A $500,000 Labor election promise to save the Olinda Pool received raucous applause on Tuesday night as the community squeezed into the Olinda Hall.

Hundreds of concerned residents came together for an opportunity to meet with councillors and politicians, voice their concerns and make plans for the future to save their pool, in the hope that it’s opened in time for summer.

The pool was closed late last year by the Yarra Ranges Council citing irreparable cracks and low attendance.

Since then, a report has confirmed that the cracks can be repaired at a cost.

Save the Olinda Pool committee member Narelle Everard, who also chaired the meeting, said that while she didn’t like the reason for the community coming together, it was great to see the people of Olinda take a stand. “To be able to get so many people together, it’s a sign that we have a strong message,� she said. “We want the pool reopened.�

Another committee member Tim Moore said that there was complete community consensus about what the town wanted. “Even amongst different groups in the community, including Save the Olinda Pool and Friends of Olinda Pool, we all want it reopened by summer,� he said. “The council let it run down, without any maintenance for 20 years, and now they’ve taken it away.�

Monbulk MP James Merlino was invited to speak to the room, and pledged $500,000 towards the redevelopment of the pool and construct a new community playground if the Labor Party wins the State Election, and his commitment was matched by the Yarra Ranges Council. “I’ve thought long and hard about this,� Mr Merlino said. “But you don’t build a community

TAFE twist slammed

By JESSE GRAHAM A WAR of words has erupted between political parties after last week’s announcement that TAFE would be returning to Lilydale next year - only not at the former Swinburne site.

Box Hill Institute CEO Norman Gray announced on Wednesday 8 October that Box Hill would be setting up a campus in Lilydale with the Centre for Adult Education, offering classes at the beginning of 2015.

The TAFE will be offering 20 courses in subjects such as health and aged care, construction and animal studies, along with VET classes for high school students and the possibility of transferring from a diploma to a degree with Deakin University.

Mr Gray was accompanied by Minister for Higher Education and Skills, Nick Wakeling, and Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe, who announced government support of $2.25 million for the TAFE. The location for the new campus was not announced on the day, with Mr Gray citing negotiations over the lease for the site, but a Box Hill Institute representative confirmed the campus would not be at the former Swinburne campus.

Labor candidate for Evelyn Peter Harris and Deputy Opposition Leader James Merlino said the fact that Box Hill would not be running from Swinburne’s campus was an “insult” to the community.

“To come along and offer us a shop-front, we think, it is pretty insulting, as a TAFE and a university sits there as a ghost town,” Mr Harris said.

Mr Wakeling and Ms Fyffe said on the day that the provider’s move to Lilydale was not influenced by government, but decided upon before the funding was organised.

“The most important thing is that it is Box Hill’s decision on its own,” Ms Fyffe said.

“The new CEO and board have

done an evaluation to see if it’s profitable, and they’re in for the longterm.

“If I was 20 years younger, I’d be doing cartwheels,” Ms Fyffe said.

Mr Gray said that, following Swinburne University of Technology’s closure of its Lilydale campus in 2013, there had been a gap in further and higher education for school-leavers.

“The community here, we know, hasn’t been getting the vocational education for employment,” he said.

“It’s an area that’s not well ser-

viced at the moment - we consider it to be part of the extended community, so we thought we can’t miss this opportunity.”

He said that running a traditional TAFE was not financially sustainable, but that video conferencing technology and transportable training equipment would be used for students in the Lilydale campus.

Labor announced earlier in the year that, if it wins government in the 29 November election, it will reopen the former Swinburne campus to university and TAFE, possibly by compulsorily re-acquiring the campus if it was sold.

Mr Wakeling criticised the pledge, and called on the opposition to support the new Box Hill campus.

“Government should not be in the business of telling educational facilities what courses they operate, from what buildings and what staff they employ - that is not the role of this government,” he said.

“Box Hill made the decision that they wish to provide services here, because there were none.

