Five take five – alive!

It’s not over yet

By JONATHON HOWARD THE EDV Residents Group has refused to concede the battle for a boundary re-alignment is over, after the Minister for Local Government David Crisafulli said he would no longer consider the bid to include Eumundi, Verrierdale, Doonan and Weyba Downs into Noosa Council.

Media sources went into overdrive last week claiming Minister Crisafulli had quashed the re-boundary application, when in fact the minister could not make any formal de-

cision on the matter due to a lack of any application and an unwillingness from the Sunshine Coast Council to discuss the matter.

The EDV Residents Group remains on course and is preparing an application for submission to Minister Crisafulli in October, when it plans to pressure the State Government to consider the views of residents, despite opposition from Sunshine Coast Council and members of the Sunshine Coast Alliance Inc. A spokesperson for Minister Cri-

safulli said he could not intervene with council operations, although the unwillingness of Sunshine Coast Council to entertain the idea was a serious thorn in the side of any reboundary application.

Years of hard work and surveying undertaken by the EDV Residents Group has now reached a critical crossroads and the cause could have been a single letter from Minister Crisafulli to Sunshine Coast Alliance Inc members.

The letter, which was also sent to alliance president Steve Bennett,

revealed that the minister would “no longer proceed with the matter”.

Mr Bennett said the letter was a small win for the alliance, but he was willing to remain strong against any re-boundary application to include Eumundi, Verrierdale, Doonan and Weyba Downs into Noosa Council.

In June, the Sunshine Coast Council put forward a motion to block any attempt to include the four suburbs into the Noosa Council and Mayor Mark Jamieson has also reinforced that he would follow through

with any action required to block any future applications.

Mayor Jamieson said Eumundi, Doonan, Verrierdale and Weyba Downs had been part of the Sunshine Coast Council area and former Maroochy local government area for more than a century.

“Council welcomes the Minister’s news as we continue to service, support and resource these communities as we have done since 1890,” Mayor Jamieson said.

Academic puts the word out

University of the Sunshine Coast education lecturer Carol Smith says reading and writing are vital skills for life.

AN EDUCATION lecturer is urging Noosa parents to immerse their young children in language and literature or risk greater difficulties for their children later in life.

Government statistics have revealed this month that Queensland kids are falling dangerously behind in reading and writing.

The statistics paint a grim picture of Queensland parents.

It shows that more than 50 per cent of mums and dads of children aged three to eight years old do not regularly read to their children or participate in informal learning.

Three to eight years old is considered the key learning age for vocabulary, reading and some writing skills and when compared to other states Queensland ranks last for literacy competence.

University of the Sunshine Coast education lecturer Carol Smith is currently completing her PhD on preparing pre-service teachers to teach English and was the co-author of Literacy for the 21st Century, a Pearson Publication 2015.

Ms Smith said she could not imagine any parent not wanting their child to achieve well in reading and writing.

“Having these skills opens up the world (and) family involvement in the reading and writing process is important,” she said.

“Parents need to be observing their children’s development in these areas.

“Please speak with as opposed to ‘at’ children.

“Involve them in conversation and model good language use.

“Read books, poems, rhymes from the very earliest days and play with words in the car, at the dinner table etc.”

Ms Smith said the dangers of children falling behind were “limitless” and could result in systemic learning difficulties.

“There is a theory developed by Stanovich called the ‘Matthew effect’ (in which) the good do more and get better and those who feel unskilled do less and so fall further behind,” she said.

“Unfortunately, there is evidence of this occurring in schools.

“A further danger is that behaviours and strategies that are flawed and are sometimes used by those who are experiencing difficulty, take time to unlearn.”

Ms Smith said the impact of a child’s psychological development was immense and lacking confidence to communicate can lead to untold social difficulties.

“The issue of children learning to read and write effectively is a world-wide issue,” she said.

“What I saw and talked about in the USA at Christmas was no different from what we speak of here - increasingly children are coming to school at Prep level not knowing about story, fairytales and nursery rhymes and the like.”

Ms Smith said children were displaying lim-

ited literacy competence as they have no story time with mum or dad.

“Some children who have not been read to and spoken with have limited vocabulary,” she said.

“There are those whose understanding of rhymes, song and dance disadvantages them in picking up on the patterns of language which is so essential for ongoing language development.”

Ms Smith said she supported the federal government’s Best Start library initiative in principle.

“I support any initiative that immerses children in literature and language,” she said.

“I do have concerns which include getting some folk to the libraries when the activities can occur.

“I am thinking some families use the library very regularly as a part of their social, cultural, academic activity.

“The children in these families know about the pleasures and power of reading and writing.

“I hope that those who have not used libraries in this way in the past will see the range of opportunities that exist to learn and grow.”

Ms Smith said Australia’s education system needed greater monitoring.

“Undoubtedly, we have to look at the place that education is given in this country,” she said.

“How much is it valued and do we spend the same time and money on producing quality teachers and programs as occurs in some other countries.”

Headstart to be the best

By JONATHON HOWARD NOOSA Council will receive almost $186,000 to help expand children’s reading and writing skills to better prepare young kids for school.

Arts minister Ian Walker visited Noosa Library last week to launch Best Start, which aims to address Queensland’s ailing literacy levels.

Mr Walker said the money would help every parent, caregiver and young child in the community.

“Best Start will help mums, dads and caregivers to read with their children in a way that lets the children learn,” Mr Walker said.

“Our kids will do better at school if they start with a healthy vocabulary, which is helped along by being read to.”

Shocking statistics have shown that Queensland is now ranked sixth in Australia behind the other states for literacy levels among children up to three years old.

Mr Walker said the state-wide program, to be delivered through public libraries, would give local families the information, skills and tools they need to help their children develop early language and literacy skills at home.

“Just 10 minutes of reading by a parent each day can give their kids the start

in life that they need,” he said.

“This program helps parents of very young children know what they need to know to help their kids do well at school.

“Best Start had come from four years of practical research and evaluation of family literacy practice in public libraries and was part of the government’s strong plan to help Queensland kids be the best they can be.

“In the 2012 Australian Early Development Census, Queensland ranked sixth out of the states and territories for overall early language development.

“Research shows that if kids start school behind the eight ball, they think ‘I can’t learn well’ and they disengage and don’t achieve as much as they could.

“This is an evidence-based plan that will help Queensland kids learn at least the minimum amount of words in vocabulary by school age, which experts say is a range between 500 and 5000.

“Some parents need help to be confident readers, others a reminder that story time is an important part in our long and busy days.

“The Best Start program will help our kids and parents be the best they can be.”

Several residents have written to Noosa Today expressing their disappointment in those cyclists, who continue to use the footpath as a faster alternative to the congested roads.

Chickens won’t roost just yet

NOOSA councillors were expected to defer a long-standing application to construct an intensive poultry farm at Ridgewood west of Cooroy, pending several tough conditions.

The deferral comes despite council’s senior staff recommending the application be refused due to five conditions including the proposed poultry farm “does not comply with the overall outcomes of the Noosa Plan’s Mary River Catchment Locality, agricultural uses and transport, roads and drainage codes”.

Concerned Cooroy residents have run a fierce campaign against the application with hundreds of signatures against added to an online petition.

