Imam slams terror

By NOEL MURPHY GEELONG’S Muslim leader has criticised terrorist acts in the name of Islam and called for a united local community against violence.

Imam Mohammad Ramzan said Islamic State forces (ISIS) had nothing to do with Islam or Australia’s Muslim community.

“It has nothing to do with Islam and every Muslim and other fellow human being should know this,” he told the Independent.

“Our main concern is our own society, where we live - the problems of our neighbourhood, social issues, education issues. There are so many things to do and that’s where our basic attention should be.”

Imam Ramzan’s comments followed anti-terror raids in Sydney and Brisbane yesterday based on intelligence reports that Islamic State supporters planned a public execution in Australia.

He was also keen to counter anxiety about Islam following Australia’s heightened travel security alert, Australian Muslims travelling to fight in overseas conflicts and reports of Muslim mothers alerting authorities with fears their sons might try to leave the country to fight with ISIS. Imam Ramzan presented a sermon late last week focussing on security concerns and stressing Islam’s fundamental tenets to preserve rather than take life.

No, not a new gold rush, more a lava rush.

Melbourne University’s Professor Bernie Joyce suggests that geotourism - specifically, volcanoes - could generate a few bob.

An eruption could be a “great tourist attraction”, he says, especially a live volcano that kept spluttering for a few years.

“There’s already an interest among geotourists and an active volcano would be an attraction to some tourists.”

GEELONG could become the chicken capital of Victoria if animal husbandry expansion plans come to fruition.

Stockfeed company Ridley has announced plans to build a feed mill at Lara to handle an expected growth spurt in poultry and pork production.

The company has bought 5.3 hectares from grain handler Riordan Group to produce at least 200,000 tonnes of stockfeed a year, employing up to 20 full-time staff.

The development of new intensive agricultural zones nearby in Golden Plains Shire will make a large feed mill critical to the success of the industries as well as local job creation.

Ridley chief financial officer Alan Boyd said the parcel of land was in a strategic position close to major transport routes and the company’s Laverton rendering facility.

Mr Boyd said the feed mill would cater to existing Ridley customers, some of whom were planning to increase production.

The proposal was contingent on minimum commitments from customers but Ridley considered it a longterm strategic investment, he said.

“It’s a highly desirable site and worth taking the risk of getting all the approvals required. There’s strong government support for the area.

“It’s also near Geelong’s port, so

there might be opportunities for shipments of grain unsuitable for human consumption.

“There aren’t many areas set aside for livestock production and we’ve done quite a bit of market research on the area.

“We’re talking to our customers to see what the long-term expansion potential is. We need to make sure we have the capacity for the future.”

Golden Plans Shire Mayor Jenny Blake said the shire’s proposed intensive agricultural precinct had already attracted a number of proposals.

“There’s definitely a great opportunity to increase the productivity of the whole area between Midland Hwy and

Meredith-Shelford Rd.” Federal Member for Corangamite Sarah Henderson said Ridley’s plans were testament to the strong future for intensive agriculture in the region.

“For jobs, farmers and exports, the Golden Plains intensive agriculture precinct presents our region with enormous opportunity,” Ms Henderson said.

“The Golden Plains region already produces 21 per cent of Victoria’s eggs, 11 per cent of poultry and five per cent of pigs. Per capita consumption of chicken meat across Australia increased by 25 per cent between 2004 and 2011, presenting a real opportunity for our region.”

Peaceniks decry city’s push for defence jobs

By NOEL MURPHY ANTI-WAR activists have slammed Geelong leaders for pursuing a $20 billion army contract instead of opportunities in alternative energy, food and medical research.

Swan Island Peace Group accused Geelong Defence Alliance of pursuing the business of death in its push for the Land 400 project.

