Prison ÃĒ€˜little threat to speciesÃĒ€™

Pre-Christmas

Rare four ÃĒ€˜safeÃĒ€™ A NEW prison to house VictoriaÃĒ€™s most notorious killers and terrorists has been cleared of threatening endangered species, according to a report out for public comment. Golden sun moths, striped legless lizards, grassland earless dragons and growling grass frogs were safe under the proposal for a maximum-security 40-bed unit at Barwon Prison, said the Justice of Department report. The new high-security wing, which City Hall approved in July, would help accommodate

the growing number of prisoners serving sentences for terrorism and serious organised crime. But the report said building the facility on the 2.4-hectare grassland site was unlikely to impact on the endangered species. The presence of the four animals was ruled out when planning permission was granted. An Ecology Australia report said the area was unsuitable for the earless dragon, grass frog and legless lizard. The land had only a moderate likelihood of being potential

habitat for the golden sun moth, the report said. ÃĒ€œThe site has a history of disturbance, which has included frequent grazing, rock removal, slashing and irrigation with treated wastewater from the prison,ÃĒ€? the report stated. The $20 million prison wing will be built outside the perimeter wall of the high-security Barwon Prison to isolate the bikies, underworld and violent criminals it is meant to house. Authorities expect it to open in April.

Fast approval for $120m building GEELONGÃĒ€™S council has rushed through planning approval for a nine-storey office building proposed to accommodate new government agencies. Techne Group hopes to sign the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) and Victorian Workcover Authority as tenants of the $120 million building but faces competition from other developments.

32 days. ÃĒ€œItÃĒ€™s fantastic to see a permit for such a significant project, which will boost our economy and result in jobs, approved in such a short time.ÃĒ€? Cr Lyons said streamlining council planning processes had cut approvals to ÃĒ€œrecord timeÃĒ€?, which was ÃĒ€œvital to kick-start investmentÃĒ€?.

The NDIA has established temporary offices in Geelong, while WorkCover will move 650 jobs to Geelong from next year. The project will incorporate the Malop St façade of central GeelongÃĒ€™s Carlton Hotel and include 277 on-site parking spaces. Mayor Darryn Lyons was ÃĒ€œexcitedÃĒ€? the building had secured a fast approval within