While the matter had been pending a decision for more than 12 months and was deferred by the previous Sunshine Coast Council, it is now closer than ever to a final ruling.

Present during Noosa Council’s general committee meeting on Monday, 22 September, was Cr Frank Wilkie (chairing the meeting), Cr Frank Pardon, Cr Sandy Bolton, Cr Joe Jurisevic and Mayor Noel Playford, while Cr Bob Abbot and Cr Tony Wellington were away on holidays.

Councillors discussed the specifics of the application for more than an hour before they agreed to defer the matter pending five conditions.

The conditions included greater dust mitigation, an alternative haul route through Cooroy, greater addressing of odour concerns and sealing of Top Forestry Road.

The final vote to defer was expected to be made during council’s ordinary meeting tonight.

It’s almost summer

By JOLENE OGLE THE surf patrol season officially kicked off on Saturday 7am sharp, with more than 190 Nippers taking to the beach to start their training and all life guards undergoing skill maintenance.

Sunshine Beach Surf Club captain Scott Summers said most of the preparation for the season is done during the winter months, which sees all equipment checked and updated.

Scott said there were no major incidents to report from the first weekend of the season but stressed it is important to always swim between the flags.

Club structures united for life

THE meeting held at 10am on Sunday, 21 September, at the Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club will indeed go down in the club’s 86-year history, as one of the most important ever.

For it was on this occasion that the 42 members in attendance voted unanimously to bring the Peregian Surf Life Saving Club, including their Nippers, on board as part of their club structure (Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club).

To take a step such as this is indeed a massive obligation, but we can relate with pride there was not the slightest hesitation from Noosa in doing so.

On the agenda for this special general meeting, motions to amend the constitution read in part; Proposed constitutional changes to incorporate members of the dissolved Peregian Surf Life Saving Club, and further on; that the club council endorse the amendments as documented in the notice of motion. The discussion regarding these changes, which were of the utmost importance, was responsible and positive.

At management level it was also confirmed that Peregian would have three directors as proposed, one for club management one for lifesaving and the third for Nippers.

One of the key issues discussed was the patrol obligations and this subject was handled by Cirillo.

“At present Peregian will supply six full-strength patrols and with our program and the support of Brisbane and Redcliffe the responsibility of beach safety is fully covered. All of this will come

under a separate patrol agreement. Also as part of our obligations we will be assisting in a membership drive for Peregian, and we would encourage any old members still in the area to think of returning to their club.”

“Regarding the Nippers both clubs will work in conjunction,” chairman of Noosa Nippers Dave Glassock said.

“There will be a lot of decisions to make in the next few weeks... we will be conducting proficiencies, formulating programs as well as conducting water safety training programs for parents and new members.

“For Peregian their Nippers will start on 12 October, one week after Noosa.”

All indications are that with training programs, clubhouse updates, membership drives and business administration to be investigated and restructured - bringing Peregian back to full strength – a period of some four to five seasons is to be expected.

Lot of noise about whales

By JONATHON HOWARD A GROUND-BREAKING new marine study to determine whether manmade sounds in the ocean are impacting humpback whales was launched at Peregian Beach this week.

The study is known as the Humpback Acoustic Research Collaboration and will take five weeks to determine how humpback whale behaviour is affected by noise from ‘seismic airguns’.

Seismic airguns are used by oil and gas exploration companies to locate potential shoals on the sea floor. The exploration ships use large compressed airguns that when fired

into the ocean rebound sonar signals to the ship’s navigational equipment and in turn map the sea floor.

The project is funded under a joint initiative by a private oil and gas exploration company, as well as funding from the USA. Although previous studies have been undertaken, this study will be the first of its kind to include a fullsized seismic airgun vessel, research ship with eight observers plus crew and eighty five more researchers and trained observers on shore.

Associate Professor Michael Noad, scientist in charge of the research from the Cetacean Ecology and Acoustics Laboratory, School of Veterinary Science at UQ, said there

would be stringent mitigation measures to ensure that whales are not harmed in any way.

Professor Noad said the east coast humpback whale population has bounced back following decades of hunting practices.

“There was a time in the 1960s when humpback whale numbers dropped to about 100-200 total,” he said.

“That figure has since climbed back up to around 21,000 and growing, which is an incredible turnaround.”

Professor Noad said the team was determined to get the research right.

“At any time, we have more than thirty-five pairs of eyes watching the

whales and their behaviours from seven different platforms,” he said.

“If they get too close to the ship with the air guns or if there is any sign of whales being distressed, the trial is shut down. We want to get a much better idea of how whales respond to these sounds, not just from a hearing perspective but from a behavioural perspective as well.”

The research is of interest to the seismic industry, which uses loud seismic sounds during oil and gas exploration, and also to governments and regulatory bodies.

Professor Noad said to date there has been no hard data available that provides any degree of certainty about the effects of various levels of

seismic sounds upon whales.

“This research, when concluded should be able to provide that data,” he said.

Professor Noad said the current clearance range for airgun usage was two kilometres in Australia, however the research taking place off the coastline of Peregian Springs could widen that buffer.

He said the oil and gas company respresentatives were invited to watch the research taking place, although they are in no way associated with the scientists.

“It’s important to note that scientists on this research do not have an agenda,” Professor Noad said.

Australian and international scientists will attempt to answer the age old question: Do sounds in the ocean impact humpback whales?

Australia’s east coast humpback population has made a comeback, but how are they affected by sounds in the ocean?

Drug charges A 26-yeAr-old man has been sentenced to serve one month in jail after pleading guilty to six drug charges at Noosa Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday. rory Nigel King appeared charged with five counts of supplying a dangerous drug and one count of possessing a dangerous drug.

The court heard King had a criminal history including five previous convictions for drug-related offences and for breaching parole.

King was sentenced to six months’ jail for each offence, to be served concurrently.

The sentence was reduced to one month with a parole date of 23 october.

Man’s big night out

By JoleNe oGle A 21-YEAR-OLD man has pleaded guilty to repeatedly punching a man in the head in an alcohol-fuelled attack.

Daniel Leo O’Donnell-Julin faced Noosa Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday charged with driving without a licence in an unrelated incident, public nuisance, wilful damage and assault.

The court heard on 12 May this year, O’Donnell-Julin drank half a bottle of straight vodka at a friend’s party before heading to a licensed venue in Noosa Junction.

Drink driving A 30-yeAr-old woman has been disqualified from driving for almost four years after pleading guilty to four traffic-related charges in Noosa Magistrates’ Court. rebecca leigh Crimmins appeared in court on Tuesday charged with two counts of drink driving and two counts of driving with a disqualified licence.

Crimmins was caught drink-driving on 5 June this year, when she tried to avoid a random breath testing site by doing a u-turn.

Crimmins was driving on a provisional licence at the time and blew a .39 per cent blood alcohol content (BAC).

Seventeen days later on 22 June, Crimmins was caught driving again with a BAC of .133 per cent.

The court heard Crimmins had previously been caught drink-driving in 2004 with a BAC of .06 per cent, .144 per cent BAC in 2009 and .129 per cent in 2014.

According to Crimmins’ defence lawyer, Crimmins suffers from a number of medical and mental health issues, but was keen to address her problems and had attended the safe driving awareness program.

