■ Privacy group fights to protect clinic...

Exclusion zone By ERIN SOMERVILLE PATIENTS’ rights to medical privacy will be the centre of a forum to be staged on the Border next month, as Albury’s Rights to Privacy group continues its fight to create an exclusion zone around women’s health and abortion clinics. The forum, which is scheduled for 14 January, will reportedly be chaired by Victoria’s retired Health Services Commissioner Beth Wilson, and attended by Greens NSW Legislative Council MP Dr Mehreen Faruqi. Other high-profile politicians and figureheads have been invited, but Rights to Privacy spokesperson and forum facilitator Pieter Mourik said they can not yet be confirmed. The forum comes as the Border’s Rights to Privacy group ramps up its fight to create exclusions zones around all Women’s Health Clinics in NSW, including Englehardt Street Fertility Control Clinic, and prevent anti-abortion protesters from approaching patients or demonstrating on-site. Locally, the move would see the anti-abortion group Helpers of God’s Precious Infants (HoGPI), whose members gather outside of the Englehardt Clinic on Thursdays, removed from the vicinity. Dr Mouirk said all views are welcomed at the forum. “This forum will provide the opportunity to have a respectable debate about the importance of medical privacy that we all understand,” he said. The forum announcement from Rights to Privacy comes less than a month after two of the group’s members were issued with a civil defamation writ from Albury ear, nose and throat specialist Dr Roland von Marburg who also identifies himself as a supporter of Helpers of God’s Precious Infants, and Abortion Hurts. Dr von Marburg outlined in his statement of claim, received by the Albury Wodonga News Weekly, that the Rights to Privacy group’s Facebook page contained defamatory material posted from supporters of the page, including posts calling him a ‘butcher’ and a cocaine user. “Our action was not about social media but specific publications made,” Dr von Marburg said. “When someone bullies, harasses, and de-

Liz Marmo and Pieter Mourik help Rights to Privacy group ramp up its campaign in 2015 with a medical privacy forum planned next month, and perseverance with its petition. Picture: ADAM WILSON fames people in a publication serious damage to people really is done.” While the Victorian Supreme Court ordered that the plaintiff’s summons be dismissed without adjudication after the defendants removed the material deemed to be defamatory, and the costs of the summons and court appearance would be reserved, Dr von Marburg said the case was not over. “We are seeking serious damages against defamatory content,” he said. “Significant damage has been done.”

Dr von Marburg told the Albury Wodonga News Weekly that the court case was an “aside” from the issue of his rights to protest with HoGPI outside the Englehardt clinic. “I’m all for freedom of speech and this is part of the reason we issued the writs. There was a clear attempt to name and shame, but an exclusion zone would deny people freedom of speech. “We don’t support them and we think the majority of people don’t, the majority of Australians want people to have their say.” “We don’t (protest) in a hateful way and try and do it in a prayerful and peaceful way.”

Dr Mourik said the recent court summons has “reinvigorated” the group, which last week voted unanimously to continue Rights to Privacy Facebook page but appointed a new administrator to keep its page “more respectful and more professional”. “Since the writ against our kind, gentle, caring administrator, our group is more determined than ever to succeed in our campaign.” The group is also continuing with its petition launched in August to receive 10,000 signatures to see the issue tabled for discussion in NSW’s Legislative Assembly.

Airworthy novel set to take off

Briefly Taxi robbery A taxi-driver was robbed at knifepoint on Thursday about 9pm. The taxi driver picked up two youths from the Urana Road, Lavington, taxi rank. He drove them a short distance into Union Road, near Dick Road, before one of them produced a knife and demanded money. After obtaining cash, both youths fled and were last seen running west along Dick Road, Lavington. The taxi driver, a 30-year-old Lavington man, suffered no physical injury but was left shaken by the incident. Attackers are described as males, 15 to 16 years old, both wearing shorts, one with a white T-shirt and the other a black top. Albury detectives are investigating and are appealing to any person who has information concerning this incident to contact Albury police on (02) 6023 9299 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

By ERIN SOMERVILLE

A VISIT to Albury’s LibraryMuseum was all it took to spark off Sydney-based writer Loretta Re’s imagination and turn the story of the Uiver into a novel. Her newly-released novel Stand Up and Cheer is an older children’s book which is based on the true adventure of the Uiver plane, its crew and passsengers, and Albury. “I had a look in the LibraryMuseum and it had just a fantastic display there,” she said. “I didn’t know anything about the story, and I thought why doesn’t everyone know about this, it deserves Australia-wide recognition.” After two and a half years, Ms Re had become an expert on the Uiver and its dramatic rescue in Albury during a race around the world in 1934. Her interest in the subject soon consumed much of her time as she uncovered the facts, and gems from the story that have rarely surfaced. She learned that well-known aviator and author Antoine de Saint-Exupery had become fascinated with the Uiver and created a 1940s movie of the event, and also discovered the trophy for the 1934 London to Melbourne air race trophy had been melted down to go towards the war effort. Ms Re, whose parents and sister live in Albury, went to great lengths to ensure accuracy, and even had a friend track down Uiver Captain R.D. Parmentier’s memoirs in Holland and have them translated. A lot of the novel’s segments are based on these memoirs.

