“Overall, I would have liked to have seen more of the Yarra Ranges protected, but it’s great to have those parts of the southern Dandenongs protected.�

The matter had been the subject of extensive community consultation in recent months, with a special meeting held by the council on 30 September for public submissions and a mail-out to 12,400 properties informing them of the proposed change.

Around 2500 submissions - including survey responses - were received on the matter.

IT WAS a last-minute amendment that saved areas in the hills from new subdivision rules at last week’s Yarra Ranges Council meeting.

But some residents have voiced concern for areas that will be opened up under the changes, and said that important vegetation might get the chop.

At their 28 October meeting, councillors discussed a proposal to lower the minimum lot size for subdivision in Low Density Residential Zones (LDRZ) from 4000 square metres around an acre - to 2000 square metres.

Councillor Samantha Dunn immediately put forward an amendment at the meeting, which meant that the areas of Belgrave, Belgrave South, Belgrave Heights, Tecoma, Upwey, Selby and Upper Ferntree Gully would be exempt from the change.

Cr Dunn said that, following extensive community consultation, the majority of submitters from her area did not want to see more subdivision. “The clear message in the Dandenong Ranges is that they don’t support subdivisions in their postcodes,� she said.

The proposal, with Cr Dunn’s amendment and another allowing subdivision in the Bushfire Management Overlay-covered Warburton, passed with unanimous support.

Mount Evelyn Environment Protection and Progress Association (MEEPPA) president, Tim Heenan, said he was concerned that some vegetation on larger blocks of land would be cleared to make way for subdivisions. “I believe that everybody has a right to be able to subdivide their blocks if they’ve got the planning authority, but I worry about the flora and fauna,� he said.

Shire’s support for scarce species

By ANEEKA SIMONIS ENDANGERED native plants in the Emerald bushland have been put in the care of Cardinia Shire Council.

On Saturday 25 October, a conservation group handed over 2.1 hectares of land containing the endangered Emerald Star Bush which can only be found in two places across the globe.

Cardinia Shire Mayor Graeme Moore said he was grateful for the land donation which will now form part of the larger Emerald Quarry Reserve.

“The conservation of the Emerald Star Bush is extremely important and dependent on the support of the local community. The plant is found only in Emerald and Monbulk with only 3500 plants currently in this area,” Cr Moore said.

“To ensure the plant’s longterm survival, it is vital that we all keep up the good fight to save it.”

Trust for Nature gifted the land to council who will contribute $7,000 for the development of the new reserve, in addition to a $5,000 grant from TFN and a $9,000 contribution by a John Hills Landcare grant for weed control.

“Given our reserve is next door to council-owned bushland, we thought it would be best for them to take care of it,” Mr Cullen said.

The community joined with council and the protection group to celebrate the handover and took part in a tree planting ceremony.

“It was a great community

planting day ... . people got together to plant a few trees in the new reserve. It’s a good sign that people are interested in conservation,” Mr Cullen said.

WORKING seniors will now get more bang for their buck as part of an initiative rewarding oversixties who work more than 35 hours per week.

The seniors card, which offers older Australians residents a minimum 10 per cent discount on goods and services, is currently only awarded to people working under 35 hours per week.

Member for Gembrook Brad Battin said the Victorian Seniors Card program would be expanded next year to provide business discounts to hard-working seniors.

“As our population ages and people continue to enjoy longer and more active lives, many people over the age of 60 are continuing to remain in full-time employment, and the new Seniors Business Discount Card is a way of recognising this trend and extending some of the Seniors Card program benefits to this group of Victorians,” Mr Battin said.

Currently, more than 160,000 seniors who work more than 35 hours per week miss out on discounts offered by around 4000 businesses across the state.

The discount guarantee follows another Coalition Government announcement with energy retailer AGL which will offer discounted retail energy plans to Victorian Seniors Card Holders.

“The AGL Discount Energy Plan is just one of many business discounts that will be offered to holders of the new Seniors Business Discount Card when it is introduced,” Mr Battin said.

The new Seniors Business Discount Card is part of the Seniors Participation Action Plan 2014-’19 which aims to create age-friendly and supportive communities for seniors.

