Newtown Hockey Club claimed the prestigious State Government award from competition across Victoria.

The award capped off a triumphant season in which the club won numerous senior and junior premierships.

President Claire Barnes said the award recognised the club’s efforts at junior level and in encouraging new players. “We started a Saturday afternoon social program at King Lloyd Reserve for all ages and skill levels and that has really taken off,� Ms Barnes said. “It’s only our second year and the numbers are increasing all the time. We want to keep it going into summer but with crIcket starting up we need to find another venue. “That way we can expand the Saturday social program and cater for people from different cultural backgrounds and people with disabilities, for instance.�

Ms Barnes said the program was ideal for anyone hesitant about the commitment of joining a regular team. “We get a lot of parents of juniors having a go or people who played years ago coming back into it.�

Victoria’s biggest regional hockey club has 292 playing members.

Hockey Victoria chief Andrew Skillern said the club had worked hard to offer community access to hockey. “What makes Newtown City so unique is its continued work with the local community reducing travel and ensuring the game remains attractive and affordable.�

Police search for body

HOMICIDE police together with search and rescue services will today mount a hunt for the body of missing Leopold man Paul Kingsbury, believed murdered.

Police expect the search to concentrate on Geelong’s northern suburbs.

The hunt follows new information to police more than three

months after the 27-year-old was last seen in Larkins Lne, Moolap.

Mr Kingsbury’s bank account has remained untouched and his mobile phone unused since his disappearance.

A 36-year-old Indented Head man arrested in July has been remanded in custody on seven charges related to Mr Kinsgbury’s disappearance: one of kidnapping, three of false imprisonment, two of

threatening to inflict serious injury and one of threatening to kill.

He was bailed and is scheduled to appear in the Geelong Magistrates’ Court on 12 December.

A second man, also 36, was arrested in McKillop St, Geelong, in September but later released without charge after questioning.

Detectives arrested a third person, in Fairbairn Dve, Corio, also in September after a lengthy manhunt.

The man, who remains in custody, faces one charge of kidnapping and three of unlawful imprisonment, two of threatening serious injury and one of threatening to kill.

Detective Senior Sergeant Boris Buick, of Homicide Cold Case and Missing Persons, told the Independent today’s search followed new information to police. “We’ve received some information that has led to the search we’re

conducting Friday morning in Geelong’s north,� he said. “Search and rescue will be involved, the SES and the police chopper as well.�

Det Sen Sgt Buick said the search was not only for a body but other evidence concerning Mr Kingsbury’s disappearance. “I wouldn’t confine it to a body.

It could be that or something connected to the disappearance.�

LOCAL lass recently holidayed in old Erin, soaking up the delights of the Emerald Isle and its welcoming pubs and constituents.

In one pub she found herself nattering to a bloke very keen on Melbourne and revisiting the city.

"He’s a famous musician, that one," the locals told her.

She remained unimpressed, thinking said bloke was a local accordion player or somesuch.

Nope, it was U2’s Bono.

"I checked in on Google images the next day and, yes, yes it definitely was," she told Double Take.

"Apparently he pops up in Dingle town occasionally and everyone but the big, goofy

Aussies recognise him."

Well, some big, goofy Aussies, maybe.

WISTFUL Cats fans holding out hope of Paul Chapman returning, at least in an off-field role, might like to give up their dream.

A big for-sale sign has appeared outside the Norm Smith medallist’s Torquay home, which has been noticeably quiet anyway since Chapman joined the Bombers after the 2013 season.

With the festy midfielder/forward set to play on for Essendon next year, it looks like he’s settling nicely into Melbourne with his young family.

Hopefully Gary Ablett, a former Torquay lad, is in the market for a new home and a resumption of scenery!

HYPERBOLE by Mayor Darryn Lyons about giant Corio Bay Christmas trees and political firebomb attacks on his nightclub had critics lining up to take potshots this week.

Social media tragics in particular were ablaze with comments.

"Breaking. Geelong Mayor to hold presser at 11am his toast was burnt this morning claims its a plot against him. #toastgate," tweeted one wiseguy.

At least some of the Twitterari saw the wry side of it all.

"He reckons half of Geelong would have gone up if his Home House had caught fire - at least you might have seen that from outer space!" offered another wit, or should that be Twit.

HOW MANY plans does it take to run a region?

Quite a few if Committee for Geelong's pitch for state election commitments is any indication.

The committee this week called for transport and Geelong growth plans as part of its policies for the election.

The committee’s Geelong on Track plan seeks funding to develop a 25-to-50-year passenger and freight rail strategy. The Growing Geelong Charter wants money to develop a “Geelong-led strategic framework to grow Geelong”.

Geelong already has a G21 Regional Growth Plan, which Planning Minister Matthew Guy released last year as a 40-year blueprint for the region.

At the time Mr Guy said the Regional Growth Plan provided a “criti-

The plan identified residential land supply for the next 30 to 40 years to accommodate a projected population

of 500,000 and employment land to accommodate up to 80,000 new jobs by 2050.

Geelong's council also has an “integrated comprehensive transport plan” - following a dozen other transport-related plans - to be presented next week, as well as a strategy to revitalise the central city area.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott outlined a “positive plan to build on Geelong’s many competitive strengths to make it an even better place to work and raise a family” in the Independent in July.

“Our plan will build better infrastructure, deliver programs to help local businesses grow and generate jobs and improve community services including the NDIS,” Mr Abbott said.

Geelong even gets a guernsey in last year’s State Government Melbourne Plan.

Committee head Rebecca Casson said Geelong needed locally-developed plans.

“Short-termism isn’t delivering for Geelong. We all want the best for Geelong but we don’t have a shared understanding of what that is,” Ms Casson said.

“Geelong lacks a united plan. The plans we develop from now on must have the broad support of the entire community and they need to endure beyond political cycles.

“We must develop a shared understanding of what growth means for Victoria’s second largest city.”

