A GEELONG art dealer faces charges over an alleged multi-million-dollar Brett Whiteley art fraud.

Peter Gant, who ran Irascible Gallery at Melbourne, is embroiled in police allegations he sold three fake masterpieces from Whiteley’s Lavender Bay series that were produced by art conservator and co-accused Mohamed Aman Siddique.

Both are listed to appear before the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court in March over the allegations regarding the paintings: Orange Lavender Bay, Big Blue Lavender Bay and Lavender Bay Through the Window.

The works sold, respectively, for an alleged $1.1 million, $2.5 million and $950,000 to various parties - luxury car dealer Steven Nateski, Sydney Swans chairman and merchant banker Andrew Pridham, and given to a Melbourne restaurateur to cover outstanding debts.

Both Mr Siddique and Mr Gant face four deception charges totalling more than $3 million over the alleged forgeries.

The late Whiteley, who died of a drug overdose in a NSW motel in 1992, was an Australian avant-garde artist whose works feature in all the country’s large galleries.

He was a double winner of the prestigious Archibald, Wynne and Sulman prizes, and his works routinely sell for millions. He was an Order of Australia recipient.

The court this week heard Whiteley had sold “second tier� paintings to fuel his drug habit and that the defendants’ lawyers wanted to explore the late artist’s relationship with his deceased manager, Christian Quintas.

The defence claimed Whiteley sold second-grade paintings to a “subterranean market� to finance his drug habit.

His better works were allegedly sold to art galleries for higher prices.

Yes, the ladies with fire in their eyes and yarn on their laps were on the coast to help local activists demand the closure of Anglesea’s power station.

Apparently the ladies have quite a reputation in their patch north of Melbourne for taking on local loggers.

Surf Coast Air Action said the nannas’ support left the group “touched and appreciative”.

And maybe just a little awed.

The state coaltion made the link on Monday when MP David Koch announced, amid a flurry of pre-election funding commitments, $10,000 for Oberon to develop a “sister school relationship” in Germany.

Local Liberal candidate Paula Kontelj noted the relationship might involve “study-tour opportunities”.

At the risk of seeming a sauerkraut, $10,000 would buy few return trips to Germany and, as cup day shows, the kids might struggle for funding priority.

Might be time to take on an extra paper round.

AND WITH a final update on local education spending, State Government “support” will help also train young indigenous girls in circus skills.

Apparently the Flygirl program is for 12 to 18-year-olds either out of school or “at risk of disengaging”.

Participants will learn “fun circus skills as well as respect, communication and positive relationships”.

At least after the course they won’t have to run away to join the circus – they’ll be able to apply!

POLICE are preparing a report for the Coroner following the death of man after a house fire at Norlane on Monday night.

A 49-year-old man died at The Alfred in Melbourne after being airlifted to the hospital following the fire.

He was located when fire crews extinguished the blaze, which started before 11pm.

The precise cause of the fire remains unclear but police told the Independent it was non-suspicious.

“We think it might have started on the couch,” an officer said.

Fire investigators and an arson chemist examined the scene after the blaze.

A LAND swap could keep a disused Corio school’s activity centre in public hands, according to City Hall.

Council has offered State Government land adjacent to the Flinders Peak Secondary College site in return for the centre, which would become part of a community sports facility.

WAITING lists, ambulance transfer times and emergency department performance has continued improving at Geelong Hospital, according to Victorian Health Minister David Davis.

He released figures this week showing “big improvements” at the city’s public hospital, which achieved the results despite an increase in patient admissions.

Fire fines FINES of almost $1500 face landowers of fire-danger blocks in Geelong as authorities plan to begin annual inspections in the city’s northern suburbs.

Councillor Lindsay Ellis said inspections would begin on 3 November as the CFA prepared to begin its formal fire danger period in about four weeks.

THE BEST Geelong Cup in years saw Caravan Rolls On win the $300,000 group three event before 15,000 patrons in perfect conditions.

The win, over 2400 metres, has pegged the former European stayer an extra 1.5kg for next week’s $6 million Melbourne Cup but yet to be guaranteed a berth in the event.

Fashionistas and punters mixed merrily at the cup, which police and Geelong Racing Club described as the most successful and incident-free in years.

Off-course flutters totalled around $3.5 million and on-course $800,000, while fashions on the field entries were widely described as the best outside the Melbourne Cup. “The crowd was sensational and operationally it was very successful; police and security said it was one of best ones they’ve seen,” racing club chief Daniel Salter told the Independent.

