HAVE you heard about the Macclesfield Christmas display?

Phil and Fiona Spencer have been decorating their Macclesfield home at Christmas for the last four years to raise funds for the local volunteer CFA. The lights and decorations have become a spectacle around the area and beyond, and Phil and Fiona are expecting an unprecedented number of visitors for what will be the last Christmas display. This year, it will feature two life-sized nutcrackers and a gingerbread house for guests to explore and enjoy as well as the annual miniature village display.

For younger kids, there will be a train set and soft toys, ensuring Christmas cheer for all ages.

Fiona says the Christmas display is a year-long project, with planning and preparation beginning on Christmas night last year. “We spend months creating a Christmas wonderland for everyone to enjoy. “Every year there is something different. We have loved planning, designing and creating the Christmas display every year.�

The Spencers’ home has become renowned within the local community and a favourite on the Melbourne Christmas light circuit. Fiona says the planning and construction of the display is their gift to the hills community. “We love seeing the joy it brings to people, it’s just a really nice thing to do at Christmas time.�

Macclesfield CFA Captain Sharon Merritt said the Christmas display raised essential funds that would go towards buying the station a brigadeowned tanker two. The new tanker would have the capacity to transport between 2000 and 3000 litres of water and could prove vital in an area where water supplies were limited. “The Christmas display will again be a major fund-raiser for the brigade and bring us closer to buying a new tanker for the CFA.

“It’s a great team-building exercise - we’ve had students that would cover their faces in hair and not speak a word and then months later there has been a complete change in

attitude, they have friends, they are involved,” Mr Burgess said.

“It really has worked wonders.”

Student Marty said the garden looked “pretty bad” before they got involved in the program.

“It needed a lot of work, but it’s been good, I’ve made friends with people I never thought I had anything in common with,” he said.

CARDINIA Shire Council will hold its December monthly meeting in Emerald.

Continuing a pledge to host meetings at venues around the shire, council will hold its final meeting for the year at Gemco Theatre on Monday 15 December.

The meeting begins at 7pm and is open to the public.

Mayor Leticia Wilmot said she was proud to be chairing the meeting at ‘home’ in Ranges Ward and issued a warm welcome to residents to attend.

“Council has made a commitment to holding its meetings not just at the civic centre in Officer but at locations around Cardinia Shire.

“We met at Beaconsfield last December, we met at Nar Nar Goon in March and we will meet at Kooweerup next March and Pakenham in June 2015.

“My fellow Ranges Ward councillors Brett Owen and Tania Baxter and I, along with our other council colleagues and officers, hope to see a good turnout at the Emerald meeting.

“The feedback we have

had from residents who attended the previous meetings has been very positive and I encourage people from Emerald and district to come along to the Gemco Theatre next Monday night.”

Caught red-handed TWO men have been charged with drug trafficking, after police allegedly saw a drug deal take place in Cockatoo.

Leading Senior Constable Richard Murphy said police saw the drug deal take place and arrested one male, before arresting two others down the road for trafficking ice (methamphetamine).

THE kids at Kallista Primary School were especially excited for lunchtime this week after the opening of a brandnew playground.

The Parents and Friends Association raised around $20,000 over the period of two years to build the play area, which incorporates natural and upcycled equipment.

School principal Christine Finighan said that the playground was designed to tie in with the inquiry and playbased learning program at the school.

“It’s all about encouraging kids to take risks and challenge themselves physically while in a safe environment.

“We wanted to provide a place for them to use both their fine and gross motor skills and of course have lots of fun.”

A LOCAL policeman has been suspended with pay after he was arrested following an incident in Mansfield last month. The senior constable, from the Eastern Region and believed to be based at Belgrave, was interviewed on 23 November in relation to assault allegations and released pending summons. Professional Standards Command officers are investigating the incident.

A Victoria Police spokesperson said it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time, considering the investigation was ongoing.

“Any offences alleged to have been committed by police members are taken extremely seriously and investigated thoroughly,” she said.

Perpetrators are pathetic WHITE Ribbon is the world’s largest male-led movement to end men’s violence against women; it is Australia’s only national, male-led campaign to end men’s violence against women.

The vision of the campaign is that all women live in safety, free from all forms of men’s violence.