Mayor Darryn Lyons said council’s new transport plan was developed after a review of the G21 Region Public Transport Strategy, Geelong Road Safety Strategy, Geelong Port and Land Infrastructure Plan and the G21 Regional Growth Plan.

Shifting sand ‘danger’ for Canberra dive site

SHIFTING sands are making an HMAS Canberra dive site off Ocean Grove dangerous for divers, according to Diving Industry Association of Victoria.

The Canberra was lying at an angle after it was scuttled on sand rather than rock five years ago against industry advice, DIVA president Xavier La Vaqueresse told the Independent.

“The industry association did give the bureaucrats advice and made suggestions it shouldn’t be scuttled where it was because it wouldn’t last - a few decent storms and it would get trashed,” Mr Vaqueresse said.

“The Canberra has substantial damage and is now on angle.

“It’s breaking up prematurely. It

was designed to break up over time but it’s happening a lot earlier than they thought.

“There are instances of wrecks overseas where chunks have dislodged through a build-up of exhaust air bubbles lodging in areas where they accelerate the rusting, decomposition, process.

“Whole decks can collapse if the integrity of an area is weakened and the Canberra’s been copping a battering from storms in Bass Strait.”

“Parks Victoria has closed the wreck site on occasion before because of damage to it being a hazard to divers.”

Parks Victoria said the listing or tilting of the wreck presented no significant issues.

“The ex-HMAS Canberra dive site is fast approaching its fifth anniversary. While there was some initial movement when the ex-HMAS Canberra was first scuttled, it is very settled now,” a spokesman said.

“The dive experience is better than ever as more and more marine life moves in and around the vessel.”

Queenscliff Dive Victoria operator Jason Salter also disputed the DIVA claims, saying the wreck posed no additional danger as a result of its location.

“We fought very hard to ensure we left things in the wreck, knowing full well they’ll come loose over time,” he said.

“Marine life has taken to it and it has a real atmosphere. It’s dark and dirty in certain places, which makes it

more of an advanced wreck than a boring straight, cleaned-out ship.

“People dive for that sense of exploration.”

Mr Vaquaresse insisted the wreck site could present a dangerous workplace for dive operators teaching students.

Parks Victoria had a duty of care to ensure the wreck was safe for diving, he said.

The Canberra was scuttled in 2009, drawing the ire of recreational divers and Liberal MP David Koch over limited access to the site where three of four moorings are licensed for commercial operators.

Then-tourism minister Tim Holding drew fire for diving the site before it was open.

Hayley Parker returned with silver and Anthony Wilksch grabbed a bronze medal in the cookery category.

The three-day event showcased the skills of 500 of Australia’s best trainees, apprentices and students in 50 skill and trade areas.

Working as a team, Mr Barton and Mr Diaz had to program and

set up an automated machine to perform a set of tasks.

Geelong Worldskills chair Gary Barnes said the haul of medals was the region’s best since 1987.

“The team of 10 had been training with their teachers for months to hone their skills in preparation for the competitions," he said.

“As well as competing for national glory, the competitors were also vying for a coveted position on the 2015 Team Australia Skillaroos heading to Sao Paulo, Brazil, to represent Australia at the 43rd WorldSkills International Competition.

“We're really hopeful that Jake and Luke will be part of that Skillaroos team.”

Will the real Mitch Clark please stand up?

By NOEL MURPHY MEET Mitch Clark... the other Mitch Clark, that is.

Unlike the Cats’ main trade target, he’s not 200cm or 100-plus kilos or even a key AFL forward.

But he could be one of Geelong’s rising sport stars.

This diminutive Mitch Clark is nowhere near his mid-20s, either, but he already has a few accomplishments beyond those of the former Melbourne forward.

For starters, young Mitch enjoys plumb spot on his league’s goal-scoring ladder, with a cool 249 majors 71 ahead of his nearest rival.

He also owns a premiership flag after his team won September’s grand final.

And Mitch was unofficial skipper of his team, making him a reigning premiership captain.

That’s not a bad effort in any code.

But young Mitch’s code is basketball. His team is Ocean Grove Marlins, in the under-14s.

He’s modest about his achievements.

“Yeah, it’s pretty good,” he said of the flag win.

“Yeah, it’s not bad,” he offered about his namesake.

As much as the larger Mitch Clark might fancy his sporting credentials, the news is all bad for him at the Marlins.

Sorry, mate, they don’t seem to need you.

GEELONG’S Islamic Society will host a public barbecue this weekend in a bid to highlight the religion’s code and offset fears over terror activities overseas.

Imam Mohammad Ramzan said the community and interfaith barbecue would promote harmony.

“This is a very good opportunity and we’re utilising it for a message of love and peace and togetherness to others, to other cities,” he told the Independent.

“It’s in the sense that, if we can live together happily, why can’t others as well?”

The Muslim leader has criticised terrorist acts in the name of Islam and called for a united local community against violence.

He told the Independent that Islamic State forces (ISIS) had nothing to do with Islam or Australia’s Muslim community.

This weekend’s barbecue will mark the sacrifice of the prophet Abraham, patriarch across three religions to Muslims, Jews and Christians alike.

Eid al-Adha, or Feast of Sacrifice, commemorates Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son to prove his faith before he was given a sheep to

kill instead. The commemoration is one of the final rites of the annual hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.

“Three million Muslims get together in Mecca in the pilgrimage and all over the world they sacrifice an animal commemorating Abraham,” Imam Ramzan said.

“Symbolically, this represents how our possessions and our life need to serve other human beings and how the purpose of life is to sacrifice not just for yourself but for others.

“The festival is followed by a barbecue every year in which the Muslim community and other brothers and sisters from different traditions and faiths get together. We share our lunch and just talk harmony, peace, love and living.

“This interfaith celebration on Sunday is in the tradition of Abraham.

It will be open to the public and people are coming from the Interfaith Geelong Network, some 40 or 50 people from the local community.

“Some will be from the Christian tradition, some might be from other traditions, little children will be coming also to see how we can live together.”

The Islamic Society of Geelong’s mosque is at 45-47 Bostock Ave, Manifold Heights.