Group spokesman Greg Rolles said Geelong’s bid to refashion its economy as traditional manufacturing declined should focus on pursuits that help “people live and thrive rather than killing them�. “Geelong has lots of qualified people who could be involved in peaceful, sustainable alternatives,� he said. “I’m aware Geelong is facing hard

times and needs to find jobs but in the long run any focus on so-called defence and military research is ultimately unsustainable. “We should be focussing on alternative energy, medical research, food production, anything that helps people.�

The peace group, which will next week target Queenscliff’s Swan Island defence facility and the role of its trainees in US-led military conflicts, also attacked next February’s Avalon International Airshow as a trade show of death. “One of the major companies there will be Lockheed Martin, which Australia has pledged $14 billion to for a joint strike fighter that’s a lemon made in the US,� Mr Rolles said. “The government is asking us to

spend $7 every time we go to the doctor. Avalon represents the theft from Australia of social services by companies in the business of death.�

The defence alliance members include Winchester Australia, Committee for Geelong, Avalon Airport and representatives from City Hall, Geelong’s manufacturing council and its tourism board.

Geelong is vying with South Australia to win work building the Land 400 armoured combat vehicle. The world’s largest armoured vehicle project would create hundreds of direct manufacturing jobs for its host city.

Geelong Mayor Darryn Lyons said earlier this year he was committed to securing the project. “Our city needs this now,� he said. “We are in a rebuilding stage in

Geelong and this is the future for our great city. “We are prepared to take on this new industry, are capable and have the best location. I want to build and service the Australian Defence Force’s new military vehicle and create jobs for the future.�

Premier Denis Napthine has invited Cr Lyons to attend next week’s Land Forces Expo in Brisbane where he will promote the Geelong campaign. “I have been advocating the capability of Geelong and pushing for greater Australian content in the delivery of the Land 400 vehicle and I am delighted to accept the Premier’s invitation to the launch of the Victorian State Government strategy on land defence activities,� he said.

Residents were also concerned about the use of toxic fumigating chemicals. “This obviously poses an unacceptable threat to the local community.”

IT WAS a plea for volunteer puppy carers in the Independent last year that first alerted Natasha Parkin to the idea.

“We were talking about getting a dog and caring for a Seeing Eye Dogs Australia pup seemed like the perfect way to test the waters,” Natasha laughed.

The Newtown family, including husband Lyle and children Eric and Alice, were matched with a sweet-natured black Labrador named Connie.

Connie accompanied Natasha to work at Deakin University where the students loved having her in their tutorials.

“They even bought Connie thank you gifts at the end of the semester,” Natasha said.

Connie visited many public places including parks, cafes and the cinema, which all helped with her socialisation.

“You don’t need to have any experience with dogs. In fact, we've learned a lot from having Connie,” Natasha explained.

“It's been a learning curve but the support we get from the SEDA puppy trainers is fantastic.

They're always available on the phone if need be.

“They're inside dogs, so you don’t need a big backyard and you don’t a high level of fitness because taking them for walks is not too strenuous.

“It’s a key time for basic socialisation and becoming familiar with different environments, noises and situations they'll encounter as a working dog.”

The Parkins have just said goodbye to Connie after completing her initial care but almost immediately welcomed Angela for the next 12 months.

“It was very sad saying goodbye to Connie," Nathasha said.

"She was really well behaved and a gorgeous girl but we have no time to wallow in grief. Angela is just as gorgeous - we all fell in love with her immediately.”

Natasha said the family was happy to take it one dog at a time but looked forward to receiving updates on how Connie fares through her formal training.

Each Seeing Eye Dog costs around $35,000 to train. Vision-impaired people face a year-long waiting list for the dogs.

With SEDA covering all costs, the program requires volunteers to care for a puppy in their home from eight weeks until they are about 12 months old.

A RESIDENTS group has slammed a proposed multi-million dollar grain storage development at Corio Quay North.

North Shore Residents Group has lodged an extensive objection to the proposal, claiming it was “dismissive” of the impact on anyone living nearby.

Bunge Australia has announced plans for a 450,000-tonnes-a-year bulk grain export terminal on land leased from Midway.

The grain receival facility and three storage silos will connect to an existing woodchip loader at Corio Quay North, creating up to 100 jobs during construction and up to 15 ongoing.

President Bruce Cohen labelled the proposal as dangerous and a traffic hazard that would add 100 to 200 truck movements a day.

