“I had no idea,” she told the Free Times on Tuesday while studying a summer course at the University of Queensland.

“I was actually in the back (having just received another award) and I heard my name and thought ‘what’s that for’.”

Principal Jason Callcott said the school had been making the trip down south for about 20 years, but now the students flew instead of taking the bus.

He said it was an exciting experience as many had never been on a plane before.

A highlight of the trip will be a school wreath-laying ceremony performed by school leaders Casey Gillam and Isabella Newton at the Australian War Memorial.

Fluoride dumped

By ALENA HIGGINS FLUORIDE will no longer be added to the region’s water supplies, after Southern Downs Regional Council dumped the controversial practice last week.

Rapturous applause erupted from the public gallery when Councillor Vic Pennisi went against a recommendation to declare council’s water fluoridation survey invalid and proposed a motion to remove the additive instead.

Minutes earlier, tensions boiled over at the meeting in Stanthorpe as more than 25 passionate anti-fluoride campaigners tried to squeeze into the small public gallery to hear council discuss the results of the questionnaire.

In an extraordinary step, Cr Jo McNally labeled council’s decision to set the parameter of the non-compulsory survey at 50 per cent returns as a “mistake”.

“I think as councillors we need to

stand up and say we made a mistake,” she said.

“We voted for this and I think we need to take responsibility and not pass the buck to officers for our errors on the day.”

Cr Cameron Gow agreed, saying the results - which were two thirds in favor of discontinuing fluoride - were clear.

Mayor Peter Blundell, however, was critical of the move.

“My concern is if it was council’s intention to remove fluoride we should have done it without wasting $10,000 and officers’ time,” he said.

Cr Jamie Mackenzie disagreed, insisting council needed to undertake public consultation.

A TOURISM transition group commissioned by Southern Downs Regional Council to find economies of scale has recommended council merge its two tourism bodies.

The group, made up of 12 industry stakeholders, hopes to submit its final report to council by 12 December, in which it recommends council merge Warwick Tourism and Events (WTE) and Granite Belt Wine and Tourism (GBWT) into a single entity.

The report follows a study by an

international consultant commissioned by SDRC two years ago and a review by an advisory group last year, which both endorsed consolidation.

Tourism transition group chair Martin Cooper said the group’s decision to unite the two bodies was unanimous.

“The committee sees absolutely incredible potential for marketing (Stanthorpe and Warwick) under the one banner,” the Ridgemill Estate owner said.

“If someone is not toeing the line in Stanthorpe or anywhere else, there may be a degree of scepticism from the public that something like this might happen again,” Mr Armstrong said.

“For this organisation in particular, next time they try to raise money there are going to be some people who are pretty wary.”

President of the Stanthorpe Bowling Club Justin Liddy said he believed the raffle garnered about $450 in total tickets sales before it was suddenly withdrawn.

He personally sold about 30 tickets, worth $2 each, to members of the Stanthorpe Men’s Shed and about 50 tickets to the croquet ladies, but says not everyone has had their money refunded.

“There were quite a few members of the bowling club who bought tickets too and as far as I know some have been refunded but not all at this stage,” Mr Liddy said.

He said the association agreed in a letter to him dated 21 February to still provide $150 towards the Bowls Carnival, but it “never followed through with the promise”.

The Free Times contacted the president of the Association Greg Thouard for a response yesterday, but he declined to comment.

A spokeswoman for the Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation (OLGR) confirmed it had received complaints in relation to the cancellation of a raffle that was to be conducted by the Stanthorpe Festival Association, which it was currently investigating.

“This is the first time a complaint has been received about this association,” she said.

GrainX in the gun A MAJOR grain storage facility at Allora causing environmental harm will be forced to clean up its act.

Complaints regarding noise and dust from nearby residents have been ongoing since GrainX commenced operations at 20 Herbert Street in November 2011, but in the last couple of months they have spiked.

Last week, Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) passed a resolution to proceed with action against GrainX under the Environ-

mental Protection Act for causing environmental harm.

SDRC director of planning and environment Ken Harris told councillors at the general meeting last Wednesday, the owner of the facility, Chris Hood, was not disputing the claims.

“They acknowledge there are problems and are trying to ensure they are addressing those problems,” Mr Harris said.