Hold the lagerphone: Pearse’s mutant instrument for family concert

By NOEL MURPHY 'THE lagerphone has been around for years, To make one, you drink a lot of beers, You shake it up and down, Or you beat it on the ground, In the Didgi-Bodhran-Lager-Harp Song.'

Now there's some great lyrics; pure Aussie craftsmanship from the pen of South Geelong concretor and Irish music fan Pearse Hoare.

His DBLH Song, excuse the abbreviation, was written for an annual family concert hosted by sister Kath at Halls Gap. Brother-in-law Bernie Woolfrey ran up the idea of a lagerphone contest and Pearse applied his tradie’s nous with a few bits of pipe and duct tape to throw himself into the fray.

“I decided to gain an advantage over my worthy opponents by creating my own, made out of a didge with lagerphone attached and an Irish bodhran and a harmonica. I added a whistle on one night,” Pearse told the Independent.

“I made the lagerphone myself with the bottle tops nailed to a couple of pieces of ply.

“I realised there’s not many songs you can do on didgi-bodhranlager-harp so, being an ideas man, I wrote one and I called it The DidgiBodhran-Lager-Harp Song because, like I told you, I’m an ideas man.”

The competition was fierce, Pearse related. The prize was a lagerphone master-crafted by Woolfrey.

But it wasn’t destined to be his.

“For some reason Kath, being a judge, disqualified me. I didn’t win it, I was never going to win it – one of the kids did.”

When not fashioning musical aberrations, Pearse works on a collection of short stories. He’s pretty mum about them for the time being but offered a little about one yarn, involving himself and mates in their early 20s renting a house without a shower.

Footy training and games provided a wash four times a week but three days of BO prompted them to join a basketball side to sweeten their armpits earlier in the week.

“We couldn’t play to save ourselves,” he admitted.

It might not be Shakespeare just yet but there’s sure to be plenty of Aussie grit and humour.

As for his didgi-bodhran whatsit, it’s available for use by the punters who frequent Pearse’s local watering hole, the Valley Inn Hotel.

But there’s a catch.

“Yeah, sure, anyone can have a go on it but it’ll cost them a beer,” he said.

Backers buoy anti-nets group

By NOEL MURPHY CRITICS of commercial netting in Corio Bay have enlisted new political support in their campaign to replenish the city’s whiting, snapper, calamari and flathead stocks.

A meeting of 100 recreational anglers at St Alban's Football Club this week heard Mayor Darryn Lyons and Liberal candidate for Geelong Paula Kontelj back their call for a ban on

netting in the bay.

The backing buoyed Ivan Bereza, president of Friends of Corio Bay Action Group, who said he hoped for more before the state eleciton on 29 November.

Wednesday's trapping of a yacht in netting on Corio Bay highlighted the scope of problem, he said.

“Corio Bay is the most heavily netted bay in Australia for its size,” Mr Bereza told the Independent.

“There are 42 commercial net fishermen in Port Phillip Bay. Only eight of those are local Geelong people, most are from Melbourne but we’ve counted 19 in one night and it’s normal to find about 20 in any one week.

“That’s why 70 per cent of all fish caught in Port Phillip Bay comes out of Corio Bay and has been for many years.

"Corio Bay is an easy place to net with its shallow waters and secluded areas.”

Mr Bereza said raising the issue of

Corio Bay’s excess netting was a matter of exposure and educating the public about commercial fishing practices.

“Geelong’s not only feeling the brunt of manufacturing and CBD downturns but also seeing its bay total wiped out of fish every year,” he said.

“Geelong needs all the help it can get.

Fishing is a big tourism issue and can benefit Geelong socially and economically.”

Mr Bereza said most fish netted in

Corio Bay wound up in Melbourne or Sydney.

He was concerned about commercial operators failing to accurately lodge catch figures with authorities and black market activity further complicating problems and prospects for resolution.

Cr Lyons believed it was “important to keep the fish healthy and large in the region”.

He described his support for action group as “enormous”.

Work begins on plains’ pipeline

Region in worst for ‘black spots’

GEELONG has among the highest number of mobile phone black spots in Australia, according to a Commonwealth Department of Communications list.

Federal member for Corangamite Sarah Henderson said 136 black spots were reported to the department in her electorate.

The department listed 6000 black spots across Australia, including Geelong suburbs Newtown and Armstrong Creek.

Iconic Bellarine Peninsula towns like Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads, Point Lonsdale and Queenscliff also suffered.

The black spot list grew along the Surf Coast and Great Ocean Rd, including Airey’s Inlet, Anglesea, Bellbrae, Bells Beach, Fairhaven, Lorne, Torquay and Jan Juc. The Great Otway National Park and various coastal tourist routes also had dead spots.

Ms Henderson said she was lobbying for funding under the Federal Government’s $100 million Mobile Black Spot Program.

Ms Henderson said she would meet communities to canvass concerns about communications issues, including broadband and fixed-line services.

“The Government expects that between 250 and 300 new mobile phone base stations will be built across Australia,” she said.

“In some cases, nominated locations are close to each other, meaning that one base station may be able to provide coverage to multiple locations.”

AGRICULTURAL hopes for the region have taken a key step forward with the start of a 18-kilometre water pipeline to Lethbridge where new farming enterprises promise hundreds of jobs.

A new intensive agriculture precinct in the district will include poultry, pig and goat farming for meat and dairy production.

The pipeline will supply water over 4000 hectares to boost existing farms and lure new producers.

Authorities hoped to attract $160 million of new investment, creating 770 jobs over the next decade.

Western Victoria MP David O’Brien said agriculture already employed about a quarter of the Golden Plains Shire workforce.

“This project will create new export opportunities and make the intensive agriculture sector more sustainable and resilient in the face of changing economic and environmental conditions,” he said.

“The precinct has a number of competitive advantages, being near meat and dairy processors, close to markets and feedstock providers. It also has a growing number of intensive farming businesses already in the precinct, appropriate land use zoning, good transport links and a pool of suitable labour.

