Prizes encourage Christmas cheer in the city Big-business school: PRIZES for Christmas windows will encourage traders to make central Geelong a festive season wonderland this year.

The Independent will give away weekly $1000 advertising packages to the business whose window wins the most public votes on the Indy’s Facebook page.

A gallery of shop windows will be posted each week, with readers encouraged to ‘like’ their favourite. The window with the most likes will win the weekly prize.

The competition will conclude with a Mayor’s Choice award of advertising worth $2500.

To enter, traders can begin sending pictures of their windows to editorial@geelongindependent.com.au on 3 November.

The first weekly winner will be revealed on 14 November and the Mayor’s Choice on 12 December.

The Independent is offering the prizes in support of Central Geelong Marketing’s Christmas Window Competition.

The competition will build on the excitement of the Myer Christmas Windows coming to Geelong for the first time this year, which the Independent revealed in August.

A free visual merchandising workshop will show city centre traders how to dress windows for Christmas.

Registrations for the workshop, at City Hall from 1pm to 2pm on 29 October, are available by emailing trainingexcellence@geelongcity.vic.gov.au Mayor Darryn Lyons urged city traders to get on board.

“The Christmas windows will be a drawcard for shoppers to take a closer look and bring more people into stores.

It’s something we haven’t done previously, which is why I’m really excited about Christmas this year.

“Come on, Geelong, let’s show everyone we’re the best Christmas town in Australia.”

Geelong P-TECH coming, says PM

GEELONG will host Australia’s first school involving big business and industry in the education curriculum, Federal Government has announced.

The Government has allocated the Pathways in Technology Early College High School program $500,000 in seed funding.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott said Geelong was well-placed to host the first “P-TECH”.

Mr Abbott said the technologyfocussed schools were successful overseas, particularly in the United States.

“You’ve got businesses such as IBM sponsoring these schools, putting in a bit of money, putting in a lot of expertise and generally mentoring and helping the students, so we think this model has potential applicability to Australia and why not start the first of them in Geelong?”

A Department of Education fact sheet said the P-TECH model would align secondary classes in science, technology, engineering

and mathematics (STEM) with associate degrees in applied science.

“Working in partnership with school leaders, employers would be actively involved in the design and delivery of learning and young people will have identified pathways to employment with the school’s industry partners,” the fact sheet said.

“In the Australian context, and for the purposes of the initial trial, existing school, vocational and tertiary qualifications would be used.

“The initial P-TECH educational facility would reflect key elements of the US model, including strong leadership, collaboration, curriculum design and industry mentoring and support.”

Federal Member for Corangamite Sarah Henderson was “delighted” by the announcement.

“This pilot will help develop the next generation of innovators and job-ready graduates,” Ms Henderson said.

“In partnership with the Victorian Government, establishing a P-TECH pilot here would be so positive for our region.”

ANYONE with outstanding fines might like to stay clear of Royal Geelong Show this weekend.

As of 3pm yesterday, sheriff’s officers had identified 20 people at the show with 213 outstanding fines collectively worth $48,000.

“It’s disappointing so many people continue to ignore their fines and let the situation spiral out of control,” said Sheriff of Victoria’s Brendan Facey.

“The best option is for people to pay their fines on time to avoid extra fees and the potential for further sanctions.”

As if the rides and show bags don’t cost enough already.

GEELONG Cats fans by and large are none the wiser after up-and-comer Allen ‘Bundy’ Christensen’s surprise flight to Brisbane during the AFL trade period.

“Personal reasons” were often cited and Christensen himself declined to talk about it when introduced to the media after the deal had been done.

A VIGOROUS against plans for a new Yarra Street Pier has Geelong bureaucrats and business types alike scratching their heads.

After all, it’s the first time in recent memory a job-creating proposal of such benign environmental

or social consequence has faced such blow-back.

It’s not like docking cruise ships threatens the orange-bellied parrot.

And the proponents are trying to milk state and federal governments for the lion’s share of funding.

So what’s the motive behind the loud but singletent-size opposition?

A GEELONG councillor gave an interesting insight ahead of this week’s vote on the controversial gas-extraction process of “fracking”.

Said councillor was aware of scientific studies clearing the practice of contaminating groundwater overseas.

Its benefits to the economy of the US, about to become a net fossil fuel exporter, were also noted, as well as the impact of rising gas prices, But the councillor observed that the overwhelming opposition to fracking was well-populated with members wearing “foil hats”.

So council voted against “onshore gas extraction”.

And the fossil fuel industry was, er, foiled.

Airport taking off with $7.2m upgrade project

By NOEL MURPHY A NEW $7.2 MILLION development at Barwon Heads Airport will help secure increasing business through Geelong’s chief general aviation facility.

A sealed runway and improved drainage works to be built next month at a cost of around $700,000 will overcome long-standing problems with wet weather.

The airport’s owners and its commercial operators will spend another $6.5 million over the next three years on new planes, buildings and facilities to drive the Barwon Head Rd precinct to a new level of enterprise.

The airport hosts general aviation,

charter flights, flight training, parachuting, aerobatic and historic warbird flights, with business ramping up in recent years after the closure of the former Geelong Airport at Grovedale to make way for Armstrong Creek development.

“We have lots of people coming into Barwon Heads, it’s big business Geelong,” said airport spokesman Mr Jeff Brooks.

