CURLY, straight, dark or grey - bets have been placed on how Judith McGrath’s hair will grow back. She’s shaving it all off on her 70th birthday later this month and hopes to raise money to help women with cancer while doing it. “We were thinking of ways to raise money and I thought, I’ll do it, I’ll shave my hair off,� Ms McGrath said. “And then I thought I could do it on my 70th birthday. “I’m not nervous at the moment but I am intrigued about how my hair will grow back - I never had to do it during my treatment so it will be interesting.�

All money raised for her big shave will go towards the running of Heather’s Haven, a respite home in Powelltown where women suffering from the disease can get away from the hustle and bustle of life and spend time with the ones they love.

A breast cancer survivor herself, Ms McGrath is part of women’s cancer support group, Yarra Valley Pink Ladies, which provides support and friendship through the battle against cancer. She said that Heather’s Haven was donated by the husband of a woman in their group in her memory. “It’s just wonderful that he has provided us their holiday home to offer this to our members,� she said. “We try to provide food during their stay, too, so any money raised will go to that.�

A total of 19 people have stayed there in the past 18 months. “It’s a great place where these women, who are very unwell, can go and spend some time with their loved ones,� Ms McGrath said. “I’m hoping to raise as much as we can, but I’d love to raise $3000.�

Members of the group come from all around the Yarra Ranges, including Yarra Glen, Healesville, Wandin, Woori Yallock, Warburton, Ringwood, Launching Place, Coldstream, Mooroolbark and range in age from 36 to 86 years old. Ms McGrath will shave her head at Have a Chat CafĂŠ, (in the IGA building) in Seville on 23 October.

Big noise for leadership YOUNG leaders in the Yarra Ranges are able to roar thanks to State Government funding.

Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe announced that Yarra Ranges Council will receive $125,000 funding to support a local leadership project called ROAR. Ms Fyffe said that

the funding would help more young people in the area live healthy, active and fulfilling lives.

The ROAR Leadership Program engages young people in leadership opportunities including increasing their participation in local government decision making processes.

It also gives them the ability to

increase their network, skills and confidence for life after school.

The council’s executive officer for youth services Deborah Handley said that the program worked with schools to identify young leaders.

She said a recent program saw students work with a local primary school on the topic of cyber bullying

and how the older students had dealt with it in the past.

“It gives those in the program a chance to get involved in their community, but it also gives them the confidence to work as part of a group.”

The announcement is fully funded and is not an election promise.

CARDINIA Shire councillors appointed a contractor last week to deliver the Ash Wednesday memorial at the former kindergarten in McBride Street, Cockatoo.

Whytehall Services won the contract for the redevelopment project, which will use the original 12-sided building design as a feature for the memorial.

A building refurbishment, internal fit-out, landscaping and access paths are also among the planned works.

The council wants the memorial to be a destination for locals and visitors to reflect and learn about the 1983 bushfires and fire safety.

Cardinia Shire Mayor Graeme Moore said the Ash Wednesday memorial project meant a lot to the community.

“Tragically, the township of Cockatoo bore the full brunt of the firestorm with more than 300 buildings destroyed and six lives lost,” Cr Moore said.

“The kindergarten provided much-needed shelter for many residents during the devastating Ash Wednesday bushfires and so, understandably, is of great importance to the Cockatoo community.

“This memorial will create a lasting tribute to those who died or suffered losses during these fires and I am sure it will be a location of great reflection for many years to come.”

The site drew worldwide attention when Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana visited Cockatoo in the wake of the bushfires.

It continued to be used as an education centre for Cockatoo’s children until it closed in 2005.

A tree planted by Princess Diana during the Royal visit will be preserved and protected.

The project was valued at about $800,000 and the Federal Government provided a $500,000 grant.

Work on the memorial is expected to begin next month, completed by March 2015.

Mount Evelyn CFA will hold their annual garage sale on Saturday 11 October and with so many things up for grabs, why not head down between 7am and 3pm and

make an offer.

CFA First Lieutenant Rick Ventrella said the event was the fire brigades major fund-raiser each year and all money raised would go towards the upkeep of brigadeowned vehicles.

“In previous years, we’ve had up to 1000

people come down on the day,” he said.