Toilet attack Between 12.30am and 1am on 19 November, a 19-year-old man was assaulted in the toilet area of a licensed premise in Dean Street, Albury. The man suffered a facial injury as a result of the assault and required treatment at Albury Base Hospital. Albury detectives are investigating this matter and believe there was a number of people present at the time or just prior to the incident and are appealing to these people or anyone else who knows of this incident to contact Albury police on (02) 6023 9299 or via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Loretta Re has turned the story of the Uiver into a novel. Picture: CONTRIBUTED national importance.” Her book was happily signed with the Wild Colonial Company and has been released just in time for Christmas. The novel about one of Albury’s most exciting hours in the 20th Century can be found at the LibraryMuseum, Dymocks, Uiver Cafe, Beechworth Books, and other retailers. Ms Re will be at the LibraryMuseum on 13 December for a book signing.

After countless hours of dedication, assistance from a writing course, and stacks of research, Mr Re completed her writing in October 2012. She was appalled when larger publishing companies questioned the issue of featuring rural Australia in a novel. “The big companies wondered if anyone would be interested because it was set in regional Australia, and we told them it was a story of

Assault hunt Police are appealing for public assistance to help locate Michael McDonald. McDonald was charged with affray in relation to an assault which occurred in Moonee Ponds on 13 December 2013 but has failed to appear at court. A warrant has been issued for the 38-year-old’s arrest and he is believed to be frequenting the Wodonga area. Michael is described as 175cm tall, of medium build, with brown hair, brown eyes and a fair complexion. Police have released an image of McDonald in the hope that someone may be able to provide information on his whereabouts. Police also urge him to attend his nearest police station. Anyone with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www. crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Thumbs Down

A few teachers have told us their schools have pulled Rolf Harris’ iconic Aussie Christmas tune ‘Six White Boomers’ off their carol list this year. Do you think that’s the correct thing to do, or should the song stand on its own?

Family is still the centre of violence

This year’s Great Victorian Bike Ride has been a physically, mentally, and emotionally draining ride for many participants. PIcture: CONTRIBUTED

Riders won’t stop subject to a Victoria Police investigation, it would not be appropriate for us to comment at this time, Bicycle Network general manager Events Darren Allen said. Despite the tragedy early in the event, Mr Allen said the team was being spurred on by encouraging feedback from participants, including many who enjoyed exploring the Border. “People were especially impressed by the early stages of the ride, especially being so close to

ORGANISERS for this year’s Great Victorian Bike Ride have indicated the event will still be going ahead next year, despite the event being tragically marred by the death of a cyclist last Wednesday. The cyclist was killed after falling from their bicycle and being hit by a truck on the Mansfield-Whitfield Road at Barwite around 11am. “As the circumstances surrounding the crash are still

can’t confirm when the event, which pumped an estimated $280,000 into the local economy, will pass through next. “Every year the route of the RACV Great Victorian Bike Ride changes - in 2015 we’ll be touring the Goldfields region in Victoria - but that doesn’t mean we won’t be back in the border region sometime in the future, Mr Allen said. Keep it safe on water THE community is being urged to be boat safe and wear lifejackets this summer, after the tragic drowning of a Lavington man last Wednesday. The 64-year-old man, identified by local media as Roger Bradney, died after a tinnie he and his mate were fishing in overturned near

Bungowannah about 5pm. The 54 year old fisherman who was also in the boat managed to swim to a bank and raise the alarm before being treated by paramedics for a dislocated arm. The dog that was in the boat during the incident was located safe on the shore nearby.

Albury Wodonga News Weekly in September that a rise in domestic violence rates could be a positive indication that the crime is now being more regularly reported and no longer being kept a secret behind closed doors. Meanwhile, the city has seen a big drop in areas of other criminal activity in the 24 months to September 2014. Indecent assault, acts of indecency and other sexual offences dropped by 23.4 per cent while break and entering into non-dwellings dropped by 42.8 per cent. Thefts have also gone down, with theft from a motor vehicle sliding by 40.5 per cent, theft from retails stores dropping by 30.6 per cent, and stealing from a dwelling decreasing by 27.1 per cent. Sexual assault, fraud, and malicious damage to property have remained at a stable rate.