“When you have a goat track runway that’s wet in winter, covered in water, people can’t get into Geelong.

We have people flying in from Wagga Wagga, Hamilton, Canberra, Griffith, Mildura, all coming to Geelong to do business.

“We even have a lot of golf travellers, people flying in and out to play golf here or on King Island.”

Aviation Minister Gordon RichPhillips is set to formally announce State Government funding for the runway and drainage works tomorrow.

Mr Brooks said the works should take about four months from November, leaving the airport in peak new condition for summer.

“The main thing, really, is fixing the drainage. It’s been a problem, with heavy rain water just sitting there and closing the airport.

“We’re fixing the drainage and relaying the structural base for the run-

way. It will be a proper tarmac, an allweather landing strip.

“Concurrent with that is $6.5 million spending by commercial operators and owners over the next three years on new aircraft and structures at the airport.”

The Barwon Heads upgrade comes as Lethbridge Airport undergoes a similar upgrade, with million-dollar backing from Spring St, and as Avalon Airport cuts fees in a bid to lure general aviation.

Mr Brooks said Lethbridge was complementary to Barwon Heads.

Lethbridge management has told the Independent likewise of Avalon’s general services.

Gas blocked GEELONG’S council will seek a permanent ban on tapping the region’s reserves of onshore gas after receiving 447 submissions against it, particularly though hydraulic “fracking”.

Councillors voted this week to instead seek state and federal support for renewable energy to replace fossil fuels for heating, cooling and power.

Firefighters honoured MORE than 100 Barwon South West region firefighters have received National Emergency Medals for fighting Victoria’s devastating 2009 bushfires.

MP David Koch said the CFA members “worked hard and fought bravely to protect lives and property during an extremely difficult campaign”.

Schools closer TWO new schools are on the way to Torquay and North Geelong, Liberal party figures announced this week.

South Barwon MP Andrew Katos and Lara candidate Tony McManus said the Napthine Government had sought expressions of interest to build the Torquay North Primary and North Geelong Special Development schools.

Blocks free GEELONG’S council will proceed with giving away Ocean Grove blocks worth around $1 million after a councillor lost his bid to have the decision reversed.

Councillors voted against Stretch Kontelj’s proposal to sell the four residential lots, instead recommitting to give the land to a disabled-accommodation provider.

ROYAL Geelong Show enjoyed a flying start to its 2014 program yesterday, with racing pigs and cooking demonstrations - not necessarily connected - entertaining patrons on day one.

A large turnout foretold a bumper weekend, with warm sunny weather expected for most of the four-day event.

The biggest four-day show in country Victoria features monster trucks and moto-X events in the main arena along with the traditional fireworks.

Yesterday’s activities included the launch of more than 40 competitions, with categories including beef and dairy cattle, dogs, sheep, poultry, fleece, art, craft and needlework, woodchop and shearing.

Roving entertainment as well as local music stalwarts Wayne Jury and Michael Stangel will keep the masses tapping their toes.

Sideshow alley will attract its usual teen crowds while for the tots Harry’s Bendigo Bank Farmyard operates every day.

Mums and dads will enjoy the local gourmet produce and boutique wines.

Big Marty defies injury to aim for Paralympics

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN AS A MAN previously defined by his fitness and physical presence, a debilitating permanent leg injury was an eye-opener for Ocean Grove's Marty Jackson.

Nicknamed ‘Nastee’, Marty was a gridiron warrior, fighting it out in the trenches, taking hits and delivering them with equal ferocity.

But a misplaced opponent's helmet hit to the left leg cut short the career of the founder of Geelong’s successful Buccaneers gridiron team.

Nerve damage left the leg dangling almost useless below the knee, even with the support of a cumbersome brace.

“I’ve done myself a bit of mischief,” the 36-year-old said understatedly.

“It was a freak accident that basically paralysed my leg below the knee.

But that’s the cards you're dealt.

“There’s no point in sulking. You just keep moving forward.

“I’m not one to sit around, anyway - I get bored,” he laughed.

Such was Marty's gusto to regain his physicality that he began upperbody workouts when doctors expected him bedridden or at least confined to an armchair.

The workouts inspired Marty to take up discus, shotput and javelin, putting his naturally robust chest and arm strength to good use.

At the first opportunity he contacted Australian Paralympic Committee about qualifying for the Brazil Olympics.

He is now registered with the Para-

lympics' high-performance committee and awaiting his classification, which he believed would be S44 for singleleg below-knee amputations or nerve damage.

“I’m quite muscular at 104kg because I’ve done weightlifting for 20 years. I was squatting 300 kg before this,” Marty explained.

“I’ve gone from the top of my game and have to start again at the bottom.

“It’s a completely new technique.

It’s like, ‘Wow, here I go again, I’m the new guy’.”

Marty has sought inspiration from Paralympians like Kelly Cartwright, Richard Colman and Tim Matthews.

The experience also opened his eyes to people's changed perceptions of him.

“I suppose it's human nature because I walk like I have cerebral palsy but people look at me funny and you realise what people with disabilities go through daily.”

Marty’s gridiron team mates have started a fundraising appeal to get him back on his feet.

Teammate Glenn Gattellaro said Marty had devoted his life to helping friends and family while contributing to the community.

