Parking pain for heart of Geelong WEEKDAY free parking in central Geelong is disappearing as City Hall clamps down on existing zones with new fees and time restrictions.

Brougham St, Western Beach, Gheringhap St and side streets throughout the university and Western Wedge precincts are being hit up with new meters and fees.

The new paid parking spaces are appearing simultaneously with new meters.

They contrast with weekend free parking introduced to lure more shoppers to the city.

Both sides of Western Beach Rd, from Gheringhap St westward, are now ticketed. Previously both sides were full with parked cars but now gaps remain as motorists avoid the cost.

City of Greater Geelong’s car park east of the waterfront’s skate park has changed from half permit parking and half two-hour parks to now be all paid permit parking Monday to Friday and two hours-only on weekends.

Workers have slammed the tighter parking, coupled with a recent increase in charges from $2 to $2.50 an hour, as a rip-off disincentive to shop in the city and an obstacle to find ten-

Myer unveiled its Geelong-first Christmas windows last Friday, while smaller retailers are also adding the spirit of the season to their shopfronts.

The decoration arrives as the Independent and Central Geelong Marketing this week kick off their Christmas windows competition.

MEANWHILE, Labor has still to show its hand on two of the region's biggest infrastructure projects: the upgrade of the Great Ocean Road and the duplication of the Princes Hwy between Colac and Winchelsea.

The Liberals challenged state Labor last week to say whether it backed the projects, worth a combined $412 million in funding commitments.

An opposition spokesperson promised a response last week but never returned the Indy's call.

A week later and still no reply.

We'll take that as a 'no', then.

CRITICS are trying hard to stick an inflated price tag on Geelong's huge floating Christmas tree.

City Hall will pay only about $320,000 for the 25-metre tourist attraction but the knotted-knickers brigade insists it actually costs $1 million.

That's the figure over five years, they argue, once storage, installation, removal and maintenance are added to the bill.

Going by that logic, a $36,000 Ford Falcon should be advertised as actually costing about $60,000 to include five years of maintenance, rego, servicing, insurance et cetera.

But that would be unfair.

SPEAKING of the big tree, it certainly extended an outbreak of untraditional public debate in Geelong.

With the usual suspects of employment, infrastructure priorities and the outlook for the Cats sidelined, the city romped through a fortnight of widespread raging argument over zombies on Malop St and oversized floating Christmas icons on Corio Bay.

Tax dodgers on notice Mr Hardy said a recent audit on a building and construction business reported income lower than expected to meet personal and business expenses.

The audit found that the owner was undercutting others in the industry and avoided almost $170,000 in taxes and was penalised more than $60,000, Mr Hardy said.

“This is just one example of the level of unfair competition that honest businesses can face.”

Mr Hardy said the ATO used a range of tools to identify businesses using the cash and hidden economy, including reviews, data matching,

comparison with small business benchmarks and community reports of businesses evading tax.

Geelong Chamber of Commerce executive officer Bernadette Uzelac believed the actual percentage of local businesses failing their obligations would be lower than 18 per cent.

“Most businesses are doing the right thing, although there might be a few culprits out there,” Ms Uzelac said.

“It’s important that everyone gets a fair chance and it keeps business on a level playing field, especially under the economic conditions in Geelong at the moment.”

Mitch makes mark as Menzel makes way back to side

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN GEELONG Cats unveiled their four newest recruits this week but encouraging news about injury-plagued forward Daniel Menzel news almost upstaged the event.

Menzel put in a strong showing in the Cats’ two-kilometre time trial, finishing fourth behind Mark Blicavs, Josh Caddy and Josh Walker.

An outpouring of support on social media engulfed Menzel, coming back from his fourth knee reconstruction, after the Cats twitter feed proclaimed the result.

But the main interest centred on former Lion and Demon Mitch Clark who felt strong enough to declare he would be ready for round one next year.

Given number 19, the 200-centimetre ruck and key forward said he wanted to “hopefully cause a few headaches” teaming with Tom Hawkins.

