MORE than 20,000 spectators turned out for one of the biggest multi-sport festivals to date. The Noosa Triathlon Multi-Sport festival saw the streets of Noosa lined with cheering crowds as over 12,000 competitors swam, ran or cycled their way to glory.

At the main event, it was a double win for Australia with locals Aaron Royle and Ashleigh Gentle taking out top spots at the Subaru Noosa Triathlon on Sunday.

Masters appeal

By JONATHON HOWARD NOOSA Council will consider appealing a ruling from the Planning and Environmental Court that orders council to pay 85 per cent of legal fees from a development application to establish a Masters Home Improvement Centre in the Noosa Shire Business Centre.

The council was unsuccessful in defending its decision to reject the development application in the Planning and Environment Court and the appellant has sought court costs.

Applicant Hydrox Nominees Pty Ltd, who submitted the application to build a Noosa Masters, was successful on all but one of the issues which had been in dispute during the appeal.

The issue was the level of conflict with the provisions of the planning scheme relating to development within relevant precincts of the Noosa Shire Business Centre.

Noosa councillor Tony Wellington said the decision to refuse the Masters development application for Noosaville was a majority decision

made by the former Sunshine Coast Council.

“The decision to defend the appeal was also the product of a majority vote of Sunshine Coast councillors,” Cr Wellington wrote in a written response to Noosa Today.

“It is important to note that, as a councillor on that council, I had no

influence over the choice of expert consultants engaged, nor was I able to have any significant input into the way that appeal was run.

“I can say that I was decidedly unhappy with the choice of economic consultant to help defend the appeal.”

WOW, what a weekend of sport for the Sunshine Coast – of course led by the Noosa triathlon, with two great stories coming out of it.

No, it’s got nothing to do with the boring overused how much money was injected in the economy, nor was it how many races 82-year-old Markus Hanley has done.

First up was the induction of Emma Snowsill and Steve Moneghetti into the Walk of Fame.

As I wrote last week, Emma in my opinion is what this event is all about, this race is the steppingstone to greatness.

It was 2003 when this virtually unknown crossed the line for the first of many great wins that would roll out for her over the next nine years.

Her mum and dad were standing on the roadside, hadn’t made the VIP criteria at that stage.

I went searching for them to have a chat on the microphone as I knew they would be over the moon with their daughter’s win.

Hugs, tears you name it, both parents just ecstatic to see the current Sydney Youth Olympics winner beat some of her idols for the first time.

As they say the rest is history, but allow me to remind you: World champion, Commonwealth Games gold medallist and of course 2008 Olympic champion.

The induction really means a lot to the now Noosa resident, she led the way for her country in helping break the duck at the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.

Becoming the first and only Aussie Olympic gold medallist, the Walk Plaque will sit proudly alongside that medal in her cabinet.

For marathon man Steve Moneghetti, the honour adds to a colossal smorgasbord of achievements but knowing Steve, it too will sit proudly in his home.

The Victorian was first brought to Noosa to help lift the profile and encourage everyday people to have a go.

Like Emma, Steve has done it all – world championships, four Commonwealth and four Olympic Games medals, City to Surf wins, run in most distance events across the country.

But more than that, he is a great bloke who loves helping others and thoroughly deserves his entry into the ever growing Walk of Fame.

The second story, and maybe the best news I’ve heard for 20 years, is that next year’s swim leg could be held on the main beach.

Now that’s news, and a move I fully support as I believe it will elevate this event into the top of the world stage.

The event has outgrown the canal swim leg and the move to the beach is simply the way to go for the future.

The idea was first propped up years ago when Friday’s Eyeline swim started to grow but logistics just weren’t right, but they are now, I only hope that the organisers ask me back to host that leg in 2015.

Congratulations to Mooloolaba’s Josh Minogue for winning last week’s Coolangatta Gold, he joins other local winners Michael King, Reece Drury and Darren Mercer in their exclusive winners’ list.

A right Royle finish

By Jolene Ogle AARON Royle made it two from two producing an outstanding sprint finish to defeat fellow Glasgow Commonwealth Games team mates Dan Wilson and Ryan Bailie. Royle said he was ecstatic to take out his second win, confirming he will be back in 2015 to defend his title.

“The legends of the sport have won here in Noosa, so to be up there with my name in the book is pretty special. I will be back next year,” he said.

For Royle, the win was an emotion moment following what was a tough race and close competition.

“I said to myself you can do this, you can win this,” Royle said.

“I saw that finish shoot and gave it everything I had. To be honest, I probably wasn’t feeling as good as I did last year where I did just go from the front from a couple of kilometres into the run.

“This year I felt like my best chance was to sit in, follow the surges and have a little few myself to test it out and then wait for the sprint finish.”

Gentle, who came second in Women’s last year and first in 2012 at the Subaru Noosa Triathlon, said it was amazing to take out her win this year.

“It means a big deal to win Noosa and to get on that Honour Roll multiple times is amazing,” she said.

It was a tough race with fellow competitors including Ironman specialists Liz Blatchford, Swiss Caroline Steffen, New Zealand’s Nicky Samuels and Canada’s Paula Findlay, but Gentle proved she had what it takes to push through. As they exited onto the run leg Gentle signalled her intentions early, boxed in by Blatchford and Steffen who were running side by side, she pushed through the gap and took the lead and held it until she crossed the finish line.

“I did say excuse me when I pushed into the lead, so at least my manners are okay,” Gentle said.

The pre-race favourite Gentle experienced some nerves leading into the race.

“I really wanted to please the home crowd so coming away with the win today is a bonus,” she said.

More than 20,000 spectators and 12,500 competitors made the 32nd five-day multisport festival, one of the biggest yet.

Tourism Noosa CEO Damien Massingham, who also competed in the triathlon, said the sports festival is one of the biggest on the Noosa events calendar, giving local tourism a massive boost.

“The event has grown to a five day event bringing competitors and visitors to Noosa, and the broader region midweek, staying through to the weekend,” he said.

“These visitors spend money throughout the local economy from accommodation, restaurants, retail and activities.”

Competitors are already looking forward to the 2015 Noosa Triathlon MultiSport Festival, with entries to events open from 13 November.

he said. To work towards a healthy environment it was important to shift the focus from banning commercial fishing to maintaining the local waterways, Mr Brown said.

“The issue isn’t about what’s happening out in the ocean, it’s inshore. If we’re not protecting that, forget about the rest of it,” he said.

“That’s the biggest issue we have ... we need to most definitely turn our attention inland.”

Mr Brown’s comments come after the Healthy Waterways report card found a decline in fish stock in Noosa’s freshwater waterways due to a lack of rain and therefore, habitat for fish to breed.

Mr Brown and Ms Eardley said they both share the same concern for the local fishing industry, that a continued push to oust commercial netters will lead to a decline in master fishermen.

“There are no kids being taught (to fish). There are no incentives to come into the industry,” Mr Brown said.