“It was a great result, no incidents and numbers totalling between 14,000 and 15,000. The fashions are improving every year, the marquees were all good.

“We’ve great feedback from all the caterers, the food was fantastic, it was a very good cup.”

Police backed the event, which one officer described as “a ripper for us”.

But for all the colour and friendly frivolity, News Corp online coverage berated the event as “Australia’s biggest bogan race day”.

News.com.au slammed brightly-coiffed Geelong Mayor Darryn Lyons, whose hairdo earned international exposure on the UK edition of The Huffington Post website. The News.com story captioned photos of Cr Lyons with expletives.

It ridiculed women’s fashions and also a welldressed elderly man snapped glancing at a woman adjusting her shoe.

Mr Salter told the Independent he had no idea why News.com.au elected to criticise the event.

“It looks like they’ve just rehashed some story from years back. I’ll be talking to them about it.”

The bizarre coverage followed the expulsion of mayoress and face of the cup Elissa Friday as a judge of the Geelong Advertiser-sponsored fashions on the field on grounds she wrote a column for the Independent.

Westfield stylist Renee Enright remained on the judging panel despite her employer’s competitor, Market Square, also sponsoring fashions on the field.

$320m farm proposal seeks delay assurance

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN THE PROPONENTS of a $320 million sustainable vegetable farm at Avalon fear state government caretaker mode could delay its planning processes.

The government goes into caretaker mode on 4 November prior to the 29 November election, shelving major decisions.

Sustainable Farms’ Andrew Rofe said Geelong’s council had requested Planning Minister Matthew Guy become the responsible authority for the development.

“Mr Guy has indicated verbally he will agree to that request but we haven’t had the formal notification yet,” Mr Rofe said.

“We’ve had a similar undertaking from shadow planning minister Brian Teague, so we know whoever wins the state election will support us.

“But Christmas is not far after the election when things slow down again, so we could face a three-month delay.

“We’re putting in a lot of dollars, so we want to make sure we have a defined timeline instead of it being open ended.

“We’d like the minister to appoint a planning panel before caretaker mode begins so at least we can continue with the planning requirements.”

Mr Rofe said a number of planning assessments were already under way.

Studies and assessments of air quality, noise, flora and fauna, cultural heritage, traffic and flood management were all “on the go”.

Mr Rofe said the Civil Aviation Safety Authority had been contacted because of the development’s proximity to Avalon Airport and a recycling

“We have to be on the ball without being ahead of ourselves. It’s a bit of a juggling act,” he said.

“The city has given us lots of support and the mayor, Darryn Lyons, and (ward councillor) Tony Ansett have been fantastic.”

Sustainable Farms proposes a hightech facility featuring the largest glasshouses in the Southern Hemisphere, using renewable energy from recycling

waste products.

The development, on a 150-hectare site off Old Melbourne Rd at Avalon, would create 1000 jobs.

Consortium partner Michael Mifsud, of Paulmar Hydroponics, said Sustainable Farms had received international interest since the Independent revealed the proposal in August.

“We’ve had expressions of interest from the aquaculture industry, adding another possibility to the way we

produce food sustainably,” Mr Mifsud said.

Paulmar Hydroponics designed and constructed its own automated hothouse system to produce the first hydroponically grown lettuce in the Southern Hemisphere.

“As leaders in hydroponics, we’ve already developed the base experience and knowledge. We just need to be able to work within the planning requirements to determine the final design.”

Coalition offers $40m promises FUNDING promises worth around $40 million ramped up the Napthine Government’s election campaign for the region this week.

A $35 million pledge for Geelong Performing Arts Centre’s redevelopment headlined the promises as the Government trumped Labor’s promises for the week and to GPAC. The coalition also promised $2.2 million to upgrade Bellarine Secondary College, $1 million to rebuild Jan Juc Surf Life Saving Club, $350,000 to extend Fyans Park Kindergarten and $140,000 for tourism promotions.

Labor’s main promise for the week was “investigating the viability” of an LPG vehicle conversion industry in Geelong.

The region is a key battleground for the major parties, with three marginal lower house seats - South Barwon, Geelong and Bellarine - up for grabs. Labor has a safe margin in the fourth seat, John Eren’s Lara.

The coalition’s GPAC promise was $5 million more than Labor’s offer for the project last month.

Premier Denis Napthine said the coalition money would pay for the next stage of redevelopment, giving GPAC a new Ryrie St façade, a 150-seat cabaret and music space, more dance studios and improved disabled access.