“I’m calling on the opposition to back the decision of Box Hill TAFE.” Yarra Ranges Councillor Maria McCarthy said the announcement was a ‘great outcome’ for students, who could now enrol to study in Lilydale next year.

“We couldn’t have asked for a better outcome,” she said.

Rumours have circulated that the campus could be opening at a former car-yard in Lilydale - Box Hill Institute was contacted with the rumour, but no response was given before deadline.

SUCCESSFUL sustainability in the Yarra Ranges was lauded by the State Government earlier this month, with the council and Healesville Sanctuary receiving state-wide awards from the Premier.

The Yarra Ranges Council and Healesville Sanctuary received the awards on Thursday 2 October, winning two of the nine categories for the annual Premier’s Sustainability Awards.

The sanctuary received the Tourism award for its work in promoting environmental sustainability to visitors, while the Yarra Ranges Council received the Community award for its Seedlings: Early Years Learning for Sustainability program.

Yarra Ranges Council’s Early Years Development Planning Development officer Claire Rock said the program was hands-on for children, who took part in 12 different pilot sites in the shire.

The pilot program was run in preschools, play groups and day

take on environmentally friendly practices, such as using toilet paper made from recycled paper.

“One of the biggest threats to wildlife is everybody’s personal footprint on the environment - we are a highly consumptive species,” he said.

He said the sanctuary aimed to have over 400,000 visitors in 2014, and that they would like every visitor to think of how they could help the environment.

“It’s not only sustainable practices on-site, it’s how do we impact the 400,000 people to take action, which can have a far bigger impact,” Mr Holland said.

Seymour MP and Eildon candidate, Cindy McLeish, congratulated the sanctuary on its award.

“Healesville Sanctuary is leading by example and making our local area a cleaner and more livable place to live and work,” she said.

In brief Flasher charged MONBULK police are warning children to be aware of their surroundings after they charged a man with offensive behaviour and stalking.

Sergeant Mark Knight said a 22-year-old Silvan man would face Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on 11 February.

Police will allege he drove his car past the girls, hid in bushes and pulled his trousers down.

“We would like to hear from anyone else who might be a victim to this sort of crime,” Sgt Knight said.

The man has since been released on summons.

Congratulations to our solar stars IN the so-called ‘rooftop revolution’, there are more than one million Aussie houses with solar power systems.

Much less common is solar power on commercial buildings.

Local businesses that have gone solar are taking an important leadership role. They are our ‘Solar Stars’.

The third example is Lysterfield Discount Animal Supplies. Their solar power system installed a year ago, has 20 panels. They also purchased a press for cardboard and plastic wrap, to help make sure their packaging is recycled rather than going to landfill.

Nationally, 15,214 businesses have installed solar power systems according to the Clean Energy Council. Every year they save an estimated $64 million on power bills.

The Federal Government still is considering abolishing or cutting the Renewable Energy Target (RET). This would cut jobs and make solar power more expensive.

By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM ECHO Youth and Family Services will receive $150,000 as part of the Napthine Government’s $12 million ‘Engage!’ program.

The Emerald Youth and Family Centre will build on impact mentoring delivered in the current Engage program by providing young people with experiences such as community mentoring, skills training, civic projects, peer leadership and school engagement.

State Member for Gembrook Brad Battin welcomed the funding, saying that the Engage program would help more young people in the Gembrook electorate live active, healthy and fulfilling lives.

“These programs build on the Napthine Government’s commitment to give young people in the Gembrook electorate more opportunities to get involved in their local community and to develop skills that will help them in education and along employment pathways.”

The money will be put towards helping people aged 12-25 to develop skills, build confidence and make new connections for life after school.

ECHO, or Emerald Centre for Hope and Outreach, is a Christian based, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to helping young people who are struggling personally or whose families are faced with social, financial or other major difficulties.

Phone scam hang-up BEWARE of people phoning you saying they are from your bank.

I received a call on Grand Final day. It was a woman from an Asian sub-continent who said the bank had been assessing my account and, yes, I had been overcharged on the interest, but the government was addressing it.

