Mates remember the fallen

NOOSA residents gathered at the Tewantin cenotaph on Tuesday to commemorate the 96th year of Remembrance Day. Residents were asked to bow their heads in united silence and consider the brutal realities of all wars and the need to honour and remember those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. Time for justice IT WAS a murder that shocked the small Noosa community, and now, 30 years after her death, Lesley Patricia Larkin’s family is asking for answers.

Police are hoping an appeal from Lesley’s family on the anniversary of her death will help them bring the cold case homicide to a close.

A neighbour found Lesley, 31, naked and brutally beaten in the bedroom of a Kareela Avenue, Noosa Heads, unit at 12.30am on 9 November 1984.

Lesley was taken to hospital but died a day later from her injuries.

Detective Acting Superintendent Mick Dowie said Lesley was last seen by a friend about 10pm on 3 November.

“The investigation is a current cold case being investigated by members of the Homicide Group and Central Region,” he said.

On Tuesday, Lesley’s mother Patti Lleiss and her daughter Juanita Wotherspoon joined police to make an appeal for anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers.

“It’s been a long time for us, her

family, to wait for a resolution and to await some kind of closure to what happened to her and why it happened,” Ms Lleiss said.

“This year, for some reason, has been a very difficult anniversary, for us and me personally.

“I find that I can’t speak for very long about it this year… I find that I become upset very quickly.”

Lesley’s sister said her sister was “full of life”.

“Lesley was a beautiful young woman, vivacious, happy, friendly, with a great wide smile and gentle brown eyes,” she said.

“She was so full of life.

“She did not deserve this.

“We still wait hoping that one day we will know who and why.”

A $250,000 reward is being offered for anyone with information which leads to the apprehension and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the murder of Lesley Patricia Larkin. In addition, an appropriate indemnity from prosecution will be recommended.

DOMESTIC violence has again made national headlines after a Noosa man was charged with attempted murder following an assault last week.

Police will allege the 45-year-old Noosa man assaulted his partner last Thursday, before fleeing on a motorbike, and then hijacking a Channel 7 vehicle and crashing it into an LPG tank at a Doonan service station.

The woman, in her 40s, was taken to hospital with head and neck injuries, after what police described as a “serious assault”.

The incident made national headlines and comes amid reports local refuges are bursting at the seams with hundreds of women and children seeking safety after experi-

encing violent relationships.

The annual White Ribbon Day, which falls on 25 November, is a timely reminder to the local community to not tolerate violence against women.

The 2014 White Ribbon campaign asks Australians to take a pledge to not ignore or tolerate violence against women and sexual harassment, either in the home, at work or in public.

According to the White Ribbon organisation, at least one woman dies from domestic violence every week, one in five women have experienced sexual harassment in the workplace and almost one in five women has experienced sexual assault since the age of 15.

Onstage with the Crew

By JOLENE OGLE ANYTHING you can do, we can do too - that’s the message from the Creating Unity Crew who are busy rehearsing for their second annual theatre performance.

Founded by husband and wife team, Paul and Karen Hinton, the Creating Unity Crew is made up of members of the community who share a passion for performing.

Paul and Karen founded the group at the beginning of last year and together the crew put on a successful performance of a locally written play called ‘Hill Spirits’.

This year, the crew is back and already rehearsing for their new play, ‘We, Too, Can Be In Love’.

Paul said the play was chosen to

highlight that people with a disability are capable of love, just like everyone else.

Every member of the Creating Unity Crew are taking part in the play, bringing their own special skills and talents to the performance.

Adrian Kooistra, who has cerebral palsy and is non-verbal, has written a song for the play with the help of a facilitated communicator.

Adrian said it was important to tell the community that people with disabilities can do whatever anyone else can.

Other performers include Oliver Guthrie, who is set to tear up the dance floor with his signature moves when he plays a rock star.

Oliver said he has always wanted to perform, whether it be in movies or on

the stage, and loves to take part in the Creating Unity plays.

Suzie Holden is making one of the major costumes for the play, which is the first garment she’s sewn since being in a wheelchair, and Krystal Covill, who said she has always wanted to perform, will play the fairy godmother despite sometimes feeling nervous before going on stage.

The Creating Unity Crew will perform We, Too, Can Be In Love at the Christian Outreach Church, 200 Eumundi-Noosa Rd, Noosaville, on Wednesday 26 November at 11.15am and then again on Friday 5 December at 6pm.

Pole revolt

By JONATHON HOWARD AVALON Farm Cottages owner Linda McHenry is facing an up-hill battle in the Planning and Environment Court to prevent the construction of a 31-metre monopole at Grahams Road, Pinbarren.

The monopole site, which is near Ms McHenry’s retreat, was approved by Noosa Council in August and the council will this week consider whether to defend its decision during the court proceedings.

The monopole is designed to connect and enhance the National Broadband Network’s wireless capabilities in the area and provide increased internet speeds to users.

Councillors are being asked to consider an agenda piece in the Planning and Organisation Committee Meeting to defend its decision and go against Ms McHenry’s appeal.

“While this appeal has been lodged by a submitter (Ms McHenry) and it is largely for the applicant to defend the appeal where they wish to proceed with the development, the council has a role in the appeal to defend council’s decision, provide information to the court and be a party to any proceedings should the applicant present amendments to the development plans,” the report before councillors reads.

Ms McHenry said she lodged the court appeal after she felt the monopole would “severely impact” the natural amenity of her eco retreats.

She has also expressed her dissatisfaction with the Noosa Council resolution to approve the monopole in August, despite conflicts with the Noosa planning scheme.

During council’s 28 August meeting, the council resolved to approve the application finding the following grounds were sufficient to justify the decision despite the conflict with

the planning scheme: 1. The telecommunications facility will provide coverage for the NBN fixed wireless network, allowing for the delivery of higher speed data to households in the area; and 2. The proposal is screened by substantial vegetation buffers and does not adversely impact the existing visual qualities of the area.

Ms McHenry said she was “deeply saddened” by the council’s decision and current consideration.

“Where is the council we voted in to protect the Noosa planning scheme, the environment and the eco-friendly resorts,” she said.

Ms McHenry believes the monopole should not exceed 25 metres and was also inconsistent with the Mary River locality code.

She also feels the recommended location would “severely impact” the landscape and public views of Mt Pinbarren and Mt Cooroora - which contridicts the council’s ruling.

“Alternative sites have not been properly assessed by the planning staff at Noosa Council and limited information has been provided about real alternatives to both the council and community,” the council’s document read.

