ALCOA’S last 350 Geelong workers will face a bleak, uncertain Christmas when they farewell the aluminium plant after 51 years of operation in a fortnight.

Alcoa’s rolled products division will close on 19 December.

ry smelter ended in August with the departure of 500 workers.

The sackings will make for a unhappy Christmas despite sizeable separation packages for workers, many of whom have been long-term employees.

But the redundancy payouts - on average around three weeks pay for every year of service will be cold comfort for workers

and their families as they face a difficult search for new jobs. “It’s going to be hard for the older guys, for all of them, to get new jobs in the Geelong area,� Australian Workers Union organiser Gavin Penn told the Independent. “The payouts will be be eaten up fairly quickly. I’m already getting calls from people asking

about fly-in/fly-out jobs. There are a few going round but the big thing is when you’re gone from the family for three weeks then home for a week and off again it can be a bit tough. “But people need to work.

I know people from the smelter who have had to move to Queensland to work up there. “It’s the end of era but it’s

hard losing your job a week prior to Christmas.�

Alcoa reviewed its Point Henry operations in 2012, finding no prospect of becoming financially viable. Last February it announced the closure of the smelter and rolling mill as well as a rolling mill in Yennora, New South Wales.

12-storey high rise set to tower over Myers St

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A PROPOSED 12-storey office building on a Kings Funerals site in Myers St, Geelong, has earned planning approval.

The proposed building aims to snare government agencies the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) and Victorian Workcover Authority (VWA) as tenants.

The permit allows for a main entry from Myers St with a secondary access point on Fenwick St. The building would be “best practice in terms of environmentally sustainable design, flexible floor plates and setback from Myers St as the building rises in height”. It would predominately be glazed with areas of landscaping and green walls.

Mayor Darryn Lyons said he was excited the project had been given the go ahead.

“The City has been working with Kings Funerals throughout the planning process to ensure their permit was lodged quickly and thoroughly,” he said.

Proponent Michael King said the “landmark” building would also target the insurance industry and a proposed defence procurement office for Geelong.

“There are a whole range of service industries that will be eyeing Geelong off the back of the Workcover and NDIA locations here,” Mr King said.

“While I think we are well placed to participate in the public government tender process for those agencies, if we’re unsuccessful there are many other potential tenants. There’s an enormous amount of interest nationally in Geelong.”

Mr King said Kings Funerals would continue to operate as normal from its facilities at Newcomb and Grovedale, with the possibility of a third site being added.

City losing grip in upper house

GEELONG appears to have lost one of its two state upper house representatives with the defeat of Nationals member David O’Brien.

Mr O’Brien lost his seat after a group of micro parties arranged preference deals to snare the fifth seat in the Legislative Council electorate of Wester Victoria.

Liberal Simon Ramsey, based in Warrnambool, Labor’s Jaala Pulford and the Liberals’ Josh Morris, both in Ballarat, were safely elected as the seat went through 20 recounts to distribute preferences.

As the Independent went to press, Geelong-based Labor candidate Gayle Tierney was fighting for one of the final two spots with Palmer United Party’s Catriona Thoolen and James Purcell of Vote 1 Local Jobs.

Vote counters were sorting through preferences for 12 micro parties vying for the seat.

The region had three upper house representatives until Geelong-based Liberal David Koch resigned before the election.

All the region’s lower house seats remained unchanged, with each incumbent returned.

Alcoa has said it will close the plant if it cannot find a buyer but has been quiet on any negotiations with potential purchasers in the face of activists’ aggressive campaign to close the facility.

Mr Penn suggested the plant could represent “a nice little profitable power station”.

The report on the future of the shire’s five lifesaving clubs said funding, site constraints and increased demand for services were challenging issues.

“Whilst costs will vary at each location, it is clear from the Fairhaven experience that facility refurbishment at the scale required to bring the other four clubhouses up to standard will require significant funds,” the report said.

“Given that the clubs are community based and operate on minimal budgets, capital works like this cannot be financed solely through club resources.”

All five clubs also had problems storing equipment and had resorted to stowing surf rescue gear off-site, including Jan Juc using shipping containers.

Torquay club captain David Nankervis said the plight of surf lifesaving clubs was not properly understood, with some “ill-in-

formed comments” being made.

“Clubs have been left to fend for themselves, with often timepoor volunteers trying to keep up with a much higher standard of rules and regulations,” Mr Nankervis said.