Crimmins was disqualified from driving for three years and nine months, ordered to serve three, threemonth jail sentences, wholly suspended for 12 months, and 12 months’ probation with court ordered alcohol counselling.

“The transit centre is a hub of activity within the Noosa community and I am pleased to deliver on my election commitment to make Noosa safer.

“I have spoken to the Minister and he has confirmed he has written to residents who made submissions regarding the proposed boundary change.

“Minister Crisafulli’s decision is welcomed as it will ease the concerns and confusion that has been generated for many residents about the potential for a boundary change.”

Noosa Today attempted to contact Minister Crisafulli to clarify the situation and his media representative said the message was “clear”.

“The Sunshine Coast Council has written to Minister Crisafulli expressing an unwillingness to agree to the terms of any additional suburbs joining the Noosa Shire Council, and one of the terms from the minister was that both councils agreed to the reboundary,” the media adviser to the minister said.

In a media release, the EDV Residents Group said it was aware of various reports in the Sunshine Coast media alleging that the Local Government Minister had made a decision refusing the boundary change proposed by EDV. “EDV has not been informed of any such decision by the Minister regarding a boundary change and as far as we know no such decision has been made,” the press statement read.

Trade and Investment Queensland principal trade officer Patrick Hafenstein said the Ultimate Gap Year was a great chance to capitalise on one of Australia’s major exports; international education.

“Those messages they’ll send throughout the world... with those images and experiences that they’re having will... sell the fact we have a beautiful place and help build our numbers in the international market in the future.”

Member for Noosa Glen Elmes said the initiative is another step in building education in our state.

“Education and health are two things we really have to work on,” he said.

The five students will spend four weeks in Noosa learning English and taking part in surfing lessons, before heading to Cairns, the Gold Coast and then Brisbane to begin their internship.

Council mulls erosion fix

By JONATHON HOWARD EROSION is eating away the banks of the Noosa River, between Tewantin and the river mouth, and Noosa Council is considering whether to invest in advanced hydrodynamic modelling to stem the problem.

The matter was raised during council’s infrastructure and services committee meeting on Tuesday 16 September.

Councillors were asked to vote whether to request a detailed assessment for the development of hydrodynamic model for the Noosa River be prepared for consideration by council at the next budget review.

The council’s recommendation also outlined a tidal works application be submitted to the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection for the trialling of geotextile sandbag groynes at Noosa River Holiday Park located at Munna Point.

According to council reports, there have been ongoing erosion issues with the Noosa River affecting infrastructure assets and public lands, particularly around the lower estuary.

“These instances have been a result of naturally changing fast flow-

ing river channels, boat wash and flooding events among other potential causes,” the report states.

“Council has responded to these issues in the past as emergency works including sand pumping, placement of geo-fabric sandbags, construction of rock-walls etc.

"The latest instance of erosion is impacting on Munna Point and some low impact steps have been taken to try and mitigate further erosion on the site.”

During a stakeholder meeting on 26 August, it was revealed that carrying out a comprehensive hydrodynamic model of the river system including contour detection and flow rates would cost about $250,000 to $300,000, plus a further $50,000 to 70,000 to recalibrate the model every five to seven years.

Council concluded that all stakeholders were supportive of the concept of developing a hydrodynamic model for the Noosa River between Tewantin and the river mouth.

“Therefore, further detailed assessment of a project needs to be undertaken in order to present a proposal for council consideration at the next budget review,” the recommendation states.

By JONATHON HOWARD A GROUP of Noosa and Hinterland locals are devouring their way through Noosa’s amazing restaurant scene.

The Noosa Restaurant Trail consists of 19 members who sit down for dinner at a different Noosa restaurant every second Wednesday.

The group is celebrating almost 12 months on the restaurant trail, and organiser Kerry Finch has always been open to new guests.

“No one knew each other at the first dinner, and each week we welcome a new person or couple,” organiser Kerry Finch said.

“So not only do we get to try new restaurants first hand, rather than relying on what others say, we have all also expanded our circle of friends.”

The first restaurant the group visited was Mystic India at Noosa Junction, and the 23 others they’ve tried since have included Berardo’s, Embassy XO and Vanilla Cafe to name a few.

“We have been very impressed with all but perhaps two restaurants on our journey, which speaks volumes for the quality and variety

The next stop on the Noosa

Restaurant Trail will be Coconut Grove at Sunshine Beach for the group’s 12 month anniversary dinner in early October.

“The Noosa Restaurant Trail is not a closed group - and we’d love to see more people joining us in the months ahead - new blood keeps the conversations interesting,” Ms Finch said.

TEWANTIN resident Kellie Boyce is raising much-needed funds for women’s mental health this weekend.

Ms Boyce came second in Australia for her Liptember fund-raising efforts in 2012 and last year she came third.

“In the past three years, I have come first in Queensland for fundraising and I would be thrilled if the Tewantin-Noosa community would give me a hand and buy a Liptember cupcake this Saturday,” she said.

Ms Boyce aims to fund-raise for Liptember which goes towards the Centre for Women’s Mental Health and Lifeline.

“Women’s mental health is an issue very close to my heart,” she said.

“I have had chronic depression most of my life and it’s an illness I have to deal with and manage on a daily basis.

“I had severe postnatal depression after the birth of my twins and I have a significant episode about once a year on average.

I have a fair amount on my plate as a single mum, with three wonderful children, a full time job and part time study, but I choose to live a busy life with this ‘illness’.”

Women’s mental health is often

overlooked and postnatal depression affects 15 per cent of women within the first year after childbirth.

“I would be thrilled if the Tewantin-Noosa community would give me a hand and buy a Liptember cupcake this Saturday,” she said.

Ms Joyce will be outside the Tewantin Newsagency (107 Poinciana Avenue) on Saturday 27 September, from 9am.

By JONATHON HOWARD PARTICIPANTS in the Jetts Noosa 12-Week Weight Loss Journey were given a taste of the challenges ahead after a tough first workout on the beach last Saturday.

There were tears and heartaches as the eight participants faced the realities of losing weight and drastically changing their diets.

The eight participants have taken up the journey towards losing weight and turning their lives around, as they battle both the physical and

mental challenges ahead.

Journey organiser and Jetts Noosa franchise owner John Morrall, said he was overwhelmed by the response from the community.

“We had a range of applicants wanting to get involved and while it would be great to help everyone, we have reduced the number to just eight.” he said.

trainers it’s still up to our eight participants to make the change they have been wanting.”

Mr Morrall said he was looking for the participants to go the extra mile and that includes exercising on their own.

ER First Aid trainer Rod Kriz said the warm weather not only brings sunshine and longer days but an increase in drownings on beaches.

“With good CPR training, a person can help save a life,” he said.

“You never know when this skill will be called upon but successful CPR has helped save many lives in Australia.”

People trained in CPR and first aid came in handy for one man at the recent Noosa Show who collapsed at the bar after being served his first beer.

Noosa Show Society committee member Mia Hacker said two women jumped to the man’s aid, laying him on the ground before a show volunteer began CPR while waiting for an ambulance to arrive.

“Fast first aid and CPR being known by the community is so vital and just in this case, is surely to have aided in the man regaining consciousness and now recovering fully in

“There are many reasons why a patient may suffer car-

“If a patient can receive early CPR their survival chances are enhanced considerably, particularly if an autoexternal defibrillator (AED) can be made available.”