Ms McHenry had previously told Noosa Today that people who visited her retreat were attempting to escape the likes of monopoles and fast internet.

She now fears for her family business and worries about the future of her nine-mountain view retreat.

While Ms McHenry’s case is unique and each case is considered by the Planning and Environment Court, several attempts to have monopole constructions halted in towns outside Noosa have been overruled both with and without a council’s support.

Noosa Council will make a final vote on the agenda piece during the council’s ordinary meeting on Thursday, 20 November.

Open space is signed and sealed NOOSA Council has made a successful bid to buy the Peregian Beach Bowls Club following 12 months of fears the site could have become a shopping precinct.

This month marks a year since Multi Span Australia unsuccessfully applied to Noosa Council to develop the former Peregian Beach Bowls Club land.

Noosa Council denied the application on the grounds that the property was zoned for “open space recreational use”, although the applicant subsequently appealed the council’s ruling in the Planning and Environment Court. The court upheld the council’s refusal of the application.

Noosa Council has now signed a historic contract to buy the former Peregian Beach Bowls Club site for $750,000.

Mayor Noel Playford said the acquisition was a win for the local community.

Current owner, Pine Rivers Memorial Bowls Club, has accepted the council’s offer to buy the vacant 6500 square metre Rufous Street property.

“The council’s investment in this land represents a great outcome for the Peregian com-

munity, which has voiced concerns about the types of development previously proposed for the site,” Cr Playford said.

“Once the site transfers to the council we will work with the Peregian community to determine a use for the site that will provide the greatest benefit to the local area.”

Members of the Peregian Beach Community Association, who played an integral part in the court case, are celebrating what they see as a win for the local community.

Association vice-president Barry Cotterell said the community was delighted with the council’s purchase of the bowls club and he said it was important to keep as much recreational space in Peregian as possible.

“It was important that the council own this land, rather than a private investor who may have looked at developing the site in the future,” he said.

“It is important that it continue to be used as recreational space, a commodity which is in short supply in Peregian Beach.”

Mr Cotterell said the win was the result of council and community working together.

Theft on the rise

By JONATHON HOWARD AN INCREASE in vehicle and property theft across the Sunshine Coast and Noosa has prompted Noosa police to urge all motorists to “lock it or lose it” - as the battle to reduce theft starts with prevention.

Queensland Police statistics revealed that September saw the highest number of recorded thefts of any month this year.

There were about 500 reported thefts during September including cases of vehicle and property theft in Noosa.

Noosa police will soon be carrying out random car checks in parking lots in known theft hotspots, to see whether vehicles are locked and secured.

A failure to lock up could land the vehicle owner with a warning or a $45 fine, for failing to lock up.

Noosa police crime reduction officer Constable Tara Nolan said vehicle owners were obligated to ensure they were locking their vehicles and were not leaving valuables in their cars, especially in plain sight.

“Thieves are looking for items such as mobile phones, laptops, tablets and other electronic devices left in clear view,” she said.

“The best way to discourage this behaviour is to ensure your personal items are not in plain sight and you are taking all the precautions.”

She said some motorists were even leaving a spare set of keys in the glove box of their vehicle, and they were shocked when their car was stolen.

“We’re also reminding people to secure items such as surfboards which can be left on roof racks and which

AVOID becoming a target of theft this summer season by following some timely advice from Noosa police.

- Remove all valuables from the vehicle. If you must leave valuables in your vehicle, keep them out of sight.

- Do not leave personal documents in your vehicle as you risk your identity being stolen.

- After removing a GPS unit, use a cloth to remove suction marks on the windscreen.

- Make sure you lock your vehicle at all times, even when the vehicle is parked in your driveway or on your property. If you own a van, ensure any sliding doors are locked.

- Consider fitting a car alarm, immobiliser, ignition shield or other available security devices.

- Do not leave spare keys anywhere in the vehicle and ensure garage door openers are out of sight.

- Mark your property with a personal code or microdot.

- Etch the vehicle identification number onto the windows of your vehicle.

- Think smart and prepare to avoid becoming a victim of crime.

THE security officer who was coward punched while on duty at the Noosa Heads taxi rank, has denied he grabbed his attacker by the throat.

As reported in Noosa Today last week (6 November, pg 10), Jarrad Twaites, 28, pleaded guilty in Noosa Magistrates’ Court to assaulting the security officer earlier this year, but the victim said he never grabbed Twaites by the throat.

It was reported Twaites hit the security officer in the back of the head in what his defence lawyer called a “spontaneous” and “reactionary” attack, before being held against a fence by the throat.

The security officer said he did not grab Twaites, instead he restrained Twaites using his forearm.

Drug raids SIX people will face drug charges in Noosa Magistrates’ Court following drug raids last Friday.

Police raided two homes, one in Noosaville and one in Tewantin, and have charged six people with 11 offences including possession of dangerous drugs, failing to dispose of needles, and weapons charges.

Police said the raids happened after they received information from the public.

Lest we forget

By JONATHON HOWARD A TRIBUTE to the servicemen and women who lost their lives during World War I and all conflicts since, took place at the Tewantin cenotaph for Remembrance Day on Tuesday 11 November.

More than 100 residents, students, dignitaries, ex-servicemen and women gathered around the cenotaph, as the Australian flag flew at half mast.

It was at 11am on 11 November 1918, when the guns of the Western Front fell silent after more than four years of brutal and unrelenting warfare.

The allied armies had driven the German invaders back, having inflicted heavy defeats upon them over the preceding four months.

By November, the Germans called for an armistice (suspension of fighting) in order to secure a peace settlement and they accepted the Allied terms of unconditional surrender.

The moment when hostilities ceased, the Western Front became universally associated with the remembrance of those who had died during the war.

From that day the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month attained a special significance in the post-war years and that significance remains today.

The remembrance ceremony started with a march from the members of the Returned and Services League of Australia (QLD Branch) and members of the Tewantin Noosa RSL Subbranch.

Sub-branch secretary Brett McDonald was the master of ceremonies and invited president Steve Drake to welcome those paying tribute.

A prayer and reading was delivered

by Reverend Leonie Gaffel and this year’s guest speaker was Lynne McClelland, who recently completed the Kokoda Track through the Owen Stanley Range in Papua New Guinea. Rob Wareing delivered the Ode before student Kyle Jefferey performed The Last Post on trumpet, as residents bowed their heads for a minute’s silence.

Brighten someone’s Christmas

Frangipani Dream on move THE mission to help Petra and her son Jack Geitl to purchase a mobility access vehicle continues to gain momentum, with more local businesses signing up to help out.

