Drowning probed THE tragic death of a 26-year-old Brisbane man who drowned at Sunshine Beach on Sunday 5 October, was the first beach drowning this year and has left the local community shattered.

The male surfer from Hamilton had been surfing at “Dogs Beach” about 500m north of the Sunshine Beach Surf Club about 11am.

Conditions were messy with some large sets and the man was surfing with one of his friends. His girl friend was on the beach at the time of drowning.

Police are investigating the death and early indications found the man may have been knocked unconscious by his surfboard, before drowning, although this was yet to be confirmed.

Sunshine Beach Surf Life Saving lifeguards collected the man from the water and carried him ashore where they attempted to resuscitate him using CPR. The man’s distraught girlfriend was looking on in shock, as her boyfriend could not be revived.

By JONATHON HOWARD A HEARTFELT appeal from Noosa’s hospitality community and a growing list of celebrities is rallying behind the family of Peter Maynard, who disappeared while in Bail during late August.

Peter went missing while on a surfing holiday at Nusa Lembongan in Bali.

Family members have since travelled back and forth to Bali - while Bali authorities remain committed to finding Peter.

Peter’s friends have described him as a highly regarded bar manager who worked at the upmarket Locale restaurant in Hastings Street.

The bar will stage A Night Out for Pete fundraising cocktail party and auction on Thursday 30 October from 6.30pm.

Masterchef food critic and TV personality Matt Preston will act as emcee.

Raffles and lucky door prizes will also take place with all proceeds from the evening donated to the Maynard family.

In a further contribution, Locale staff have kindly offered to donate their wages from the evening and food and drinks will be donated by local suppliers.

Manager of Locale Rio Capurso said he worked closely with Peter after they met 15 years ago when the two worked at Noosa’s former Lindoni’s Restaurant.

A Night Out for Pete - the staff and owner of Locale Noosa at Hastings Street will host a special fundraising event for the local Maynard family.

“Peter is more than a friend, he is part of our family,” Rio said.

“Since arriving in Noosa both Peter and his wife Kylie have worked in hospitality and they have given so much to the industry.

"Organising this fundraiser is a small way of giving back.”

Talented auctioneer Paul Sumner from Mossgreen Auctions will be flying in from Melbourne to auction a range of luxury items including Noosa holidays, jewellery, artwork, fashion vouchers, degustation dinners and more.

Fuel to petrol price fire

By JONATHON HOWARD FUEL prices at the Noosaville BP service station have remained the same for months, despite several dips below 140 cents per litre for unleaded.

Several Noosa motorists asked if Noosa Today could investigate why the Noosaville BP, on the corner of Mary Street and Weyba Road, has refused to budge from prices for unleaded of $145.9c/litre, diesel 160.9c/litre and LPG 96.9c/litre.

Noosa Today has also monitored the prices and found no change in the past month.

One motorist said he believed the BP service station was cashing in on tourism dollars - rather than following the fuel-based market trends.

Noosaville BP relieving manager Graeme Brown acknowledged that the fuel prices had remained the same for “sometime” but said the business was attempting to be as fair as possible.

RUNNER-UP on the The Bachelor, Noosa resident Lisa Hyde, has described her tumultuous journey to find true love as “incredible” despite the series being branded one of the most controversial in the Channel Ten line-up.

Following Lisa’s dumping last week, a rumour surfaced that she may be carrying bachelor Blake Garvey’s baby - rumours that were completely unfounded and that had surfaced via a social media storm.

The rumours were quickly quashed by Lisa via Twitter.

“I can confirm the rumour and I am definitely not pregnant with Blake’s baby... Lol,” the post read.

The final episode aired last Wednesday 1 October, and Sam Frost was named the winner with a proposal from smooth-talker Blake.

However, Blake and Sam’s engagement was short-lived after Blake broke off the engagement prior to returning from South Africa, where the couple swam with sharks.

It has since been revealed that Blake may have lied about his occupation after the mystery man was found to be the registered owner of a nude male entertainment company.

Speaking with media sources the baritonevoiced Blake, said he had strong feelings for Sam “just not as a romantic partner”.

“It highlighted that Sam is someone I absolutely love and care for but not in the way of a

romantic partner,” he said.

In more recent developments, Blake has revealed he may have found love once more, but would not confirm whether it was with Lisa or perhaps Jess.

The Bachelor admitted it would be “impossible not to feel something” for the other girls given the “emotional journey” they shared.

But while he was adamant he’d met nobody new, he didn’t clarify whether or not he had renewed a romance with someone he already knows.

Meanwhile, a heartbroken Sam appeared on Channel Ten’s The Project and she revealed that she knew Blake was not “100 per cent” into their relationship after the show finished, but she still didn’t see what was coming.

“I burst into tears to be honest - I was in shock,” Sam, a financial consultant from Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, said.

“I’m so numb, just trying to process it all.”

Fans of the show have since taken to social media sledging Blake and network Ten’s producers for withholding vital information about the characters.

Others have blamed the producers of the show directly for allowing contestants on the show, who they believed had an obvious agenda to become famous rather than finding love.

Luxury market slowly recovers

By JONATHON HOWARD NOOSA’S luxury property market continues to show signs of recovery after a high profile Witta Circle sale was finalised this week.

The five-bedroom waterfront property at 17 Witta Circle was owned by former Toll Holdings boss and chairman of the Essendon Football Club Paul Little.

The property was sold to Brisbane highflyer Dana White and her husband Tony for $6.5 million, according to Property Observer who broke the news of the sale.

Media outlets falsely named Mrs White as the president of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), who shares the same name.

The incorrect articles were subsequently spread across the internet, but were quickly retracted with a correction.

Little lost about $1.1 million on the sale having paid $7.6 million for the property in 2007.

The house went on the market in 2011 with a price tag of $7.2 million.

Home sweet home for Dana White of Brisbane who paid a cool $1.1 million less than the previous buyer Paul Little.

The property comes with five bedrooms, five bathrooms, a cinema and an office.

Barry Andersen at Rymar Properties bought the property for $2.6 million in 2005, selling it to Little in 2007.

The Whites own a house in Clayfield, the Brisbane suburb which was bought in 2009 when the family moved from Albury.

A HARROWING cliff rescue was carried out

by RACQ CareFlight helicopter crews at Rainbow Bay over the long weekend.

