SPEAK OUT... CHALLENGE FAMILY VIOLENCE 1 December 2014

A Star News Group Publication

With 1 in 5 people in Australia living with a disability, plus their carers and families being affected, it seems strange that so little is known about it.

What do people with disability do every day? What sort of jobs are there in this sector? These are the reasons why we created WallaraTV – to lift the lid on disability and to capture and tell the stories that we see every day right across our Service. We also knew that the biggest thing holding people with different abilities back from being involved in their community and having productive social roles or jobs is attitudes and lack of understanding. So by capturing stories from across our Service and sharing them through our YouTube channel (we now have more than 90 stories and 30,000 views) the aim is to educate through entertainment. TV Specials are another exciting platform for us to package our stories into a 30 minute program, reach more people and have more impact. We believe these stories are important and they help us reflect on our own

lives and how we would cope in their shoes. Our events and activities are also captured and celebrated on video to showcase our staff, our partnership and more importantly the people we support. In today’s world where you can’t open the newspaper or turn on the TV without a bad or sad news story, WallaraTV is going into homes around the country and sharing our good news stories of everyday people with different abilities and changing perceptions, one viewer at a time.

I hope you enjoy the stories about our Service in this special edition publication. I look forward to welcoming you to the official opening of our Pop Up Shop at Dandenong Plaza on Friday 5th December. Best Wishes, Phil Hayes-Brown Wallara CEO Wallara acknowledges and thanks community television service, Channel 31 for supporting Wallara in celebrating people with different abilities.