“However, the precinct’s growth has been hampered by the lack of an adequate water supply, which is what this project will address.”

The precinct could become a significant economic driver as key players in the region’s $10 billion manufacturing sector closing or face closure.

DEPARTMENT OF YOUTH: Victorian Youth Minister Ryan Smith announces funding in Geelong this week to assist young people at Whittington. Mr Ryan said State Government would contibute $120,000 to council’s Up and At It program, which funds a series of initiatives and activities for youths in the Whttington area.

LEADING Geelong businessman Robert Costa has vowed to keep driving a Geelong Performing Arts Centre funding campaign right up to state election eve next month.

Mr Costa is leading the charge on seeking State Government priority commitment to the redevelopment. He has funded a car sticker campaign, even plastering the highly visible yellow decals on his classy Bentley.

Mr Costa is a GPAC board director but said he was running the campaign for the $140 million staged redevelopment as a private citizen.

Geelong’s cultural infrastructure would have much-needed immediate economic benefits for the region, including creation of up to 1300 jobs during construction and beyond as well as an estimated $40.2 million annual contribution to the local economy.

$2m bill to axe Medicare body

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN WINDING up Geelong’s Medicare Local will cost $2 million, a Senate hearing has been told.

Barwon Medicare Local (BML), which coordinates local primary health care services and works to fill gaps in service provision, will close when its funding ceases mid-next year.

Federal Government will replace it with a primary health network stretching to Warrnambool.

The Senate Select Committee on Health held public hearings in Geelong this week.

Barwon Medicare Local chief Jason Trethowan told the hearing long-term leases on two offices contributed to the high wind-up cost.

BML intended to tender for the new primary health network but was still waiting on details of

the proposed organisation, he told the hearing.

Mr Trethowan said BML had yet to lose any staff despite the uncertainty.

“I would imagine that if information were delayed further into the New Year it would certainly be a risk,” he said.

Mr Trethowan told the hearing that losing BML’s work with allied health providers and in mental health would be a setback for the region.

He said a report to the Government recommending the change from 61 Medicare Locals nationally to 30 primary health networks failed to address the “critical role” of allied health.

“If we are an outcomes-driven organisation that wants to reduce the rates of chronic disease or manage chronic disease more effectively in supporting an ageing population we cannot do that

without connections with allied health.”

Mr Trethowan told the hearing a “strong connection” with allied health providers would be needed for a primary health network to succeed.

He was keen to see any new organisation continue BML’s investment in the region so far.

Committee chair and ALP Senator Deborah O’Neill said the hearing heard of widespread concerns about the “constant erosion of care” under new federal health funding arrangements.

“The Abbott Government has cut funding to Barwon Health by $44 million over the next four years and by $582 million over the next decade,” she said.

“Local Liberal MPs have gone silent when they should be shouting from the rooftops against these cuts to their community.”

Veterans’ voice earns state award A BARWON Health volunteer who tirelessly speaks up for fellow war veterans has won a Victorian Senior of the Year Award.

Health and Ageing Minister David Davis presented the award, in the veteran community category, to Geoff Casey at a Government House reception.

Mr Casey has been with Barwon Health since 1996 but also volunteers for Vietnam veteran groups and other organisations supporting veterans in southwestern Victoria.

Barwon Health veterans liaison officer Tyne Smith nominated Mr Casey for the award, describing him as a “humble man who provides a voice for

those who need it most”.

“Geoff has dedicated his life to helping others and continues to do so as our veterans volunteer in his retirement.

“He does not let his senior years slow him down and is someone who really makes every day count.”

Barwon Health said Mr Casey visited University Hospital Geelong weekly to visit other Vietnam veterans, providing them with “advice, comfort and someone to talk to”.

“For many of these patients Geoff is the only person they believe they can trust and open up to.

“In addition to this, Geoff

works with young returned servicemen and women, sharing his experiences and providing advice and ideas about how to better cope with post-traumatic stress disorder.

“He also visits widows of World War 2 veterans, who can sometimes feel scared and lonely. For these widows, Geoff provides company and gives them strength to help remember the loyalty and service of their late husbands.

“Barwon Health is proud to recognise Geoff as one of our volunteers and thanks him for the significant contribution he makes to the organisation and wider community.”

Traffic key for Bellarine votes

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN BELLARINE Peninsula traffic woes are set to play a role in the state election amid pressure from Ocean Grove and Drysdale lobby groups.

Ocean Grove Community Association will raise eight traffic issues with Bellarine’s Labor MP Lisa Neville and Liberal challenger Ron Nelson.

Drysdale Clifton Springs Community Association has raised a number of traffic issues this year, including a bypass pro-

posal and congestion at the town’s main roundabout.

Ocean Grove association secretary Michael Harbour said the group urgently wanted traffic signals at several intersections because they had become increasingly busy.

Mr Harbour said the intersections of Tuckfield St and Marlin Dve, Shell Rd and Surfside Centre and Presidents Ave and Orton St had been identified.

He said development of Shell Road Reserve with an aquatic centre, Surfside

facility, netball courts, a skate park and a proposed sports pavilion along with schools meant traffic conditions were “becoming increasingly dangerous”.

The association also wanted speed limit reductions of 10km/h on sections of several streets, including Presidents Ave and Wallington Rd. Mr Harbour said the association supported the duplication of Grubb Rd because of “the rapid growth” of its Oakdene and Kingston estates and forthcoming shopping centre.

The association suggested a possible two-storey car park in the town’s main car park area and refusal of future developments if they sought to waive more than 10 per cent of car parking spaces.

Mr Harbour said heavy vehicles should be restricted from using Dare St as a thoroughfare.

A public transport strategy for the peninsula could include a feasibility study for a light rail service along the Bellarine Hwy, he said.

“The route could be from Geelong Railway Station to South Geelong Railway Station along the rail trail to the Bellarine Hwy and then to Pt Lonsdale.

There could be bus interchanges at Pt Lonsdale, Grubb Road, Leopold and Moolap feeding into the light rail service, with services running every 15 minutes in peak hour.”