Now she had my name, address and date of birth, so for me to get a refund, she needed my card number so that they could refund me the money.

She also gave me a code number and said someone would ring me back on Monday and inform me how much my refund would be.

I told her everything (because she) got me at a bad moment, and I gave my details.

I put the phone down and then phoned the bank, said I felt pretty stupid - think I have been scammed.

It was five minutes after the call, so thankfully they didn’t have time to access my details or money.

The caller was very plausible and the bank said they had had several people who had been called, so not to be upset. I had realised what had happened straight away.

The story doesn’t end there. A man phoned on the Monday saying he was from a government department dealing with the interest refund.

“Um”, I said “you mean the department that does not exist... card cancelled”, and put the phone down.

However, Tuesday 7 October, this woman rang again asking had I been phoned by a government department about the refund.

I took great pleasure in saying it doesn’t exist - you weren’t phoning from the bank. The phone went bang!

Please take my warning; it if sounds too good to be true, it is. They are very plausible. It took five minutes for my antenna to work. Most banks don’t let you know things about your account over the phone. They write you a letter.

Do I still feel stupid. You bet I do. So if this letter warns just one person, I don’t mind feeling so.

Insult to education IT IS disappointing to see that Labor have labelled the great news that Box Hill Institute will establish a dedicated TAFE campus in Lilydale as "an insult".

The Opposition have once again shown that they can only be trusted to talk down Victoria’s

world class training system.

On Wednesday, Box Hill CEO Norman Gray said the institute has identified a demand in the region for a campus that at capacity would enable 800-900 students to use.

Hardly the "tiny shop front with a handful of courses".

The Opposition’s cheap shot at a TAFE shows they have scant regard for Box Hill’s commitment to deliver education in Lilydale.

Labor’s comments show they are interested in cheap political rhetoric rather than improving employment outcomes for our young people.

By MELISSA MEEHAN IT’S not often a primary school student can claim real work experience before they reach high school. But the kids at Belgrave South Primary School will soon be able to do just that - with their very own restaurant opening on Friday. Project

manager Carla Nimiczeck said the school had started growing vegetables last year and found they had too much produce, so decided to start cooking it up.

Now, they have their very own restaurant that teachers and students can attend with each student given a job to do

--prepare, cook, serve or do dishes.

Named after former principal Sophie Giles, Sophie’s Restaurant could be one of the hottest eateries in town. On Friday, the restaurant was in hot demand as students lined up for as far as the eye could see.

Wood, Hunt for green thumbs

By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM ENVIRONMENT Minister Greg Hunt joined La Trobe MP Jason Wood in Belgrave last week to launch a $450,000 ‘Green Army’ project.

A team of young people will spend the next six months working to eradicate the noxious ‘Wandering Trad’ weed from areas within the Dandenong Ranges.

The initiative is the first of many Green Army projects which aim to employ young Australians to support local environment and heritage conservation projects across the country.

The group will assist the Community Weeds Alliance of the Dandenongs who have already spent a considerable amount of time removing weeds from the area.

“Wandering Trad is a major invader of riparian creeks and rivers. It dominates the understory of vegetation preventing indigenous species from thriving,” Mr Wood said.

The launch, held at Birdsland, was also attended by members of the Green Army and the Community Weeds Alliance of the Dandenongs.

Mr Hunt said this was an important

project for the community and also provided experience for the young people involved.

“These young Australians will generate real environment and conservation benefits for this community, and gain valuable training and experience in the process.”

The Green Army team will focus particularly on land in the southern and eastern areas surrounding the Puffing Billy Corridor to improve trail connectivity in the parks, bushland reserve and trackside properties of the historic Puffing Billy railway.

The young people will work with the Port Phillip and Westernport Catchment Management Authority to undertake a range of weed management activities with the aim of improving the biodiversity values and resilience of the Dandenong Ranges. The funding will help with enhancing wildlife habitat, managing weeds and reducing the threat of bushfires.