“We have a population explosion in Armstrong Creek and, where we’d comfortably see 8000 on the beach here on a typical summer’s day, we expect that to double.

“We’ll become their first port of call and the tipping point will be the availability of parking even though there’s no effective patrol along the northern Torquay beaches.

“We perform a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week rescue service but we’d like to be better equipped to handle out-of-hours rescue because our resources are spread far and wide.”

THE GREAT Ocean Road’s iconic Lorne Hotel is on the market, tipped to draw more than $20 million.

The sale includes the hotel’s freehold and business with its 300-seat beer garden, sports bar, bottle shop and gaming machines.

Agent CBRE described the hotel as a “highly profitable business” with an “excellent upside”.

Nestled among eucalypts on Mountjoy Pde above Louttit Bay, the “true trophy asset” boasts a 4437-square-metre site including a first-floor bistro with panoramic views, a new top-floor functions area and more than a dozen accommodation rooms.

The hotel has been a Lorne fixture since opening in 1876.

The venue burned down in 1919 when a fire started during the night. Residents and furniture were saved but limited water pressure failed to save the building.

The hotel was rebuilt the following year when a two-storey establishment rose from the ashes with 40 bedrooms, smoking rooms, a dining hall, a kitchen, electric light, tennis and croquet lawns, a bowling green and a luxurious motor garage for up to 12 vehicles.

The hotel has changed numerous times in the intervening century, with insiders tipping it could fetch a figure above $20 million.

Mr Fraser, also a poet, actor, musician, teacher, writer, director and producer, said Strangers to the World was an essay on conscience and its role in the lives of three extraordinary people.

“These people have fascinating stories and, as Rachel says, they’ve just got to be told,” Mr Fraser said.

“She could charge a fortune but she’s working at base rate.

“We’re part way through the project at this stage, we’ve filmed at the Docklands studios in Melbourne and the film’s been backed by the Australian Cultural Fund. We have a trailer on Etty Hillesum up already.”

Ms Couzens, who stormed home ahead of Liberal contender Paula Kontelj to retain Geelong for Labor, spent Monday with pro-

testing members of the Maritime Union of Australia, CFMEU and Australian Workers Union.

Mr Katos said the protest had nothing to do with state issues and Ms Couzensâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; participation was the start of a â&#x20AC;&#x153;paybackâ&#x20AC;? process for union support at the election. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The unions very, very strongly supported the Labor party with manpower and resources and now the favours have all got to be called

THE BARWON region has the slowest projected employment growth in the state, according to Victoria University figures.

Senior research fellow Janine Dixon predicted average annual jobs growth for the region of 1.62 per cent until 2020.

The highest regional growth rates would be in the Wimmera at 2.77 per cent and Western District, 2.61 per cent.

Melbourneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s job growth would be 1.7 per cent, Ms Dixon predicted. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In Barwon, including Geelong, the manufacturing sector has a relatively large representation of motor vehicle manufacturing. As a result, Barwonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s manufacturing sector is forecast to grow more slowly than the state average and Barwon is forecast to be the slowest-growing regional economy. â&#x20AC;&#x153;However, growth is still positive in Barwon manufacturing.â&#x20AC;?

Ms Dixon said the regionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s major industries for employment growth were health and social assistance and retail trade.

"It took a little adjustment to my driving technique but now I use it without thinking.â&#x20AC;?

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN PROPERTY industry sectors are “spruiking” Geelong’s affordability crisis for their own benefit, according to a real estate expert.

Domain Group senior economist Dr Andrew Wilson said developers and builders used the “affordability mantra” to push for increased home building.

“There are people in the community who are marginalised by a lack of home ownership but there are parts of the industry that use affordability to say we need more houses," Dr Wilson said.

“Affordability is about your mortgage payment more than about land supply, and low interest rates have given a sharp spike

to affordability.

“The improvement in affordability has washed through the system now and there's a role for government to improve that.”

The Independent reported last week that Master Builders Association of Victoria research showed local housing had declined from "unaffordable" in 2004 to "highly unaffordable".

The Barwon region has the fifth most expensive land in Australia, according to Housing Industry Association (HIA) and RP Data.

The ranking followed revelations in the Independent that an international survey rated Geelong property less affordable than New York.

But Dr Wilson said Geelong was affordable compared to Melbourne and was marketed on its lifestyle benefits.

“Geelong is more closely associated with Melbourne these days, especially given the number of commuters.