“We’ll have a sausage sizzle and fire safety information tent up too.”

LILYDALE CFA captain Warren Davis has many chilling memories of the 2009 bushfires which devastated the region.

But Capt Davis said it was not always the most obvious sights that lingered.

“It was pretty emotional and very draining, because these guys were out constantly doing rotating shifts and they saw some things that were not very nice,” Capt Davis said.

“Some of the things I know I saw, being a father of three young kids, it is the small things, like melted toys and things like that, which play on your mind.”

Almost 100 CFA members from the Yarra Valley, Dandenongs and surrounding areas, including 19 at Lilydale, were awarded a National Emergency Medal for service during that horrific 2009 period earlier this month.

Seymour MP Cindy McLeish and CFA chief officer Euan Ferguson presented the awards at a ceremony in Yarra Glen.

“CFA members from across the Yarra Valley and Dandenong regions provided sustained service and support to protect communities during a period of great destruction and loss,” Ms McLeish said.

Suspicious fires probed

POLICE are investigating three fires in the Yarra Ranges, two that may have been deliberately lit.

Garbage bins were set on fire overnight on 1 October in Hill Road, Gruyere and garbage at the back of a factory in Canterbury Road, Kilsyth, around 6pm on 2 October.

Yarra Ranges CIU detective Sergeant Mark Smithwick said another fire at the Mount Lilydale Mercy College was also being investigated but police believed it may have been caused by green waste.

Most of all, it had a tremendous effect on the broader region, which was among the hardest hit.

“They worked hard and fought bravely to protect lives and property during a long and extremely difficult campaign.”

Capt Davis said Lilydale had recently inducted 10 recruits and its firefighters were already preparing for what was forecast to be a significant upcoming fire season.

The National Emergency Medal recognises the service of members during a nationally significant emergency.

The 2009 Victorian bushfires have been declared a nationally significant emergency, joining the 2010-2011 Queensland floods and Cyclone Yasi (2011).

Compassion is not always easy WE SEEM to be pulled apart lately when it comes to being compassionate.

We get angry quickly when someone stirs our sense of injustice and what we believe to be right or wrong.

Recently Justice Lex Lasry handed down a sentence that many thought was too lenient.

He said that he could see that this young man whom he was sentencing, even though culpable of killing three people while on ice, still had a future somewhere and could be rehabilitated - there was an outcry.

However, there was also an outcry at government money being spent on a court challenge.

At times we see people on the streets in a down state and don’t really know what their life story is but we often are quick to judge.

Yes, and they might be using alcohol, but maybe it is the only anaesthetic against the pain of life that they have.

Real compassion, which at times defies reason, was modelled by the compassion of Jesus and further modeled by Mother Teresa and St Francis of Assisi.

Some hide away and refuse to read papers and listen to the radio - well that is one way.

An alternate answer is to find a group that we can be part of who can

support and encourage us and to help put the ‘bad world’ news in perspective.

That group, of course, needs to be nurturing one rather than a militant group on a mission, right wing or left, radical Christian or Muslim and any other single minded self-serving entity.

Christianity for me does not exist in true form without the links with and the following of Jesus and His teachings.

His compassion epitomises the compassion that He calls us to.

The model He left us with was one of servanthood and we often overlook the fact that at the Last Supper He modelled the ultimate servant role by washing their feet.

Even though that was the custom of the day, the host normally hired servants to do it.

Don’t struggle on your own, get into a group, even a small group of positive and encouraging people where you can experience community in a constructive form.

One, for starters is a PGA (Planned Activity Group) run by the shire.

Church Life Groups would be another option.

Plaque marks garden creator

By JESSE GRAHAM A BELOVED community member was celebrated for years of work in making her town a better place with a plaque unveiling over the weekend in Upwey.

Michelle Jones was celebrated in an official unveiling of a plaque at the Upwey Community Garden on Sunday 4 October.

The plaque - which was created by local artist Fyona Mitaxa - acknowledges Ms Jones’s work in establishing the garden in 2011 and welcomes visitors to the garden.

Community Garden member Heather Liney said the unveiling

was a surprise.

“She’s a very modest person - I knew she would think it was a silly idea if I broached it with her,” she said.