FAMILY violence continues to plague the north side of the Border, highlighted by the latest NSW crime figures released last week. Statistics from the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research shows 46.7 per cent of the 670 assaults reported to Albury police in the 12 months to September 2014 were domestic violence related. This compares to domestic violence making up a smaller 38 per cent of all assaults in the previous 12 months. The Albury trend follows Wodonga, with statistics released earlier this month from Victoria Police showing almost half of Wodonga’s assaults included family violence. Albury police have been unavailable this week to comment on the figures, but Albury Local Area Command Superintendant Beth Stirton told the

Answering the call By ERIN SOMERVILLE WHEN their principal phoned their homes on a school night, these four St Mary MacKillop College students didn’t know what to expect. Luckily, the news was wonderful. The trip of a lifetime now lies ahead for students Therese Horsfall, Catherine Bell, Bede McLaurin, and Kate Whitehead, who will be heading to Gallipoli to attend to the centenary of Anzac Dawn Service next year. While the exotic sights and culture of Turkish shores may be a far cry from the students’ small rural community of Jindera, the adventure is one they have eagerly embraced. “We couldn’t tell anyone when we found out, and that was hard,” Therese said.

The school was named earlier this year as one of 25 in the state to be drawn from a ballot to attend the centenary ceremony. The students will join 10,000 other Australians and New Zealanders at the Dawn Service commemorating the Gallipoli landings on 25 April 2015 and will also attend the Australian Service at Lone Pine later in the day. The first-hand experience of seeing the infamous battleground of World War I is very important to the students. “It will be a good insight instead of learning from a textbook,” Kate said. “It will be interesting to see where everything happened, to walk where they walked.” Almost a dozen students applied for the trip, but the four were selected for their por-

trayal of the Anzac spirit through a variety of means such as poetry, art, and relatives who had served in World War I. While the students admit they are a little nervous about the flight and the civil unrest over the Turkish-Syrian border, they wouldn’t trade the opportunity. “Our family and the school is all really proud,” Catherine said. Member for Albury, Greg Aplin announced the four students who had been selected on Wednesday. “I am proud that the NSW Government has invested $1 million to enable 100 high school students from across NSW to participate in a nine-day tour of Turkey, culminating in the Dawn Service, marking 100 years since our first Diggers landed on the shores Bede McLaurin, Catherine Bell, Kate Whitehead and Picture: ERIN SOMERVILLE Therese Horsfall. 132050 of Gallipoli in 1915,” Mr Aplin said.

Array of disabled art celebrated By ERIN SOMERVILLE THE past five months may have been a learning experience for eight emerging local artists with disabilities, but the time has been just as educational for their mentors. AlburyCity last week launched its Two Ways project, which saw the artistic partnerships work together to research and develop their practice to create a series of collaborative artworks. “In the process, I have begun to paint in a different way than I had before, which will be something I will

continue in my work from now on,” local artist Janene Castillo outlined in her work. The exhibition contains an array of art work, including embroidery, collage, multimedia art, film, oil, and watercolours. Lisa Allardyce and Paul Temple were just one pair who participated in the exhibition. While they only had four weeks to complete their work, the experience was a short yet enriching one. “We worked very hard in putting it together,” Mr Temple said.

“It makes you look outside your comfort zone.” Mr Temple is traditionally a painter and photographer, but when he discovered Ms Allardyce was fond of embroidery, he took on the challenge to create a body of work based on this. The opening of the exhibition coincided with International Day of People with a Disability, celebrating the contributions people with a disability make to Australian life. This project has been funded by the Regional Arts Fund NSW. See it now at the LibraryMuseum, entry is free.

Weaving ties in business

WHEN financial planner Sarah Rogers first moved back to her hometown of Albury after years of working away, she felt there was a gap in the market for women like her. Looking for a casual, fun, and non-intimidating way to network with women in business, Ms Rogers formed the local Women’s Business Group. A year on, the group is continuing to grow. “It’s more informal and gives women a chance to casually drop by after work for a wine or coffee,” Mr Rogers said. “It’s a great way of supporting local business.” Networking plays a major role in the group, helping weave a stronger and more comprehensive local business scene. Guest speakers also regularly attend to share ideas on a broad range of business related tips, from holistic healing to intellectual property.

Albury’s Women In Business group has helped create a stronger network between females in business on the Picture: CONTRIBUTED Border. 132161 Many participants have seen their business strengthen, taking on referrals from businesswomen they have made connections with through the group. Business aside, the group offers a lot more than business to its 30 plus members. “It’s also about getting confidence,” Ms Rogers said. And with a charity project emerging on the horizon, and

more guest speakers, it appears the days ahead are very bright for women in business in the region. Women In Business will be meeting on Tuesday evening during 2015. LOCAL performers have returned to their schools triumphantly on a high after starring in the Schools Spectacular in Sydney. Albury-based Riverina Dance Ensemble, the Riverina Central Junior Choir, and Riverina Central Senior Choir helped create magic on stage, while Albury’s Wewak Street School students shone brightly in d’Arts Ensemble in the Schools Spectacular. “Everyone is a star in the Schools Spectacular,” executive director Leadership and Learning, Jane Simmons said. “The Schools Spectacular is a unique and special entertainment event, and its success depends on everyone playing their role with energy and enthusiasm. “The creativity and high standard of performances for which the Schools Spectacular has become renowned really shone through this year.” It was a big moment for those starring in 31st annual event, with a 3600-strong cast of public school students