“Why would you come in to cop this sort of flack?”

Mr Williams is demanding commercial fishing be banned from both Noosa North Shore and the inner lake systems.

“We don’t want a sustainable approach, we want it to stop completely. Then the river systems can actually recover to what they were 40-50

years ago,” he said.

Mr Williams said there are plans to form a single body that will work to stop commercial fishing, which is what he said is currently a “losing battle”.

“We want to get a single body with knowledgeable people,” he said.

Mr Williams said Noosa Council’s decision to submit a request to ban commercial fishing on Noosa North Shore a fortnight ago was an “incredible start”.

COMMERCIAL fishermen have reported a barrage of daily abuse as the push to ban net fishing on Noosa’s North Shore heats up.

Tracey Eardley has fished for most of her life and turned to commercial net fishing almost 18 years ago when she bought her licence.

Since then, she has enjoyed a steady income from what she describes as hard, but enjoyable, work. But recently, with the Fisheries review of commercial fishing underway, Ms Eardley said she has faced daily abuse on the beach.

“I went to work last week, I went to Fraser, just me and another man ... we had the net, and I was out of the truck and these cars came past, three of them,” she said.

Ms Eardley said the drivers of the cars all swore at her and yelled abuse as they drove past. She described the incident as terrifying and said she was glad none of the cars stopped.

Richard Brown from Markwell Fisheries, a fishery wholesaler who has bought

Tracey’s fish stock for many years, said he believes the abuse stems from a lack of understanding of the commercial fishing industry.

“People like Tracey are self-employed, hard-working people, who are feeding us,” he said.

“Why on earth are people turning around and abusing them?

“They fish mullet, which is a seasonal fish that lasts six to eight weeks and isn’t caught on a line. Of the mullet stock caught, it is all used. We buy it.”

Mr Brown said previous stories of fish being used for cat food are “rubbish”, with fish heads usually re-used as bait.

“If stock is damaged or bruised, we still buy it but the fisherman gets a lower price than if the stock was in good condition,” he said.

Mr Brown said removing the commercial net fishermen from Noosa North Shore will set a “dangerous precedent” and leave many local families without jobs.

That’s the message from Noosa Council following a spike in complaints from local residents about irresponsible dog owners and their uncontrolled dogs, particularly in the Boreen Point and Sunshine Beach street areas.

Unleashed and wandering dogs can be distressing for some residents as well as a threat to local wildlife, which is why council is asking dog owners to exercise responsible pet ownership and make sure their dogs are on leads when off their properties.

Sunshine harvests sun SUNSHINE Coast Council has taken the next step in becoming Australia’s first local government organisation to build a solar farm.

Council has lodged a Material Change of Use (MCU) development application to build a 15 megawatt (MW) solar farm at Valdora to offset the organisation’s entire electricity consumption at its facilities and operations.

The solar farm is estimated to save Sunshine Coast Council millions of dollars over a 30-year period based on today’s electricity costs, which are anticipated to increase substantially in the future.

By JONATHON HOWARD DEVASTATED business owners in the Noosaville Industrial Estate are being forced to abandon their dreams and face closure, after a complaint prompted Noosa Council to issue several operating breach notices on Venture Drive and Project Avenue last week.

While several businesses have been operating for more than 18 years without a single letter or issue from council, it appears a complaint may have forced council’s hand on the matter.

The complaint was believed to have come from a potential new business owner who had contacted council to inquire about zoning constraints in the estate.

According to several sources the businessman was told he could not operate his office firm in the industrial estate due to area being zoned industrial.

The man subsequently pointed the finger at several current businesses highlighting their breaches and therefore prompting Noosa Council to check zoning and issue about eight breach letters.

The letters, which were all the same, identified the businesses as operations that were found to be inconsistent with the industrial zoning of the area.

The Noosaville Industrial Estate is zoned industrial for manufacturing businesses or those with no more than 20 per cent of retail as their primary business operation and with a focus on manufacturing.

The council letter has already prompted the closure of Peggy-Jane Second Hand Store, which had been on the verge of selling but the sale has now fallen through leaving the business owner with no option but to close after the owner’s lease expired recently.

The council letter stated the options included relocating or lodging a development application to seek approval for the use.

Mayor Noel Playford told

media sources that none of the businesses were expected to close their doors, nor will they be required to relocate until such time as their leases expire.

However, several businesses had signed contracts with renewal clauses and they remain unsure whether council would honour those contract extensions.

Several business operators were now considering whether to band together and invite Noosa councillors to attend their first meeting in an attempt to gain greater understanding of the breaches and their options with council.

Noosa Council was sought for comment on the matter, but council did not respond prior to the print deadline.

Fuel prices at Matilda Noosa Junction were considered low last week, but there’s a fuel rise on the horizon.

The Prime Minister told parliament his government had a “very clear mandate to fix the budget”.

“And the measure that the Leader of the Opposition refers to is a budget measure,” he said.

Treasurer Joe Hockey told parliament the fuel excise is necessary in order to help deliver the biggest road-building program in Australia’s history.

But Shadow Treasurer Chris Bowen said it was an extraordinary attempt to “ambush and blackmail” the parliament.

The indexation of fuel duty will return to biannual CPI indexation from 1 February, 2015.

Senator Cormann said the delay in imposing fuel indexation as of 1 August as planned has meant a loss of $35 million in revenue.

However, he said this was a small figure compared to the $19 billion that would be raised over the next decade.

Traders groups, such as the Junction Traders and Noosaville Businesss associations, will assess a street performer’s fit with the precinct in which they are applying to perform.

The new plan encourages traders to consult with veteran local musicians for advice, while allowing them the scope to shape a suitable audition process.

While council will retain the final say, the traders groups’ assessment panels can make recommendations as to whether performers are a suitable fit for each precinct.

Councillor Frank Wilkie said the new policy aimed to enhance the vibrancy of Noosa’s outdoor precincts.

“The policy allows for experienced traders from Noosa’s precincts to shape the sorts of street performance that best complements their areas, as well as develop working relationships with the talent,” Cr Wilkie said.

The new approach replaces the former system inherited following deamalgamation, where council officers assessed and determined street performers’ applications.

Veteran Noosa singer/songwriter Harii Bandhu, who provided input on the policy, said it was a positive new approach.

NOOSA motorists can expect to pay about $3 extra to fill up at the fuel pump, according to the Australian Automobile Association which has slammed the 40 cent projection by Prime Minister Tony Abbott.

The Federal LNP government is bypassing senate opposition to its budget plan to reintroduce fuel excise indexation, by imposing the interim tariff from 10 November.

The tariff on oil companies will increase the fuel excise from 38.1 to 38.6 cents a litre which the government hopes will raise an additional $2.2 billion over four years.

Mr Abbott refuted claims the tariff was a new tax but insisted the indexation was an old tax that will cost the average family 40 cents for a 50-litre tank.