Mr Harbour said the association would continue to lobby for the extension of Geelong’s ring road to Bellarine Hwy and Portarlington Rd.

The Melbourne-born director of controversial new film John Doe: Vigilante and his Warrnambool partner found Geelong a happy medium.

“We love living in Geelong because the sense of community is magnificent.

It’s a bit of old school Australia that’s been lost elsewhere,” Dolen enthused.

His passion for the region and his chosen profession collide as he outlines hopes of basing a future film project locally.

“I’d love to make a Geelong bornand-bred film for the international market. There are a lot of talented actors in Geelong, fantastic locations, and it’s all so accessible.

“It would be great to bring the film industry down here through the support of the local community, help put Geelong on the map.

“It’s a long-term journey and there are lots of baby steps along the way.”

Although already scoping his next project, Dolen is busy promoting John Doe: Vigilante, in a limited national

complishment” considering the difficulty Australian films having cracking the US market.

The independently-financed feature stars Battlestar Galactica’s Jamie Bamber and AACTA winner Lachy Hulme of

Critiqued as the best Australian film since Romper Stomper, it broaches the “prickly” subject of taking the law into one’s own hands.

“The original concept started bubbling around in my mind after the Port Arthur massacre as I saw the reaction to this ordinary guy who became a mass killer,” Dolen said.

“The film is the result of what happens when you take all emotion out and are left with nothing but logic.”

The polarising film tells the story of John Doe, a man accused of being a brutal vigilante serial killer – but only of repeat offenders who “deserved to die”.

As his trial verdict approaches, an investigative journalist probes the accused to discover the motive and reasoning behind his actions as a vigilante group called Speak for the Dead emerges in support of John Doe’s cause.

The film chronicles the intense social debate about justice versus vengeance.

Away from the set, though, Dolen stays locally involved in film as an acting teacher at Moore Grace Studios and as a movie reviewer for Bay FM.

Prize painting tugs at hearts of all seafarers A PORTARLINGTON artist’s painting of a tugboat dwarfed by a ship has won a national award for “raising the profile of seafarers worldwide”.

Judges of the Mission to Seafarers Maritime Arts Awards and Exhibition acknowledged Jane Powers with their premier 2014 award as well as a $15,000 prize for her oil-on-canvas David and Goliath.

Ms Flowers, a land and seascapes painter for more than 20 years, was a previous finalist in the awards and won its people’s choice category in 2009.

“Container ships ply our supply routes but become incapacitated behemoths at destination,” she said.

“Time for the plucky tugs with their no-nonsense pushpull attitude.”

Mission to Seafarers Victoria chief executive officer Andrew Fleming said entries to the awards explored the “relationship between humanity and the sea”.

The entries also sought to convey the importance of the mission organisation, which manages the welfare of merchant sailors and other seafarers in Australian ports.

Head blow rest worry TOUGHER tests should be carried out before concussed footballers are allowed back on the field, according to Geelong research.

Deakin University found that concussed players showed abnormal motor control, mental ability and brain activity for up to 10 days after the initial injury. Deakin neuroscientist Dr Alan Pearce said underlying brain injury could still be present after the visible symptoms passed.

“Current testing measures will not pick up the actual impact to the brain, so there’s a need to review the testing regime to ensure that concussed players do not return to the field before the brain has had time to fully recover,” Dr Pearce said.

“We now know that the brain can take up to 10 days or longer to recover from the impact of a concussion.

“From the grassroots through to the professional level, multiple modes of testing over more than five days are therefore needed to assess a player’s recovery from sports related concussion.”

including headaches, nausea, visual disturbances, disorientation or amnesia and loss of balance. Loss of consciousness is reported in 10 to 20 per cent of cases.

Dr Pearce said that under existing procedures players who had suffered concussion attended training after a day or two of rest and “ran around the ground at increasing intensities”.

“If they do not develop a headache or dizziness during the increased exercise bout they are considered fit enough to resume training and to compete. At the amateur level concussion monitoring is ad-hoc, with some clubs enforcing a rest policy but a majority of clubs allowing players to continue training and playing if they show no obvious symptoms.”

Dr Pearce measured the motor control, mental functioning and brain activity of 40 players from an amateur football club over one season, during which eight suffered concussion.

The concussed players showed a slower response and movement time, which resolved within 48 hours. However, at the 10-day mark their attention and brain activity had yet to fully recover.

Dairy milks grant for 30 new jobs

A $2.2 million expansion project will create 30 jobs at a dairy north of Geelong, according to MP Simon Ramsay.

The Member for Western Victoria announced that the Meredith Dairy project would also safeguard the future of 80 existing jobs at the milk and cheese facility.

The expansion would help the dairy meet demand from major Australian supermarket chains and export

markets in China, other parts of Asia, New Zealand and the USA, he said.

State Government has granted the dairy $200,000 for the project.

Established in 1991, the dairy produces milk from 2500 sheep and 5000 goats.

Mr Ramsay said the owners recently “invested heavily” in facility to make cheese and yogurt, “helping drive business growth”.

State award for $77m plant turning sewage to fertiliser

A $77 MILLION plant turning the region’s sewage into fertiliser has won Barwon Water a state award.

The water authority said its “biosolids drying project” won an environmental projection category at the 2014 Premier’s Sustainability Awards last week.

Plenary Environment and Water Infrastructure Group operates the facility in a public-private partnership at Barwon Water’s Black Rock sewage plant.

Barwon Water began work developing the facility over a decade ago after the Independent revealed opposition to its initial system for managing biosolids.

The system involved trucking the material to Werribee for drying then spreading it on farmland near Geelong.

The Black Rock facility turns biosolids, a sludge-like by-product of sewage processing, into pellet-sized fertiliser.

Barwon Water managing director Joe Adamski said the corporation was delighted the project had been recognised.

“The facility provides an environmentally sustainable, long-term solution for biosolids produced at Black Rock and Barwon Water’s smaller water reclamation plants,” Mr Adamski said.