The Free Times contacted Mr Hood for comment, but he did not respond before this edition went to print.

Water woes worsen HIGH level water restrictions have been triggered across the Southern Downs as dam levels continue to plummet. Effective immediately, Warwick, Yangan, Allora, Dalveen, Pratten, Leyburn and Karara will join Stanthorpe on high level restrictions, while Killarney and Wallangarra will remain on permanent water restrictions as outlined in the table.

Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) manager Water and Wastewater Tendekai Mapeza said restrictions jumped from medium to high when Leslie Dam dropped to 30 per cent capacity on 25 November.

“During the last three months our rainfall has been exceptionally low with forecasters suggesting that there is little prospect of any significant rain for an extended period into summer and the new year,” Mr Mapeza said.

“The result of this is that our dams are dropping quite quickly and have reached the levels where council is obliged to impose more stringent water restrictions.”

Other options of redress available to council included issuing a Direction Notice for contravening a prescribed provision, or prosecuting an infringement notice with a maximum penalty of $33,900.

Council will revisit the matter in May 2015.

Council will seek compliance through a Transitional Environmental Program, which requires the operator to outline the action they need to take to ensure environmental nuisance is prevented or minimised.

While this may not achieve an immediate solution, it is an ongoing program until compliance is achieved, according to council’s business paper.

Council has come under fire for approving the grain facility, which resides in the middle of town but has Existing Use Rights.

UNKNOWN offenders gained entry to a house in Archibald Street, Stanthorpe by cutting a flyscreen and unlocking the door, sometime between 8.30am and 9.40am last Friday 28 November.

While damage was caused to the flyscreen, no property was stolen from the residence.

Goods recovered ALSO on the night of 28 November, a trailer owned by the Stanthorpe Cricket Association was stolen from C.F. White Oval. The offender has been identified by police and will be charged with the offence. The trailer was located in bushland off Britannia Street in good condition and will be returned to the owners. Police are also investigating the theft of alcohol from a shed in Denham Street that occurred on Sunday afternoon. A number of suspects have been identified and police hope to charge those offenders in coming days.

Good riddance fluoride BECAUSE of the way the survey was designed there was no chance for the no vote to succeed, as some councillors admitted. But the no vote in Warwick was 64.7 per cent and in Stanthorpe 70.2 per cent of the total votes returned, an overwhelming fluoride rejection. We should all thank Councillor Vic Pennisi for his convincing arguments regarding the proportion of no votes, the health risks, the discriminatory distribution and a possible class action. He also had the support of Crs Ross Bartley, Jo McNally, Jamie Mackenzie, Cameron Gow and Glyn Rees. Yet Neil Meiklejohn and Denise Ingram are both keen on fluoride. It has taken a long time, but finally most councillors had the good sense to accept the real result of the fluoride survey. We will remember at the next council election.

A 27 per cent response rate does not represent a statistically viable result. Instead, all the results tell us is that, of those who responded, the majority said no without providing any indication of what the remaining 73 per cent thought. In essence, the survey degenerated into a non-randomly sampled one and, in consequence, produced a meaningless result.

Council should have conducted either a 100 per cent compulsory survey or, more realistically, a correctly composed random sample of greater than 10 per cent of each community affected. For this failure, SDRC should accept censure.

They have voted to remove the poison ... fluoride ... from our water supply. That is a wonderful achievement of the council and will be remembered. May I wish all those involved a very happy and a holy Christmas.

Act of nobility WEDNESDAY 26 November brought to light for me how noble and sensible our council can be. Despite failing to achieve the insurmountable 50 per cent stipulated volume of returned fluoridation ballots, Cr Pennisi stood up for the people who elected him and his colleagues when he moved that the 50 per cent target was never going to be achieved anyway, and furthermore stated the commonsense fact that with a population size of around 10,000 a sample of three per cent was statistically adequate to provide an accurate result. Even the returned 25 per cent easily outstripped that. Then Cr McNally went one step further and brought forth the admission that when setting the ballot terms in the first place, council made an error in judgement.

To admit one’s mistake is a show of honour, and worthy of respect. Now as a result, with a simple chlorine filter we can once again bathe our children in town water when our tank runs dry, without fear of skin irritations and reactions.

