Thousands of acres are estimated to have been burnt and smoke could be seen and smelt as far north as Warwick yesterday morning.

THREE aircraft water bombers have been called in to help battle a large bushfire burning east of Ballandean.

No properties were under threat as of yesterday morning, but fire and emergency services were bracing themselves for possible flare-ups with extreme fire conditions forecast later in the day.

The situation took a turn for the worse on Tuesday afternoon, with the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service (QFES) issuing a Watch and Act alert for residents from Doctors Creek Road to Parrish Lane advising them to enact their bushfire plans or evacuate as the then uncontrolled blaze raced towards the area.

Glen Aplin Brigade volunteer Mick Thompson has been on the ground fighting the inferno since it sparked on Monday.

“I’ve just been going home and having a quick sleep and then coming back,” he said yesterday.

Mr Thompson said he and his counterparts hoped to contain the fire that day, weather permitting, with the help of aerial attack.

“At this stage it is looking good, we will have aircraft water bombers here in about halfan-hour and they can assist us to steer the fire to where we want it to go,” he said.

“At the moment it is along Eukey Road and we are hoping to get it contained between Eukey and Pyramids roads.”

By ALENA HIGGINS THIS year, 11 November marks the 96th anniversary of the armistice which ended WWI. For many, Remembrance Day is a time to reflect on sacrifices made by our Diggers who suffered or perished on the battlefield to secure the freedoms we take for granted today.

Ensuring the legacy of our war veterans is not forgotten, Stanthorpe couple Norm and Helen Gale along with a team of volunteers from the Stanthorpe and District Naval Sub Section will be selling Remembrance Day memorabilia in the lead-up to the day.

Mr Gale, who served with the Royal Australian Navy and is president of the Navy Sub Section, urged the local community to show their support.

“It is about keeping the memory alive and making sure our Defence Force people are looked after,” Mr Gale said.

“Proceeds go towards Defence Force welfare, to the Navy, Army and Airforce, and also local organisations.

By ALENA HIGGINS WARWICK Hospital will welcome four new doctors and is undergoing a comprehensive services and infrastructure review it was announced on Tuesday.

Darling Downs Hospital and Health Board chairman Mike Horan made the announcement at the board’s monthly meeting, which was held at Warwick Hospital.

He said four new House Officer positions have been created for the Emergency Unit.

Two of these doctors will be Principal Health Officers, who were usually fourth-year graduates.

“The board believes these additional staff members will help with demand and the quality of care provided,” he said.

Local Warwick board member Dr Ross Hetherington said the recruitment was a real coup

for the city.

“These four doctors are not just baby doctors,” Dr Hetherington said.

The Capital Infrastructure Planning Study (CIPS) involves reviewing the services and building at the two Southern Downs hospitals to ensure they best meet the community’s need and will take into account a number of factors at the hospitals including bed numbers and patient flow.

At Warwick, the study has included comments on the theatre, maternity, nursery and emergency areas.

“By undertaking a CIPS at the Warwick and Stanthorpe hospitals we can identify what are the best options for the future developments of the hospitals,” Mr Horan said.

The study is expected to be completed by the end of November and will be presented

to the Darling Downs Hospital and Health Board and to the Department of Health.

Any future funding will be up to the government.

The meeting was also a chance for board members to tour parts of the hospital, meet with staff and inspect the new state-of-the-art dental van.

The school-based dental van, which joins four similar vans in the Southern Downs, features the latest dental chair, fibre optics, X-ray equipment, on-board sterilisation equipment and room to secure records.

In future, school aged children will be able to access funding for care in the school dental vans through the Commonwealth Government’s Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS), Mr Horan said.

DDHHS employs six therapists who service 60 schools across the region.

$40m expansion IT’S been on the cards for years, with a string of boarded-up shops near the corner of Palmerin and Fitzroy streets signaling the intent.

And now plans to expand Rose City Shoppingworld have finally been put in motion, with Queensland property developer McConaghy Group lodging a development application with Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) last week for a $40 million redevelopment of the mall.

The augmentation of the centre, located on Palmerin Street in the heart of Warwick, is forecast to create 200 permanent local jobs and turn the Rose City into a regional retail hub, attracting shoppers from the Southwest Southern Downs, Northern NSW and

as far west as Goondiwindi.