“Marty isn’t after sympathy but I reckon it's only fair for people to have the opportunity to give back to such a great bloke who has done so much for so many.

“By raising funds Marty will be able to purchase a leg apparatus along with medication, physio and rehabilitation.”

Red tape cuts to ‘boost city area’

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN CITY HALL’S streamlined planning process will help stimulate development in Geelong’s central activity area, believes Market Square manager Sandy Kelly-Burton.

Ms Kelly-Burton was one of the first applicants to benefit from the new system to cut red tape for faster permits.

Market Square sought an amendment to an existing permit for a veranda on Malop St to accommodate a new retailer, which would have previously taken up to 12 weeks.

“It wasn’t a hugely significant change but our permit was approved in four weeks, enabling us to immediately go to the next stage and implement leasing agreement sooner,” Ms Kelly-Burton said.

“We were pleased with the process, planning staff were happy with what we presented and we didn’t have to have a meeting because all the relevant information was there.

“It all has time, resource and financial implications and it means this local retailer will be opening and earning sooner than we thought.”

Ms Kelly-Burton said the program would have a positive economic benefit on the city centre.

“We talk to a lot of potential commercial tenants and leasing agents who are becoming more supportive of the future direction of the central city area. As more residents come into the city that will improve.”

Skilling Australia Foundation head Nicholas Wyman said the concept positively addressed issues facing young people transitioning from school to work.

Mr Wyman said the program would equip students with skills for 21st Century workplaces, such as critical thinking and working in teams.

Mr Wyman said Skilling Australia was “instrumental in paving the way for Mr Abbott’s visit to the first P-TECH at Brooklyn in June.

The model would help solve the two nagging Australian problems of high youth unemployment and a scarcity of middle-skilled workers, he said.

THE great Aussie drive-in theatre tradition is all about car-boot smuggling, deckchairs and ugg boots – even lounge suites, says Geelong fine arts student Tiesha Ita-Ulima.

Nostalgia about Geelong’s former Moolap drive-in drove her on an ambitious project culminating in an exhibition dubbed True Lies and Superfictions, opening at Deakin University’s Waterfront campus tonight.

With a small team of fellow students, Ms ItaUlima created an artistic version of the drive-in, complete with movie screen, ticketbox, old images, paperwork, speakers and project management documents and plans – even a community petition for a hypothetical restoration.

“It’s about drawing attention to things in an ambiguous way but also in a way that makes people believe it when it’s not necessarily true,” she explained.

The exercise allocated the drive-in team a mock budget of $10 million for a new facility.

“We have a whole mock drive-in with cars and all. Instead of speakers we have iPads,” Ms Ita-Ulima said.

“My part of the project was to buy back the site and redevelop it. I had to get all the original documents and assess the impacts on the community when those kind of iconic features are taken away.

“As kids in pyjamas, I remember carloads turning up with lounge suites, deck chairs, ugg boots. We’ve recreated that nostalgia.”

The exhibition opens at the Waterfront campus Project Space on the corner of Western Beach Rd and Cunningham St.

Call to expand free wi-fi in region

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN FREE public wi-fi could be rolled out across Geelong if councillor Rod Macdonald has his way.

Whittington became the latest connected suburb this week, adding to wi-fi already accessible on Geelong’s waterfront, city area and parts of Belmont.

“I’d like to see it rolled out across all suburbs, focussing on activity areas like parks and shop-

ping centres,” Cr Macdonald said.

“It attracts people into those areas, helps with passive surveillance and consequently there’s a reduction in graffiti and anti-social behaviour.”

Whittington Link Reserve has free public wi-fi after this week’s launch.

The initiative is part of a Communities Accessing Technology project, part of the City Hall’s

Cr Macdonald said free public wi-fi was important for residents.

“With so much business, education and social interaction done via the internet, it’s critical everyone has knowledge of and can access the web.”

Fifty-four per cent of Whittington households were connected to the internet, Cr Macdonald said.

Chocolate jobs for ocean road

By NOEL MURPHY A CHOCOLATE factory at Bellbrae has moved a step closer to reality after earning Surf Coast Shire planning department approval.

The department said the Elkington Rd chocolaterie would create almost 60 jobs and make gourmet, centred and truffle-type chocolates as well as choc bars and moulded chocolate eggs and animals.

Permit green light for expected tourist magnet The business would have a cafe serving a range of chocolatethemed foods.

The facility was tipped to become a tourist destination in its own right.

The Great Ocean Road Chocolaterie and Ice Creamery will be based on a similar project the same company opened in Yarra Glen two years ago and which

now has 450,000 visitors a year.

The Bellbrae facility would use imported chocolates combined with produce, herbs and fruit, some of it grown at the site.

The committee set conditions it deemed would address 16 objections lodged on amenity, traffic, environmental and competition grounds.

A shire report said proposals that create tourism destinations away from the beach were “important in the economic and tourism strategies of the area”.

“They provide opportunities for visitors when the weather is not conducive to beach activities and encourage people to stay in the area for longer,” the report stated.

The chocolaterie will also have a showroom, kiosk, wintergarden, function room and production area.

Paking will be available for more than 200 customers and 30 staff.

The report said the facility would generate work for 57 fulltime equivalent positions.

The figure included six qualified chocolatiers, currently employed on working visas. Chocolatiers generally come from Europe, as training is unavailable in Australia.