“So many people do go unrecognised in the community - Michelle has put in effort for years, yet she maintains her enthusiasm.”

Ms Jones is also involved in the Food Swap, Ranges Organic Growers’ Association, Mountain District Permaculture Group, Garden Club and Transition Towns, among other projects.

Ms Liney said that, despite having a demanding full-time job and a large garden, Ms Jones is ever-

ready to help others and get involved in community projects.

“Her good humour and positive approach to all problems is particularly valuable,” she said.

“She thinks beyond the square to a bright future where we truly live together in a harmonious and abundant society.”

The garden plaque’s inscription notes Ms Jones’s efforts in establishing the garden.

“She tirelessly and persistently, with able helpers, brought this garden into being and has maintained it ever since to make Upwey more food secure and sustainable - thank you Michelle” it reads.

SELF empowerment is the best way to ensure personal safety.

The Mount Evelyn Neighbourhood Watch annual general meeting will be held on Thursday 16 October with guest speaker Kyoshi Andrew Roberts, CEO of Edge Martial Arts, speaking about martial arts for personal safety.

Mr Roberts’s martial arts club is to devoted to developing and training young people and adults about the leadership and communication skills taught through martial arts practice as well as the spiritual self-empowerment that is nurtured through the sport.

“I teach my students how to kick, punch and block but we teach it for insurance.

“It’s nice to know you have those skills there but we hope our students will never have to use them,” Mr Roberts said.

Mr Roberts will touch on stranger danger, bully busting and self-protection at the meeting and how to resolve a situation before it gets to the point of using physical self-protection.

“We teach our students the importance of understanding why people react to certain things and to always treat others with respect rather than exacerbate the situation,” Mr Roberts said.

Mr Roberts has spoken at Lions clubs social events about self-defence, conflict management and protection with his primary focus on conflict management and teaching about body language and dealing with situations before they have the chance to worsen.

“Learning about personal protection

and the customs that come with practicing martial arts has helped so many of our young students through some hard journeys in their lives and has taught them the importance of good decision making and building self-confidence.

“Martial arts is as much about kicking and punching for fitness as it is spiritual.

“A lot of what we do has underlying deeper concepts relating to bulling, confidence, self-empowerment and, most importantly, feeling good about yourself,” Mr Roberts said.

Mr Roberts has recently returned from a four-day seminar with motivational speaker Anthony Robbins to learn about dealing with situations before they worsen.

At Edge Martial Arts, Mr Roberts runs a leadership team with about 70 teenagers, where they discuss the effects of particular chemicals on the body.

That is the overwhelming message from Olinda CFA’s Elissa Jans ahead of the third annual Ridge Top Brigades Family Fun and Information Day on Sunday, 23 November at the Olinda Hall.

The day is a combined event between Olinda, Sassafras-Ferny Creek and Kalorama-Mt Dandenong volunteer fire brigades and aims to prepare the community for the bushfire season.

“We live in one of the most dangerous parts of the world and people need to be

educated to make informed decisions and they need to be planned and prepared,” Ms Jans said.

“There have been a lot of statistics since Black Saturday and there was one just the other week, where it said only three per cent of people write a plan.

“The average person doesn’t even think about it and thinks bushfires happen on TV to other people.”

About 300 people turned up to the inaugural Ridge Top Brigades Family Fun and Information Day in 2012 and that number increased to 1000 last year.

Ms Jans, one of the event organisers with Kalorama-Mt Dandenong CFA’s

Virginia McCallum and Sassafras-Ferny Creek CFA’s John Schauble, said she hoped to double that attendance.

“The idea is it’s a one-stop shop for people to be able to come and get everything they need to get their act together,” Ms Jans said.

“Living in the bush is a lovely thing, but with that comes responsibility.

“The more we can get people to understand your safety is your responsibility - not ours - the better. We will provide you with tools and information, but you’ve got to do it yourself.”

Everyone will receive a red bucket on arrival to collect fire safety information

brochures and there will be children’s activities and entertainment, including the Captain Koala and April Show, on site.

CFA and SES volunteers, DEPI, Parks Victoria and Yarra Ranges Council members will be there to talk to.