The project would create 270 jobs, stimulate the local economy and help GPAC secure top performers and shows, he said.

State Arts Minister Heidi Victoria said the funding would also enhance GPAC’s standing as one of the state’s premier regional arts venues.

More than 230,000 patrons attended performances at GPAC in the past financial year.

The Independent revealed in August that the facility had become “unsafe” with concrete cancer, and was unable to meet demand from the region’s growing population.

Opposition leader Daniel Andrews said the “LPG centre of excellence” in Geelong would create “high-skill, high-wage jobs for the automotive workers that the Liberals left behind”.

“The experts say we can build Victoria’s next world-leading manufacturing sector in the heart of Geelong, and Labor will help build the case.”

IT MIGHT be earmarked for a $4 billion waterside suburb but the former Cheetham saltworks at Newcomb has become a dangerous, asbestos and graffiti-riddled heritage site unsecured and open to all.

Broken fencing allows easy access for vandals to the disused site, littered with glass, timber and metal rubbish, broken concrete, bricks, rubbish, and derelict sheds and buildings.

Internal and external walls are smothered with colourful graffiti, empty spray-cans scattered across the site.

A tumbledown four-storey building is open to trespassers despite perfunctory efforts to fence it off.

Daredevil vandals have climbed to the upper reaches of the site’s most dangerous buildings to daub their tags and artistic offerings.

Abandoned and dilapidated as the site might be, if Ridley Land Corporation and Sanctuary Living have their way the site could become a new suburb, Nelson Cove, with 5000 homes, light rail, shops, restaurants, a marina and a sports training centre.

Former Ridley chairman John Murray told the Independent earlier this year the heritage issues at the saltwork complicated the company’s residential plans.

“The heritage issue is something that needs to be dealt with, whatever we do,” he said.

The saltworks, which operated for more than are century, are listed for their historic, scientific and social importance, with buildings dating to the 1920s.

Power bills ‘fall’ after tax ends SCRAPPING the carbon tax has delivered the biggest drop in electricity prices on record, according to federal MP Sarah Henderson.

The Liberal Member for Corangamite said the fall for the September quarter was the largest since 1980 when Australian Bureau of Statistics began measuring electricity prices for its inflation index.

Ms Henderson confirmed “significant” price reductions in Corangamite and up to 12.4 per

“There are likely to be further flow on benefits of lower electricity prices on the cost of other goods and services over the coming quarter,” she said.

“The figures confirm that scrapping the carbon tax is delivering real and immediate cost of living relief to Australian families.”

Ms Henderson said electricity prices rose 101 per cent under Labor.

“We’ve scrapped Labor’s carbon tax to deliver relief to Australian families and businesses. The coalition is committed to lower electricity prices for Australian families.

“Bill Shorten wants to take away these savings with his plan to bring back the carbon tax.”

Federal Labor Member for Corio Richard Marles hit back with an attack on the Abbott Government’s budget.

“If the Liberal government is serious about helping reduce the cost of living for people they can start by dumping their toxic budget of broken promises and new taxes, including their proposed GP tax and fuel tax,” he said.

Ms Henderson also called

on the region’s councils to pass on carbon tax savings to ratepayers.

“In the case of the City of Greater Geelong, the council received a very substantial windfall of more than $500,000 just in landfill fees. I once again call on the City to confirm the savings that have been accrued as a result of the carbon tax abolition and whether these savings will

be passed back to ratepayers, as other councils have done.”

Council city services general manager Gary Van Driel said City Hall was considering projects to provide “a carbon offset (that) could be funded with the monies collected in relation to the former carbon tax”.

Mr Van Driel said a report was being prepared for council’s consideration “regarding the allocation of the carbon tax liability funds to nominated projects”.

TEACHER training is set to be “revolutionised” under a new teaching academy pioneered at Deakin University.

Associate Professor Damien Blake said Geelong’s new Teaching Academy of Professional Practice (TAPP) would attract international attention.

“We’ve been piloting them for a number of years and worked closely with state government to develop the concept,” Prof Blake said.

“The Geelong academy is quite large, involving 31 schools across the region, including primary and secondary schools.

“It offers a much more collaborative approach to preparing teachers to teach in schools and provides the basis to make significant systemic changes to teacher education.”

State Education Minister

Martin Dixon this week announced $1.6 million in funding for 12 new academies across Victoria.