The applicant's report on the proposal was “flawed and dismissive of the issues involved and the impact on the local area and the residents”, Mr Cohen said.

Fuel boss ‘gagged’ on fracking

Spokesperson Chris Johnson said the group invited Lakes Oil chief Rob Annells to speak at a public meeting but he declined citing advice from the Government.

The incident suggested the Government was “pulling strings” to protect the gas industry, Ms Johnson said.

“The Victorian Government

“We find it extremely disappointing that a community group that wants to show and discuss both sides of the fracking story hasn’t been able to do so.

“Lakes Oil holds Petroleum Exploration Permit 163 to drill for gas in this region, an area which stretches from Highton to the Surf Coast.

“In an email, Mr Annells’ secretary declined the invitation, explaining: “We have been alerted by the Victorian Government’s Primary Agency to speak at events that are only run by ap-

proved government bodies that provide controlled, open and impartial dialogue.”

Ms Johnson questioned the explanation.

“Who is protecting who in this onshore gas game and what is it they are afraid of?”

Ms Johnson said the meeting, with “well-respected” Diversitat chief Michael Martinez as moderator, would encourage openness and impartiality.”

Mr Annells denied being gagged.

“That’s not terribly accurate.

We could have chosen to attend if we wanted to,” he said.

“We were advised by the government to leave the public consultation process to them, so we have.”

Primary Agency facilitator Mick Maguire said the Government had gagged nobody.

“I’m not sure why that email has gone out but I think there’s been something lost in translation here,” Mr McGuire said.

“We’ve been running a series of open days around the state and meeting with key stakeholders including Friends of the Earth and Lock the Gate.

“Rob Annells offered to come to the open days to present but I suggested to him that we were more about gathering information than presenting it.

“All the key stakeholders have supported the process.”

This time the money all goes to good causes. Kev’s Family Fun Day is a joint fundraising event for Gordon Student Support Fund and St Albans Football Club.

The student fund receives the day’s gate takings – a gold coin donation or $5 dollars per car – while the footy club gets the canteen and bar receipts.

Kev reckons the place should be packed on Sunday, being the start of the school holidays.

“All the attractions are free,” Kev emphasised.

“There’s a giant slide, jumping castle, face painting, free lollipops and balloons for the kids, a puppeteer and music by Sorry Nation.

“We also do a show ‘n’ shine for best car and best bike, which is a people’s choice vote.

“The beauty of this day is all the food and drinks are at football club prices and excellent value for the whole family and the raffle has prizes donated by generous sponsors.”

Kev and the late Ernie Speight established the student support fund after they, along with hundreds of others, were made redundant when International Harvester closed down in 1987.

They used the $1600 left over in a union shop steward account to set up the fund, which now helps financially struggling students through their TAFE educations.

Start planning volcano action

By NOEL MURPHY A VOLCANIC eruption in the Geelong region would expose a serious lack of disaster planning, according to a Melbourne University earth scientist.

Professor Bernie Joyce said emergency services were poorly prepared for a volcanic eruption anywhere across the geologically-volatile southwest of Victoria from Geelong to the South Australian border.

Recent studies have suggested new volcanic eruptions in the region at any time.

Prof Joyce, who has identified Anakie as a likely site, told the Independent an eruption could well be overdue.

Scientists this week warned of volcanoes on the western reaches of the Victoria’s Newer Volcanic Precinct (NVP) erupting virtually without warning.

Prof Joyce said Geelong was less likely to face an immediate

volcanic threat but he issued a similar caution.

“Little warning of an eruption would be expected,” he said.

“Minor seismic activity with small earthquakes might precede the eruption by some weeks and there could also be minor uplift or subsidence of the ground surface and perhaps changes in ground temperature and the exhalation of volcanic gases and steam.

“Australian volcanologists agree that further eruption is possible and may well be overdue. A future eruption would not be the renewal of activity at an existing volcano but the initiation of a new volcano.”

The Geelong and southwest regions feature prominently in the NVP, with 400 volcanoes peppered across the landscape, about a dozen of which have been active in the past 20,000 to 30,000 years.