There will also be live demonstrations from Monbulk Fire and Rescue, St John Ambulance Victoria, Emerald SES and junior CFA members.

Lilydale Safety Wear is selling equipment at the event for those interested.

The Ridge Top Brigades Family Fun and Information Day will run between 10am and 3pm on 23 November at the Olinda Hall.

The author, who has lived in Mt Dandenong for the past 10 years, has recently published the novel which focuses on the search for a farmer missing from Hepburn. The first novel in the new ‘Rural Crime Files’ series, it centres of the complexities of human relationships and how far we would go to find the truth.

Wallace says she’s been addicted to crime fiction in film and print for as long as she can remember and has always wanted to write a series of novels.

The gallery, home to the Ferntree Gully Arts Society, showcased the work of several local artists on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 September.

The event also featured demonstrations of different art styles from many of the artists whose work featured in the show.

Celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, The Hut Gallery hosts a number of exhibitions throughout the year as well as opening its doors to the public every Sunday from 11am4pm.

Marian Lowe’s parents-in-law started the gallery in 1944 and she remains the secretary of the organisation today. She says that the gallery provides an opportunity for local artists to showcase their work as well as for the community to experience visual arts.

“We run a number of workshops throughout the year and everyone is invited to join in.

“There are also a number of exhibitions, so there is definitely a chance for everyone to experience what we do.”

The Hut Gallery’s Annual Exhibition will be held on Sunday 12 October at 2pm, followed by a celebration of its 70th anniversary. All are welcome and entry is free.

THE Friends of Tindale Garden have been going potty in preparation for their annual Spring Plant Sale on Saturday 11 October.

The George Tindale Memorial Garden in Sherbrooke is one of several managed

Friends president Rod Cantrill said plants on offer will include varieties that will add colour to any garden such as fuchsias, hellebores, spring flowering bulbs, hydrangeas and other perennials.

“The garden is abundant with colour in spring, with many of the plants people will see in the park also available to purchase to be grown in their own gardens,” Mr Cantrill said.

He said the George Tindale Memorial Garden had a special, personal quality about it, being developed by keen gardeners and very much a large home garden.

Friends members will be on hand between 10am and 4pm to provide advice on how to get the best out of the plants on sale and to share stories about the garden which Mr Cantrill said had quite a history.

The money raised will enable the Friends of Tindale Garden continue projects in the garden and Mr Cantrill encouraged visitors to support the plan sale and enhance their own gardens at the same time.

State boost for mental health

By KATH GANNAWAY FUNDING which will see the continuation of a partnership between Eastern Health and police dealing with acute mental health responses in Yarra Ranges has been welcomed by regional police.

The Victorian Government last week announced that Eastern Health would receive $909,000 as part of a new Mental Health and Police Response (MHaP Response) program.

Minister for Mental Health Mary Wooldridge said the funding was part of a $15.1 statewide investment over four years which would allow individual health providers, police and emergency services teams to develop their own, unique and local mental health crisis response.

Eastern Region Divisional Commander, Superintendent Graeme Arthur, said police had been working with Eastern Health as part of a trail program (PARTS) for the past two years where police and clinicians worked together in first response situations to mental health call-outs.

MHaP is a follow-on of that initiative for which funding into the future was uncertain.

Supt Arthur said while he hadn’t seen the detail of the funding as yet, any assistance which supported police in what was a 24/7 job for them, was very welcome.

The program involved a mental health clinician working with a police officer from Ringwood police station every day, covering the afternoon-night time frame when police get most call outs.

He said having a qualified mental clinician working to streamline a process which had in the past resulted in police taking a patient to hospital having to wait for several hours for admission, worked well. “What this does is streamline a lot of the processes where a qualified mental health clinician can do all the paperwork before you get to hospital and that’s been a great benefit for us to be able to get the person to hospital safely and healthily and then go on about our business,� he said.

Supt Arthur said there had been an increase in the number of call outs for mental health in the Outer East where, next to family violence, it had become a significant issue for police dealing with situations which can turn into critical incidents for both police and

Extra cash to boost schools

By CAITLIN MCARTHUR THREE local schools received a $1200 kick-start to their education initiatives this week.

New ovens, a classroom, a greenhouse and an outdoor stage area are just some of the projects which have been made possible by the grants.

