THE Key to the Southern Downs is now taking pride of place at Australian netball star Laura Geitz’s home after a presentation at Allora on Saturday.

Southern Downs Regional Council mayor Peter Blundell presented the Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist and Australian Netball Team captain with the "key to the region" as part of a special Laura Geitz Celebration Day at the Allora Sports Museum.

Before the event, Allora-born Laura said she was excited about attending the celebration day and though the key had been described to her, she was keen to see it in its presentation casing.

“This will be a great honour and an opportunity to meet Southern Downs people,” she said.

“There’s no better feeling than having recognition from your home town, and I’m very grateful to receive the key,” she said.

After the presentation ceremony, council hosted a special celebration afternoon tea at the Commercial Hotel, just over the road from the museum. The Allora Men’s Shed group held a sausage sizzle next to the hotel for anyone wanting to stay for an afternoon barbecue.

Cr Glyn Rees, who lives in Allora and has known Laura and her family for many years, was master of ceremonies.

He said it was a proud moment for Allora and for Southern Downs Regional Council.

By ALENA HIGGINS TENTERFIELD has been named the ‘Perfect Heritage Town’ by one of the state’s most widely read dailies.

The Sydney Morning Herald Newspaper (SMH) listed Tenterfield as one of six locations in its Travel Guide to the best Australian Towns, which was published online and in the paper’s weekend edition earlier this month.

Fairfax Media’s travel arm, Traveller, assembled a panel of six well-traversed Aussies who identified Tenterfield as being at the epicentre of one of the country’s most significant historical areas.

Tenterfield Visitors Information Centre co-coordinator Lara Flanagan was bowled over by the accolade.

“To get that really high level recognition is amazing for the town,” she gushed.

Child airlifted after dog attack A FOUR-YEAR-OLD girl was airlifted by helicopter on Friday night after she was attacked by a dog in Stanthorpe.

The young girl was bitten on the face and suffered lacerations to her nose and cheek.

The dog was not a pet of the family, however it was believed to have been seen in the area prior to the attack.

A helicopter crew was tasked to pick up the girl from Stanthorpe Hospital shortly after 9pm on Friday night.

She was flown in a stable condition to the Mater Children’s Hospital for surgery to treat the lacerations to her face.The dog’s breed is unknown at this stage.

Stanthorpe Police informed the Free Times on Monday that it was not involved in responding to the incident.

Calls to Mater Children’s Hospital to find out the condition of the girl were not returned.

State-wide ban to move smokers off the streets SMOKERS in the Southern Downs may soon be banned from lighting up at public transport waiting points and pedestrian malls.

Uniform state-wide smoke-free spaces are one step closer for Queensland, following a Parliamentary Committee’s recommendation in response to calls from Cancer Council Queensland.

Queensland Parliament’s Health and Community Services Committee handed down its report on 18 November, recommending state-wide

smoking bans at public transport waiting points and pedestrian malls.

Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift commended the Parliamentary Committee for its action to protect the public from harm.

“Smoke free spaces will protect people from the harmful effects of smoking, encourage more smokers to quit, and prevent more young people from taking up this lethal habit,” Ms Clift said.

“Government action on smoking has been

strong, but smoke free spaces are desperately needed, and we have urged the State Government to act quickly."

Currently, there are 500,000 adult smokers in the Sunshine State.

Co-founder of Queenslanders for Safe Drinking Water Merilyn Haines said the Queensland Government routinely surveyed a small number of adults in its water fluoridation surveys which were then used to represent the sentiments of the whole state.

Ms Haines placed the current survey in the context of previous one. She said the Queensland Government surveyed just 3000 Queenslanders in late 2004 to represent all four million Queensland residents, showing a 60.3 per cent support for fluoridation. In 2007, she said, the former Premier Anna

Bligh used this to force fluoridation on all of Queensland.

In this light, she said, the Southern Downs survey should be very significant when 2404 Southern Downs households participated in the survey that was to represent 8939 Southern Downs fluoridated water connections.

“It would be a ridiculous situation if council paid $10,000 to do a survey - had very clear results and then tried to ignore the results,” Ms Haines said.

Councillors were expected to discuss the survey results yesterday during council’s general meeting in Stanthorpe where they were being recommended to consider the survey invalid.

Mr Laing said it was important that all residents familiarise themselves with their bushfire survival plan, or make one now, if they have not already.

“It is essential for all residents and travellers in the region to have a Bushfire Survival Plan to detail exactly how you will prepare and what action you will take if threatened by a bushfire,” he said.

He said the plan must be in writing, practiced regularly and take into consideration the ages and physical capabilities of everyone in the household including children and the elderly.

“Once a Bushfire Survival Plan is in place it is important for everyone in the home to know what action to take if a bushfire approaches,” he said.

“During a bushfire event, QFES will issue community warnings to inform residents of essential information and it is important that residents understand the various levels of warnings and what actions they

RECENT fire activity has kept emergency services busy across southern Queensland and firefighters are asking residents to remain vigilant and report bushfires immediately.

Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ) South Western regional manager Lawrence Laing said despite recent rain, conditions across areas of south western Queensland were still quite dry and small fires had the potential to spread quickly.

“Bushfire season is well and truly underway now and it’s important that all residents remain vigilant in reporting any fires and take precautionary measures to reduce fire risk in their own activities,” he said.

“One spark from welding or power tools could start a bushfire, so it’s essential that anyone undertaking these kind of activities has the correct equipment on hand and appropriate resources to put out a fire if one does start.”

SURVEY statistics used to mandate compulsory state-wide water fluoridation are being brandished to convince Southern Downs Regional Council to listen to the majority of its survey respondents.

However, it must be noted fewer than 50 per cent of those polled returned the questionnaire in the midOctober survey to ratepayers.

The survey asked if they wanted the practice discontinued, having previously agreed in June to stop adding fluoride to the region’s water supplies if more than 50 per cent of returns indicated that was their preference.

However, only 26.9 per cent across the district responded, ac-

cording to council’s November business paper.

In Stanthorpe, 31.6 per cent responded, while only 25.2 per cent of the combined Warwick, Allora and Yangan water customers sent their surveys back.

Markedly, out of those responded, 70 per cent in Stanthorpe and 64 per cent in Warwick wanted water fluoridation stopped.

Chairman of SOS the voice of Ratepayers and Residents of Southern Downs Council Bob Johnson said though council might claim the figure was not enough, the fact that two thirds of respondents wanted the practice discontinued “cannot be ignored”.

THE first three-storey building constructed in Warwick since the hospital will be unveiled next week, marking the final stages of Queensland’s sweeping education reforms.

From 2015, Year 7 will become the first year of high school in Queensland, and to accommodate the influx of students, Warwick State High School has received a brand new building.

Equipped with all the latest mod cons, the 16-classroom facility will house the incoming Year 7 students as well as the incoming Year 8 students, principal Cheryl Bullion said.

“We are very fortunate to receive the facility as part of the Flying Start agenda,” she said.

“It has been designed in such a way that it will not only have single classrooms, but there are also collaborative spaces and flexible learning areas, and areas that can open into multiple classrooms that allow teachers to utilise the space for the best pedagogy.”

Moving Year 7 to high school follows other major changes, such as the introduction of a Prep year in 2007 and raising the school starting age by six months in 2008.

The change will also bring Queensland schools in line with the rest of the country, except for South Australia.

“We were very fortunate to have had a good working relationship with the contract builders, McNabs, and Project Management firm, Davis Langdon.”

As well as the building, the school has received two new multi-purpose courts, which replace the old ant bed tennis courts, and three new tennis courts which take pride of place on Hamilton Oval.

To prevent overwhelming the newcomers, Year 7 and Year 8 students will only be exposed to three or four core teachers and a dedicated “safe” junior secondary area, known as the Cunningham Oval precinct, will be established for students in Years 7, 8 and 9.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Education, Training and Employment said up to 1300 extra teachers would be recruited for secondary settings in 2015.

“A register of interest for these teaching positions in Junior Secondary settings opened in September 2013 for current primary teachers as well as preservice and aspiring teachers,” she said.

The public is invited to see the facility for themselves during an open afternoon on 3 December from 3.30pm to 5.30pm.

Under the state-wide initiative, a patient may have to travel to have surgery if their local hospital of health service (HHS) cannot provide treatment within the clinically recommended time - 30 days for urgent cases, 90 days for semi-urgent cases and 365 for non-urgent surgery.

This poses questions about the potential impact on patients in larger centres, such as Toowoomba, who could be squeezed out to cater for the increased demand and be forced to travel to receive surgery themselves.

DARLING Downs residents who have been waiting for elective surgery will now receive it in the medically recommended time with a new Australianfirst Wait Time Guarantee announced on Monday.

From 1 February 2015, all eligible Queensland patients will receive their elective (non-emergency) surgery within the medically recommended time or be offered the next available appointment in a public or private hospital at no cost.

Southern Downs MP and Minister for Health Lawrence Springborg said the new Queensland health guarantee, modelled on the world leading health systems of Scandinavia, would provide an assurance to tens of thousands of Queenslanders. “With the new Wait Time Guarantee we can now ensure that every patient will have their surgery as planned by maximizing access to the state’s network of hospitals, doctors and nurses whether they are in the public, non-government or private sector,� Mr Springborg said.

Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service chief executive Dr Peter Bristow said there had been a strong focus on reducing the elective surgery waiting lists and the number of patients waiting longer than clinically recommended. “Our board has had a very deliberate strategy to cut through the waiting lists and has funded extra staff to schedule more theatre operating time, including weekend surgery sessions,�

Dr Bristow said. “In March 2012 there were 319 patients waiting longer than clinically recommended. By September this year we had reduced that to just two patients."

THE Carnell Raceway, a significant local landmark, honours the life of a talented and well respected race car driver. That driver was my brother, Max Carnell. The negativity and criticism surrounding the raceway is hurtful, often misinformed and amounts to the selfish attitude of a small number in the community.