The new centre is expected to include a training component in order for local workers to develop skills and experience.

The centre will occupy a sixhectare property at the corner of Elkington and the Great Ocean Rds.

TRADESMEN revived a cyclist who collapsed and fell off his bike at Portarlington on Wednesday morning, according to Ambulance Victoria.

The man, aged about 60, was with other riders when he suffered a cardiac arrest.

Advanced life support paramedic Max Bidstrup said he apparently then fell to the ground. “‘The man struck the wooden railing and then fell from his bike, suffering head injuries. Other cyclists immediately started CPR,” Mr Bidstrup said.

“Some tradesmen who were working nearby saw the commotion and went to help. Realising the man’s heart had stopped they quickly went to nearby businesses looking for an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED).

“Three shocks were delivered from the AED and the man regained a pulse just before paramedics arrived.”

The paramedics stabilised the patient at the scene, Mr Bidstrup said.

“The man was then moved to an air ambulance helicopter and flown to The Alfred hospital,” Mr Bidstrup said.

White maggie’s nest gets the chop

WHITTINGTON’S rare white magpie and her new babies have lost their home and nest with the removal of trees to make way for a large residential project, neighbours fear.

The albino female, photographed with two young babes in the nest last month, has since been left homeless at the Oxford St site.

Magpies are a protected native species, making killing them or removing their nests illegal.

“We have had a white magpie liv-

ing near us for several years now but its home has recently been destroyed by developers demolishing a huge area of land to make way for 41 units,” resident Helen Roberts told the Independent .

“It’s so sad when protected wildlife lose their homes in this way. Because it is spring the demolition could not have come at a worse time.”

“I saw one of whitepie’s babies again about two weeks ago,” she said.

“I took one of her looking over her chick on the ground. Now whitepie’s tree and nest has gone.

“At first, I thought it was fenced off but I went in for a closer look and the entire tree has gone.

“But I saw one of her babies with its dad. And I heard another baby maggie in another tree, which is great news.”

NEW SPLIT-LEVEL planter boxes are adding splashes of flowery colour to central Geelong.

Workers began installing the boxes in bench seats along Malop, Moorabool and Lt Malop Sts this week.

The work will continue with the installation of single-level boxes along Ryrie St’s media strip.

Colourful species including bougainvillea, papaya popsicle and purple statice will decorate the planters.

Mayor Darryn Lyons was “thrilled to see some colour in our city centre”.

“There’s way too much concrete in central Geelong. I want Geelong to be a city in a park,” he declared.

“My goal is to create an inviting, vibrant and leafy environment where people want to spend time.

I’m hoping we can achieve this with the planter boxes together with flowers and colourful pole planters, which are coming soon.

“It’s all part of the plan to revitalise our city’s heart.”

Cr Lyons said the boxes were designed “inhouse” at City Hall.

“The planter boxes were custom-made by local company JC Brown. Another local business, BC Garden Construction, is installing the plants.”

Upper House candidate Garry Kerr said the party, fielding candidates in all four local seats at next month's state election, was competing to become the third major political force in Victoria.

Dangerous potholes ‘ignored’

was pacing August but I thought I’d give them a go but then it became two months and now it’s October. We’ve sent them requests via council but nothing’s been done.”

VicRoads regional director Will Tieppo said the roads authority regularly inspected the arterial network and carried out ongoing maintenance to ensure safety.

“During the winter months maintenance crews can generally only apply temporary repairs to the road, which enable us to keep the road open to traffic. Most permanent treatments can only be done during summer when weather conditions improve,” Mr Tieppo said.

“VicRoads is aware of the section of Forest Rd under the Corio overpass, which requires repairs. We will repair this section of the road in early 2015 as part of our maintenance program.

“Signs are in place warning motorists of the approaching rough surface.”

Mr Tieppo said VicRoads inspected the Avalon Rd exit into Lara on Wednesday.

“Some of the top layer of asphalt has come away in a small section, which requires minor patching works.

These works will be completed in coming weeks.

“VicRoads will continue to monitor these sites until works occur.”

Mr Tieppo said VicRoads encouraged reports of incidents or road hazards on 13 11 70.

VICROADS is ignoring potholes across Geelong, leaving City Hall bearing the brunt of community ire, says Lara councillor Tony Ansett.

Key roads in and out of the town are littered with dozens of untended potholes, damaging cars and threatening driver safety, he told the Independent.

“The exit under the Corio overpass, running along the railway line, it must have at least 50 potholes,” he said.

“VicRoads promised to have them repaired by July but they haven’t been touched.

“Avalon Rd, coming into Lara from Melbourne, has about 40 huge holes on the turnoff. They’re everywhere.”

Cr Ansett blamed speeding trucks, including B-doubles, for the damage to Avalon Rd. He called for new speed restrictions to prevent damage.

“They come flying along and need some measures to slow them down.

They drive straight over the top of the roundabout without even slowing down, it’s pretty bad I tell you.

“It’s already damaged cars, I’ve had complaints. Any commuter who comes home to Lara from Melbourne faces this.

“It’s unbelievable that VicRoads could just let it go. I’ve been trying to get something done for more than eight months now.

Display marks century since Geelong sailed to war with Aussie troops

By NOEL MURPHY ONE hundred years ago today the first Australian troops headed off from Port Melbourne’s Station Pier to The Great War in Europe – aboard a ship named Geelong.