As for our children’s dental health, we will simply plod along the old-fashioned way; brushing teeth, steering clear of soft drinks and eating only proper food. Simple as that. Everyone should try it. Thank you to SOSAG for putting up the fight, and to council for listening to the people!

Democracy in action AS ALMOST 20 people crowded the gallery to see democracy at work in their council location in Stanthorpe on 26 November, a fascinating power play was to evolve between Mayor Blundell who was fortunate enough to be within hearing distance of the council drones, while the gallery was not.

The gently put please speak up from the gallery was followed by the order of the boot from the mayor. Heroes would speak for the silenced ones, especially for the next election this writer was sure, but all was silence in the monkey’s court!

After doddering was cut short by the arrival of four of the biggest trays of food, we knew it was party time! No luck for the gallery though as the fluoride bogeyman was brought forth early so as to save starvation setting in.

Cr Pennisi moved to end fluoridation with news that could mean something like 23 per cent in New South Wales and 17 per cent in Townsville with proven illness side-effects could be the base to launch a class action against those who forced fluoride as a form of mass medication in the SDRC and would be unsustainable for council! The motion was seconded by Cr Bartley.

A former Lord Mayor of Brisbane warned in 2005 that the fluoride litigation risk was too great and gave a blunt warning to the then Warwick Shire Council “don’t do it”.

Some $10,000 wasted on a survey now has the barbed wire fence-sitter demanding fluoride tablets be handed out like lollies by council. Do these people live in the real world? Each and every government in this country is drowning in debt. The best farmers and graziers in the world have had their properties confiscated by banks.

Come the next council elections an administrator will be needed to save the nothing that this council will have left, and big spenders can join with departing water fluoridation experts like former Cr Hegarty, in search of more experts on training wheels to float their boat!

FREE Times sports reporter Neil “Casey” O’Connor has had a long association with many sporting clubs over the years.

And while his official capacity as Border Rugby League (BRL) chairman came to an end on 16 November, he had no plans to sit aimlessly on the sporting or community sidelines.

Mr O’Connor said he had enjoyed his time in the job, but admitted he would not miss the associated stresses. The passionate league supporter was approached to take on the position when Steve McEvoy stepped aside three years ago - a time when no one was interested in taking on the responsibility of keeping BRL alive.

“Small communities need their football clubs and I was determined to keep BRL going,” Mr O’Connor said.

“It has not always been easy - there have been challenges but I always acted with the best interests of the game and the BRL at heart.“ The talented and prolific sportsman, one of the few peo-

He wished in-coming president Dolly Bennett “every success for the future” and said he would miss the camaraderie of Central Division board members.

The spectacular grand final at Tenterfield this year and the inclusion of ladies league tag rate up there on his list of highlights.

While plans are in the wind to stop and smell the roses: “I have a boat which has not seen the water for many years because of other commitments, so I am looking forward to getting it back in the water if the drought ever breaks”, it might be short-lived.

Life will no doubt ramp up once again when the active Rotary Club member and current president-elect takes over from Fran Hodgson at the end of 2015.

Council seeks interest in business and industry forums Council’s Economic Development Unit (EDU) will hold a series of Business and Industry Forums in both Stanthorpe and Warwick, building on previous successful forums.

Manager Planning and Development Cecil Barnard said Council is aware that with many challenges and constant changes in the economic and political environments, successfully operating a business can be a daunting task.

More patrols, and hefty fines INGLEWOOD and Texas pet owners are being reminded to restrain their animals in public amid an increase in council patrols.

Goondiwindi Regional Council (GRC) is urging residents of the region to be responsible animal owners in the wake of a recent court decision on the Sunshine Coast, which saw a 68-year-old tourist slapped a $15,000 fine after his German shepherd attacked an 81-year-old pedestrian.

GRC mayor Graeme Scheu said the case showed penalties for failing to appropriately control animals could be hefty and reflected the general community’s mood that animal owners needed to take more responsibility for their pet’s actions.

Eric Taylor OAM is a most deserving recipient after many years of community service, which included secretary and trustee of the Woodenbong Public Hall for more than 60 years, volunteer cinema projectionist at the Woodenbong Public Hall Picture Theatre since the 1950s and the selector of movies for the last 40 years.