He said by providing CPR, a community member can help keep the oxygen flow to the brain, “which is absolutely essential to life”.

“It is important all people take the opportunity to develop and maintain CPR training at the numerous facilities on the Sunshine Coast,” he said.

HUNDREDS of Noosa and Sunshine Coast residents took part in the Climate Change Relay on Sunday 21 September.

The global awareness initiative featured around the world with reports of almost 300,000 people walking in New York to raise awareness of global climate change.

The local walk was organised by the Sunshine Coast Environment Council whose members have serious concerns about the world’s rising temperatures.

“Climate change is real, climate change is happening now and climate change will impact on every facet of our community,” reads the Sunshine Coast Environment Council’s website.

The relay was held over 12 hours and covered 50 kilometres, starting at Sunshine Beach at sunrise and ended at Kings Beach at sunset.

The event was started by a traditional indigenous dance performed by Gubbi Gubbi el-

ders – who are acknowledged as the traditional landowners of Noosa and surrounds.

Organiser and participant Allan Maclean said the turnout was amazing.

“It was great to see that so many people care about the future of our planet, for ourselves and future generations,” he said.

Organiser and participant Emma Menzies said the walk sent a clear message to the federal government.

“It is really important to tell the Australian Government that so many people are concerned and want action on climate change.

“We need to reduce our emissions and become a renewable-energy-powered clean tech economy,” she said.

Others used stronger language, including Raili Zielinski, who said non-believers needed to “wake up”.

“We all need to wake up to climate change and how we need to change our lives,” he said.

LETTERS Cash crisis THERE is little doubt that the Noosa Council is in financial turmoil. Austerity programs instigated by Mayor Playford, come as a consequence of council’s inability to meet the de-amalgamation costs to give rebirth to the Noosa Council.

The true costs to re-establish the Noosa Council, were so far from the mark, it begs the question if the State Government was deceived in giving approval for the de-amalgamation process to take place. The proponents for a new Noosa Council, the Noosa Independence Alliance led by Noel Playford stated to the Queensland Treasury Corporation (QTC), Noosa required a new computer system at a cost of $250,000 compared with the QTC estimate of $4 million.

The eventual cost for the computers in January 2014 was $1.6 million which then blew out to $2.3 million by June 2014 with a further $600,000 to be spent this year.

Mayor Playford continues to publicly claim that de-amalgamation costs were no more than $2.5 million, despite the fact that Noosa Council had at February 2014 taken up a loan of $12 million from QTC to cover de-amalgamation costs. If de-amalgamation costs were $2.5 million, why did council borrow $12 million and will council be able to repay this loan in December 2014 as required by QTC? Perhaps the $22 million ransom Noosa Council has with the Sunshine Coast Council is to keep the Noosa Council financially afloat?

Did he inform any of the businesses in Eumundi, his electorate, that the event was taking place? Not one. (Forget about Doonan, Verrierdale and Weyba Downs, they don’t matter at all.)

So, only a few months ago, the Noosa Hinterland wasn’t just the opposite of “vital”, it wasn’t even on the map.

Conclusion: it’s official, the Noosa Hinterland is definitely not a part of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

Not that warm WE SHOULD feel sorry for all those people who marched, demanding some magical “action on climate change”. The mass media (including your newspaper), schools and universities keep telling us that we humans are guilty of warming the planet when, in fact it hasn’t warmed for almost two decades even though carbon dioxide emissions have continued to rise. It is no wonder that people feel that their future and that of their children and grandchildren will be ruined by our use of fossil fuels.

Realistically, even if the most dire predictions were to come true, Brisbane’s climate would over the course of a century, gradually become more like that of Rockhampton - is that really such a catastrophe that we should lose sleep over it, march in protest and spend billions of dollars in an attempt to prevent it?

Cost of water I AM very concerned at the current cost of water and I applaud this paper for focusing on the issue. I do believe that a good starting point for querying the costs that customers pay would be with our local council. Before Unity Water took over the supply of water our local councils had this role and the cost of water was included in our rates. Since Noosa Council no longer supply, service or maintain the local water supply they do not obviously have the costs associated including staff, which I imagine would have been a large part of their budget. Unfortunately for ratepayers these savings have not been seen in a reduction of our rates.

I know that Noosa Council would probably say that it was Sunshine Coast Council policy and they have just inherited the rate structure.

But surely they have less staff and costs than before almalgamation.

It is somewhat bewildering that at the very least the proportion of our rates that was water usage, supply, sewerage etc was not reduced from our rates. Before all the blame is apportioned to Unity Water I believe that Noosa Council should explain clearly to ratepayers why their cost savings have not been passed on to ratepayers especially when we are currently paying such a high cost for water.

Better and better I’D LIKE to congratulate and say thankyou to the very hard-working council workers who have been working at the median strip on the approach to, and in Peregian Beach.

Each time I travel that route over the past three weeks or so I notice it looking more beautiful. There has been much planting and mulching. It looks wonderfully welcoming.

Now I wish they would do something similar on the approach to “The Junction” on the strip that divides David Low way and the ‘service road’ beneath it on the western side.

I HAVE been fighting with Unity Water for the past five years. They are so undemocratic, it is their way and their way only. I have been charged sewerage access fees for over two years while there was NO connection to the system, I haven’t paid for that time and now it’s incurring outstanding fees.

I sent an email to their ombudsman regarding this and my other concern I have with them, they charge now a sewerage access fee as well as per litre dump charges, while there is NO device in the system that counts the litres you put down the line, so to me it is illegal to charge for something per increment if you have NO way of knowing the number of increments, they just assume that 90 per cent of your water consumption goes down the drain, now to me

Doonan resident Jai Lott used his iPhone and telescope to capture this week’s Lenscape submission. “I shot this from our yard in Doonan at about 10pm,” he said. “I usually shoot with a Canon 450D, but the iPhone comes in handy for those quick moment circumstances.” Mr Lott said using the telescope was a cheaper alternative to expensive lenses. “It was the cheapest way I could think of to get a full frame shot without buying a telephoto lens,” he said. “And the iPhone camera fits snugly into the eyepiece of the telescope with a little focus tweaking.”

“I like the idea of being able to take good shots, but I’m only a beginner. I make coffee on the water’s edge of the Noosa River so I always have my Canon handy for these amazing sunrises.”

This whole state, and this country for that matter has gone from the once lucky country to one of the most expensive countries in the world, as far as day to day cost of living is concerned. All the politicians do is look after themselves and their mates.

Oh so offensive I HAVE to agree whole-heartedly with Chris Hobart in last week’s comment section re: attention-grabbing headlines. I saw that headline, “Say No To Noosa” and was immediately offended.

We love Noosa. We’ve been saying “Yes” to Noosa for decades, have finally moved here and went into defensive mode immediately - until we read the article. The Courier Mail along with many other “newspapers” around the country, (and I use that term very loosely) use this method to sell papers. They have turned into nothing more than gossip magazines and more often than not, the truth is buried so deeply it cannot be recognised. It does have a very negative effect on those who believe what they read, which in turn affects everyone else. But we should all be able to believe what we read or hear in the news. But that is no longer the case. We are bombarded with political spin on a daily basis. We are bombarded with media spin on a daily basis as well, I believe we are all a little jaded by all of it and prefer to read the simple, unembellished truth.