Sadly, we in the Yarra Ranges are not immune; violence against women is also a serious problem here frequently leading to serious injury, disability, loss of earnings, poverty and homelessness.

White Ribbon Day, held annually on 25 November signals the start of the 16 days of Activism to Stop Violence against Women which ends on Human Rights Day (10 December).

However, the campaign to stop violence against women runs all year and is evident across the community through advertising, social media and marketing campaigns such as Uncover Secrets, community events and White Ribbon Night in July.

The campaign works through initiatives to educate, making more people aware with programs involving youth, schools, workplaces and the broader community.

Intimate partner violence is the most common type of violence against women, and according to the 2013 World Health Organisation report affects 30 per cent of women worldwide.

New frontiers on fair food

By MARLENE MILLOTT A FEAST for the eyes is on the menu for the Dandenong Ranges as The Hills Food Frontier looks to screen a new fair food film.

The documentary Fair Food follows the work of Australian farmers, social entrepreneurs and communities pioneering new approaches to food productions, marketing and distribution.

Released this December, the film was produced by the national fair food campaigner the Australian Food Sovereignty Alliance (AFSA) and food publishers and facilitators the Field Institute.

The Hills Food Frontier hopes to bring the film to the Dandenong Ranges in February or March next year.

The appetite for a fairer food culture was demonstrated when a crowd-funding campaign to raise money to produce the film went beyond its target. The fund-raising target of $25,000 was exceeded by $7000 within six weeks of launching the appeal. ASFA National co-ordinator Dr Nick Rose said the film is the first feature-length documentary in Australia that tells the story of fair food pioneers.

“The film features outstanding individuals like Victorian free range pig farmer Tammi Jonas ...

ABC gardening guru Costa Georgiadis, and Australian rugby union star and fair food advocate David Pocock,” Dr Rose said.

The film aims to address issues in Australian food culture. Supermarket domination of the grocery market, dietary-related illnesses as a result of high junk food intake, and the struggles of Australian farmers are all highlighted in Fair Food.

The Hills Food Frontier co-founder Shakti McLaren hopes the film will raise awareness about the topics the film addresses.

“We live in a society that is dominated by two large supermarket chains... they don’t give farmers a fair price... Farms are closing and selling out,” she said.

Ms McLaren hopes the film will educate people and encourage them to get involved in their Good Food Buying Group.

About 100 kids entered the colouring competition, but six mini Monets stood out to Dandenong to judge Rod Stebbing from the Dandenong Ranges Fire Brigades Group.

The Prep-Grade 1 winner was Curtis Apse from Mt Dandenong Primary School, and the runner-up was Riley Lazdins from The Patch Primary School.

Katelyn Boley from Olinda Primary School won the Grade 2-3 section, with Leila Fennessy from Mt Dandenong Primary School as the runner-up.

In the Grade 4,5,6 competition, Riley Van Berendonck from Olinda Primary School was the winner, and Maeve Leonard from Mt Dandenong Primary School claimed the runner-up prize.

Kids were encouraged to colour in pictures of fire safety cartoon characters and scenes of bushfires and bushfire prevention.

“We had a huge amount of kids participating at the craft and colouring area,” Ms Freestone-Davis said.

The winners and runners-up of the competition received fun and crafty prizes including a scarf-making kit, a volcano kit, and origami kit.

The colouring competition was part of a family information day held by the Ridge Top Brigades ahead of the bushfire season.

It aimed to raise awareness about bushfire safety and prevention in a fun and accessible setting.

many women it is a season of fear not joy. Victims of all ages, genders and ethnic backgrounds need to know that domestic violence is completely unacceptable and that community support is available. When victims do seek help, we need to open our doors to them.

The facts paint a gloomy picture but there is hope, because research also shows that building greater equality and respect between men and women can reduce attitudes that support violence.

As more and more women are reporting the offences, police are able to take action removing the offender from the family home. There is still a long way to go and we must all be involved and say NO to domestic violence.

New mayor

Crime is up and down

By JESSE GRAHAM THE Yarra Ranges has a new mayor for the coming year after Billanook Ward councillor Maria McCarthy scraped in by a single vote.