Noosa River and Canal Cruises will host a special sunset cruise on Thursday, 20 November, and they need residents to purchase tickets.

The event has so far sold only 12 tickets but has an intended goal of 40 - so more help is needed.

The event will feature rising star and X Factor 2010 finalist Andrew Lawson, who will perform while onboard the cruise.

Noosa River and Canal Cruises owners Kym and Gary Logan said they had seen the appeal to help

Petra and Jack in Noosa Today and wanted to come up with an innovative fund-raising idea.

Elegant Eggplant owners James and Mimi Zaraza on Gympie Terrace have thrown their support behind the cruise by providing a range of delicious canapés.

Andrew Grennan and John Whimpress, owners of Jack Cellars, have kindly contributed wine and sparkling beverages.

Two new sponsors have also signed up including the Sheraton Noosa Resort and Spa, who have donated a breakfast for two voucher, Thai Thai Restaurant has offered a dinner for two voucher and Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club has offered drinks onboard the cruise.

In another shock announcement Petra received a donation from Frangipani Dreams of $5000.

The family is saving to purchase an accessible vehicle for eight-year-old Jack, who was born with cerebral palsy.

“Thank you so much for putting another beautiful article in the paper, we had a great response from it and I also received from the Frangipani Dreams a cheque of $5000, it almost blew me away,” Petra wrote to Noosa Today.

The participants have been shedding the kilos since the journey commenced in early September.

The eight participants are not only facing the challenges of rigorous exercise, but almost more important is managing their eating habits and cutting back any bad habits.

The participants will take part in a martial arts class with expert trainer Simon Golland at the Jetts Noosa Gym this Saturday, 15 November.

MEMBER for Noosa Glen Elmes says timing is everything in the bid to realign Noosa Council’s boundary to include four additional Sunshine Coast Council suburbs.

He said there also needed to be an overwhelming majority of those residents in favour of the boundary change, in order for it to go ahead.

Speaking with Noosa Today, Mr Elmes said he would love to see Eumundi, Doonan, Verrierdale and Weyba Downs join Noosa Council - but it’s not something he can decide.

“This is something for the people of these suburbs to decide via a vote,” he said.

“The Sunshine Coast Council needs to stop being belligerent and at least let the people of the four suburbs make the decision.”

Recalling the de-amalgamation of Noosa Council from the Sunshine Coast Council last year, Mr Elmes said the passion and determination from Noosa residents was consistent and formed the majority view.

“Noosa residents in their thousands turned out and actively campaigned to split from Sunshine Coast Council, and their efforts were rewarded,” he said.

However, Mr Elmes said now was not the time for the EDV Residents Group, leading the charge, to be attempting to change boundaries as campaigning for the State Government election possibly in March next year is underway.

“There’s a need to let the air clear, wait for the election to be over in the first half of next year before putting forward an application,” he said.

Member for Noosa Glen Elmes said the new service, which comes as a recommendation of the Queensland Child Protection Commission, will shift the focus from placing children in care to keeping families together.

“Instead, they will have access to information, support and referrals through this new service,” he said.

The new service will operate through two arms.

Act For Kids will facilitate the new Sunshine Coast Family and Child Connect service, while local organisation United Synergies, will offer support through an intensive family support service.

United Synergies CEO Christopher John said the new service was a community-based approach and will focus on families most at risk of having a child removed.

“We will be addressing issues in the home, such as violence, and making sure young people grow up happy,” he said.

United Synergies will be able to assist 110 Sunshine Coast families each year.

“This is a good win for the Sunshine Coast,” Mr John said.

“The area needs additional support and this will provide it.”

Mr John said United Synergies will also work with the local university to offer social work students hands-on experience in a placement program.

University of the Sunshine Coast Associate Professor and social work program co-ordinator Christine Morley said the university was delighted to join with United Synergies.

“It means there will be increased opportunities for our students to be part of new and innovative developments that are happening in local service delivery,” she said.

Social work students at USC undertake 1000 hours of field placement in local human service organisations under the supervision of a qualified social worker.

“Placements are an excellent opportunity for students to integrate the theory and practice/ class room based learning, with real life practice experience,” Professor Morley said.

“Students often talk about placement as one of the most challenging, rewarding, and sometimes profoundly life changing parts of their studies.

“Placements also mean that students graduate with work ready skills and practical experience in the field.

“A number of social work students at USC have entered the paid workforce directly from their placement experiences.”

United Synergies will begin to accept students for placement from February 2015.

The invitation-only event turned on the glam with a red carpet entry and special guest Sydney fashion blogger Antoinette Marie, who was hosted by Tourism Noosa.

Sporting greats ups and downs Benny’s

SPORT has been my life but it sure has its ups and downs, as my column relates to this week.

Two Aussie greats, triathlete Jackie Fairweather and Noosa’s tennis ace Pat Rafter, have featured in the headlines this week at either end of the scale.

Two-time US open winner and former world number one Rafter has been given Australian tennis’ most daunting task as director of performance.

While remaining Davis Cup captain, the Sunshine Beach resident will oversee Tennis Australia’s program in a hope of developing leading teenage prospects into world beaters.

Pat’s strong passion for new blood has already plunged Nick Kyrgious and Thanasi Kokkinakis into the cut-throat world of Davis Cup, with great success.

In fact, Kyrgious went on to make the Wimbledon quarter-finals and world top 70.

Tennis Australia has complete faith in Rafter’s ability, describing his role as “the most powerful in professional ranks in the nation” and confirming his leadership will help “bring one of the world’s strongest groups of teenage talent through to professional success’’.

This must have been a big decision, but I doubt Pat wouldn’t have taken up the challenge if he wasn’t comfortable in himself and family.

“I feel the time is right to step into this role and help us take the next step”’.

His cause will be helped even more as the latest statistics show seven men aged 21 or younger ranked in the world’s top 250.

I think Pat’s main asset and lethal weapon is his dinky-di Aussie attitude to life, that will only help and give his charges a true reflection of how they are travelling.

To the other end, last Sunday witnessed some terrific performances in the main event of this year’s Triathlon Festival.

The race that continues to be a steppingstone for future greatness with most running a personal best time and enjoying the opportunity of competing against some of the best in the country.

Sadly that night, in Canberra Jackie Fairweather decided it was all too much, losing her battle with depression, as she had just had enough, aged only 46.

The former dual World Champion was one of the best and certainly one of the toughest.

During her era in the early ’90s Jackie, Emma Carney and Loretta Harrop led the way in the world of triathlon.