The grants are from the Telstra Kids Fund and are a part of the Telstra Foundation’s one million dollar a year commitment to caring in local communities.

Healesville High School, Selby Primary and Emerald Primary School have been among those selected to receive the donations.

The grant of $1200 for Healesville High School will allow it to purchase and install a greenhouse to assist students completing horticulture, biology and sustainability studies.

Selby Primary has nominated an outdoor stage area for their grant while the extra cash will have Emerald Primary students cooking up a storm with new stoves.

Knox Churches Soccer Club also received a grant which it plans to put towards new soccer shirts for its junior players.

Selby Primary school principal Justin Butlers said the stage would be a great addition for the kids to use during recess and lunch. “Students enjoy performing, Selby’s got talent and this is a great opportunity for the kids to perform,� Mr Butlers said.

Mr Butlers said the money won’t cover all the costs and added the school had been working on other fund-raising for the project.

Supt Arthur said while police will always be part of the response, they cannot be the solution. “I guess what I would want to emphasise is that with any of problems we have, and ice is a big one, the expectation from the community and mental health is that police can solve these problems. “We can go and respond to an incident, but we need long-term solutions and strategies to solve these problems. That comes from agencies, the broader community, service organisations, council ... anybody who can provide support in relation to this issue and a lot of others so we can prevent - not just respond.�

“And not having netball has probably gone against us as much as not having kids around because if the girls aren’t involved, no one hangs around the club.

“We’re trying to make it a stronger football-netball club, not just a stronger senior footy team.”

Kee said the Brookers wanted to be a sustainable force, but to do so they needed to reignite their netball presence, which was non-existent in 2014.

The Brookers’ junior and senior football clubs have recently come back together and that’s already made a huge difference, but there’s still plenty of work to do yet.

“We just want to get the club right with the netball and the kids so that when we do come back into Division 1 we’re ready for it,” Kee said.

The Brookers are after both footy and netball players, junior and senior, to sign up to the club for their march back to Division 1. They’re also after a netball coach - either playing or nonplaying. For more information, call Craig Clarke on 0409 603 210 or Penne Asling on 0438 684 787.

FROM their third straight Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League (YVMDFL) Division 1 grand final appearance in 2012, Gembrook Cockatoo has had a clear fall from grace being relegated to Division 2 battlers in 2014.

But 2004 premiership captain and favourite son Craig Clarke has returned to the Brookers as a playing senior coach and hopes to bring with him some former gun team mates with the aim of getting the club back to powerhouse status as quickly as possible.

But Clarke, as well as president elect Damian Kee and reserves coach Darrell Maher are under no illusions - the Brookers can’t be a sustainable force unless their juniors, seniors and netball sides are all up and going.

Speaking to the Mail outside their Orchard Road clubrooms recently, the trio - as well as new netball co-ordinator Penne Asling - were clearly excited about what the future holds for their rebuilding club.

The 2014 season might have just finished but a rolling stone gathers no moss. The earlier they appointed Clarke, the earlier they could work on getting some other club favourites back in the green and white.

“You’ve got to get onto it early, talk to all the players and try to get as many back involved as we can,” Clarke said.

“I felt that was a thing I could do to help the club - getting back on board and trying to bring back the blokes who left.

“We had 20 players leave at the end of last year (2013) and everyone’s seen the impact that’s had on the club.

“We really thought if we could get a few of them back and start to rebuild a core, we could work from there.”

There are few players more respected in YVMDFL circles than Clarke, and even fewer as accomplished at the ruck craft.

The big man has plenty of footy miles under his belt now but his body is feeling good after 12 months away from the game and he can’t wait to get stuck back in.

Rick Causer is also signed on to return to the Brookers as a playing-assistant to his great mate after a year at Montrose in the Eastern Football League.

Clarke and Kee both agree that Causer is the sort of player others would follow back to the club.

But it’s not just the seniors that the Brookers need to keep an eye on.

AT EMERALD Golf Club last Saturday the fair dinkum stuff was about to begin. This was the first round of three in the Club Championships, so there was much practising and sledging before a ball was hit. I am not sure which of these golf pastimes young Broc Reynolds (15) took part in, but whatever it was, I want to do it next week.