Noosa Today is a free weekly edition which I enjoy reading, because their style of reporting is usually so far removed from other papers.

It’s real - and caring.

An important point for the editor: Given it is a free edition, then why the sensationalist headline? People will either read it or not. I will. Please, keep it real.

Taking offence NOOSA Mayor Noel Playford in Noosa Today edition 124 has taken offence to the earlier comments that Noosa Council was on a “fast track towards financial ruin” and “the future of Noosa Council is unstable”.

The facts speak for themselves. It was Noel Playford as leader of Noosa Independence Alliance who predicted to the Queensland Treasury Corporation that the new Noosa Council computer system would cost $250,000 when in fact its actual cost by January 2014 was $1.6 mil-

lion and then by June 2014 the cost had blown out to $2.3 million.

There have been many media calls for the mayor to disclose the total cost for de-amalgamation and to date the mayor still claims it was $2.3 million despite the fact that Noosa Council as of February 2014 had used $12 million line of credit from Queensland Treasury Corporation for de-amalgamation costs.

The mayor’s financial acumen and ability to control the Noosa Council’s finances must certainly be in question.

In Noosa Today’s letters page, issue 124 in relation to last Thursday’s announcement that Sunshine Coast Alliance Inc was an alternative voice to EDV - it is interesting that not one comes from the communities of Eumundi, Doonan, Verrierdale, Weyba Downs, but rather from Tewantin, Noosaville, Peregian Springs.

Could it be that the Eumundi, Doonan, Verrierdale, Weyba Downs communities are supportive of the objectives of the Sunshine Coast Alliance Inc and do not support a boundary realignment where they become part of the Noosa Shire.

The Eumundi, Doonan, Verrierdale, and Weyba Downs communities do not need the latte chardonnay set of Noosa telling us what we should do, or support.

The fortune tellers of Noosa should butt out of the future for Eumundi, Doonan, Verrierdale, and Weyba Downs, we are very happy with what we have today.

We want divisional councillors, as we currently have. We do not want to be dictated to by minority green lobby groups that seem to all be affiliated, and seem to be running the council or the other way around, as Mayor Playford and some of the NSC councillors are the trustees, presidents, life members/committee members of.

It is little wonder that Mayor Playford wants the ridiculous and costly “jury system” introduced. Unique rotating home A TEHRAN design company has created a unique rotating home that takes year-round comfort to a whole new level.

The home office and breakfast rooms, turning rooms on the first and third floors, can change the formality of their appearance according to the owner’s preference, offering multiple seasonal or lighting scenarios.

The home is built over seven levels with two basement floors for fitness and wellness, a ground floor designated for parking and housekeeping rooms, two middle floors with living and entertaining spaces and the two upper-levels featuring the sleeping quarters and retreats for the family.

But what sets this home apart from other grand homes are the three unique rotating boxes that are designed to provide year-round comfort for the occupants.

The design is a reference to traditional Iranian homes, offering both a Zemestan-Neshin (winter living room) and a TaabestanNeshin (summer living room).

The boxes open in summer to offer wide, airy terraces and then close in winter to create cosy living spaces. But it’s not all seasonal this home offers absolute flexibility, adapting to the functional needs of the occupants.

Hi Tina, Interesting question, firstly would you normally ask everyone who enters your house to remove their shoes?

Unless it is wet and muddy then to be honest your carpets could possibly be better off if shoes are left on. Feet have natural oils and this residue can be left on the carpet which then attracts dust and dirt, so in effect this is worse than shoes!

The best solution to this is to provide plastic shoe covers, also remember that for some people removing shoes can be a physical issue and they may need to sit down to do this! So is it really necessary?

today Shorts to light up the screen NOOSA’S LIFESTYLE GUIDE

FILM lovers can unite with an audience of over 100,000 in over 250 cities across six continents this week when the Manhattan Short Film Festival screens at The J. The screening will feature 10 short films that have been selected from 589 entries from 27 countries and will screen in 250 cinemas.

Manhattan Short founding director Nicholas Mason says the festival is a great way to unite people from all corners of the globe.

“In times like these, cross-border events like Manhattan Short contribute toward greater tolerance and understanding, which are needed more than ever,” he said.

Among the top 10 finalists is Shift, a short film by James Croke, starring Aussie actor Lindsay Farris.

Farris plays Adam who, after a series of controversial experiments, finds his science funding cut. Determined to prove his genius and silence his critics, Adam plans an elaborate heist, but things don’t go quite as planned.

Other films include a selection of movies from around the world

set in an array of locations from outer space to the desert; 97% from the Netherlands, On/Off from France, Crime-The Animated Series and The Bravest, The Boldest from USA, La Carnada from Mexico, On The Bridge and Mend and Make Do from England, The Fall from Norway and Rhino Full Throttle from Germany.

The short film festival will also give the audience the chance to vote for their favourite film and best actor, making film-goers instant film critics.

Audience members will be given a ballot at the start of the festival and all votes will be sent through to Manhattan Short HQ, with the winner announced on 6 October.

Eggs come to the rescue

The Boxtrolls movie is now screening at BCC Noosa Cinemas.

Witty writer: Friend indeed Life of

MY FRIEND and neighbour Bliss, here in Bali, loaned me her copy of The Donald Friend Diaries so that I could research a presentation I am giving at the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival next week. Although I had a busy afternoon of work to get through, I found myself sprawled on a poolside recliner totally absorbed in the lifetime jottings of this caustic, witty, thoroughly debauched great Australian artist and writer.

My primary interest was in Friend’s time in Bali, which I had documented without reference to his diarised accounts of his dinners and soirees with the rich and famous (Mick and Bianca Jagger, the Duke and Duchess of Bedford among them) or his assignations with cheeky houseboys, but I did a double-take on page 292, where I discovered the following account: 1-9 August 1966, Noosa: In a little wooden cottage on stilts built right on the beach. There is no sound but the persuasive lulling of the waves breaking in long white lines. Beautiful sun-drenched empty days by the sea – or not empty, full of pleasant purposeless activities – walks along the rocky coast, talking and talking ... swimming, hours of sunbaking ... at night a few drinks at a pub on top of the hill, and early to bed to sleep deeply, and occasionally waking to hear the snoring sea ... The locals are ugly and gnarled as old sun-bitten saveloys. They are the stubborn living prototypes of Australian ugliness. Everyone seems old. Old old visitors who look anxiously left and right as they shuffle in slippers across the street. Old tourists and old shopkeepers, noses and chins like tomahawks, genuinely antique fishermen, veteran estate agents, old dames in backyards clutter

up the scenery as they dodge the pawpaw trees on tottery trips to the outhouses.

Friend’s discovery of Noosa pre-dates my own by a handful of years, but I do remember much of what he describes, including the old red-brick Reef Hotel, where I sat alone most nights of a winter swell in 1972, reading a paperback and nursing a pot of beer. But the old,

gnarly and ugly locals! Never. That’s a cheap shot, and on behalf of the current day gnarly old locals, I take exception.

