The Co-ordinator-General’s report now goes to the Commonwealth Environment Minister for a decision on issues pertaining to the Federal Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act under the assessment bilateral agreement.

Southern Downs MP Lawrence Springborg said the announcement that Emu Swamp Dam had been approved was great news for his community.

“Farmers and residents will be able to breathe a sigh of relief now that this project has been approved, a project that we have been waiting for, for 25 years,” Mr Springborg said.

“Obviously the council still has to go through the process of approval funding, but a major hurdle has been cleared.

The dam will underpin the Granite Belt’s future for generations to come.

“I’d like to thank council, local growers and the community for their tenacity and patience in pursuing the dam over such a long period of time.”

STANTHORPE families and farmers will have access to a larger, more secure water supply after Queensland’s independent Co-ordinator-General approved the $76 million Emu Swamp Dam project.

Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Jeff Seeney said the project would create up to 145 jobs during construction and secure Stanthorpe’s future water needs.

“This additional water supply, a new 10,500 mega-litre dam at Emu Swamp located about 15 kilometres southwest of Stanthorpe, will enable the region’s agricultural sector to grow and prosper,” Mr Seeney said.

“It will also provide an estimated $139 million injection into the state’s economy through construction and the operation of the dam and its pipelines.”

The former Stanthorpe Council had been investigating building a new dam since 2006 in response to requests from residents and farmers for extra water. Southern Downs Regional Council will construct the dam on the Severn River and build a 23km pipeline from the dam to the existing Mt Marley water treatment plant.

High drama after festival

By ALENA HIGGINS THE Brisbane organisers of a music and art festival held at Goomburra last weekend have condemned comments by an Allora police officer claiming the event should be re-named ‘Drugfest’.

Manifest event manager Renan Inal said he and his colleagues would re-assess whether to host the threeday event in the region again next year in the wake of the “hysterical” and “damaging” accusations.

Appearing in a local newspaper article, Sergeant Des Canning declared “organisers and the people who set this up should be absolutely ashamed of themselves” and strongly suggested they “apologies to the general public and road users” after police netted at least 25 motorists allegedly driving under the influence of drugs at a roadside detection unit at the weekend.

But Mr Inal said instilling a

“shock and fear” tactic and inferring all those caught were festival goers was plain wrong.

“It wasn’t just festival people who came down that road,” he said.

Sue Gordon, co-owner of Gordon Country, where the event was held, said suggesting businesses who hire out their venues and grounds are responsible for the action of lawbreakers is simply “ridiculous”.

“Gordon Country has an excellent reputation built up over many decades ... and just like other venues and operators who allow events, shows, festivals and other celebrations such as pubs, nightclubs, other festivals, etc, it cannot control the actions of those who choose to break the law,” she said.

“That is the role of the police who correctly, as they always do at all such gatherings, charge the offenders.”

Ms Gordon said the event took 12 months to plan with local council,

police, medics, fire and safety and there were rigorous compliance regulations, none of which were breached at the weekend.

Festivals such as Manifest provide “huge economic benefits” to the local community and are in line with the State Government’s tourism priorities, she added.

Mr Inal said it was made crystal clear in the festival guide that organisers did not support drug use at the event, and Sgt Canning’s comments had severely marred an otherwise successful festival.

Sgt Canning, who was off-duty for a number of days when the Free Times called for comment on Tuesday, contends it was “highly likely” someone would have been killed if police were not doing their job.

More than 1000 revellers travelled from near and far to attend the event, which featured international, interstate and local artists and musicians.

THE Wandering Warriors filed into town on Monday afternoon with a colourful grand parade down Palmerin Street signalling their arrival.

The group, comprising about 34 members of the Australian Special Air Service (SAS) Asso-

ciation, made a pit stop in town as part of their mammoth trek from Brisbane to Canberra to raise funds for Defence Force carers charities.

With a number of camouflaged military vehicles in tow, the weary walkers trudged the final leg of the day to Scots College where a fund-raising barbecue dinner and

presentation awaited.

John Felton, who helped spread the word of the group’s visit, said the Warwick community’s generosity didn’t disappoint.

“We raised more than $4000, which outgunned Ipswich,” he said.

The wanderers are expected to reach Canberra on 16 October.

LOCAL residents who benefit from solar feed-in tariffs will see their savings reduced from 1 October.

The Queensland Competition Authority (QCA) reminded customers in regional Queensland earlier this week that the 9.07cents/kWh solar feed-in tariff paid by Ergon Retail will soon be reduced to 6.53 cents to align with the lower value of wholesale energy after the repeal of the carbon tax.

“Repealing the carbon tax in July this year cut the cost of wholesale energy and therefore the value of the electricity imported into the grid from domestic solar panels,” said QCA chairman Malcolm Roberts.