year’s four performances over two days took the tradition of the Schools Spectacular to a new level. “The exciting digitised lighting and graphics added to the colour and movement of performances,” Ms Simmons said. “Our young student performers and those who work behind the scenes get so much from being part of the Schools Spectacular. “It is more than the thrill of the applause of an appreciative audience they also gain a valuable lesson in contributing their all to the success of a collaborative team effort.” Carefully choreographed to this year’s theme This is Australia, the students unveiled a kaleidoscope of colour and emotions, ranging from iconic massed dances filling the entire arena through to intimate solo moments spanning the spectrum of genres range from rock and hip hop to classical and memorable movie songs.

Reset on jobs By ERIN SOMERVILLE WHEN Heidi Neumeister was made redundant a few years ago, she was left with a sense of hardship and lack of confidence. While she was lucky to find work only a month later, the experience is one she will never forget. In March, Ms Neumeister helped form the local Redundancy Support Group to assist those who are now in the same situation she was once in. Since then, the group has been accessed by a wide variety of workers who have been made redundant in the region, from those in their 20s through to 60s. They come from all sectors of employment, including transport, finance, IT, banking and health. “It varies, I’ve even been surprised by this,” Ms Neumeister said. “We hear a lot about the larger numbers of redundancies, but what we don’t hear about is the ones and twos losing their jobs, and there are probably multiples of them.” One of the biggest issue Ms Neumeister sees is employees in their forties and fifties who are concerned about finding work again. “They are feeling that the age factor is against them.” This feeling was highlighted to the Albury Wodonga News Weekly by a number of employees in the over 45 age group who were recently made redundant after Lavington’s DSI Holding’s closed its doors last month. The support group has a strong focus on the power of networking in smaller communities like Albury Wodonga, as well as building confidence, sharing experiences, and learning to access and engage in support agencies. Ms Neumieister said networking was a very powerful tool.

Heidi and Maria have seen the positives of having support during periods of redundancy. 131297 “People always have a good network around them, whether it’s their kids school, a sporting group, or through their work,” she said. “It isn’t asking for favours. “Employers don’t want to take that risk of employing the wrong person, especially with the cost of recruiting. “If they can have a person referred to them employers know, already the risk factor greatly decreases.” Ms Neurmiester said the feedback from the group’s attendees had been positive, with many already finding fulltime, casual, and contract employment. She credits a lot of positive support around her to help making the group so successful. “I’ve been well supported in this by Maria and others who kept encouraging

me and telling me this was needed and also by many people and organisations who have given up their time to present to the group,“ she said. “One of these, a former colleague and friend Kerrie Murphy who has extensive experience in recruitment, attended meetings and offered support to the members with regards to application writing, interview preparation and resumes. “The group members have also been instrumental in sharing their positive experiences and what has worked for them which allows others to consider a range of strategies to reset their lives.“ The Redundancy Support Network will be operating again in 2015 and anyone wanting to participate can contact Heidi on 0417 488 546.

wards the cello. That, and surprisingly a little power from pop music. “I was listening to Powderfinger in the car and they had a guest cellist performing with them, and I knew from them.” The Australian Music Examinations Board diploma wasn’t easily earned. Caleb had to work through eight grades over a period of years before he could sit the exam, and practises every day. He also travels to Melbourne every weekend to workshop with other musicians, and will soon be learning from London Symphony Orchestra greats over the summer as part of a limited and exclusive experience. The Scots School Albury is proud of its student’s achievement, with Co-ordinator of Co-curricular Music Paul Tasker praising the hard work of his student. “It is particularly rare at this young age,” he said. “He makes a great contribution to our musical life, and we congratulate him for his remarkable effort.”

IT IS safe to say that Caleb Murray is one highly-strung teenager. The Year Nine Scots School student is somewhat of a wonder on the cello, and has become the school’s youngest musician to have passed an Associate Diploma exam. The exam, which means he gets to tag A.Mus.A after his name, is not usually sat by students until they are in their senior high school years, or even university. But for the 15-year-old, the achievement is simply another feather in the cap of the long love affair he has had with music and the cello that started at a young age. “I started the cello when I was four years old,” he said. “I just love how it feels and how expressive the music can be.” Caleb boasts quite the musical repertoire, and can play instruments from the double bass to the bassoon. He initially started building music skills at the tender age of three on the piano, but it wasn’t until he was four and began learning on a viola that he was pulled to-