Meanwhile, the other mayoral nominee has criticised a lack of representation in the Dandenongs and said the hills wards had been without a mayor for 15 years.

Cr McCarthy was elected at a special Yarra Ranges Council meeting on 2 December, winning with five votes against Streeton Ward councillor Noel Cliff. Both of the mayoral nominees made their case to other councillors and to about 20 people watching on in the public gallery.

Cr McCarthy said her work under former mayor Fiona McAllister in the last year which included a stint as acting mayor - had prepared her for the top job.

“I’ve worked with Cr McAllister for the last 12 months as her deputy mayor and have learnt a lot through her guidance,” she said.

“Through that, I feel I am well-placed and suited to represent Yarra Ranges Council as the mayor.”

Meanwhile, Cr Cliff said that wards across the Dandenong Ranges had not been represented in the mayoral role since 1999.

CRIME has dropped across the board in the Cardinia area and risen drastically in the Yarra Ranges, according to the latest policing statiastics, with drugs remaining one of the biggest issues in both areas.

But the inspectors in both areas have attributed their results to a strong policing presence, with more people charged under key areas or deterred from crime in others.

On Monday 1 December, Victoria Police released its latest crime statistics, comparing the period of October 2013 to September 2014 with the previous year.

In Yarra Ranges, crime rates rose 17.3 per cent overall, with 7216 offences compared to 6151 during the period, while crime dropped by 4.8 per cent in Cardinia.

The largest policing areas in the Yarra Ranges were drug offences, which rose 22.4 per cent, family violence assaults, which rose by 14.5 per cent and theft from motor vehicles, which rose by 33.3 per cent between the time periods.

Cardinia’s Police Service Area saw statistics drop for almost every crime area, with the largest decreases recorded for non-residential burglaries (30.8 per cent) and theft from motor vehicles (24.4 per cent).

The only crime increase was for drug offences, which rose by 50 per cent with 363 offences, compared to 242 in the year before.

Yarra Ranges Inspector

Peter Wheeler told the Mail that crime statistics are police-generated, meaning that the rise in statistics pointed to more people being charged for crimes, not necessarily that more crime was occurring.

This was echoed by Cardinia Inspector Shane Smith, who said the area’s significant rise in drug offences was due to more people being caught and charged.

“That comes mainly from police activity in the area the more out and about we are, the more likely we are to come across drug offences,” Insp Smith said.

“While we can and should celebrate our successes, we need to be mindful of the challenges our community still faces, particularly in the areas of family violence and road trauma.”

Family violence rates dropped by 11.7 per cent in Cardinia between the two periods, which Insp Smith attributed to a pro-active police response and awareness-raising programs, as well as natural fluctuations in reporting.

“With the focus we have on family violence - there is a strong focus in our whole division - we expect to see some decrease in the long-term,” Insp Smith said.

“We’d like to see a longterm stable decrease (in statistics).”

Meanwhile, Insp Wheeler said the increase in family violence statistics in the Yarra Ranges was a result of people

being more comfortable in reporting abuse and violence to the police.

“There’s not the same stigma attached to it - there’re not the same concerns that there won’t be any actions taken in response to their concerns,” Insp Wheeler said.

He said that police could be contacted about family violence before a crime was committed and that officers could then refer people on to agencies or help to resolve a situation before it turned violent.

Insp Wheeler urged people to not store valuables in their cars and to make sure they lock their doors, citing theft from motor vehicles as one of the most preventable crime statistics.

“It’s a crime of opportunity - a lot of offenders scour car parks and if they look in a vehicle and see a laptop, camera, mobile phone, wallet or loose change, the opportunity is there for them to break a window ... and commit the theft,” he said.

“If that property wasn’t in the car to start with, there’s a higher chance that the person will walk past and continue on.”

Insp Smith said that Pakenham was the site of a new trial program, called Help Yourself, which provided tips for residents to protect theirs homes and vehicles from theft.

Toast raised to young speakers

By KATH GANNAWAY WHATEVER age, most people will admit to having a few butterflies in the tummy when they get up to speak before an audience.

The Patch Primary School’s grade six students had those butterflies well and truly in hand at their speech night on Monday, 24 December.

For the past eight years grade six students have been coached in public speaking as part of the Taming the Butterflies Program presented by Nola Sharp and Bill Farman from Lilydale Toastmasters Club.