The 27th Battalion, including

Highton-born Victoria Cross winner Janes Newland, sailed away on the HMAT (Her Majesty’s Australian Transport) Geelong, disembarking at different theatres of conflict in Suez, Egypt, Gallipoli and Cheshire Ridge.

Weighing in at 851 tons and

with an average cruise speed of 12 knots, HMAT Geelong was one of 36 troop ships of its kind.

When not committed to military transport, the ships were employed to carry various commodity exports to Britain and France.

P&O SN Co. London owned HMAT Geelong, which the Commonwealth Government leased for the specific purpose of transporting Australian troops to their respective overseas destinations.

The ship collided with the SS

Bonvilston in the Mediterranean Sea and sank in January 1916 without loss of life.

80 new jobs in local industry MORE than 80 manufacturing jobs are set to flow from three business investments worth almost $7.5 million, Federal Industry Minister Ian McFarlane has announced.

He visited Geelong this week to announce $2.9 million for the projects from a Geelong Region Innovation and Investment Fund (GRIIF), established to help the city overcome jobs losses in its manufacturing sector.

Quickstep Operations received the largest grant, $1.8 million to develop a $5 million automotive pilot production facility at Deakin University’s Carbon Nexus Precinct in Waurn Ponds.

Mr McFarlane said the facility would enable low-volume production runs of lightweight components for the global automotive industry, creating 30 new jobs by June 2017.

Organic Dairy Farmers received $600,000 for a $1.3 million cream and cheese processing and packaging line at its new manufacturing plant in North Geelong.

The new line would create 23 jobs and help the business expand into export markets for frozen cream, Mr McFarlane said.

Farm Foods received $525,000 for a $1 million project to expand production of red-meat products with shelf lives of 90 days, which would help the company take Asian export markets and create 27 jobs.

Mr McFarlane said each project could provide jobs for ex-Ford and Alcoa workers.

Letters Divisiveness the real threat BOB Thompson (Letters, 10 October) should know many sensible laws in Australia already address security concerns regarding face coverings such as the burqa.

Police can request a person remove their face covering for the purpose of an identity check, which are generally conducted in a culturally sensitive manner.

Further, metal detectors and body scanners are in venues requiring additional security and, unlike many of us, are indiscriminate in the way they perceive threats.

There has only been a single instance in Australia of a burqa used to commit a crime; a bank robbery in 2010.

However, there have been a startling number of verbal and physical assaults against Muslim women wearing religious garments, particularly in recent weeks. Where is Mr Thompson’s concern for the security of these Australians?

He should consider that provocative and exclusivist laws such as those he proposed would only serve to further alienate an already marginalised community and provide vindication to those who commit xenophobic acts toward this community.

Divisiveness is the real threat to security in Australia.

No substitute for jobs MICHAEL Gamble cannot resist demeaning the unemployed (Letters, 10 October), although this time he left out disability pensioners.

I am sorry, Mr Gamble, but it is not about volunteering. It is about jobs, jobs, jobs, as our fearless leaders will doubtless spruik again come election time.

Mr Gamble seemed to believe that volunteering was a panacea for the guilt of being unemployed. He should instead direct his ire at the true cause: governments that fail to ensure adequate employment.

Any amount of voluntary work seems available to anyone yet, when the call goes out for full-time paid employment, the degree of difficulty is insurmountable and it is a no-can-do situation.

Mr Gamble’s favourite charities might cart off busloads of unpaid workers to trim weeds et cetera but no comparable amounts of paid work have been mentioned anywhere I look.

Village people over-rated LOCAL Liberal candidates Paula Kontelj, Ron Nelson, Andrew Katos and Joshua Morris shared morning tea with residents and visitors at Tannoch Brae Retirement Village.

Each spoke for five minutes to introduce themselves then answered questions on issues such as: the future of Avalon Airport; vegetable growing and distribution, also at Avalon; the manufacture of army vehicles and spare parts; and seniors cards.

The main question was whether they would support if elected a petition signed by more than 30,000 residents of retirement villages across Victoria.

For other Geelong residents roads, curbs, guttering, lighting and trees are looked after by council with everyone’s rates. Retirement villages are expected to provide these facilities themselves within their walls but are still expected to pay full rates.

The state-wide petition asks that this inequity be stopped by legislating to ensure councils give mandatory differential rates to village residents instead of the existing system of receiving deputations from villages but rarely granting them, as is the case with Geelong’s council.

Thirty-thousand Victorians constitute a very great deal of Victorian voters.

Giddy-up on racing jobs WHY SHOULDN’T low-profile local horse trainers, who punch above their weight and provide personable and cost-effective owner entry to the sport, not be supported by governance to shore up their livelihoods and share their expertise?

Subsidised forklift and heavy-duty truck driver retraining schemes, while relevant, have their parameters.

Premier Denis Napthine, who as Racing Minister is highly regarded in the racing industry, has in concert with Racing Victoria the ball at his feet to underpin and create local jobs for comparatively little outlay.

In June 2011 $31,000 of Napthine Government funding was provided for the development of a Geelong racing centre and training precinct master plan.