“The outlook is positive for the market in terms of demand levels because prices are lucky to keep up with inflation.

“The positives in terms of the housing market lays in generating new dwellings and creating jobs. I’m not convinced we’ve seen enough houses built given the low interest rates and I don’t think interest rates will go up any time soon.”

Bongo’s on beat as shuttle for ferry

The six-seat Bongo Transit will service 400,000 QueenscliffSorrento ferry passengers annually.

Bongo Transit’s Greg Jones said the shuttle would provide a “hop on, hop off” service between the ferry terminal and both town centres.

Mr Jones and business partner Philip Luchetta discovered the Bongo while travelling in Europe and Asia.

“We'd seen the need for some form of easy, environmentally-

“When we came across the European-style Bongo tricar, known as the tuk tuk, we knew it could do the trick. Over the past

four years we've worked with the Dutch designer, the Thai manufacturer and Australian Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development to perfect a super-safe, zero-emission electric version that we named Bongo.”

Mr Jones said the shuttle service was creating jobs, with more than 40 local people trained and licensed to drive the unique vehicles.

“We expect the service will lead to benefits for business operators in Queenscliff and Sorrento, with more people being able to transit from the ferry terminal to the retail centres - and it is all happening while protecting the environment.”

Conference examines local trial

NDIS reviewed

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN GEELONG hosted a conference to monitor the progress of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) this week as mental health advocates warned people were still being left out.

Barwon Disability Advocacy Network (BDAN) organised the conference after monitoring the local NDIS pilot since its rollout in July 2013.

BDAN spokesperson Len Jaffit said the conference examined the NDIS’s performance for its 3200-plus clients in the region.

“It’s a good time for those who have been involved to explore how well it’s meeting its goals of a better life for people with a disability,” Mr Jaffit said.

“We looked at who’s eligible so far and who’s missing out and whether people with a disability have a strong enough voice in designing their care plans to make a real difference to their lives. As this is a pilot program there are inevitably still grey areas about which supports are covered and how the NDIS is reaching decisions when designing an individual plan.

“There have also been concerns about how people who have missed out on an NDIS package are being supported.”

Mr Jaffit said the NDIS’s involvement of clients in shaping service plans was “great in theory” but could be difficult for people with communication or cognitive impairments.

Mental Health Australia chief Frank Quinlan said uncertainty around the scheme was threatening services to the mentally ill.

Feedback from trial sites consistently showed the mentally ill were left “confused and disheartened”, Mr Quinlan said.

“The NDIS is too important to be rushed without proper planning and design. Good intentions are not enough.

“Eligibility remains a major point of confusion. Indeed, we’ve heard that some apparently eligible people are still being rejected for support.

“We’re very concerned programs are being absorbed into the NDIS and people currently using these services will no longer be able to access them.”

$90m Cats project ‘set to start’ PLANNING and design on Simonds Stadium’s stage-four expansion will start immediately following the election of a new state government, according to Geelong Cats chief executive Brian Cook.

Key elements of the project will be the replacement of the Brownlow and Jennings stands to boost crowd capacity, Mr Cook said.

“This is an outstanding outcome for our club and the Geelong community, and ensures we continue to implement our vision of providing a world-class stadium for our region,” Mr Cook said.

The $90 million stage-four redevelopment is set to proceed after Labor promised $70 million for the project during the state election campaign. The coalition failed to pledge funding for stage four.

The stadium has struggled to fill with football patrons after the three earlier stages expanded capacity to 33,500. The largest crowd last year was 27,402 when the Cats hosted North Melbourne.

Stage four will lift capacity to 36,000.

The expansion comes after the Cats' first financial operating loss in 15 years.

The club blamed falling attendances and a drop in commercial revenue for the $250,000 loss.

Home attendances at Simonds Stadium, the MCG and Etihad Stadium dropped from an average of 36,649 in 2013 to 33,915 this year.

Mr Cook said commercial revenue was down $1.1 million and football department spending in-

creased $200,000 to $21.6 million.

A key task of the stage-four upgrade would be identifying the best timelines for commencement and completion of construction while minimising disruption to match-day and general club operations.

“We can however confirm that there will be no impact during the 2015 season,” Mr Cook said.

“Once the key timelines for the project have been established, we will communicate these dates to members and stakeholders.”

Mr Cook said the stadium's staged development added to the club’s loss.