Managing director Robert McConaghy said the redevelopment was designed to enhance the main street by creating a new entry at the corner of Palmerin and Fitzroy Streets.

“We are very proud of this proposal because it adds to the CBD instead of diluting it, with more parking, better street activation and pedestrian access to the centre and expansion of the major retailers around Palmerin Street,” Mr McConaghy said.

“This new enhanced shopping centre will reduce the need for retail dollars to be spent outside Warwick and act as a drawcard for residents of neighbouring towns to visit Warwick and spend their money here.”

Mr McConaghy said the architects had gone to great pains to ensure the

style was in sympathy with the heritage style of the CBD, just like the existing building.

Key features of the new development include a bigger food court, a new and extended Woolworths supermarket, a new full-sized Coles supermarket, more speciality stores, an enhanced parents’ room, and a new entry ramp to the basement off Fitzroy Street, leading to over 160 new car parks.

Other features include a new travelator and a new lift with access to the expanded undercover parking, and a new landscaped arbour adjacent to Leslie Park.

Construction of the centre is expected to take more than a year and employ up to 300 construction workers.

But a spokesman for the McCo-

naghys said he was unsure when the first sod of soil would be turned, saying it “all depends upon the DA approval process”.

The number of new retail tenancies is also unknown.

Westpac Warwick bank manager Bevan Henningson confirmed the branch, currently on the corner of Palmerin and Fitzroy streets, will be moving into the new shopping complex once it has been approved.

Once complete, the upgraded cen-

tre will create a 25 per cent increase in employment compared to the old facility, with approximately 100 new direct retail jobs and a further 100 jobs in areas such as cleaning, maintenance and trades.

McConaghy Group has been a corporate citizen of Warwick since 1984 when it opened the original town shopping centre as Woolworths and a few specialty shops.

Council looks at yearly rates valuations RATES across the district could be set for another shake-up after it was revealed the Southern Downs local government area will be subject to an annual valuation.

The review was first brought to the Free Times’ attention last week when a letter from the acting executive director of the State Valuation Service to former Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) CEO Andrew Roach was included in the correspondence section of council’s October business paper.

In the letter dated 7 October 2014, Vern Di Salvo thanks Mr Roach for seeking the department’s advice on whether or not an annual valuation (effective 30 June 2015)

should be undertaken, and notes Mr Roach advised that one should occur.

The letter goes on to say after considering the statutory requirements, the Valuer General has decided that a annual valuation will be undertaken.

The news comes just weeks after a group of angry ratepayers took SDRC to task over “cash grabbing” more than two year’s worth of back-dated rates the result of a maintenance valuation. SDRC subsequently resolved to waive the fees following fierce public backlash.

valuations “are determined as at 1 October 2014 and will become effective as at 30 June 2015”.

“The decision to undertake a new valuation for the Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) for 2015 was made following consultation with the local council, local groups and industry stakeholders and an evaluation of the property market survey report,” he said.

“State Valuation Service valuers undertake an annual property market survey of each local government area in Queensland to determine which of them should be subject to annual land valuations.

“This process has determined that the Southern Downs Regional Council will be one of 29 rate-

Under the Land Valuation Act 2010, valuation notices have to be issued no later than 31 March in the year in which the annual valuation is to take effect.

The last annual valuation of properties in the SDRC area occurred on 1 October 2011.

The DNRM has no role in setting council rates and land valuations do not automatically mean that local government rates will increase, the spokesman said.

By ALENA HIGGINS “FLABBERGASTED” is how Warwick’s Fred Hyde describes the moment he was announced the 2015 Queensland Senior Australian of the Year last Friday night.

The 94-year-old admits he was certain fellow nominee and philanthropist Clive Berghofer was going to win and failed to prepare a thank you speech for guests at the gala awards ceremony held at the Queensland Museum in Brisbane.

“I stood up and went up and tried to make a speech,” he recalled on Monday.

“I was a bit flabbergasted but I got them to laugh which is one thing.”

The former engineer, who has spent the last three decades rescuing and educating abandoned children in Bangladesh, triumphed over three other contenders and will now join recipients from the other states and territories as finalists for the National Awards to be announced on 25 January 2015 in Canberra.

But while he acknowledges the accolade rates “reasonably high” on his list of achievements, he has more pressing issues to contemplate.