Max died in a road accident a short distance from Stanthorpe in November 1969 when he was 20 years old, the same year the first committee of the Stanthorpe and District Sporting Car Club (SDSCC) met. The following year saw the first official race meeting, the result of a hugely committed group of local businesses, contractors, members and individuals, who worked vigorously and tirelessly for months, to achieve their end.

My parents, Roy and Gwen Carnell, were humbled and honoured, when asked by the SDSCC if the track could be named Carnell Raceway, in memory of their late son.

In 1969, no development was in the immediate vicinity of the track site and council approval was given. Since the early 1990s the track has been continually improved into the first-class track enthusiasts enjoy today. Why now are there complaints from local residents?

Why did council approve housing development in this area? Why did residents choose to live there when they knew a raceway existed? In fact, a number of people chose to build houses near the stench dump (next door to the raceway site), where rubbish was burning almost every day at the time. Stanthorpe has become a tourist hub, not only for its fruits and wine, but also its climate and events staged here. Many thousands of dollars are distributed throughout our town each time a race day is held at Carnell Raceway.

The motels are booked out and the eateries do a roaring trade. Surely the unreasonable objectors can ‘tolerate’ the noise for a limited amount of time. It’s not like our town is awash with unlimited disposable income. Our town needs to capitalise on all the tourist dollars available. Just look at the number of the empty shops. I often wonder how some of the objectors would feel if their sons or daughters were keenly interested in motorsports.

This conflict has been ongoing since 1996 and still no resolution has been found. I believe it is the duty of the elected council representatives to achieve an outcome - it has been allowed to get so out of hand. Carnell raceway has been purposebuilt for motor racing enthusiasts in our district and for the wider racing community. It is said to be an excellent learner driver track. Why not develop programs with our schools to teach our teenagers to drive safely.

Until now I have chosen not to use the press to air my views as I hoped this conflict would be resolved. This matter is deeply upsetting for my family. My parents would ‘turn in their grave’ if they knew of the ongoing dispute surrounding the legacy of their late son.

I AM writing in regards to Richard Bird’s opinion, published on the 20 November. Firstly, I would like to suggest that he makes an appointment with the local optometrist. As from my knowledge there have been no recent complaints mentioned in the media of the following businesses: “Denny’s Engineering, Trains, Glen Mar Fuels, The Farmers or Jenco Seeds”.

I strongly disagree with your thesis, in regards to the excessive noise and pollution that we are

experiencing. My family has lived here for over 32 years and we have never had any complaints until Grain X started their business and operations. Our residence is in the exact same location, when the previous businesses of the Wheat State Board and Graincorp were operating, on the very same grounds as Grain X does. The Wheat State Board and Graincorp had trees surrounding the perimeter line of their property and my family had no objections to their operations or location as they operated at a tolerable level with minimal noise, dust, chemicals and absolutely no glare.

Richard, I do support job growth in our rural community, however, I am profoundly opposed to the location of Grain X. This is a vast company which has permission from the SDRC to operate 24/7. If you actually lived in the near vicinity, as we do, you would have an understanding of how our lives have been affected by the ongoings of this business.

Grain X should be operating in an industrial location or farming area and not within a mere 250 metres of the town centre, which is a residential area.

Just to broaden your knowledge or that of anyone else who struggles with the concept of a residential area, “A residential area is a land use in which housing predominates, as opposed to industrial and commercial areas. The location of Grain X was closed down for any business purpose since the 1990s; the SDRC should not have given permission for a company such as Grain X to re-open in 2011. Richard, can you please stick to the facts and cut out all the nonsense that you have mentioned.

No to fluoride SOUTHERN Downs Council has received a resounding no to compulsory fluoridation of water.

More than 66 per cent of Warwick area respondents and 70 per cent of Stanthorpe area respondents to the council survey voted against forced fluoridation - this despite council ignoring 30 per cent of water users who are renters, and water ratepayers who used no water because they prefer to use their rainwater tanks, and people from out of town who have to buy town water because of the long dry and empty tanks, and others who thought the survey was junk mail and binned it.

Council will claim that a 27 per cent return was not enough. Anyone with a smidgen of common sense and an understanding of people would know that 27 per cent return in a non-compulsory survey is incredibly large. Of the 27 per cent of forms returned, two thirds said no to forced fluoridation of their drinking water.

Anyone with a smidgen of knowledge of statistics would know that a 66 per cent to 70 per cent result against compulsory fluoridation is of enormous significance. It should not be ignored.

It means that a highly significant percentage of the population sampled by council say no to forced fluoridation of their water. Scientifically that means about 67 per cent or two-thirds of the whole population is against forced fluoridation and all it implies.

There are better ways to get fluoride to the people who want it. We would recommend that councillors take it out now before the population decides to take them out of the picture at the next election. The people of Stanthorpe and Warwick areas have spoken. Will the councillors listen?