But there’s not much we can do. Friend is long dead and he managed to waste away most of his estate before he curled his toes up. We’ll just have to cop this one on the chin.

the magazine I then worked for secured serialisation rights to his epic and ever so slightly bawdy work, Bumbooziana, and I was assigned to edit an excerpt and prepare it for publication.

Friend’s publishers, the Griphon Press, were somewhat concerned that the excerpt would not be handled with the decorum and taste it deserved, so they decided to pay me a visit with the great man in tow. In the matter of taste and decorum, both of us were on somewhat shaky ground. The magazine I worked for was Australian Playboy and the subtitle of Bumbooziana was “Sundry notes and papers, being the recently discovered notes and documents of the Natural and Instinctive Bestiality Research Expedition.”

But the meeting went well, and although I had been warned he would be prickly, Friend was charming and amusing. I told him that my track record with the art world was not great, having been chucked out of the wake for Bill Dobell at Wangi Wangi by the art dealer Rudy Komon. He laughed and said: “That’s because Rudy’s a tight-arse and it’s well known that journos drink even more than painters.”

I’ve speed-read the diaries over a couple of days and thoroughly enjoyed Friend’s erudite take on everything, from the incredible highs to the devastating lows of a man who did everything to excess.

Mitch in the house Mitchell Rae of Outer Island Surfboards, shaper to the stars, and possibly the most gifted surfboard artist on the planet, is in town and we had sunset drinks at the old Blue Ocean bar in Legian, scene of much debauchery (see above) and nude bar-hanging back in the day. There was none of this the other evening, overweight Aussies in Bintang singlets rather than slinky Euro-trash.

Poor Mitch’s life of recent times sounds like a country and western song, although his dog hasn’t died yet. Flying into Java for some quality surf time with old mates, he immediately succumbed to a hideous lurgy and was laid low for a couple of weeks, too weak to get out of bed. No sooner had he recovered than he broke a toe on a freaky wave and is out of the water again.

But he cheered up after a few Bintangs with me and former Peregian jazz dag John Pickering, and admitted that he is enjoying my new book, even as his team of crack lawyers scrutinise his contribution to it, with particular reference to statute of limitations.

Porcelain in Pomona WELL-KNOWN ceramist, Robyn Gill, will open her exhibition ‘Porcelain Black, White or Colour’ at the Pomona Railway Station Gallery on 4 October.

By JOLENE OGLE A LOCAL mother and author has launched a national campaign to raise awareness of food allergies in Australian schools.

Jackie Nevard has released a number of children’s books based on her son Thai’s battle with food allergies, that focus on everyday battles for children with severe food allergies.

Now, the author has launched a national campaign calling for students and teachers to raise their hands for anaphylaxis - the most severe and life-threatening reaction to a food allergy.

Ms Nevard said she hopes to educate Australians about all types of allergies and will visit local schools to help educate children through games and craft.

Beating anaphylaxis MS NEVARD says there are a number of ways teachers and students can help raise awareness of the risks of anaphylaxis in schools.

Wear yellow: Yellow is the colour for Anaphylaxis Awareness Day. Students and teachers are encouraged to wear yellow to show support for those who suffer severe food allergies and to demonstrate people shouldn’t be judged for being ‘different’ due to allergies.

Top 8 Challenge: Students can better understand living with an allergy by taking the Top 8 Challenge. Go without eating peanuts, dairy, soy, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts or wheat for a day to see what life can be like for people with food allergies.

Read the labels: Teachers can bring a selection of empty food packages to school for students to read. Students will be shocked at the foods that contain the top eight allergens.

Berries and apple crumble slice the strawberries. Put aside.

3. Put the oats, butter and sugar into a bowl and rub all ingredients together. Add more or less butter, depending on the moisture in the ingredients. Rub together until the mixture becomes like a crumble. Set aside.

4. Lightly crush the blueberries and then add to the apples just before they are ready to be taken off the heat.

5. In a large oven proof dish, layer the apple and blueberry mixture. Lay the sliced strawberries on top. Top off with the crumble mixture. Spread as thick or thin as you like, keeping in mind the thicker the crumble is, the longer it will take to crisp.

6. Put into a moderate oven (180 degrees) for about 25 minutes or until the crumble begins to brown and become crisp.

7. Serve with custard, cream or ice-cream.

NOOSA offers many outdoor venues for the ultimate wedding ceremony. As well as treating your guests to breathtaking natural beauty, getting married on the beach or at a park is a great way to save money to spend on the more important things like a stunning dress or the bar tab.

If you are wanting to take advantage of one of the many breathtaking sites throughout the region, you will need a permit from the council.

It’s a rather simple process.

Visit the council’s website to download the application form and submit it to the council at least six weeks in advance.

Set aside a bit of time and read the terms and conditions of the form, so you can get an understanding of what can and can’t be done on the day.

Bookings can be made for a maximum time of two hours including set-up and clean-up and a one-off, non-refundable payment of $159 is needed to secure your booking.

If the booking is successful, the council will send you a confirmation and receipt within 10 working days.

For a beach wedding, you will also need approval from the council. Beach ceremonies must take place outside the restricted area of First Point to Beach Access 12 and the flagged bathing area that is set up on the day.

With such a great track record, we asked Ineke what the secret was to a successful marriage.

“The secret is to treat the other person how you want to be treated yourself, respect for each other, good communication, be each other’s friend and don’t think the grass is greener on the other side, as it isn’t,” she said.

Gerard said the secret was he simply picked the right woman.

Gerard and Ineke are affectionately known as Opa and Oma by their children, Simone of Pomona and Saskia of Eumundi, and their seven grandchildren, and have travelled from Holland

to Noosa to celebrate their special day.

“Me and my sister are so happy ... they came over here to celebrate their anniversary with us as we haven’t seen them for a while. Skype is not the same,” Simone said.

“Opa and Oma absolutely love Noosa beach and the Queensland sun.

“It is so nice having them here. They will spend one week at my sister’s in Eumundi and the other week in Pomona.”

Keep it safe on road trip

The Cooroy Car Show is on 26 October at Johnson Park, Cooroy.

Hot wheels show off their shine NOW in its 20th year, the Cooroy Car Show is on again next month, hosted by the Combined Coastal Car Club.

The club was formed in 1993 and includes members of all ages with all makes and models, including Australian classics, vintage cars, machinery, muscle cars and hot rods.

There will be a giant slippery slide and jumping castle for the kids on the day, plus

food and drinks will be available, and a swap meet where you can pick up a bargain or two.

Public entry is $3 for an adult or $5 for a family. Entry to the Show and Shine competition is $5 and trophy showcars are $20 per entry.

THE school holidays are here and with glorious weather upon us, it’s time to pack the minivan and set off for a good ol' family road trip.

From the Noosa region, there are many road trip destinations to choose from including Gympie, Maryborough or even Byron Bay, but the Queenslanders are being urged to pay attention on the roads these holidays.

Police, Fire and Emergency Services Minister Jack Dempsey joined Police Commissioner Ian Stewart to launch Operation Spring Break 2014, a co-ordinated state-wide initiative for the 2014 September and October school holidays.

Mr Dempsey said the road safety operation was aimed at reducing the number of serious injuries and fatal crashes, to ensure everyone returned home this season.

“Many families travel long distances during the September school holiday period which means the roads are busier than usual,” he said.