The helicopter crew was called to rescue a striken paraglider who crash landed at Rainbow Bay on Saturday 4 October.

The rescue crew was called to the cliffs of Carlo Sand Blow near Rainbow Beach where the paraglider was caught on a small ledge 30 metres above the beach.

The QFRS secured the injured paraglider with ropes from the top of the cliff before the helicopter crew winched their Intensive Care Flight paramedic down to the patient.

Once with the paraglider he was treated for serious leg and chest injuries.

The 46-year-old patient from Brisbane was winched into the aircraft and was flown to Nambour Hospital in a stable condition.

Previously on Friday 3 October, the CareFlight RACQ Rescue helicopter was called to locate and assist the Queensland Police Service (QPS) and Coast Guard in a search for a stricken vessel near Inskip Point, Fraser Island.

A man on board the sinking vessel let out a distress signal at around 9.30am and CareFlight was tasked to help.

The helicopter performed an aerial search for the missing man and located the stricken vessel which was then towed back to shore by Tin Can Bay’s Coast Guard.

Thankfully, the man was unhurt, so did not require transportation to hospital.

The helicopter and crew returned to base.

ARSON could have been responsible for the devastating fire that gutted the Cooroy Butchery on Maple Lane last month, as the owners strive towards re-opening.

Married couple Trent and Angela Kirkpatrick had been operating the butchery for nine years before a blaze tore through the building during the early hours of Sunday 21 September.

The couple were now in discussions with their insurance company and are determined to have the business back up and running within the next six months.

Police have also ruled out any building or electrical faults which may have caused the blaze, leaving arson as a possible cause.

Mr Kirkpatrick said the family had received a range of support from members of the Cooroy community and he extended the family’s gratitude for the support.

“We’re still waiting for building assessments to determine whether the building will be condemned, in which case it will need to be re-built,” he said.

Mr Kirkpatrick said the building’s owner was keen to re-instate the Cooroy Butchery back at 20 Maple Lane.

NOOSA insurance broker Sarah Fisher has again taken the helm of the Noosa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIQ) and she has ambitions for a united Noosa business community.

An impassioned Ms Fisher said she hoped to unite the local business communities to become stronger as CCIQ Noosa joined forces with Noosa Junction Traders and Noosaville Business Association.

Hastings Street Traders was also expected to come on board soon possibly followed by Tewantin Traders.

“Having all four business groups on the board will mean we have representation of all the business sectors in Noosa,” she said.

“This will enable us to work together as a united group, to achieve great things in our business community, and to provide support and assistance when needed.”

The re-elected CCIQ Noosa president said improving the internet infrastructure was also a top priority to help small businesses.

She said current internet set-ups were impacting business on the Sunshine Coast and a bigger, better and faster service was “imperative”.

“At the end of last year,

CCIQ Noosa received a grant from the Sunshine Coast Regional Council to conduct a survey on homebased businesses,” Ms Fisher said at the AGM recently.

“The information gathered from the survey showed that home-based businesses felt isolated and required better IT infrastructure to enable them to do business.

“From this information, CCIQ is planning to provide fantastic networking opportunities and to provide information to help business.

Ms Fisher said CCIQ Noosa had stepped up its own IT services this year by launching a new website and transferring member details to a new CRM. She said the core objective of CCIQ Noosa was to educate, network and provide mentoring to local businesses.

“We do this by providing quality networking events each month, CCIQ assist us with providing our members with education in the form of webinars and seminars, and so does our mentors,” she said.

The newly announced CCIQ Noosa board now includes vice-president JoAnne Oertel, treasurer Louise McNeich, secretary Nick Rutland and committee members Julien Cahn, Brian Turner, Sue Pollard, Lee Roberts and Helen Zelinski.

Tagged to beat a world record

LITTLE Cove was a hive of activity on Saturday morning as 55 avid Instagrammers took to the beach with cameras in hand to beat the world Instameet record.

The Little Cove Instameet was part of a state-wide attempt to beat the world record for the largest Instameet with more than 80 Instameets in action across the Sunshine State on Saturday.

An Instameet is a gathering of Instagramers at a certain location where the group take and share photos using a common hashtag.

One of Australia’s most popular Instagrammers, Pauly Vella, was on hand at the Little Cove Instameet to hand out photography and Instagram tips to the group.

Police were investigating the circumstances of the drowning and the man’s name has not been released as of Tuesday 7 October.

More than three ambulance and police cars converged on Sunshine Beach and there were frenzied scenes from concerned onlookers and media outlets swamping the grounds around the surf club.

The beach drowning was the first for 2014 on a Sunshine Coast beach and has

rocked the surf life saving community.

The drowning also puts a dampener on the up-coming summer season, with messages of caution now stronger than ever directed at swimmers and surfers.

Surf Life Saving Queensland Sunshine Coast regional manager Aaron Purchase told media sources that lifeguards were saddened by the death.

“They did everything they possibly could to give him the best chance,” he said.

Mr Purchase said surf conditions were “a bit messy” at the time.

“We’re not sure whether he was hit by his board or

dumped into a sand bank,” he said.

He said those involved in the attempted rescue were provided with peer support.

“Our condolences go out to family and friends,” he said.

Messages of shock and sadness have also been spread across social media from Sunshine Beach locals who extended their messages of condolences to the family and friends of the man.

Swimmers are advised to swim between the flags only, while surfers are told to surf to their abilities and not attempt rough seas.

Breath tests blitz on long weekend POLICE were out in force over the long weekend, with a number of operations to help keep the roads safer.

Operation North Shore blitzed the popular northern beaches where 4695 random breath tests turned up two drink drivers with low blood alcohol readings.

Thirty-eight traffic infringement notices were issued over the three-day weekend for speeding, not wearing seatbelts and driving without a licence.

Operation Lock It took place on Sunday and Monday throughout Hastings Street and Claude Batten Drive, which are hot spots for break and enters.

Plain clothes police officers patrolled the

car parks and found 12 unlocked cars. Local police are urging drivers to lock their car or risk losing their valuables.

Throughout the local region, 2018 random breath tests were conducted over the weekend with three drink drivers caught and 61 fines issued for an array of traffic offences including unregistered vehicles, driving without a licence and speeding.