The students presented a Toastmasters-style program with students taking on all the roles involved in running a tight and entertaining meeting, including toastmaster, grammarian, timekeeper, evaluators and speakers.

The students presented some brilliant speeches to an appreciative audience, showing the skills and confidence they have gained over the seven week program.

Teacher Angie Martin said it’s a program that benefits every student.

“It works in so many ways. Some students just want to get up and speak but there are so many other roles.

“It teaches them to listen, how to give constructive and positive feedback, time-keeping, impromptu speaking and how to collect their thoughts.

“It’s a brilliant skill for life, a skill we all need as communicators and Bill and Nola as facilitators are brilliant, bringing out the best in the children,” Ms Martin said.

Nola and Bill, are veteran Toastmasters and passionate ambassadors for the organisation which has clubs in Kallista, Lilydale, Healesville, Knox and Wandin.

Presenting awards on the night, Nola spoke of the individual achievements of the students, some of whom had a natural bent for speaking, and others who overcame significant hurdles to take an active role in the program.

“It is wonderful to see these young people achieving so much and developing the confidence to not only speak, but to take on leadership roles,” she said.

Bill and Nola also deliver the program at Mount Lilydale College.

SES in quest for wheels WITH the fire season fast approaching, the Rotary Club of Emerald and District has joined the campaign to raise funds for an important new vehicle for the local SES unit.

Emerald SES’s current four wheel drive vehicle cannot carry essential equipment which uses fuel, such as chainsaws, because it is an enclosed vehicle and does not have sufficient ventilation.

Therefore a new vehicle is badly needed.

The unit’s other truck also needs to be replaced.

The unit is tasked with ensuring local roads are kept clear in summer for the community to evacuate and for the CFA and other agencies to attend fires.

A new 4WD vehicle, which is estimated to require up to $50,000 to get on the road, would be well-equipped for fire support and clearing trees from roads.

It would be able to respond more quickly than the unit’s current vehicles.

And with continuously changing safety requirements to abide by, and money tight, Captain Ben Owen said his team had

begun fund-raising for a new vehicle.

“The new vehicle will be a rescue support vehicle which can carry more life-saving rescue equipment than the current vehicle,” he said.

A total of $5752 has been raised so far.

Touring Emerald SES facilities, Greens candidate for Gembrook Michael Schilling said the local unit deserved more support, given that it responded to more than 950 callouts each year.

“The Emerald SES do a fantastic job at keeping the community safe in a time of need.

“It is critical the community and government get behind the SES to ensure they can continue to carry out their great work,” he said.

“They have well and truly outgrown their facility and whoever wins the election will need to immediately help redevelop the ‘shed’ to ensure the safety of our community.”

Aldi brims with ‘confidence’

By KATH GANNAWAY BROTHERS James and Tom Sands were among Monbulk residents who made their way through an archway of balloons to be the first to shop at the town’s new Aldi store last week.

The boys went in on a mission - to be the first to go through the checkouts - and declared mission accomplished as James lined up with his Snickers bar and Tom decided it was time for a KitKat. The boys were among more than 1800 shoppers who took the opportunity to look over the new store and grab some bargains on opening day, Wednesday 3 December.

Speaking on behalf of Yarra Ranges Council, Cr Damian Callanan said it was great to see a new store opening up and added that it was a mark of confidence in the town.

Store manager Angela Thompson-Irwin officially cut the ribbon at 8.30am to declare the store open and allow the early-bird shoppers through.

The store is the fourth in Yarra Ranges, providing 13 jobs in Monbulk.

An Aldi Australia spokesman said the company would continue to look for new store opportunities in the region, but had no immediate plans for any further store developments.

Burning issues openly aired

By MARLENE MILLOTT THERE is community concern over the impact that open air burning has on human health in the Dandenong Ranges.

Olinda resident David Chauval is concerned about the exposure of Dandenong Ranges residents to harmful carcinogens when they breathe in smoke that comes from open air burning. He cites World Health Organisation findings that reveal a connection between air pollution and cancer-causing substances.

Mr Chauval in particular cites a WHO report from last year that found sufficient evidence that outdoor pollution causes lung cancer.