“With the extra traffic comes the potential that more crashes can occur so we want to ensure families and all commuters get to and from their destination safely.

“One fatality this school holiday period will be one too many.”

Mr Dempsey said the government had committed more

police on the frontline to monitor road safety and reinforce the road safety message, but now it was up to the public to do their bit by remembering the Fatal Five.

“Do not speed, do not drive tired, do not drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol, wear a seatbelt and ensure full attention is on the road,” he said.

The operation, which will run from 19 September to 10 October, is designed to direct community attention to offences related to speed, impaired driving, seatbelts, fatigue, driver distraction and other road-related offences.

Police Commissioner Ian Stewart said police would target these offences to make Queensland’s roads safer for everyone.

“A highly visible police presence will be deployed across Queensland’s highways and roads these school holidays,” he said.

Last year’s operation detected almost 1500 drink drivers and saw police issue more than 1000 infringement

Audi has crackle and parp

By PETER ANDERSON AUDI’S RSQ3 has the distinction of being the least-expensive RSbadged, high-performance Audi money can buy.

Riding on the coat-tails of the brilliant SQ5, the second of Audi’s fast SUVs arrived with great fanfare and much promise.

With the all-new Porsche Macan and Mercedes GLA breathing down its neck, the RSQ3 needs to deliver.

A price tag like $81,900 might seem like a lot, especially given the distance between it and the top-spec Audi Q3.

The RS additions are obvious five-cylinder engine, 25mm lower ride height, electrically adjustable sports seats and body kit that adds skirts, bumpers and wing.

Along for the ride is Audi’s MMI with dashtop screen, dual-zone climate control, cruise control, alloy pedals, and leather trim including the flat-bottomed steering wheel.

There’s also front and rear parking sensors, a terrible reversing camera, auto headlights and wipers, power windows and mirrors, comprehensive trip computer and keyless entry and start.

Our test car also benefited from the $5250 RS Performance Pack, which brings the wheel size to 20-inches from 19, a digital radio, embossed leather seats, premium sound and red painted brake callipers.

A whopping $1300 adds black bits in the interior and exterior.

Short, sharp, always ready for action - Audi’s sensational little RSQ3.

In big-wheeled, deep-bumpered RS form, the usually slick Audi Q3 is rendered stubby and angry-looking.

The Q3’s grille is replaced with the now predictable black honeycomb, gloss in this case, and the huge wheels fill the arches to meet the lower ride height halfway.

Inside is almost pure Audi Q3, with very little to distinguish it from an up-spec TDI. The seats have some additional adjustment but everything, apart from the flat-bottomed, perforated leather steering wheel, is the same.

It’s good, if a bit bland by Audi standards.

Rear seat passengers might have a hard time squeezing through the small door aperture but once on board will be quite comfortable, with plenty of leg and headroom for sub

six footers.

There’s lots of little useful storage spots and the boot floor is high, flush with the bumper but with storage cubbies beneath.

The instruments are very good until you come to the speedo - it’s all mashed-up on the right-hand side to read to a slightly silly 300km/h and so even on the better-spaced lower speed side, it’s hard to tell what the speed is.

Six airbags, ABS with brake force distribution, traction and stability control and seatbelt pre-tensioners amount to five EuroNCAP stars.

The MMI 7-inch screen can be manually folded away and is controlled from the dash-mounted MMI wheel.

The rotary control is not in a great spot and is not as user-friendly as

those found in the Audis A3 or A4.

Sound is good, with Bose DSP along for the ride and the Bluetooth connectivity easy enough to manage (no USB, proprietary cable only).

The sat-nav is standard Audi, with an easy input method and a good clear voice for the instructions, which are also shown on the screen between the dials.

The RSQ3’s 2.5-litre five-cylinder TFSI engine hammers out an impressive 228kW of power and a whopping 420Nm of torque.

This is enough to catapult the 1655kg RS to 100km/h in 5.2 seconds while officially using 8.8 litres per 100km on the combined cycle.

Despite our addiction to the hyperspeed acceleration, we used fuel at a rate of 11.9L/100km.

It’s hard to pinpoint what it is about the RSQ3 that makes it a lot of fun because before getting into the bendy stuff there’s a couple of problems to overcome.

First is the unfortunate and awkward driving position.

It’s fine for those who have uncommonly short legs and/or long arms but is otherwise hard to get right.

The seats aren’t much help because they lack lateral support and need more behind the shoulder blades because the driver needs to sit upright to deal with the too-high steering wheel.

The seven-speed DSG automatic seems to have a hard time dealing with all that power and torque.

When waking from stop-start it’s prone to lurching if the foot is lifted from the throttle to try and smooth progress or avoid a pile-up.

When the accelerator is kept down the transmission can occasionally forget what to do at the redline and the driver may find themselves shouting “Upshift!” to remind it.

Booting the RSQ3 is hilarious even in teeming rain it doesn’t bother lifting its skirts, it’s quite happy for the substantial rubber to tear them free and leave them on the road. In the dry, acceleration is brutal and near-instant, throttle response razor sharp above 2000rpm when in dynamic mode.

It’s a car looking for buyers rather than buyers looking for a car.

As long as they’re happy to live with the flaws, the buyers will have a ball.

Spring fair in style

SPORTTODAY The Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club holiday sailing program sets sail this Monday.

By JONATHON HOWARD TEWANTIN State School students and their families celebrated the school’s annual spring fair in style last Wednesday, 17 September.

The fair lasts about half the school day and includes a range of fundraising initiatives to assist the school and Parents and Citizens’ committee.

The school’s principal Neil Jenkins said the day was a huge success and raised more than $20,000 in less than three hours.

“Over 100 prizes were donated from businesses in our local community of which we are very appreciative,” Mr Jenkins said.

Mr Jenkins said more than 1000 people attended and all classes ran a stall.

“We rely on the generosity of families and volunteers to make the day such a success,” he said.

“The P and C, staff and students did a terrific job in making the day so successful and the funds raised will go towards improving our school and its facilities including a $130,000 playground installed on the main oval this year.”

THE Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club school holiday sailing program sets sail on Monday offering kids the chance to learn the ropes.

Children aged eight to 18-years are welcome to attend and will be introduced to the Yachting Australia start sailing program at level one and two.

Participants will learn to sail the Vagabond dinghies with a junior instructor aboard and are in for a week of fun learning to rig, tack and gybe on the Noosa River.

The course will run Monday 29 September to Friday 3 October, from 10am to 4pm daily. The cost is $65 per day and includes lunch and afternoon snack, as well as life jacket, coach and rescue boat support.

Lunch and afternoon snack along with life jackets and coach/ rescue boat support are all supplied.

OUR last Wednesday of Junior Touch Football before the school holiday break was action packed.

The under-10 division got the afternoon underway with the Screaming Iguanas who played a solid defensive game to take the win over Pink Storm with Ethan, Louis and Zoe having great games. Mexican Amigos took out the game against GSLC (girls) despite the GSLC team scoring a couple of second half touchdowns. Lexie, Grace and Marcellus all played well for their teams.

GSLC (boys) and the Purple Panthers showed great attacking skill, GSLC taking the points this week with Lilliana, Alla, Maddie and Ashton playing well.

The under-14/16s STCC (girls) were match up against GSLC (girls) with STCC finishing on top. Ella, Tia and Rosie produced first rate games.