Making a mark IT has been a month of milestones at the Albury Blood Donor Centre, with two generous residents both making their 200th donation at the local service. One of Albury’s most dedicated blood donors, Bev Simpson, rolled up her sleeve for the 200th time last Tuesday to help give blood plasma. Blood plasma, the golden-coloured part of blood, involves a specialised collection process, and there is a growing demand from patients for the miracle liquid which is used to make 18 different life-saving blood products. Ms Simpson began her life as a blood donor at the age of 20 in 1961, and can still recall the first time she rolled up her sleeve for a good cause. “They had a table at the Lavington Football Club Hall asking for volunteers to sign up and donate blood so I went over and put my name down,” she said. The first time certainly did not deter Ms Simpson, who also now encourages others to donate. To celebrate her 80th donation in 1993, she started up a group of other farmers’ wives from Kergunyah to all get together, come into town for lunch, and to then donate as a group. It is a tradition the group now still carries on quarterly. Again not resting on her laurels, when the introduction of plasma-only donations came to Albury, Ms Simpson at the age of 64 again committed to donating plasma every six weeks since 2005. Albury Blood Donor Centre spokesperson Cathy Chapman said the Blood Service was encouraging regular donors to try giving plasma. “Plasma donation separates your oxygen carrying red cells from the plasma and returns those cells to you during the process, which is why you can donate more frequently.”

Janice Lynch supporting Bev Simpson making her 200th milestone Picture: CONTRIBUTED donation. 132194 The milestones continued on the day, with Albury’s regular donor Janice Lynch celebrating the same number of donations just moments after Ms Simpson. Originally from a small farming town Duranillin in south-west Western Australia, Ms Lynch was unable to be a blood donor in her younger years with the nearest Donor Centre being almost three hours away. Having been a long-time volunteer with aged care and having always wanting to become a blood donor, she was able to do so in 1995 after moving to Albury.

In less than 20 years, she has racked up an impressive 42 blood donations and 158 plasma donations. Giving blood is a great way to truly give over the Christmas season, or a generous New Year’s resolution to take up that will benefit more than just yourself. The Albury Blood Donor Centre will be closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year's Day, and open limited hours on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. ALBURYCITY and its effective collaboration with a group of dedicated volunteers has helped the community take home a win at the 2014 IMAGinE awards. The award-winning Robbins and Porter monoplane project took out the award’s museum projects category, and was created after the council launched a historic exhibition celebrating the 100-year anniversary of Albury’s local connection to aviation history in July last year. The project saw AlburyCity work in partnership with the Albury and District Historical Society to achieve an authentic and high-quality result. The teamwork paid off, with the society constructing a lifesize replica of the Robbins and Porter monoplane, which is now hung from the Albury LibraryMuseum ceiling. Recognising innovation and excellence in 500 museums, galleries and Aboriginal cultural centres across NSW, the IMAGinE industry awards acknowledge outstanding achievement of over 8000 individuals in

fostering local communities, enhancing NSW’s vibrant cultural tourism and improving visitor experiences. Museums and Galleries NSW CEO Michael Rolfe commended all recipients across the categories of Projects, Sustainability, Engagement and Individual Achievement in both paid and volunteer staffed organisations. “The winners of the 2014 IMAGinE awards highlight the exemplary work of staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to develop and present engaging and exciting programs for all facets of our community,” he said. “The awards recognise outstanding accomplishments from small volunteer run museums to large cultural institutions, and celebrate NSW’s vibrant cultural sector.” Record numbers attended the awards event at the popular artist-run initiative 107 Projects , demonstrating the awards’ growing popularity and the spirit of IMAGinE: Inspiring Museums and Galleries in Excellence.

Fighters by nature THEY’VE fought weeds on the Wodonga rail trail, forged through uncleared bushland and combated youth unemployment in the region, marking the first round of the Green Army initiative as a success. While applications to join the next round of the Green Army closed yesterday (Tuesday), Farrer MP Sussan Ley is still encouraging residents to lend their green thumb in future as the successful grassroots program continues to flourish on the Border. The Green Army, which is aimed predominately at young unemployed Australians between 17 and 24-years-old, is a federally funded environmental action program that supports local environmental and heritage conservation projects across Australia. Participants receive an allowance and gain hands-on experience, practical skills and training in environmental and conservation fields as they work towards gaining nationally recognised skills. “It was terrific our electorate had a project included in the first round and I really encourage any local community organisation, environment group or council to apply for a project in this next round,” Ms Ley said. “We’re looking for environment and conservation projects which will make a real difference to the environment, while providing meaningful training and skills for our young people.” “A project can involve restoring and protecting native habitat, weeding, revegetation, cleaning up waterways, creeks and rivers, fencing, gully remediation, preventing erosion, protecting and conserving

Successful applicants receive a team of up to nine Green Army participants, a team supervisor and project specific materials. Projects run for 20 to 26 weeks and may be carried out across urban,

regional and remote areas on public land, Indigenous-held lands, or private land where there is a clear community, environmental and heritage benefit. Those who are aged between 17 and 24 years and are an Australian citizen or permanent resident can apply. They may be a school leaver,