Australian Automobile Association chief Andrew McKellar said a closer look at the government’s projection over the next three to four years revealed the tariff would be substantially more than that.

“It will be adding two to three dollars each time you fill up the car,” he said.

Parliament has 12 months to support the decision or the government would be forced to repay the oil companies $2.2 billion.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten described the decision as outrageous while motoring groups called it gutless, sneaky and tricky.

Mr Shorten said Mr Abbott had no mandate from the people or parliament for this petrol rise.

He pointed out the decision came less than 24 hours after Mr Abbott told parliament he wanted a “mature discussion” about taxes.

A dip to beat heat

By JONATHON HOWARD SCORCHING temperatures across Noosa last week prompted residents to run for cover in air-conditioned shopping centres. Although cooler temperatures returned this week, summer is fast approaching.

To find out how locals cope with the heat, Noosa Today hit the streets to ask: “what are some ways you can cool down without breaking the bank with air-

Peter and Hannah Bycroft said they often escape the heat with a cool drink and a dip in the Noosa River.

“Apart from that we just sit through it and suffer,” Ms Bycroft said.

Jenet Davis said it was too expensive to run the aircon all day.

“Instead we find a big mango tree, setup our easy chairs with some cool drinks and put some music

on,” she said.

Tracey Davis said Noosa’s beautiful beaches were the best way to beat the heat.

“Hit the beach and get under a gazebo with some cool drinks,” she said.

ID scanner invaluable to venue

By JONATHON HOWARD LAGUNA Jack’s Steak House on Hastings Street has become Noosa’s first venue to install ID scanning technology.

The ID scanner will capture an image of each and every patron’s identification and the data will be held for up to three months.

Laguna Jack’s owner John Whimpress said the machine cost about $1000, but the safety and security it provides was invaluable.

“This will ensure that every person passing into the venue will have their ID scanned,” he said.

“This is also hooked into our CCTV system and enables our security to know the identity of any trouble makers.”

Father of one Jarrad Thwaites pleaded guilty to one count of common assault in the Noosa Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

The court heard on 15 March Thwaites punched the marshal in the back of the head because he thought the man was going to hit his friend.

Police Prosecutor Shane Raison said the marshal grabbed Thwaites by the throat following the attack and held him against a fence.

Defence lawyer Anna Smith described the attack as spontaneous and reactionary, and said her client hadn’t been drinking heavily.

Thwaites was fined $500 for the offence.

No conviction was recorded.

Police are once again reminding visitors and locals to lock their cars and take their valuables with them after a 19-year-old man was caught with $4000 worth of stolen credit cards.

Police will allege the man broke into a number of unlocked cars throughout Peregian Springs and Peregian Beach, taking coins and wallets with credit cards.

The Little Mountain man now faces numerous charges of fraud.

Molotov charges A 29-year-old man has been charged following a Molotov cocktail attack on a man in Yandina.

Police charged the man on Monday and will allege on 2 November at 1.30am, the man threw the Molotov cocktail at a Koongalba Street home before being confronted by the 43-year-old occupant.

The man allegedly threw a second Molotov cocktail at the victim, who suffered minor burns to his arms and chest.

The 29-year-old man has been charged with one count of acts intended to maim and one count of unlicensed driving and appeared in Maroochydore Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

SCIENTISTS at the University of the Sunshine Coast have announced that they have successfully vaccinated wild koalas against chlamydia, long thought to be one of the biggest threats to the survival of the species.

Female koalas can get reproductive tract disease which might lead to infertility, and large painful cysts that can be fatal. Both male and female koalas can develop eye infections that can result in blindness, University of the Sunshine Coast microbiologist, professor Peter Timms, says the vaccine was initially tested on captive koalas with good results. His team then vaccinated 30 wild koalas in the Moreton Bay region with very promising results, with the vaccine halting existing infection and preventing new infection.

“None of our vaccinated animals went from having an infection to getting actual disease,” says Professor Timms. It may be unrealistic to vaccinate every koala, but Professor Timms says it would make sense to treat the hundreds of animals that enter care centres for whatever reason, before they are released back into the wild.

To date, with the Queensland government policy of euthanising infertile koalas - a policy recently flagged for change by the Newman government - chlamydia has been responsible for about 50 per cent of all koala deaths. The combination of a change in government policy to reduce euthanisations and a new vaccine against this devastating disease is cause for real excitement. It will end the distortion to the cause of death data, and potentially remove disease as a major factor in the decimation of the remaining koala population.

Masters appeal set to cost From page 1 Cr Wellington said Noosa Council determined in January this year to uphold the previous decisions by the Sunshine Coast Council and thus continued to defend the appeal.

“As a councillor on the Sunshine Coast Council, I moved the motion to refuse the Masters development at Noosaville,” he said.

“As the public record shows, the motion was carried by nine votes to four.”

Cr Wellington said his reasons for refusing the development were in part on the grounds that he believed a Masters Home Improvement store would impact adversely on existing small businesses and ultimately on the local economy.

“Aspects of the development were also contrary to the planning scheme,” he said.

Mr Wellington has also pointed out the serious ramifications for local government and were “arguable weighted in of developers”.

“The recent decision to award costs against Noosa Council has some very serious ramifications for local governments across Queensland,” he said.

“For a start we are now seeing the repercussions of this State Government’s Sustainable Planning and Other Legislation Amendment Act 2012 (SPOLA).

“Contrary to historic example, this legislation directed the Planning and Environment Court to consider awarding court costs to the successful party.

“Previously the Planning and Environment Court had been a largely cost free jurisdiction - that is, parties

Noosa councillor Tony Wellington says the future of council appealing development applications in the Planning and Environment Court is swaying towards developers.

Masters Home Improvement applicant Hydrox Nominees Pty Ltd is seeking court costs from Noosa Council through the Planning and Environment Court. had met their own costs.

“It was extremely rare for costs to be made and then only in vexatious or frivolous cases.”

“The SPOLA changes introduced by the Newman Government were arguably weighted in favour of developers because they serve to inhibit councils from defending their decisions.

“Perhaps more importantly, they also inhibit community groups and individuals from becoming correspondents, with the obvious threat of having costs awarded against them.”

Cr Wellington said in the case of Masters at Noosaville, a percentage of the costs had been awarded against Noosa Council.

“In part that determination is based on the fact that the Sunshine

Coast Council decision to refuse the application was contrary to the original staff recommendation to approve it. If allowed, this is a very worrying precedent,” he said.

“In future, councils that make a decision that is in conflict with a staff recommendation – and that is far from uncommon – will face the very real prospect of having legal costs awarded against them in any subsequent appeal.

“The obvious solution, which is both unfortunate and absurd, is to have their planning staff not make any recommendation.

“In other words, the staff’s expert report would not make a reference to either approve or refuse the application, and the elected councillors would have to interpret or surmise what the staff’s intent may be.

“It is also worth noting that the judge determined that neither council nor its lawyers acted improperly in deciding to proceed to a hearing and that the issues litigated were ‘bona fide matters of town planning relevance and public interest’.