“The air we breathe has become polluted with a mixture of cancer-causing substances,” Dr Kurt Straif, from the WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer said in a statement.

“We now know that outdoor air pollution is not only a major risk to health in general, but also a leading environmental cause of cancer deaths.”

Mr Chauval asked the Dandenong Ranges community to consider current open air burning practices and question whether they were safe.

“How many of you have suffered from, or are suffering from, serious medical conditions such as stroke or cancer that may be, based on the WHO’s findings, linked to outdoor air pollution?

“Frankly, no one should have the right to unreasonably pollute the air that we all have to breath.”

In addition to health concerns, Mr Chauval is worried about the impact on tourism in the area. He believes efforts to promote the Dandenong Ranges as a beautiful destination for dining and recreation is under threat.

“These efforts are thwarted when there are heavy layers of noxious smoke that affect the views and smell like ‘eau de bushfire’.”

Mr Chauval, who has been lobbying the local council to change the Open Air Burning Law, said he was told there were no plans to change the law.

He is calling on the local council to strengthen regulations on open air burning, and look into alternative measures of bushfire fuel reduction.

Current Yarra Ranges Council restrict the days and conditions in which residents that live in residential bushland and rural areas can burn off.

Residents in urban areas are not permitted to burn off at all.

VOLUNTEERING in Knox became more accessible last week after the launch of a new program.

The Volunteer for Knox Resource centre works to increase volunteering opportunities for individuals and organisations in Knox.

Co-inciding with the United Nations’ International Volunteer Day, the new program was launched at Coonara Community House on Friday in front of around 70 people.

Councillor John Mortimore attended the launch on behalf of mayor Peter Lockwood, and told those present that volunteering was the lifeblood of any community.

“Society could not function without the work of volunteers, and it’s important to recognise their contribution to organisations within our community.

“Today we celebrate and thank volunteers and the great work that they do.”

The event was attended by recently re-elected Ferntree Gully MP Nick Wakeling, as well as representatives from many volunteer organisations around Knox. Cr Mortimore planted a tree outside the House to commemorate the event.

Volunteer for Knox is a shared initiative between the five Knox Neighbourhood Houses - Coonara Community House, The Basin Community

House, Rowville Neighbourhood Learning Centre, Mountain District Learning Centre and Orana Neighbourhood House.

Cops are charging ahead

By JESSE GRAHAM THE YARRA Ranges Highway Patrol has issued a firm warning to drivers around the valley this summer - do the wrong thing and you’ll get caught.

With the holiday season drawing closer, the Highway Patrol is ramping up its Summer Stay campaign, which features a number of road operations targeting certain bad driving behaviours.

Sergeant John Morgan told the Mail that the first operation of the summer season - Operation RAID (Remove All Impaired Drivers) wrapped up on Sunday 7 December.

The operation began on 14 November and had a strong focus on catching drunk drivers - Sgt Morgan said that as of Thursday 4 December, police had conducted 16,716 preliminary breath tests.

As a result of those tests, 28 people in the Yarra Ranges were charged with drink driving, and 753 offences - including mobile phone use, speeding and not wearing seatbelts - were recorded.

“Obviously, we’re putting in a really big effort - we’re coming ninth out of the state for enforcement and third out of the state for the number of preliminary breath tests we’ve conducted,” Sgt Morgan said.

As of yesterday (Monday 8 December), the Highway Patrol began Operation Breakup, which is aimed at reducing road trauma around the time of Christmas break-up parties around the state.

Drunk drivers, drivers using their phones or driving without a seatbelt will all be in the crosshairs in Operation Breakup, which is immediately

followed by Operation Crossroads from 23 December-3 January 2015.

“That’s over the official holiday toll period and, again, it’ll be a real focus on road safety and speeding as people take off on their holidays,” Sgt Morgan said.

The final operation for the Summer Stay campaign is the one-day Operation Fresh Start, which will address industrial workers on their first day back to work for the year.

While the state-wide operations are taking place, Sgt Morgan said police would be actively working in a number of other operations, such as Pincer.

During Operation Pincer, which will be run until May 2015, police will have marked and unmarked vehicles from around the Yarra Ranges, Knox and Maroondah Police Service Areas (PSAs) patrolling back roads for dan-

gerous motorcycle riding.