Noosa Heads officer in charge Senior Sergeant Steve McReight said the results of the operations were better than expected, especially over a long weekend.

“While three drink drivers are three too many, it is much better than what we have seen going through the courts of late,” he said.

MADE of 18-carat gold and worth $175,000, the Emirates Melbourne Cup last week toured Noosa, stopping at local venues and helping raise funds along the way.

The Noosa Heads Surf Club was the first stop for the Cup with a charity breakfast in aid of the Nippers program on Friday 3 October.

Later that day, the Cup made an appearance at the Sunshine Beach Surf Club where locals flocked to pose with the impressive Cup. Guests were also treated to a talk by Wendy Green, the owner of the 1999 Melbourne Cup winner, Rogan Josh, and celebrated racing reporter, Tony Burke.

At each event, the Cup was delivered and set atop a stand, which was guarded under the watchful eye of racing officials. After the excited locals had posed with the Cup, while wearing a white glove, the Cup was whisked away to its next engagement.

Classic curves and gleaming chrome

By JONATHON HOWARD THE rumours that Noosa is home to some of the rarest classic cars on the coast were confirmed on Sunday, after an incredible array of cars were presented for the Noosa Beach Classic Car Show at Hastings Street.

The event featured more than 200 classic beauties and attracted hundreds of drooling car fans.

Among the big name autos were Porsche, Ferrari, Jaguar, Bentley and Ford – but it was a rare red Cadillac that stole the show.

In fact, it’s considered one of the world’s rarest Cadillacs and it made a special appearance.

Doonan resident Jerry Lefkowitz loves to cruise the streets of Noosa in his mint condition 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz in royal red.

Mr Lefkowitz said the car originally came from a museum in Arizona.

“The Caddy is one of only 99 ever made and is recognised by Forbes as being the third most collectable car in the world,” he said.

“We occasionally take the car back to the

States for it to be presented in shows.”

The ’59 Caddy came with more chrome and bigger rear fins plus a hefty 1959 price tag of $7400, which was partly the reason so few went into production.

Prices today for a 1959 (original Kensington Green) Caddy Eldorado Biarritz are listed for $299,000 on Ebay.

Other stand-out autos included a 1989 Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet and a range of other classics.

Noosa Beach Classic Car Club, which hosted the event, began in 1988, with the first event attracting a group of enthusiasts who assembled 17 cars for the first “Classic Car Show” in response to the Hastings Street traders wanting to promote the Hastings Street area.

Some of those first cars included a 1905 Renault, 1926 Bentley, and a 1926 Salmson race car. The next year there were 47 entries and 120 at the third year’s event.

Growth has continued, with more than 200 cars assembled and future growth certain.

One talented artist featuring at the expo is Maree Lawrence of Peregian Beach, who will showcase her unique sculptures.

Originally from New Zealand, Maree has been creating sculptures since she was young, selling her works throughout Australian, even creating a largerthan-life bronze statue for the New Zealand town of Old Waihi.

Maree said it’s the feeling of the clay that she likes the most about creating

They won’t be fixed in any short time.

But the koala destruction is something we can do something about. Drive more slowly and be aware that the Walter Hay drive and surrounds is a major koala corridor. I’ve lived in this area for four years and it seems motorists are simply oblivious to how many koalas are being killed or maimed on roads around Noosa, particularly at night. What’s the answer?

More signage? A lower speed limit? Or just a basic sense of caring? It’s the same with dog attacks, I’m astonished at how many dogs are just permitted to roam the streets at night.

Bring on the graphic photographs I say. The sight of the young joey clinging to its mother’s mutilated body is gut-wrenching but it’s necessary. Or is it just we’re preaching to the converted and motorists and irresponsible dog owners will just go on doing their thing until we have no koalas left.

I AGREE whole-heartedly with Mayor Jamieson and the team responsible for the two-page spread, “The facts about Eumundi, Doonan, Verrierdale and Weyba Downs” in the Eumundi Green (21 August 2014). There is not one point of substance to support a claim of a community relationship between the EDV area and Sunshine Coast Council - and inferring any SSC relationship, with the old Maroochy Shire and their more than a century of history with Eumundi and environs, is grasping at straws.

In direct contrast, simple common sense acknowledges the long-term ongoing EDV area relationship - quite disparate to points further south - with Noosa Shire. The three almost equidistant hinterland towns of Pomona, Cooroy, and Eumundi (EDV) through to the coast have always created community around the Noosa hub. It has provided regular access to all services and recreation on a distance basis alone, particularly over the last 40 years, as well as reinforcing common values and bonds of community, stability and sustainability. Values many of us have recognised and fought to protect - and want to see legitimised and maintained for future generations.

The truth is, a silent majority is just that, without a vocal thinking minority. We live in a unique place where beautiful things are easily destroyed by self-interest and poor planning - and that is why all residents of Noosa Shire should not be shy to tell their councillors, and write to Local Government Minister, Mr David Crisafulli: that a democratic vote on a boundary redraw is in the best interests of every resident of this area - preferably before we all find ourselves waiting at traffic lights at ... “Doonan Central ... ” “Eumundi South...?”

Magic needed I REFER to Case Smit’s letter (Noosa Today, 25 September) in which he states “we should feel sorry for all the people who marched, demanding some magical action on climate change”. I have read this individual’s countless letters to various newspapers and am constantly astounded.

Too often, climate change has become a political issue or an individual belief, rather than the scientific issue that it is. Climate change doesn’t care whether you believe in it or not.

Climate change does not cease to exist because a few sceptics, and even our own PM, dismiss it. This way of thinking is narrow-minded and, honestly, ignorant. Some 97 per cent of scientists would not support a hypothesis that has no scientific proof.

I agree there is no 'magical’ action on climate change. But to sit back and observe the consequences, which are and will be worse than Brisbane warming to Rockhampton’s temperatures, bleating that it is not man-made and therefore we should not take action against it is a disgrace. Perhaps it will not alter your lifestyle dramatically, but what about people who rely on the land and regular weather patterns to grow your food? And people who struggle with rising sea levels where you holiday? And when your golf course can no longer maintain its glossy green because its environment is so tainted by human influence, will you be worried then?