WELL known Albury sporting identity Brad Chalmers has taken his love for the Lauren Jackson Sports Centre to a new level. The Albury Wodonga Bandits coach has joined AlburyCity as the new Leisure Facilities Co-ordinator responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the sports centre and the Alexandra Park Athletics Complex. In announcing the appointment, Team Leader Leisure Facilities Michael Stanton said it was a great coup for AlburyCity, saying Mr Chalmers brings a broad skills base and a wealth of experience to the position. “In addition to his excellent business acumen and high level leadership skills, Brad will value add significantly to the role in a number of areas, in particular programming, relationship management, work health and safety, risk management and event attraction and co-ordination,” Mr Stanton said. Mr Chalmers has recently worked for the Australian Sports Commission as a regional co-ordinator for the past seven years and also has a strong background in human resources, operational and management roles over his career. He’s best known locally as a former Bandits player and for the past four years as head coach of the men’s team. “I am thrilled to be joining AlburyCity and to be managing a venue which has really been my second home for the past 30 years and I am excited to be bringing my experience and passion for the leisure and recreation space to the team and hopefully building my career further in the organisation,” Mr Chalmers said. “My first priorities will be on setting some direction for the forthcoming year ahead along with building relationships with the staff, key stakeholders and user groups and ensuring we assist in the smooth running of the Australian Country Cup Basketball Tournament in January and other planned events in the new year.”

For a breath-taking holiday JUST an hour and a half from Albury is a truly breath-taking holiday destination called Upper Murray Resort. Situated between Jingellic and Walwa, the resort creeps up the side of a hill across 180 acres, providing commanding views of the Upper Murray region for all who choose to stay. If you arrive in the afternoon, unpack and settle onto the front verandah, you will be taken aback by the view that lies in front of you. The beautiful valley slopes down to the mighty Murray River, which meanders gracefully into the distance. As the sun sets behind you, the last rays of sunshine rest on the mountain top - a truly spectacular sight. The clear night skies produce the Saucepan, the Southern Cross and a Milky Way so clear and bright you feel as if you could reach out and touch it. When you awaken and look out expansive windows that catch all the view, you will see this same valley, with the sun shining on the Murray, gently moving, giving the impression of twinkling fairy lights on top of the water. Upper Murray Cottages offers many options for those who like to be active and make the most of the great outdoors - canoe the Murray River, play tennis, golf, fish, bushwalk, bird watch, ride a bike, or relax in the pools. And with such a picturesque setting, of course you can have your dream wedding here. The resort can cater for your reception in the restaurant, your guests can all walk to bed afterwards and you can look back on your wedding photos in awe. Upper Murray Cottages spoil their guests for choice, with four motel rooms, four three-bedroom, double-storey cottages and 12 two-bedroom spa cottages.

Just over an 1hr out of Albury. Extensive menu, sun ďŹ lled dining room. Shady beer garden on the banks of the Mighty Murray.

Don't feel like going home? Then stay in one of the Motel rooms (wheelchair access), Two bedroom Cabin or Self contained 3 bedroon house. All with reverse cycle air conditioning. 1167464-50-14

Or you can camp in the free camping ground, over looking the Murray River with showers, gas barbeque, boat ramp and toilets available. Relax in this pretty shaded spot. Swim, fish, canoe or sit in the beer garden with a nice chilled drink.

Luxury cruise IF YOU are after a unique and amazing Australian holiday with all the luxury and ease of a European cruise, this is for you. Travel via Muswellbrook, Scone, Armidale and Glen Innes, and see the little known sights like the Standing Stones, erected to recognise the Celtic origins of the region. Pass through Warwick and Toowoomba which are perched beautifully on the edge of the Great Dividing Range. A lovely lunch awaits you at the Cobb & Co Museum before heading to Kingaroy, known for its peanuts. There will definitely be a stop at the Peanut Van and the Endeavour Biscuit Kitchen, who offer a huge range of genuine home style chutneys, jams and biscuits. From there, the day will end perfectly as you take a ferry to Fraser Island and check in at the luxurious Kingfisher Bay Resort for your three-night stay. While you relax, you will be treated to a “bush tucker talk and tasting followed by a beautiful buffet dinner. While you recharge your batteries with a wonderful night’s sleep on a beautiful island, don’t forget to recharge your cameras for the wonderful

sights of the new day. Experience migrating humpback whale watching from the comfort of the cruise boat in the calm and sheltered waters of Fraser Island. The island itself is teeming with amazing sights, Maheno Shipwreck and the clear and fresh water Lake Mackenzie, sitting perfectly off the whitest sand you will ever come across. Free leisure time to explore the resort, embark on a bush walk or opt for something more luxurious like a natural therapy beauty treatment. Whatever you choose, your day will be capped off perfectly with a beautiful sunset on the jetty, Canapes and of course bubbles. It is hard to believe that there are more wonderful things ahead when leaving the next day to visit the old world charm of Maryborough, before the modern bright lights of the Sunshine Coast. Spend two nights in the beautiful Oaks Oasis Resort, which is a heavenly part of the world. Put a tick on your bucket list as you explore the spectacular Australia Zoo. After exploring this wonderful zoo, you will take a seat in the Crocoseum