Prof Blake said the academy would operate as a partnership between schools, Deakin and the Department of Education.

“This marks a huge leap forward in teacher training,” he said.

“There were a lot of flaws in the previous model because there was little collaboration across thousands of pre-service teachers and hundreds of schools.

“Under the academy model, teachers will be in schools earlier as part of their preparation to be teacher.

“Teachers might do units embedded in a school, spending time as a resident, getting to know their fellow teachers, the community and students to build genuine relationships.”

City splashing out with pools

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN GEELONG households made a splash with the third highest number of pool permits in Victoria last year, according to new figures.

Victorian Building Authority (VBA) said the region had 316 pool or spa permits issued, behind only Boroondara and Mornington Peninsula with 491 each.

But the VBA warned that the higher popularity of pools also posed an increased risk of drownings.

Mr Edwards said pool or spa owners failing to comply risked fines over $7300.

Pool gates should never be propped open and nearby trees or other objects that could provide access over fencing should be removed, he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The VBA is writing to pool and spa retailers and working with the Swimming Pool and Spa Association (SPASA) to ensure retailers understand pool safety regulations and explain the requirements to their customers.â&#x20AC;?

Rent debts ‘lift homelessness’

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN GEELONG community services have experienced a 94 per cent increase in tenants at risk of homelessness because of rental arrears, a new report reveals.

The Justice Connect report identified strong links between homelessness, financial hardship, family violence and legal issues in Geelong.

The report said falling into homelessness from private rental was common.

“Seventy per cent of consumers who were experiencing homelessness had become homeless from private rental,” the report said.

“Where consumers owned a vehicle, they had spent at least a few nights and sometimes months, living in their vehicles due to a lack of alternative accommodation.

“Clients presenting at homelessness services in Geelong have predominantly been living in private rental premises.”

yer Lucy Adams said the report was based on consultations with 40 workers from specialist homelessness and community services and 10 homeless people.

“The findings won’t come as a surprise to people working on the ground in Geelong,” Ms Adams said.

“The report highlights an acute shortage of affordable housing in Geelong, and points to family violence, family breakdown and financial hardship as key triggers of local homelessness.”

Ms Adams said some services reported a 50 per cent increase in family violence referrals in recent years.

Ninety-four per cent of services staff had assisted clients whose tenancies were at risk because of rental arrears, she said.

“The consultation showed that the lines between housing issues and legal issues are blurred, with financial hardship and family violence often causing both housing failure and legal problems.”

Ms Adams said 80 per cent of consumers identified at least one

legal issue since becoming homeless and three quarters of them had multiple legal issues.

But accessing legal services was often difficult because of capacity restraints and a lack of clarity about which services to approach about different legal issues.

Ms Adams said representatives of legal, community, local government, university and corporate sectors met at a recent forum to improve collaboration between legal and non-legal services.

“Early access to legal assistance can often prevent evictions into homelessness,” Ms Adams said.

“Often it is a one-off crisis causing people to fall behind in rent but with early intervention they can get back on track.

“We’re hoping that a better understanding of homelessness will lead to businesses and organisations involved developing better ways of dealing with it when they do come across it.”

“We’re looking to move to a new site. We’ve been looking at numerous sites, looking at rental sites, but there’s no quick fix.

“We’ve been in talks with the council and looking at new sites with it and, yes, we plan on moving but it’s not that easy. There could be new rules and new sites but, yes, we’re working with the council and, yes, we’re planning to move.

“You can only imagine the calls I’ve been getting.”

Ms Hinge said in the meantime she was counting more than 30 trucks an hour and up to 110 between 9pm and 2am.

She cited slush, mud and dust from the trucks, plus financial loss trying to glaze windows against the racket, as additional problems for residents.

“Nothing stops the noise.

We’ve been told they might move, that they’re looking for a new site in Heales Rd, but there’s no indication of that happening soon.”

Residents have asked City Hall to cut the speed limit from 80 to 60km/h along McClelland Ave, fearing trucks could collide with cars in adverse traffic conditions.

Strike hits city

By NOEL MURPHY CITY Hall is threatening to cut staff wages over legitimate work bans as they chase a new pay agreement, according to their union. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Since last week, council was given the appropriate notice of when bans would commence yet our members have come under attack by management,â&#x20AC;? said Australian Services Union (ASU) organiser Melissa Wainwright. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It included a group of employees being told by their manager that if they participated they would remain in the depot yards all day. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Other comments from the HR department surround docking peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pay and identifying union members by asking who would participate and what bans

they would be implementing.â&#x20AC;?