Having poured all his personal and financial resources into building 45 schools, five kindergartens and teacher training facilities in the most impoverished parts of Bangladesh, the lifetime bachelor is hoping his recent recognition will generate publicity and funding for his not-for-profit organisation, Co-operation in Development, and uncover a capable successor.

“I don’t require anyone of any great expertise,” he said of the position.

“Someone who likes children and can add one and one together and get the right answer as there is quite a bit bookkeeping.”

“I retired at 57 years of age, which was too young, and in a few months I was bored,” Mr Hyde said.

“There are an awful lot of bored people about and they grow old because they have no incentive to stay young.

“The best thing you can do to stay young is get 12,000 kids around you all wanting something,” he laughed.

“It does keep you going otherwise you just sit back and just wait for time to pass.”

My Hyde will return to Bangladesh next month where he usually spends up to nine months of the year.

MEMORIES of bygone eras still echo between the bricks and mortar of Queensland’s first National School.

Situated on the grounds of Warwick East State School, the historic “brick building”, as it is affectionately known, has provided shelter to Rose City students spanning 15 decades.

Principal Warren Elder hopes to capture some of these classroom anecdotes and is calling on past students to write to him with their fondest memories of the brick building ahead of its 150th commemorative celebrations next month.

He said the letters would feature in a static display inside the building during an open day from 9am to noon on Saturday 22 November.

“Any memorabilia they have and would like to lend, I will look after it,” he said. “(Visitors) will also get to see the new facilities they wouldn’t have seen and have a chat and coffee in the new library.”

It is not known exactly when the building was completed, but it was designed by prominent architect Benjamin Blackhouse, with the aid of a government subsidy, according to research undertaken by Warwick East State School Parents and Citizens Association.

Built in 1863/64, the brick building replaced the old timber slab used since the Warwick National School, the first National School in what would later become Queensland, opened on 4 November 1850 with 30 pupils.

An excerpt from The History of Warwick East State School 18502000 states the contractor for the construction was William Conley, a Welshman who had previously been associated with the building of Talgai Homestead.

The Conleys had 16 children, the eldest, also called William, excelled at his schoolwork at the National School and later became managing director of the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper.

The bricks used in construction also had a local connection, coming from Schnitzerlings Brickworks, whose firm began production in

stories on Exit International, a euthanasia group, in the Walkley categories: All Media - Social Equity Journalism; Radio News And Current Affairs Journalism; and TV/AV Daily Current Affairs.

The finalists were chosen from over 1400 entries from Australian journalists, which were judged by more than 100 senior industry representatives.

Since graduating from USQ in

2010, Ms Gribbin has been awarded the Walkley Young Australian Journalist of the Year award in the Radio/Audio category twice.

She is a journalist with the ABC’s National Reporting Team.

She is based in Perth after working in Mount Isa, Bundaberg and Brisbane.

The 2014 Walkley Awards winners will be announced at a ceremony in Sydney in December.

By ALENA HIGGINS A FORMER corner store in Warwick has been given the green light to be converted into shortterm accommodation.

Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) approved an application for a material change of use of the building on the corner of Hamilton and Grafton streets last Wednesday, despite receiving eight submissions against the development.

The applicant proposes to re-model the building into shortterm accommodation for up to 12 people.

Deputy mayor Ross Bartley was quick to voice his concerns during discussion, saying he would not support the application.

He described it as unsuitable for a residential area and likened it to trying to “drive a square peg in a round hole”.

“It is well and truly a residential area now that the railway line has died down,” Cr Bartley said.

Walls come down

A MAN was airlifted by helicopter last week after falling from a carnival ride that was being setup ahead of the Warwick Rodeo.

The 58-year-old was working on the ride on Thursday afternoon when he slipped and fell approximately three metres. The steel arm of the ride then fell on top of him.

The Brisbane man suffered a fractured pelvis, fractured right leg and possible spinal injuries.

He was taken to Warwick Hospital just before 6pm where he was met by the Toowoomba-based RACQ CareFlight Rescue crew.

The patient was then airlifted to Brisbane’s Princess Alexandra Hospital in a stable condition.

Meanwhile a man in his fifties suffered suspected chest and spinal injuries on Monday after a front end loader rolled backwards down an embankment on a property about 40 kilometers east of Texas.