He rolled into the clubrooms with an off the stick score of 76 to register a nett 61. This means that he won the October Monthly Medal and leads in the A Grade ranks both in the gross and handicap scores.

Graham White (14) is nearest in his quest for the top gong with

his gross 82 followed by Ken Hill (15) with 83 while they are square in the handicap section on 68.

In B Grade, it was Leigh Morison (18) who generally saves up his best for such an occasion and leads in both gross and handicap scores. He carded 84 off the beater for a net 66 to lead in the B Grade crew.

Nearest to him in the both the championships is Allan Ecclestone (19) on 90 and a nett 71.

It is hard to see that anybody else can make up the difference in the next two weeks but as someone once said, “Golf is a funny game.” That person must have had a helluva sense of humour because some of us were struggling for anything nearly

resembling a mild guffaw.

Once again it was a tight tussle for the ladies title on the first round but the usual suspects turned up to play with Brianna leading Joanne Carvill.

Wednesday’s Onerously Fractured Golf (OFG) using OFG handicaps, saw a win for Sepp Krummenacher (22) with 43 stableford points to end a run of seconds. Next came Dennis Fuller (13) with 39 from Mick Petrie (320 and Graeme Fergus (23) who both carded 37.

So next Saturday it is on with the club championships with some more sledging and missed putts stirred in with a generous spoonful of luck, both good and bad.

Athletes back on track YARRA Ranges Athletics is welcoming back members to the summer track and field where week one produced a perfect spring morning.

The fantastic facilities on offer for both track and field were inundated by more than 200 boys and girls aged between five and 16 years.

A highlight was the many kids who took advantage of the two free trials to make sure they like it.

Going by the looks on their faces organisers think they will make Yarra Ranges Athletics their home.

The walks were first up and these events resulted in two centre records, to Tammarah Brown and Claire Noonan.

These fantastic performances continued on through the morning with another record to Chelsea Thompson over 100 metres.

Other highlights were watching the younger athletes learning and trying new skills such as discus, shotput and the jumps.

All these new skills are the basis for most other sports because running, jumping and throwing are incorporated, meaning that athletics is a great place to establish core motor skills.

Mixed results opener

By STEVE BROWN FTGDCA ROUND 1 THE season opener saw some mixed results as Knox Gardens hardly broke into a sweat after they routed the Monbulk Hawks for just 62 runs at Arglye Reserve in the FTGDCA’s Reeves Shield.

Experienced bowlers Adam Wild (3/20) andTravis Mulder (3/5) did the damage with the ball and the match ended early with theFalcons losing only three wickets in their innings.

Ferntree Gully could not avenge last season’s heartbreaking semi-final loss to the eventual premiers Eildon Park, going down to the Panthers by 31 runs. For the winners, the association’s premier batsman Cody Morris started the season in top form with an unbeaten 79. Former Basin player Luke Bowyer returned to Ferntree Gully, however his contribution of 41 was not enough to knock the premiers off their perch.

Upwey Tecoma’s Hewitt clan combined well to outscore the Johnson Park Sharks at Fair Park Reserve to the tune of 23 runs. Mitch Hewitt (40) received great support from elder statesman Mick (40) setting the Sharks 154 for victory. Only English recruit Martin Weightman, hot off the plane with 37 gave the Sharks a slim chance.The Basin Bears, promoted from Decoite Shield enjoyed a tight tussle with a win over Knoxfield as Danny Rundle and Jake Best provided the backbone of the Basin innings. Knoxfield’s veteran Jayson Scanlan performed well with 3/18 and 46 runs, but it was Jarryd Debernardi for the Bears who stood out with 4/26.

Upper Gully’s Jay Colee continues to have the wood over Belgrave, guiding the Kings home by three wickets.

Colee (3/16) combined with uncapped leg spinner Robbie Birnie (5/47) and then piled on a half century to secure the win and a confidence booster for the Kings.

Meanwhile, congratulations to former Rowville batsman Phil Gillespie on his promotion to the National Domestic One Day panel of umpires as he will make his debut at the Bankstown Oval in Sydney. Gillespie retired from the game after snapping his achilles while representing the association in country week and commenced umpiring in Premier Cricket in 2009/'10. No doubt selectors have identified him as a potential international umpire after officiating in only 88 Premier matches.