“Over the past decade the club has invested all of our profits - over $13 million - back into Simonds Stadium. No other club has the same issues around stadium costs, and in addition to this investment we continue to pay the City of Greater Geelong for leasing the venue and office space at the ground.

“These stadium costs are fixed regardless of how many games we play at our stadium and so increasing the number of games we play at Simonds Stadium is very important to our financial outcomes.

“Playing two of our home games at Etihad Stadium in 2014 was very costly to us and we continue to seek AFL support for returning these games to Simonds Stadium.

“While the overall result is disappointing, we continue to invest in our football department.”

Rare four â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;safeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; A NEW prison to house Victoriaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most notorious killers and terrorists has been cleared of threatening endangered species, according to a report out for public comment.

Golden sun moths, striped legless lizards, grassland earless dragons and growling grass frogs were safe under the proposal for a maximum-security 40-bed unit at Barwon Prison, said the Justice of Department report.

The new high-security wing, which City Hall approved in July, would help accommodate

the growing number of prisoners serving sentences for terrorism and serious organised crime.

But the report said building the facility on the 2.4-hectare grassland site was unlikely to impact on the endangered species.

The presence of the four animals was ruled out when planning permission was granted. An Ecology Australia report said the area was unsuitable for the earless dragon, grass frog and legless lizard.

habitat for the golden sun moth, the report said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The site has a history of disturbance, which has included frequent grazing, rock removal, slashing and irrigation with treated wastewater from the prison,â&#x20AC;? the report stated.

The $20 million prison wing will be built outside the perimeter wall of the high-security Barwon Prison to isolate the bikies, underworld and violent criminals it is meant to house.

Authorities expect it to open in April.

HERITAGE: The ignored kiln and its interprative sign.

GEELONG’S historic lime kilns have been abandoned to vandalism, graffiti and rubbish.

The heritage-listed brick and bluestone kilns, at Limeburner’s Point on the Stingaree Bay side of Eastern Park, were reinforced with steel bracing and meshing and fenced off several years ago but have fallen to neglect and the elements.

The kilns, built into the side of an escarpment date from the 1860s and 1870s.

The ruins are of archaeological and historical significance to Victoria, with lime a crucial building material in Geelong from as early as 1838.

Heritage councillor Tony Ansett said State Government had allowed the kilns to slide into ruin.

“These are the sort of things I find difficult in Geelong,” he said.

“In Ballarat and Bendigo they highlight these sort of things. We have history here that goes right back to early beginnings of the town.

“This is where they found the legendary Geelong Keys. Limeburner’s Point and lime are a critical part of our history and our early manufacturing, we need it to be maintained and restored.“ A Department of Environment and Primary Industries said City of Greater Geelong was responsible for managing the site.

Cage-fight glee

By NOEL MURPHY GEELONG mixed martial arts expert George Sotiropolous has welcomed the new Andrews Government‘s move to allow cage fighting in Victoria.

The Australian coach, who has argued legalised cage fighting could earn Victoria $45 million a tournament, said the fights would also improve safety for the sport’s competitors.

“It‘s a new era for combat sport in the world and Melbourne gets to be a part of it,” Mr Sotiropolous said.

“It‘s an exciting time for fans and participants as everyone ben-

efits from the change in law.

“Victorians no longer need to leave the state as the big show has come to them.”

Mr Sotiropoulos has argued the safety of fighters was at risk while their sport was staged in boxing rings.

“There are lots of guys who have fallen through the ropes onto the ground, onto concrete,’’ he previously told the Independent.

Mr Sotiropoulos said concerns that cage fighting was dangerous lay with outdated perceptions of the sport.

The sport had “no rules” when it began but regulations increased

as its popularity increased, he said.

“Rules have changed since then, commissions have gotten involved and fighter safety is paramount. Doctors always check fighters before and after.

“Cages present the right environment for the contest but it’s also safer for the fighters.

“MMA is not purely a striking sport. It’s wrestling and striking and we use the cage. You get pinned against the side as opposed to pinned to the ropes where you can fall.

“It’s like an enclosed trampoline.’’

City to miss out on NBN roll-out again GEELONG has missed out on another National Broadband Network (NBN) roll-out despite being on the cusp of the program two years ago.

The organisation responsible for the roll-out, NBNCo, has instead scheduled coastal and inland towns for construction starting next year.

The “indicative” plan includes 34,700 local connections up to June 2016, with quarterly updates to follow.

The Independent earlier this

year reported a series of local issues related to inadequate internet connections in Geelong, including impacts on investment opportunities.