Can’t beat a good teacher

By JESSE GRAHAM THERE’S no substitute for good practice and a good teacher when it comes to learning how to drive, according to paramedic Jason Callanan.

Mr Callanan - who is also a Yarra Ranges councillor - said that drivers were statistically at the worst risk of a serious injury or death on the roads on their first day of their P-plates.

He said that preventing potential crashes came out of education about the road, different conditions and how to handle a car, and experiencing driving with a number of different people.

“A range of people gives you a different experience base,” Cr Callanan said.

“With different attitudes and different skills, the student can go ‘I didn’t like how my mum showed me, but my uncle showed me a different way’.

“Doing that, the kid is going to understand it better.”

Cr Callanan warned that completing the required 120 Learners Permit hours with only one driver could lead to young people picking up only their

teacher’s driving style and their bad habits with them.

“They might be adapting a bad attitude, or skill or habit that will be entrenched,” he said.

“Trying to get it (a bad habit) out of a young driver is very hard.”

Through alternating driving with family members, with instructors and in formal driving classes, Cr Callanan said that younger people would be more prepared to handle intense situations on their own when they received their licence.

“Get out there - do country roads, do freeways, do night-time driving and in the rain,” he said.

“The actual craft of driving is something that will take experience - but it’s about having that attitude, ensuring that they are aware of what’s around them.”

While learner drivers are often at lower risk of crashes compared to adult drivers, Cr Callanan said around 10-15 learner drivers died on Victorian roads each year.

He urged drivers-to-be to take part in programs such as the L2P Driver

Mentor Program, evasive driving courses, and for parents to ensure they taught their children how to drive - not just how to pass their driving test.

“You research what school to put your kid in and what kinder would be the best for your child - a lot of research should go into who you choose for your driving teacher,” Cr Callanan said.

He offered the following tips to young drivers: check your tyres and brakes often and ensure your car is roadworthy.

For parents teaching their kids how to drive, Cr Callanan’s advice was simple: be patient.

“Don’t expect them to learn everything at once - the best thing you can do is be comfortable and let them drive,” he said.

“Don’t try to take over and don’t grab the wheel.

“These kids are nervous enough as it is in a vehicle - they don’t need someone shouting at them and being nervous beside them.”

Cr Callanan said the most dangerous day for young drivers is their first time driving alone, and urged parents to give their kids a range of driving experiences and teachers. 130116

A 43-YEAR-OLD Monbulk man has been charged in relation to cultivating and possessing cannabis.

He was bailed to appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court at a later date.

During the ceremony, a plaque was unveiled commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Australian Special Air Service.

After joining the Junior Leaders Infantry Battalion of the Queen’s Own Highlanders and later the British SAS, Iain became associated with the Australian SAS when he moved here in 1988.

He has served in Borneo and Northern Ireland.

At 66 years old, Iain represented the average age among the group of ex-SAS soldiers, whose mission during the walk was twofold.

“Obviously the walk was very much about raising awareness.

“We stopped in small towns and spoke directly to locals about the cause of the Wandering Warriors.

“Overall, we aimed to raise funds for our charity partners that could then be used to help injured veterans.”

The Wandering Warriors are yet to receive a final figure on their fund-raising efforts, but Iain said the support of local communities was overwhelming.

“The generosity of the people we came across was amazing. People in those small country towns were so

willing to help.”

Regularly seen walking around the Mt Evelyn area, Iain has no intention of slowing down anytime soon.

He regularly pipes at private, RSL and ADF events and maintains a connection with the local community.

“I would definitely like to do the walk again. It’s a great event for an important cause.”

Yarra Ranges Council’s director of Environment and Engineering, Mark Varmalis, said officers had cancelled further consultation after an “uncomfortable” meeting, with a number of people allegedly intimidating the officers.

He said the decision to curtail future consultations was due to Occupational Health and Safety concerns, and that the feedback they sought had been received, but that it was not a personal decision of Mr Faull.

Mr Varmalis also said that he had recently been made aware of the possibility of push-polling by members of staff.

The online survey and official consultation period on the pool closed on 24 October.

The councillors told the gathered supporters that a decision on the pool would be made at its 11 November meeting, with a report being finalised last week.