Secretary, treasurer and elder of the Woodenbong-Urbenville Uniting Church since the 1970s, Mr Taylor has also been a dedicated supporter of the Woodenbong Golf Club for many years.

He is also a co-founder and secretary of the Woodenbong Veterans Golf Association since 1994 and has been a Justice of the Peace for more than 50 years.

The award was presented to a “humbled” Mr Taylor by the then Governor of NSW, Dame Marie Bashir.

“When the letter arrived stating that I had been nominated for this award I was greatly humbled, realising that some of my peers who had given as much of their time to the Woodenbong community as I have had put my name forward,” Mr Taylor said.

“This award is for the Woodenbong community, for without their support I would not have

been able to achieve the tasks I am being honoured for.

“To be active in public life, certain people have to suffer personally, the major one in my instance is my best friend of 62 years and loving wife of 58 years, Shirley.

“Without her support, it would have been impossible for me to devote the time to the tasks I entered into. I am greatly honoured to bring this award to the Woodenbong community and I will continue to give of my time to make this a great place to live.”

Council has recently increased the length of time that animal control officers will be patrolling to include some early mornings and late evenings, to ensure that owners are meeting their obligations,” Cr Scheu said.

Council’s manager of building and regulatory services Phil Gall said the increased patrols were not a revenue-raising exercise.

Water parity for rural folk RURAL residents living in the Goondiwindi Regional Council area will now be able to access water for domestic use at the same charge as urban consumers.

Council has adopted a policy that will enable residents in drought-declared areas to purchase water at the same rate as those residents connected to council’s articulated water system.

Regional Council area was drought declared by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry on 1 March 2014.

What’s On Families on the right note VISITORS won’t see the worldfamous Osmonds or the Jackson Five, or Australia’s Jimmy Barnes and his troupe of musical offspring, but they will see some of Warwick’s own super family groups at Carols in the Park on Sunday, 14 December in Leslie Park.

Mums and daughters and dads and sons will take to the stage for an entertaining program of traditional carols and contemporary Christmas songs that will keep the children dancing and the oldies singing along.

Organiser Tracy Vellacott paid tribute to the cast of performers and musicians in this year’s carols line-up.

“For several years now, performer Erin Hilton has been joined on stage by her talented daughters Keely and Tegan but this year Melissa Williams’s daughter Ebony will take to the stage with her mum,” Ms Vellacott said.

“They’ve already put a sneak peek of one of their numbers up on Facebook and people are really excited to hear the full version, complete with the band instead of Melissa’s wooden spoons keeping the beat in her kitchen.”

“I know our boys discovered the fun of harmonising Christ-

mas carols in church last year and it was a magic moment for me,” she said.

Ms Vellacott’s boys, Ben, 18, Clayton, 16 and Morgan, 14 join their dad Phillip to make up the carols backing band, along with long-time friend and carols supporter Andrew Kucks on piano.

Lots of laughs along the way THE Toowoomba Hospice is holding its annual Clifton trivia night at the Club Hotel this Saturday.

Hospice promotions and fund-raising manager Mark Munro said it is all about putting the ‘fun’ back into fundraising.

“We like to have a few laughs as we are playing for fun and not a sheep station, so to speak,” he said.

“I find those who come to our trivia nights are there for fun and to support the hospice.”

The night will kick off from 7pm for a 7.30pm start.

Cost is $10 per person (six people to a team) with only 10 teams competing on the night.

Mr Munro said the trivia questions will have a festive flavour.

“There will be six rounds with an interval after the third

when a light supper will be served,” he said.

“As it is Christmas, I have arranged Christmas questions and prizes.”

Bright Christmas on the flats

Each year the show raises almost a thousand dollars for the Salvation Army Christmas appeal, and the generous family hopes to raise even more with a bigger and better light show this jolly season.

Christmas light watchers are able to see and hear the display on the half-hour from 7pm to 10pm every day until Christmas.

Residents are also encouraged to dig deep and drop a few gold coins in the donation box next to Santa’s countdown clock to help those less fortunate.

Suprisingly, Mr Bell said his electricty bill does not skyrocket after the show.

“Basically everything is LED so it is not particularly expensive,” he laughed.

He said assembling the lights was a collaborative affair and one which could not be

done without the help of family and neighbours.

Surch finds winning formula

By ALENA HIGGINS RONNIE Surch has always held a soft spot for the Aussie battler.