The Gold Coast rescue chopper was sent to the property about 12.30pm.

He was flown to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in a stable condition.

Fall from fun ride

While the demolition of 84 Fitzroy Street was denied, a State Government decision approved the demolition of 82 Fitzroy Street in December 2012 after it was inadvertently left off the council’s heritage register.

Department of Environment and Heritage Protection executive director Andrew Connor told the Free Times in June 2013 the department had approved the building owners’ application to demolish 82 Fitzroy Street as it was in a state of disrepair and required substantial replacement of original building materials.

THEY have been companions for more than a century, existing side-by-side and signifying the transformation of Warwick in the late 1860s and 1870s from a squatters’ town to one of Queensland’s most prosperous agricultural districts.

But the legacy of Plumbs Chambers was torn apart on Monday when demolition crews levelled the brick and timber building at 82 Fitzroy Street to make way for the expansion of Rose City Shoppingworld.

The McConaghy Group acted swiftly,

tearing down the structure and a number of others, including the former McDougall and Sons building, barely a week after declaring it had lodged an application with council for a $40 million redevelopment of the mall.

The slightly younger stone building at 84 Fitzroy Street, thought to have been built in 1874-75, will remain it its entirety and be restored after an application by the McConaghy Group to destroy its rear service wing was quashed by a court ruling.

However, its ill-fated neighbour was not so lucky.

There is no increase in the floor area as a result of the proposed development and the applicant has indicated an on-site manager will be permanently residing at the site despite it not being a requirement of the Planning Scheme.

The motion was carried seven votes to two, with Cr Bartley and Cr Vic Pennisi voting against the application.

A SHORT, sharp thunderstorm had the potential to unravel the Rodeo and Rose Festival’s mardi gras on Friday night, but the weather gods acquiesced.

Warwick Tourism and Events CEO Tracy Vellacott said the night was a wonderful chance to catch up with friends and families and brave the vomatron rides.

“I think the numbers were comparable to previous years,” she said.

“I think the amusement rides stretched further down Palmerin Street this year, but if you bunched all the people up together it would be comparable.

In this climate I think it is good to be able to hold firm (on numbers).

While entrants in the street parade the following day were down by about half a dozen, Ms Vellacott said what it lacked in numbers was made up for in quality.

“There were so many quality entrants that did a great job of embracing the black and white and read (to mark the Warwick Daily News’ 150 anniversary) all over theme.”

IT MAY be done and dusted for another year, but the sweet smell of success still lingers several days after the conclusion of last week’s 2014 Warwick Gold Cup Campdraft and Rodeo.

Warwick Show and Rodeo Society president Dr John Kiss said the event was “definitely the best rodeo for many, many years”.

“The crowd was around 20,000 for the full week and we obviously had very good, fine weather,” he said.

“We spared no cost sourcing the bucking stock - we had the best stock in Australia - and good show bulls and broncs and the crowd loved that.”

Peter O’Neill on Roma took out the 2014 Black Toyota Warwick Gold Cup with a score of 264, just two points shy of his nearest rivals, equal second place-getters Lindsay Knight and Peter Lamont.

Dr Kiss said the future of Australia’s most famous rodeo was looking bright after several “new big sponsors” indicating they wanted to come on board.

“Every spectator I’ve spoken to congratulated the Show and Rodeo Committee on putting on such a good, smooth, slick professional rodeo and campdraft,” he said.

“Event to event to event was seamless, like seeing a good stage show that has the audience at the edge of their seats.

“All the workers, myself and the management committee get a real thrill out of putting on the top show and this is the best we have put on yet.”

Big bite I HAVE talked to people regarding the fluoridation survey. In many instances I was told that they did receive the water bill but not the survey. They thought the rest was junk mail and some had already gone into the garbage.

Many also who do not understand why it has to be mailed back to Warwick, two weeks before the water account is due to be paid? Why not save money and drop it into a box at the civic centre when the water account is being paid? What is the urgency?

Some are not happy about being identified by the survey number. It is not council’s business how they voted. Where is the privacy?

People who have town water connected but did not consume water for some reason, also owners of vacant land where water is not connected but they still had to pay a water access annual charge of $384.30 did not receive a fluoridation survey.