Pools of tears and fears

In an emotional night, many wiped tears from their eyes as the Olinda Hall quickly filled with concerned residents, young and old.

When Duncan Brown stood up to ask Yarra Ranges councillor Jason Callanan about the future of the pool, he struggled to get the words out.

Great days in the field THE Wandin-Silvan Field Days Committee hosted its annual 44th Wandin-Silvan Horticultural and Farm Machinery Field Days event.

Being the premier agricultural event of the greater Yarra Valley region, it is unique through its strong horticultural theme, focusing on the needs of intensive farming systems including orchards, vineyards, rubus growers, commercial nurseries and others.

Long-time committee member and President Darren Sibley said the event provided the perfect showcase for machinery, irrigation, farm inputs and a multitude of other items specific to specialised crops.

“It is the ideal opportunity for local and regional business to make direct contact with their target audience,” he said.

“From tractors to ride-on lawn movers, crop spraying equipment to chainsaws, water tanks to fertilisers, along with a large display of caravans and general interest products, there is something of interest from one of the numerous exhibitors at the Wandin-Silvan Field Days.

“There are few other field day events with this specific focus in Victoria and the WandinSilvan Field Days commonly attracts growers not only from the local area, but further afield across regional Victoria.”

One of the displays will be from Glenmac Sales and Service who will show machines in action at the event.

UPWEY’S Burrinja Gallery will host free performances, workshops and demonstrations at its annual open day later this month.

The best of the gallery will be on show when it opens its doors to visitors from around the Yarra Ranges and beyond.

Live performances will be aplenty and local talent will be celebrated when the Sweet Sassafras Choir takes to the stage, as well as a dance showcase,

circus arts performance and a show by The Forest Collective, all held in the Burrinja gallery.

There will also be live music for diners at the Burrinja cafe.

For those that would prefer to take part in demonstrations, there will be many workshops in other rooms of the gallery.

The Big Draw will be happening in the studio gallery, as well as working artist studios, watercolour workshops and mosaic demonstrations.

Community garden planting, bush toy and weaving projects will be available for visitors of all ages. The day will conclude with a special performance of ‘Holy Dying’ by The Forest Collective at 3pm in the Black Box. Tickets for this event are available at www.burrinja.org. au and the performance is not suitable for children under 15.

Artworks of acceptance THE Sooki Lounge is hosting a celebration of diversity during the Alrassa Exhibition throughout October and November.

The Belgrave bar and lounge is showcasing the artwork of the Alrassa Artist group, whose artists create pieces that encourage the acceptance of diversity.

The group is a joint project of disability organisations Alkira Adult Training and Support Services and Nadrasca Community Options.

Featuring many types of art created by people with different levels of skill and ability, the aim of the program is to assist these individuals to become independent artists by providing them with support, feedback and opportunities to display their work.

This exhibition is one of many that display the work of the Alrassa Artist Group each year with artists also contributing to an annual exhibition and receiving invitations to show-

case their work around Melbourne.

Exhibitions such as this provide exposure for the artists’ work as well as giving the public an opportunity to engage with the artists in this project.

THE Hut Gallery’s Annual Exhibition was held on Sunday 12 October followed by a celebration of its 70th anniversary.

Painting, pottery and photography were on display at The Hut Gallery’s ‘Spring Fever’ exhibition in last month.

The gallery, home to the Ferntree Gully Arts Society, showcased the work of several local artists on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 September.

The event also featured demonstrations of different art styles from many of the artists whose work featured in the show.

Celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, The Hut Gallery hosts a number of exhibitions throughout the year as well as opening its doors to the public every Sunday from 11am to 4pm.

Marian Lowe’s parents-inlaw started the gallery in 1944 and she remains the secretary of the organisation today. She says that the gallery provides an opportunity for local artists to showcase their work as well as for the community to experience visual arts.

“We run a number of workshops throughout the year and everyone is invited to join in.

“There are also a number of exhibitions, so there is definitely a chance for everyone to experience what we do.”