First time buyers and pensioners were the Warwick car dealer’s main focus from day one, and despite expanding significantly in the last year, he says nothing has changed.

Mr Surch started Budget Quality Cars from the ground up eight years ago with a yard containing just two second hand cars, having purchased the land at 53 Kenilworth Street seven years earlier.

Working full-time as a bobcat operator during the day, Mr Surch would dash off

to meet customers after hours and turn over stock.

At the same time he started paying off the land and poured any leftover cash back into the business.

These days he has an average of 80 vehicles in his yard for sale every week, employs seven local staff, and has never been busier.

He says his winning formula is simple: high turnover and low profit margins.

“It helps keep the cars coming and also helps the customers, too,” he said.

“We have a niche, we help the battler and it’s the support of local people that have

helped me get to where I am today.”

Nine months ago, Mr Surch brought another business called Auto Parts Warwick to complement the dealership.

Auto Parts Warwick supplies new car parts and accessories for the vehicles on sale, plus sells direct to the public.

To cap off an impressive year, just last week the businessman officially opened another site he purchased at the corner of Wood and Wallace streets which allows him to expand his range and exposure.

“People ask me how I

sell so many cars, and I tell them ‘it’s because we keep our overheads down and do everything in-house’,” Mr Surch said.

“We have a qualified mechanic on site and get our parts wholesale, and we pass on the savings.

“I also work a lot of hours,” he laughed.

While the quality of vehicles he now offers has improved “tenfold”, the prices, like Mr Surch himself, have remained well grounded.

“We’re sticking to the formula,” he said.

SEVERNLEA State School will welcome a new teacher next year.

Principal Cameron Brown said they had been lucky enough to secure the talents of Britt McCormick, who would teach the early year students.

“Britt is a fantastic teacher who has countless experience with the younger years and she will be a great addition to our staff for 2015,” Mr Brown said.

The news follows an exciting school camp, which saw the whole school travel to Leslie Dam to spend three days engaging in extracurricular activities.

Mr Brown said the students were involved in archery, catapulting, canoeing, hut making and raft building.

“It was great to be able to take the students away and introduce them to a different aspect of school and to realise how many ways they can be resilient and responsible,” he said.

“The students from Prep to Year 7 had a great time and came away with great memories.”

Severnlea will bid a fond farewell to both its Year 7 students and Year 6 students on 10 December.

The students will perform their own version of The Wizard of Oz for their parents, along with singing and dancing, at the graduation evening.

Get ready for summer storms SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council is encouraging everyone to be prepared for the summer storm season and is supporting the State Government’s current “Get Ready” campaign.

Council’s Disaster Management co-ordinator Mark Saunders said it was vital that Southern Downs residents had plans and made preparations for extreme weather events.

“As we have all seen in the past year, hailstorms and fires have hit various parts of the Southern Downs and surrounding areas causing crop and property damage. Our Queensland weather can be ex-

tremely unpredictable.

“What we can do is prepare ‘own our backyards’ just in case and that means simple things like storing drinking water and tinned food, clearing gutters and tidying up yards to remove potential missiles in case of high winds.

“The State Government has initiated its ‘Get Ready’ campaign because communities will always recover quicker if they have made the right preparations and plans for the storm season.

“Council has placed several important fact sheets and information on its website and

I’d encourage residents to look these up. It doesn‘t take long to get ready and it’s well worth it if a major weather event strikes.

“Council would be very pleased if none of our plans and preparations are needed but feel reassured if everyone knows they are ready for summer storms and extreme weather events,” he said.

What potential hazards could impact your community? Is there any information on Disaster Management Plans for these hazards?

Check with your local library and local council for information and plans.

Check with your local council about local warning systems, evacuation process and nominated evacuation routes.

Ask about emergency and evacuation plans at your workplace, school, and childcare providers. Check if they need details of your household emergency contacts.

What local support is available?

Ask for contact details of local support agencies and record these on your Emergency Plan.

If your household will need support to evacuate, find out what assistance is available from local council and support agencies.

Become familiar with weather warnings issued by the Bureau of Meteorology (www.bom. gov.au and phone services).

You may also need to prepare for evacuation.

Discuss where to go if you were unable to return home or if you have to leave your home.