AN elderly driver had the ride of her life in Olinda on Wednesday afternoon when she accidently pressed the accelerator rather than the break when parking her car.

Olinda Senior Constable Warren Pearce said the 75-year-old woman was parking her car along the Mount Dandenong Tourist Road when she had accidently accelerated.

“She’s then driven onto the other side of the road, over the embankment and into the car park where she has landed on the bonnet of a Holden Colorado,” Sen Const Pearce said.

“She’s then somehow wedged herself off and landed in the drive way off Fortnums Olinda.”

Sen Const Pearce said the driver was very lucky to walk away without serious injury herself or causing someone else to be injured or killed.

Alcohol was not a factor, but police are still investigating the matter.

Waves of support spread for pool A DECISION on the Olinda Pool’s future will be made at next week’s Yarra Ranges Council meeting, with supporters coming out in waves to back the pool.

At the 28 October Yarra Ranges Council meeting, a large group of supporters filled the public gallery of the Council Chambers, holding “Save the Olinda Pool” signs.

They attended in support of John Faull, Faith Everard and Sofia Mikulcic and Tim Moore, all of whom spoke to councillors about the pool in submissions from the public.

Faith, 16, with Sofia,10, said that, as a local teenager, she was “devastated” by the pool’s closure 12 months ago, which was due to extensive cracks and damage to the pool’s shell.

She spoke at length about the benefits the pool offers people in the Olinda area, and about the harms of not having the pool, with over an hour’s travel to the nearest pool in Monbulk - which is indoor and heated.

IT WAS a proud moment for Mount Evelyn’s Iain Townsley when he donned full uniform, played his bagpipes and marched with a group of fellow SAS veterans into the Australian War Memorial in Canberra last month.

Iain has just returned from the Wandering Warriors 2014 Mega Challenge, a walk from Brisbane to Canberra to raise money for the wounded, injured and ill of the ADF and their families.

The event finished with a ceremony in Canberra and was sponsored by the Defence Force, which provided a cook and medic as well as assisting in transporting baggage and walkers between destinations.

Iain and the walkers covered approximately 20 kilometres per day and stopped in towns along the way to entertain locals and raise extra funds.

Iain is a renowned local piper and his bagpipes became a favourite throughout the journey.

After three weeks of keeping a busy schedule walking and entertaining local crowds at night, Iain piped the veterans up the stairs of the War Memorial on Thursday, 16 October during a ceremony which was marked with a parachute jump by the Australian Army Parachute Display Team and attended by charity patron Corporal Ben RobertsSmith VC and AWM director Dr

Michelle Hardicre came to Australia from Northern England with husband Daniel and two dogs in 2005.

She was 14 weeks old with their ‘made in England, born in Australia’ son, Benjamin. Charlotte came three years later.

“We couldn’t afford a holiday, so we came to stay,” she said.

Cr Cliff joined his colleagues in welcoming Yarra Ranges newest citizens with Womenjika and a “G’day”.

THE Patch Primary School is leading the way in terms of creating a comfortable environment for local wildlife.

The school, through teacher Michelle Rayner, recently partnered with The Patch Landcare.

Ms Rayner mentioned how she would love it if the community would get behind them and build some nesting boxes for the wildlife on the school's property.

Soon enough, thanks to the wonderful work of a man named Bob, the school was given 15 handmade nesting boxes.

“He made us 15 immediately within two weeks of me mentioning it,” she said.

“All different sizes, all for different wildlife.”

With the help of Bob, the students at the school can now offer a nesting area for micro bats, sugar gliders, possums and kookaburras.

Originating from 24 countries, the Burrinja auditorium was a united nations of people from toddlers to older people, and many in between, from all around Yarra Ranges Shire.

Some had taken the very first opportunity they could to make their pledge to become Australian citizens.

Others have lived here for many years and for different reasons have now moved to formalise their Aussie status.

Mayor Fiona McAllister administered the Pledge of Commitment, inviting individuals to make the pledge as either an oath or an affirmation.

She said Australian citizenship was a common bond involving reciprocal rights and obligations which united all Australians while respecting their diversity.