“It closes the loop in the sewage treatment process and will help Barwon Water meet its commitment to a no-waste sewerage system where 100 per cent of recycled water and biosolids are committed to sustainable use.

“Sewage can no longer be seen as waste. Today it’s transformed into highly valuable products – recycled water and biosolids – that can be re-used for beneficial purposes.”

The Black Rock facility, the first of its kind in Australia, produces almost 140 tonnes of biosolids daily.

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN RED TAPE is strangling Geelong’s ambitions to become the chicken meat capital of Victoria, according to Victorian Farmers Federation.

Federation chicken group manager Laurie Mannix said complex planning processes posed a threat to industry expansion plans.

“Planning is a real issue because it’s taking three or four years to get birds in sheds versus 16 months elsewhere,” Mr Mannix said.

The Independent reported last month that poultry industry operators had plans for local multi-milliondollar expansions because chicken farms were constrained from growing in other parts of the state.

Mr Mannix said a State Government-led chicken meat growth strategy was needed to repeal the “confusing, costly and restrictive” processes.

Demand for chicken was growing nationally by five per cent but production was short 1.5 million birds, he said.

“Plenty of people want to eat chicken but no one wants a chicken farm beside them. The costs of obtaining planning permission can make developments unviable. Some farmers have to spend up to $150,000 just to obtain planning permits.

“We had three farmers recently who had to go to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal and it cost them $500,000 in legal costs and delays in a case they clearly won.”

Mr Mannix said Geelong offered the best hope for protecting and growing the industry on land clear of urban encroachment for the next 20 to 30 years.

“Geelong is ideal where land is not pristine property but suitable for chicken and pig farming where farmers can make a long-term commitment. It’s got everything going for it if the planning is right.”

Geelong’s “huge opportunities” would create six jobs for every 200,000 birds farmed, he said.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mostly a raised highway over very shallow water, with a minimal footprint and space for yachts to get through underneath but it also has a nifty drawbridge section over the shipping channel, which is raised about once a day.

The bridge is twice as wide as Geelong would require and would probably look better without the duplicated lanes.

Ban the burqa SECURITY has always been a concern, especially at airports, banks and our parliaments, both state and federal.

Wearing any cover that disguises identity in such places is flirting with danger.

The burqa is such a disguise that allows the wearer to remain unknown. It is so effective, readers might remember, that Saddam Hussein escaped detection when he wore one to flee his palace.

Speaker Bronwyn Bishop was right to restrict the use of burqas in our Federal Parliament building because they could be worn by anyone wanting to do harm as a terrorist.

I note that burqas are banned in France.

I for one believe they should be banned in Australia as well.

Ban the bag LOOKING out my front window this morning all I could see blowing in the wind was plastic bags.

It was an ugly sight.

They blew from rubbish bins as they were emptied last week. Every rubbish collection day with the slightest breeze results in the same litter in our streets and front gardens.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s about time Geelong made a move toward being plastic bag free.

Pier pressure builds on owner of â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;eyesoreâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; WHEN I first came here I heard so much about how Frank Costa loved Geelong, so now he should prove it.

His Costa Group owns Cunningham Pier, which it is an eyesore on the waterfront and nothing but a car park with a second-rate Disneyland-style building on the end and a cheaplooking archway at the front.

Costa Group should spend a few tens of millions of dollars on rebuilding the pier. It should demolish the buildings, lengthen the pier and construct an iconic, multi-purpose building on it.

Otherwise Costa Group should sell it to Geelongâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s council for a token dollar so council and private enterprise can rebuild the pier.

With all due respect to the Mayor, what I have seen of his design for a Yarra Street Pier lacks a lot of the infrastructure needed for a cruise ship.

And why should my rates money be used to help the yacht club?

Although heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not my favourite person, maybe Jeff Kennett needs to pay another visit.

Supermarkets also have a responsibility to discourage the use of plastic bags by providing new re-usable bags for purchase and asking customers whether they want a bag before automatically giving them one.

THE Princes Freeway has become the focus of speed debate, with a proposal to increase the limit from 100km/h to 110km/h.

Research indicates the increase would provide limited improvement in travel times while significantly increasing road trauma.

We know speeding is a major factor in about a third of all fatal collisions.

We know the chances of being involved in a crash double for every 10km/h increase in speed in a 100km/h zone and every 5km/h increase in a 60km/h zone.

We know the 30 seconds saved on a 10km journey by going 110km/h instead of 100km/h is not worth the risk of killing yourself or someone else.

Unfortunately, the speeding culture in our country is our biggest challenge in driving down road trauma. The only way to stop the needless death on our roads is to change this culture.

Peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s attitudes to seatbelts and the increase in the stigma associated with drink driving are proof we can do it and we will continue to work hard to change attitudes toward speeding, mobile phone use and drug driving.

Victoria Police officers will respond if they observe irresponsible behaviour on our roads.

Gaye time for LaBonte

By NOEL MURPHY THE MUSIC of R&B and soul master Marvin Gaye, the late great musician, singer and songwriter, will be in capable hands when Bert LaBonte brings Let’s Get it On to Geelong Performing Arts Centre next week.

LaBonte will be on stage with the prodigious Vika Bull and the backing of the Funk City Band in a twohour narrative-cum-concert exploring Gaye’s humbler beginnings, his strife-riddled relationship with his father – who shot him dead 30 years ago – the women in his life and his search for meaning.

Gaye’s music defined a generation and all LaBonte’s show features all his hits including What’s Going On?, It Takes Two, How Sweet It is, Dancing in the Streets, Sexual Healing, Ain’t No Mountain High Enough, I Heard It Through the Grapevine and Let’s Get it On. LaBonte, one of Geelong’s most talented musical and stage performers, said Gaye’s life story was sad but his music soared, even decades after his death.

“It’s a pretty tragic story but we’re trying to keep it as a celebration of his music,” he told the Independent.

“We have a great band. We did a great three weeks in Melbourne in March then a week return in September.