Their fierce competition drove them all to world dominance and a thorn of all competitors around the world.

I called many of Jackie’s races in the early ’90s and had the pleasure of her company behind the microphone after she hung up the runners.

Just like on the track, she called it as she saw it and at times dissected the race as it unfolded explaining what competitors were doing wrong.

Jackie came from a running background to which she went back to after triathlons, winning the Gold Coast Marathon and claiming bronze at the 2002 Commonwealth Games.

Both Jackie and Pat are champions, but gee sport can be cruel sometimes.

Noosa vision IF ONLY the Sunshine Coast Council had the same positive outlook on something. I wish here, at Coolum, we could go to Noosa Council. As fishermen, we still see everything dragged out of the sea, either for bait, cat food and some for consumption. I have not seen a fish caught on Coolum for a long time. TO the Noosa Police for hosting the movie night and pre-screening of ‘Let’s Be Cops’ at BCC Noosa Cinemas last week. Great night out and the film was hilarious.

Soup from a stone FROM the limited information provided to the people of Noosa by Noel Playford and Brett de Chastel, the cost of their commitment to reamalgamate Noosa with the northern end of the Sunshine Coast is $10 million plus local government CPI every year.

Despite the fact the ratepayers of Noosa have had no say in what must be seen as a great hypocrisy for the sake of payback, they need to know in no uncertain terms “what existing projects, programs, or capital works will be cut from the existing budget to cover the costs of re-amalgamation?” Or perhaps there are another 100 staff to make redundant?

Hopefully these simple questions can be answered, where others haven’t been for over three months.

What I'd like YOU asked. Would you like to see more street performers across Noosa? No, not really. But really, what I would not like to see more of is ...

Noosa Tris, Noosa Surf Festivals, Noosa Food Festivals, Noosa Wine Festivals. I’ve only lived here for more than 20 years, but don’t claim to be a local as I’m not Aboriginal, I’m Native American Lakota tribe, in fact. I moved here for what Noosa WAS. You know what would be nice? Is if the council could make a weekend or maybe a week where Noosa was like it used to be.

Where Noosa was the way it was when people, like myself, moved here that long ago, and longer.

None of those festivals is what made me want to come live here, or the shopping, or the restaurants. I’m not going to even ask why people want to change a little piece of paradise.

And I’m not afraid to give my name.

Social climbers I HAVE just read with distaste an article in the local paper of the hill climb event along Gyndier Drive. It is not the fact that people find this fun or entertaining (each to their own) or the fact that it is noisy, adds to pollution and a waste of valuable resources, (once again a case of one man’s poison), but the sheer fact and audacity that the reporter stated that the road had be specially upgraded and repaired for the event. Moreover, that the feel of rubber on this new improved surface was almost heaven-sent.

Well I for one or anyone living in the hinterland of Noosa would like to see our local roads improved and upgraded, and I would certainly like to be able to drive into town avoiding the numerous potholes, cracks and be able to see the white lines at night.

Maybe some of the alleged money generated by the event can be spent on improving our roads! As a final note, at least these hoons and revheads have chosen a safe venue, not like the midnight morons who seem to be out most evenings disturbing the peace and damaging roads, I just wish they would hit one of the potholes in my road!

“I rarely go anywhere without a camera, so I suppose that makes me a passionate amateur photographer,” Ash said.

“For this shot I used my pocket camera- Canon Powershot SX 260.”

Ash said the camp grounds around Cootharaba provide the perfect locations for photography buffs.

“Best sunrise spot and a great variety of animals in natural surroundings,” Ash said.

“I love the relationship between the river, ocean, beach and national park.

“Any day of the week I can be a tourist in my own backyard and it costs me nothing."

ational fishing the Noosa area since my father used to take me as a child, I would like to comment on your story on (Noosa Today, 6 November), Net Fishers Cop a Foul.

Firstly I want to applaud Noosa Council for trying to get the netting banned on the north shore! It’s good to see that someone is finally prepared to take a stand about this unsustainable practice.

It’s no wonder the commercial net fishermen are copping abuse! I have personally witnessed their netting activities and I have struggled to understand why something hasn’t been done sooner.

Richard Brown from Markwell Fisheries made comments in your story which irritate, frustrate and annoy me, and I’m sure they have the same effect on many other people as well.

He mentions a lack of understanding - there are certainly things here that I don’t understand, for instance: “They fish mullet, a seasonal fish that lasts six to eight weeks” - why is it then that commercial net fishers are targeting this area for much longer periods than this?

“The mullet stock caught is all used” - I would have to question this - what happens to the mullet not fit for human consumption? In fact, I would have to question what happens to all the tailor, flathead, bream, whiting and dart by-catch as well.

Having witnessed a netting event like this on the North Shore, I saw first-hand tons (I was told later it was 7.5 tons) of fish lying in the sun and therefore wasted as it could not all be put onto ice.

On this occasion the net fishermen involved had too many fish to load onto ice. They had their nets full of not only mullet but all the previously mentioned species on the beach by 2pm in the afternoon. At 5.30pm they were still loading fish onto their vehicles. Most of the fish were lying in the sun for that period of time.

The fish are supposed to go straight onto ice - there was only one of a number of vehicles that had an icebox on the back, the others only had wire or mesh containers on the back of their utes. There is obviously a health problem here. So Mr Brown, what happens to fish like this that have been lying in the sun for hours?

Or stock that is damaged or bruised in crates on the back of hot utes? And what about the by-catch?

You say you still buy it at a lower price, but what happens if it’s unfit for human consumption? By the way, I did phone fisheries about this at the time, they said straight away that there was a health issue ... but as far as I know nothing was done about it.

“Leaving local families without a job?”

Can’t you see, or don’t you want to admit, that if the netting continues there will be no fish left

in the future anyway. Better to do something about it now before it’s too late and there are no fish left.

Mr Brown, you are absolutely right - the issue is about what is happening inshore in the Noosa area.

Many are proud of the “Noosa Biosphere” which is supposed to promote “harmony between people and nature through education, conservation and sustainable activities”. Sustainable activities? The people who brought us this biosphere have obviously not looked at the net fishing - it is simply not sustainable!

Mr Brown is worried that “kids will not be taught how to fish in the future” - does he mean commercial net fishing? Or does he mean recreational fishing? There is a vast difference between the two - I know plenty of kids that are being taught to fish responsibly and sustainably as recreational anglers.

By the way the beam trawling in the Noosa River is another story in itself - no doubt this issue should be addressed as well ... but one thing at a time ...