Meanwhile, drivers who flaunt the law on the Black Spur or the Reefton Spur will be falling into the hands of police officers running Operation Surreptitious, who will specifically target those areas until May. “Obviously, drivers will be booked as well if they’re speeding.”

Sgt Morgan said police would have a heavy focus on dangerous driver behaviour, including low-level speeding.

He said that Traffic Accident Commission (TAC) information showed that the majority of crashes in the Yarra Ranges took place on 60 and 70 kilometres-per-hour speed zoned roads, mostly on weekends and between 8am-6pm.

To address this, officers will be taking part in Operation Step and targeting speeding on these slower-zoned

roads, particularly drivers who regularly speed by small amounts.

“We’ll have guys out there - not only Highway Patrol members but allstation involvement as well, looking at low-level speeding,” Sgt Morgan said.

“You will be booked even if you’re doing under 10km/h over.”

Meanwhile, Operation Osborn will seek out drug-affected drivers and Operation Watchful will use plain-clothed police officers to address one of the biggest distractions- mobile phones.

“What we got told by the TAC and our own intelligence was that we were having a lot of rear-end collisions,” Sgt Morgan said.

“They’re usually caused because drivers are distracted, and the number one cause of driver distraction is mobile phones.”

Special guests canvass support for disability

By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM THREE special guests captivated students at Mount Evelyn Primary School assembly last week.

To mark the UN’s International Day for People with Disabilities, three residents from Melba Support Services visited the school to present a unique artwork.

Students worked with Melba residents to paint a series of three artworks created using wheelchairs to spread paint across the canvas.

Melba’s Executive Office manager, Kirsten Filmer, said that the project aimed to teach the community about interacting with people with profound and multiple disabilities.

“Through this project, the students gain positive attitudes about disability and an increased awareness towards human rights.

“This activity was part of Melba’s ongoing commitment to helping the community interact with people with disabilities, particularly those unable to communicate through speech,” Ms Filmer said.

Entitled ‘We’re all different: Isn’t that great?”, the project was born out of Melba’s 2012 quality accreditation process that identified a need to keep the public informed about disability issues.

Ms Filmer said that primary school children were an important age group to engage.

“We find that people often struggle interacting with our residents who are unable to speak.

“The idea of this program was showing the children involved how to approach people with disabilities, and providing opportunities to engage with our residents,” she said.

The project was funded by council’s community grants program and involved students from Year 3 to Year 6 as well as four people supported by Melba.

The two groups first met in October for an open and friendly dialogue based around promoting social inclusion before creating the artwork on a later visit.

Stars come out to play

Carols echoing through the hills

By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM THERE were stars in the sky and on the stage at the Knox Carols by Candlelight held over the weekend.

Katie Noonan, Fatai V, Daniel Kelaart and Emma Pask joined the Australian Navy Band and local dancers at the Wally Tew Reserve in Ferntree Gully on Saturday night.

The rain held out on a balmy evening as hundreds from the Knox area flocked to join in singing Christmas favourites.

There were free kids activities and plenty of food available as dusk turned to night as crowds sang along to traditional carols including Silent Night, Away in a Manger and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.

The fireworks finale rounded out a night enjoyed by all with the CFA on hand to ensure that everything ran safely and smoothly. Promoted as Knox Council’s flagship ‘Access and Inclusion’ event of the year, the event co-incided with the International Day of People with a Disability and the council provided an Auslan interpreter as well as large print on the screen during the carols.

Hampers bring relief

By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM THIS Christmas will be a bit merrier for some hills residents thanks to local generosity.

Dandenong Ranges Emergency Relief Service is again running the “Christmas in the Hills” appeal to collect food, gifts, vouchers and money for people in need.

Monbulk MP James Merlino launched the appeal and is encouraging the Dandenong Ranges community to donate.

“There are many people in our community who at this time, rather than feel joy, will experience loneliness, financial hardship and personal difficulties.

“A festive food hamper would make a huge difference for families and individuals in need.”

Involved with the hamper appeal for the last four years, Mr Merlino met with volunteers from the centre and donated a number of hampers to the collection.