“We have Geelong on the 16th and then we have Sydney and Bris-

bane pencilled in for early next year.

“The music has some political stuff in his later songs and there are some real anthems. It’s been fantastic to play those tunes and it’s been a gift of a role – I couldn’t believe the response when we played the first season.”

LaBonte has a powerful CV with a string of Melbourne Theatre Company credits including Clybourne Park, Richard III, The Mountaintop and Rupert.

He won a Helpmann Award two years ago for his role in An Officer and a Gentleman and also starred in one-man show When I Fall in Love –The Nat King Cole Show.

LaBonte still occasionally performs on stage around Geelong, fronting local eight-piece band Madhouse, although he’s stepped back in recent years.

“I did a gig with them at Torquay two weeks ago. It was a great night but I’ve only done maybe three gigs in the last four years – Grant Durham’s the front man these days,” he says.

Vika Bull makes for a stellar partnership with LaBonte in Let’s Get It On. Her 25-year career has included performances with legendary musicians including Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, Sting and Joe Cocker. Most recently she starred in smash-hit concert At Last – The Etta James Story.

MSO Chorus to play in basilica

GEELONG’S St Mary’s basilica will resound to the strains of one of the most iconic pieces of Russian a cappella music when Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Chorus performs Rachmaninov’s Vespers this weekend month. Written in 1915, Rachmaninov’s All Night Vigil, also known as Vespers, is a radiant masterpiece pulsating with the ancient traditions and extraordinary emotional power of the Russian Orthodox Church.

The song is considered one of the composer’s greatest achievements. MSO managing director André Gremillet said the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Chorus was proud to be performing the powerful work in cathedral spaces in Geelong as well as Melbourne and Bendigo.

“To hear the chorus perform one of their most beloved works in a holy cathedral setting is spinetingling,” he said. “This event is open to people of all ages to experience the extraordinary and vibrant sounds of the MSO Chorus.”

Rachmaninov’s work gives new life to ancient chants and texts, expressing the deep compassion at the very heart of Mother Russia during the time of World War 1 when the work was written.

Chorus master Jonathan Grieves-Smith said this special event would highlight the chorus’s strength in performing epic works by the world’s greatest composers.

“The chorus has been closely associated with this work for many years and time and again we find greater depths and greater expression. We are very excited to be presenting this work,” Grieves-Smith said. The MSO Chorus comprises 120 singers from all walks of life, hailing from Melbourne and beyond. In 2015 the MSO Chorus will celebrate its 50th anniversary. The Rachmaninov concert begins 3pm Sunday. Tickets, costing $25 to $30, are available by phoning 5225 1200.

Jokester Matt’s a stand-up guy LAUGHING BOY: Matt Elsbury hopes to tickle his Geelong audience’s funny bones next Friday.

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN STAND-UP veteran Matt Elsbury brings his pointed brand of observational comedy to Geelong next week.

Elsbury has made Geelong laugh a few times, both as a headliner and support act for comics such as Carl Barron.

After 15 joke-filled years in the industry, Elsbury said he was enjoying an upswing in the popularity of stand-up comedy.

“It’s cyclical but there are a lot of really good comedians coming through at the moment,” he observed.

“Having a large talent pool to draw from means the whole comedy scene is more encouraging for others to give it a go.”

Elsbury gave stand-up a go himself during his university days in student theatre and improvisations.

“Stand-up was actually the last frontier and turned out to be the best,” he laughed.

Elsbury said he loved taking what often appeared ordinary or mundane in life and zooming in for a closer look.

“I like to pick things apart,” he mused.

“There are certain forms of stupidity I like to crack open and poke fun at. As a former English teacher I have a love of language, so there are everyday words and turns of phrase, perhaps in an advertisement or in a song, and it's often not until we take a closer look that we see how bizarre it all is.”

Although Elsbury has a string of radio and television credits to his name, he said the adrenalin rush of working solo with an audience affected him every time.

‘Early birds’ get festival discounts PUNTERS can save 50 per cent on admission to Geelong’s three-day music festival, promoter Hugo T Armstrong has announced.

He said the discount for Motor City Music Festival applied to purchases of “early-bird” tickets until 13 November.

Prices would then rise to the normal level.

“My tip? Buy your early-bird tickets now,” Armstrong said.

The festival will run over the March long weekend, beginning on Friday night at Geelong Showgrounds.

Last year’s inaugural event attracted thousands of patrons with a mix of blues, rock, pop and tribute bands.

Armstrong last week released the first list of more than 40 acts to play over five stages.

He said the next lot of “mainstage acts” would be revealed

after early-bird ticket sales closed.

Armstrong and his Bay City Events team joined Geelong leaders last week to officially launch the second Motor City Music Festival.

The Independent is a sponsor of the event.

Clinic, APHA reach out to public THE GEELONG Clinic has partnered Australian Private Hospitals Association to promote Mental Health Week from 5 to 11 October.

The clinic has been hosting an inflatable elephant to help destigmatise mental illness and to promoting the Barwon region’s message of “reaching out” for mental health.

The elephant represents the needless suffering people can experience through not acknowledging the elephant in the room of mental illness.

The elephant also represents the barriers to recovery such as guilt, shame, trauma and worthlessness that hold back growth and healing.

The message that The Geelong Clinic and the Australian Private Hospitals Association seek to convey is that it’s okay to talk about mental health and to seek help.

The Geelong Clinic staff with Esmeralda the elephant, spreading the Mental Health Week message.

They believe that consumers, families and carers too often avoid the topic because it is so confronting.

However, with as many as one in five Australians experiencing a mental health condition in any one year the elephant in the room clearly is the need for more discussion and support to assist all Australians to understand the need to encourage one another and the importance of seeking and utilising help.

Like the elephant uses its trunk to communicate and gain sustenance, it is important that people continue to reach out to family, friends and profession-

als until they obtain the help that best meets their needs.

GEELONG Cricket Club started its premier league season poorly last Saturday, going down to Carlton in a one-day game at Kardinia Park.