Failed survey IN RESPONSE to Joy and Bryan’s letters, let me make three important points.

1. The whole EDV campaign is based on a highly inaccurate survey showing 80 per cent support, that has been cut to bits by anyone who cares to have a good look at it. Why do you think the EDV group has gone to the trouble of paying for another survey if they were satisfied with that one in the first place!

2. Joy mentioned easier and closer access to Noosa Council as being a big plus to the locals.

Guess what Joy, we don’t need to go there: we’ve got Division 9 and 10 councillors, Steve Robinson and Greg Rogerson to represent us here, we voted for them and they are doing a great job for the area. And keep in mind, that the Noosa Council has admitted that the EDV region will have NO representation at all!

3. The most important thing is that “Noosa cannot afford us”. Even Brett de Castel, the Noosa Council CEO, has admitted that taking the EDV region is “budget negative”, meaning that the cost of services and maintenance will not be covered by the amount of rates collected. What it means to us, is that we will have our rubbish collected and road maintained, and that’s it. Forget about new infrastructure, new roads etc...

The choice for us locals is simple: no money, no representation, no Noosa.

Mr Scott’s winning design is a commercial building nestled among the natural bush in the Sunshine Coast hinterland.

The studio features a plywood interior and glass frontage to make the most of the breathtaking views and six-metre drop to the forest floor.

When building, Mr Scott said there were a number of factors to consider given the building’s location.

“The idea was to build a studio for six staff on a tricky, steep slope,” he said.

“The challenge was to build the studio with its highest point close to 5 metres off the ground on steel posts, perched in the treetops and surrounded by natural bush, with a view over a steep valley.

“The owners had the real estate but never considered it feasible to build an office on the property.”

Before building, Mr Scott and his team began early exploration of the land to ensure the design would be possible.

“We had the builder involved prior to concept stage to ensure build-ability, to determine how to erect scaffolding on the

site and site access for machinery,” he said.

“Once the site constraints were fully understood, the building form was developed to accommodate six staff in an open-plan office with storage space.”

Mr Scott said each building material was chosen with the unique design in mind and what resulted was a minimalist office space, furnished with varnished blonde, custommade timber furnishings, nestled among the treetops.

GOOD Shepherd Lutheran College’s middle and senior years students finished their Salvation Army Christmas Appeal on a high last Friday (7 November).

The students presented Christmas gifts for their “adopted” families to Lieutenant Lara Sutcliffe from the Noosa Corps of the Salvation Army.

Every student from Years 6 to 12 participated in the appeal through the college’s 24 secondary pastoral care groups, and all six classes in Years 6 and 7, with each group/class “adopting” one needy person from seven different families in the

Noosa area who will be doing it tough this Christmas.

Lieutenant Sutcliffe said she was amazed by the number of gifts as she accepted them on behalf of the recipients, who range from toddlers to teenagers, through to parents.

“We are completely overwhelmed with the fantastic generosity you have shown here today and you should all be really proud of yourselves,” she said.

“It is because of your generosity these kids will wake up on Christmas morning to Santa Claus. There won’t be an empty tree – there will be hope.”

Just over three weeks ago, Lieutenant Sutcliffe visited the college to launch the Good Shepherd Salvation Army Christmas Appeal, with the help of the school’s community senior leader group. It was during this visit that she spoke to the students of the desperate need that exists within the local community at this time of year and asked them for their help in bringing Christmas to seven local families.

According to Tony Purcell, pastoral care co-ordinator at Good Shepherd, this appeal has proven to be a huge success over the past few years.

Kids cop it sweet at flicks

Noosa police teamed up with BCC Noosa cinemas to screen the comedy on 5 November, with all funds raised used to provide youth-focused programs and the ever-popular Blue Light Dances.

ACTING on doctor’s orders, I slowed down last week. It was the strangest feeling.

Barred from entering my office, forced to surreptitiously check emails from inside a locked dunny, watching pointless cricket matches on TV without a work project on my lap, sprawled out poolside reading paperback crime thrillers, actually having conversations with my grandkids, I slowly began to realise that this was what life was meant to be like. I recalled that old line about how no sane person is going to lie on their deathbed wishing they’d spent more time at the office, and wondered why I’d ever forgotten it. I started the long process of remembering how to chill out.

When my working life began 45 years ago, my mantra was always never become a slave to a job, always seek out the adventurous path.

By and large, that’s what I’ve done, a decade or so in the corporate jungle notwithstanding, but somewhere along the line, working to your own rule book morphed into 100-hour weeks and the constant stress of deadlines. I know I’m not alone in this, but somehow, without me realising it, I became a slave to not having a real job. Once he got demobbed from the RAAF, my dad never worked for the man again for the rest of his life, but no man ever worked harder.

A small businessman, he worked all day in his shops, then came home and “did the books” until long after I’d been sent to bed. Saturday afternoons he rearranged the showrooms and Sundays he worked around the house. It was a lot, but never enough. He kept taking on more.

He became a stalwart of Rotary and in 1955, when I was four, he stood for the NSW parliament in a seat regarded as unwinnable for his party. This was correct, as it turned out, but he gave Rex “Buckets” Jackson the fright of his life. I saw how hard Dad worked and thought he was crazy, as much as I loved him, and yet it turned out I had inherited those genes. Fear of doing nothing just crept up on me. Well, I’ve had my little wake-up call. It’s time to stop and smell the roses. Everything can wait, including you if you’re trying to contact me this week.

Vale Madame Jardine AT THE risk of turning this column into the obituaries page, in a springtime of sadness I must also mention the passing of a dear old

friend in France, not a name many will recognise but an interesting footnote to surfing history. Madame Mayie Jardine was the doyenne of style in the tiny village of Guethary, on the Basque coast of south west France, where we were privileged to live for several years. The widow of a Scottish businessman named Douglas Jardine (no relation to the notorious Bodyline cricket captain of England), Mayie turned the family home, just off the village square, into a quaint bed and breakfast. Having just a tiny walk-up flat above the bar-tabac, we would often refer Australian visitors to Madame Jardine, or the slightly plusher Hotel Madrid if they were better-heeled.

In this way, many of our friends became her friends. Photographer Rennie Ellis stayed there on a couple of occasions and corresponded with Mayie on a regular basis. When we had to pass on the news of his untimely death in 2003, she was mortified. “I cannot hear this news,” she cried, putting her hands over her ears and running back into her hotel. But at sunset she was on the terrace at the Madrid to join us in a toast to his memory.