Early wins are imperative for those who want finals YVCA WITH the football boots stowed away in the cupboard, the sun shone on the valley for the opening round of the Yarra Valley Cricket Association’s 2014/’15 season.

For some teams, round one offers the opportunity to blow off a bit of rust, while for others a prime opportunity to finally put practice into action after months of indoor training.

With Coldstream exiting from the competition’s premier grade, DJ Strachan Shield, the race for post-season action has certainly intensified as wins early in the season become imperative. Yarra Junction made a perfect start to the new season easily accounting for Mount Evelyn on the road.

Batting first, Mount Evelyn made the most of batting friendly conditions and looked on target for a large score at 3/96 courtesy of an excellent partnership between Gareth Fraser (57) and Luke Jones (29).

Unfortunately for the home side, they succumbed to consistent Eagles bowling, and folded like a deck of cards to be all out for 155 in the 33rd over.

The returning Steven Flutter proved to be an able replacement for some experienced departures leading the charge with 3/22, while new captain and reigning THR Drummond medalist Quinton Hodgkinson showed he is going to be another tough proposition taking 2/17.

With 200 a minimum score on the fast Mount Evelyn oval, the Rovers were going to find it tough to keep the Eagles under the target and this certainly proved to be the case. Flutter completed a great all-round performance making 90 not out, and with the support of a solid Marcus Hottes (51) at the other end, the pair didn’t give an inch. With a well- constructed partnership of 124, the pair led the Eagles to a comfortable eight-wicket victory in the 35th over.

The win provides the Eagles with the perfect start in their quest to reaching another grand final, while the Rovers need to get their act together after the disappointment of missing their first finals series in some time last season.

At Queens Park, Healesville, the Bloods hosted Hoddles Creek in what turned out to be a tight contest.

The home side batted first and patiently compiled a score of 9/145. Stepping back into the top grade, Mark Powell (54) and Aaron Violi (42) showed they’ve still got something to offer the 1st XI with key contributions to the final score.

In batting friendly conditions, the Bloods would’ve been aiming for more on the back of these contributions, however batting out the

overs is key and they would’ve been quietly confident of defending the score.

The experience of the Derix brothers ensured the Wombats had a manageable score to chase with Jeremy capturing 4/42 and Brenton 2/22.

Despite their lowly position last season, the one thing you could count on from Hoddles Creek was a battle with the bat and with a good start, a target of 146 was well within reach.

Luke Hethrington (42) has been a staple at the top of the Wombats lineup, and his patient and dogged approach provided the perfect platform on which to chase the score.

With no other significant contributions from the rest of the order, the visitors floated between glory and disaster.

In the end, they managed to keep things together to record a valuable two-wicket victory with two overs to spare. The brash Dillon Kerr was the pick of the Blood’s bowlers taking 2/24, while Dylan Moore provided good support with figures of 2/41.

The win gives Hoddles Creek the best possible start to the season after a trying 2013/14 season, while disappointed with a first round loss, the Bloods have something to build on in the coming weeks to rectify the loss.

The final game of the round was the most eagerly anticipated of the round with defending premiers travelling to Warburton who had improved their stocks since missing the finals last season. Seville batted first and compiled a wellpaced 6/153. After steadily building to 2/64 at drinks, wickets in hand enabled the Blues to kick on and post a decent total.

Tim Dwyer continued on from his epic Grand Final knock with 60, while he was ably supported by the reliable Ryan Akers who capitalised on his teammates’ work as his 35 not out added some substance to the score.

With the addition of the Lever boys from Yarra Junction, the Burras looked to have compiled a batting depth to match any in the association, however Seville captain Dean Troyhan (4/34) and his opening partner Matt Tilney, put a dampener on those plans early, restricting the home side to 3/42 at the drinks interval and a long way from victory.

However, with wickets in hand, and this depth allowing the experience of Mick Walker to round out the innings, anything is possible.

And that it turned to be as Walker’s unbeaten 56 guided his side to an impressive victory.

These two sides, along with Woori Yallock who had a first round bye, will be key players in the finals race in what shapes up as an intriguing season ahead.