“Noosa Council is currently considering its prospects of appealing the decision,” he said.

“I have however, also had regard to the other matters to which I have referred to, particularly the appellant’s success, the strength of its case and the corresponding weakness of the council’s case and the circumstance that that was readily apparent in the context of the advices and warnings the council received, not just when the development application was refused contrary to advice, but including at the time it chose not to accept a settlement proposal recommended by its own representative at the mediation (at a time when, had the proposal been accepted, it would have been protected from an adverse costs order) and at all material times thereafter,” Judge Rackemann said in handing down his final ruling.

Help spread the cheer

By JOLENE OGLE CHRISTMAS is just seven weeks away and the shops are already full of festive treats and decorations, gifts are being bought and menus planned for the big day.

Christmas is usually a time for families and friends to come together and celebrate, but it’s not a time of joy for everyone.

Local charities are often overwhelmed with requests for help throughout the festive season as more and more locals struggle to keep up with rising bills, the cost of living or simply face a festive season of loneliness.

Noosa Today, together with United Synergies and the Salvation Army, are bringing a bit of Christmas cheer to Noosa with our annual Christmas Cheer campaign.

Local charities, such as the Salvation Army, help many people in need over the Christmas period, from people sleeping rough to families struggling to put a meal on the table each night of the week.

Through the Noosa Today Christmas Cheer Campaign we are appealing to our readers to help make Christmas a little brighter for local families by donating long-life foods and Christmas treats and toys.

Salvation Army Noosa’s Lieutenant David Sutcliffe said locals can help make a difference this Christmas.

“The kind generosity of local residents in Noosa giving long-life food and Christmas treats is helping bring some Christmas Cheer to those who would otherwise go without,” he said.

FEDERAL State School students were excited with the introduction of re-usable BioCups for the school’s tuckshop.

The BioCups was just a small step in the school’s committment to supporting the environment as well as promoting the health and well-being of students.

The school’s investment in BioCups will help reduce waste while at the same time allow students to have freshly prepared healthy drinks.

“Our tuckshop has introduced a whole food philosophy and provides students with healthy food options including fruit smoothies, homemade popsicles and

fun kid-friendly salads every week,” Bronwyn RolstoneWood, the school’s administration officer, said: “So far this term students have enjoyed chop chop noodle, rainbow and mean bean pasta salads.

“The new healthy options are very affordable and have been a huge success.”

Federal State School is located 10 minutes north of Cooroy and has a total of 93 students.

INJURED animals will be more comfortable now thanks to the Noosa Arts and Craft Group, which donated more than 60 hand-knitted pouches to Wilvos last week.

Club secretary Carole Castle suggested the knitting drive as a way to help the animal rescue group Wilvos, which is operated purely by volunteers.

Ms Castle said she got the idea to knit the pouches after seeing a similar initiative on TV. “Being a craft centre, a lot of us knit,� she said. “I thought there must a local (animal rescue group) we could help. “We’ve been knitting since April and every morning we would come in and ask ‘how many did you knit last night’.�

Ms Castle said she was hesitant at first, not expecting a big response to her bid for animal pouches.

But with a total of 61 pouches and 189 inner-pouches created by members, she said she was “very pleased with how it turned out�.

Wilvos community awareness officer Roslyn Leslie said the arrival of the pouches was perfectly timed with the peak animal rescue season.

Ms Leslie said she didn’t believe the animals would mind at all, so long as they’re happy and warm.

Ms Leslie said Wilvos was always looking for new volunteers to join the animal rescue teams, with a number of different positions and jobs available.

Write off to the tree loppers who dumped palm trees in the park in Orient Drive, Sunrise Beach. It’s not hard to see they were so-called "professionals" because of the spike markings that climbers leave on the trunk pieces. Do the right thing and go and remove them, whoever you are.

Write off to those smokers who keep throwing their cigarette butts on the ground. I’m certain this is an offence and I think police need to make an example of you.

WHO else, like me, is tired of seeing the evidence of burnouts and other ‘hooning’ activities all over local roads? Perhaps some of these ‘mental giants’ could benefit by becoming involved in organised motorsport where any real talent could be fostered and they might (I stress the word might) even learn something. At least the risks they pose to the rest of us might disappear.

I am sure it will be in favour of a boundary change for the EDV area. So better over and done with. Part of the reason we left our lovely Adelaide Hills community was because of our council becoming like Sunshine Coast Council.

IF THE EDV’s collusion with Noosa Council results in an amalgamation with Noosa Shire, it will be a very sad day for those residents of Eumundi and Doonan who will lose the benefit of a large, well-funded, effective council, and who will find themselves under the umbrella of the presently disorganised Noosa Council. Will our address change? Will our lifestyle change?

Will our cost of living improve? And most importantly, will we be welcome? The answer to all these questions is a definite no.

Long, hard fight THE State Government allowed Noosa residents to be polled as to whether they were in favour of de-amalgamation, as various groups of Noosa residents fought long and hard for this to happen.

The residents of Eumundi, Verrierdale and Doonan, located inside the state seat of Noosa, deserve the same consideration. Eighty per cent of the residents of this district, who were polled by EDV, want to join the Noosa Shire. The advantages to these residents are, closer proximity to council chambers for any ratepayer business that they may wish to do; and lower council rates than those of the SCC. Likewise, the issues that EDV residents may actively work to resolve are those related to the Noosa region.

For the State Government it is far less messy to have the Noosa Shire more in line with the state seat of Noosa, again for the resolution of local issues.

The vocal minority who favour retaining the status quo are criticising the EDV for having connections to various Noosa groups. Surely this is another good reason for EDV to join Noosa Shire. The active, hard-working people of the EDV group would be an asset to our shire, as their strong network connections and diligence would help to strengthen our shire further.

The State Government, whose local member was elected on the promise of de-amalgamation, made the process hard going. The Minister actively worked against de-amalgamation by his mailed out scare tactics. He is now blocking the further wishes of a significant majority of local residents, while our local member has

Ms Gregory said she loved to take wildlife photos across the Noosa region and often encountered kookaburras.

"The Kookaburra is a beautiful native bird and it’s no wonder he’s called the 'king of the bush’," she said.

Kookaburras (genus Dacelo) are terrestrial tree kingfishers native to Australia and New Guinea, which grow to between 2842cm in length.

It’s a travesty THE process by which we in Eumundi, Doonan, Verrierdale and Weyba Downs will decide whether we wish our districts to leave the Sunshine Coast Regional Council and join Noosa Shire continues to move forward. Noosa Council is to be commended for its even-handed approach on the issue of a boundary realignment, resolving that it would welcome us in the event of such a change. We are in the Noosa hinterland, and we deserve a say in the affairs of the Noosa region.