The privileges include the right to vote, to run for government, to enlist in the defence forces and to register children born overseas as Australian citizens.

Obligations, she said, include loyalty to Australia and its people, sharing Australia’s democratic beliefs, upholding and obeying Australian law, and enrolling and voting at elections and referenda.

Wurundjeri woman, Julie Kitto, did a welcome to country, and Monbulk MP James Merlino and councillors Len Cox, Noel Cliff, Samantha Dunn and Jim Child assisted with the ceremony.

“I am sensitive to the fact that Australia is populated by migrants, from our Indigenous people who travelled land bridges between continents, the first fleeters, to those from many lands who have arrived in more recent times,” Cr McAllister said.

Opinion Imaginitive solution IT IS a tragedy for the spirit with which each of us came to be able to be in this place at this time, to cover our remaining treasured open spaces and landscapes, such as remain around and to the west of the Cave Hill Quarry, with ordinary domestic houses and their ugly paraphernalia.

It is also a tragedy not to take advantage of this great dramatic space and not to face its engineering and social challenges. It is here that architects, if not in Australia then internationally, should let their heads go rather than stifle in a mire of domestica fumbled across the only remaining green space left standing up above our town.

Carefully designed, the walls of the quarry should be a magnificent imaginative study in man-made and natural forms and colours. The location of housing and community structures within the quarry would not only work to stabilise the walls but would be a chance to complement the natural art of its formations.

This would also allow the imaginative rezoning of the present open space to the west of the railway line for all forms of agricultural endeavours including dairying and edible forestry.

It could also provide education facilities for the skills required in these.

Even the little central Victorian town of Dookie can muster the grace to use its old quarry as the venue of their Springtime Arts Festival. But Cave Hill is not just a hole in the ground it is an art work emanating from the womb of mother earth.

The Lilydale Cave Hill Quarry in its natural amphitheatre should be a world renowned art and music event venue. In this we do not have to lionise the daughter of the long-time owner and developer of Cave Hill. As Nellie Melba she rose to be one of the greatest operatic divas in the world and become one of our greatest Australians. We do not have to lionise her for she has sung her last farewells in Melbourne, on the little Cave Hill steam tram gently swaying along its way to Mount Evelyn, and in Lilydale. But she would be so proud that even singers as great as her could send the wonderful sounds of all the world's great composers out across our beautiful landscapes.

As a resident of Lilydale for more than 40 years and now treasuring more than five years in Mount Evelyn, I have watched an unimaginative encroaching plague of houses gradually eat

Through some strange series of actions, Lilydale has been allowed to encroach on Mount Evelyn, with both towns suffering a basic loss of identity. And still, even as we think at this moment, there are those making designs to reduce the irreplaceable fuller Road Creek natural environment to a series of headstones in a cemetery. Done well the Cave Hill redevelopment could confirm the identity of Lilydale, and its open space, particularly to the west, is vital in this.

In reference to the recent Yarra Ranges Council decision on stage one of the Cave Hill Development, some have even called the alienation of this green forested open space buffer between Lilydale and Mooroolbark a “Change For The Better”. It beggars belief how allowing a bit more of Lilydale to become part of Mooroolbark and covering it with frightful houses, is a “Change For The Better.”

To these people I have to say that our graceful acceptance of this creates an even greater need for an imaginative solution for the whole site. Perhaps you have not applied the degree of imagination necessary to build architectural forms that rival the amazing forms of the quarry and which could be compared to prized indigenous artforms. Perhaps you should use your imagination to look forward with adventure to an amazing matrix of terraces around the walls of the quarry with their alternating hanging gardens. Perhaps you can imagine how the natural water flow into the quarry could become an inexpensive way to drought-proof the environmental, social, and industrial needs of the surrounding local community. But perhaps you don’t live here and don’t feel the breathing need for an imaginative solution for the people who would have to make their homes in the ordinary mess that will be here. Perhaps you are letting your imaginative selves down in this.

It goes without saying that the old Cave Hill Village – even as a concept – is a treasured place; historically, physically, and humanly. Also, in much the same spirit, the industrial works at Cave Hill are a national treasure; of engineering and scientific history, and an insight into how carefully we need to use our national resources.