Federal Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson said work would begin in Bellbrae, Jan Juc and Torquay in August.

Work on Barwon Heads, Breamlea, Mannerim, Marcus Hill, Ocean Grove, Point Lonsdale, Queenscliff and Wallington would begin in October. Construction would start

in Bannockburn, Lethbridge, Murgheboluc, Russells Bridge and Teesdale in February 2016.

Lorne was scheduled for April 2016, followed by Airey's Inlet, Anglesea and Fairhaven.

“After campaigning so hard for better broadband, this rollout is fantastic news for Corangamite residents,” Ms Henderson said.

A fibre-to-the-node (FTTN) service would be rolled out, delivering superfast download speeds of up to 100 megabits

per second, she said.

“I've also been fighting for Corangamite residents who live in Geelong’s southern suburbs.

There is superfast broadband available to some 50,000 premises across Geelong through iinet’s cable broadband or Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) network.

“I understand that NBN Co’s intention is to acquire Geelong’s HFC network as part of NBN’s multi-technology mix.”

“At the end of each year families’ participation in HIPPY is celebrated at a graduation ceremony,” the mentors said.

“It was so exciting to see the agefours half way through their HIPPY journey and for them to see the age-five families successfully completing the two-year program.”

Spring finishes equal warmest THE GEELONG region has completed its equal warmest spring since records began in 1903.

The mean spring temperature this year was 15.3C, the same as recorded in the other warmest year, 2011. The 30-year average for spring in the region is 13.8C. An above-average November for temperature helped set the record, with the month finishing on a mean of 16.9C compared to the 30-year average of 15.8C. This November was warmer than last year’s, which had a mean of 15.4C, but cooler than the hottest on record, which was in 2009 with 18.1C. November 2014 also recorded six days over 30C, with the hottest day registering 35.4C on the eighth day of the month.

Rain in November was barely average around Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula, which were virtual oases compared to the Otways and Great Divide where disappointing results were recorded.

Urban Geelong averaged 45mm compared to the 30year average of 52.8mm. The catchment areas were much lower, in most cases receiving around 60 per cent of their November averages.

The month ended up painting an unhappy picture for spring, with only a little over half of the normal 30-year average rain recorded.

The rain shortfall left the region’s water storages lower for the month, with Barwon Water recording a capacity of 76.3 per cent this week.

As for other weather readings, it was a fairly typical November.

Three thunder days were recorded but no severe storms.

Light hail was recorded on the first day of the month, while two days had strong wind gusts over 60km/h at the Breakwater weather station. The windiest day was also 1 November, with a gust of 69km/h.

THE DEFINITION of zombie is a dead body brought to life by a supernatural force, or someone without independent imagination, intelligence et cetera.

While I haven't seen anyone fitting the first description lately, I'd suggest those fitting the second are not exactly an endangered species around here.

Maybe that's why some newspaper plodders are extremely touchy about the subject. "We are not zombies" thundered their editorial, as reported in the Independent’s alert-but-not-alarmed Double Take column on 14 November.

There's also the possibility that cryogenically frozen corpses were stored in a cellar below the so-called newspaper by its founder and inventor of industrial refrigeration, Fridge Dude, in the 1800s, with the bodies to be revived and escorted up to editorial desks as required.

On the buses - or not

Chicken out of pier

I AGREE with D Godfrey (Letters, 21 November).

On 10 January I emailed Mayor Darryn Lyons about buses in Geelong, particularly the lack of services on Christmas day.

His assistant replied: “Thank you for your email to the mayor. He enjoys receiving feedback and ideas from residents".

What a pity he didn't take my email seriously.

As an ex-flight attendant for Ansett and Qantas, I had few Christmas meals with my family because working that day was part of my job.

While I would not deny our hard working bus drivers their special times with families, perhaps the Christmas meal could be worked around an early or afternoon shift.

The fact most weekend bus services from Geelong’s CBD finish 7pm or earlier is just not good enough.

Bus drivers tell me there are not enough passengers to warrant extra services, so bad luck if you are in the minority that needs buses and cannot afford taxis.

I suggested in my email that C Lyons’ creative team could get people to use our bus services.

Incentive is usually effective in enticing people to try something new.

Come on, Geelong residents, try catching a bus

ALL THE hyperbole surrounding building a Yarra Street Pier on Geelong’s waterfront, mainly to berth oceangoing cruise vessels, needs to be assessed from both sides of the equation.