“For the QCA, the basic principle is that a fair and reasonable feed-in tariff should be equal to the real value of the electricity sold back to the grid. Retailers avoid some costs by on-selling electricity from solar panels to other customers. The most significant avoided cost is the cost of buying wholesale electricity.”

The change to the 9.07 cent feedin tariff will not affect customers receiving the 44 cents solar bonus feed-in tariff.

Parks face the axe

By ALENA HIGGINS SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council has considered its first group of local parks amid plans to sell off or scale back maintenance of underutilised land.

Eleven parks were tabled to councillors last week, with five being spared any action, four identified as potential candidates for sale, and two requiring further investigation.

The list is the first in a series to come before council is the coming months as it steps up its parks rationalisation program ahead of its selfimposed February deadline.

In May 2014 council recommended it establish a park’s rationalisation committee to explore approximately 160 public spaces to uncover potential savings to its hip pocket.

Parks are assessed on 18 criteria, including strategic and cultural significance, proximity to other parks, community usage, impact on amenity, operational costs, ablution facilities, and whether the site was donated or gifted, among others.

Cr Vic Pennisi, who together with councillors Bartley, McNally and Rees make up the committee, said some green spaces would be “low-hanging fruit and no brainers” while other would required careful community consultation.

“We’re looking to identify strategic parks, strategically located that can service an area, where, rather than spread the dollars over 160 parks, we can funnel it into those strategic ones and offer a better level of service and infrastructure,” he said.

“Whether at the end of the process we move five or 50 on, we really need to go through the process to get it right so we know we have been thorough and haven’t left any stone unturned.”

Cr Pennisi said if council can get this process right he hoped it would turn its attention to rationalising surplus freehold assets.

“If we sold (surplus freehold assets) we would start collecting rates, we won’t have to maintain (them) and the money saved can go into cash reserves, create interest and can be funnelled into reducing debt.”

SOUTHERN Downs and Goondiwindi regional councils will share in more than $11 million dollars over the next five years thanks to the Federal Government’s Roads to Recovery program.

Maranoa MP Bruce Scott announced on Tuesday Southern Downs Regional Council and Goondiwindi Regional Council would receive $1,093,826 and $785,583 respectively this financial year and a total of $6,562,956 and $4,713,496 by 2018/19.

Heritage update SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council has agreed to remove four listings from the Local Heritage Register and include two others.

Councillors passed a motion last week to retract Allies Hall, the former Dalveen Post Office, the Killarney RSL Hall and the Tannymorel grain sheds from the register.

The listings added in Warwick are sandstone kerb and channelling outside Lot 1 RP889884 Percy Street and Leonards Trading Store.

Warwick banker bows out in ill-health

By ALENA HIGGINS THE owner of Bank of Queensland (BOQ) Warwick has announced the branch will close later this month.

Owner and manager Gary Kelly said he made the tough decision to step down following a recent heart attack.

“BOQ head office decided to close the branch after looking at their options following my decision to step down as owner-manager due to my recent heart attack,” Mr Kelly said “My decision to exit the business has been the toughest I’ve had Size Swag toMatilda make King in my life but I’m proud of what the current and past teams and

I have achieved over the last seven years but I also know that my young children, Holly, Melody and Jesse and my health has to come first and I need some time to recover away from the stresses of running a small business.”

Mr Kelly said accounts will be transferred to BOQ’s Rangeville branch which is also run by an owner-manager by the name of Charlie Aston.

However, he stressed he will be around until the branch shuts on 23 October to help customers transition to their new arrangements.

“My team and I are around until late October,” he said.

“I also have no intention to leave

Warwick and BOQ are allowing me to still assist with transition of clients post closure.

“I value the new and renewed friendships and business relation-

ships that have developed over the past 20 years since I came back to Warwick and I will always be around to help.”

“One has taken a role with a BOQ branch on the Sunshine Coast and another has a role outside banking lined up,” he said.

“The other two are still exploring their options but they, like me, are looking forward to a holiday first.”

Flood sirens are in place SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council has installed flood emergency warning systems at Killarney and Leyburn, as part of its long-term strategy to make communities as safe as possible from flood events.

Disaster management co-ordinator Mark Saunders said council learned many lessons from the 2010/'11 and 2013 flood events in the Southern Downs region.

“Of most concern is flash flooding because there is very little time to warn residents,” he said.

“Both Killarney and Leyburn are susceptible to flash flooding, so council is installing flood emergency warning sirens,” he said.

The sirens, one located at Killarney Fire Station in Ivy Street and the other located at the Leyburn police station on the Leyburn Forestry Road, are fixed sirens used to alert the community of an impending flood that may directly affect the community.

“The sirens are audible for between 915 metres and 1280 metres, depending on weather conditions," Mr Saunders said.

“Once activated, the siren will play a pre-recorded flood warning message, followed by a wailing tone similar to that of a commercial fire alarm.”

Council will hold community information sessions about the flood emergency systems on 11 October, at Killarney Senior Citizens Centre from 10am and Leyburn CWA Hall from 2pm.