The ASU described City Hallâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s offer â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a 10 per cent rise over three years plus other improved benefits and conditions â&#x20AC;&#x201C; as â&#x20AC;&#x153;substandardâ&#x20AC;? and accused council of â&#x20AC;&#x153;intimidatingâ&#x20AC;? members. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Why does council believe ASU members should be threatened, sent home or have details of the bans theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re participating in documented and sent to payroll for processing of deductions?â&#x20AC;?

Ms Wainwright said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is a violation of our membersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; rights.â&#x20AC;?

The bans include issuing infringements and invoices, accepting rates payments, responding to emails, mowing parks and reserves, cleaning selected public toilets and open spaces and emptying bins.

City Hall said only 310 of about 2600 employees had voted to take protected action.

Organisation development manager Andrew Keen said the City was trying to clarify the nature of the â&#x20AC;&#x153;periodicâ&#x20AC;? bans. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is... important to clearly understand the bans so the city can maintain workplace and community safety and to minimise disruption to council services,â&#x20AC;?

Mr Keen said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Unfortunately, this clarity has not been forthcoming and council is still unaware of the exact nature and timing of the bans.â&#x20AC;?

Mr Keen said council would continue trying to negotiate with the ASU but most staff would like an opportunity to vote on the proposed agreement.

Biotech award

A GEELONG cloud-based biosecurity system has won a major innovation award.

Aglive’s world-first agricultural system won the Telstra Technology and Innovation Award at renowned Elmore Field Days.

Aglive co-founder Stewart McConachy said the IntegriData system enabled farm managers to trace all inputs and outputs at their properties.

“The system tracks inputs such as chemicals and farm merchandise. You could scan the barcode of a vaccine, calibrate the dose rate, read the livestock tag and the process is electronically attached to that animal,” Mr McConachy explained.

The company was also working on systems to trace outputs

such as livestock, hay and grain, he said.

“We’re developing a program to be able to monitor grain from the paddock right through the supply chain, meaning grain can be identified to within two metres of its final destination.

“Biosecurity and marketing are two obvious benefits but the system could also provide important information for consumers wanting to know more about the origin of their food.”

Aglive was also developing SpraySafe, allowing for chemical traceability through an online mapping solution.

Mr McConachy said the system would allow farmers to track the plume, or drift, of chemicals in a map format over two to three days.

“SpraySafe will measure data

such as wind direction and speed, temperature, flow rate, chemical details and much more to provide a complete record of spray operations.

“It really is an exciting time for Australian agriculture, with the rapid development and growth of technology. Modern mobile devices, cloud computing and spatial data provides an environment for information and communication technology solutions not available 10 years ago.”

Mr McConachy said the company was working with Meat and Livestock Australia to develop an electronic national vendors declaration form for producers.

“We’re also hoping to develop fruit, vegetable and farm fingerprinting, including a microfluidic device for DNA sampling, meaning greater food safety and improved biosecurity.”

Corangamite Catchment Management Authority ran the Waterwatch forum.

They tested water quality and built their own filtration systems out of recycled materials as part of the the Waterwatch forum.

The event aimed to help secondary students involved in Waterwatch monitoring to improve their understanding of the role of water and river systems.

Sacred Heart teacher Dave Campbell said the students enjoyed participating in Waterwatch.

“Collecting real data helps link the classroom to factors in the outside world,” he said.

“We’re looking forward to hearing from experts in the field as well as doing hands-on activities at the National Water Week Youth Forum.”

The Princes Fwy camera system snapped 15,563 drivers between April and June, issuing $3.3 million in fines, compared to the March quarter when 19,386 were fined $4.1 million.

However, Geelong and Melbourne-bound cameras at Forsyth Rd Bridge, Point Cook, were among the top 10 for fines.

Another Norlane intersection, at Sparks Rd and Princes Hwy, also recorded fewer offences and fines. The June quarter had 663 speeding drivers fined a total $150,574, compared with 805 slugged $203,526 in the previous three months.

Batty set to speak out in Geelong

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN FAMILY violence campaigner Rosie Batty will speak in Geelong next month as part of a Barwon Month of Action.

Ms Batty became a campaigner after her former partner killed their son, Luke, at cricket training in Melbourne’s south-east earlier this year.

She was prominent in the news this week when she spoke emotionally at a coroner’s inquest into her son’s death.