Recently with a nephew we travelled on an upmarket American vessel with capacity of 4000-odd passengers but which would have been three-quarters full.

The six-day trip included Melbourne, Devonport, Hobart and Sydney. The passengers were elderly and the boat had travelled from Canada, America, Singapore then around the coast of Australia and on to Europe.

Quite a few passengers told us they lived on the ship permanently because it was cheaper than the burden of owning and maintaining a big home.

Interestingly, when going ashore the passengers excitedly returned with boxes and buckets of Kentucky Fried Chicken, even though the fare included all meals on board plus 24/7 coffee, tea, croissants, prawns, spring rolls, sandwiches and finger food et cetera.

The fare is a big stake for most people for voyages around northern Australia.

In Geelong, the average daily maximum temperature for winter in 2014 was 15C and the minimum was 7.9C. I doubt outdoor eateries would be highly successful with cruise visitors at this time of year.

ENOUGH hoo-ha about this spectacular Christmas tree (Independent, 28 November).

I want to ask Darren Lyons what happened to our equally amazing life-size nativity scene, which used to be placed in central Geelong opposite Johnstone Park for all to enjoy.

Last time I remember we were still a Christian country.

Where is the nativity scene now?

Is it still in storage because we wouldn't want to upset another immigrant minority group?

I say bring out the true meaning of Christmas and place the nativity scene back in its rightful place and let Australians not lose our true identity.

So let’s be factual: cruise ships would not benefit accommodation providers or restaurants.

An overseas liner would rather visit Melbourne not Geelong, Sydney not Newcastle, Adelaide not Port Lincoln, Perth not Geraldton, Brisbane not Townsville.

Plus, the enormous cost of dredging and spoiling of the Corio Bay seabed would be horrific.

A king, not a scholar DARYL Backwell (Letters, 28 November) was on the ball.

I used to find Alan Barron frustrating. I would research his so-call facts but invariably find much information to refute his positions.

A true scholar would look at his beliefs then explore counter arguments.

Apart from being a little irritated, I now find his letters a source of amusement. He has no expertise and many of his sources also appear to lack this.

What I find interesting is that if the vast majority of scientists agree on the warming phenomena and are able to convince most of the world leaders of the fact of global warming. Can they all be stupid?

The Independent should no longer publish his letters until he has something worthwhile reading, although I acknowledge that everyone has the right to free speech and to be heard.

ALL DARYL Backwell’s assertions were fallacious.

He fails to understand climate science because he doesn’t understand the difference between speculation and fact.

No hard evidence supports global warming theory, which climate experts like Brian Cox have admitted. Speculative computer projections on possible outcomes are not proof, only guesswork.

Greenhouse gas theory has been shown to be flawed but some folks cling to it tenaciously because otherwise the pack of cards called global warming quickly collapses.

Mr Backwell relied on cherry-picked data and distortions or half-truths peddled by the IPCC. Contrary to what he might assert, scientific data shows the ice caps are not melting, there is no impeding coastal flooding and extreme weather events have decreased 20 per cent in the past two decades.

In 2011 Professor Tim Flannery, then chairman of the Australian climate council, said in Geelong that even if all industry in Australia closed tomorrow the effect could take up to 1000 years to impact the climate.

So where is the problem? Does Mr Backwell know better than Prof Flannery?

It will cost tens of billions to address alleged global warming for a possible return of virtually nothing.

This is a high price to pay for taking action on a so-called problem that isn’t a problem to begin with.

Even Aborigines have long forgotten where they came from about 70,000 years ago. It was India, along the coast of the inland sea.

FEW AUSSIE musicians have been able to eke out a rock music career like blues legend Phil Manning.

The evergreen guitarist, who’s been carving up Fender Stratocasters and Guild acoustics since the 1960s while playing alongside all sorts of greats, will play Corio’s Gateway Hotel this Saturday with blues legand Matt Taylor and Chain.

The iconic rock outfit is as tight as ever, probably tighter, Manning told the Independent this week.

The band was also enjoying touring despite its members’, let’s be truthful about it, advanced years.

But the Gateway audiences wouldn’t notice it, Maning said, although Chain had made one or two concessions to the ear-shattering job of journeymen rockers along the way.

“We actually play really quietly on stage these days,” he confided.

“Matt wears earplugs and when he plays harmonica, if we play loud, then he turns up his foldback. Full-blast harmonica takes the top of your head off but I have this gorgeous little Fender amp and we all keep our levels down onstage.