It is true that industry, agriculture, and careful resource husbandry, are all necessary and essentially vital parts of the future of every local community and region – as is the education of our people in all these necessary skills.

This, though, is quite beside the point that I am making here. The real issue here and that which is at stake, is just how imaginatively we have to face the future. My point is that we should approach the future use of the Cave Hill amphitheatre with the degree of imagination and excellent behaviour which adequately honours our country and the honour and breathless wonder we should feel in arriving today at our home places within it. Nothing less than the dimension of all the notes – the lights and colours – the depths and heights – of many a great opera is sufficient to apply here. Nothing less should apply than the dimensions of our wondrous bush; of a thousand ranges and river sources, of the sunlit plains, and the everlasting stars. Only in this spirit can we talk specifically about Cave Hill.

Again, in respect to all the remaining manmade and natural forms at Cave Hill, there is no need for immediate actions which will just destroy the chances of a really great result here.

We cannot imagine now what we could imagine in time if we were given this time.

Smoke and mirrors THE issue of Swinburne Campus Lilydale now enters an extremely tenuous phase, as reported (Mail, ‘New TAFE Twist’ Tuesday 14 October).

Why turn this into a game of ‘smoke and mirrors’ Christine Fyffe when it’s so serious? You told me personally just a week ago that the used car lot ‘shopfront’ was a 'load of rubbish’?

Well it appears to be true after all and now we really look like getting a new car yard ‘Ford Clayton's Model' –‘Flexible Learning Centre’ fix instead of using the purpose-built but sadly vacant campus on the hill, complete with some vague robot-run ‘video conferencing’ and ‘transportable training equipment’?

Does that mean this ‘model’ actually comes with wheels – perhaps even ‘cartwheels’ if we are to retain such a flippant approach to higher education ?

But what does it actually mean? The mind boggles as to how extensive any staffing might be under such a shiny new bonnet?

Will this ‘model’ be available in perpetuity or does that offer expire straight after election midnight?

Further is ‘Mr Gray’ merely talking up his

windfall $2.25 million or that shady grey area which is palatable only to those who wish to be fooled until after your re-election when the issue dies another communal death and this time hopefully goes away forever ?

You voted for a State Budget which ripped the guts out of TAFE and now you wish to make ‘Mickey Mouse’ amends because the proletariat appear to be revolting.

And revolting is the word when we’re supposed to swallow the notion put forward by Minister Wakeling that “... government should not be in the business of ... what buildings and what staff they employ ... etc.”

Wake up and smell the exhaust sir, that is exactly what WE employed you to do or have you completely forgotten the Public Commission under which your services are rendered?

And as for Councillor McCarthy’s ... “We couldn’t have asked for a better outcome” - how could you possibly misconstrue this new ‘car dealership’ as being a.. ‘great outcome’.. for any student ?

Given the Yarra Ranges Council's disastrous push earlier to acquire the vacant campus, should we now view you and some of your fellow councillors as mere wisps of smoke in Mrs Fyffe’s mirrors ?

Time for a trick MOST people would be unaware that VicRoads had on their design books for over 20 years the eastly extension of Reynolds Road from Springvale Road to Chirnside Park (Melways pages 3437), this straightforward "green fields" construction through open paddocks is estimated to cost $240-275 million.

This project would be a godsend for all those people living east of Dorset Road in Mount Evelyn, Lilydale, Yarra Valley, and Healesville allowing people to drive north/west to the Northern Ring Road and the airport, Geelong and beyond.

Plus it would allow trucks to exit Springvale Road and turn east to Chirnside Park, bypassing Ringwood and Nunawading thus feeling up Maroondah Highway. The Libs are bady trailing Labor by 12 per cent and need to pull a rabbit out of a hat.

This small project may do the trick, so let’s hear it.

Housing is getting hard

By KATH GANNAWAY IN 2002 70 per cent of rentals in Yarra Ranges were affordable to people on government benefits.

By March this year, according to Yarra Ranges Housing Action Group’s (YRHAG) Kate Coleman, that number had fallen to 8.5 per cent - in line with metropolitan Melbourne.