Madame Jardine owned the square in Guethary. An expensive scarf thrown casually over her tailored suit, she would walk slowly up the slight hill from her residence, stopping to chat with every neighbour, before settling at a streetside table at Hotel Madrid for a morning coffee, or on the terrace side for an afternoon aperitif, or perhaps across the street at the Bar Basque for a sunset glass of wine.

She was friends with everyone who lived in our building, but no one more so than our downstairs neighbour, Miki Dora. Miki, the legendary rebel surfer from Malibu, California, could be a prickly customer at times, but Mayie knew how to put him in his place immediately with a stern glance, followed quickly by a mocking smile. When Miki got sick she comforted him like a son, although in fact there were not that many years between them. And when the cancer finally took him, she was heartbroken.

At Miki’s memorial service on the cliff-top at Guethary, overlooking those beautiful waves, I remember her standing with Miki’s father and stepmother, so dignified in her sadness.

And now Madame Jardine has gone too.

Vale Mayie, a long life lived well.

Sweet Sorrows at the Villa AUSTRALIAN blues rock band The Black Sorrows are in town, performing at the Villa Noosa tomorrow night, from 7.30pm.

Now touring their 17th album “Certified Blue”, The Black Sorrows featuring Joe Camilleri will take to the stage to deliver their signature rock and blues mix that has become the soundtrack of the ’90s for so many Australians.

Singer, songwriter, saxophonist, producer and man of many talents, Camilleri, formed the band in 1983, and while the band has had a long list of changing members, the popularity and professionalism of their music has stayed the same.

The Black Sorrows have sold more than a million albums and have released classics such as Chained to the Wheel, Harley and Rose and Hold Onto Me. Their new album has been described as a mix of blues, ballads, rock, country, gospel, swing and honky tonk along with some of the best songs Camilleri has written.

The Black Sorrows will play at the Villa Noosa, Mary Street, Noosaville, on Friday, 14 November, with doors open from 7.30pm.

IT’S curtains up for the Sunshine Coast’s newest musical theatre school, the Coast Academy of Song and Dance.

After nine years of travelling the world to sing, dance and act, Anna Quayle is back in Noosa and ready to share her passion with her students.

The Coast Academy of Song and Dance will be open to everyone of all ages and abilities, offering school-age focussed classes, as well as private singing tuition.

“I am not limiting classes to young people,” she said. “If there are adults wanting to get involved, I am happy to organise extra classes if there is enough interest - who knows, we could put on a big community show with everyone.”

Anna said musical theatre is a great art to learn, as everyone has the chance to shine and is given the opportunity to become a wellrounded performer.

“I am focussing on musical theatre classes, as this is the type of performance I find most fun for

“I want my students to be as good as they can be,” she said.

“But, I also want them to have the most fun they’ll have all week, at my classes. This has a knock-on effect as they then also become more confident and much better performers generally.

“The more fun performers have on stage ... the more fun the audience will have.”

shops are available throughout the Christmas holidays and will be held at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.

3. Put the milk into a large jug and beat in the egg.

4. Place a pan over medium heat and stir together the butter, treacle golden syrup and sugar, until the butter has melted.

5. Pour the sugar mix into the dry ingredients, followed by the milk and egg mix. Beat with a wooden spoon until well mixed.

6. Pour the mixture into the loaf or cake tin and bake in the oven for 90 minutes or until the loaf has risen and feels firm to the touch.

7. Leave the cake in the tin until it is cool enough to handle and then turn it out on a wire rack to cool further.

Once cool, it is common to wrap the cake in greaseproof paper and foil then stored for a few days before eating.

This will make the cake extra sticky and gingery.

“For us, this is something we

can get involved in. You can physically get hands on with the building,” Matt said.

The fund-raising dinner will be held at Sirocco, Gympie Terrace, Noosaville, on 27 November.

LOCALS Matt and Tanya Grut need to raise $30,000 to help build a classroom in Vanuatu, and they’re calling on Noosa to help them reach their target.

As part of their fund-raising efforts, Matt and Tanya will host a fund-raising dinner at Sirocco Noosa in aid of charity organisation, Evidence Vanuatu, of which they are board memebrs.

Established in 2007, Evidence Vanuatu primarily focuses on building classrooms in a small Vanuatu village named Seaside, to help educate local children.

Matt says it’s easy for Australians to take for granted a functioning social system and education that is easily accessible, but after visiting the tiny village for the past five years, Matt says he’s more motivated than ever to help the people of the village.

“It’s important to give back to those less fortunate,” he said.

“Many people ask why we’re not helping in Australia. We are, in other ways, but we are the lucky country and we want to help.”

Matt said the classrooms were helping to deliver education to a community who would have otherwise not had access as education was too expensive and too far away for the children to travel.

“The vision for the charity is for someone who went to the school to one day be Prime Minister of Vanuatu. It may not be in

IS FRUCTOSE really that bad?

Found naturally in fruit, some vegetables and honey, is fructose being unfairly blamed for the obesity epidemic or do we just eat and drink too many calories?

This is a question that was recently posed by researchers at the St Michael’s Hospital who reviewed more than 40 studies that supported the idea the fructose molecule was largely responsible for weight gain.

Some of the studies found excess fructose consumption may be a key driver for many of the most serious diseases of today, including obesity. But, when reviewing the effects of fructose on body weight in controlled eating trials, it was found issues such as obesity may not be caused by eating excess fructose.

Instead, it was found that one calorie is simply a calorie regardless of where the calorie comes from and the over consumption of calories is to blame.

Much attention and time has been given to the problem of fructose and its link to obesity and other lifestyle diseases, but many scholars believe the attention needs to be refocused onto moderation.

So, weight gain may not be about the type of calories consumed, but rather the amount of calories consumed.

At Friday Environment Forum on 14 November, Joan Heavey, co-author of the recently published book Weeds of the Sunshine Coast will demonstrate how removing weed species and allowing native vegetation to regenerate will encourage the return of native wildlife to local parks and your own backyard. For years Joan has worked alongside other volunteers, assisted by council grants to remove tonnes of weeds from local areas where native plant species are now regenerating, encouraging the return of birds, insects and reptiles. Come along to Noosa Parks Association’s Environment Centre, Wallace Drive, Noosaville, to be inspired by what Joan has achieved in public areas and in her own backyard. Help will be at hand to identify possible weed specimens if audience members are unsure whether to remove them from gardens, and copies of Weeds of the Sunshine Coast will be available for sale. OVER 70 guests enjoyed a great day at the Noosa Heads Lions Club fund-raising luncheon at the Riverdeck Restaurant, Noosa Marina, on 15 October in support of their People and Pets Project.