A firm ‘no’ to fluoride

By ALENA HIGGINS A RESOUNDING ‘no’ has been the response to the Free Times’ ‘Fluoride Opinion Poll’ set up last week to ensure all residents, not only water ratepayers, have their say on the contentious debate.

More than 40 readers acted by sending in their response or by taking to email or the Free Times’ Facebook page to make their views known.

While the respondents differed in their locations across the Southern Downs, one theme remained consistent across the board: All bar one wanted council to stop fluoridating Warwick, Stanthorpe, Yangan and Allora’s reticulated water supplies.

Justin Russell rammed home his opinion on social media. “It’s a great idea putting a toxic industrial waste product into the water supply,� he said. “The real question is how much will the council save by not pouring it into the water supply?�

Terry O’Donnell advocated for freedom of choice. “I believe it could be made available (free of charge) in another form (tablets?) to anyone who chooses to use it and not be inflicted on everyone whether they want it or not,� he said.

Knowing the status quo will remain the same unless 50 per cent of surveys are returned to council, Damien Malcolm urged those who receive the questionnaire later this month to act.

When asked last week why they were unable or unwilling to provide the survey to these segments of the community, a council spokesman said: “Council agreed that residents who receive water notices will be sent the fluoride survey as they are customers of council’s services and should be part of the decision-making process�.

In December 2007, the Queensland Government announced mandatory fluoridation of all public water supplies serving populations greater than 1000 by 2013 following a review into the nature and distribution of tooth decay and dental fluorosis by the Australian Research Centre for Population Oral Health.

The review process included more than 30 experts, university, jurisdictional and peak-body representatives from all states and territories of Australia, according to Queensland Health’s The Use of Fluorides in Queensland policy.

The department’s position is that there is overwhelming evidence to support water fluoridation as a safe and effective public health measure for both children and adults and that fluoride alternatives (tablets or drops) are largely ineffective due to low levels of compliance.

However, anti-fluoride material has also been widely published, with Dr Marianna Pochelli arguing in an article for the New Zealand Journal of Natural Medicine in May this year that fluoride is a carcinogen.

Club is cuddling up GUINEA pigs and their owners gathered at Clifton Hall at the weekend as the Southwest Qld Cavy Club held its September Pet and Pedigree Show.

They are arguably the cutest and most placid rodent around so guinea pigs’ growing popularity comes as no surprise to club president Judy McNamara and her daughter and club secretary Nancy Oliver.

“They are absolutely beautiful and easy for kids even as young as two and three to handle,” Ms McNamara said.

“They are so gentle and they love to be cuddled.”

The pair helped establish the club in early 2013 after tiring of travel-

ling to Brisbane and Beenleigh to compete with their own entrants.

“We meet people all around the place that have little guinea pigs and once they find out we have a club out here they just want to come out and be a part of it,” Ms Oliver said.

“We welcome everyone.”

Baby cavies dominated at this month’s meet, taking out the sweepstakes and best in show.

“We’ve got some really nice young animals coming up on the table which was good to see,” Ms Oliver said.

Cash match call TENTERFIELD Shire Council mayor Peter Petty has called on the Commonwealth to match funding received from the NSW Government to upgrade Mt Lindesay Road.

Councillor Petty said on Monday that significant funds were still required to improve the section of road between Legume and Woodenbong to a “satisfactory standard” and urged the federal Northern Tablelands MP Barnaby Joyce to follow through with his election promise.

“Hon Barnaby Joyce MP made a commitment to the communities of Urbenville and Legume that he would fix this road during his election campaign and it is now time for this commitment to come to fruition,” Cr Petty said.

The state government recently announced funding of $2.38 million to augment dangerous sections of the road.

Tenterfield Shire Council also pledged $600,000 to the works from its 2014-15 budget.

The works, which started in August, are expected to be completed by June 2015.

Meanwhile, Mr Joyce announced on Tuesday that Tenterfield Shire Council would receive $740,207 this financial year and a total of $4,441,240 over the next three financial years for local road construction and street repairs as part of the federal government’s Roads to Recovery program.

Highway upgrades could be cheaper UPGRADES to the New England Highway at Bolivia Hill have moved to the next stage with the contract for developing the concept design and carrying out an environment impact assessment awarded to Hyder Consulting.

Federal Member for New England Barnaby Joyce said the Federal Government announced in the May budget funding had been approved for the project.

However, Mr Joyce hopes the project could cost substantially less than the initial estimates following the release of the NSW Government’s Bolivia Hill Upgrade Preferred Route Option Re-

port in February.

He said the Commonwealth would carry the major financial load, contributing 80 per cent of the overall cost while the NSW Government would fund the remaining 20 per cent.

“This upgrade, on the section of highway between Glen Innes and Tenterfield, will deliver safer roads for motorists and improve efficiency and productivity for businesses using the road to transport freight,” Mr Joyce said.