The appeal is gathering non-perishable food items including tinned ham, tuna and vegetables, biscuits, long-life milk and custard, fruit cake, pudding, chocolate, tea and coffee. Gifts, vouchers and money are also being collected to make Christmas a little brighter for those in need. The hampers will be assembled by the relief service and distributed in time for Christmas.

All donations can be dropped off at Dandenong Ranges Emergency Relief Service, 1632 Burwood Highway, Belgrave, by the end of this week.

Kids share the care CHILDREN at local primary schools will be crafting for a cause this Christmas when their cards are sent to families in need.

Students at the outside school hours program at St Thomas More Primary School and Upwey South Primary School will participate in the ‘Basket Brigade’ project, an initiative that provides disadvantaged families with packages at Christmas.

Extend After School Care runs the outside school hours program at the two schools and will this year be partnering with the Magic Moments foundation to involve their students in the Christmas campaign.

Darren Stevenson, managing director of Extend, said that cards made by the students would bring an extra bit of joy to families doing it tough this year.

“Children attending the two Extend After School Care services are helping to create beautiful hand-made Christmas cards to accompany some of the hundreds of baskets that will be delivered around Australia this year.”

GEMBROOK’S Main Street was alive and pumping recently as the Kids Fun Run with Thomas returned to town.

Held at the Puffing Billy railway station for the past 13 years, the event started from modest beginnings with a group of Emerald Rotarians trying to find a way to raise money for children in need.

Now it’s a booming hills institution and one of its biggest fund-raisers, raising over $400,000 for the paediatric ward at the Angliss Hospital and the fight against polio - just to name a couple of causes.

This year all the money raised went to CPEC - the Cerebral Palsy Education Centre in Glen Waverley.

The day itself involved children running in their age groups against Thomas the Tank Engine, free mystery bags, prizes and plenty of food and drink, all among the hustle and bustle of the Gembrook Market.

But following on from last year’s event, there was another element to the fun run this year: kids raising money for kids.

Young Xavier Chapple and his sister Elisha raised over $1300 between them for CPEC, while three-year-old Harrison Elliott raised a staggering amount - in excess of $1500 - for the centre and his friend Lyla, who suffers from cerebral palsy.

Harrison demanded his parents ask everyone he knew - family and friends - for donations, and he even produced online videos for the cause over a four-week stretch.

This year, the ‘children raising funds for children’ aspect of the event alone raised over $9500 - a truly astonishing achievement.

During the 2014 event 21 children raised over $150 each.

When organisers drew a line under the fund-raising competition, four individual fund-raisers raised nearly $5000 between them.

VICTORIAN Australian of the Year and family violence campaigner Rosie Batty has spoken out in support of the Yarra Ranges branch of the Eastern Community Legal Centre (ECLC), which is facing closure following federal cuts to funding.

Ms Batty said it was “disappointing” to hear about the cuts to the Yarra Ranges ECLC, which is located in Healesville.

She said that accessible legal services were vital to vulnerable people in the community.

“Access to legal support and advice has to be accessible to the everyday person in the local communities because ultimately professional legal systems are just outside a lot of people’s reach,” she said.

Ms Batty said these services were not available to her after her son was murdered by his father at a cricket ground in February this year.

“My journey was a very

isolating journey, a very overwhelming journey and the legal avenue was really not available to me ... I didn’t have bucket loads of money to spend on legal representation,” she said.

She urged local politicians to make themselves aware of the importance of the ECLC’s work.

“It’s important for the local politicians ... to actually inform themselves about what they do at those centres and why they are really important.

If they aren’t aware of the need then they should inform themselves.”

The Yarra Ranges Centre opened in February this year, after the Labor Government announced Commonwealth funding of $350,000 over four years. The Abbott Government has since announced that funding will be withdrawn from July 2015.

Ahead of the State Election, Eildon Labor candidate Sally Brennan had pledged funding

to keep the centre open.

The Coalition had not announced any plans for the Eildon electorate, but was in discussion about strategies to support victims of family violence.

At the ECLC’s annual general meeting on Tuesday 18 November, the organisation reported that since opening in February, the Yarra Ranges Centre had helped over 300 people.

Of these, 47 per cent were matters regarding family violence.