Why are those people disenfranchised?

For town dwellers to receive an unadulterated water supply it is required that the number of the returned surveys be at least 50 per cent of the total that were sent out. And also the no votes to be over half of the total returned. It is hard to achieve.

The common opinion is, this is just a huge con job because many surveys will not be returned on time, or at all. But let’s prove them wrong and vote no to fluoride.

Stay out of it IN THE last few days an extremist has made a deadly attack, and two Canadian soldiers are dead. What can we do to stop these outrages? Of course it is to be expected if we send in military assets to fight ISIS, we can expect retaliation.

The best solution to the problem would be to stay out of the Middle East conflict and let ISIS and its enemies slug it out on the battlefield. Why should we care who rules in that part of the world?

We need to close our borders to further immigration from that part of the world, and anyone from Australia going to fight for ISIS should have their passports cancelled, and never be allowed to return to Australia.

Some benefit I WOULD like to debunk the myth that removing the carbon tax has been a financial benefit to households, specifically for Ergon customers (tariff 11). Being a rural Queenslander, there is no alternative to Ergon for us for electricity supply.

I was recently surprised to find my Ergon bill had gone up; especially considering the carbon tax had been repealed. I asked Ergon why and they replied (essentially), ‘Don’t blame us, blame the Queensland Competition Authority’ and gave me a link.

The fact sheet that appeared states: “At 50 cents, the 2013-'14 service charge was around half of the actual fixed cost per customer in 2013-'14 (98.3 cents) With the service charge so low, the usage charge had to recover the majority of fixed costs of the electricity consumed by the customer.

“This imbalance between service and usage charges means customers with higher consumption are subsidising customers with lower consumption”.

In response, what Ergon have done, for tariff 11, is increase the daily service fee from 55.25 cents/day to 91.76 cents/day, resulting in an increase of $133.24/annum. However, due to the repeal of the carbon tax, the cost per kWh has decreased from 26.73 cents/kWh to 25.378 cents/ kWh (1.352 cents or five per cent). The consumption that would result in no increase in a consumer’s bill (where the annual increase in the daily service fee equals the annual decrease in kWh costs) is 9855 kWh/annum.

THE water bill had my name clearly on display, my address likewise, however the survey about fluoridation of water supply was inert, apparently without power of action. Why was this most important voting paper that has a really profound effect on rates values and health outcomes, not of equal importance to council?

Then a tiny red number caught my eye hiding almost out of sight, seemingly of no importance.

A phone call to council revealed this number 3218, was my identity. When will ratepayers finally convince SDRC to act like the public servants they are? They are not to be trusted when tricky behaviour is detected. If council were seriously hearing the ratepayers, they would go out

According to the figures of the Queensland Competition Authority, a household that used this amount of electricity would typically have about seven residents.

According to the figures of the Australian Bureau of Statistics, only 10 per cent of households had over five people in 2006, with the average household having 2.6 residents.

By setting the break-even point at 9855 kWh/ annum for tariff 11, Ergon have exclude over 90 per cent of households from any economic benefit from the carbon tax repeal and effectively forced them to subsidise the usage of wasteful households, business and industry.

They have also penalised low power users and those with the foresight to install solar panels to reduce their power bills. The less you consume, the greater is the proportional increase in your bill.

KILLARNEY and Leyburn residents are being advised not to be alarmed when they hear flood warning sirens being tested tomorrow and Saturday.

Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) will conduct testing and final commissioning of its flood emergency warning systems on both days between 9am and 11am at Killarney and 1pm and 3pm at Leyburn.

The siren system, one located at Killarney Fire Station on Ivy Street and the other located at the Leyburn police station on the Leyburn Forestry Road, is a fixed siren used to alert the community of an impending flood that may directly affect the community. The sirens are audible for between 915 metres and 1280 metres, depending on weather conditions.

“We want to emphasise to everyone in the Killarney and Leyburn areas that the activation of the test message does not imply that the township is under immediate threat of flash flooding,” SDRC disaster management co-ordinator Mark Saunders said.

“However, we also want local people to know that any activation outside the stated times indicates that the township is at risk of flash flooding.

“The message in an emergency is: ‘Attention attention, this is a flood warning announcement.

Go to higher ground now. Avoid low lying areas.