With gorgeous food, wine and chocs, a great time was had by all. The lovely spring fashion parade from Noosa Stylz Boutique, Noosa Marina, also featuring their beautiful Awaabi jewellery, was very popular with all the ladies. The lucky door prize of champagne and chocolates from Gifts To A Door, went down very well and the first prize in the raffle of a Whale One cruise, including morning tea along with a fabulous gift basket from Gibsons of Noosa with a total value of $300, was very well received.

Four lovely, local models paraded with great style - thank you to Joanne, Wendy, Roberta and Kylie. It’s gloves on for fisty fund-raiser A CROWD of 400 cheered on some of the bravest men in local sports, who took to the ring to box in the name of charity at the Noosa Box Office Contender of the Codes on Saturday.

The Contender of the Codes brought together representatives from each of the major sporting clubs in the region to fight it out and take home the winning title.

Winners on the night were Cahill “Clubber” Parkes of Noosa Tigers AFL, who took out the heavy-weight title, and Nick “Knuckles” Chapman of Noosa Dolphins Union, who took out the light-weight division.

The Noosa Tigers AFL team won the Mick Hamilton sporting community shield, which was accepted by coach James Gellie.

Local charity Sunshine Butterflies made the most of the event, raising $1700 through donations and auctioning a pair of Anthony Mundine boxing gloves for $600.

Sunshine Butterflies founder Leanne Walsh said the fund-raising efforts were great, and the team was very happy with the results.

Offshore anglers relish the calm

By JACK MANGROVE WITH the wind dropping, the weekend offshore anglers where out in force.

There were some great reports coming from most of the reefs - north reef was a standout with a great range of reef species all hitting the decks: large snapper, cod, pearl perch and sweetlip to name a few.

The Hards was another area that put the runs on the board with amberjack, gold ban snapper, and some monster pearlies.

We are also starting to signs of the pelagic with report of spotted mackerel moving around the reefs.

Looks like its going to be another sensational pelagic season.

The river has again been performing - we are so lucky

Whiting have again been the focus of a lot of landbased anglers, with the Dog Beach, Frying Pan and Gympie Terrace all reporting good sized fish - live worms and freshly pumped

yabbies have been the preferred baits.

There are also the fish that come out of left field, like a cobia out the front of the Coast Guard Station, and a barra captured and released (closed season at this time of the year) in - of all places - Woods Bay. On the beach, the lighter winds have given the beach anglers the chance to tangle with some great jewies as well as those tailor that are heading south. The southern beaches like Marcus and Peregian beaches have some great gutters at the moment perfect for a cruising large tailor or jew.

Remember limit your catch don’t catch your limit, because some fish are just too great to catch only once.

COOROY Eumundi cricket club welcomed two more century makers from last weekend's games.

A Grade batsman Joel Kennedy destroyed the opposition bowlers to post up his first century making a brilliant 124, while Andrew Thin in his first season at the club made a brilliant 103 in B Grade Congratulations to both of these players who have put in the hard work to achieve this magnificent achievement.

A GRADE KENILWORTH posted a handy total of 223 after the first day of play. Jordon McDermott was the best bowler with five wickets. Cooroy's batsmen had to stand tall and they did, a magnificent 124 by Joel Kennedy and a great 60 to Jesse Ritchie allowed the A Grade boys to notch up another win in a tough competition this year.

B GRADE COOROY lost the toss with Maleny batting first posting a score of 255. Jared Davis starred with the ball taking 5/49. A great start to the Cooroy innings with a 128-run opening stand from Andy 'Froffy' Thin and Kelsey Andrews had Cooroy in the box seat only to see a terrible performance by the middle order with only Jimmy Holloway offering some resistance to be bundled out for 225.

Best batsman was Andy Thin with 103.

C GRADE TRAVELLED to Yandina in the first week of a two-day game with only nine players - losing the toss the boys had to field. A big total was posted by Yandina, being all out for 266 with some great bowling by Sam Koch 4/43 and Andy Bowden 3/34.

Cooroy started their innings very well with a opening stand of 47 before losing quick wickets to be in trouble at 4/59. Ashley Woods and Mitch Kneale steadied the ship to see Cooroy all out for 172. Best batsmen were Ashley Woods 67, John Hope 36 and Mitch Kneale 24.

5TH DIVISION THE COUGAR 5ths started the day batting for the second time and still 290 runs behind Te-

wantin-Noosa. It proved to be a great day for junior cricketers playing in the seniors. The Cougars were all out for 188, however some outstanding personal performances were achieved.

Ben Mander made 53, George Giblett 24, Mitch Martin 20 and Josh Baldry hit a 4 and remained not out. As a club moving forward it is extremely important that young cricketers are exposed to and gain experience in the game we all love.

UNDER 16 THE Cougars under-16s had a first-innings win by 33 runs over a determined Yandina. The Cougars resumed at 2/57 and a fantastic 84-run third-wicket partnership from Odin Cussen and Chris Langfeldt saw the win achieved. Odin made an excellent 68 showing great powers of concentration and was well supported by Chris’s 41. The Cougars finished on 8/158 after their 55 overs. Yandina batted again and finished on 4/49 with George Giblett 2/0 and Ben Mander 2/2 the wicket takers.

UNDER 14 COOROY under-14s batted well but let themselves down in the field in a close match against Maroochydore. Maroochy scored 154 with the best bowlers being Corey Flood 3/21 and Zac Skyring 1/11. Cooroy batted well but ran out of overs to end their innings on 7/127.

Top scorers were Zac Skyring 23 and Corey Flood 19 not out.

UNDER 12 COOROY Eumundi under-12A won the toss and sent Flinders in to bat on a damp pitch. After their openers had been smashing it for a while, we got the first breakthrough with a great catch from skipper Riley Hobbs. We bowled them all out for 100, thanks to some great bowling from Marty Kelly (2/4) and Jack Ritchie (2/10). A shaky start saw a couple of ducks but after that, the runs came. High scorers Oscar Long (36), Marty Kelly (23) and Ryan Christensen (15) got us over the line with three overs to spare. Full credit to the boys for winning that one, it was a toughie.

Senior training will be under lights this Thursday starting at 5pm at The Cooroy Eumundi Cricket Club.

Wheel social climbers THE 17th annual Historic Noosa Hill Climb raced into action last weekend, as classic and collectible cars took to Gyndier Drive, Tewantin.

Held over two days, eventgoers enjoyed access to the pits and roadside viewing thanks to the grandstand, giving young and old the chance to get up close and personal with the drivers and their machines.