Subsequent paltry funding was provided for fencing, an ambulance track upgrade and a refurbished owners and trainers lounge. Thoroughbred racing in the Barwon region annually contributes $106.7 million, provides 1005 full-time jobs and the direct participation of 5800.

Why not locally grow those numbers? By offering a TAFE-credentialled training school component to the Geelong training precinct, local trainers could be offered the opportunity to be remunerated for implementing certified courses for strappers, stable hands, junior trainers and apprentice jockeys, thereby giving legitimacy to the giddy-up catch cry.

Labor to cut roads funding LABOR has made much of its pledge to spend $200 million on regional jobs initiatives and $1 billion on regional roads but let’s look more closely.

Labor’s initiatives are already reality under the Coalition’s Regional Growth Fund, which Labor said it would axe.

The fund has already delivered 5000 regional jobs and will deliver another $500 million in direct investment to regional Victoria over the next term of government. In the Geelong and the Surf Coast it has invested over $42.7 million into 63 communitynominated projects worth $406.6 million.

Labor’s pamphlets state it will spend $1 billion on regional roads over eight years, or $125 million a year. This year the coalition invested $500 million in roads maintenance. Labor is actually promising to cut roads maintenance budgets up to 75 per cent.

Kapiniaris freaks out for laughs

But not all trips went according to plan, with a total fire-ban declared at St Leonards’ caravan park one Christmas Day. “We were all worried we might have to eat sandwiches and then my uncles put a barbie in the dinghy and took it out on the water and did the cooking there,” Kapiniaris laughed.

“You should have seen all the other people looking at us.”

After almost 30 years in the business Kapiniaris still works on the same formula in his shows, drawing on life’s experiences – good and bad but always funny, whatever the ethnicity.

“We’re testing the waters in Geelong with this show – it’s a fresh approach,” he said.

Kapiniaris and friends will present Zorba the Freak at North Geelong’s Sphinx Entertainment Centre on 25 October.

GEORGE Kapiniaris, the comedian who took the sting out of being called a wog with his stories about growing up with a Greek background, is coming back to Geelong with a new show.

The veteran entertainer said he would use Geelong as the litmus test for the show, drawing on his life experiences.

Instead of his younger years, which earned him celebrity status in Wogs out of Work, he now re-tells tales of family and married life from dating to anniversaries.

“It’s very different, there’s lots of music and, of course, comedy. I can guarantee we’ll leave you with your stomach aching,’’ Kapiniaris said told the Independent.

He recounted special memories of travelling down the highway from Melbourne to St Leonards during holidays.

AUSTRALIAN Chamber Choir will bring its Eternal Light – Lux Aeterna concert to Geelong next month after sell-out performances earlier this year.

The choir’s promoter said director Douglas Lawrence had arranged a program of music to “take the audience on a thematic vocal tour of light and enlightenment across four centuries”.

The concert included Henry Purcell’s anthemic O Sing Unto the Lord, Giovanni Pergolesi’s Magnificat and the title piece, Gyorgi Ligeti’s Lux Aeterna.

The promoter said Lux Aeterna was rarely performed live “due to its extreme difficulty”.

“In an auditory treat for audiences, the Australian Chamber Choir masters the other-worldly quality of this work.

“A film score favourite, Lux Aeterna will be familiar to many following the pirating of the piece by Stanley Kubrick for the soundtrack of his 2001: A Space Odyssey and most recently featuring in the opening scenes of Godzilla.”

The promoter expected the audience to enjoy the song’s stark contrast with Magnificat, performed by the choir, soloists and an orchestra of period instrumentalists from Melbourne Conservatorium’s Early Music Studio.

Director Lawrence would also indulge his love of Bach in the concert, with the choir to perform his O Jesus Christ Mien’s Lebens Licht.

The promoter said other music on the bill included works by Anton Bruckner and Giovanni Palestrina.

This year’s Australian performances will serve as the choir’s warm up for a fifth European tour next year.

Shannon’s Noll’s bouncy new single We Only Live Once evokes more of a country pop feel than some of his hard-rocking songs of the past.

But it’s a new direction he’s keen to showcase as part of the WOLO tour, taking in Geelong next month.

It’s hard to believe that the country boy who took his downhome persona to the city and won a legion of fans has been in the game for a decade.

And he’s still a mate with everyone he meets despite his five top-10 albums garnering 17 platinum and three gold ARIA accreditations.

He became the first Australian male artist in national chart history to achieve 10 consecutive top-10 ARIA chart singles.

With the fresh sound of We Only Live Once, Noll said he was looking forward to getting back in front of his fans to perform a mix of old and new songs.

“I was really disappointed not to have been able to finish the Invincible Tour earlier this year due to illness,” he said.

Assassins aim for GPAC audience A TALENTED ensemble of actors, singers and comedians will feature in a new production of Stephen Sondheim’s Assassins at Geelong Performing Arts Centre (GPAC) next week.

Independent theatre company Watch This will present the show hot on the heels of debut production Pacific Overland, which was nominated for three Green Room Awards.

Artistic director Sonya Suares was excited to recreate Sondheim’s complex, innovative musical for Geelong.

“We’re piloting a new model to tour large-scale shows to regional communities who would otherwise have limited access to this kind of work,” she said.

“It’s a pretty special project.