The behaviour of Sunshine Coast mayor Mark Jamieson, in agreeing to receive a submission from the EDV residents group on a realignment and then promptly ramming through a council resolution opposing change, was a travesty of the democratic process. Was that supposed to end the matter in imperial fashion, Mayor Jamieson? If so, why are you wasting ratepayers’ money on newspaper ads to try to woo back the districts whose opinions you obviously hold in contempt?

Polls on this issue indicate overwhelming support for a boundary realignment. I look forward to the appointment of a boundary commissioner to establish definitively the wishes of the communities. As someone who lives fractionally outside the Noosa boundary, I would welcome a realignment: the arguments in favour are compelling.

Regrettably, Mr Dom Massoni of the group (how big is it?) calling itself the Sunshine Coast Alliance continues to scatter red herrings and insults in his desperate efforts to thwart the will of the majority on this matter. One might have hoped that his egregious libel of the professional company which carried out the recent survey would have discouraged him, but it seems not.

After the welcome declaration by the Local Government Minister, David Crisafulli, that he has not ruled out a boundary change (because EDV has made no submission yet), Mr Massoni’s assertion that “the referee has blown the whistle” looks simply foolish and misleading.

Mr Massoni also seems to have a bee in his bonnet about supposed connections between EDV leaders and groups in Noosa. Of course people in the EDV area have connections with Noosa, Mr Massoni, that’s just one reason why a realignment makes sense! Fortunately for the rest of us, democracy doesn’t mean that those who bluster the loudest get their way.

Smart recyclers give a toss NEW research from Planet Ark has found more than half of Australians don’t know what can or can’t be recycled in kerbside bins.

The statistics come as Planet Ark’s National Recycling Week kicks off on 10 November.

National Recycling Week highlights the environmental benefits of re-use and recycling programs, while educating the community on how to recycle.

Understanding which items can be recycled at the kerbside is the first step in starting successful recycling habits.

According to the research, released as The Seven Secrets of Successful Recyclers, only 34 per cent of Australians know empty aerosol cans are recyclable.

Planet Ark’s head of campaigns Brad Gray said it was surprising so many people didn’t know aerosol cans could be recycled.

“In fact, they are made from fully recyclable steel or aluminium,” he said.

“Even though many people use aerosols every day for products like deodorants they still hold on to old ideas. The research shows people report having been told to keep aerosol cans out of the recycling, which is a hangover from the

agent has advised that the tenants would like a new air conditioner before they re-sign a new lease… they will leave if we don’t put one in? I feel like I am being pressured to spend money…what are your thoughts? Deidre M, Brisbane Hello Deidre, It is common for tenants to make a request especially at lease renewal time, the reality is that they probably will leave if you put the rent up and don’t supply an air conditioner. The other issue is probably new tenants will also have the same request. If the existing tenants are paying market rent then it may be advantageous to increase the rent a little and also put an air con in because If they do decide to leave there is a possibility of the property remaining vacant and a relet fee from your agent, so quite quickly you could see expenses run up to the cost of an air conditioner! So my advice would be to install the air con as it is also a tax deduction! So if they are good tenants keep them in place and at the same time add value to your property!

Karen, what do you think about letting my tenant use my ride on mower to mow the lawns at the acreage property? James F, Eumundi James I would be very concerned about letting the tenant have use of equipment at the property, this should really be a matter for your insurance company, and I would have the conversation with them and just ind out what is the liability if he should be injured whilst using the mower?

Sunshine Coast a ‘standout’ THE Sunshine Coast is a “standout performer”, according to the Master Builders’ latest survey results.

The Survey of Industry Conditions regional snapshots for the September 2014 quarter has revealed the Sunshine Coast, along with the Gold Coast, is leading the way in industry recovery.

Master Builders’ deputy executive director Paul Bidwell said while the reality of the end of the resources boom continued to be felt for many regions, it is reassuring that confidence appeared to be levelling at a relatively high point.

“For the most part, the trends of the

previous quarter continued in September,” Mr Bidwell said.

“Although the south east corner continues to lead the way, with the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast regions being the standout performers.”

Mr Bidwell said the key constraints across most regions included the level of demand, planning approval processes and infrastructure charges.

“Labour cost is an area of concern in regions with a less flexible labour market, dominated by the resources sector,” he said.

“There are signs, however, that the labour

market is already beginning to respond to the downturn, moving to the new growth areas such as the Sunshine Coast.

“Despite the challenges, there is a positive outlook for the future across much of the state.”

The survey also found the Sunshine Coast trading conditions for both residential and commercial building remained well within positive territory, despite losing some of the gain made in the previous quarter.

However, the lacklustre level of demand remained the most critical constraint on business growth for the Sunshine Coast, according to the survey results.

Writers put a twist in the tale EACH year the Noosa Writers Group launches a collection of short stories, but this year, the group has created a unique novel with a special twist.

Frozen in Time has been written by all members of the group and will showcase the group’s varied writing skills, and is the sixth book launched by the Noosa Writer’s Group.

Fishy result THANKYOU for the opportunity to express my opinion on banning netting on the North Shore. I have been fishing in this area since I was a child, a long time ago, and my father used to take me fishing here.

I have sadly watched the decline in fish numbers on the North Shore, and have seen first-hand and the carnage the netters wreak on fish populations. It has become so bad that I have not fished the North Shore for many years now.

We can only hope that council does ban the netting and I hope the fish stocks do rebound - that we have not yet reached a point of no return.

While council is at it, I think that they should also ban netting in the river - it used to be a breeding ground and nursery for a variety of fish species, but this is no longer the case. Continual raking of the river bed by beam trawlers has removed the natural seagrass vital to fish species. This damage is in addition to the large percentage of by-catch of small fish that has decimated the fish population in the river.

If we could give both the North Shore and the river a reprieve from commercial fishing pressure, it is not only an environmentally sound thing to do, it would make a big difference to the economy, too. Recreational anglers would return once the fishing improves, providing a boost to the local economy. One that has dropped off in recent years due to the lack of good fishing.

Nothing new DON’T ever believe for one moment that the realignment of boundaries to bring in Eumundi and Verrierdale into Noosa Shire is a new idea.

Far from it. Thirty years ago, the local community Doonan, Verrierdale and Eumundi residents were discussing and proposing the very same plan - only because it made sense. It

didn’t happen at the time because the residents were too busy just enjoying life - as we did.

All this talk about various motivations of those directly involved and the occasional posturing but taking into account those with their own personal reasons it should not happen and although not a present resident of the hinterland, to bring these regions into the Noosa Shire just makes good, common sense.

The plan for realignment appears demographically correct and it should be a satisfactory result for all parties. We cannot find a reason for it not to happen.

I would consider that Johanne Wright (with whom I have never met or spoken) simply speaks for the majority.

Courageous move CONGRATULATIONS to the Noosa Council for making a courageous move.

How long has it been that “long time” fishermen like Trevor Cleary have been pillaging as many mullet off Noosa North Shore as they possibly can with no regard for other fishermen and the overall food chain? How many people are actually employed in Noosa processing mullet? 70 per cent of their incomes affected?