Ms Batty has been nominated as a Victorian finalist in the Australian of the Year award.

She will share her story at Zonta Club of Geelong to support its “stop men’s violence against

women” campaign and the Luke Batty Foundation.

Aussie parents give teens grog AUSTRALIAN-BORN parents are more likely than migrants to supply their teens with booze, according to new Geelong research.

Deakin University’s Dr Bosco Rowland and his team also found that when both parents were born in Australia every bottle shop in their area doubled the likelihood they would supply alcohol to their teenagers.

But families with two migrant parents were less likely to supply booze to their teens unless they lived in areas with many restaurants and licensed cafes.

The study found that 55 per cent of the 10,000 teenagers involved in the research consumed alcohol in the previous 12 months.

Thirty-four per cent of them said their parents supplied the alcohol.

“Under-age drinking continues to be a problem in Australia, with many parents still finding it difficult to set firm rules around not providing or condoning alcohol consumption before their children turn 18,” said Dr Rowland, an Alfred Deakin Postdoctoral Research Fellow with Deakin’s School of Psychology, based at Waurn Ponds.

“The study findings raise the question of why licensed restau-

Dr Rowland said the different findings for Australian-born and migrant families aligned with the different cultural conventions toward youth alcohol use.

“Australian-born parents tend to be more aware that youth alcohol use is common, so living near lots of bottleshops may make them more pessimistic that they can prevent their adolescent obtaining alcohol. This may lead them to supply alcohol at home in the hope this will encourage moderate youth alcohol use.

“The migrant families tend to be more successful at discouraging adolescent alcohol use. However, when they live near licensed restaurants and cafes they are likely to witness other children being served alcohol by their parents and this role-modelling may lead them to adopt similar practices.”

National Health and Medical Research Council guidelines recommend against children drinking before 18.

“These guidelines need to be promoted, as many parents believe that providing alcohol to their child to take to parties or drink at a meal is more responsible than restricting them from consuming alcohol – this is not the case,” Dr Rowland said.

“The evidence these guidelines are based upon show that the earlier a young person starts drinking alcohol the more likely they are to experience injuries and harms, poor academic outcomes and possibly impaired brain development.

“In the long-term there are also links with a variety of cancers and diseases and a greater chance the child will drink at harmful levels in adulthood. These are good reasons for children to avoid alcohol before the age of 18.”

ON 29 JANUARY 2013 Geelong’s council resolved to develop a comprehensive integrated transport strategy.

On 14 October 2014 I was delighted to approve and adopt the strategy, along with my fellow councillors, particularly after commuting between home and work on the Princess Fwy and West Gate Bridge for the past 16 years.

The unanimous vote on the strategy demonstrated its importance for our city and region.

All councillors openly supported the strategy and the absolute need for state and federal governments to prioritise East-West Link, particularly its alternative river crossing to the West Gate Bridge. Councillors collectively reinforced the need for East-West Link to improve active transport, private vehicle trips and freight between Geelong and Melbourne.

Even more pleasing is that the state Coalition Government has announced an investment of $8 billion to $10 billion in East-West Link’s western section and $6 billion to $8 billion for East-West Link’s eastern Section.

Adding the productivity improvements and the thousands of jobs directly-created makes this major infrastructure an immensely-positive game-changer for Victoria and our economy.

How state Labor could vow to tear up East-West Link contracts should the party be elected is beyond reason and in opposition to one of the major actions in City of Greater Geelong’s integrated transport strategy.

GARY Oraniuk (Letters, 17 October) made an important point: paid jobs are indeed vital in the longer-term for the unemployed, particularly, the younger unemployed.

That should be the focus of all tiers of government.

However, in the interim, what is the problem with requiring the younger unemployed to offer their services to community and charitable organisations on a volunteer basis as a “contra” for the financial support they receive from the taxpayer while looking for or training for a job?

I have known of many such people who have eventually secured employment precisely because demonstrated a work ethic, albeit without being paid.

Should such a praiseworthy ethic not be encouraged?

DOUBLE Take noted that bureaucrats and business types were querying opposition to a Yarra Street Pier, then invited readers to speculate why (Independent, 17 October).

There’s no need for speculation because there are no shades of grey.

Daily press commentary has consistently railed against Mayor Darryn Lyons’ vision and out-of-hand rejection of the all-but-lemon alternative.