Nominate two meeting places in case of an emergency, one nearby, another outside your neighbourhood, everyone can easily get to.

By ALENA HIGGINS SCRUMPTIOUS donuts, finger-licking hot chips, face painting, fairy floss and the big red man himself are just some of the attractions on offer at this year’s Christmas carnival in Tenterfield next week.

Organised by the local Lions, Rotary, and Quota clubs, the exciting 2014 festival bash will take place at Bruxner Park on Thursday 11 December, starting from 5.30pm.

Lions Club activity chairman Ken Poulsen said the night was a wonderful chance for families to bring the littles to see Santa and mingle with the community.

“The kiddies will be doing carols from 5.30pm to 6pm and Santa will arrive at approximately 8pm and usually hands out goodies,” Mr Poulsen said.

“It’s usually a pretty big night and the money goes to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.”

The combined clubs are offering raffle tickets to win a wheelbarrow full of groceries worth $500. And if you are struggling to fill up the car each week, second prize, a $100 fuel voucher will help lighten the load.

Mr Poulsen said he expected more than 500 people to take part in the event, provided it did not rain.

- Casey GREMLINS WAIT FOR DECISION THE Stanthorpe Gremlins should learn their fate for season 2015 on Friday evening. The club’s appeal against the decision of the BRL to refuse to grant them a release to join the TRL in the forthcoming season will be heard by a three-man panel from the QRL Central Division prior to the meeting of the full Central Division board on Saturday in Brisbane.

The decision is set to have major ramifications for both the TRL and BRL and will be eagerly anticipated by parties from all quarters.

THE world’s focus this past week has undoubtedly been on the tragic death of Phil Hughes.

We have witnessed unprecedented outpourings of grief across a spectrum so vast that it is quite amazing.

The death of Phil Hughes will reverberate across the cricket landscape for some time to come.

Down the track I suspect we will see some modifications to the batting helmet being tested. I cannot see that it’s necessary for there to be any knee-jerk reaction resulting in changes to the laws of the game that have served cricket and its players so well for so long.

What I can see is a new generation of youngsters who have a hero to aspire to become and there could be no greater role model for a young cricketer.

The most poignant of tributes I think came from the unknown junior cricketer who reportedly on the weekend retired on 37 because he had “completed Hughesy’s century”. Who would have thought? I suspect that this remarkable young man has left a lasting legacy that we will see through our current juniors who will now retire not on 50 runs but 63, his final score, as a mark of respect.

His death is set to inspire a generation of young cricketers to be the best they can be.

The decision of CA to reschedule the First Test is the biggest decision I can recall in cricket. No doubt they will come in for plenty for flak from some quarters - probably those people more inclined to be impressing their guests in a corporate box than watching the action in the centre.

Now that the second saddest day in cricket (the funeral of Hughes) has passed, it is time for the caravan to roll on and the focus of the media and the players to return to the national game. It is after all what Phillip Hughes would want; it was what he lived for.

Given the circumstances I think it is quite fitting that the return to Test cricket will be at the Adelaide Oval, Hughes’ adopted home.

And while we all know different players will handle this occasion in different ways, no-one should forget what Sean Abbott has to deal with.

The first ball of the first day of the first Test 2014 will be an emotional event. I hope that uppermost in everyone’s mind will be Hughesy’s simple philosophy of “where else would you rather be than playing cricket for your country”.

Sunday is the shootout for men and women - tee off is from 8.30 am. If nothing else it will be interesting to watch and wonder at the sight of the 19 different golf swings teeing off on the first tee. Vision could even find its way to Youtube. You just never know.

LOCAL CRICKETERS PAUSE TO PAY RESPECT LIKE cricketers right across the nation last weekend, senior and junior players in the Stanthorpe and Warwick paused to pay tribute to Phil Hughes prior to the start of their games last weekend as all players wore black armbands in a mark of respect.

Local Sport GOOD SUPPORT FOR WALLANGARRA EVENT A SOLID field turned out last Saturday for the Wallangarra Club’s stroke event. The eventual winner was Dennis McMeniman with Alan Lutter snapping at his heels. A. Pearce took pin shots on 3/15. McMeniman and Lutter were in the thick of things, claiming the pin shots at 11 and nine Word around the traps suggest that McMeniman shot on 11 was a thing of pure beauty.