Sun rises on first Puffing Billy IT IS hard to imagine the hills without Puffing Billy and surprising to know just how close the historic railway came to closing down.

In 1954, The Sun journalist David Burke decided to write to the Victorian Railways and suggest one last trip on Puffing Billy before the line was shut down and torn up.

On 11 December 1954, tickets were sold for the final trip on the historic train from Upper Ferntree Gully to Belgrave.

More than 30,000 people came to farewell Puffing Billy and 2500 train rides were sold.

Named after Burke’s newspaper column, the final trips of the train were dubbed the Young Sun Special.

Due to its overwhelming popularity, a second day was organised and it became clear to

Puffing Billy will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Young Sun Special. many that Puffing Billy was an icon of the Dandenong Ranges that should not be destroyed.

This led to the formation of the Puffing Billy Preservation Society, the organisation that continues to run Puffing Billy to this day.

To celebrate 60 years since the first Young Sun Special, the Puffing Billy Young Volunteers Representatives Team will be

running a commemorative trip later this year.

Held on Saturday 13 December, the day will include live steam displays, ‘behind the scenes’ tours and a festival at Emerald Town Station including live music, carnival rides and displays.

There will four departures from Belgrave station on the day and the last train to leave Emerald Town Station headed back to Belgrave will be at 3.45pm.

By JAMIE STRUDLEY WEEK Two of Yarra Ranges Athletics summer season was again blessed with perfect weather that enhanced the smiles on faces young and old, having a positive effect on the athletes and their performances.

First up in the morning was the javelin for the under 11s to under 16s with the under 11s having their first competition in this event. It’s fair to say all the boys and girls handled the event with ease and all said they looked forward to trying for a PB next week.

The next event was the 1500m which is a tough run generally, but not for Georgia Laven as she owned the race to record a centre record that has stood for 30 years. Australian champion, Lateisha Willis, broke two centre records, the 200m and 90m hurdles which dated back to 1985, while Kiara Flavel, whose parents are both Olympic medallists in their own right, smashed a 1987 high jump U9 girl’s record by 8cm. Other events for the morning were jumps, discus, shot put, high jump and javelin coaching for the Under 9s who did a fantastic job and mastered the basics. A big mention also to the on-track under 6 boys and girls who have so much fun learning all the basics and playing lots of fun games.

Yarra Ranges Athletics had a number of athletes competing in the Primary Schools Divisions held at Nunawading last Thursday and the day produced a high number of good results that will see the athletes back at Nunawading this coming Thursday for the Eastern Region Titles, a top two finish here will send them to the State finals. Congratulations also to the many club athletes who competed at the Region Secondary School Championships and to those that qualified for State Championships next Friday.

The first round of Athletics Victoria shield competition was held on Saturday afternoon. Excellen conditions welcomed a big team from Yarra Ranges Athletics. Results are not yet available but the smiles and chat throughout the day suggest everyone had a great time.

By the time the bean counters had perused the scorecards, it was found that Reynolds hung on to lead the field by six strokes. His 163 saw him six strokes ahead of Ken Hill (15) on 169 and in third place is Graham White (14) on 174. Unless the sky falls in or something rolls in from off the square, it is assumed that the winner will come from these three.

Reynolds also leads the handicap section on 133 from Hill on 139 and Dennis Fuller (15) and Whiteare next, a long way back, on 146.

In B Grade, Leigh Morison (18) hung on to his lead also on 169 with Allan Ecclestone, who played a blinder next on 173.

These two also hold the reins in the handicap championship with Morison on 133 and Ecclestone 2back on 135 and Ian Scott on 144 in the distance.

The daily competition was dominated by Ecclestone when his 83 off the stick transferred

to a net 64. This score headed B Grade and the entire field as well.

A Grade saw Dennis Fuller win with a net score of 83.

The players to better their handicaps without figuring in the money exchange were Morison and Peter Clowes who both finished with a net 68 and Ben Balfour (18) and Ian Scott (27) both managed 69.