The opposition came to a head when Cruise Down Under’s Stephen Brad reportedly said passengers were more likely to take tours and spend money away from the CBD, only to note two days later that they had previously patronised the city’s gallery, wool museum, botanic gardens, walking tours, cafes and restaurants.

Then City of Greater Geelong chief executive officer Gillian Miles, to her credit, dismissed hearsay as hard evidence in stating that plans to get the pier market-ready would proceed.

AGED CARE

IN THE infrastructure debate one thing is certain: Geelong has always been short-changed.

The major Victorian parties are falling over themselves throwing money at anything their opponents have yet to consider.

Money for schools? Of course, especially at election time!

For sports facilities? How much will it take?

The problem is that this use of taxpayer dollars is the business of government. These monies should have been rationally allocated years ago, not in the past four months of a four-year term – and there should be lots more of it.

Australia’s two-party system promotes shortterm thinking; winning at any cost to principle in a bunker mentality making the person sitting opposite you your enemy.

The casualty in this combat is vision. Down in the bunker it’s hard to see the light, so Victorians get an unelected Premier driving a tunnel east and west from his bunker; one we were not given a chance to vote on.

The cost? Thousands of millions of dollars.

Enough to kill off infrastructure spending in the regions for many years to come.

The last state budget made it clear: infrastructure spending per head of population in Victoria is outrageously skewed toward Melbourne. Geelong get millions, Melbourne gets billions.

It’s time this farce ended. Readers must tell politicians that regional Victoria wants its fair share.

Jobs in renewables, not gas I AM PROUD to live in Geelong thanks to council’s decision to respond positively to the expertise and views of people who made submissions about local onshore gas extraction, or fracking.

Not only did council clearly reject it, councillors also proactively voted to take their decision to state and federal governments with the intention of replacing fossil fuel-based energy sources with renewable ones.

In my view this is where jobs and business opportunities lie, alongside care for environment.

Think of the children AT A TIME when the rest of the world is embracing clean energy, Victoria is missing out on a chance to participate in exciting emerging global technologies.

Victoria has a unique opportunity to pursue investment in solar and wind technologies but instead continues to support outdated 20th Century fossil fuel-extraction industries.

Victoria has wind and sun in abundance but is being left behind by Europe, the USA and even other Australian states and territories.

The Victorian Government made this abundantly clear when it withdrew support for the 20 per cent emission reductions target within its own Climate Change Act by pushing for the reduction of the Federal Renewable Energy Target (RET) and considering gas as a renewable energy source in submission to the RET review panel.

The effects of climate change are real, our fossil fuel resources are finite and almost spent.

Overwhelmingly, Victoria’s greenhouse emissions emanate from our coal-fired power stations, so shouldn’t a responsible government be investing in our future?

Our kids at least deserve this.

IT’S NOT so much a changing of the guard as a return to duty at White Eagle House.

Jodie Armstrong, the head chef at the popular Breakwater outlet, is back in the kitchen, offering a revamped menu that is attracting new faces and the return of many of old-time regulars.

“I had a four-year break but I’m back now with my mother Lyn Lunn as my business partner, we’ve made quite a few changes and customers are responding positively to them and we are getting busier and busier,” Jodie said.

“We’re gearing up for the summer season, it’s a fresh season and fresh is what we are all about. We do not pre-prepare, all our produce is fresh, the customers know that and that is why they keep coming back in numbers.”

Well-known as a familyfriendly venue, Jodie is making it even more inclusive, especially on burger themed nights.

“Coming into summer we always see a surge in requests for burgers, so we’re inviting customers to define their own burgers and what they want on them.

It will be interesting to see what they come up with,” Jodie said.

The German car specialist made its own road trip recently in a short move along Autumn St to a revamped workshop, which will be the business’s new headquarters.

General manager Ben Buckle says German Automotive always tries to improve its service to customers.

“While the move from 43 to 8 Autumn St, in Geelong West, might not be much in distance it has allowed us to upgrade and expand our workshop, fitting it out with the best equipment available,” he says.

The German Automotive team specialises in European brands, specifically Volkswagen, Mercedes Benz, Audi and Skoda.

“We’re set up to dealer standard for these brands and take great pride in meeting the needs of our customers who have come to rely on us over the years,” Ben says.

“We’ve invested heavily in both training and state-of-the-art equipment and two of our staff recently returned from training overseas. This allows us to work on current models with no effect on manufacturer’s warranty at all.”

The team at German Automotive uses genuine parts sourced from European suppliers and seeks customer authorisation before proceeding with any major repairs.