This Saturday the battle is on for the Monthly Medal and Mug of Mugs.

There will also be a general meeting held after the presentations take place on Saturday. Need more information on the Wallangarra Golf club follow them on their Facebook page.

Picture: TERRY WEST A good performance from the Valleys bowling attack saw a steady fall of Souths wickets.

Souths batsmen were restricted to only 89 runs.

In reply Valleys made short work of the required run total. Led by opening batsman John Fletcher it took Valleys only 11 overs to reach the target.

Fletcher scored a quick fire 40 runs which included several boundaries and a six. The game looked to be in the bag when Fletcher was dismissed with the score at 2/77. There were a couple of nervous moments as Valleys lost two wickets for the addition of no runs when Ben Staley had Crome caught behind and Anthony Marino was bowled but the additional runs were soon accounted for giving Valleys the points and a much needed bonus point.

The battle on Sheahan Oval was much closer as Wanderers tried to chase down RSL’s total of 152.

RSL captain and opening bat Sam Dowie helped himself to a half century as his side applied pressure to the Wanderers bowling attack.

Luke Brady also played a pivotal role in the innings He came to the crease with the score on 2/76 in the 10th over and made sure he was there at the end of the innings. Brady finished not out 38.

Wanderers suffered an early loss when opener Yates was out cheaply in only the second over.

Opening partner Tim Harslett was out shortly after and Wanderers looked to be in trouble at 2/23.

A steadying hand was needed and A. Hill stepped up. He took the score to 117 before he was caught

by Luke Brady off the bowling of Anthony Di Bella with the game in the balance.

The RSL bowlers applied more pressure. Peter Patti added another 19 runs but Wanderers fell 17 runs shy of the total. Garland (2), Dowie Becker and Di Bella were the wicket takers for RSL. The win propels RSL to 34 points on the competition ladder well ahead of their nearest rivals Valleys (13 points).

FRONT NINE POPULAR SPORTERS played the front nine of the Stanthorpe course last Sunday and Keith Green revelled in the conditions to notch another Sporters’ win. Runner-up was another up and coming golfer from the junior ranks, Jaidyn Milne who also picked up the Pro-Pin. The rundowns went to Jim McPherson and Nic Casey.

SUMMIT BOWLERS ON THE ROAD THE Summit Bowls Club was well represented in the Don Sengal Fours Day at the Peranga club last weekend. Len Covill, Gaye Wilmot, Judi Holmes and Paul Zamprogno bowled well to score 3 +22.

They finished runners-up just three shots behind the winning team skipped by Geoff Gill (3+24) from South Toowoomba.

While some members went touring others preferred social bowls on the greens at the Summit which were turned out in style once again by Dale Barker and Ray Spiller.

Dale Barker, David Parker and Brian Brown defeated Michael Sweeney, Quinton Stanley and Attilio Zamprogno 22-18 in a close game. Artie White and Tyler Sweeney had a comfortable 2811 win over John Harslett and Alex Mattiazzi 11.

A reminder that the Summit club will be celebrating their Christmas party this Saturday.

BIG WEEKEND FOR REP CRICKETERS STANTHORPE cricketers came away from the local derby against Warwick with a comprehensive win in the Mitchell Shield but the Davis Shield social game went down to the wire and Warwick came away with a win in the Hendry Bourke trophy.

In the Davis Shield a fine opening knock 68 from Chris Williams put the visitors in a good position. He was bowled by Collins with the score at 5/106. Some solid partnership followed as Stanthorpe piled on the runs. Simon Mascadri ensured the Stanthorpe tail wagged he finished the innings unbeaten on 64. His innings was peppered with boundaries and a six as he took to the Warwick bowling attack. At the close of the innings Stanthorpe had set the Warwick side a hefty 217-run chase.

The opening partnership of Ross Thorley (42) and Lachlan Gross (77) got Warwick off to a good start and at 2/116 it was game on.

The Warwick innings stalled with the score at 5/154 and they lost three wickets without troubling the scorer.

As wickets tumbled Carter Bilbrough scored freely, adding much-needed runs. With only one ball remaining he scored the two runs required for a narrow win.

Toby Culhman (4/43) was the best of the Stanthorpe bowlers. He was well supported by Brendan Drayton.