“It’s still loud out front but when it’s loud on stage it’s like you’re fighting physics. When it’s softer it’s a bit more like playing jazz.

“But everyone’s comfortable and now we play with a lot more energy and the sound guys love it they can actually mix it.”

Manning’s guitar skills are more than considerable. In an age of virtuoso technicians and shredders he’s a faithful practitioner of the instrument’s capacity to deliver raw emotion, rhythm and melody.

In short, it’s all about feel; about the blues.

His thumb-picking slide technique on acoustics is diverse, drawing on a spectrum of influences across blues, rock, country, Celtic, even bluegrass.

BY ALL reports Shakespeare was a fast writer.

But Geelong Repertory Theatre is taking the bard to new speeds.

The Geelong Rep’s latest production is The Complete Works of William Shakespeare - Abridged, ploughing through 38 plays and 154 sonnets in 100 minutes.

Surely you jest?

No, but the good actors of the Geelong Rep promise a rollicking romp with men in funny trousers, whimsical olde English, ugly wigs and a fair bit of projectile vomiting.

And what about the bad actors? Well, the Geelong Rep doesn’t have any but it does have seasoned thespian, Geoff Gaskill directing a cast of “unparalleled flexibility and unquestionable talent”.

Gaskill will tackle all that left-over high school English class anguish where students struggled to find the real meaning of Shakespeare amid what often read like a foreign language.

Despite the continuing profound influence of Shakespeare on the western world, it’s the popular sound bites that really permeate society’s consciousness.

“Alas, poor Yorick”, “what’s in a name,” “to be or not to be”, “my kingdom for a horse”, and “wherefore art thou, Romeo” will all get the Geelong Rep treatment.

As if that’s not enough, the troupe will throw in music, sock puppets, severed heads, and a Hamlet to die for.

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare will be performed at Woodbin Theatre 8pm this Friday and Saturday and two matinees from 2pm Sunday.

WELL SEASONED: The 2015 theatre season is set to be a blast at GPAC, with shows like New Zealand Dance Company’s Rotunda.

Smith said she was excited to present a theatre season “bursting with quality international talent and truly Australian stories”.

“Increasingly we are approached directly to ensure an extended life for premiere productions. This means GPAC is often the only theatre in Victoria to present these works from our major theatre companies,” Ms Smith said.

“In 2015 not only will we have a great theatre season but also very special Geelong-only seasons. It is a season of icons and legends as well as exciting new stories.”

AN EXCITING variety of Australian and international theatre will come to Geelong next year, according to the city’s leading performance arts venue.

Geelong Performing Arts Centre (GPAC) unveiled the lineup for its 2015 Deakin University Theatre Season this week, giving patrons a glimpse of the “extraordinary calibre of theatrical talent” coming next year.

Theatre figures including award-winning writer, musician and radio broadcaster Casey Bennetto and actors Noni Hazlehurst and Maria Mercedes helped launch the 2015 season.

Exclusive focus on ’70s surfing FLASHBACK: John Witzig’s 1975 image Bells Steps, part of the Arcadia exhibition.

THE SIGHTS, sounds and spirit of surfing in the ’70s features in an exclusive exhibition at Geelong Gallery.

The gallery has unveiled Arcadia Sound of the Sea after securing exclusive Victorian rights from the National Portrait Gallery of Australia.

The exhibition features three of the country’s leading surf artists whose works include scenes from Bells Beach and Torquay.

The gallery said John Witzig, who co-founded iconic Australian surfing magazine Tracks, contributed a range of photographs to the exhibition, while

the ink drawings of Nicholas Harding and Albert Falzon’s “psychedelic” film footage were also among the 40 exhibits.

“Imbued with a Romantic conception of the awesome and spiritually restorative force of the sea, it expresses the free-spirited, revolutionary character of a group of young and perfectlyformed Australian surfers in the early 1970s,” the gallery said.

“Witzig’s photographs have been newly printed to a large-scale size and feature young men in the ocean, on the beach, coastal landscapes, or in derelict colonial or makeshift dwellings

in which they camped.

“Witzig often found himself in precarious positions when trying to photograph the speed and glory of surfers riding waves. Immersed in the water and amid the action, with a keen eye and nerves of steel Witzig captured the surfers’ athleticism and lyrical grace.”

“A selection of photographs on display in this special exhibition also document local surf culture at iconic Bells Beach and Torquay.”