All very flaky, biased opinion.

The facts are one kilo of mullet is worth about $10 to a commercial net fisherman so he can pay wages, fuel, maintenance etc. For recreation fishers we spend $200 per kg (1994 Victorian Government report).So perhaps $400 per kilogram in 2014! Say that quietly to the other significant boat shareholder! For a kilogram of fish recreationals pay four times more in GST than North Shore netters get in income.

Level the playing field here ... commercials can use a single hook and line, the same as recreation fishers. All fishos are equal then.

How many families would there be visiting

Noosa to go fishing (and spending) if children could reasonable expect to catch something meaningful? How often would those children pester their parents to return to Noosa?

Incidentally when fish are under stress ... like a net squeezing the life out of them ... they make noises that warn their mates to stay away, other species also pick up on this and clear out very quickly, often to never come back. They know the area is a death zone! I wonder why very few Spanish Mackerel (and other species) are ever caught off the north shore beach anymore.

Maybe a long-time commercial fisherman cut their food chain!

Time to talk ARE your readers aware that the environmental impact statement for the proposed Sunshine Coast Airport upgrade calls for public submissions to be made by 13 November?

Further, your readers may not be aware that the proposed east west runway would see three new flight paths cross the Noosa Shire. International and domestic jet services would cross Noosa north shore and the at lower altitudes the hinterland and smaller jets and general aviation would cross the Marcus and Castaways beach areas then Lake Weyba.

The EIS itself details the difficulties in being precise about flight paths and their noise

impacts. Interestingly Sunshine Coast Regional Council notes that one benefit would be a reduction in noise complaints from Buderim and Maroochydore residents; neither area is however directly under the current airports flight paths.

The current flight paths largely cross the ocean and there is an option to upgrade the current runway without new areas being impacted by the airport’s operation. If there is a demand for tourist international flights beyond the capacity of this upgrade the soon to be expanded Brisbane airport might be better utilised.

Ban backed I WOULD like to commend the council for their support of banning netting on the north shore. Further I urge them to support banning all commercial fishing in the Noosa area, especially in inshore waters and rivers and lakes Fish stocks are limited and this is necessary to ensure we have fish or future generations and to encourage controlled recreational fishing as a past time and generator of sustainable income from this resource.

Merger concern I AM writing to express my concern at the proposed council merging of Doonan from the Sunshine Coast Council to Noosa Council. As a ratepayer of Doonan, I am totally opposed to the merger, and feel that a vote should be available to voice the opinion of the ratepayers in the area.

ACTION thriller John Wick starring Keanu Reeves is making waves in the action genre and is currently screening at BCC Noosa Cinemas.

John Wick was a successful mob hit man who after falling in love with a woman quit his life of organised crime.

Five years later, his wife dies but to make sure Wick’s not alone she arranged for a dog to be brought to him after her death.

One day some unsavoury characters break into Wick’s home with a view to stealing his car, so they beat him up and they kill his new dog.

The experience sends Wick into a silent rage and he resurfaces his past in a bid to track down those responsible and like most hit man films “make them pay”.

Wick learns the leader is the son of his former employer, Viggo.

Viggo then sends some goons to take care of Wick but he’s too good. He then sets out to find Viggo’s son while Viggo puts a price on Wick’s head.

Although somewhat predictable in its plot, Wick is a sleek production with heavy emphasis on the action scenes.

Fans of the mobster hit man films are sure to enjoy this one as Hollywood continues to churn out similar titles such as The Equalizer and The November Man. John Wick has received 8/10 on IMDB and 85 per cent out of 100 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes.

This club, from North County, San Diego, hasn’t been around very long, but its members have already posted some incredible results in international bodysurf competition, including 12 finalists in last August’s World Bodysurfing Championships in Oceanside, California. Senior club member Dr Chris Lafferty, who will compete at the Noosa Festival, won his second consecutive age division (55-64) world title at Oceanside, defeating multiple world champion Mark Cunningham of Hawaii, who was patron of the inaugural Noosa womp comp last March.

Sunday morning coming down AN AMERICAN publication recently asked me to recall the best surfing I had ever witnessed, as opposed to seeing on TV or a surf movie.

It was a tough ask, because I’ve been privileged to see many of the greats of our sport in action over half a century, from Bobby Brown to Kelly Slater and beyond.

But I kept coming back to a rather unlikely morning in the north of England with the Sunshine Coast’s most famous (and well-loved) surfing boofhead. This is part of what I wrote: Gary “Kong” Elkerton and I were on our way to a Quiksilver promotion in Cornwall, but we flew into London’s Stansted Airport a couple of days early, rented a car and drove north, not west.

We were both on somewhat sketchy ground at the time, me as marketing boss, him as a leading team rider, as the new French management at Quiksilver Europe didn’t seem too much like our irreverent Aussie style.

Very few people in the company knew where we were, but we were in fact on a very important mission.

Multiple UK champion and big wave charger Gabe Davies was about to marry his sweetheart Lauren, and his bucks’ party was being held that night in his home village near Newcastle-upon-Tyne in Yorkshire.

On arrival, Kong and I checked into a hotel and made straight for a bar on the town’s

cobble-stoned main square, where we were soon knocking back pints of beer with many of Europe’s leading surfers.

By the wee hours, we were all running half-naked around that same square, chasing a manacled Gabe to perform all sorts of nowforgotten tortures on him.

So it was a good night but not such a good morning, when veteran Cornwall surfer Joe Hargreaves came to pick us up for a surfing rendezvous on the reef at Staithes, the picturesque little North Sea port where James Cook was indentured as a shipwright before sailing off to claim Australia for the Brits.

I don’t think anyone really wanted to surf, but hey, we were surfers and there was swell.

Kong sparked up big-time when we parked in the port and looked out over a pretty overhead line-up with only a few surfers in the water, despite the advanced hour.

The water was dirty and cold, but Kong seemed not to notice as he streaked past our more sedate paddling, wearing just a wetsuit vest and trunks, befitting his super jock selfimage of the time.

We were still paddling when he swung around and streaked into a steep left, pulled hard off the bottom and took the full weight of the oncoming section on his large and almostsquare head.

As he surfaced, a torrent of abuse echoed off the cliffs behind the historic port.

We were all having a shocker, but midway through the session, Kong picked up a smaller reef runner deep inside and milked it down the line.

It was a game-changer and he started picking off set waves at will. No one was going to argue. As every journeyman surfer knows, the next best thing to miraculously pulling off such a manoeuvre yourself, is to be in the moment when a true power surfer turns with full force and showers you with spray.

Kong smashed the lip harder with every wave, and several times I could have reached out and high-fived him.

Perhaps it was just the up-close and personal perspective, but I was there when Kong won all three of his world Masters titles, and I never saw him surf better than he did that hung-over Sunday morning in Yorkshire, England.