“The works will include smoothing hazardous curves and widening the road shoulders to improve road safety and lower the

risk of crashes through better visibility.

He said the preferred upgrade route was identified earlier this year as providing the best overall balance between engineering, environmental, social and value-formoney factors.

“The $2.7 million study to identify the preferred route was fully funded by the Australian Government,” Mr Joyce said.

“It’s great to see the preferred option for the Bolivia Hill project is expected to cost less than originally anticipated.”

lands Adam Marshall said planning approval was targeted for the end of next year.

“With planning approval, we can proceed to detailed design and inviting tenders to build the project,” Mr Marshall said.

Mr Joyce said the New England Highway served as an important economic alternative route to the Pacific Highway for heavy transport from Sydney to Brisbane.

Drivers unstuck QUEENSLAND motorists no longer need to display vehicle registration stickers, with the Department of Transport and Main Roads switching to an electronic system from 1 October.

The changes applys to light vehicles, including cars, motorcycles, trailers, caravans, light buses and motorised wheelchairs.

Motorists will still receive a vehicle registration notice via post approximately four weeks before renewal date but will no longer receive a car registration sticker in the mail.

Motorists can remove their registration stickers from 1 October, but will not be fined if they remain on display.

ROWLAND Street residents are breathing a sigh of relief after Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) rejected a medium density housing development proposed for the sleepy suburban street last week.

Councillors voted unanimously against the recommendation to approve the application for 39 dwellings at 11 Rowland Street, citing a number of reasons for their refusal.

Nearby Yangan Road residents Barbara and Brian Bokenham, who were in Stanthorpe last Wednesday to hear the decision, said they were extremely happy with the result, having fought the project in 2008.

SDRC had previously approved the same application with a string of conditions in February 2008, but the application had lapsed.

Ms Bokenham said the type of proposed housing was more in keeping with an urban development and was out of character with the existing dwellings and lot sizes in the area.

“It’s just under three acres and they want 39 dwellings which go right up to the boundaries - they would probably be built without eaves so they can get them even closer to the fence,” she said.

“When it came up to council before, the council actually wrote to those of us who had put in submissions on 11 March 2008 and there were a whole lot of conditions put on it and none of that has been addressed in this application.

“It’s just the same document - it’s

just been lifted out so everything had to be gone through again. The only thing different is that they have added a loop road.”

A Rowland Street resident, who did not wish to be identified, said the applicant had “got around” the 20 per cent private open space quota by including the duplex’s roofed patio area and the inclusion of a concrete path into nearby Shilliday Park.

Garbage collection and emergency access issues also emerged as concerns in the four submissions received to the application and one petition, which garnered 88 signatories.

In listing their reasons for refusal, councillors argued the application failed to comply with the provisions of the former Warwick Shire Planning Scheme, that it had previously refused similar developments due to density, amenity and institutional appearance concerns, and that the proposed development did not provide access to sufficient levels of physical infrastructure and community services and facilities.

The applicant, who successfully applied to the Planning and Environment Court to have the development application assessed under the former Warwick Shire Planning Scheme - which does not preclude medium and high density residential development with the Residential Land Use Area - can appeal the decision.

Mayor Peter Blundell and councillors Denise Ingram and Neil Meiklejohn were absent from the general meeting.

It brought a lump to the throat, even from the Wandering Warriors, most of who were in their sixties and averaging 40km a day each. Still a great effort.

Not happy I WOULD like to publicly declare that I am not happy with the replies I have received from council over some weeks.

Save Our Shire Ratepayers and Residents would like to make it clear that in reference to the query regarding determination of response from separate areas of Southern Downs, the mayor stated publicly that the two areas of Stanthorpe and Warwick would be decided separately as they have separate water supplies.

Our question related to how the separate areas’ replies would be identified and thus counted against those areas.

We do not understand the secrecy surrounding the wording of the preamble - unless, of course, council feels it has something to hide.

As for the supply of information to water connection ratepayers, are voters to be left completely unaware of the importance of their vote or is this perhaps the reason for the lack of transparency about the wording of the preamble.

The water connection ratepayers it seems are to be kept in the dark about this whole process.

Is council now saying that no attempt will be made to separate the vote from the whole water supply areas?

What’s On Images of disturbance images to create a mood.

Original photographs have been digitally altered on the computer to create a narrative that conveys a deep sense of melancholy or a surrealistic sense of humour.

Tom believes that photographic images can be altered and manipulated to create a new story.

“By layering my images, add-

ing texture and digital effects, my images create a mood that embodies the story I am endeavouring to tell,” Tom said.

The exhibition will have a unique appearance as the photographs have been printed on large sized paper sheets with multiple images on each sheet so that the work will resemble a film strip.