Clark admitted he was “a fair way off where I want to be” but felt the break from football to recover from depression had done him well.

UP to 2500 Geelong enterprises could be dabbling in the risky business of the hidden cash economy, according to the Australian Tax Office (ATO).

The ATO said its latest statistics revealed the local businesses might be deliberately hiding income to gain an “unfair advantage” over honest competitors.

Senior assistant commissioner Michael Hardy said the ATO had identified the businesses as “potentially” involved in the cash and hidden economy.

“We know the majority of businesses meet their obligations and pay

their fair share of tax. Unfortunately, there are still businesses that deliberately pay cash-in-hand wages, fail to pay their employees’ super and do not report all their income,” Mr Hardy said.

“We have recently identified 18.2 per cent of businesses in the Geelong region which may be deliberately hiding income to avoid paying tax and superannuation.

“What we’re seeing from the information we’ve collected is that certain businesses in the building and construction industry, restaurant and cafes, hairdressers and beauticians are more likely to be involved in these activities.”

THIEVES stole 11 vehicles including a $150,000 Mercedes in Geelong over the past week, according to police statistics.

The statistics also revealed Newtown had the most residential burglaries in Geelong, with four reported compared to three at Norlane.

New ‘eco-park’ faces rejection DRAMATICALLY revised plans for a caravan park near Torquay are set to be rejected ahead a tribunal hearing next month.

Surf Coast council has previously rejected the $105 million "eco park" for a site off Coombes and Ghazeepore Rds and officers are recommending that councillors knock it back again when a reduced proposal goes before their meeting next week.

BCR Asset Management has reduced the plan's cabins from 500 to 250 and caravan sites from 200 to 160 while increasing landscaping around the project in a bid to clear an anticipated appeal to Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT).

The revision also removes a skate and BMX park, a tennis court and a lawn bowling green, while curbing a basketball court to a half-court.

A report to next Tuesday’s meeting argues against the park on multiple grounds.

“While the reduced size of the proposed development is welcomed, it is still considered that the scale within the non-urban landscape break of the Thompson Valley is inappropriate,” the report states.

“Even at the reduced scale the development will still exceed the projected accommodation requirements identified in the Great Ocean Road Destination Management Plan and will concentrate the impacts of tourism growth into one area rather than spreading them across the wider region.”

The officer-suggested recommendation cites: the scale and intensity of the proposal as contrary to the rural setting of the Thompson Valley and the transition environment of the Low Density Residential-

zoned land to the south-east;

scale and intensity of the · the proposal as incompatible with role of the Thompson Valley as a buffer on urban development; the proposed land use substantially exceeding projected accommodation requirements identified in a Great Ocean Road Destination Management Plan, concentrating the impacts of tourism growth into one area rather than spreading them across the wider region; insufficient information about the operational structure, accommodation standard, nature of community facilities, permanency of residents, and potential lease arrangements.

BCR Asset Management has booked a VCAT hearing for 8 to 16 December.

The Independent was unable to contact BCR Asset Management for comment.

Memorial sets a Christmas target

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN THE FIRST stage of a $130,000 Vietnam Veterans memorial in North Geelong should be finalised by Christmas.

Geelong Vietnam Veterans Association President Reiny Nieuwenhof said the three-stage project envisaged a "legacy memorial of national significance”.

Mr Nieuwenhof said the association planned to have the project completed by 2016 in time for the 50th anniversary of one of the crucial engagements of the conflict, the Battle of Long Tan. The first stage would replace

dead and missing trees to restore the avenue of honour to its former glory, he said.

Mr Nieuwenhof said new signage would be in place by Christmas to replace existing signs obscured by vegetation.

The project included the restoration of former Osborne Park gates, re-attaching their Osborne Park nameplate and creating a path through to a small memorial park on the corner of Swinburne St, he said.

The project proposes installation of a series of interpretive panels, including one with the

names of all 521 diggers who lost their lives in Vietnam.

The association also wants to erect a Long Tan cross in the grounds of Osborne Park near its Lone Pine.