Prof Joyce said he had spoken with the State Emergency Service about contingency plans for a volcano eruption but received little response.

“The effect on infrastructure would include blocking rivers, cutting railways, electricity, gas supplies – they’d all be affected,” he said.

“You’d need to do things that need expertise; there would be fires, new settlements and the whole thing would go on for years and would be disruption but a great tourist attraction.

“There’s already an interest among geotourists and an active volcano would be an attraction to some tourists.”

FASTER cancer treatment is set to begin in Geelong with delivery of a high-tech machine to Barwon Health today.

Barwon Health said the linear accelerator’s “incredible accuracy” would reduce treatment time.

Radiation oncologist Dr Maithum Mathlum said cancer treatment would also become “more accurate”.

“The tumour or region be-

ing treated can be visualised by plain X-ray or a special CT scan before or even during the process to help improve accuracy and allow for patient movement or change in position due to breathing” Dr Mathlum said.

“The machine allows patients to be treated more quickly, helping ease the burden placed on consumers.”

LITTLE Mia Eastman had a big idea.

The Fyans Park Primary School bright spark came up with a water recycling idea that seems obvious once it’s laid out.

And her big idea could send Mia jetting off on a big trip to NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre later this year after she was announced as one of 12 finalists of a littleBIGidea competition.

The national competition, aiming to foster creativity and innovation in students from grades three to eight, attracted more than 1300 entries.

Mia’s littleBIGidea entry tapped into the idea of using rain water to fill a car’s window cleaning water tank, recycling a precious natural resource.

Mia envisaged fitting a separate tank to capture the rainwater

running off the windscreen and connecting it to the vehicle’s windscreen-cleaning tank, using rainwater instead of tap water.

With the average car’s windscreen cleaning tank holding approximately three litres of water, judges considered Mia’s recycled water storage system would make a positive environmental impact. littleBIGidea judges include James O’Loghlin, former host of the ABC’s The New Inventors, Christie Burnett, editor of popular parenting blog Childhood101. com, and Bernard Caleo, presenter of Origin’s Energy for Schools shows.

“It was fascinating to review all of the littleBIGideas submitted by students to see what they believe will make life better or easier in the future,” Mr O’Loghlin said.

“After reading hundreds of entries it is clearly evident the next

generation of Australia has an exciting, creative and innovative vision for the future.

“I’m really looking forward to meeting Mia and the other 11 talented finalists.”

Three overall winners earn a trip to Florida USA to visit innovative hotspots including the Kennedy Space Centre, Epcot Theme Park, Walt Disney World Florida and Ripley’s Believe it or Not. Other prizes include $1000 in education grants for each of the nine runners-up, $4000 to spend on energy upgrades for the 12 finalist student’s schools, plus tickets to an education conference for the teacher nominated by each of these students.

Henderson blasts port option

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN STATE Labor’s Bay West port option would cause “massive” environmental damage to Bellarine Peninsula, federal MP Sarah Henderson has claimed.

The Member for Corangamite said work on the proposed container port would require blasting 100 million cubic metres of bedrock and sand from the Port Phillip Heads.

The damage would hit particularly hard at Point Lonsdale, Queenscliff, St

Leonards, Indented Head and Portarlington, she warned.

“The blasting of 100 million cubic metres of bedrock and sand from the heads, which would be required, would mean an increase in water flowing into Port Phillip Bay,” Ms Henderson said.

“Not only does Bay West risk causing large-scale erosion of many Bellarine Peninsula beaches, it also risks damaging business along the coast including in the aquaculture and tourism industries.

“These are the environmental and

economic risks that Victorian Labor is trying to hide from the people of the Bellarine and the Geelong region.”

Labor shadow ports minister Natalie Hutchins blasted the claims.

“Ms Henderson’s figures are false.

She’s either grossly misinformed or she’s simply fear mongering to the people of Geelong,” Ms Hutchins said.

“You’d think rather than opposing future jobs in Geelong Ms Henderson would welcome the prospect.

“The Napthine Government is hiding advice from its own department that shows there are several viable options for a second container port in Bay West, including options that would have very low environmental impact and that are assessed positively in terms of dredging and reclamation.