I repeat, this is a flood warning, go to higher ground now’.”

Airport green light AUSTRALIA’S peak aviation safety body has given Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport the green light for regular passenger transport (RPT).

In what is a major milestone for Australia’s newest airport in 50 years, the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) has approved Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport as a certified aerodrome.

Wagners chairman John Wagner said the CASA certification process had been a ‘workin-progress’ for the past 18 months and included ensuring runway specifications and airport procedures and training manuals were compliant.

As part of the CASA certification, Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport will become a ‘secure’ airport on 10 November with the first official RPT Qantaslink flight scheduled for 17 November.

Regional Express (REX) also will service the airport from 1 January 2015.

SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council’s longest serving staff members have been recognised at a special awards event last Tuesday night at Warwick Town Hall.

More than 41 staff with a combined total of 900 years of service were thanked for their commitment and dedication, with a special mention going to longest serving employee Owen McPaul.

Affectionately known as Macca, the valued employee started his career with the Stanthorpe Council in 1968 as a labourer doing survey work.

“SDRC is proud to recognise an incredible 45 years of service to council," acting CEO David Tuxford said.

“He played a leading part in projects such as the installation of the large steel Armco culverts under Texas Road and the rebuilding of the concrete bridge on Glenlyon Dam Road after the 1974 floods.”

Macca has operated many different types of machinery over the years but the past 20 years have been spent on a grader maintaining our region’s roads.

Mr Tuxford said Macca decided to hang up his ‘high vis shirt’ on 11 July this year and wished him all the best in his retirement.

Staff with 10,15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 and 45 years of service were presented with a special framed photograph of iconic landscapes of the Southern Downs and for the first time awards were presented to staff members who exemplified the five values of the organisation (communication, integrity, efficiency, leadership and co-operation).

Mayor Peter Blundell and several other councillors attended to offer their congratulations.

“All organisations should take time to recognise their most valuable resource - their people,” Cr Blundell said.

Tougher fire penalty NORTHERN Tablelands MP Adam Marshall has welcomed the passage through State Parliament of tough new penalties that will empower the NSW Police Force and the NSW Rural Fires Service (RFS) to bring those who deliberately and recklessly disregard Total Fire Ban warnings before the courts.

Under the new strong measures included in the Rural Fires Amendment Act 2014, Mr Marshall said offenders could be prosecuted under a new of-

fence and face a fine of up to $132,000 and/or seven years prison time if they deliberately light or allow a fire to escape their property on a Total Fire Ban day.

“In what is predicted to be a difficult bushfire season this year, and with total fire bans in place currently, these new laws are timely and ensure firebugs will have to face the consequences of their actions,” he said.

“A jury can still find someone guilty of the existing offence which

carries serious penalties of up to $110,000 and up to five years prison time, if they think the person did not have enough warning that a Total Fire Ban was in place.”

Other changes will allow NSW Police and RFS to penalise less serious offenders with fines up to $2200.

“Unfortunately, we still see a lot of people ignore warnings and conduct burns on their own properties with complete disregard for Total Fire Bans,” Mr Marshall said.

“Out of control fires have a devastating impact on life, property and communities.

“It’s only right that those who cause this devastation should have the book thrown at them.”

Other amendments contained in the new laws streamline fire permit requirements and ensure those who throw lit cigarettes, matches or other “fire objects” from a vehicle will be held accountable, not just the registered owner.

School rolls out the welcome mat STUDENTS at Severnlea State School have been kept busy with a number of activities over the past few months.

Late last term they hosted the under-8s day for all the southern schools and invited the kindy groups from in town to participate.

“It was a wonderful day with fantastic weather and with over 150 children, students, parents and teachers present we certainly all enjoyed the activities,” principal Cameron Brown said.

“Teachers and teacher

aides from the southern schools came up with a fun and vast array of activities that engaged all the students. The older Severnlea students demonstrated great maturity in both organising activities and also looking after the small children.”

He thanked the fire and police services who were able to arrive and kept the children entertained. The day finished with a sausage sizzle, a bag full of activities and an experience full of great memories of Severnlea.

Meanwhile students had the pleasure of the Ambulance Service at school where they learnt a lot from the ladies in charge and were able to ring triple-zero to log a real life emergency call.

Mr Brown said school numbers continued to rise and they were looking at having two fulltime teachers.