Mr Sonerson took this extraordinary snap on Thursday 19 September, at the AFL grounds on Weyba Road. “I see the magpie swooping cyclists around my home area but I have not been swooped,” he said. “First time I have been to this area and the magpie wasn’t concerned with a local chipping golf balls. I talked to this guy and he said he often lands near him but is never aggressive.” Mr Sonerson uses a Nikon D800e with a Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 lens.

Savings not passed on ELECTRICITY providers are not passing on carbon tax savings.

A few weeks ago I received a letter from my electricity provider headed “Great news about carbon tax reductions”. It espoused the “great savings” that I will see following the removal of the carbon tax.

Not being one to trust the evil electricity providers, I decided to check their claim, and, of course, it’s a lie. My next electricity bill will go up by 3.8 per cent! A few more calculations show that it’s even more perverse that that. I use 13 kWh per day; if I were a consumer who used a lot more, around 24.4 kWh per day, then my bill would remain unchanged. If I were a profligate consumer who used 50 kWh per day, my electricity provider’s claim would actually be true, and removal of the carbon price would reduce my electricity bill by 2.5 per cent. This pricing structure means that, not surprisingly, electricity providers actually encourage higher electricity use, and all the negative consequences that go along with that increased consumption.

Personally, I’d rather keep the carbon price, not have the price increase associated with removing it, and maybe do something towards reducing climate change, ocean acidification, and other consequences of the pollution associated with burning coal to make electricity!

Food wasted THE elected councillors of our new Noosa Shire have a responsibility to support and enhance the community and the environment.

There is more than enough food in the world to feed the entire human population. So why are more than a billion people still going hungry?

Children throughout the world do not have enough food to eat because the grain that they could survive on is being bought by overseas multinational companies to feed their greed in huge profit-making businesses, such as the inhumane factory farm proposed in the heart of our Noosa Biosphere.

The proposal is not a family farming business as purported in his application, but an adjunct to a multinational company whose profits go offshore and definitely don’t feed hungry mouths.

Do we want factory farming or sustainable agriculture? KFC won’t feed the world, but the

grain that is now fed to factory farms will.

Boundary rider THE EDV’s main aim is simple and straightforward - we want an independent Boundary Commissioner appointed to decide whether a boundary change is indeed what the majority of residents of Eumundi, Doonan, Verrierdale, Weyba Downs and Peregian West, want.

All the sniping and the “he said, she said” type of stuff we’ve been reading in the press lately would all cease with one simple directive - the appointment of a totally independent referee.

Why not put all the opinions, views, reasoning, and rants, of all of us to one side and listen to what an independent Boundary Commissioner has got to say.

Surely, we can all at least agree on that.

Don’t approve THE application for the Ridgewood meat poultry development should not be approved.

The industrial production of up to 1.38 million chickens per year at this site is not economically or ecologically sustainable.

Aside from the increased road safety risks on the haul route roads, the wastes and emissions generated on site 24/7 and along the route would have many negative impacts on people’s lives, health and property values.

The costs to the community, the environment and Noosa’s clean green reputation far exceed the benefits of supplying the private equity company that now owns Inghams Enterprises with meat poultry at $0.60 a bird.

Uncaring THE cruelty and inhumanity by our government regarding refugees arriving by boat is well-known and illustrated by deporting detainees to Cambodia, a poor and corruption riddled country. It seems to be OK to send people anywhere at all to evade our responsibility to care for them in our comparatively rich country.

But now, according to the Courier Mail of 1 October, the government is hoping to descend into absolute absurdity in that they intend, if they can, to classify babies born here in detention as illegal boat arrivals.

Illegality implies guilt, so now we are to have guilty babies. And now we are to have babies that are boat arrivals even though they have never been anywhere but here in Australia.

And although being born on our soil they will not presumably have Australian nationality. So what will be their nationality? That of their father, or their mother, or what? Or are they to be condemned to spend their lives in some sort of limbo? I don’t think our present administration would care if that were the case.

So much for our duty of care for helpless and innocent young lives.

Active auction heralds the market rise THE Richardson and Wrench Noosa in-room auction last Friday has been hailed as one of the best in recent years.

RICHARDSON and Wrench Noosa principal Peter Butt labelled the auction, held at Sheraton Resort, as very active and said the market activity should lead to an increase in house prices.

“The market is now very active in the under $1 million price range and stock is diminishing very quickly,” he said.

“Our market has passed the transition off the bottom and a stock shortage will soon lead to a price increase.”

At the auction, four of the 13 properties were sold and Richardson and Wrench Noosa coprincipal Shane McCauley said there is interest from buyers for all other properties on offer at the auction.

“There is interest on all the other properties from buyers who were unable to bid under auction conditions as they required finance clauses and other conditions such as extended settlements,” he said.

Shane said interstate interest had also increased, making it the strongest in years.

“This is a great shot in the arm for the Noosa Market. We expect further developments over the weekend,” he said.

Karen, we are looking to purchase an investment property and are unsure if we should buy a property with a swimming pool? Will we be able to charge more rent if the property has a pool? Kathryn S, Brisbane Hello Kathryn, most Queenslanders love swimming pools, of course it can be a great attraction for tenants, and also good for resale, but I would suggest you look at how long you

intend to keep the investment and do you intend to live in the property at a later stage.

If you want to reside in the property later then it makes sense to buy with a pool in situ. If you decide to buy a property with a pool then we recommend a pool service once a month with a qualiied pool company, they will check all the equipment and test the chemical balance of the pool water to ensure the tenant is keeping the pool safe for swimming. It is also a good idea to have a pool handover with the tenant so they fully understand their obligations, and this is carried out with the pool company.

The tenant pays for all chemicals and the landlord pays for the service and any equipment maintenance that is required.

So the extra rent that a home with a pool can attract‌ can be eaten up maintaining the pool.

Then there is the ongoing cost of Pool Fencing certiicates and inspections.

Dreams uncontained THEY are usually seen on board large ships carrying goods across the ocean, but the humble shipping container is now the latest sustainable building material in many unique, but functional, family homes.

The often discarded containers are a cheaper alternative to a full home construction and can be used to create unique, statement homes in most locations.

In Graceville, Brisbane, a three-level home built using 31 shipping containers sits among a street of traditional Queenslanders and has caught the eye of many media outlets including Grand Designs Australia.

Designed by builder Todd Miller of Zeigler Build, the family home was built using an array of recycled materials including 100-year-old timber railway sleepers and recycled Tasmanian oak perforated plywood sourced from the Brisbane Convention Centre.