Award-winning artist’s show THE Texas Regional Art Gallery is excited to host “Texas and Beyond”, an exhibition by wellknown Queensland artist, Graham W. Smith.

Opening to the public on Tuesday 7 October, the show includes 37 works from the artist’s travels from around Australia and overseas. Graham’s art career spans over 40 years during which he has produced in excess of 2500 paintings. He has won over 150 first prizes in all mediums.

A practising artist in oil, acrylic, watercolour, pastel and mixed media, Graham holds regular solo exhibitions and has conducted over 120 workshops. He is a regular contributor to Australian art magazines, and an exhibiting member of the Royal Queensland Art Society and Pastel Society of Australia.

Visitors are encouraged to call in and view the Texas exhibition which will be on display until Saturday 15 November. All works displayed in the exhibition are available for purchase. Gallery hours are Tuesday to Friday 10am to 4pm, and Saturday 10am to 1pm.

FOR many, mental illness is a taboo subject and something sufferers feel they have to face on their own.

But while one in five of us can expect to struggle with mental health during our lifetime, stubbornly shame and ignorance remain.

It’s for this reason awareness campaigns such as Mental Health Week (5 to 12 October) are vitally important, according to headspace Warwick manager Sophia McLucas.

“Unfortunately statistics show one in five people will have some form of mental illness over their lifetime, which is quite a big proportion of the population ... but it doesn’t mean they can’t be productive members of the community,” she said.

“Mental Health Week is about trying to increase awareness and decrease the stigma some people may experience so they feel as if they are not alone.”

This year, a number of Warwick and Stanthorpe health organisations have rallied together to provide an array of fun, informative activities focused around this year’s theme ‘Make a Move Towards better Mental Health’ - which encourages physical activity.

Beginning with a community barbecue on Tuesday, the week-long event includes, among other things, mindfulness and meditation sessions, a walk for well-being, information and pledge day at Rose City Centre and Rockin EDGEFest concert at Weeroona Park, Stanthorpe.

Ms McLucas said research showed a direct link between physical activity and mental well-being.

PLEASE BE ADVISED Southern Downs Regional Council will be conducting roadworks on Eukey Road, Stanthorpe over the coming months.

Please note: The next stage of the Eukey Road widening will commence on 23/9/14 and is anticipated to continue through until 15/12/14.

Works will continue from where they left of in early July just beyond the Neville Lane intersection.

Speed restrictions and traic controllers will be in place for the duration of the works however motorists should only expect minor delays.

Works will include widening of the existing sealed width, and visibility improvements including signiicant works at the intersection of Storm King Drive to improve safety for traic exiting the Dam. Council apologies for any inconvenience and seeks your co-operation during this period.

Much ado about this year’s Shakespeare Festival ABANDONMENT of a bride at the wedding altar, false rumours of infidelity, trick confessions of love - there will be no shortage of action to keep audiences entertained when Much Ado About Nothing features as the main stage production at this year’s Shakespeare Festival at the University of Southern Queensland, Toowoomba.

Much Ado About Nothing is a tale of fun, romance, and dark humour which has made it one of William Shakespeare’s most beloved works.

And no-one is more ready to jump in and share the sheer joy of this play with audiences than Kate Murphy, who will take on the role of directing the main stage performances at this year’s USQ Artsworx Shakespeare Festival.

“Much Ado About Nothing is a great play, although I wasn’t terribly familiar with it a few months ago,” Ms Murphy said. “It is best-known as a comedy, but when I started researching it for myself, I realised

there were many darker elements in the play, and I wanted to build on those. There is lots of love and romance - but lots of lies and deception too.”

Much Ado About Nothing was written by William Shakespeare in the middle of his career, and is considered one of his finest comedies. Kind of like a lower East-side New York.”

“To get the part we all did a big group audition session for it. Myles (Benedick) and I did a dance together; we’ve worked together in past and are good friends, so it was easy to find a banter between us.

We acted like we didn’t want to dance but in the end we were like, “Yeah, okay, let’s dance!”, to a Grease song no less!”

Jazz Lane who plays Beatrice, Shakespeare’s smartest heroine, was first introduced to Shakespeare in high school (Warwick State High School). “I’m playing the very witty, very smart and very quick character of Beatrice. She’s a bit of tomboy; not afraid to fight back to the boys,” Ms Lane said.

There will be five performances of Much Ado About Nothing on the Shakespeare Festival’s main stage on October 2, 3, 5, 6 and 7, each beginning at 6.30pm. Pack a picnic, bring a blanket and settle in for a charming night of theatre under the stars. Tickets cost $38 for adults ($30 concession, $18 student, $14 child, with family and group discounts available.)

VW Dragracing This Saturday and Sunday Round 2 of the 2104 VW Magazine Australia Drag Racing Series will be run at the 1/8th mile Warwick Dragway track this weekend. The Warwick round is the birth place of the VWMA drag racing series and is still the calendar favourite amongst the drivers, crew and spectators. This is the 9th year the Volkswagens have come to Warwick to play, and the 1/8th mile makes for fast and close racing.