The annual event is hosted by the Noosa Beach Classic Car Club and all funds raised on the day are used to help local charities.

Club serves up the fun

By ANNETTE ADSETT COOLUM Tennis Club and Ash Tennis took part in the Australian Open sponsored Tennis-Tacular in Tickle Park last Saturday.

The day featured tennis activities with mini-courts, a speed serve and hitting targets.

Kids also high-fived Terry the Tennis Ball to complete their card and collect a tennis racquet.

Thanks to the workers and supporters from Coolum Tennis and Ash Tennis for making the day such a success.

We are following up this interest in tennis to have our own open day at Coolum Tennis Club next Saturday 15 November, from 10am until 2pm. There are prizes to be won as well as free tennis and a sausage sizzle. The major prize is either a family pass to the Brisbane International or two hours of free court hire on the Pat Rafter Arena that is valued at $400.

There are plenty of minor prizes as well.

We are also offering next year’s membership for new members at next year’s prices starting immediately. Come and sign up.

The ladies fixture season is near the end. The Tourists made third place although they struggled for players during the season. Good luck in the semi finals on Friday.

The Travellers had an exciting match against the team coming second in the competition. At the start of the last two sets, the Trav-

ellers (Jenny, Annette, Joan and Gloria) were only one game down.

Unfortunately, the team didn’t win either game, but with a creditable showing only ended up being four games down on the day. Good luck to Maroochydore in the finals.

This is the last week for the Tuesday night 3’s competition.

With six of the 12 teams from Coolum, we are hoping for a good showing in the finals. Five ladies teams of two players have another week to play their competition on Monday night at Coolum.

Our juniors played semi-finals at Noosa. These games were hard fought. Five teams made the semi-finals out of the seven teams Coolum had entered in the competition.

In Division 2, Nelly St Baker and Yani Mouland-Vail finished second as did James Christie and Zade Kurdi in Division 4. Also second in their division were Wade Smith and Maison from Division 5. The Division 7 team of Kristan Mc Lean and Shiran Mc Lean finished first in Division 7. Kristy Drain and Rehym Glover finished fourth in Division 6, but they won their semi-final to contest the final this weekend.

Good luck to all teams that made the finals. The parents reported that the quality of sportsmanship was unequalled from both winning and losing teams during the semi-finals.

Simon Wood and Danny Crameri took out first prize, scoring two wins and the highest margin in the second game. Winners of the first round losers section were Ian Sanday and Neil Walsh. Not many bowlers turned out on Melbourne Cup day, with Ray McComb and Les James having the best result in the men's pairs from runners-up Geoff Davis and Walter Zemler. Wednesday ladies winners were Joan Laney, Valerie Bush and Beryl Nelson. Taking second prize were Carol Coole, Phyl Bolton and Et Kellett.

Nippers make it look easy

By NATASHA FABULIC IT was 5.30am last Sunday morning when 26 Sunshine Beach Nippers boarded the bus bound for Redcliff, full of team spirit.

The carnival day started with not a ripple in sight - piece of cake for our under-10 board riders and swimmers, who blitzed the competition.

As the day progressed however, the wind picked up to 25 to 30 knots and the ocean turned from a mill pond

to a choppy mess.

The last few club Sundays at Sunshine Beach, dealing with a big shore dump, gave them the skills and confidence for this to be no problem.

No complaints about the conditions were heard from the Nippers and all kids gave it their best.

A big shout out to the under-9 team who are new to the board events but looked like professionals.

The under-8 team was also spec-

tacular and a team to watch develop over the coming seasons.

The all-age relay, saved for last, was the highlight of the carnival.

However, the highlight of the day must go to the “all-you-can-eat” Sizzler buffet stop-over on the way home where the kids took to the food like there was no tomorrow.

Saved lives speak volumes EARLY Sunday morning the lifesavers at Sunshine Beach were setting up for the day’s patrol.

On the water’s edge a young couple in their early twenties decided to swim.

Without checking they entered a rip, were swept on to a sand bank, off the bank and out a further 40 metres.

As soon as the trouble started patrolman Jackson Law, a 16-year-old year 11 student at St Teresa’s College, started to move.

For Jackson, who started his career as an eight-year-old Nipper at Sunshine, all the years of training suddenly clicked in.

Grabbing a rescue board, Law paddled out to the couple who were now floating behind the bank and after calming them moved them on to his board and back to the beach.

Safe, the couple regained their composure said thanks and all was well.

Down through the years people often ask about all the money, time and effort that are required to run the Nippers. Is it worthwhile?

Well, this incident answers with a resounding ‘yes’!

Every weekend around Australia this type of rescue will occur, so it is only right that the lifesavers, mums and dads who work, train and eventually guide their nippers into the ranks of the senior clubs, should stand up and take a bow.

They deserve it.

On Saturday morning at North Burleigh SLSC the founding members and trainers of the Noosa Seahorse Nippers met with a special group of parents.

with special needs and the reason for the meeting was to explain in detail the workings of the Seahorse Nippers. After visiting Noosa to watch the Seahorse Nippers North Burleigh Surf Club delegates with the support of their management committee, invited the Noosa people to their club to conduct a pilot program.

To say that the program was a success would be an understatement.

Apart from Burleigh representatives, Assistant to the Minister for Disability Services Tarnya Smith, local MP Michael Hart and Gold Coast Regional Manager for Surf Life Saving Lachlan Sherrington were on the beach. Also in attendance was Liz Pluimers, the winner of this year’s ladies Coolangatta Gold.

Liz has accepted the office of patron of the North Burleigh special Nippers. Tarnya Smith, who stayed for the duration of the program, said: “I love the reaction of the children and I will certainly give this my total support.” Sherrington agreed. “The whole concept is brilliant.

“The kids’ parents and the young surf club volunteers were great.

“It was especially good to see the attitude of our young clubbies - you could see they loved it.”

Noosa co-ordinator Steve Mawby said: “It has been a big success, well received and North Burleigh is totally supported.

“This was the first time that we

“Also today we had the experience of handling four non-verbal children, but all went well.

“After all, this is what we do we help kids with special needs.”

To ensure all went well the Noosa

team took all their own equipment and travelled by bus which was kindly loaned by St Teresa’s College.

The weekend saw the first round of the Navy Surf Boat Series, a two day event which was held at Surfers Paradise.

For Noosa the ladies finished in the top three and the Masters known as the Emus finished in the top two overall on a points score system.

The reserves performed well on Saturday but were wiped out on Sunday. The next in the series will be 2 December at Broadbeach.