Thirty-one shipping containers were used to create this unique Graceville home.

The four-bedroom, four-bathroom home was built in just 20 weeks and features a home office, rumpus room, gym, reading room, double ensuite and walk-through robes in the main suite and open-plan living and dining zones.

Large glass and timber decks on the upper levels overlook the pool and sun deck on the ground floor, while taking in the river views.

While the shipping containers, painted a neutral cream, feature on the exterior of the home, sections of the containers have been left exposed inside to create an eclectic industrial style, including the original container doors which open to the garage and gym.

Stunning timber floors add warmth to the steel home, while art has been incorporated into most aspects of the residence, creating a true masterpiece.

Mr Miller is no stranger to using shipping containers as a building material, having recently fitted out his own company’s headquarters with recycled shipping containers.

Set inside a large concrete warehouse in Yeerongpilly, Brisbane, the shipping containers have been used to create unique office spaces at Zeigler Build.

Moving on after trauma

By JONATHON HOWARD INCREDIBLE stories are beginning to surface from participants taking part in the Jetts Noosa 12Week Weight Loss Journey.

Christine Rayner (aka Charlie Brown) has had a harrowing nine months leading up to the Jetts Journey, after she was the victim of a savage assault.

She said she was determined to get her life back on track and she’s already off to a flying start with help from her Jetts’ trainers and teammates.

“I lived and breathed my work as a youth development officer trying to make a difference in children’s lives,” she said.

“But one day it all changed and pretty much destroyed me.”

Charlie Brown was the victim of a savage attack and she has since had to deal with both physical and emotional recovery.

But she’s determined to get her life back on track and to help others overcome their difficulties.

Charlie Brown said she had grappled with constant nightmares, suicidal thoughts, anxiety and felt like a prisoner in her own body.

“I take each day as it comes and face the challenges, not expecting each day to be the same,” she said.

She said she was now developing a support group which consisted of her GP, psychologist and her loving daughter.

“Then there’s also now the Jetts Journey team,” she said.

Charlie Brown's Jetts Journey has just begun and she's determined to turn her life around.

“No day is the same, and I’m thankful for both the physical and emotional support.”

Charlie Brown said she hoped to help others through her journey with the message, “don’t be afraid to ask for help”.

“I will never get an answer as to why this happened to me,” she said. “So I need to find peace and be able to move forward.

“I will always have the scare to remind me, but I have to not let it rule my life.”

She said the Jetts Journey, for her, was not so much about losing weight but finding herself again.

“Strength, confidence and being able to hold my head high,” she said.

“At the end of my journey, I’m hoping to become a role model to

help others and my journey may even lead to studying health and fitness.

“Enjoy coming on the ride with us over coming week and yes ... we’re getting our bodies pushed to new limits.”

River race gathers pace catch the action at the Noosa River along Gympie Terrace, The Lions Park Noosa, Harbour Town Marina or the Yacht and Rowing club.

The River Race follows a busy pre-season for the Noosa Outrigger Canoe Club, with a display at the Farmer’s Markets, two “Come and Try Days” and the recent Corporate Day. The club recognises that all of these activities couldn’t have tasted success without the support of club members volunteering their time.

By way of thanks, the club hosted a picnic in the park on Sunday 5 October, for members and partners, with more than 80 attending and enjoying the makeyour-own pizza lunch provided.

GYMPIE Terrace will be packed with onlookers for the inaugural Noosa Outrigger River Race this Saturday 11 October.

The event has attracted outrigger teams from all over southern Queensland and northern NSW, to battle it out over a series of long and short course events.

The River Race is the first marathon regatta of the 2014-’15 OC6 season for the south Queensland zone.

Noosa has seven teams competing across a field of 68 teams overall, with more teams expected to register this week.

Triathlon goes from strength to strength IT was around this time 33 years ago when I got a phone call from the news editor of Radio 4GY, asking me if I would I like to commentate the Noosa Triathlon.

My prompt response was ‘Yes’ of course, but then I asked ‘what was a triathlon - and where was it going to be run.’

I knew what a Tri was but when I started to compare it with the Channel 9 Wide World of Sports broadcast of the Hawaiian ironman, I just couldn’t visualise the event in then sleepy Noosa.

There was no Sheraton, only the Reef Hotel and believe it or not no Surf Club as we know it today.

I had just started work with Brisbane’s only sports radio station 4BC, so I was happy to get involved with anything connected to sport.

I arrived up late Friday afternoon, making sure I made the happy hour at the Reef, where all business was done in those days.

So by closing time (10pm - no late hours) I knew the race format, time of start, course, turning points and who was in charge of the day.

The only thing I didn’t know was who was competing in the event.

Of course, I was looking for some big names I could base my commentary around, just to make life easier.

The Lions Park looked pretty empty compared to what we’ll see in a few weeks time.

Bikes are at $5000 just for starters, with the hot-shots riding $15,000 machines, sure made the Malvern Stars/Ashbys look pretty ordinary.

There were no racks, the bikes laid down on towels with a pair of Dunlop volleys ready for the 10km trek to Tewantin and back.

A lot has changed over the years but the atmosphere and aura the event generates hasn’t.

The event still draws people from everywhere - even Noosa Today managing director Paul Thomas will be making the trip north to compete. Hopefully the organisers won’t have to leave the lights on, so he can cross the finish line.

Fellow columnist Ron Lane was spot on with his opinion regarding the very successful meeting between his beloved Noosa and Peregian Surf Clubs.

The 21 September will go down as a landmark decision in Noosa’s 86-year history.

Ron’s mates all 42 present voted unanimously to merge the struggling Peregian Club including Nippers into their club structure.

Despite having full support of their branch and state centre, it’s a gutsy move

by Noosa.

But I suppose club captain Joe Cirillo said it best: ‘’I believe we should take it (helping the club) on because that is what we do, we are lifesavers”.

Noosa will assist in a membership drive, and urge former members to rejoin the once proud Peregian Club. It is hoped with training programs, membership drive, business administration investigated and restructured, hopefully bringing its southern partner back to full strength within the next four to five years.

For those who don’t know, the Noosa Club got its start from a group of young men and families from South Burnett.

These two walk into a bar ...