“A recent report released by Victoria University estimates that a Bay West option is likely to require only half the amount of dredging Ms Henderson is claiming, with no blasting of the Heads.

“A Hastings port option would also require significant dredging in the order of 24 million cubic metres.

“Both options are environmentally sensitive, which is why Labor believes in seeking independent advice including an environmental assessment and business case.

“A Labor Government will direct an independent infrastructure body to investigate the best location for a second container port, including options in the Bay West region.”

An odd-looking bulge in his snout housed a cavity that scientists believe gave SuperCroc a super sense of smell and an unusual call, making him a

deadly and terrifying adversary to his hapless victims.

His upwards-tilted eye sockets, almost like eyeballs on stalks, allowed him to conceal his bus-sized body underwater while scrutinising the landscape for prey.

The SuperCroc and Polar Dinos exhibition includes all manner of bones, skulls – including fearsome tyrannosaurs – artist impressions, field notes, models, fossils, photographs and information panels.

The exhibition opens tonight and runs until mid-November.

THE DISABLED face “huge” cost blowouts for taxi travel under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) trial in Geelong, a parliamentary committee has heard.

The committee’s report on the Barwon trial site said local demand could skyrocket to 20,000 trips.

Geelong Taxi Network chief Peter Valentine told the committee the prospect was frightening.

“I’m totally scared, unless we get it right down here, about what will happen when it hits a capital city,” Mr Valentine said.

“We’re told we could have 2000 people in the space of a couple of years under this program.

“If they travel morning and night five days a week that’s 20,000 individual entries for a little company like ours.”

Mr Valentine said meeting an NDIS requirement to dispatch a single taxi for multiple users was impossible due to administrative issues.

“If we allow people to travel individually all of the time...those costs will blow out hugely. It causes huge bottlenecks at the respective areas where we drop off or pick up if we have too many cars in the one area.”

Mr Valentine said the NDIS was supplying transport plans for taxis far too late, causing numerous problems.

He was concerned the system was open to abuse because operators struggled to identify NDIS customers.

WHOA! What a croc!

Meet Sarcosuchus imperator, the prehistoric king of crocodiles.

At 11 metres long, 9000kg and with jaws like an industrial-sized lacerating guillotine, he’s the world’s biggest ever crocodile.

‘SuperCroc’ might be 110 million years old but he’s taken up residency at Geelong’s National Wool Museum for the next couple of months – all steel-frame supported scales and fibreglass, gleaming evil eyes and wickedlooking teeth.

And hungrily regarding his dinosaur exhibition mates, by the looks of him.

SuperCroc has come to Geelong courtesy of Sydney’s Australian Museum and National Geographic Channel. His exhibition mates, bizarre polar dinosaurs from Victoria’s southwest, arrived via Monash University.

The SuperCroc model on show is based on a 1.5-metre giant Sarcosuchus skull found in the Sahara Desert.

A cast of the skull and its jaws studded with more than 100 teeth is also on show thanks to a loan from Northern Territory’s Museum and Art Gallery.

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN MANY Geelong coffee connoisseurs would recall the halcyon days of the Kit Kat Restaurant.

The venue was the first to serve espressos on one of the original coffee machines imported to Geelong in 1957 from Italy.

The same machine is in great nick and still creating marvellous brews for Moolap’s The Coffee Man, George Alem.

George’s parents, Michael and Su, were part of the 1950s Geelong coffee culture, with around 20 cafés all serving espressos or cappuccinos piled high with milky froth.

Names like the Rio, Nevada Felino’s and Phoenix were all well-known, along with the Kit Kat on the corner of Lt Malop and McCann Sts. “I bought the Kit Kat coffee machine from Jamel Muhor who runs the Lord Nelson and Fishbowl and who worked at the Kit Kat in the ’50s,” George said.

“He bought the machine from Kit Kat owner Loui Felafel when they put in a bigger machine in about 1960.

“People used to line the footpath in an orderly line at the Kit Kat with coffee cups and saucers in hand waiting to get a coffee.

“The cafe didn’t have enough cups and saucers to cope with the crowds.”