The Stockdale and Leggo nearest the pin on the 4th was won by Clowes while Reynolds won on the 12th, John Fisher the 13th, and Fuller rounded out the day by being nearest on the 7th and the pro pin 18th.

Brianna McCoy was leading the ladies’ championship but was overtaken by a stunning round by a sometimes wayward but often brilliant Deanne Shannon.

On Wednesday in the Overly Fictitious Golf (OFG) comp Mick Petrie (32) was the conquering warrior when he came in with 41 stableford points. Ken Sumsion (24) and Jeffrey Marsh (29) had 39 while Geoff Whittaker (25) had 38. Next Saturday is the last day of the championship and unless something untoward should happen, I suggest that Reynolds and Morison will hang on to their leads to salute the judges.

Teams warm to victor y

By STEVE UTTING THE sun was shining on the Monbulk Cricket Ground on Saturday with the 1st XI and the U17s both recording great victories.

Playing against UFTG, the 1st XI chased down 143 in the last over with captain/coach Shane Cosstick hitting a six to win.

He finished on 62 not out. Monbulk finished on 6/144.

The U17s got off to a great start easily chasing down The Basin Cubs 3/73. Monbulk reached 1/83 in the 16th over. Aaron Gillard finished up on 28 n.o. and James Fenby made 21. Nic Boundy in his first game took 1/6.

The 2nd, 3rds, and 4ths all had very competitive matches, unfortunately all losing their one day matches.

Top performers were Rick Lamers 61 n.o. in 2s, Greg Hulm 49, Liam Mackin 43, Evan Binding 4/30 in 3rds and Shannon Tibballs 3/30 in 4ths.

In other Junior matches, both the U15s on Saturday morning and the U13s on Friday night lost to strong Lysterfield teams.

The U15s managed 9/62 (Dan-

iel Rak 15), in reply to Lysterfield’s 5/122 (Rab Noonan 2/9).

In the U13s Monbulk made 6/77 (Rab Noonan 25 n.o., Sage Farmer 15 n.o., Ben Grimes 15 n.o.) in reply to Lysterfield’s 1/124.

Monbulk’s new U10s and the two U11 teams (Maroon and Gold) can continue to train on a Wednesday night for a few more weeks with matches not expected to start until Friday 7 November.

Monbulk’s successful Milo in2Cricket season will also commence soon.

Tight fit for wins in Reeves Shield real nail-biter

By STEVE BROWN FTGDCA Round 2 ROUND 2 of the Reeves Shield produced a nail biter between Knoxfield and Belgrave as the Knoxfield Knights posted 8/132 from their allotted 40 overs with Luke Scanlan making 33.

The Magpies were set up early by top order batsman Doug Oaten with 41 however gradual wickets falling to Jayson Scanlan (3/17 from eight) and the match in the balance until the final batting pair of Mick Litterback and Luke Manion steered their team to victory with only one ball to spare.

In another tight encounter at Upwey Recreation Reserve, the home team lost to top side Eildon Park by one wicket.

Batting first, Upwey paid the price for not batting its 40 overs, all out for 147 in the 37th over.

Sam Waters's innings of 38 not out included four sixes after Eildon Park bowled superbly early on with Mick Sinclair taking 1/6 from eight overs including five maidens with great support from all-rounder Kyle Snyman (5/18).

In reply the Panthers got the chocolates nine wickets down on the back of Cody Morris’e 54.

Not to be outdone, another thriller saw Monbulk defeat Upper Gully with four balls to spare.

Set 7/143 from 40 overs, Monbulk’s skipper Shane Cosstick steered the ship with a half century to win by four wickets.

Martin Weightman performed a good double for Johnson Park with 3/16 and 45 as his team knocked over Ferntree Gully which was dismissed in the 38th chasing 6/166.

Aggressive Basin batsman Danny Rundle belted an unbeaten 62 to polish off Knox Gardens which was all out for only 111.

The Bears won the game by eight wickets and have started the season with two wins after promotion from Decoite Shield.