By JOLENE OGLE MORE than 50 horticultural enthusiasts met for the monthly Slow Food Noosa presentation last Thursday at Outrigger Resort, where gardening expert and horticulture therapist Cath Manuel shared her wisdom on how to learn, grow and thrive.

Ms Manuel had valuable advice and deliciious recipe ideas for the group for creating and living off a sustainable, organic home garden.

Throughout the morning, Ms Manuel shared tips and

tricks for getting the most out of your soil, fruit trees, vegetables and herbs, with plenty of questions answered throughout the day.

As well as helping local people create organic home gardens, Ms Manuel also helped establish the Noosa Community Garden and also runs a horticulture therapy program at Carramar NoosaCare Dementia Centre.

The morning was hosted by the Slow Food Noosa movement, a group dedicated to good food grown organically and locally.

The Slow Food Noosa breakfasts and presentations are held on the last Thursday of every month.The next event is 27 November and guest speakers will be Chef Matt Golinsky, Trevor Hart of Cedar Street Cheeserie and Sally Hookey of Hinterland Feijoas, who have recently returned from Italyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest food and wine fair, Terra Madre.

Slow Food Noosa breakfasts are held at Outrigger Resort, Little Hastings Street, Noosa, from 7.45am. Members are $24 per person and non-members are $29, with a full buffet breakfast included.

Event-goers are encouraged to do their bit for the environment by generating enough energy to produce their own thirst-quenching beverage.

Noosa Junction Association Inc president Carole Tretheway said keeping the day affordable for locals was a priority and food tickets would be on sale from the booth and roving ticket sellers from just $3, with the average food and drink prices around $6.

“It’s a day to celebrate the ecclectic food and beverage offer of the Junction. With so many established and new eateries here now, we’re reminding locals of the quality and variety they have right on their doorstep,” Carole said.

There will also be a free entertainment program catering for all ages, and families can bring a rug, sit back and enjoy the live music.

A highlight of the festival will be the return of the waiters’ race being organised by Ruby from Ipazzi Ristorante.

Talented waiters will test their skills against an obstacle course, attempting to deliver drinks to their customers without spilling a drop.

The Junction Flava Food and Wine Street Festival is on Saturday, 15 November, from 11am to 5pm at Arcadia Street, Noosa Junction.

Bottom of the rung team Cormorants had the top team JeLS fighting for their leader’s position only going down in the last two ends. Other top teams to face close games were 101s who drew with High Rollers and Royal Flush (who had replacement players) defeated TAG Team with the last bowl of the evening. Rob and Co also had a win over BAM. Kybong Kids, Eumundi Boys and Bushrangers also had wins.

The Business Bowlers had a good evening on Wednesday with CSR, Mutineers, SEC, Jacobson, Pages, Bonnells and Thunderbirds winning their games.

The very hot conditions on Tuesday didn’t deter many people.

Winners Russell Butler and Kerry Knowles had an overall win of +16 points, one point more than Terence Charles, Roger Linklater and Julie Ainscough.

There will be no bowls this Tuesday due to Melbourne Cup. We will be all enjoying our lunch and having fun in the Hub.

River a refuge for anglers

By JACK MANGROVE WITH the wind being the way it is, the river has been a lifesaver for frustrated offshore anglers.

Up river has seen some great action with the area between the lakes the main focus of anglers.

With mangrove jack and threadfin salmon on the chew, anglers have been well rewarded for an early start. The area around Johns Landing has also been very productive with nice jacks tending to hang on the rock ledges and

drop offs in the area. They have been enjoying a range of diving lures that have been tugged past their noses as angler troll in the area. Live bait has also been a favourite and has also been enjoyed by large flathead around the Tewantin ski run.

The stretch of river along Gympie terrace has been great for whiting, this is a great place to teach the kids to fish and the happy smiles that you get when the kids catch, make all that baiting and casting worthwhile. Down

toward the mouth has again seen a great deal of activity, this has to be one of the best land based spots on the coast.

Trevally have been thick, chasing the bait that comes in on the tide, jew and tailor have also been smashing the schools of bait fish.

Fast moving lures are your best bet here, they imitate a fleeing baitfish with the bite is usually quite dramatic.

Offshore the wind has still been a major factor, with only the larger charter vessels tending to get out.

A trip to the Barwon Banks saw some great results, large jew, cod and knobby snapper where all subdued by angler on that trip. On another trip headed to Chardon’s Reef there were some nice amberjack, tuskies and sweetlip on the menu.

Noosa’s North Shore has again been a little wind affected but the early-morning anglers have seen some nice tailor, dart and whiting.

NOOSA HEADS LAST Thursday’s Laguna mixed medley proved to be a great day with competitive matches across the various formats. At the end of the day the top points score was recorded by the Greg Dale four from Coolum. Next came the Ian Sanday team, followed by Greg Reed from Club Maroochy, and Bob King.

In night pennant, our ladies' pair scored Noosa’s only point in the meeting with Kawana last Wednesday.

This week we travel to Coolum Beach. The final of the club open singles championship was played on Saturday morning with Mel Hobbins taking the title, scoring a straight sets win over Paul Rieck.

T-ballers show the way

By RICHARD MURRIHY IT WAS another good start to the day at Noosa Softball with the Tballers showing the way.

Charli and Daniel showed how much they have improved already this year.

The 15s were the early ones as usual and Jasmine Murray stood out with a great three bagger, Maddie and Will filled in for Dodgers (thanks) in what was a good game against Slamcats.

There were fly catches aplenty Leigh Ryan had it on a string with four while in the 13s Ashton, Jasmine, Shae and Jack took one each while Harry picked up one in the 15s.

Not to be outdone, three batters scored home runs with them being Lewis S. (u17), Jed M. and Ethan Lewis both in the 13s. So after another morning in the sun the results were: Under 13 Redsox Red 10 d Wildcats 5; Redsox Red 13 d

Slammers 3; Redsox Blue d Dodgers 7.

Under 17 Dodgers W 15 d Redsox 4; Under 15 Dodgers 13 d Slamcats 6; Redsox Blue 12 d Dodgers 7.

After this the seniors played with Slammers beating Redsox 15-9 and Dodgers beating Team 7 10-3. Michelle, Sandy, Ken, Nicole, Waz, Dave, Aden, Belinda, Leanne (2), Wiley, Louise, Greg, Dave (2) and Ryan all took catches.

We tell the kids to keep the ball down, maybe the seniors should.

Stan, Vic and Ryan all smacked home runs in another enjoyable afternoon had by all.

We must mention Shannon should have accepted the umpire’s call and taken the walk-oops, two balls later K2 struck out. Don’t forget if you would like to play, juniors start at 8.30am and seniors start at 1pm on Saturdays.

Larissa wants to be a Matilda

By JOLENE OGLE AT JUST 18 years old, Larissa Crummer of Tewantin already has an impressive resume both on and off the soccer pitch.