Mr Nieuwenhof said the association's fundraising activities for the project included a buy-apaver appeal and sponsorships for the panels.

The association was still negotiating with council over moving a community billboard in the avenue of honour because it disrespected the memory of fallen diggers, he said.

She said the work was saved for Geelong after Mr Courtney met her husband, Paul, and engineer son, Tom. Hanlon Industries is one of Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest builders of billboards.

A City Hall spokesman said the central Geelong PAY: A new city precinct was growing and parking meter. experiencing considerable change, with new developments and changing user demands.

He said the needs of the general public coming into central Geelong were paramount in adjusting some existing parking arrangements to cater for changes in demand.

The changes being implemented were removing some anomalies and making the parking arrangements consistent across the Central Geelong precinct, the spokesman said.

It was unfortunate some employees working in central Geelong businesses and medical centres might no longer have access to free daytime parking Monday to Friday but the needs of the general public had to be catered for in the first instance, he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Reaction to the changes from the general public - including people needing to make short-term visits to the hospitals and medical clinics - has been very positive.â&#x20AC;?

GEELONG will have to wait to see the full range of features in its new floating Christmas tree, the man behind the concept has revealed.

Keith Courtney of Creative Production Services said this was only â&#x20AC;&#x153;year one of a five-year planâ&#x20AC;?. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have lots of tricks up our sleeves for the years to come,â&#x20AC;? Mr Courtney said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve kept plenty of our powder dry for the future.â&#x20AC;?

Mr Courtney said the project had â&#x20AC;&#x153;genuinely captured an Australian Christmasâ&#x20AC;?.

Geelongâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s council should be congratulated because it had done something no other council had achieved, he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a real successful story and a credit to Geelong. Despite the tight timelines, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been fantastic dealing with the Geelong businesses involved.â&#x20AC;?

With the lighting, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a bit like dancing because we have music to change the images to, so weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve done a lot of programming of the lights to three specially chosen Christmas carols.â&#x20AC;?

A DERELICT power station at North Geelong could become a community precinct for graffiti and street artists under the plans of Vintage Warehouse boss Barry Ballis.

The abandoned site is being cleaned up and fenced off, with artists sought for the Powerhouse project.

The project could include activities such as art spaces, subculture displays, spray-off art and a film shoot-out competition.

Vividly-coloured photos and drone videos of the former State Electricity Commission’s Geelong B power station emerged on social media over the weekend.

They were immediately greeted

with enthusiasm.

“This is seven stories high. It needs a bit of painting and decorating but it’ll come up a treat with some creativity,” said one post.

“It’s going to be industrial meets street art...a match made in heaven.”

The Ballis camp was reluctant to detail its plans, saying it was early days but that the activity fell well within the site’s existing planning zoning.

“It’s in an Industrial 1 zone where warehousing, industry and container storage are all permitted,” a spokesman told the Independent.

“It’s private land and, yes, these are definitely commercial arrangements.”

The Independent last year revealed the old powerhouse as riddled inside and out with broken glass and concrete, sharp twisted metal, needles and pornographic artwork - a public danger ignored by owner and authorities alike.

A kaleidoscope of spray can art, pornography and vandalism made for a bizarre coloured exhibition and intruders faced the danger of falling two metres through unsecured holes.

Talks emerged last year of a possible boat storage facility at the power station, which the Ballis spokesperson said was “still in the mix”.

“But we feel art is a much better use for the site and keeps it within the industrial Toorak end of the bike track,” he said.

AUSTRALIAN Bureau of Statistics staff in Canberra are worried about job losses when a new ABS centre opens in Geelong.

Premier Denis Napthine recently announced the ABS would establish a Centre of Excellence in Geelong in partnership with Deakin University, creating up to 250 jobs.