Crash cop on drug-driving charge A POLICE officer was allegedly under the influence of drugs when he was involved in a Geelong “traffic collision” earlier this year.

Victoria Police has confirmed the officer was a Senior constable from a “western region station”.

The policeman was charged following a professional standards command investigation

into the collision in Geelong in June.

He was charged with failing to render assistance after an accident, driving under the influence of drugs and other driving-related offences.

Victoria Police said the policeman had been suspended without pay to appear in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 8 October.

I WAS so excited to see Liberal candidate Ron Nelson at the Drysdale supermarket last weekend and to hear that the Liberals had promised $7million for a new Drysdale/Clifton Springs sports precinct (Geelong Independent, 12 September).

I believe it is absolutely essential that the funding is enough for the project to be completed as soon as possible so the sporting clubs of Drysdale and Clifton Springs can grow and flourish.

Labor’s promise of $3.5 million only represents half of the cost of stage one, so it’s good to see that the Liberals have done proper costings.

It’s disappointing that after 12 long years Member for Bellarine Lisa Neville has only now found out how desperately in need our communities are for this investment into sporting facilities.

It’s probably because she doesn’t live on the Bellarine Peninsula and never has.

Riggs ready to rock the QMF

By Emily Iannello AIR GUITARS are common at gigs but it’s rare when Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page turns up playing one at an Aussie band’s show in London’s Notting Hill.

But after the unlikely experience on a tour of Europe, Melbourne-based rock and roll group The Delta Riggs hopes for similar reaction from punters at this year’s Queenscliff Music Festival (QMF).

Former Wolfmother member Elliot Hammond said the audience could expect a “finely tuned rock show” from his new band, formed in 2010.

“We’ve just come back from Europe, where we’ve been playing in a lot of clubs and festivals.

The band is in really good form at the moment because we’ve been playing so much,” Hammond enthused.

Vocalist Hammond’s bandmates are Michael Tramonte on bass, Alex Markwell on guitar and drummer Simon McConnell, with “an extra person” usually joining the band for live shows.

Hammond said The Delta Riggs QMF sets would include songs from new album Dipz Zebazios, which was due for release this month.

He described the album as featuring a boisterous and “tripped out party atmosphere”.

Queenscliff would be the first time the band had played the new album live, he said.

However, The Delta Riggs had played the QMF before.

“We played at QMF about two years ago. It was really good down there,” Hammond said.

“There’s some really exciting bands on this year as well.”

Hammond likened The Delta Riggs to a mushroom because it drew inspiration for its music “from the atmosphere”.

“Mushrooms draw in gases from the atmosphere and turn them into nutritional matter,” he explained.

“Similarly, we draw on things from the atmosphere to make music.”

Hammond said he was particularly excited about seeing legendary indie band The Church at Queenscliff.

“I’m looking forward to getting among it and having a fun day out,” he said.

“We’ve missed that. We’re looking forward to getting back.”

Other headliners at the QMF in November will include Dan Sultan, Husky, The Jezabels, Kasey Chambers and Xavier Rudd.

Blink unveils a new body of dance women in the ’40s and ’50s in her search of a definition of women by women,” Quick explained.

“Her writing was both poetic and symbolic, revealing her inner-life, unapologetically passionate and honest.”

Blink’s new work explores challenging questions around gender, female identity, social norms and the relationship between lived experiences and the physical body.

A group of local contemporary dancers established Blink in late 2012, with Quick at the helm to guide the aim of creating highcalibre, accessible dance theatre works presented locally and throughout regional Victoria.

Blink Dance Theatre’s Written on the Body was inspired by the life of iconic writer Anais Nin, famous for her published journals, which acted as a precursor to the feminist movement.

Blink uses creative stagecraft and innovative video projection coupled with visceral physicality to explore the power of literature to change and shape lives.

IT’S AN old rule when going out to watch a comedian perform on stage: don’t park too close to the front.

It’s best typified in the Les Patterson experience where anyone who gets too close to the dishevelled Barry Humphries character is virtually assured of ending up covered in water, spittle or something else unsavoury and that’s if they’re lucky.