They have less than 18 months to get it right.

What’s happening?

WELL may we all ask what is going on with our local league? What with the QRL Boundary Review and all the rumours that the Border Rugby League would be gone etc etc. The answer is we are still the Border Rugby League and have changed direction with a completely new leadership team elected at the AGM last Sunday the 23rd. There are no less than four clubs involved on the executive, with the new chairman being Dolly Bennett of the Inglewood club. We should all congratulate them as they will lead the BRL very well.

I was proud to be an observer and see such enthusiasm by BRL club representatives who stepped forward to fill all executive positions.

The BRL clubs, league and the rugby league community will be better for it as there is strong leadership and now stability. I was also impressed to see that several clubs have has a change of leadership after their AGM. At the BRL AGM we also welcomed the Millmerran Club who applied and were welcomed unanimously as the new BRL team of the future. They bring a strong rugby league tradition and will be well suited to the BRL A grade from the Toowoomba C Grade. They lost the Grand Final by two points to a stacked Pittsworth A Grade and Reserves side.

As we all know Stanthorpe had made application to leave the BRL and enter the TRL. They asked at the AGM for a clearance. After lengthy constructive debate by all club representatives regarding the pros and cons, the vote was nine to three to reject Stanthorpe’s application to leave the BRL. Local Rugby League is alive and getting stronger and the 2015 shapes as one of the best yet.

With six confirmed sides and hopefully Inglewood to return, we will see rugby league played week in, week out.

Why won't they listen?

COUNCIL feels now that it can ignore the outcome of the fluoride survey. This in spite of the facts that 30 per cent of Stanthorpe water users (ie renters) were not surveyed; this in spite of people with water connections, which they pay for, but who don’t use water not being surveyed; this in spite of some people binning the survey because they thought it was more council junk mail, not being surveyed. How can such a flawed process be taken into account?

In Cassowary Coast’s fluoride survey, 300-350 participants was considered by statisticians to be statistically significant in Innisfail’s population of 13,000 i.e. 2.7 per cent. Statistically speaking a 50 per cent return is highly improbable.

A two per cent result of a sample of population is statistically significant, statistically speaking.

So according to these statistics, 50 per cent of 50 per cent, which is the criteria used by council, is totally unrealistic and with all the above exclusions in place, totally unachievable.

The fact that such a flawed survey had the results that 16.3 percent of surveys were returned in Warwick and 22.2 per cent of those returned in Stanthorpe is surely very significant and should be enough to make council change its mind on the addition of fluoride to water in both areas.

“What we find is that the bulk items fill up all the bins resulting in other users depositing their household waste on the ground. This constitutes illegal dumping and can result in infringement fines.”

The clean-up at the Forest Springs Waste Facility will require a bobcat and an additional pick-up by JJ Richards.

“This week council also found that at the Greymare Waste Facility tyres, tanks and a ute rack were thrown in the bins,” Mr O’Brien said.

Bank in the making SURVEYS calling for Granite Belt residents, traders and community groups to show their support for Stanthorpe Regional Community Bank branch will be dropped into letterboxes this week.

Community members across the Granite Belt have so far pledged $705,000 in their commitment to become shareholders in the locally owned branch.

Steering Committee chairman Nev Winter said the surveys were important and gave the community the chance to have their say.

He said 5395 surveys would be mailed out in this week to measure the general level of awareness, understanding and support for a Community Bank branch within the Granite Belt community.

“Key to the success of the survey will be establishing whether the community is willing to support the proposed new branch by committing to move across their banking business,” Mr Winter said.

“By contacting the Bendigo agency in Rogers Street, customers would find that our interest rates and fees are very competitive and favourable.”

“Becoming a shareholder is one fantastic way people can support our Community Bank branch, but there are other ways people can throw their weight behind this campaign too.

“Just by doing something as simple as their day-to-day banking at this new branch, local residents can help support a community-run business that will support them in return.”

Mr Winter said the community survey would hopefully reaffirm the support shown to date and determine whether a Community Bank branch in Stanthorpe was viable, to then move to a public share offer.

COMMUNITY members are being urged to dob in dodgy disposers after council staff faced a mammoth cleanup task last week.

Southern Downs Regional Council is hoping against a repeat performance of the huge mess left at the Forest Springs Waste Facility.

Council’s environmental health manager Tim O’Brien said staff were in disbelief when faced with overflowing bins filled with bulky items and other rubbish.

“As the photos show council staff found fencing wire, posts, scrap metal, weeds, boxes, bags of rubbish, plastic, tarpaulins and bottles in and around the bins,” he said.

“Staff members have advised this is not the first time it has happened.

A STANTHORPE resident who is passionate about the area’s natural environment is being sought to fill a vacancy on the local catchment’s river management board.

Department of Natural Resources and Mines executive director Wally Kearnan said the Stanthorpe Shire River Improvement Trust was seeking a new community member to help lead the protection and improvement of the area’s rivers.