Community and Public Sector Union deputy president Alistair Waters said the ABS had already suffered cuts of $80 million and 350 staff. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Staff are clearly wondering how this is going to work because it just doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t add up and the lack

of information is making them anxious,â&#x20AC;? Mr Waters said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Their budgets have been cut and 350 of their colleagues have departed as a result, so to a lot of staff this looks like nothing more than robbing Peter to pay Paul. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They know that the ABS needs to be properly funded to do its job, regardless of where staff are located.â&#x20AC;?

Mayor Darryn Lyons and Deakin vice-chancellor Jane den Hollander have encouraged ABS staff to move to Geelong.

Ms den Hollander said some would stay in Canberra because of family ties but others should consider moving.

She anticipated the ABS would be able to find suitably qualified staff for the centre.

The ABS will lease a former Ford Discovery Centre on Brougham St for at least 10 years.

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN INVESTORS have lost tens of thousands of dollars after dealing with a Torquay financial services trader now banned for seven years.

Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ACIC) deputy chairman Peter Kell said Scott Logan breached numerous financial services laws as a director and sole employee of Shore Capital Pty Ltd, trading as Coast Capital.

“At least three clients lost a combined total of over $38,000 through the unauthorised trading,” Mr Kell said.

“The investing public needs to be able to trust those who provide financial services. ASIC will act to ensure those who behave without regard to their obligations to their clients will be removed from

financial services.

Mr Kell said Mr Logan and Shore Capital could appeal to an Administrative Appeals Tribunal.

Mr Logan was formerly an authorised representative of Romad Financial Services Pty Ltd from 25 June 2011 to 21 October 2011.

Mr Kell said ASIC cancelled Romad’s AFS licence on 21 October 2011.

Mr Kell said Mr Logan made numerous false or misleading representations to clients about Shore Capital’s authorisation to provide financial services and its fees.

VIVA Energy Australia is embroiled in an industrial dispute three months after taking over Corioâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s former Shell refinery.

Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) has alleged the company was party to a secret plan to sack and abandon 36 crew members of one of Vivaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s chartered fuel tankers.

The matter was heard in the Fair Work Commission with all parties, including the tankerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Canadian-based owner, Teekay Corporation, ordered to negotiate a settlement.

Trades Hall, MP Buckets&Bouquets clash over fund A MULTI-MILLION-DOLLAR fund to help redundant manufacturing workers in Geelong is missing its target, according to a union leader.

Geelong and Region Trades and Labour Council boss Tim Gooden said the fund had “supposedly” created 737 jobs but “only 183” were in advanced manufacturing.

“The remaining jobs are mostly in agriculture production and warehousing, and a large proportion will be casual and part-time,” he said.

Mr Gooden wanted the remaining $10 million in the Geelong Innovation and Investment Fund redirected to “advanced manufacturing”.

Liberal MP for Corangamite Sarah Henderson defended the fund as “delivering in spades”.

She accused Trades Hall of “playing partisan politics” after failing to support State Government’s East West Link project, which promised 6700 jobs.

Trades Hall had also failed to speak out against state Labor’s failing to back upgrades to the Great Ocean Road and the Princes Highway between Colac and Winchelsea.

“Trades Hall has failed Geelong workers,” she said.

Jobs ‘falling as flights reduce’

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN JETSTAR sometimes reduced its flights from Avalon to three a day during last winter, an election forum has heard in Geelong.

Avalon Airport workers told the forum the number of ground staff was now down to 10 or 11 from a high of 30.

The airport was going through a “slow demise” with a lack of government investment, staff said.

“Avalon Jetstar is competing against Tullamarine Jetstar,” one staff member, who asked not to be identified, said.

“We're hoping things pick up during the summer season because if Jetstar pull out Avalon will be left with nothing but a car park.”

The Independent has reported calls in recent months by Mayor Darryn Lyons and Geelong business leaders to “use it or lose it”.

Australian Services Union (ASU) organised the forum last week, inviting candidates from all parties to address the future of the beleaguered facility.

ASU Victorian secretary Ingrid Stitt raised fears over the future of the Jetstar flights after an $11 million grant from State

Government and Avalon to keep the airline at Avalon ran out in April.