Irish comic Jason Byrne, headed Geelong’s way this weekend, is a little less likely to smother audience members in bodily fluids but anyone who doesn’t fancy being hauled on stage and lampooned mercilessly should park themselves a little further back in the crowd.

This year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival featured Byrne hauling one hapless Geelong mug up on stage and haranging him with with several other suckers in tow in what can only be described as hilarious fashion.

The first copped a pasting over the pronunciation of his home town, Ballina, the third a withering denunciation of his Keilor as Kilo and Geelong’s Shane a ragging for his anal-like certainty of travel times.

Asked Byrne: “Where you from Shane?”

Shane: “Geelong.”

Byrne: “Is that far from here?”

Shane: “An hour.”

Byrne: “Exactly?”

Shane: “Roughly.”

Byrne: “Roughly?”

Byrne’s best resource is often the punter coming to hear him - and sitting in the front rows.

Of course, 15 minutes of fame might be right up a Byrne fan’s alley but they should consider themselves well-cautioned if heading to Geelong Performing Arts Centre this Saturday night to see him, a comedian that Britain’s The Times christened “The king of live comedy”.

Byrne’s a regular face in Australia and starred at Melbourne International Comedy Festival in April.

He’s back in Australia just this week after tearing up Edinburgh where he was consistently the biggestselling comedy act in the history of the city’s fringe festival.

Byrne’s credit list is as long as his arm, including most recently a 2013 Royal Variety Performance, The Graham Norton Show and Live at the Apollo on BBC1 as well as his own show, Anonymous, in Ireland.

In Australia Byrne is a regular on the prestigious Melbourne International Comedy Festival annual televised galas and The Great Debate as well as Network Ten’s The Project and This Week Live.

Hotondo best for its Dakota NICK and Allie Barker, of Hotondo Homes at Ocean Grove, were among the best at this year’s HIA regional housing awards earlier this month.

The Barkers won the top gong for their Dakota 237 design in the Display Home up to $300,000 category.

Hotondo Homes was one of a small handfull of builders in the Geelong region to win categories at the HIA awards for south-western Victoria.

The winners now go on to compete for state-level awards.

The husband-and-wife team was delighted with the result and thrilled to earn recognition for their hard work and quality workmanship.

Roll up for holiday fun ROLLERWAY in Newtown offers lots of fun and exercise for children during school holidays – regardless of the weather.

With roller skating undergoing a resurgence and rollerblading still as popular as ever, kids will be keen to pull on their skates during holidays.

With extra holiday session times scheduled, skating is available seven days a week. Rollerway offers a variety of activities to keep kids of all ages entertained.

Rink operator Raul Aparicio says the sessions are always fun with music videos, lights and lots of games and activities throughout.

“It’s a really fun and safe activity

for kids of all ages,” Raul says.

Rollerway also has a separate indoor skate park for skateboarding, scooters and BMX riders.

“Our skate park is very popular and a great alternative to outdoor parks,” Raul says.

The centre is also available for children’s functions.

“We have lots of birthday parties at the centre and the introduction of the separate skate park, disco lounge and jumping castle areas have helped modernise the activities,” Raul says.

In-line roller hockey is another feature at Newtown, with Geelong boasting Australia’s biggest independent roller hockey league.

SIMONDS Stadium will be fun central over school holidays as Leisure Networks runs a two-day total sport program for kids.

Targetting little tackers from grades four to six, Catland central will play host to football, netball and soccer-loving kids in a terrific multi-sport program guaranteed to keep them kicking, throwing, running and using up mountains of youthful energy.

“Delivered by experienced coaches, the program suits kids of all abilities and includes a tour of the stadium. How cool is that?” says Leisure Networks’ Michael King.

“It’ll two days of mass fun, mass games for the kids of all sporting abilities. They can take some quality coaching and take part in really fun interactive sporting games.

“The program will also include tour of the Cats’ inner-sanctum where we’ll take them deep into Simonds Stadium and have

good look through. You never know who you might find there, either.”