“This will enable us to continue our small school approach to learning and providing individualised care and support for all the students,” he said.

Rubbing out the ‘grubs’ TENTERFIELD police are appealing for public assistance to lock up a number of “grubs” following a spate of offences last week.

Acting Sergeant Mick Eaton said several residents were the subject of stealing from motor vehicle offences in the early hours of Thursday morning, along with an attempt to plunder a safe from the High Street gym.

“It’s extremely disappointing that a small number of persons in town chose to think that stealing other’s property is acceptable,” Acting Sergeant Eaton said.

“Local police also need the assistance of locals, and anyone with any information, no matter how small it is, please call the station or Crime Stoppers.

“It may be just the info we need to lock these grubs up.”

Officers would particularly like to speak to anyone who saw a white Commodore driving around Tenterfield last Thursday morning, and who could possibly assist in identifying the occupants in the vehicle.

The vehicle was stolen from a Logan Street address earlier that night and left abandoned on Federation Oval.

Crime scene officers attended Tenterfield on Thursday and conducted examinations in town.

Burst of brilliance WALLS of Colour, and exhibition by Roslyn Creevy and Joyce Gray, will be officially opened by Southern Downs MP Lawrence Springborg tomorrow night from 6pm.

The exhibition will run from 30 October until 18 January at Weeroona Park, Lock and Marsh Street, Stanthorpe.

It can be viewed from 10am to 4pm on Tuesday to Friday and from 10am to 1pm on weekends.

Put through their paces in saddle skills THE annual Team Penning and Campdraft Skills weekend will be held at the Stanthorpe Showgrounds on Saturday and Sunday.

The event is hosted by the Stanthorpe Agricultural Society’s Campdraft and Team Penning subcommittee.

On the Saturday, gates open at 11am and the competition will start at 1pm with the Team Penning Fun Competition in the rodeo arena.

“We’ll have a finals competition under lights for the 10 fastest times from the general competition, and then present our prizes and prizemoney,” campdraft secretary Paula Boatfield said.

include the popular Keith Thorne Building Farmer’s Challenge where teams demonstrate their prowess at a range of “farm related” activities.

Sunday’s program includes a range of campdraft related activities including cut out instruction and round one peg, shadowing/ mirror work, mechanical cow, etc.

“Proceeds from this weekend will contribute to our showgrirl fundraising for Gemma Osbaldeston,” Paula said.

The successful applicant will be required to work with the Southern Downs Regional Council and Queensland Fire & Emergency Services in the management of the Stanthorpe SES Unit and its volunteers. We are seeking applicants that are community minded, prepared to contribute to the ongoing development of a professional volunteer emergency service organisation and who exemplify personal drive and integrity. Although previous volunteer experience would be an advantage, applicants do not need to have any SES experience but must be prepared to undertake appropriate SES training modules identified within the SES Training Framework for the position. The applicant will need to possess sound administration, financial and resource management skills. This position reports to the Southern Downs Regional Council and the SESQ Area Office in Toowoomba.

Dark day to be an Aussie the Souths bowlers. Lanza took two wickets for 19 runs and Cameron and Furness each finished with three wickets apiece.

Souths faced a reasonable run chase and Mark Lanza showed there are still plenty of runs in those legs top scoring with 56.

Son Jordan Lanza backed up a good showing with the ball to score 31 runs. In a good team batting effort captain Ben Staley scored 26 and Hayden Taylor also added 23 runs before Souths reached the required total.

RSL has a comfortable win over Valleys and collected six points for their efforts - claiming an additional two bonus points after winning in 20 overs.

WHAT a weekend for Aussie sport lovers - talk about the darkest days in sport.

They don’t come much gloomier than Friday night at Suncorp stadium where we saw a more committed, more experienced and hungrier Kiwis outfit pull the Kangaroos’ pants down.

Guess on the bright side it would be hard for the Aussies to play more poorly.

If that was not enough, we then had to watch graciously as the Cox Plate, the epitome of weight for age racing in this country went the way of an overseas invader for the first time.

That’s one Cup and a Plate that have disappeared over the horizon - begs the question will it be the last or will the second and most important Cup head in the same direction on Tuesday.

I fear there could be more tears in our Cups.