“That poses questions about the job security of our members working at Avalon and about the future of Avalon as a credible second airport for Victoria,” Ms Stitt said.

Jetstar has steadily wound back flights at Avalon in recent years, cutting services between the airport and centres including Adelaide, the Gold Coast and Brisbane.

Sydney is the only Jetstar destination now available from Avalon.

Letters Light on for transport

PERHAPS Mayor Darryn Lyons can give us a lift home tonight, along with the thousands of other families in Geelong that rely on public transport.

My children can’t wait to see the spectacular light show but at this time of year I just can't justify the $18 to $22 taxi fare home.

It’s all very well saying “Christmas is all about the kids” and “if you're not there you will miss history” (Independent, 14 November) but, with just 33 minutes to watch the show and then get to the bus interchange on Moorabool St to catch the last bus home, it just isn't going to happen. On Friday nights our last bus home, the number 50 Hamlyn Heights service, departs at 9.03pm.

Although I find Cr Lyons’ many efforts to revitalise our small city and re-enthuse its citizens commendable, how can it work if the bus services grind to a halt so early in the evening?

Saturday and Sunday evenings are even more embarrassing, with the last buses leaving at 7.04pm and 6.04pm respectively – just the time when people want to come into town to eat out or take a stroll along the waterfront, not rush home.

I wonder how I will explain this to our visitors from overseas next month.

Weak support for take-off GIVEN that Avalon Airport remains one of Geelong’s heavy-lifters, why hasn’t it been given fair dinkum support from the three tiers of governance, particularly at a state level given the 29 November poll?

Given their ineptitude, G21, Committee for Geelong and Geelong Chamber of Commerce also need to be held to account by their members and subscribers.

While Committee for Geelong chairman Dan Simmonds has said Avalon is critical for Geelong (Independent, 23 May), committee chief Rebecca Casson has praised Avalon management for signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the owner of China's fourth largest airline (Independent, 11 April) and G21 has been supportive of the on again/off again/on again rail spur proposal, the support from advocacy groups, given the airport’s potential, has been underwhelming.

The fact is that Avalon Airport is perched on the cusp of at best going nowhere or, more to the point, going out backward at a great rate of knots.

Lamentably, we have heard less than a whimper from Lara election aspirants John Eren and Tony McManus. Ditto Corio federal MP Richard Marles.

The prospect of Asian carriers ferrying in tourists and back-loading fresh food and other produce to burgeoning Asian markets offers a bonanza for Chinese investors and locals with smarts that would invert concerned investor confidence and stand regional unemployment gloom on its head.

It all begs the question: why isn’t it happening?

Away with the ferries AGAIN we are deluged with hype regarding the proposed Portarlington ferry service to Melbourne, with the ferry group even publicly talking up the prospect that this service could be up and running by mid2015 (Independent, 7 November).

The Labor party is said to support this proposal but its most recent election propaganda states that, if elected, it will “take the lead on a ferry service to Melbourne”. Hardly a firm commitment to spend millions of dollars on a dubious ferry service!

In September 2010 state Labor’s then-transport minister, Martin Pakula wrote: “The Department of Transport (DOT) has investigated options for a ferry service on Port Phillip Bay. The DOT has concluded that a service between Portarlington and Melbourne is unlikely to be viable, due to a lack of patronage demand, poor service frequency and issues with service unreliability.

“DOT believes that the transport needs of the Bellarine Peninsula can be more effectively met through the enhancement of existing land-based transport routes”.

Perhaps it’s time to be reminded that on 16 July 2010 the Independent reported: “A relatively low number of commuters have expressed interest in using a proposed ferry service between Portarlington and Melbourne, according to State Government Environment and Climate Change Minister Gavin Jennings”.

There has been no indication the Transport Department has changed its mind or that Labor has had a change of heart in the four years since 2010 regarding the viability of the ferry.

Ooh la la, Normie’s returning

By NOEL MURPHY AT HIS peak, Normie Rowe was a national phenomenon, drawing crowds of young screaming female fans in Beatlemania fashion.