Kate, who had worked for nearly 40 years in the housing sector and now volunteers her time and experience with YRHAG, says the figures, taken from the DHS quarterly rental report, make homelessness and housing affordability not only a major issue for Yarra Ranges as a community, but an election issue.

YRHAG is hosting a public forum at Montrose Town Centre tomorrow night, Wednesday, 5 November, at 6pm, to which electoral candidates for Croydon, Eildon, Monbulk, Gembrook and Evelyn have been invited.

Guest speakers are Steve Staikos from Community Housing Federation of Victoria, John Devine, CEO of Anchor Inc. and Yarra Ranges Mayor, Cr Fiona McAllister.

YRHAG is very much at the coalface of the issue with representatives of NGOs working in housing in this region as

members, as well as concerned and passionate individuals, like Kate.

She is not prone to subtle messages. The situation, she said, is far too critical for that. “I’d have to say that in the last two years while going out and meeting candidates and politicians, on many occasions it has been difficult because they have no understanding or knowledge of housing or homelessness. They might claim they do; but really, they don’t. “There is no gross funding going into the provision of affordable housing at state or federal level at this point in time and that’s creating major problems,� she said.

She said that affordability in either renting or buying a home, has become extremely expensive and it’s not only people on a benefit who are not managing in the private sector. “Low-income working people are also struggling,� she said. Some of the issues that are little understood include just how public housing works, as opposed to, for instance, how social housing works.

She is concerned at talk of the State Government transferring 12,000 public housing units over to the housing associations and the implications of that in both the short and long term.

“If you’re a working family on a low income in the Eastern Suburbs, if you apply for public housing there is a 25-year waiting list,� she said.

This is not a five-minute debate. The issues are complex and many and include the very definition of homelessness, casualisation of the workforce, growing unemployment and underemployment and the economic and social impact in terms of detriment to education, mental health, general health and well-being, family relationships, domestic violence and more. “If you are homeless, or even technically homeless, it’s very hard to get a job, to access community programs and to do a whole range of things,� Kate said. “I have known homeless people living in tents just off the Warburton Rail Trail. People riding and walking along that trail don’t see them, but I have worked with clients who have lived like that,� she added.

The forum will provide an opportunity to put questions to the candidates about their policies on homelessness and housing affordability, and, YRHAG hopes, will also raise awareness in the broader community.

Volunteers go above and beyond

By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM SCHOOL students and longterm volunteers were among those celebrated at the inaugural La Trobe Community Awards held on 18 October.

The awards are presented to residents of La Trobe that best fit the description of ‘going above and beyond for their community.’ This year, the 27 recipients came from organisations ranging from schools and charity organisations to emergency services and environmental groups.

The highest honour, the La Trobe Medallion, was awarded to two recipients due to the exceptionally high quality of applicants.

The first recipient was Mrs Gwen Horner who has given 60 years of service to a number of community organisations, including Sassafrass and Ferny Creek Fire Brigade, Ferny Creek Tennis Club and Ewing Memorial and Uniting Church.

At 82 years old, Gwen is still an integral member of several local groups and a treasured member of the community and says that she believes volunteers are a vital part of a healthy community. “Volunteering is a great thing because there is always work to be done, and when I am able to help I always have. “The thing I like most about volunteering is meeting people. I’ve come across so many amazing people during my time as a volunteer.�

Rap battle goes viral

Students and teachers from Belgrave Heights Christian School filmed a set-up rap battle that they didn’t think would go viral.

Having only been posted under two weeks ago, the video has been viewed almost 180,000 times on Facebook and

has gained over almost 9000 likes.

The video was based on a video called The Rap-Battle Parody which was to be shown at the end-of-year assembly to celebrate the Year 12s graduating.

It details a comical representation of teachers versus students rapping about school life.

One of the star rappers and vice-captain of Belgrave Heights Christian School, Az-

zan Schuster said he didn’t think the video would get this much attention.

“I put up the video to show my mates and then all of a sudden people kept tagging their friends,” Mr Schuster said.

“It was really funny reading the comments actually because a lot of people thought it was real.”