The gallery said patrons would see segments from Falzon’s seminal surf movie Morning of the Earth (1972),

“which channel dreams of a free-spirited lifestyle”.

“Falzon’s use of long lenses and sublime surfing sequences in unspoiled lands created a visual manifesto that promoted counter-culture ideals such as living simply and sustainability.”

The gallery said Harding’s drawings of unruly coastal scenery and surfers’ salty tangled hair was a “natural fit with the texture and vigorous yet gentle, sensibility of Witzig’s photographs”. The exhibition closes 22 February.

Cats fall lower GEELONG Cricket Club’s season went from bad to worse last weekend when Monash Tigers put the Cats to the sword.

Bowling first, Geelong struggled to make inroads as two of the Tigers batsman posted centuries in their side’s massive total of 9/398.

Hayden Butterworth bobbed up with 3/33 to boast the day’s best figures.

In reply, Geelong began shakily to be 4/40.

But in a promising sign the inexperienced line-up showed a bit of ticker and fought the day out, eventually dismissed for 282.

Eamonn Vines (67) continued to show he is a player of the future, while Carl Sandri (50) and Jake Reed (42) went down fighting.

This weekend Geelong plays two Twenty20 matches, travelling to Melbourne Uni on Saturday and hosting Fitzroy Doncaster on Sunday.

Let’s hope the carefree nature of the shortest form of the game can release the shackles for the Cats players.

In Geelong Cricket Association, the division one ladder is beginning to form a serious logjam in the middle.

South Barwon finds itself right in the centre of the congestion with three wins from six games. The Swans have been quite inconsistent so far, with some thumping wins but also two very disappointing losses in the past two rounds.

They now take on East Belmont, which has been in ominous form of late, racking up big scores while keeping sides to low totals with the ball.

For the Swans, Matt Kennedy has enjoyed some good form after crossing over from division two’s Waurn Ponds, while Clinton Peake has 200 runs for only one dismissal.

CLIFTON Springs remained the go-to location for snapper over the past week.

Mark Sesar and Keith Fry made a daybreak start, anchoring just out from Alcoa Pier and baiting up with freshly caught garfish. They soon boated an 7kg snapper then a 6kg fish half an hour later.

I ventured off Clifton Springs last Friday evening but was distracted by schools of large Australian salmon busting up on the surface, which made for excellent fun on light gear casting and trolling in and around the feeding fish.

Other anglers found good numbers of squid in close drifting over the shallow grass beds with smaller size 2.5 jigs.

Indented Head produced snapper and squid in great numbers for anglers prepared to cover ground. Paul Jones took a 3kg snapper with a Gulp minnow soft plastic on 4kg tackle, which resulted in an outstanding fight.

Fishing World Geelong’s Kevin Hunter set out on Port Phillip Bay early Saturday morning to fish the Williamstown ANSA convention. Kevin motored over to Mornington where he managed 4.4kg snapper before drifting pilchard fillets under a float at the entrance to Swan Bay where he caught a 1.6kg tailor along with silver trevally, salmon and a 1.2kg flathead.

Squid were also taken on jigs cast among the moored boats.

The Barwon River estuary fished well for salmon and trevally. Anglers fishing the incoming tide with pippies and prawns had the best result, while some juvenile mulloway were also landed.

Anglers surf fishing just outside the river caught salmon to 1kg on baits such as pilchard.

John Carroll travelled to Port Albert where he landed a 7kg snapper in the favourable conditions that greeted him.

On the freshwater front, Wurdee Boluc Reservoir remained a clear standout. Bradley Cox arrived late Sunday afternoon intent on banking a trophy redfin, finally catching a 50cm fish on a 10cm Z-Man grub the Motor Oil colour.

Lake Wendouree was again

productive for brown trout. Anglers fly fishing at night achieved the best results, catching trout within metres of the bank.

Eric Box and Rudi Holzfeind travelled to Lake Tollondo where they caught both brown and rainbow Trout. They boated most on mudeye suspended under a float, with the fish ranging in size from 1.5kg to 2.3kg.

The Barwon River produced great numbers of redfin on lures such at Atomic Shad in Colour #17. Successful anglers were prepared to cover ground searching for schools of feeding fish.

The next week’s options include the Swan Bay channel for a variety of species or wading the shallows casting plastics for flathead at areas such as Clifton Springs and St Leonards. Freshwater options include Wurdee Boluc Reservoir for trophy redfin.