By JOLENE OGLE A BURLY Australian man meets a wee Irish woman in a bar - it’s not the start of a bad joke, it’s the start of one of Australia’s best folk and blues duos.

Hat Fitz, an Australian guitar master, met Cara Robinson, while touring with his former drummer, Itchy‚ in Ireland back in 2008.

The pair hit it off immediately and have been making sweet music ever since, much to the benefit of anyone who happens to catch one of their live shows.

Hat Fitz and Cara are on their way to Noosa to perform at The J in November to celebrate the launch of their new album, Do Tell, which will be released in Australia tomorrow.

Do Tell follows on from their 2012 album, Wiley Ways, which Cara described as a more authentic album musically but said fans could enjoy a more solid sound with the new album, which incorporates more bass playing and a richer sound.

The blending of Hat’s unique, Australian, blues style with Cara’s hasn’t always been smooth, according to Cara.

But the end result is like an

Australian-Irish roller-coaster, taking you on rocking highs to deep-blue lows within the space of an album.

Cara says the duo continues to evolve as they play, write and perform music together, often bringing out new styles in each other.

“When we got together, Hat said ‘Oh, I thought because you were Irish you would really love traditional Irish folk music’. And I do, I really do, but I’m also really into motown and soul,” she said.

“But, Hat really brought the traditional Irish music out from within me. If we hadn’t have met, I wouldn’t have gone down that road. And, he is moving a little toward motown and soul.”

Cara said the duo had found themselves embracing story-telling in both their lyrics and on stage during live shows.

“It is where we get the ideas from and there are more stories behind (our lyrics). We can write from experience and that is evolving quite a bit,” she said.

The pair plays a multitude of instruments throughout their live shows and albums, but the strongest instrument of the lot is the voice.

Hat delivers a deep, grav-

elly sound that was made for blues and folk singing, while Cara’s voice is the epitome of soul; rustic, sultry and raw.

But this singer/songwriter is anything but vain, admitting she often works hard to perfect her art.

“I didn’t know I could sing for years. I have gotten a little more confident now, but there are still times I think I haven’t gotten it right and I need to go back to the drawing board and practice and approach things differently,” she said.

“I was very young when I started to sing and I loved the feeling it would give me.”

Cara laughs as she recalls her early love of singing, which often required the participation of her schoolmates.

“I remember when I was about nine or 10, I was very much into harmony, and on the 45-minute bus ride to school, I would organise my friends in their seats ... into like a little choir and I would make them sing,” she said.

WE woke to a view over rice fields and what sounded like an old lady’s laughter, coming from somewhere near the water features of the garden. “Ha ha ha…arrrh (sigh).”

I got out of bed and went to the window.

Perhaps the old lady was hidden from view behind the statuary. There it was again.

“Ha ha ha… arrrh.” Then, in a quite chirpy little voice, “Good morning!”

So she could see me but I couldn’t see her. I draped a sarong around myself and went outside to investigate. “Konnichiwa! Ha ha ha… arrh!”

It was getting weird. A Japanese bilingual laughing old lady who may or may not be invisible. What was in those mushrooms last night? I walked past the turtle pond and around a statue to a stone bench and found not an old lady but a bird in a cage – a beautiful myna bird. “Good morning,” it chirped. “Bye bye.”

We were in the most basic yet charming Balinese losmen I have stayed at in years, 100 metres down a lane off a busy street in the middle of Ubud in an arcadian oasis of calm. There could be no better place to be based during the frenetic pace of the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival. I had a busy program over the four days of the festival, with a book launch and two panel appearances, so it was great to be able to sneak away to the garden and our myna bird for a bit of totally mindless chatter, as opposed to the earnestly intellectual public talk shows.

Not that my appearances were at the pointy end of wisdom and knowledge (sariswati), that was this year’s theme, having been pigeonholed long ago as a “surf writer”. However I was delighted to be invited by Michaela McGuire and Marieke Hardy of the First Tuesday Book Club to provide light relief on their People of Letters panel show, alongside Dr Tim Flannery, film-maker Rolf de Heer, druggie punk lit star Rayya Elias, performance poet Carlos Andres Gomez and playwright Hannie Rayson.

The format of these things is that each guest has to write and read a letter addressing a particular theme. Ours was to be a letter to the thing that we wished we had written. Hannie kicked it off with an amusing letter to a film production company in Hollywood who had sacked her from a writing gig, Tim Flannery read a letter to his dying dad, and others went down the road of hand-wringing angst. I read a letter to a book called The Last Paradise, published in 1930 and written by a bloke called Hickman Powell who was obsessed with the bare breasts of Balinese women, as was I when I discovered the island for myself a generation later.

Climbing aboard the courtesy bus the next morning for my first gig, I was astounded to be thanked profusely by at least a dozen women of a certain age for having shared my profound insights. I began to realise that the audiences at this festival are in bliss, and they want to love everything and everyone. Which is no bad thing.

It was a week for mixing it up with literary heroes. At a cocktail party given by the Australian Consul General, Majell Hind, I was introduced to Robyn Davidson, who has built a hugely successful career on the back of one book, Tracks, published 40 years ago.

But the highlight of the festival for me was to have novelist Diana Darling launch my book, Bali Heaven and Hell, in front of a packed house in a restaurant perched on a cliff above a river. Diana’s 1992 novel, The Painted Alphabet, is in my view the greatest Bali novel, and it attracted rave reviews around the world.

She has lived in Bali for more than 30 years, now in a simple family compound with husband Agung, and her insights into her adopted culture are both witty and profound.

Nothing could have made me more proud than have Diana praise my book, which she did for 15 minutes, ahead of the debut screening of Panga Productions short documentary on the book, which held the audience spellbound. It was a magical night in a part of Bali that is still paradise.

Ingredients: 2 heaped tablespoons of organic chia seeds 1/2 cup milk (for a dairy-free option, you can use almond or coconut milk instead) A pinch of organic cinnamon 1/8 teaspoon of vanilla extract I teaspoon of honey to serve Method: 1. Combine the chia seeds, milk, cinnamon and vanilla extract in a jar or glass.