Getting 21 people on the road is no mean feat, this being only our second year of operation. ” Sondheim and John Weidman’s black comedy kicks off amid the lurid debris of a traveling carnival, taking the audience on a kaleidoscopic ride through the psychological landscape of nine notorious historical figures who made attempts on the lives of American presidents.

Sondheim’s score for Assassins runs from folk to ragtime to big Broadway ballads, hoedowns and barbershop quartets.

Weidman’s story examines the lives, loves and lunacy of nine American assassins, including John Wilkes Booth, John Hinckley, Lee Harvey Oswald and Sarah Jane Moore.

She has two aunts experiencing the trauma of breast cancer, prompting her to join the Cancer Council fundraising efforts with a girl’s night in event.

The Le Thai Chef Girl’s Night In features a pink spring theme, with participants encouraged to wear their favourite spring carnival hats and colours with a splash of pink.

No-interest loans meet needs GEELONG No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS) will celebrate five years of providing no-interest loans to individuals and families on low incomes in the region next month.

Chairman Peter Patterson says the scheme has approved over 400 loans, totaling $350,000, since opening in Geelong.

“These loans have been possible due to the generous support provided by the National Australia Bank and we do rely heavily on the integrity and honesty of every one of our borrowers repaying their loans so that new loans can be made.”

To be eligible for loans of up

Most loans approved are for items such as whitegoods, televisions, furniture and computers, with car repairs also eligible.

Event for kids 10Am 1pm, Thursday 23rd october 2014 The Poppykettle festival features activities and fun for kids.

CHILDREN throughout the Geelong region are gearing up for the 33rd annual Poppykettle Children’s Festival at GPAC on 23 to 24 October.

“Generations of children have enjoyed the Poppykettle celebrations since 1981 and the festival has become a much-loved annual event,” says GPAC general manager Jill Smith.

The festival was inspired by local author Robert Ingpen’s award-winning children’s book The Voyage of the Poppykettle, first published in 1980 and recently reprinted.

“GPAC is proud to continue the Poppykettle tradition and we look forward to inspiring and entertaining a new generation of young people at this year’s festival,” Ms Smith said.

The fun begins Thursday with Poppykettle Kinder Day from 10am to 1pm.

Children will be encouraged to play, create and laugh as they join in a range of free activities including face painting, bubble blowing, badge making, clay work, mask making and various other arts and crafts.

Entertainment for the youngsters will include circus buskers, a marimba muster, magicians, musicians and GPAC’s much-loved mascot, Sparky.

Great prizes will go to children dressed as their favourite book character.

Children can register on the day at the main desk for judging at 11.30am.

Activities will be held all throughout GPAC, where children can collect a treasure map to find their way around the activities and entertainment.

Poppykettle Primary Day the following Friday will give school children an opportunity to participate in arts-based workshops and performances that will stir their creativity.

Schools from around the region will participate in the festival, with activities facilitated by Geelong Regional Library, Courthouse Arts, Geelong Gallery, Barwon Water and National Wool Museum.

Part of the Vicwest Community Telco GPAC Education program, Poppykettle Children’s Festival is Geelong’s premier family event, dedicated to promoting and celebrating performing arts for young people.

FREE! Reading’s fun ROAD to Reading’s fun learning environment introduces children to letters, sounds, words and reading concepts as preparation for starting school.

Primary educator and program director Kate Keogh believes that Road to Reading gives children the best opportunity to begin their school journey with greater confidence and understanding of language and literacy.

“By replicating a classroom environment, the children learn about the structure and expectations of a prep grade,” Kate says.

“The sessions are jam-packed with stories, songs, games, activi-

ties and cater for children aged between two and six. The children forget they’re learning and are just so busy having fun.”

Each class is kept to a maximum of eight children, enabling the qualified primary teachers to give close attention to each child.

With a strong speech focus, Road to Reading sessions use cued articulation to support children needing extra assistance in articulating individual sounds.

The sessions are also ideal for children who demonstrate early awareness and skill with words and literacy.

Classes run weekly during school terms, while a summer holiday program will run again in Torquay from 5 to 16 January.

The intensive program offers a boost for children starting prep in 2015, building their literacy skills so they can hit the ground running when school starts.

Road to Reading offers a free trial session for parents to see what everyone’s talking about.

Road to Reading will be at Poppykettle Kinder Day on 23 October.

IndySport Cats in strife too early bite

On the

GEELONG Cricket Club finds itself in some early season strife with no victories from its first two games of the Victorian premier league season.

Add to that a growing injury list, with Dom McGlinchey struck down by a foot injury last week, and the Cats really need to bounce back tomorrow against Melbourne.

Jack Sheppard took four wickets against Camberwell last week and will need to continue his good form with the ball, while recruit Carl Sandri stood tall, top-scoring with 60.

There’s been no consistently tougher team than Melbourne over the years and the Cats will need all their players to dig deep if they are any chance to win this and keep their season alive.

In Geelong Cricket Association, Geelong City has enjoyed a perfect start to the season with two victories from as many starts.

After defeating Leopold in round one the Sharks took on Murgheboluc last week, with star English import Richard Oliver scoring a magnificent 116 at the top of the order.

With support from Jack Driver (46) and Tom Elliott (28), 239 was the final score after 50 overs.

In reply, the Frogs started well, with Jason Grozdanovski (76) leading the way.

But when Mark Worthington (3/31) removed both openers, City marched onto an impressive victory.