Taylor back to base

By RUSSELL BENNETT PENNY Taylor’s basketball career has come full circle, with the Australian Opals captain returning to where it all began - the Dandenong Rangers - for her first WNBL stint since 2002.

The Phoenix Mercury WNBA star, whose junior basketball journey started with the Belgrave South Red Devils, is undoubtedly one of the best players in the world.

Now 33, she won a FIBA World Championship gold medal with the Opals in 2006 and was named MVP of the tournament.

She’s also a three-time WNBA champion and three-time all-star in addition to winning championships in her time in the Italian, Russian and Turkish leagues.

Many local basketball fans would have grown up never having the opportunity to watch Taylor play on home soil, but that’s all about to change and she couldn’t be happier.

“I’m pretty lucky,” she said.

“This year has been a great one for me, getting back on to the court after a long couple of years with injury.

“I took some time after the World Championships to work out where would be best for me, and obviously Dandenong is a great option - it’s where I started and after quite a long time I get to come back here and play for a great club, a great own-

ership and a coach and a team that I really respect.

“It couldn’t have worked out better.”

Taylor will once again play under Mark Wright, who was the Rangers coach in her last Dandenong stint, and she also reunites with former Phoenix WNBA championship-winning teammate Cappie Pondexter.

“I’m really excited about it - we’ve both grown over the years and have different things that we’ve added to our arsenal, and I look forward to seeing the way he’s developed and to merge it with the way I have,” she said of playing under Wright again. “(And) Cappie and I have an amazing history of winning championships.

“I love playing with her - I think she has great court vision as well as her individual talents.”

Originally, neither Pondexter nor Taylor were on the Dandenong radar but injuries to Liz Cambage and Monica Wright changed things.

Dandenong has made a slow start to the new season and currently sits last on the ladder with just one win from its first five games. After losing by 22 points to Bendigo on Thursday night, the Rangers went down to the Capitals 101-72 at AIS Arena in Canberra on Saturday.

Taylor is expected to line up for the Rangers against Townsville this Saturday 8 November from 3pm at Dandenong Stadium.

Mixed bag for Olinda OLINDA cricket club’s under 10s combined with Eastfield over the weekend, with a great partnership by Hamish and Aden.

Charlie, Aden and Cai Queary got their very first wickets.

The Olinda under 12s were 4/77 and up against South Croydon with Ethan Blenkiron a stand out with the bat and ball, making 16 not out and at one stage on a hat-trick with the ball.

Olinda under 14s went down fighting in a terrific game of cricket defeated by Ringwood 4/114, to Olinda's 4/107. One wicket apiece to Jonty Scott, Josh Langer and Jake Riordan, with a run out by Josh Langer who batted well and retired on 26 not out.

Ted Box chimed in with a hard earned 16 not out to round off a great weekend of cricket.

Bears on the climb heading for the top

By STEVE BROWN FTGDCA - Round 4 THE Basin Bears have climbed to the top of the ladder, winning their round four Reeves Shield match against Belgrave in fine style.

Despite inclement weather for the one-day clash, the Basin knocked over Belgrave for only 61 and hauled in the target in quick fashion for the loss of just one wicket.

Basin batsman, Danny Rundle, was 34 not out and is now averaging in excess of 200 with the bat.

The Bears dominated with Sean Ryan (3/19) the pick of the bowlers ably assisted by veteran Scott Vozzo with 3/8 against his former club.

Knox Gardens was the only other team to register a win in the top grade easily accounting for a disappointing Upwey Tecoma, dismissed for 113.

The Falcons openers Shannon Small (35no) and Jarrod Butcher (73no) wasted no time chasing the score without losing a wicket.

Johnson Park batted for their full 40 overs to reach 3/184 against Premiers Eildon Park who in reply were 5/122 after 32 overs before rain intervened.

Once again Bryn Gaunt was the backbone of the Sharks innings with an unbeaten 85 in a game that could have gone either way.

Monbulk at home to Ferntree Gully was another interesting match with the Hawks 1/72 in reply to Ferntree Gully’s 4/142.

Once again Josh Henry top scored with 62 not out.

Knoxfield decided to declare at 3/156 to give them time to roll Upper Gully who was in trouble at 5/48 when play halted.