“The Stanthorpe Shire River Improvement Trust was founded in 1986 and is a statutory body charged with the responsibility for the protection and improvement of streams and flood mitigation in the local catchment system,” Mr Kearnan said.

“This includes carrying out works to improve flow of water in the Severn River and Pikes Creek catchment systems in order to prevent erosion, provide flood mitigation and enhance riverine environmental values.

“The trust is this year undertaking bed and bank stabilisation works on Quartpot Creek, controlling weed species and working to protect key public infrastructure at various locations.

“We’re looking for a member of the local community that has experience with natural resources management systems in the Stanthorpe catchment, an understanding of financial arrangements and statutory requirements and can provide strategic project planning support to the trust.”

Mr Kearnan said the trust had three members with a vacancy currently opened for the fourth member.

The successful candidate would serve a twoand-a-half year term and become the second community member on the trust.

Members of Headspace Warwick Advisory Youth, otherwise known as HeadWAYcrew, are aged 12 to 25 and have the opportunity to have their say on youth issues and direct youth mental health services in Warwick.

Centre manager Sophia McLucas said the youth group had been in “hiatus for a while" but was back up and running with groups of students from

A two-and-a-half hour program of traditional and contemporary carols will be presented by crowd favourites and up-and-coming performers, with Santa stopping by at 6pm, before the stage show commences at 6.30pm.

Ms Vellacott said one of the biggest social events on the annual calendar was also an opportunity for champion community organisations to help feed hungry families as they enjoyed a night out.

Members of the Warwick Rotary and Lions Clubs, together with the team from Community Disaster Relief will provide burgers, hot chips, a sausage sizzle, fairy floss, popcorn and other summer favourites.

Coffee, ice-cream and a good old Aussie pie will also be available. Children are being encouraged to come dressed as one of Santa’s little helpers in support of the Rotary Club’s Christmas dress-up competition. President Darren Bray said that the Rotary team got a special thrill out of the children’s excitement on the night.

A TWO-VEHICLE crash occurred at the intersection of Creek and Railway streets on 17 November, resulting in damage but fortunately no injuries.

What’s On Clint opens restful Laurels THOSE who would like the opportunity to visit an inspiring Southern Downs garden while supporting Beyondblue - the charity that helps Australians when they’re at their most vulnerable - should mark Saturday 29 and Sunday, 30 November on their calendar.

That is when talented garden designer Clint Kenny opens The Laurels, his awardwinning garden in Warwick, for the very last time.

While beautiful camphor laurel trees have graced the historic home for over a century, Mr Kenny has totally transformed the garden since acquiring the property five years ago.

“It’s been the perfect place to draw lots of my favourite design elements together,” Mr Kenny said.

Now both aesthetic and productive, the popular garden has attracted thousands of visitors on previous open weekends.

There’s so much to explore - elegant, formal garden rooms, a productive kitchen garden, a tree house and children’s garden, and a rustic but enchanting, ‘chook boudoir’ - home to rare breeds of poultry.

Old-fashioned perennials, neatly clipped formal hedges and bespoke garden structures contribute to the garden’s ambience.

Mr Kenny said he often recycles materials when he can, and prefers to incorporate local elements such as stone, gravel and timber.

“These give gardens a sense of place - and often they tell a great story,” he said.

While he designs gardens in various Australian growing regions, Mr Kenny’s Warwick garden showcases plants that survive local conditions - cold winters, hot summers, and often periods of extended dry.

Each day at noon, Mr Kenny will speak on the principles of design incorporated at The Laurels and will be ready to answer visitors’ questions throughout the weekend.

Visitors will be able to purchase plants, local produce, and refreshments and they will also enjoy the display of horse drawn vehicles.

The Laurels at 54 Locke Street, Warwick, is open Saturday 29 and Sunday, 30 November from 9am to 4pm daily.

Entry is $5.

AS the debate raged on Tuesday as to whether or not Michael Clarke would be fit for the first Test at the Gabba, the cricketing world was rocked by the horrific injury to NSW batsman Phil Hughes who this season is playing for South Australia.

Hughes mistimed a hook shot and was felled by the delivery bowled by NSW paceman and former team-mate Sean Abbott.

As this paper goes to print the gutsy batsman, who was in line for a recall to the Australian squad, is in an induced coma in a Sydney hospital following surgery and is fighting for his life.

The incident has sent shock waves through the cricket community. Hughes, who burst on to the Australia cricket scene as a 20-year-old in a series against South Africa, hails from Macksville in Northern NSW is a popular bloke in cricket circles.

When Hughes debuted for Australia, I recall a discussion I had with the late Stanthorpe publican Neil Johnson, who knew the Hughes family and the youngster well. He was full of praise for the unassuming but cheeky lad from Macksville who had so much talent to offer.

After an impressive debut Hughes went on to become the youngest player to score centuries in both innings of a Test when he cracked 115 and 160 in the second Test against South Africa at Kingsmead. A prodigious talent Hughes has played 26 Tests but has been unable to cement his spot in the Australian side.