Tomorrow, in the last one-day match for some time, City takes on Grovedale, which also claimed a valuable win last week, chasing down South Barwon’s 7/264.

Tobias Hogg came of age with 127, while Gareth Yelland returned to the top of the order scoring 64.

Geelong City has regained the belief it belongs in the top flight and will look to prove to the league it’s more than a one-man team.

The Saints showed their depth against Guild St Mary’s last week with an even batting performance, capped off by Frank Mileto’s gutsy 52 while batting at number eight and helping his side to 195.

Steve Illingworth, Blake Robinson and Jaymee Guy all took two wickets to help their side record a tight 24-run win.

Torquay finds itself with one win and a loss after going down to Thomson last week.

With no Tigers scoring 50 or taking three wickets, the entire side needs to step up to have any chance here.

One factor in the Tigers’ favour is that St Peter’s star import, VRS Kedarnath, is serious doubt with a suspected broken finger.

With a winnable game against bottom-placed Lethbridge, Bannockburn can really set itself up for a strong finals tilt with this match.

Fishing heats up WARMING weather fired up the fish over the past week, especially the snapper.

Steve Prior, Nick Albutt and Nick Panozzo set out from Clifton Springs early Sunday morning with calm conditions, anchoring up next to the mussel beds on the way to Point Richards. They soon boated a snapper tipping just over 6kg after an incredible fight.

The guys also caught a dozen flathead and managed several nice-sized squid from the shallow grass beds just out from Clifton Springs.

Rahmi Nihat promised son Kain his first snapper, so the pressure was on. Luckily enough Kain’s rod screamed off with a 4.1kg fish before they caught another snapper of 2.2kg for a great day on the water.

Snapper were also caught from Corio Bay’s inner-harbour. The spoil grounds next to Limburner’s Point were productive for pinkies and pike, both of which took soft plastics such as Gulp Turtleback worms in Pumpkin Green.

Brody Craig and Brett Martin tested their light soft plastic set-ups on snapper after locating fish in the bay. Both their reels were soon screaming with rampaging fish over 5kg.

Their epic session featured 15 snapper, four of which were over 5kg and the biggest 8.5kg.

Other anglers caught snapper to 4kg from the rocks at St Helen’s boat ramp, with bluebait getting the best results.

St Leonards continued producing healthy-sized squid over the shallow weed beds. Size-3 jigs accounted for most captures.

Whiting were caught just out from the St Leonards boat ramp in the area known as Bourke St, which can also produce snapper.

Queenscliff’s squid were spread out, with some of the larger specimens caught over the grass beds.

Bigger jigs such as size 3.5 and 4 were responsible for most of the captures.

Queenscliff Harbour produced silver trevally and snapper on soft plastics. Some of the snapper pushed 4kg, providing a real fight on light gear.

Mick Knight found snapper to 7kg off Barwon Heads where he also boated some respectable-size Australian salmon on his Snapper Snatchers.

Ron Proud boated a 3.7kg snapper in 40m off Barwon Heads on Sunday.

Brian Long and John Mole fished the rocks just past Lorne for Australian salmon. Casting Sluk lures, they landed big fish to 3.5kg.

On the freshwater front, Lake Purrumbete fished well for an ANSA during the weekend. Competitors caught numerous brown trout averaging 2kg to 2.5kg when fishing deep with downriggers.

Peter Thorpe had his work cut out for him when he hooked a 4.279kg brown.

The Barwon River around Queen’s Park held good numbers of redfin for anglers casting soft plastics and hard-body lures such as Atomic Shad Deeps and Eco Gear SX40s. Redfin to 40cm were landed, with anglers landing good numbers after locating schools.

Anglers using baits such as corn kernels and worms caught carp to 6kg again around the Queen’s Park Bridge.

This weekend is looking good for snapper and Australian salmon off Clifton Springs on soft plastics or bait. Freshwater anglers should try the Barwon River for redfin with lures, covering water until a school of fish is found.

Local surfers in Noble pursuit to win Victorian title A PAIR of local surfers will try to overtake a Phillip Island rival to win a Victorian open men’s championship at Bells Beach this weekend.

Jan Juc’s Jack Perry and Ocean Grove’s Josh Johnson-Baxter are the only competitors with a chance of overtaking Cape Paterson’s Steve Noble in the final round of the TOLL Victorian Open Series.

Noble leads after winning the Phil-

lip Island round earlier in the year. He sits on a 3720 points, 720 points clear of Perry in second.

An uncharacteristic early loss at Phillip Island left Perry needing a solid result at Bells to overtake Noble for the championship. Perry must either win or place second and have Noble finish outside the finals.

However, the advantage of surfing at his home break could give the lo-

cal surfer an edge on his rival from the other side of Port Phillip Bay. Johnson-Baxter faces a harder task after missing the first event at Gunnamatta. He must win and have both Noble and Perry falter early in the draw.

Johnson-Baxter gave himself a slim chance when he finished second at Phillip Island.

The winner of the series will earn

direct entry into the draw for the Rip Curl Pro Pre-Trials at Bells Beach during Easter.

The women’s division was wrapped up at the previous round when world number 23 Georgia Fish, of Flinders, won the title.

Surf forecasters this week predicted clean one-metre waves with offshore winds for Bells on Saturday but smaller onshore conditions on Sunday.