Delivering the football Goodies

FORMER Gembrook Cockatoo Football Club stalwart Steve Goodie is moving on with the next chapter of his footballing life - as the new coach of Southern Football League Division 3 side the Sandown Cobras.

The 44-year-old’s time in footy has been varied and successful as a player (around 400 games), coach (Level 2 accredited) and administrator (Brookers club president for a decade), bringing with him a wealth of experience on and off the field to assist the club as a whole to go to the next step.

He’ll make his first foray into the Southern Football League in 2015 when he takes the helm of the Springvalebased Cobras.

He has had stints at Eastern Football League powerhouse Vermont, Eastern Ranges in the TAC Cup, Yarra Valley Mountain District Football league (YVMDFL) giants Upwey-Tecoma, ROC in Casey Cardinia, and Ellinbank and District club Cora Lynn. He’s a many-time premiership player and a five-time senior best and fairest award winner.

Cobras general manager Brett Phillips welcomed

Goodie’s arrival, saying: “We are really pleased to have landed someone with the knowledge and experience of Steve Goodie, who has come highly recommended for his football nous, intellect and being a student of the game.

“I want to thank Phil Dickson, Mark Scott and Ross Tiller who joined me on the selection panel as we worked our way through a field of quality candidates over the last month.

“We went out to identify the most appropriate person to lead us through our next phase as a football club and we are confident Steve is the right man to deliver what we are after. Whilst his primary job and love is to coach, he will be a very valuable resource for us off field and will help us drive a number of initiatives to secure the club’s future.”

In accepting the position at the Cobras, Goodie said: “I am really looking forward to the challenge of taking the club to the next level, on the back of the work done on and off the field over the last few years, and really bringing together further the strength of numbers the club has had. I will be looking to bring an attractive modern brand of footy to advance the club forward.”

Sunshine brings scores WARM weather and a holiday vibe greeted athletes to week five of the Yarra Ranges Athletics summer season. Athletes made the most of the calm conditions with many recording multiple personal bests throughout the evening.

Great fields and friendly competition produced some exceptional performances and club records.

One of the nights highlights was the smiles and laughter heard during the ‘little kids’ race, an event held each night for the younger siblings of club athletes, with parents hopefully joining in next time. The Yarra Ranges Athletics club will be hosting the Croydon Little Athletics club next week, in what is sure to be a fun morning of athletics.

The senior athletes took to the

track on Saturday afternoon with hail stones and stormy, cold weather which made for a difficult and unpleasant start. However, Lee Taylor and Mark Beavis battled through, scoring some very good results.

The little athletes achieved some outstanding results, with Erika Bedyn, Tristan and Joe Fishburn debuting for the club.

Good luck to club members competing in the Victorian All Schools Track and Field Championships next weekend at Lakeside Stadium.

Clowes eyes Long Island

WITH rain sweeping across the course in a sometimes horizontal manner and all stock being moved to high ground, only the ultra-keen members at Emerald Golf Club sloshed to the first tee.

The VGL November Monthly was on the plate as was the Medallist of Medallists gong for the right to represent the club at Long Island later this month.

With this in mind, Peter Clowes (17) put his foot down and left all others in his dust, or in this case, wake!

He came in with a net 63 to win B Grade overall and the right to play at Long Island on 23 November.

A Grade was won by David Mackey (16) with net 69.

Leigh Morison (17) was the only other player to score his handicap

with 69 as well.

Broc Reynolds won the Stockdale and Leggo nearest the pin on the 4th, Clowes the 7th, Ian Cranston the 12th, Leigh Morison the 13th and Ken Hill won the pro pin prize on the 18th.

The ladies’ medal went to Brianna McCoy from Constance Whitlock, wielding her new clubs into second place.

Wednesday’s Overly Fragile Golf (OFG) was a Stableford event which produced a dead heat between Moss Fuller (25) and Bobby Kennedy (20) who both amassed 41 points.

As it was a brilliant day in brilliant conditions, the scoring was very good. John Piggott (22) and Mick Petrie (29) both had 40 points, Ken Sumsion (24) had 38 while Ian Scott(27) and Mike Litchfield (9) both had 37.