Track facilities also give spectators unprecedented viewing access and an up close experience with the noise and thrill of VW Drag Racing. The field comprises purpose built drag cars capable of 5 second passes all the way through to street registered daily drivers. Bunnies poised for glory as Doggies dare to spoil party

AND so there are two - but what a pair.

After 43 years the Bunnies are “this close” - they have a rabbit’s foot on the trophy but standing in the way of a history making win is a side that six weeks ago people had written off - the Bulldogs. They have been nothing less than tenacious in the finals’ series. The game on Sunday will have all the hallmarks of a gladiatorial challenge.

The Rabbitohs fans are confident their time has come. They head into this grand final more than warm favourites.

For only the second time in history South Sydney and Canterbury go head to head in a grand final and on paper it looks a classic. The prospect of the clash of these forwards packs is

mouth-watering. The “Battle of Britain” as Slammin’ Sam and James Graham go head to head one last time.

The Bunnies skipped into the Grand Final with a decisive win over the Roosters. They overcame a shaky start and as fans in the “Burrow” sensed glory, the Bunnies bashed, barged and stormed back into the contest with an attack that was brutal and unyielding. Sam Burgess earned himself one more game in the famous cardinal and myrtle colours before heading to Rugby Union. His try saving tackle on Sam Moa sparked the Bunnies revival.

Burgess gave his all against the Roosters, and fans can be sure he will leave this game with nothing left in the tank.

Greg Inglis has become the face of the club. On Sunday he must bring all of

his skills out of the kit bag if he is to deliver Souths victory.

Last week, the planets aligned and we saw exactly what this side is capable of. Bunnies fans will be praying their side did not peak one game early last week. Hooker Isaac Luke has been ruled out by the judiciary and is to be replaced by Apisai Koroisau.

Canterbury coach Des Hasler has taken six teams in the past eight years to the grand final - a fantastic record and the history books show his teams are not there to make up the numbers.

In comparison to Souths win over the Roosters, the Dogs/Panthers game was a scrappy affair - but scrap is what the Bulldogs do best and Souths will have trouble containing them if they allow

the game to get into an arm wrestle.

In typical Bulldogs fashion, they did what was needed to win against a gallant Penrith side. James Graham was uncompromising in attack and his defence was brutal. The Dogs showed great courage; in the end their ability to keep their cool and stick with Hasler’s game plan as bodies began failing delivered the Dogs victory.

There are plenty of injury concerns in the kennel. Captain Michael Ennis is rated by many no chance to take the field after fracturing his foot last week.

Halfback Trent Hodkinson is another who played on one leg against Penrith and will carry a knee injury into the final. In any grand final previous form and results count for naught.

The result will come down to the team who handles the occasion best and on whom the footy gods smile. I am sure all footy fans are praying that the game is not won or lost in the ref’s review box or by dodgy decisions.

Then strap yourself in for what promises to be an epic performance.

NOT that a grand final needs any more theatre but on Sunday rugby league followers and in particular long suffering Bunnies fans are in for a treat when 106-year-old timekeeper’s bell that symbolises South Sydney’s struggle to survive is rung at the grand final.

The bell represents not only all of the triumphs the game’s oldest and most successful club has achieved but also the journey the club has taken on the pathway to the 2014 grand final.

The bell was rung to start and finish the Rabbitohs’ first match in 1908 against Eastern Suburbs at Birchgrove Oval. It is the bell Russell Crowe paid $42,000 for at a function in 1999 to raise funds for South’s court case against News Ltd and for readmission to the NRL fold.

After buying the bell at the Save Our Souths dinner at the Convention Centre on 20 November 1999, Crowe said: “It will never be rung again unless Souths are in the competition”.

It is the bell that was rung when the Rabbitohs played their return match against the Roosters in 2002 after readmission to the NRL. It has not been rung since.

Crowe alongside the man who had donated it, Albert Clift - a former Souths player, official and the original Rabbitohs mascot in 1968 said after ringing the bell at that memorable return game that it would not be rung again until the club was in a grand final.

It has taken a while but on Sunday as Souths and Canterbury-Bankstown players run out of the tunnel at ANZ Stadium and onto the playing field, the bell is set to toll again.

If that doesn’t send shivers down your spine, then I don’t know what will.

RUBIE AND WILLIAMS SHINE THREE teams from the Summit Bowls Club played in last weekend’s SDMBA President’s Pairs in Tenterfield. Flying the flag for the Summit Club were Graham Rubie and Lee Williams; Michael and Tyler Sweeney and Kurt Empen and Wayne Thomas. Team Rubie and Williams who played outstanding bowls and through to Sunday went on to win the championship - on fire those boys.