GSLC (boys) were too strong for the NDSHS 8s (girls) with Charlie, Scott, James and Chelsea F. putting in mighty efforts.

Sunshine Rebels and Inferno played out a tight match with the Rebels in front at full time by just a couple of touchdowns.

Great skill was on show by Harry, Taj, Tyla and Giverny.

NDSHS 8s (mixed) made Average Joes work hard for their win until the final whistle with Clay, Joe-Max, Kalen and Kirra all having outstanding games.

STCC Pansies, clearly the team to beat at this stage of the season, accounted for SBSHS (girls). Cooper, John, Sharlene and Esta all played well.

A close match between GSLC and Banana Split saw the under-12s get off to a great start with GSLC taking the game.

Lily, Jamaica, Bella and Chloe gave tenacious performances.

Purple Storm had no answers against the Vipers who were on fire this week but full credit to the girls who showed their ‘never give up’ attitude for the entire match. Gus, Georgia, and Jack were rock solid for their respective teams.

Saints had the edge over Devils this time around with Bronson, Lachlan and William having outstanding games.

Hope everyone enjoys the school holidays and look forward to the junior competition recommencing the first Wednesday of the final school term.

Competition night is Wednesday from 7pm with practice session on Monday nights from 7.15pm. Social groups meet three afternoons a week. All sessions are held at the Bicentennial Centre Sunshine beach.

What an end to season

Pennant win In the

A BRIGHT clear day provided the perfect setting for the local netball grand finals, in what was a spectacular end to the 2014 season.

Cooroora teams featured in most of the divisions, showing their dominance throughout the season.

St Thomas More also showed dominance this season, while a Tewantin versus Tewantin game could have caused confusion for the umpires.

The Division 4 finals were a nailbiter, being decided in extra time and most games were won by only a small margin.

The under 9s joined in the finals fever and received their medals or trophies from Lola McDonald.

The finals were a great morning for all with impressive netball skills and plenty of teamwork on display throughout the day.

Thanks go to the many volunteers, umpired, parents, coaches and schools who participated and a big congratulations to the players for the 2014 season.

The election chose the team to lead us through to next May when Coles will assume full control of the Noosa Junction site, and the greens will disappear forever.

Richard Wales, who has lived abroad for the past year, returns as chairman.

Paul Rieck will head up the men's section and Jan Burkitt will serve as ladies' president for our final year.

The search continues for a possible new home for our bowling activities,

which have been held at the Junction for over 30 years.

Tuesday men's pairs last week went to Paul Rieck and Ted Lanyon who had the biggest winning margin.

Next came Terry Finnegan and Walter Zemler.

The ladies' morning was well supported. This enjoyable challenge every third Thursday of the month is to encourage our lady bowlers to develop their skills. Men are invited to also play but we require a lady to be skip. Umpire hints and etiquette are also shared on the day.

Saturday morning saw the semi-finals of the mixed fours championships. The French/Kenzler team play the McGrath/Dawson team next week in the finals.

Patrols ramp up Between the

WITH last weekend being the first of the 2014/15 patrolling season all went well for our three local clubs Peregian, Sunshine Beach and Noosa Heads.

At Peregian it was a quite weekend and patrol captains reported no incidents. While for Sunshine Beach it was full on. This season Sunshine will start with twelve patrols which will bring the club close to full strength.

Regarding the season club captain Scott Summers said, “Our patrol strength is looking good, we have a bronze squad starting on the 9th October and our overall membership is solid.

“Also we have a new IRB (Inflatable Rescue Boat) on order with Thundercat Inflatable and this will further strengthen our rescue teams.

“Our members were put through their proficiencies and our Nippers were on the beach for their first day of the season.”

Over the hill at Noosa Main Beach it was a similar story. Patrols were on duty, proficiencies were being conducted, and the Seahorse Nippers were having the third Saturday of their season.

For the Seahorse people Saturday was one of their most successful ever with 53 children in attendance and 64 helpers, ensuring that all went well.

Once again the Noosa Shire Council provided the parking facilities and under the supervision of the surf club parking attendants, this ensured that access to the beach was made easier for the parents and their children.

“The Seahorse Nippers,” said Noosa Club Captain Joe Cirillo, “would have to be one of the greatest success stories in the history of our club and we congratulate and thank all those involved… they have made us very proud.

“To hear the laughter and see the smiles

on the faces of these kids makes it all worthwhile.”

In keeping with club tradition Noosa held its ‘Back to the Beach’ start of the season barbecue on Saturday evening. It was good to see the Peregian President Brett Leckie and several of his people in attendance, socialising with their Noosa club mates.

With the IRB patrols now playing a major role, all relevant equipment motors and trailers were inspected and training continued.

Saturday also saw a visit from Sunshine Beach IRB patrol member Paul Brady who spent time with Noosa’s IRB supervisor David James.

“Our clubs are working together,” James said, “discussing patrolling and the possible formation of racing teams.

“These teams are now a vital part of our training program for the winter months.

“Also with our two clubs being on both ends of National Park a good communication is vital.”

In keeping with their policies of working for the community both Noosa and Sunshine Beach surf clubs sent representatives to the Annual Smile for a Child Charity Golf Day which was held at the Tewantin Golf Club.

“A good way to say thanks to our community for their support of our clubs,” said Noosa’s ATV (All Terrain Vehicle) towing the IRB (Inflatable Rescue Boat) after training.

Nippers in the mud THE surf patrol season is off to a racing start with more than 170 nippers signing on for the Sunshine Beach Surf Club program.

The two-day sign-on was held at the Noosa Aquatic Centre with children as young as six-years-old up to

14-years signing on for the 2015 season.

Over 50 new Nippers joined the team as the new recruits excelled in the pool proficiency swims.

Club held a family fun day at the Apex camp in Mudjimba, on Sunday.

Nippers and their families enjoyed an actionpacked day of rock climbing, rope courses, team building games and the very popular mud run.

FISHING in the Noosa River over the past week once again has been sensational; the river shows a great diversity at this time of the year, with the whole system producing good fish.

Starting at the mouth large flathead have been all the rage with large fish taking a liking to both baits and soft plastics.

Down towards the Dog Beach and the Frying Pan nice sized whiting have been thick with the humble pealed prawn being favourite bait.

Around the Woods Bays area, tailor and trevally have been smashing bait fish on the surface. Give the River2sea Skinny Dogs a go with the larger size 110mm a good match for the bait fish that are there at the moment. These surface lures work well with a ‘walk the dog’ action imitating a struggling bait fish or prawn.

Further upriver the Jacks are back with more and more fish reported each week, an early start working the banks between the lakes should see a result.

Jonny Beck with the fish of the week. been reported with the predators like pearl perch, cobia and snapper all feasting on live baits. Closer in, Jew shoal, Chardon’s Reef and Sunshine reef are all fishing well, pan sized snapper and sweetlip have both been caught in good numbers.

Off the rocks in the National Park, Tuna has been the focus of angler. Land base game fishing is huge down south

and with the large schools of baitfish coming closer to the headlands we are seeing larger fish within the reach of land based anglers. This treacherous style of fishing is not for the faint hearted with the risks sometimes outweighing the rewards… the rewards; big long tail tuna.