MITCHELL SHIELD WIN IN the Mitchell Shield game played at Slade Oval, Warwick won the toss but failed to capitalise on their decision to bat first scoring just 111 runs.

A good bowling performance by the Stanthorpe bowlers was matched by a good performance in the field.

Warwick lost opener Jamie Saunders for six and found themselves 2/8 when Hayden Lanza despatched Michael Bourke for a duck.

Paul Cantwell and Cameron Peterson took the score to 5/66 before Duane Lihou and Sam Dowie combined to dismiss Cantwell. Peterson batted well taking the score to 96 before he was also dismissed by Lihou.

The Stanthorpe bowling attack of Lupton Lanza Lihou and Anderson had restricted the score to a very gettable 111.

Duane Lihou took three wickets from his fiveover spell and was the most successful of the bowlers.

Lupton was again economical finishing with two wickets from his nine overs for only 17 runs.

Damian Anderson bowled tightly. His 10-over spell included five maidens and two wickets.

There was plenty of purpose about the Stanthorpe openers Ben Staley and Hayden Lanza as they pushed the score to 86 before the loss of the first wicket. Hayden Lanza was 32 when he was caught by Jamie Saunders off the bowling of Michael Bourke.

His opening partner and captain Ben Staley pushed the score along to 93 before he too was caught off a ball from Michael Bourke.

Luke Brady was the only other Stanthorpe batsman to lose his wicket as the visitors coasted to an easy win in only the 26th over. Michael Bourke took all three wickets for Warwick.

It was a disappointing result for the Warwick side who have won the past two Mitchell shield competitions but will be struggling to make the final this year. In stark contrast Stanthorpe have now made it two wins from two outings.

STANTHORPE LOCAL ACCEPTS TRL POSITION POPULAR Stanthorpe sporting administrator Michael Jensen has accepted a position with the TRL as Operations Manager. Jensen said early in the week that he was thrilled to have been offered the position after two years working to assist an array of Stanthorpe clubs with his role with the Stanthorpe Sports Association.

The Toowoomba-based position will see Jensen commuting between the two centres on a weekly basis.

Jensen expects to know more regarding the exact nature of the position this weekend following the QRL Central Division AGM and board meeting in Brisbane. For Jensen, who has a deep passion for the game of rugby league, this is a dream position and he is looking forward to assisting clubs in the TRL to develop and improve.

He takes a wealth of knowledge in the area of grant funding to the position and his expertise will be a big loss to the Stanthorpe sporting community.

Expect to see Mick Jensen back in Stanthorpe regularly as he supports his boys who play for the club he holds dear, the Gremlins.

Jensen takes up his new position on January 5 and says he is looking forward to the challenge of the new role.

WALLABIES LICKING THEIR WOUNDS THE Wallabies returned home with their tails between their legs after a disastrous spring tour - their worst since 2005.

While Michael Cheika and senior players are publicly saying things are fine and on track for the World Cup, there is obviously lots of work to be done.

Cheika has an unwavering belief that the Wallabies can turn their game around in time to be a contender.

The Wallabies scrummage was shambolic and has been the consistent weak link in the Wallabies game. There is no easy fix. Australia fortunately has a great line-up at the back - Kurtley Beale, Quade Cooper, Israel Folau, Tevita Kuridrani and Adam Ashley-Cooper. They’d give any team nightmares if the forwards give them time and space to work with.

There seems to be a lot of flair but not a lot of grunt up front. If the Wallabies could add some much-needed firepower to their forwards they would be an awesome attacking outfit. Big test for Michael Cheika.

In his defence Cheika hadn’t met two thirds of the Wallabies squad a day before the team flew to London in October. He used 32 players in five games to test those he didn’t know.

The next 10 months could prove very interesting in Australian Rugby.

SOUTHERN DOWNS RIFLE CLUB WE hosted the Darling Downs Rifle Club Prize Meeting at The Risdon Range on 30 November with about 80 competitors contesting several different classes and competition styles.

Competitors were from as far away as Bundaberg, Dalby, Goondiwindi, Gold Coast, Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and Kyogle. Our shooters hotly contested most events and took away a good spread of wins and positions. All agreed that the Darling Downs Club put up a good series of competitions and the day flowed well.