Straight talk on spine

and experience some serious wildlife action. This zoo is a must see. After an easy morning’s drive, you will arrive at the Gold Coast. You will have a very “High Tea Luncheon at the world’s second tallest residential building Skypoint. What a view while relaxing having lunch. Then a few hours of R & R before seeing the new “Australian Outback Spectacular- High Country Myths and Legends. Be mesmerised by the biggest display effects ever seen as you travel the road of yesteryear while enjoying a delicious three-course dinner. It’s breakfast with a difference this morning- “Breakfast with the Birds at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. This is a wonderful experience, however just when this holiday could not get any better, it does. You will experience the palatial and opulent Palazzo Versace Hotel “High Tea. A spectacular waterfront setting awaits you and finish with some serious retail therapy. Then cruise the Tweed River aboard the Tweed Endeavour with so many highlights, iconic sugarcane fields, and sub-tropical rainforests.

YOU might not think that a busy year sitting in front of your computer would have that much effect on your spinal health. However being hunched over a computer all year can lead to problems according to Doctor Scott Walters at Chiropractic Wellbeing. So now we all are about to have a bit of down-time Dr Scott suggests it’s the perfect time to have a check up. Chiropractic Wellbeing will be closed between (and including) Christmas and New Year’s but will be open other than that. “With Christmas rapidly approaching, many of us traveling and rushing around, maybe it’s time for a neurostructural check up soon so you can enjoy the best the holidays have to bring, Dr Scott said. He said the big problem is that most of us spend a lot of our year hunched over at the computer putting a lot of pressure on our spine and neck. “This can lead to structural problems that can begin to be more permanent if you don’t look after them, he said. He said holiday time when we are away from our desks and resting is the perfect time to come along and have that check up. You can find Chiropractic Wellbeing at Shop 1, 826 David Street, Albury, or phone (02) 6023 1222.

IN A world obsessed by media, ‘Nightcrawler’ is a poignant satire that is extremely powerful in reflecting the desensitised culture we’re rapidly becoming. The film introduces us to Lou Bloom (Jake Gyllenhaal), struggling to find work post-GFC, before haphazardly exploring a career as a nightcrawler - a freelance cameraman who follows Los Angeles police scanners to film the bloodiest and most graphic crimes of the night. The badder the crime, the better his pay cheque. Bloom’s emerging sociopathic and apathetic characteristics allow him to get up way too close and personal with casualities, giving him his break to provide for bloodthirsty audiences. As his career takes momentum, he hires an assistant, and begins his domination of night news footage. When the stories just aren’t good enough, Bloom goes to shocking lengths to bag a great scoop and make non-negotiable deals with one of the city’s leading news directors

Nina (Rene Russo). This film is surprisingly brilliant, and tells a captivating story while reflecting society’s high demand for desensitised, shock-value media coverage that is becoming so recognisable in this day and age. Gyllenhaal gives one of the performances of his career as the creepy, emotionless

Bloom, and while his character may be a little too calculated and two-dimensional, he is consistent and drives the film. Renee Russo also delivers one of her strongest on-screen roles in years. The satire may be a little over-blown, but this dark, menacing, and crazed film is a great way to start the summer, and totally underrated.

The Star Bar would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Safe New Year.

Albury Wodonga

Time to stop looking

4 Georgina Street, Wodonga

WITH views and space like these, you won’t want to look anywhere else. This four-bedroom home is perched in the tidy and friendly neighbourhood in Wodonga’s Yarralumla Rise, overlooking sweeping views across Albury Wodonga. Architecturally designed with quality finishes and innovative contemporary style, there is no better place to sit up and watch the world go by. The spacious living/dining/ kitchen area is extremely generous in room, and offers firstclass views over the valley. The gourmet kitchen is very modern, and comes with high benchtops, a five-top burner gas stove, and a huge walk-in pantry. There are also plenty of cupboards to keep everything tucked away. When the open spaces get a little too much and you yearn for some cosy and private time, a smaller lounge area or theatre room that can be shut off from the rest of the home provides a perfect and comfortable sanctuary. The three double bedrooms are modern and light, and come with smaller walk-in wardrobes and built-in wardrobes. The master suite is the real treat of the home.

