privacy glass and a new design of wheel covers.

Finally, the topline auto-only Toyota Yaris ZR has been upgraded with auto-levelling LED headlights, a rear spoiler and diffuser, side skirts and Toyota Link connected mobility.

It has more than $2000 of extra equipment but is priced only $1300 higher at $22,690.

When we opened the story by saying the Yaris has had a ‘big’ facelift that was a literal statement.

Big radiator grilles are all the rage at the moment, and the little Yaris hatch has one of the biggest and baddest of them all.

There’s an upmarket touch in the new grille as well. Lexus is the prestige division of Toyota and the revised Yaris shares some of its frontal shape style with the recently launched Lexus NX hybrid and RC coupe. That can do the tiddler no harm at all.

Changes to the interior are mainly in the trim colours to give it a brighter look but is still on the plain side to our eyes.

Yaris has a 6.1-inch display

audio screen that provides touch, drag and flick control of the type we are using in virtually all smartphones and tablets.

A telephone remote is installed on the position on the steering wheel, and the stereo now has six speakers rather than four.

Unseen, but very much appreciated, the Yaris hatch has a stiffer body shell to reduce noise, vibration and harshness.

More direct and linear steering response has been gained by new suspension calibration.

All Yaris models now have a reversing camera and there’s automatic flashing of the hazard lamps under hard braking is fitted.

You get a lot of car with an excellent reputation for reliability for comfortably under $20,000 on the road.

GEELONG Cricket Club could complete only one of two scheduled Twenty20 matches last weekend after rain washed out the entire Sunday fixture.

But on Saturday the Cats enjoyed a morale boosting victory over Melbourne University.

Batting first, Geelong began well, with Josh McDonald (49) and Hayden Butterworth (75) putting on 95 for the first wicket.

Meyrick Buchanan (24), returning for his first game this season, batted at three and helped keep the runs flowing.

Eventually the Cats managed a very healthy 4/175.

In reply, regular wickets meant that Geelong always maintained the upper hand. Jeremy Hart (2/24) was the only multiple wicket taker but all the bowlers did their bit to restrict their hosts to 6/153.

Tomorrow the team heads to Greenvale for one more Twenty20 fixture.

If the Cats can show the same form again they will be in with a big chance.

In Geelong Cricket Association, heavy rain caused the cancellation of the day’s play across all sections and grades last Saturday, meaning all games revert to one-day matches tomorrow.

Generally, the shorter the form of the game, the more chance of a lesser side getting up and causing an upset, so expect to see some underdogs claiming the six points tomorrow.

In division one, a look at the ladder sees East Belmont sitting on top undefeated.

While the Lions have beaten some quality sides of late, skipper Chris Bambury will let his charges know that finals aren’t won before Christmas and much work is still to be done.

Sharks have enjoyed resurgence this season, although they will know their draw has been kind and they need to claim the scalp of a contender before they get too excited.

They have the opportunity to do just that tomorrow against North Geelong.

Other sides that look likely to be in the mix come March are St Joseph’s and North Geelong. Both haven’t quite recaptured last year’s form but they boast too many good players to be dismissed lightly.

In division two, the ladder is shaping up nicely in what looks like being a very open field.

Four teams sit on five wins and one loss, with Thomson on top due to a superior percentage.

Right behind are St Peter’s, Torquay and Marshall.

All four have looked the goods at various stages, but it’s almost impossible to say who deserves the tag of premiership favourite and, indeed, none of them probably want it.

And finally in division three, Shelford has been the standout side so far, with Lymer brothers Shane and Michael leading their side to the top of the table.

Inverleigh is right there with them, while Meredith and Bannockburn can also lay genuine claims to being considered premiership fancies.

With some games coming up pitting the top few sides against each other, we might see a clear favourite emerge from the pack before Christmas.

THE START of summer has brought a mixed bag for local anglers.

Clifton Springs was again productive for anglers seeking all kinds of species.

Karl and Michael Fedke trolled just out from the mussel beds despite limited experience using lures for snapper. They boated a few pinkies, which helped increase their confidence, on Rapala Tail Dancers and then found a school of pike to 70cm.

Adrian Cole, Jarred Maloney and Mark Sesar fished the turn straight out from Clifton Springs’ boat ramp where they used fresh mackerel and whiting baits for a catch of seven snapper averaging 4kg. They said the fish came right on the chew once the run-out tide commenced.

Other anglers fishing Clifton Springs over the past week found great numbers of squid on the shallow grass beds.

The spoil grounds just out from Alcoa held reasonable numbers of flathead, pike and pinkies for anglers drifting and casting soft plastics. Anglers getting out on the water at day break enjoyed the best results.

Swan Bay provided some shelter from the winds, with anglers fishing the channel boating species such as Australian salmon, pike, flathead and gummy shark.

The most productive method was fishing baits such as pilchard and bluebait suspended under float or drifting the channel while casting plastics such as Gulp turtleback worm.

Rob Pantazis tried his luck fishing for sharks off Barwon Heads, boating a mako of 65kg.

Rob was using a small 10kg setup, which resulted in a one-anda-half-hour fight.

Gone Fishing Charters’ Chris Vasileksi tried similar grounds over the past week, catching snapper to 4kg as well as some large flathead on baits such as pilchard and squid.

Anglers spinning the Surf Coast beaches caught salmon to 1.5kg on lures such as Sluks.

Many anglers have been travelling far and wide since the Murray cod season opened. Lake Eildon has been the best freshwater fishery, with Robert Wood catching a well-coloured cod of 64cm

on a black and purple Stump Jumper.

Phil Nelson caught a bigger 12.9kg specimen and four others of similar weight along with some chunky yellowbelly.

Wurdee Boluc Reservoir continued providing persistent anglers with trophy redfin. Casting soft plastics along the rock wall resulted in fish to 45cm over the past week.

Anglers should continue finding good numbers around the turn off Clifton Springs over the next week, particularly on fresh baits such as squid and garfish.

Freshwater anglers should consider Lake Eildon for large yellowbelly and cod, or stick closer to home by fishing Wurdee Boluc Resrvoir for big redfin.