2. Mix the ingredients well and then pop into the fridge to set for half an hour.

3. Stir the ingredients again and then return to the fridge for another half an hour.

4. Top the pudding with honey and fresh fruit and, voila! Your pudding is ready to eat.

Cooroy-Eumundi A Grade hosted last year’s premiers Yandina on the first day of the 2014-'15 season. After winning the toss and electing to bat on a benign Cooroy pitch, things started to go wrong from the very first over for the home side. Experienced opener Mark Shepperson received a nasty blow on an already damaged finger and was forced to retire hurt. The day then went from bad to worse as the Cougars capitulated for the meagre total of 44 all out. A combination of poor shot selection and lack of mental application saw Cooroy humbled by a modest yet accurate Yandina bowling attack. In reply at stumps on day one, Yandina had reached 7-166, an overall lead of 122 with three wickets remaining. Best of the home town bowlers were leg spinners captain Mick Carman (3-19) and promising youngster Kaleb Hamilton who bowled a marathon spell to finish with 3-69. A lot of hard work will be required by the Cougars to avoid an embarrassing outright defeat to start the season. The match resumes next Saturday.

FOR the three surf clubs in our community Peregian, Sunshine Beach and Noosa Heads, there is definitely a positive atmosphere.

For our club mates at Peregian, patrols have started and with the total support of Noosa, beach safety is at its best.

The majority of Noosa's junior members are taking the opportunity to patrol on this open beach.

Apart from helping, it gives them the chance to gain experience that is not available on Noosa's Main beach.

During their patrols, board rescue work and basic surf swimming skills are practised, and with the ever-changing conditions the lessons are invaluable. So when volunteers are called, they are stepping forward in large numbers.

For both clubs it is a win-win situation.

Sunday morning was the start of the Noosa Nipper season. In what must be one of the biggest turnouts ever, some 400-plus Nippers hit the sand. With Nippers, parents, age managers and water safety officers, Noosas Main beach was almost in need of a traffic cop.

Noosa’s junior activities director Dave Glassock said: “This season we have added more fun events for our kids. This means that while learning surf safety they are also having fun. For those interested in competing there are training and coaching sessions during the week. By doing there is no pressure on the Sunday Nipper who does not wish to compete. We feel this gives a more balanced approach to our programs. We have to be organised, for this season with Noosa and Peregian working together we have some 600 Nippers to cater for.”

These numbers are good indication for the future of lifesaving in our district.

At Sunshine Beach it was a similar story.

Newly appointed junior activities director David Gleeson said: “We have 180 Nippers and this season we have a lot of new families and this gives us more in the 6/7 age group. Add to this a strong under-14 group and all is looking good. For the annual Rainbow Beach Nipper Carnival we have some 75 members wishing to compete. It is figures like this that makes the future of our senior club look good. At present we are undergoing renovations to the downstairs section of the club. This will provide a social atmosphere for our families to mingle and we feel this is vital for club morale.” Regarding the senior club, 25 people have now signed up to train for their bronze medallion.

Also on Saturday, junior members from both Noosa and Sunshine travelled to Alexandra Headland to compete for a place in the Sunshine Coast Representative

New captain Dan Davy lost the toss and was sent in on a green wicket, Cooroy lost early wickets to be in trouble at 4/18. The middle order batted well and recovered to be all out for 153, best batsmen Chris McGuiness 32 and a big congratulations to Nathan McDonald who made his first 50 for the Cougars.

Yandina where in trouble early losing wickets, some great bowling from Zac McBurnie 1/6 and Jason Hall 1/18, who were backed up by the fantastic bowling from the young lads in Darcey Harvey and Nathan to have Yandina in trouble at 4/47.

C GRADE

In the masters division of the World Surf Life Saving Titles held at La Grande Motte Beach France, the Noosa Club won a swag of medals.

In the ladies’ division, Allison Pegg won an incredible six gold and Alison Olander won gold, silver and a bronze. For Olander, these results have capped off a remarkable career which saw this lady start as a Noosa Nipper.

After graduating from the Nipper ranks into the senior club, Olander joined the rescue and resuscitation team, winning medals at both state and national titles, first as a cadet then as a junior.

Then on entering the senior ranks she went on to win a silver medal at the national titles on the single ski.

For Olander, whose father Neil is a life-member and past president, her grounding as a Nipper is a great indication of the work being done by this organisation.

New spring in their fishing step

5TH DIVISION Cooroy 5ths have started their two-day clash against Buderim in fine style. First gamer Karl Nightingale had a dream debut ripping the heart out of the Buderim line-up, claiming 7/44 with an amazing display of swing bowling. Karl and Johnno Lowth (2/10) had Buderim reeling at 6/26 before a spirited fight back saw them post 91. Josh Thompson also claimed his first senior wicket. In reply, the Cooroy openers, teen sensation Mitch Martin (22) and Phil “The Wall” Giblett (37) got the innings underway before both Dane Schrader and Josh Thompson played valuable knocks to push the total to 133.

The game is set for an exciting conclusion next week.

U16s

By JACK MANGROVE NOOSA has been a mecca for boaties and angler alike, the long weekend saw a great many boats and angler enjoying the fantastic spring weather. With so many anglers out there, it stands to reason there were some outstanding catches.

Starting with the river, the mouth saw some great flathead as well as tailor and trevally, and as the boat traffic increased as angler headed offshore, things got a little quiet, but the early morning and late afternoon saw the return of the bait schools and with them the predators that feed on them.

Further upriver, the Gympie Terrance section of the river saw a lot of angler picking up a nice feed of whiting and bream. Up around the ski runs again, the early morning fish was the best, with large flathead and jewies on the menu. The section between the lakes again produced some quality mangrove jack.

Offshore, the inner reefs were fishing well with Sunshine Reef, Chardon’s Reef, and Victor Bailey Reef all producing quality sweetlip and squire. A little further afield, North Reef was coming up with the goods, with nice snapper

Played at Palmwoods on a very unprepared pitch, Palmwoods batted first and got off to a shaky start with losing a wicket in the first over, that was where it stopped for Cooroy, dropped catches and having no official umpire made the LBW law become non existent for the entire innings.

Palmwoods declared at 7/266, best of the bowlers John Hope 3/45 Lachie Henbury 2/43 Dale Scanlan 1/15 and young off spinner Jarred Davis bowled superbly all day for 1/46, which is not a true reflection of how he bowled.

With only 40 minutes left in the day's play, Cooroy had to survive a fired-up Palmwoods attack, a minimum of eight overs had to be bowled, true to the Cougar spirit the side survived the eight overs without loss of a wicket to be 0/48.