The soccer player is currently representing Australia as part of the Young Matilda squad in the pre-qualifying round of the AFC Under 19 Women’s Championships in Vietnam.

Larissa said she started playing soccer when she was five and had never stopped, scoring her first major contract playing for Sydney in the W-League when she was just 16 years old.

Larissa’s mum, Vicki, said it was tough sending her young daughter to play in Sydney.

“It was really hard. She stayed with a family we didn’t know,” she said.

“We drove her down there and to leave her with someone we didn’t know was horrible ... but it was worse for me than her.”

For Larissa, it was the start of a very promising career in the football league.

Larissa now plays for the Young Matildas and W-League, and she hopes to be selected for the Matildas team to represent Australia.

But off the soccer pitch, Larissa likes to get her hands dirty as an apprentice plumber alongside her dad, Les. “I had been working for him just every now and then. Then Mum brought up the idea about going to TAFE and actually doing it,” she said.

The apprenticeship works in with Larissa’s training schedule that sees her travel to Brisbane every afternoon to train, but she said she would have to put her study on hold if she was selected for the Matildas team.

Larissa said it would be a while to wait before the selection of the Matildas, but she’s working hard to be ready for selection.

Squads take shape on a new path

By JOE JURISEVIC IN 2015, the Queensland Rugby Union will launch a new pathway for junior rugby players.

Under-15 and under-17 teams will be selected to play NSW from the Queensland regions competing in the ARU’s Junior Gold Cup. The players representing Queensland will be selected from

the 10 Junior Gold Cup Centres based around the state.

Following trials completed last weekend, the ARU’s Junior Gold Cup Centre on the Sunshine Coast is pleased to announce the under-17 and under-15 training squads for the upcoming 2015 National JGC competition.

The squads will commence their pre-season training this Wednesday, 5 November at Sunshine Coast Stadium number 7,

from 6pm. Competition for final places will be tough with squads of 36 players training up until Christmas and through January, when the playing squads of 25 players will be selected for the National Junior Gold Cup competition in February and March.

Noosa is well represented in both age groups with seven players selected in the under-17 squad, and nine in the under-15s.

Right man for the job in top league THE Noosa and Gympie Rugby League clubs have a new premier league coach for the 2015 season.

Anthony Zipf was chosen by a panel, as the right man for the job, who can take the clubs to new heights in the coming season and beyond.

Anthony comes to the combined clubs with a vision of growing last year’s core group of

players as well as developing new youth players coming up through the ranks.

The new coach comes with experience, having played in the Brisbane Broncos program for three years, the North’s Devils for two years and three A-Grade premierships with the Noosa Pirates.

Noosa and Gympie have once again joined forces in the newly

named Premier League in 2015 as a pathway to one day stand alone as their own respective clubs.

The team next year will have a uniformed name and will play in a jersey that represents both clubs colours and logos.

Part of the planning for the pathway to stand alone has begun with both clubs to field their own Division 2 sides next season un-

der the new competition structure of the Sunshine Coast Gympie Rugby League. Gympie will field a side in the SCGRL U18’s competition with Noosa entering the new U17/18 SCJRL Youth Cup. The Division 2 sides, Gympie U18s and Noosa’s Youth Cup side will play in their respective club’s colour.

Ring to break the codes

By JOLENE OGLE THE Noosa Contender of the Codes is back for another year, with local sporting clubs strapping on the boxing gloves to help fund-raise for charity.

Now in its third year, the Contender of the Codes brings together willing representatives from six lo-

cal sporting teams to battle it out in the ring.

All codes take part, including Noosa’s Tigers AFL, Dolphins rugby league, and Lions soccer, plus the Pomona Demons AFL and Tewantin Noosa Thunder cricket club.

All 11 competitors are busy training under the watchful eye of local celebrity boxer Israel Kani, at his gym the Noosa Box Office.

The boxing match is on this Saturday 8 November, from 6.30pm at the Noosa Box Office, 25 Project Ave, Noosaville, with the event expected to be a sell-out.

Tickets are $30 on the door, with all proceeds from the event going to local organisation Sunshine Butterflies.

LAST week for our lifesavers was indeed very busy. Apart from their normal obligations both Sunshine and Noosa once again supplied water safety officers for the annual Run Swim Run, Eyeliner Swim and the Noosa Triathlon.

Wednesday saw rescue board and IRB patrols covering the Run Swim Run. Friday was the Eyeliner Swim, the biggest water event of the week and this required some 20 board, three IRB and ski patrols. Sunday again saw board and IRB patrols on duty for the triathlon. Happy to say all went well.

Noosa IRB captain Chris Grandemange said: “This week is the biggest week on our calendar for water safety patrols. Happy to say there was no major problems.

“Apart from Sunshine Beach and us, Coolum and Mudjimba also sent patrol members to help, so it really was community effort from all our clubs. These events give us the opportunity to really be involved and say thanks to the community for their support through the years.”

With the Noosa Tri Week and the national award winning Seahorse Nippers just completed, it is shaping up to be one of the most community involved seasons on record for our local lifesavers.

Jet Rescue Boat 3, the high powered rescue vessel that is primarily designed for rescue work in cyclonic conditions will soon be back in the water after a major overhaul and repaint.

This craft, which weighs in at approximately 2.5 ton and has a top speed of some 35 knots, has a roving patrol area of Teerwah to Coolum. To give some indication as to the type of rescue work these crews can be called on to perform, at last years National Awards Night in Sydney, a black tie event, the majority of brav-

ery awards went to the crewies belonging to the Jet Rescue Boat Service.

Definitely not a job for the faint-hearted.

Co-ordinator for Teewah Coolum area Chris Doney said, “At present we have 15 patrol members for our region. This number covers crewies, drivers and skippers and these consist of both male and female. The top position is skipper.

“To hold this position usually requires some 200 hours of training, so as you can see our people are really dedicated.

“They come from clubs from anywhere between Redcliffe and Noosa and we often find some are also patrol captains back on their home beach. Highly qualified people looking for more advanced training and experience.”

As our water safety patrols were performing their duties our competitors were also showing their colors at the Coolangatta Gold on the Gold Coast.

“Despite only sending a small team from Noosa I was more than happy with our results,’’

said Noosa’s head coach Darren Mercer.

“On Saturday our juniors competed in the short course events.

“In the ladies’ U/19 Alex Nolan finished second and for the veterans Julie Stanton was third in the 40/49 age group. In the men’s division veteran Rob Harney finished second in the U/50 short course. A small team but all went well.”

Despite being only 16 years of age, Sunshine’s Tom Wilson contested the U/19 event and finished in the top 10.

“This was my first Gold ... great experience. Now I have learnt how to pace myself, I am really looking forward to next year,” Tom said.

This weekend the Noosa boat crews will contend the first round of the Navie Series at Surfers Paradise and towards the end of the month Jordan Mercer will contest the first round of this seasons Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Iron Man Series at Smiths Beach, Western Australia. We wish them well.