Leisure Networks is a not-for-profit registered charity working with individuals, community groups, sporting and recreation clubs and local government across the greater Geelong region.

Based at the stadium’s Sports House, Leisure Networks has been focused on creating and providing programs for people with disability to achieve their aspirations and be part of their community.

Working closely with sporting clubs and communities groups, the organisaiton supports them to create healthy, inclusive and successful places where people from all backgrounds are welcomed.

By Josip Zilic NORTH Geelong Warriors sealed its National Premier League promotion with a 1-0 victory over St Albans last Saturday courtesy a Mark Paleka goal at the 78th minute.

Jubilation swamped the Warriors’ home ground as the fans and playing staff began setting their sights on the challenges of taking on league heavyweights Green Gully, South Melbourne and Melbourne Knights in 2015.

The match was a tense battle in which both sides had their keepers to thank for keeping them in the game.

Daniel Zilic pulled off a fine low reflex save from a Nicholas Cullen attempt in the sixth minute and moments later it was

Stuart Webster’s turn when he parried past his left post from a Robert Zadworny over-theshoulder snap.

In the 31st minute Webster almost undid his good early work when he misjudged a long ball, which Juso Julardzija reached first only to lose control of it in the sandy penalty area.

Little changed in the second half as both sides played tentatively to take a grip of the game.

The Warriors looked to be making ground as a late challenge by Michael Grgic almost went against the grain until Adam Nakic curled the free kick just shy of the post.

WITH perfect weather and snapper on the move last weekend, anglers reported great results on the bay.

Corio Bay produced some exceptional fish to 10kg.

Dalibor Smek was anchored on the bay at one of his favourite marks when a 10kg snapper took his pilchard bait, lightly weighted on 2.7kg line. He managed to boat the trophy fish only after a drawn-out fight.

Other anglers on the bay caught pinkie snapper among the Western Beach moorings, along with flathead to 40cm, on soft plastics.

Further down at Clifton Springs squid were on the go and, unlike previous weeks, some good-size specimens were among them. The weed beds toward the long, broken jetty held squid over 1kg, which took 2.5 and 3-size jigs.

Anglers sounded up snapper at The Turn but the amount of small pinkies made it difficult to keep baits on the bottom.

St Leonards continued producing King George whiting at the area now known as

Bourke St due to the concentration of boats consistently anchored up.

Queenscliff’s harbour continued to fish well for silver trevally to 45cm on soft plastics around the tide changes. Smaller Australian salmon to 800g were also landed.

Anglers fishing for trevally in the harbour at this time of year occasionally hook snapper to 4kg, which ends up being a big fight on usual soft plastics tackle.

The Barwon River estuary held excellent numbers of King George whiting to 33cm and Australian Salmon to 35cm during the week as well as odd mulloway to 70cm.

The Surf Coast’s Devil’s Elbow produced Australian salmon to 2kg on bait-

fish-profile 25g lures in pilchard colours.

The salmon were reported to be in great numbers, with anglers landing 10 fish or more in a session.

Darren Wloch headed out off Torquay last weekend in search of snapper, bagging a 6kg fish on fresh squid in 20m of water.

Steve Prior took his mate Nick Albutt out to Wurdee Boluc Reservoir on Monday afternoon. Nick disproved the reservoir’s reputation as the lake of 1000 casts, catching his first ever trout, a brown trout of 2kg, with a Fish Arrow soft plastic.

Lake Wendouree continued producing brown trout for anglers trolling and casting Norries Laydown minnows and Strike Pro Bob N Spoons.

Anglers fishing first and last light reported the best results whether using lure or bait, with the browns averaging 1.5kg and a few specimens pushing 2kg.

Vikkie Curran fished Wendouree last Sunday with mudeye under a float, landing a brown of 1.84kg.

Carp were on the chew in the Barwon River for anyone fishing corn on a lightly weighted running sinker rig. Queen’s Park Bridge and Breakwater were hot spots for carp to 5kg.

Anyone going fishing this weekend should consider trying The Turn off Clifton Springs with pilchards and fresh squid for snapper. Otherwise squid might be worth targeting from Clifton Springs to Queenscliff.