Jarred Davis made 38 not out displaying every shot in the book and despatching the opening bowler to the boundary on eight occasions and his partner Ewan Davidson held up the other end superbly.

Ethan Jenkins landed this nice whiting in the lower Gympie Terrace stretch using a spiced worm. up to three kilos as well as perlies and cobia.

On the North Shore, with the wind dropping the fishing off the beach has been great and whiting, dart and bream are all filling gut-

ters up and down the beach. Good schools of tailor are making their way south; these fish are making their southern migration after spawning along the Frazer Coast.

The fish are a little leaner but

are still great fun to catch with the larger schools taking pillies and mullet baits.

It was a beautiful morning as the U/12As headed up to Maleny for the season opener. We won the toss and sent Maleny in to bat on a slightly moist pitch.

Early wickets were hard to come by, but finally Asher made the first breakthrough of the season with a good catch taken

by Jack. Congratulations to Marty for a good start to his cricket career with bowling figures of 1/6. A few too many sundries let Maleny get up to a total of 113 and being a couple of batsmen short, the side knew it was going to be a tough chase.

Some good batting from Brayden Forrest (14) and Oscar Long (19) gave the side a chance but in the end it just ran out of batsmen for a total of 82.

Next week should see the side at full strength at home, so lookout Palmwoods.

By JOLENE OGLE MOST 16-year-old girls are busy thinking about the end of year formal, but for Shania Herzog-Smith golf is the only thing on her mind.

“It’s my world,” she said.

“I’ve just finished playing 16 days in a row.”

Shania first picked up a golf club at seven-years-old, when her grandfather took her to a local golf club and she hasn’t put them down since.

From her early days as a junior at the Noosa Par 3 course, Sha-

nia has moved her way up to now play at the Peregian Springs golf course.

So far, she’s taken out the Ladies’ A-grade club championship at Peregian Springs Golf Club for 2014, qualified for the Greg Norman Junior Masters competition for 2014 and won 10 out of 11 games in the club pennants at Peregian Springs earlier this year, among a list of other achievements.

Coach Wayne Rostron, who works with a swag of talented junior golfers, said he’s enjoyed watching Shania progress from an

entrance level junior golfer to an elite athlete.

“Shania’s future is in her hands,” he said.

“She has a lot of potential.

“If she wants the life of a golf pro, she certainly has the ability and potential to get there.”

“She is extremely talented and it’s rewarding to see her achieve such great results.”

To say Shania is on the way to a stellar career in golf is an understatement, but this 16-year-old is humble in her success and said her goal is to simply play golf.

“I just want to play golf, I enjoy it so much,” she said.

“I’ve tried other sports... but I didn’t enjoy it as much as golf.

Golf is great exercise and enjoyable. I just love it.”

Shania is now busy getting ready for the Greg Norman Junior Masters later this year with three hour training sessions with her coach... but you will never hear her complain.

“I just enjoy getting out there and doing something.

“If I don’t play golf for a day or two, it does my head in… I have to go play golf,” she said.

How sweet it is - the tradition rolls on NOOSA HEADS BOWLS THE tradition continues. Back in 1987, then president Joan Barrett and her committee at NHBC came up with the idea of an All-Stars day for the coast’s lady bowlers, and to go with the day’s competition a feast of decadent desserts would be provided as enticement. All-Stars day has been a hit ever since and the 2014 edition, sponsored by Laguna Estates, was held last Thursday, attracting 26 top teams from the district. A special welcome was given to Palmwoods bowler Lorna Hardingham who was in the winning four in the inaugural event in ’87.

This year’s tournament ended in a tie for first place between a team from Pacific Paradise, skipped by Mary Nilon, and Pat Becker’s four from TewantinNoosa. They both came in with a score of 57 points.

Worth the try

By NICK THOMPSON NOOSA’S place on the world rugby map has been firmly established with a leading international official describing the club’s Sevens Festival as “world class”.

Thousands of fans packed into the club’s Sunshine Beach home for three days last weekend and many more tuned in as live, high definition television pictures were streamed around the world.

Viewers in the United States, Europe, and even tiny Pacific islands like Niue were all kept up to speed as 19 men’s and women’s teams battled on the field to secure the crown as Oceania Sevens champions.

At one point it looked as though crowd favourites Australia might steal the show, having taken a 14-0 lead over rivals New Zealand in the semi-final but the All Blacks Sevens team came back strongly with 19 unanswered points and moved into the final.

Then it was their turn to feel the pain as a formidable Fijian team swept past to win 21-5 and send their fans wild as they were crowned 2014 Oceania champions.

Consolation for the many New Zealand fans in the crowd came when the women’s team comfortable outclassed and outpaced Australia 31-10 in their final.

Will Glenwright, regional general manager of the International Rugby Board, was delighted with the smooth running of the largest ever Oceania Sevens tournament and praised the local organisers and volunteers for putting on a “world class event”.

“Noosa showed its capabilities when it hosted the women’s Oceania Sevens for us in 2013,” he said at a post-final party for the teams.

“So it was an easy decision to bring both the men’s and women’s tournaments here this year.

“Sevens rugby has a massive following in this region and I’m delighted that Noosa has delivered a world class event appropriate to that.”

Event director Dene Brooks said several of the international teams had already lodged firm expressions of interest to come back next year, having discovered the facilities and infrastructure of Noosa and the Sunshine Coast were ideal for preparation, training and recuperation.

TABLE TENNIS AFTER the excitement generated from the spring fourperson challenge semi-finals, we hopefully expected a repeat performance this week.

The Barracudas were originally short favourites after the initial qualifying rounds, however two losses late in the season plus a very shaky and extremely fortunate win in the semis had us questioning their status. However their prowess was evident from the start as they proceeded to produce their best once again led by Jordan’s measured defeat of Kye and a somewhat confident success in the first two doubles.

At 5-2 up there was a

sense of inevitability about the result and the season’s individual winners, Jordan and Jonas, not only clearly proved their position but closed out an emphatic win for their team.

Competition night is Wednesday from 7pm and we also have a practise session on Monday nights from 7.15pm. Social groups meet three afternoons a week. All sessions are held at the Bicentennial Centre, Sunshine Beach.