He had a penchant for playing from outside the line of the ball and scoring from slashes through the off-side field but it often proved his undoing.

He was on the cusp of kick-starting his career in the baggy green - thought by many to be a shoe-in for the upcoming Gabba Test with Clarke almost certain to be unfit despite being named in the squad.

While the thoughts and prayers of all go out to Hughes, the trauma that young quick bowler Sean Abbott must be suffering cannot be overlooked. There was nothing untoward in the delivery - this was just a freak accident.

The bowler and former team-mate will need plenty of support in coming weeks.

Ironically, when as an 18 year old Abbot made his first class debut for NSW, it was Phil Hughes who was there to welcome him to the dressing room.

involved in cricket. The public does not get to see the serious bruises, bumps and lumps and breaks concealed by a set of creams and some well-placed padding. The armour of modern cricket tends to disguise the ever-present danger in the game. It is after all played with a weapon, a missile. It only ever takes a slight chink for things to go badly wrong.

Far from being a gentleman’s game, batsmen face real peril when they face seriously quick bowlers. Anyone who has ever played the game at any level knows that the little red cherry is hard, and comes at a frightful pace, and hurts when it hits.

As we saw on Tuesday the introduction of the helmet does not make batsmen immune from serious injury and over the years we have seen some pretty serious ones.

Only two weeks ago Pakistan batsman Ahmed Shehzad was hospitalised after being struck in the head in a game against NZ. Like Hughes he was well set - had been at the crease for hours and was on 176. He was luckier than Hughes and was released from hospital after a short stay.

As Phil Hughes, a renowned fighter, takes on the biggest battle of his life perhaps we should be giving more credit to those blokes in white who stride to the crease at the Gabba next week.

We have just received a stark reminder of what can happen when a shot goes wrong.

Between now and then the entire cricket community across the world are praying and hoping for Hughes’ recovery and at the same time have rallied behind a devastated Sean Abbott.

- Casey NEW TEAM TAKES THE BRL REINS AFTER last Sunday’s BRL annual general meeting, a new executive will be taking the league forward in 2015.

I have enjoyed my three years in the role of chairman. I took on the role when Steve McEvoy stepped aside and it seemed no-one was prepared to put their hand up. Things over the past three years have not always gone smoothly. Unfortunately that is the nature of country rugby league.

The challenges that face the BRL are not unique to this area - they are the same problems facing league officials in every area. Rugby league now has to fight hard for participation and support.

I am pleased to say that prior to the AGM I was able to negotiate successfully with Millmerran to join the BRL and that will only strengthen the competition.

I leave the role of chairman knowing that I have done the job to the best of my ability and always with the best interest of the league at heart.

Looking back over the past three years I can say that the highlights include the outstanding final series last year and the sensational grand final which drew an unprecedented crowd at Tenterfield to witness a great game.

The introduction of the Ladies League Tag competition last year, the first in Central Division proved a huge bonus and it would be great to see all six clubs playing in 2015.

Perhaps the biggest thrill was the success of the South West team in three consecutive Outback Carnival wins and the contribution of some extremely talented BRL players whose ability is so often overlooked.

It would have been terrific to see the BRL expand to include an under-18 competition but despite everyone’s best efforts the player numbers in each centre are just not there for a viable competition.

One of my biggest disappointments was to hear of Stanthorpe’s intention to play in the TRL next season from a third party and not from the club.

I know the league will be in good hands under the guidance of the new executive headed by chairman Dolly Bennett who brings a wealth of experience to the table. I wish the executive and the clubs every success in the future.

So much for the forecast 35 degrees - it came and went early on.

Because of the conditions, only two events rather than the planned three events were held.

The first was a wild animal hunt with bear and buffalo as the game.

Wayne Duffy proved no duffer in the conditions and proved too hot for the placegetters Iain Bowen and Tom Donald. Many a paw shot by Scott Johns relegated him to fourth place.

Following the lunch break the temperature dropped to a mere 43, when a 25-metre Mayleigh Cup shoot was held under cover.

Wayne Duffy continued his hot form again relegating Iain Bowen to the runner-up spot.

Scott Johns improved on his earlier performance to fill third placing.

This Sunday is a scheduled working bee - if nothing else members might be working on keeping cooler.

GOOD PERFORMANCES IN LOCAL CRICKET STANTHORPE cricketers had the additional problem of the heat to deal with on Saturday afternoon as they battled out their weekly fixtures.

In the searing heat, RSL and Valleys notched up wins.

On Sheahan Oval, the cricket was almost as hot as the temperature as Souths failed to spoil RSL’s unbeaten run.

Souths set the competition front-runners a serious target of 218. Souths’ openers laid the platform with a solid opening partnership of 37.

Captain and opener Ben Staley went on to score

44 before he was dismissed lbw by Ross Lupton with the score at 3/101. Adam Bonner returned to the Souths line-up and his knock of 60 not out was invaluable.

Duane Lihou caused the Souths batsmen plenty of headaches claiming five wickets in his five-over spell. Ross Lupton was again economical with the ball. His seven-over spell included a wicket and four maiden overs for the addition of only 11 runs.