Back at the Summit on Saturday, remaining members played for a club trophy. Winners were Valda Newlands; Eddie Zanatta, Attilio Zamprogno Vs Dale Barker, Bryan Brown and Ugo Bau. Great to see Valda Newlands in the winner’s circle - she is one of the club’s tireless volunteers.

The 2014 Apple Blossom carnival is just around the corner (25/26 October) and the club is seeking both sponsorship and volunteers for this flagship event. This year the headline weekend has standalone day competitions as well as an overall weekend trophy. Time to start organising teams.

T20 challenge THE Stanthorpe Cricket Association is putting the final touches on the wickets at the CF White and Sheahan Ovals and preparations are well underway for this weekend’s Bulls Masters T20 challenge.

Bulls Masters was formed in early 2010 by Jimmy Maher, Andrew Bichel, Martin Kent, Michael Kasprowicz and Ian Healy.

The aim of the Bulls Masters is to utilise past Queensland cricketers to help foster and develop cricket throughout Queensland. It provides an important opportunity for country communities often starved of top class cricket to interact with the greats of the game.

This weekend’s competition will showcase some of the potential future champions of the game. Teams from Darling Downs and South West QLD, Gold Coast, Wide Bay and South East QLD will play a robin format with a final to be held on Sunday afternoon. The DD and SW Suns will be joined by QC Bulls Player Ronan McDonald right-arm pace bowler who made a meteoric rise to State ranks in 2012-13.

McDonald, who made his first class debut at the MCG, hails from St George and is well placed to offer advice to some of the younger players in the Suns’ side like Dave Sullivan and Hayden Lanza who have ambitions to play at a higher level.

The T20 challenge will also be a wonderful opportunity for local cricket lovers to see and meet some of the Queensland greats of the game.

Canadian foursomes A CANADIAN Foursomes competition was played last weekend in Stanthorpe for the annual Howard and Sons Cups. Club president Stephen Kay and David Reeves of the McLeod Golf Club added their names to the magnificent Cup which has been played for since 1952. The pair won by the narrowest of margins over runners-up Michael Thompson and Geoff Patti.

In a tight finish, only a quarter shot separated the winners and runners-up.

Eric McLellan had best pin shot at 3/12 and Trevor Ludlow claimed 17.

Pro-pins went to Paul Mills at 1/10 - a great drive by partner Keith Green, approach by Paul to 60cm - but pity about the putting.

Craig Fossey claimed the pin at 5/14 and Stephen Kay at 9/18. Linda Kelly won the Ladies pin at 3/12 and Lyn Ludlow 17.

Run down went to Trevor and Lyn Ludlow, Rob Reeves and Mark McCosker and Craig Fossey and Brendon Barker.

This weekend, the October Monthly Medal and putting competition will be sponsored by former Coaster’s boys Rod Pettiford, Danny Folkers and Brett Lacey. A reminder that tee off is from 11.30am.

Runner’s-up Michael Thompson and Geoff Patti were narrowly defeated in Saturday’s Howard and Sons Cup. IS IT FINALLY OVER IS the “darkest day” in Australian sport finally over? The World Anti doping Agency has had its say on the ASADA investigation into the supplements saga. WADA took aim at the investigation process followed by ASADA, the length of time it took and the involvement of the Federal Government.

“WADA has determined that full scrutiny of the file revealed that the number of delays were directly the result of the lack of activity or decision by either ASADA or the Australian Government.”

The statement from ASADA went on to say, “WADA is not entirely satisfied with the outcome of this case and the practical period of the 12 month suspensions that will actually be served by the players. However, having fully considered all circumstances, WADA is of the view that an appeal would not advance the fight against doping in any meaningful way.”

Sharks captain Paul Gallen and 11 of his teammates last month accepted the bans that for most amounted to just three games out of rugby league.

Perhaps the darkest day in Australian sport has been the way in which the whole “doping scandal” was handled.

While there were definite lessons to be learned from the scandal, the Rugby League and AFL community will now be hoping this can be put behind them although one of the key players in the whole saga is still to face the music. It will be interesting to see if he manages to escape close scrutiny all together, after the careers of so many of our elite sportsmen were put in jeopardy.

CUTTERS CELEBRATE THE Killarney Cutters celebrated their back-toback premiership wins at their Presentation night last Saturday night at the Killarney Rec club.

There were few surprises when the awards were announced by captain coach John Trindall and president James Kelly.

Dion Galloway capped a sensational year with the Cutters to take out the 2014 Player of the Year after collecting the trophy for the Most Tries and Most points. Following the grand final, Galloway was named the 2014 BRL Most Consistent Player. Lee Jaye Cooper, who stood in as captain for the side when Trindall was unavailable, picked up the club’s best and fairest award.

The Players Player was Mick Brackin and it was no surprise that one of the most promising young players in the BRL Rohan Keogh was named as the Cutters Colt of the Year. Nicole Weir who acts as the club’s FAO and trainer was a popular winner of the Award for Club Person of the Year.