Batting first, the Cats started brightly with openers Matthew Harrison (40) and Eamonn Vines (22) putting on 67 for the first wicket.

But a middle-order collapse saw the home team fall to 4/77.

Carl Sandri (22) and Dom McGlinchley (20) did their best to resurrect the innings but a steady flow of wickets had Geelong dismissed for just 147.

In reply the Blues lost an early wicket when Corey Ogle struck but from then on Geelong lacked penetration and was passed four down.

Tomorrow the Cats head up the highway to take on Camberwell Magpies, which also lost last week, making this a crucial early-season encounter for both teams.

In Geelong Cricket Association, newly promoted Bell Post Hill enjoyed a first-up win against Newtown & Chilwell and will relish the opportunity to test itself against reigning premier St Joseph’s tomorrow.

For the Panthers, Northern Territory Country regular John Flynn (64) anchored the innings at number three, while Matthew Sampson-Barnes (77 not-out) also looked dangerous as their side racked up 214.

3/44 until Tim Hosking (39) and captain Marc Carson (29) steadied the ship with a 72-run stand.

But when Gerard Brady (2/9) removed them both, Bell Post Hill strolled through to a 28-run victory.

St Joseph’s will prove a much sterner test, with all-rounder Justin Foss starring last week, making a hard-hitting century before claiming four wickets in his side’s big win over Lara While Bell Post Hill looks like being competitive this year, Joeys should prove too strong.

This will be a close game but Highton’s experience in division one last year may make it slightly more equipped to win.

In an early season blockbuster, Inverleigh takes on Meredith in the division three match of the day.

Both teams enjoyed solid victories in round one and will be looking to take not only the six points but premiership favouritism as well.

Jason Murray will be a huge pick-up for Meredith, while for Inverleigh David Peel looks in ominous form after a fine century last week.

In a game that will go down to the wire, Meredith might just be too good here.

HOARDS of anglers flocked to the waters of Port Phillip Bay over the past week as snapper fever set in.

Clifton Springs remained one of the best locations, producing fish to 8kg.

Among successful anglers have been Chris Campbell with a snapper around 6kg and Josh Maloney who boated an excellent early-season fish of 4kg.

Fresh bait such as squid and salmon have been the bait of choice. Great numbers of squid have been holding over the shallow grass beds in the area, making it worthwhile putting in some time gathering bait before heading out on the snapper.

Anglers fishing the spoil grounds further down toward Leopold caught pinkie snapper and pike.

Some of the pike were 80cm and taken on trolled white hard-body lures and three-inch Gulp minnows.

Corio Bay continued fishing well after strong northerlies last week. Anglers fishing land-based encountered pinkies and silver trevally in close around structure.

Casting lightly-weighted soft plastics was the undoing of these weary fish.

Anglers who found a break in the windy conditions last week caught squid to 1.5kg off St Leonards. David Lee cast Yamashita jigs from the pier for a catch of squid to 1kg.

Other anglers caught reasonable numbers of whiting spread from Indented heads trough to the mouth of Swan Bay. Swan Bay also produced Australian salmon and pike on soft plastics casted along the channel edges.

Some of the salmon pushed 2kg, while some of the pike reached 90cm.

Angler’s anchored up and fishing into the night caught snapper to 55cm and gummy sharks to 6kg on fresh squid baits.

Queenscliff remained productive for big squid.

Anglers drifting out wide from the bight with larger jigs and fishing deeper caught squid to 3kg.

The harbour at Queenscliff produced pinkie snapper and trevally on soft plastics such as Gulp Turtleback worms fished on the tide changes.

Chris Scicluna and son Lockie ventured out off Barwon Heads on Saturday where they caught a school shark of 7.2kg as well as numerous pinks snapper and a 4kg gummy.

Anglers fishing the surf off Bancoora landed Australian salmon to 1.5kg. Spinning with 25g lures was best, especially in the strong northerlies.

On the freshwater front, Ballarat’s Lake Wendouree yielded brown and rainbow Trout to 2kg for anglers either casting or trolling shallow-diving hard-body lures.

Other anglers had success on the browns while fishing mudeyes suspended under floats.

Moorabool Reservoir fished well for redfin to 1.5kg on Fish Arrow soft plastics. The odd large brown trout was also landed.

Reports have filtered through of a severe algae bloom at Lake Bullen Merri. Hopefully it clears up quickly so anglers can resume hunting the lake’s exceptional Chinook salmon.

Clifton Springs should be again worth a shot for snapper out along the shipping channel and edges of the mussel beds this weekend. Casting soft plastics over the spoil grounds should be worthwhile for anglers seeking Pike and Snapper.

Freshwater enthusiasts might like to try Lake Wendouree, either casting or trolling shallow-diving hard-body lures for trout.

‘Elite’ program to foster talents of young local sailors

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN MORE young Geelong sailors could be striding international decks if a new elite training program is successful.

Royal Geelong Yacht Club (RGYC) and Barwon Sports Academy have combined to support promising young sailors from across the region to compete at state, national and worldchampionship levels.

The partnership program follows RGYC’s recent world champion-

ship victory at an International Cadet World Titles in the UK. Tom and Sophie Alexander won the prestigious championship with a string of first and second places, beating 60 other teams from around the world.

The new program will offer promising young sailors access to world-class trainers in physiotherapy, strength and conditioning, nutrition and sports psychology.

ager Rod Hagebols said the program was a “huge step forward” for young local sailors.

“Previously this type of support was only available to Victorian Institute of Sport athletes in Melbourne, requiring Geelong-based athletes to travel in order to access it,” Hagebols explained.

“Our challenge now is to encourage applications from across the Geelong, Bellarine and the western region.”

Barwon Sports Academy head Cameron Loftus said the program would ensure talented young sportspeople were provided with the best possible opportunity to reach their full potential.

“In addition to the outstanding coaching they are receiving currently, the athletes will receive strength and conditioning, athlete education, an expansive medical network, grants advice, gym membership and the chance to receive mentoring by past athletes.”