The workshop is equipped with dealer-standard diagnostic equipment to quickly track down any vehicle problems.

Ben and the team are very proud of the new German Automotive premises and invite all customers – new and existing – to visit the new facilities.

IndySport Cats on the hunt in Frankston GEELONG Cricket Club came out of last weekend’s double-header on even terms, going down to Melbourne on Saturday before bouncing back with a much-needed win over Dandenong on Sunday.

Skipper Matthew Harrison (69) led the way on Saturday in his side’s pursuit of 274 but, with little support, the Cats lost by 98 runs.

With their season slipping away before their eyes on Sunday when Dandenong posted a very competitive 249, the mood was glum.

But Eamon Vines stood up when it counted to record a magnificent 119 as the Cats won by three wickets with seven balls to spare.

Geelong travels to Frankston tomorrow for a one-day match. Both sides have just one win to their name and will be desperate to get back in the hunt.

So far this season both sides have been in good form, although North Geelong did suffer a shock loss to Bell Post Hill last week after falling five runs short in a disappointing chase.

As in previous years, St Joseph’s looks to have

more depth, while the Magpies rely on too much from too few.

Big snapper keeping local anglers busy around the bay and offshore On the

FINE settled weather over the past week allowed anglers to put in some productive sessions, with most seeking solid snapper high.

Michael Kennedy and son Lachlan ventured down to the jetty at the grammar school lagoon. After a short wait Lachlan was hooked up to fast-running fish, which turned out to be a snapper of around 2kg and Lachlan’s first catch of the species.

Mark Ikstrums headed wide off St Leonards where he set a spread of baits and sat back in hope of tanking with some quality snapper. A fish soon nailed one of the baits, with Mark landing the 9kg fish after a torrid tussle.

Shaun Wall targeted snapper off Clifton Springs on Saturday night near the area known as the turn.

He managed to drop his first couple of fish but hooked up the last, a 7.2kg fish that put up an awesome fight.

Dalibor Smek and brother-in-law Tim Paps fished the outer harbour on the weekend, anchoring up after finding some fish on the sounder. Soon after rods began screaming under the weight of quality snapper, with the pair catching bag limits of fish between 6kg and 8kg on large pilchards.

Calamari continued making their presence felt right around the Bellarine Peninsula. Fishing World’s Michael Moore headed out with mate Ben McLean to try their luck around Queenscliff where the boys caught 19 squid over a couple of hours, especially on jigs including the Gancraft 3.5 in colour #30 and the Yamashita in R25.

Anglers also reported good bags of squid from St Leonards right around to Clifton Springs. As the season progresses over the next couple of months anglers will continue to see their catches of squid increase.

The settled weather over the weekend coaxed anglers offshore to target snapper and gummy shark.

the more productive areas, producing snapper to 6kg and gummies to 15kg among anglers’ bags.

School shark to 15kg were also taken.

The various styles of flasher rigs available were the most successful, particularly in sizes 4/0 to 6/0.

When conditions allow the best way to target these fish is to anchor up and lower a burley pot or bag to the bottom near rigs baited with fresh barracouta, salmon or slimy mackerel, all of which have accounted for quality fish.

Anglers drifting in the same area also latched onto some quality tiger flathead to 2kg.

Slimy mackerel nudging 2kg were taken on Sabiki rigs, providing a great tussle on light line as well as an ideal live or fresh cut bait The Sheepwash area at Barwon Heads was standing room-only as anglers got stuck into the small salmon that invaded the river. Silver trevally to 45cm were also a feature in the same area, where pippies and pilchard fillets were the most successful baits.

This is a great area to take children fishing because it provides safe access to the water as well as plenty of open space for them to run around.

On the freshwater scene, Brian Long fished the Barwon River around Queen’s Park Golf Club where massive schools of redfin eagerly chased down his lures. Many of the fish were small but Brian still managed a couple of reddies nudging 1kg.

Small hard-bodied minnows in red and Fish Arrow soft plastics were his standout lures.

Lake Bullen Merri remained closed to fishing due to an algae bloom but anglers who opted for Lake Purrumbete had reasonable success on brown trout while trolling Daiwa Double Clutch lures in 30m with downriggers set at 25m.

Redfin also became more active as the water warmed, with ice jigs the most productive method of targeting them.

Anyone looking for a fun day out with the family should try the annual Ron Nelson Memorial Junior Fishing Clinic at Deakin University, Pigdons Rd, Waurn Ponds, this Sunday.