RSL lost their openers cheaply but never looked in danger.

Ross Lupton notched up an unbeaten century.

In a punishing batting display, the gutsy allrounder hammered the Souths’ bowling attack to all points of Sheahan Oval on his way to 101.

He was well supported by his captain Will Dowie who finished the innings not out 52.

Souths’ cause was not helped with the addition of 35 wides in the innings.

RSL cruised past the required total in the 28th over to collect the winning points and another bonus point.

On the CF White, the action was just as hot as Valleys broke their shackles to set Wanderers a target of 203. Wanderers got off to a good start when they had both openers out cheaply. Curtis Allen’s wicket was the first to fall in just the third over with the score on only 14. In the next over the Wanderers wicket keeper had Andrew Middleton caught behind off the bowling of Brendan Drayton with the score on only 18.

Valleys captain Damian Anderson got the innings back on track with a great captain’s knock of 68 as he guided his side to 203.

Once again some sloppy bowling from the Wanderers attack gifted Valleys 50 runs.

A reminder to all golfers, the Stanthorpe Golf Club is holding a Christmas break-up next week when the Golfers of the Year will be announced.

There will be a barbecue following the Delaney Family medley 4BBB stableford (registration 11.30am, shotgun start 11.45am). The time sheet is on the noticeboard and also an RSVP for the Christmas break-up.

Valleys defended the total well throughout the second innings. The bowling attack restricted the run rate early in the innings. Curtis Allen dismissed Wanderers captain and dangerous opener Tim Harslett cheaply in only the third over and went on to take 4/43 from an eight-over spell.

The Wanderers keeper Hill top scored with 76 and provided some middle order stability as wickets tumbled.

It was a fine performance from a very young and inexperienced Valleys side who earlier in the week lost one of their club stalwarts from their playing ranks when Todd Beckett announced his retirement. Beckett said after 27 years playing for Valleys he felt the time was right to hand over to some of the young talent in the side. He was spot on - there is certainly a group of talented young players among the Valleys side and it augers well for the future of the club.

HOT CONDITIONS, HOT SCORES ON GREENS ERIC McLellan sponsored the single stableford competition at the Stanthorpe Golf Club last Saturday and the scores were almost as hot as the weather.

Tom and Trish Fittock recently donated a drinking fountain which is conveniently located in the barbecue area. It certainly got a solid workout during last Saturday’s round.

Mick O’Brien scorched around the field to record a winning score of 45 points just in advance of runner-up Matt Waterworth who finished with 44.

Astrid Turner from the Warwick Golf Club sizzled to return 41 points in the ladies’ event well in advance of runner-up Linda Kelly 39.

Santo Cavallaro and Matt Waterworth each claimed a pin at 3/12 and 17 respectively. Pro pins went the way of Bill Pyne (1/10), Stephen Kay (5/14) and Viv Thouard (9/18). The birdies nest was crowded - shared by Bill Pyne, Ian Harvey and Mark Hendry. Ladies’ pin shot went to Linda Kelly (3/12), and Hannah Reeves had the best approach at 17.

In the run down, scores of 42 points and better qualified for a ball.

STANTHORPE BID STALLED THE Stanthorpe Gremlins’ bid to play in the 2015 TRL competition has stalled after the BRL delegates voted to deny the club permission to leave the competition.

It is believed that the Gremlins will now take their argument to QRL Central Division by way of an appeal in a bid to have the decision overturned.

At the BRL delegate meeting which followed the BRL AGM, the majority of BRL clubs argued that to lose Stanthorpe would be detrimental to the ongoing well-being of the league. While Stanthorpe is adamant they have the required 60 players across three grades to enter the TRL competition other clubs were sceptical wondering if some of their key players might be in Stanthorpe’s sights.

An under-18 competition appears once again to be the sticking point. There are claims from within the Gremlins that the BRL has no interest in junior rugby league. That has never been the case, however with no direct report or link to a junior base it is understandable that some may see this as the case. The point was again made on Sunday that the player numbers produced at the recent Boundary Review Meetings did not indicate there were adequate numbers to sustain a competition. The answer may be playing a seven-a-side or nine-a-side competition in the BRL with some smaller areas combining. This was suggested at those meetings. Another solution floated was the transition of junior rugby league from under-14 and under-16 to 15s and 17s. I understand this was not meet with great approval from the junior governing body in the area, the Warwick and District Junior Rugby League.

As has always been said there are no easy answers. The decision on Stanthorpe’s future will now rest with Central Division who will make a determination based not just on the future of Stanthorpe but perhaps the future of the BRL. Interesting times ahead in rugby league circles.

BIG TURNOUT FOR TURKEY DAY SOME 30 players turned out on the bowling greens at The Summit to play in the recent turkey triples. The conditions were surprisingly good and honours went to Noel and his Southern Cross team. The runners-up were Peter Collis, Mick O’Leary and Phil Davis. It was a great day and well organised by that dedicated band of volunteers Artie, John, Quinton and Ray while the ladies looked after the afternoon team.