Adding to the indignity, the Aussie cricketers in Dubai embarrassed themselves at the hands of the Pakistan spin attack.

It is obvious we are desperate for a good leggie and some batsmen who can read spin (pardon the pun).

Out of all this misery for Aussie sports fans surely there must be a Melbourne Cup omen.

After all we have crook Kangaroos, jockey Kiwis and daft cricketers playing in the heat in Lawrence of Arabia territory pulped with a bunch of mad adding invaders.

Surely there is a nod to the winner in there somewhere.

Seems as good a way to find the winner as form guides seem to be of no assistance to me this Melbourne carnival.

If you are having a punt on Tuesday using your tried and true system, the trusty pin, the form guide or an omen bet - good luck. May the horse be with you.

For what it is worth Opinion at the bottom of the weights may have a say in the finish and if he secures a start Caravan Rolls On could just be that omen bet.

SUCCESS FOR STANTHORPE JUNIOR STANTHORPE junior golfer Dylan Barreclough held his nerve to finish the Stanthorpe Open an impressive four under par 68 to be declared the overall winner of the event.

A sensational result for this youngster who at this stage plays off an AGU Handicap of one.

A handicap that is likely to have to be trimmed in the not too distant future, especially if he can continue to produce performances of the calibre of last weekend.

The Stanthorpe Open was held in near perfect conditions and golfers from Maryborough to Armidale joined the locals in the hotly contested event Open competition golf club held their Open Carnival. In the grade divisions, Luke Reardon (71), Rob Reeves (80) and A. Mogg (88) from City Golf won A, B and C Grade.

Another local, Neta Thouard flew the flag successfully in the ladies’ event.

Her stableford score of 43 points returned her bragging honours in the ladies’ event.

Division winners were Tub Ingall (Div 1), Kay Webb (Div 2) and Lorraine Gurnett (Div 3).

A medley stableford played on Saturday also attracted a full field and winners were father and son team of Len Leigh and Matt Leigh with a score of 52 points. A countback eventually gave the runners-up position to the combinations of Bob Watts and Aaron Simmers (49 points).

Although local players, knowing the conditions the best, were successful in the major prizes, rundowns, pin shots and runner-up prizes were shared between locals and visitors.

The club wishes to thank all those local and visiting golfers who made the weekend such a great success and particular mention to longstanding sponsors of this event Maddie’s Gift a gallery and also City Golf Club, who support golf across the Darling Downs region.

A dedicated contingent of members helped in the considerable preparations for last weekend and they can are well proud of their efforts. Without them the carnival would most certainly not have been as successful.

This weekend sees golfing return to the norm on Saturday - 1 November heralds Monthly Medal and the beginning of a new season both will be played in conjunction with the Roy Carnell Memorial trophy contested by winners of medal events across the preceding 12 months.

Names of those eligible players can be found on the timesheet.

RUSTY BUT KEEN TO RUMBLE STALWART social player John Pillar and member mate Mark (Bruno) Brennan checked in for Friday’s Red Rooster Rumble a little rusty on stableford point scoring technique but in good cheer and keen to have a hit.

It was the right attitude and Pillar pipped closest rival Gordon McKeen by three points by carding 27 points and taking out the pro shop trophy.

McKeen was runner-up on 24 points and two rundown balls were given out each to Peter Dipplesman and Brian Sullivan c/b on 23 points.

Peter Dipplesman collected a Red Rooster hot chook voucher for the pin on seven but the other two were skinners. Neil McCosker of Red Rooster continues to support this Friday ninehole event now in its eighth year.

It provides a great pathway for social players into the game and into the Warwick club.

JUNIOR TALENT ON DISPLAY ON Sunday juniors from across the Darling Downs will be teeing off in the 2014 Darling Downs Junior Classic.

Organisers are expecting a field of around 80 promising youngsters to tee off from around 8.30am.

There are some excellent juniors in the region and their skills will be on display. It will be worth it to follow some of these groups around and get a first-hand look at their skills.

HOT STUFF LAST Sunday was a hot one at the Inglewood SSAA. It was a day where the barrels never cooled. In the camp it was 46 Celsius, none silly enough to check the temperature in the sun.

And everyone made sure they did not handle the weaponry by the barrel.

A 25-metre Mayleigh Cup event was held for rimfire pistol.