ECLC CEO Michael Smith said the organisation would do all it could to keep the Yarra Ranges centre open.

“There are many clients who have said without the local centre in their local community they would not have come forward for help, he said.

“We are determined to keep the centre open and we are doing all we can to make that happen.”

Tennis teen having a ball

By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM JACKSON Bruce-Tennant is a tennis ace with a bright future and a busy summer ahead.

The Belgrave Heights Christian School student has been selected as a ballkid for the 2015 Australian Open.

A member of the Montrose Tennis Club, Jackson had to attend level one and two trials and then four training squad sessions before he was chosen through a process of elimination earlier this year.

Tennis Australia selected 380 young tennis players to be involved in the tournament.

Jackson said he was excited about the opportunity to work at one of the biggest tennis tournaments on the tour, and that he was looking forward to testing his skills.

“To be a ballkid, you need good co-ordination but you also need to be able to concentrate for long periods of time.

“It will be amazing to work with some of the best tennis players in the world.”

Jackson, whose tennis idol is Rafael Nadal, hopes to follow in the footsteps of the greats one day.

Since he was six years old, he’s been coached by Dean Barclay and has seen much success in local and national tennis tournaments. However, he says his new role as ballkid does bring with it some new skills.

“Tennis is usually an individual sport, so this will be a good chance to work in a team. It’s a lot about working together and communicating on the court.”

From 6-11 December, he will compete in the Boys 14s Australian Tennis Championships against the 64 highest ranked 14-year-olds in the country. He will then move on to the ‘December Showdown’, where he and the other Australian Open ballkids will practise for the Australian Open, held from 19 January - 1 February, 2015. Jackson says he is looking forward to what promises to be a jam-packed summer of tennis.

“I’m excited about playing and being a ballkid. They’re really different and I’m really enjoying Jackson Bruce-Tennant (centre) with Montrose Tennis Club juniors. both.”

UNDER 10 OLINDA hosted Lilydale on Friday night in gloomy conditions.

Olinda batted first and put together another terrific score of 85. Hamish Fraser (12), Zac Seal (11) and Martha Box (9) were all great contributors. In reply, the Falcons scored a great total of 107. Xavier Kemm and Spike Sutton both got two wickets each and Jared Anderson picked up an awesome run out. Another great night for our kids.

UNDER 12 (2) WE batted first and were well placed at 2/50 off 10 overs in this one-dayer. Josh McMeekan starred with 17 retired. We accelerated our scoring though and finished on a solid 6/106.

Braving weather, athletes excel

By JAMIE STRUDLEY WET, stormy weather over the last few days was no deterrent for the Yarra Ranges Athletics Club members. The excellent facilities at Morrison Reserve, Mount Evelyn provided for some excellent performances on Saturday morning.

Even though the heavy rain meant the cancellation or hurdles and high jump competitions, the remainder of the events were completed with great enthusiasm and a competitive spirit.

A big thanks this week for the efforts of parent helpers, without your energy and support the athletes would not have the chance to enjoy all that athletics offers.

The club had three athletes competing for Team Vic at the Australian All Schools Athletics Championships in Adelaide. Lily Peacock finished sixth in the 14 Girls 800m. James Laven finished fourth in the 16 Boys 2000m Steeplechase. Emily Noonan competed in the 16 Girls 3000m Walk.

Congratulations to all these athletes on an outstanding achievement.

Once the rain had gone or seniors turned out at the Nunawading Athletics Club track for round 7 of the Athletics Victoria shield, a good-sized team enjoyed the warmer conditions returning some excellent results. Craig Hewitson, with three pb’s from four events was one of the standouts.

By STEVE UTTING APART from the under-17s and under-15s being washed out, Saturday morning it was a good weekend for the Monbulk cricketers with all teams in a good position.

The highlight of the weekend was twin centuries in the seconds to Matt Smart and Jason Simmonds. They shared an unbeaten 160-run thirdwicket record partnership. It was also Matt’s first century, playing in his fourth game of cricket.

Rain came down heavily on Sunday morning, forcing the postponement of the Monbulk Fun Run. The event will now be held this Sunday 14 December, at the same place, same time (Monbulk CC, 8am-8.30am registration, 9am 4km/8km fun runs).