Although busy preparing for their end of season fishing trip, the club is already making plans to defend their title in 2015.

Numbers were swelled by a visiting group from the Indooroopilly Golf Club who played with and against a group of Warwick Golf Club members on Saturday and Sunday. An excited club president Gary Russell-Sharam was overheard to say it was “the best weekend I’ve ever had”. On Monday, the Warwick club welcomed a large veterans group from Emerald Lakes Golf Club, who played on Monday and Tuesday enjoying the course and the facilities.

The club is keen to attract these groups to benefit local businesses and the club. The staff at the Pro Shop is on hand to put together packages for visiting groups.

With his trademark grit and determination and many pairs of shoes Gilly has set off on his walk to raise awareness for the Asbestos Related Disease Support Society.

Gillmeister hopes to raise $100,000 for the Asbestos Related Disease Support Society through his walk. The not-for-profit self funded organisation provides support for those suffering from asbestos-related diseases.

Gilly became a spokesman for the ARDSSQ after losing his father, and witnessing first-hand the terrible toll it can take on a person, and those close to them.

“I wanted to help them out by raising awareness of their cause and raising some money for them as well, so we came up with the idea of the walk from Townsville to Brisbane.

“We talked about a few different ideas, but walking from one great Queensland rugby league town to another seemed like the best way to raise awareness for the cause.

There will be plenty of stops along the route for functions and interaction with local communities to spread the message about the dangers of asbestos, and the work of the ARDSSQ. Along the way, Gillmeister will be joined by sporting stars and local politicians to help raise the profile of his campaign.

The Former Origin Greats (FOGS) organisation have backed Gilly’s initiative, sponsoring the Walk for Awareness with a $20,000 donation and are urging all Queensalnders to get behind the Axe. BUNNY CAUGHT IN THE CROSS HAIRS ISAAC Luke and the Bunnies have been dealt a body blow as they head into Sunday’s Grand Final. On Tuesday night, the NRL Judiciary suspended the Bunnies hooker for a dangerous throw following a tackle on forward Sonny Bill Williams in the 38th minute of the game against the Roosters on Friday night.

The suspension comes as a shock not only to Luke and the Souths officials but also to the majority of Rugby League pundits who declared it not dangerous enough to warrant a player missing the grand final.

Unfortunately, the judiciary did not share the view. The panel rejected his defence that Williams had elevated himself in the tackle by “skipping” off his right foot and grabbing Luke’s shorts to pull himself up as he turned towards teammates and looked to offload.

The penalty of 150 demerit points and 50 carry-over points from a previous suspension has resulted in a two-match ban and denies the long serving Bunny the opportunity of a lifetime in Sunday’s game. It also means he will be unable to play for the Kiwis in the opening game of the Four Nations Test against Australia on 25 October.

The door is now open for a big game from his replacement Koroisau who deputised for Luke when the Kiwis star was injured for 10 weeks earlier this year.

The decision is sure to raise much debate in rugby league circles once again about the inconsistencies in rulings.

HAMPSTEAD FORM CONTINUES STEVEN Hampstead continued his recent run of good form on Saturday when he and partner Kevin Williams proved too good for the field in the two ball Ambrose competition at Wallangarra. Sponsors of the event were Sue and Taffy Edwards.

Peter Butler and Tony Murphy were runners-up in the vent. Taking the pin shots were Brendan McMillan at 3/15 and Mark Lynch at nine. Hampstead also had the Best Approach shot.

It was a great day for golf mixed with some outstanding golf shots. Following the work done several weeks ago, the course and greens are in excellent conditions and the club is hoping for another great turn out from members and guests on Saturday in the Monthly Medal and Putting competition.

IS THIS A SIGN OF THINGS TO COME? THE WARWICK Cricket Association is in desperate need of qualified cricket umpires following the retirement of five umpires last season.

Spokesman Col O’Brien explained that the association is desperate for more umpires to calling for umpires with the opening fixtures of the season set to begin next weekend.

O’Brien said that unless additional umpires were found it would come down to players umpiring their own games and that was not an ideal situation.

It is yet another blow to cricket in the area after long standing club RSL Diggers withdrew from the competition due to lack of players prepared to commit to the club week in week out.

The demise of Diggers will see some former Diggers players going to Allora 1 and several other teams. It also means that with a seven-team competition, there will be a bye each week.

None of this is ideal but it is a trend that is an unfortunate sign of the times.

Judy and Doug put on their President’s day on Sunday with a few shocks in store for the unwary. When bowlers arrived they found 30 sets of old bowls lined up like a platoon of soldiers, cobwebs removed, in fact the first time the bowls have all seen the the light of day together for many years. Bowlers were told to put their bowls back in their cars, and to unsettle them a bit more and take them out of their comfort zone. They were told that there would be two games with the first, skips leading and the second game leads leading.