Local Sport Tidy finish for St Pat’s By JAMES MCNEIL SAINT Patrick’s survived a late scare from Belvoir to record a tight victory at Xavier Oval in what was a mixed bag of results in round eight of Cricket Albury Wodonga Provincial cricket. Having posted 9/266 last week most would have thought St Patrick’s were outright favorites to cruise to victory. At 5/209 it was an evenly balanced game that could have gone either way. Glen Vassallo (48) got Belvoir off to a great start but was run out two shy of his half-century. A handy 53 from John Spencer and 36 from coach Mick Russell got the Eagles within sight of victory. Belvoir then proceeded to lose their last five wickets for only 46 runs. Heath Naughton was the best for St Patrick’s with 5/56 off 21 overs and was well supported by Kane Arendarcikas with 2/61 off 24 overs with the two bowling well over half the allotted St Patrick’s overs. Riding on the back of a double century from Torquil McKillop, Tallangatta were keen to strike early and put Wodonga Raiders on the back foot at Rowen Park. Strike early they did and Tallangatta, through the efforts of their opening bowlers Sam Stephens (3/14) and James Weighell (4/12), had Wodonga Raiders all out for 69 in their first innings. Tim Weilandt was the only Raider who made it to double figures with 40 valuable runs. Tallangatta wasted no time in sending Raiders back in for their second innings with Wodonga Raiders ending up 3/83 from their 23 overs with Josh Bousfield picking up two wickets. A huge win for Tallangatta who are starting to hit their straps and are fast becoming a team to be wary of. Lavington Panthers started the morning only requiring under 40 runs for victory at Bunton Park. A.B. Mackinlay top scored for the Panthers with 43 with Josh Jones (31) and Tom Hargreave (25) taking the Panthers to 145 in total. Robert Hartnett, Brandon Purtell and Daniel Athanitis all took three wickets for North Albury but it was not enough for the Hoppers as Lavington passed North Albury’s score, five wickets down. Lavington then had 48 overs to face out and ended up losing nine wickets for 140 runs.

Neil Smith.

All the action of the Big Bash with Liam Tobin, Connor Smith and James Tonkin. David Farrell was a lone hand up top with 59 while Matt Kirkwood was 22 not out at the end of play. Young left arm spinner Will Heriot, who comes from Holbrook originally, ended up with the excellent figures of 5/14 off 11 overs and will be one to watch in the future. At Alexandra Park Albury were faced with the tough ask of chasing 308 against East Albury. The day started well for East Albury with young quick Christopher Bridle taking early wickets and reduc-

ing Albury to 5/30. Bridle ended up with the handy figures of 5/38 off 13 overs while Sean Barrett and James McNeil both ended up with two wickets. Kade Brown was the only batsmen for Albury to pass 20, with 44 runs. Having bowled Albury out for 144, East Albury then had 17 overs to face and ended up 4/87 with Caleb Barras (23) and James McNeil (34) the top scorers while Grant Wells took two wickets. Wodonga recorded a convincing

victory against New City at Urana road oval. Chasing only 144 the Bulldogs lost early wickets on day two but were saved through a handy dig from Cooper Garoni (67 not out) and a sparkling innings from Dan Dixon (132 not out). Dixon came in at number six and finished the day not out with Wodonga recording 7/302. Darcy I’Anson was the best for New City with the ball with 3/56 from 19 overs. In the CAW Twenty20 Big Bash, the three round games have been played and the finalists have been decided.

PEDAL power will be put to great use on Saturday, as dozens of cyclists hit the Lavington velodrome for a great local cause. The fifth annual Lavington Charity Cycling Carnival will see cyclists from as far as Wangaratta and Wagga sweat in up to 18 different races, all while raising funds for Carevan Foundation. Organiser Brendan Washington is pleased at how the annual event has evolved in the past five years. “We first organised this as a fund-raiser for the Leukaemia Foundation,” he said. “We have kept it going and decided to keep (the charities) local.” Mr Washington said the interest in track cycling was increasing in the area. “There’s always more people riding bikes, and it’s a good event that we also get a lot of kids to.”

The charity event will also include the Peter Benton Memorial Juvenile Handicap Final, which has been held for over 30 years. Carevan CEO Di Mant is grateful that the event will allow the organisation to continue its good work for the local homeless population. “The cyclists have given us a great amount of support, and we really appreciate that support and any money raised,” she said. The charity is currently dishing up 450 meals a week to help local residents in need, and funds raised will continue to help Carevan continue that work. The Lavington Charity Cycling Carnival will be held on Saturday, 13 December at the Lavington Veldrome, and entry is a gold coin donation. Prize money is $1000 for juniors and seniors. Spectators are warmly welcomed, and encouraged to bring a chair, picnic rug and refreshments. The infield will be open for seating. Gates open at 4pm, warm-up from 4.30pm.

With three sides sitting on two wins, it will be the Tradelink Hurricanes taking on the Linde Reds in the final on 9 January. In representative cricket, the senior side will be taking on Wagga at Robertson oval on 14 December with the winner making it through to the finals to be played in Wollongong in late December. This coming weekend is the start of the final round before Christmas with several teams looking to continue their momentum into the mid-season rest period.