His lyrics questioned the Bible and his long hair, in 1965, scared the establishment.

When he was suddenly conscripted and sent to Vietnam, right at the height of his fame – and just as he was shaping up as a possible international star – questions were asked about whether it was deliberate.

Elvis had been taken off the grid and sent to Germany with the US Army only a few years before.

Rowe hits such as It Ain’t Necessarily So, Ooh La La, It’s Not Easy and Shakin’ All Over remain rock-pop fixtures of the Australian music landscape – and he couldn’t be prouder.

Rowe still plays with mates from back in the day and he’s still suspicious, too, about his army role.

But at 67, he’s mellowed. Besides, as he says, it’s not good trying to sue now.

“My feeling is there’s nothing I can do about it now,” he told the Independent.

“If I could sue the people who perpetrated it, like Harold Holt,

But he still belts out the hits, and enjoys it wholeheartedly.

“I love it,” he said.

“I don’t know why but I seem to enjoy it even more these days.

Maybe it’s because I know what I’m doing. I’m controlling it.

“I don’t think anyone was really controlling things back in the early days.”

Between Rowe and Hewett, the Gateway show will feature enough hits to keep going all night.

And, as Rowe said, he hasn’t played a gig in years with the crowd “chockers”.

Dockers and more for festival LARRIKIN rock band Painters and Dockers is among the final names released to fill the bill at Geelong’s Motor City Music Festival in March.

Message from Premier THIS week is Fire Action Week, Victoria’s annual fire planning and preparation week.

Now is the time to increase your understanding of the fire risk where you live, prepare your property, and decide what you’ll do if a fire starts.

Last summer, fire fighters responded to more than 40,000 incidents, and 4600 bushfires and grassfires burned across the state. This year, the season forecast tells us that we’re facing an above average risk of bushfire and grassfire.

Right now is the best time to understand your fire risk and get prepared, not when a fire starts.

What can you do to prepare? Talk to your family about the fire risk where you live and make plans for what you’ll do on hot, dry, windy days. Check the Fire Danger Rating for your area every day and know which Fire Danger Rating is your trigger to act. Understand how to stay informed by accessing warnings and updates, and know how to use them.

On hot, dry, windy days, fires can start and spread quickly. If the Fire Danger Rating is Code Red, Extreme or Severe, you’re risking your life if you wait and

see. Leaving late means driving your family through smoke, fallen trees and power lines, and facing the risk of being trapped or worse. Leaving early is the safest option to protect yourself and your family.

This week, CFA brigades around the state are opening their doors and getting out and about in their community to talk about getting ready for summer.

You can check cfa.vig.gov.au/ events for information on what’s happening in your local area.

AS DAWN breaks over the greens at 13th Beach Golf Links on 23 January, golf enthusiasts from around the region will be teeing off on a mammoth challenge: walking 100 holes of golf in one day for the Karingal Hundred Hole Hike (HHH).

Apart from a love of golf and an appetite for a challenge, the players undertake the incredible feat to help Karingal raise funds to build a fully inclusive Eastern Geelong Community Centre, which will be home to Karingal’s acquired brain injury (ABI) clubhouse programs.

The community has many ways to support the event.

First, golfers can register to play. Individual and team registrations are open for participants fit and experienced enough for the huge physical and mental

During 2013 contractors carried out more than 160,000 patient transports in Victoria alone.

Ambulance officers, who work alongside paramedics, and pathology collectors are also in short supply.

Geelong residents can now get a kick-start in any of these careers by completing a part-time course in bayside Melbourne.

The last in a series of information sessions runs Thursday night, 4 December, at Altona North, around 60km from Geelong.

Two qualifications are available: Certificate III in NonEmergency Client Transport and Diploma of Paramedical Science (Ambulance).

Coordinator Jennifer Smith says both courses present widereaching benefits.

Battler Cats in season D-day AFTER last round’s stirring victory over St Kilda, Geelong Cricket Club travelled to Footscray Edgewater on the weekend with renewed hope of salvaging its season and getting back into the finals mix.