Social bowls last Saturday were red hot in more ways than one. Brian Brown, John Harslett and Atillio Zamprogno (19) defeated Chris Strat-

ford, Kurt Empen and Artie White (7).

The score in no way reflected the nature of the contest.

The district triples were held at Texas and The Summit. The Summit Bowls Club entered two teams. On the Saturday at Texas, The Summit teams were close but did not qualify for the post sectional play on Sunday which was held at The Summit.

Winning though to the Sunday round were teams from Tenterfield and Warwick. It was a close fought final with the Warwick team skipped

by Lee Williams taking the title.

MITCHELLS CLEAN UP JAMIE Mitchell notched up a win over Jim McPherson at Sporters last Sunday. Run downs went to Terry Byrnes and Norm Steele. Angelo Maugeri had the best gross. Pin shot on the 12th went to runner-up Paul Byrnes and Jim Mitchell grabbed the pin at 17. Brendon Barker took the pro pin. QUEENSLAND CRICKETERS OVER-40S THE Queensland Cricketers over-40s side is assembling for their final game for the year, and as is tradition - it will be played in Stanthorpe at the CF White Oval. The annual 50-over game is set down for 13 December and looking at the Cricketers Club line-up there will be a good mix of familiar faces and some new additions as they try to wrest the trophy back from Stanthorpe.

MORRIS + MORRIS TOO STRONG THE combination of D. and G. Morris proved to be too strong for the remainder of the field in the 4BBB at Wallangarra on Saturday. Runners-up in the event sponsored by B. McMillan and A. Pearce were Steve Hampstead and P. Williams.

Taking out third place was the team of Alan Lutter and Dennis McMeniman. Only two of the four pin shots were claimed. Alan Lutter had success at nine and B. McMillan snared the approach.

There are some dedicated golfers out there it would have been so much easier to stay home and find a cool spot and sip on a nice cold pina colada or ale.

TEMPERATURES SOAR - GOLFERS STILL GOLFING TEMPERATURES are soaring and we all wish the water was pouring down but it is not to be apparently. But still the golfers are playing. The heat did little to perturb John Deveitt in last Friday’s Red Rooster Rumble. He carded a healthy 26 points off his Red Rooster Rumble handicap.

Runner-up was decided on a countback and went to FIFO member Ben Pillar on 24 points just nudging out Mick Banks. Run down to Ben’s dad John Pillar on 22 points. The pins went the way of Bob Lester (5) and Al Matthews (9).

In the single stableford last Saturday in Warwick, Don Maher was the winner with a final score of 42 points. Charlie Morrison was the best of the rest finishing with a creditable 39. Run down went to 36. Pins went the way of Trevor King (5 and 11), Ron Simon (7) and Cameron Scutts (13).

RED-FACED ROAR THERE can be no harder gig in sport than being an elite coach. Winning last year’s A league title was simply not enough to save the bacon of Brisbane Roar coach Mike Mulvey after the side’s woeful start to the 2014/2015 season.

SEVENS CARNIVAL IN LONGREACH FANCY a pre-season footy trip to Longreach for a game of 7s as you prepare for the coming footy season.

The Longreach Thompsons Tigers are again hosting their annual Longreach 7s Rugby League Carnival on 14 February at the Longreach Showgrounds. While it may seem a long way to travel for a few games of footy. This is no hit and giggle stuff - there is $10,000 prize-money up for grabs.

There are Open Men’s and Open Women’s divisions with each team playing three pool games.

The pool games will be followed by semis and two finals - Plate and overall winners. Prize-money has been allocated for the winner of the final, the runner-up, Plate winner, Player of the Carnival, Dash for Cash and Women’s Finalist.

The carnival will be played under full QRL rules and all players are required to be registered.

BOWLS WARWICK EAST OUR two-day carnival is over for this year and we were disappointed with a lack of support from clubs within our district not attending. Even so, the carnival was successful and again our thanks to our sponsors and the teams that attended.

On Saturday one game of triples was played with the team of E. Diery, G. Shelley, N. Hassum defeating N. Wickham, Grumpy, B. Ellery 25-14. This game started at 3pm and was much cooler for all. We will continue with this starting time until weather cools down.

Next Thursday 27 November is our final Red Rooster day for this year and would like to see a good roll-up of players, so skips please ensure your team is available. This is an open mixed day, as all events conducted by our club are and have been for quite some time.

GOLF TENTERFIELD VETERANS THE Tenterfield Veterans Golf open day was played on Tuesday 18 November in conjunction with the Westpac Rescue Helicopter benefit day. A starting field of 114 players from 12 visiting clubs made the day a huge success.

At presentation time, president Bill Eastgate presented Peter Chittick of the Westpac Helicopter Rescue service with a cheque for $1000 raised on the day and this was added to by Parkwood and Goondiwindi veterans who raised $200 at a special function on Monday night.