However, batting first after winning the toss, the Cats struggled, falling for a disappointing 165 from just 53 overs.

Josh McDonald (41) tried hard at the top of the order, while Mitch Reid (41) offered support but it was too little from too few.

With 34 overs to bowl to try getting back into it, Jeremy Hart showed his leg-spinning class, taking 2/34, but at the end of the day the hosts were 3/89.

Tomorrow will be D day for the Cats. If they can fire up and grab some early wickets they’ll be in the hunt but if they can’t pull off a win their finals hopes look like being dashed before Christmas.

In Geelong Cricket Association, two of the season’s surprise packets - Bell Post Hill and Geelong City - will go head to head at Myers Reserve in the match of the round.

The Panthers have been very competitive so far, knocking off South Barwon last round to consolidate their spot in the top six.

Springs turns on snapper action CLIFTON Springs continued its consistency for local anglers over the past week.

Ben McLean returned to the Turn after his recent successes, this time trolling lures down deep with the aid of downriggers. Five minutes after starting he caught his first snapper, a fish of 5kg, before boating another of the same size soon after getting the lures back in the water.

Fishing World’s Kevin Hunter fished a similar location Saturday night, catching snapper around 1kg on pilchards. Kevin also took good numbers of silver whiting, which make fantastic snapper bait.

Last Thursday night I took advantage of the calm weather to find great numbers of Australian salmon at Alcoa Pier. Casting Fish Arrow soft plastics, I boated salmon to 1.5kg.

Nearby, anglers fishing the channel edges caught snapper to 4kg on sunset.

Clifton Springs was also productive for squid of respectable size. Jigs in size 2.5 accounted for most catches, with the White Shimano the most popular jig.

Pinkies responded well to soft plastics fished around Geelong’s waterfront.

Anglers fishing further around to North Shore rocks caught larger pinkies, some nudging 50cm.

bers on soft plastics such as Gulp Turtleback worms in Pumpkin Green. Bream were also caught on lures.

St Leonards Pier remained popular for land-based anglers seeking snapper. Sunrise and sunset were best, with fresh squid and pilchards the best baits.

The pier also hosted a good population of squid, making fresh bait easy to gather.

Swan Bay produced squid and salmon for anglers drifting out the front. Lures such as Daiwa Double Clutches or Yamashita occy skirts caught the salmon.

Anglers fishing though the night bagged snapper to 3kg on baits such as pilchard and squid.

Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale were productive for big squid. Larger jigs got the job done on the biggest squid.

Fishing World’s Michael Moore caught his bag of squid in the Lonsdale Bight with Gan Craft jigs.

Whiting remained patchy, although anglers who found them caught fish averaging almost 40cm.

Snapper of 3kg to 4kg were

caught in 40m off Barwon Heads, with pilchard and silver whiting baits working well.

Anglers also found salmon busting up in large schools at the 40m mark, taking fish to 2.kg on lures.

Freshwater fishing improved for trout, redfin, carp and yellowbelly.

Wurdee Boluc Reservoir produced outstanding brown trout, with Tim Beusmans drifting mudeye under a float to bank a fish over 2kg.

The Barwon River fished well for redfin to 800g on hard-body lures. Queen’s Park remained the standout location.

Anglers fishing super sweet corn kernels as bait grassed carp from 1kg to 4 kg.

Out of town, Lake Eildon fished very well for yellowbelly.

Trolling or casting lures was the preferred method, with catches of fish to 3kg reported.

Next week’s options include St Leonards Pier for squid on size 3 jigs in the evenings. Otherwise, Queenscliff Harbour should be worthwhile for silver trevally on soft plastics.

Snapper enthusiasts should head to the Turn at Clifton Springs.

Grovey lights up with sport funds GROVEDALE’S sports precinct will light up after receiving $176,000 for an upgrade from the Australian Government’s Community Development Grants Program.

“The installation of new lights at Burdoo Reserve will allow the facility to be used in the evenings for players to train
