Cr Lyons was available to attend but confirmed the opposition failed to invite him.

Opposition leader Daniel Andrews launched a pitch for votes when he announced $70 million for Simonds Stadium’s stage-four upgrade and $30 million for the first stage of a Geelong Performing Arts Centre redevelopment. “It was disappointing, not only as mayor but also as chair of (regional councils alliance body) G21,� said Cr Lyons, a Liberal party member. “I don’t know why I wasn’t invited. “I’ve championed those projects. I’m all about getting the most funding I can for Geelong. “As far as I am concerned, politics doesn’t come into it.�

But captivating teenager Elodie Russell is taking the distance in her stride with a blossoming career as an international model.

A Labor spokesperson said the $100 million package for the stadium and GPAC would create jobs for the region. “The mayor has plenty of opportunities to meet with Mr Andrews, as he’s in Geelong on a regular basis.�

The stadium project will include replacement of its Brownlow and Jennings stands, increasing capacity to 36,000.

Sports Minister Damien Drum said he was surprised Labor would fund the entire stadium upgrade without seeking a federal contribution.

He labeled the announcement “typical Labor waste�, warning $70 million would be “ripped out of community sport�.

Double Take GEELONG filmmaker Kristy Fuller was less than impressed when she couldn’t find her purse anywhere.

She turned the house upside down, called the last place where she had it and convinced herself it was lost.

She spent all morning cancelling and reordering her licence, Medicare cards, personal bank cards, business bank cards, credit cards, zoo membership...

The she returned home to put the laundry on and, well, guess what she found in the washing machine.

Her terse comments identified the suspect of the intended money laundering operation.

Asked about North Melbourne talisman Brent Harvey, who sat out the team’s elimination final against Essendon with suspension for lashing out at a tagger, Scott started on the standard response.

“We’re not going in with a plan to antagonise Boomer Harvey,” he began.

But pressed as to whether it might be worth a try, Scott recanted, to the amusement of the media pack.

“Actually, yes, now that you mention it. Everything is worth a try.”

“What is that smell?” she wondered.

“Oh wait, it’s the single women of Geelong setting their houses on fire.”

Councils’ social media turns up pier pressure

By NOEL MURPHY THE REGION’S councils have launched a Yarra Street Pier social media campaign after the state opposition turned its back on their top-priority project.

Targetting Premier Denis Napthine and Greens leader Greg Barber, the campaign of councils alliance body G21 also followed Costa Property Group promoting its ageing Cunningham Pier as an alternative berth for cruise ships.

G21 chief Elaine Carbines described the opposition’s snubbing of the Yarra Street Pier proposal in favour of further Simonds Stadium upgrades as “disappointing”.

“I think the opposition has ruled out supporting the Yarra Street Pier for this election, which is disappointing but that’s their choice,” she said.

“We’re now focusing on local MPs pursuing funding for a business case for the pier. We hope they see the merit - all the five councils do and support the redevelopment of the pier and its benefits.”

G21, comprising Geelong, Surf Coast, Golden Plains, Queenscliff and Colac-Otway councils, expects a Yarra Street Pier for cruise ships to generate $61 million in business locally and $80 million statewide over 10 years, creating 522 jobs and 218 during construction.

Labor this week overlooked the pier proposal to instead committ $70 million to the stadium and $30 million to redevelop Geelong Performing Arts Centre, G21’s equal top priority.

G21’s campaign focussed on Geelong’s potential to capitalise on a burgeoning cruise ship industry, the fastest-growing tourism sector in the world.

Ms Carbines said the campaign was already “creating quite a bit of attention”.

The opposition thought it was on a “vote-winner” with Simonds Stadium, she said..

“But we’re yet to see whether it is or not. It’s an important piece infrastructure to finish off and to... try for nine games a season where at moment it’s only getting seven.

“That’s the gamble the opposition has taken.”

Ms Carbines hoped State Government would support the pier project.

Assessments had shown the project would be “more cost-efficient” than upgrading “the old Cunningham Pier”, she said.

Any consideration of using Cunningham Pier would also have to factor in the Costa group’s sale price, previously $20 million.

Youth choir pulling strings to stage fist puppet show

Investigators arrested John Nelis at an address in Fairbairn Dve, Corio, after a three-week manhunt in Geelong’s northern suburbs.

The motoring body said smashed windows, “keying” of panels and denting had left the city and south-west Victoria with Victoria’s biggest insurance claims bill for damage to cars.

Panel revealed CITY Hall has revealed a futuristic prototype panel for the dome of Geelong’s new library and heritage centre.

The panel, manufactured at North Geelong’s Kane Constructions, is one of 332 that will make up the skin of the dome, with installation scheduled to begin early in 2015.

A VAST cast of singing and dancing puppets is set to put on a bright and colourful show as Geelong Youth Choir expands its range.

The puppets will bring a series of stories to life with a menagerie of eye-catching puppets including diva cats, singing flowers and vegetables and an animal choir.

Youth choir director Denise Hollingworth promised lots of toetapping tunes and upbeat music and fun for children of all ages, especially three-to-nine-year-olds.

“The idea for the puppet show came about when we were planning a special concert for the younger preschool children in our Let’s Make Music program,” Denise explained.

“We soon discovered the joy of puppeteering and wanted to explore it further.

“The senior choir worked on the planning, props, scripting, puppet choreography, vocals and staging.

“It’s been a valuable and enjoyable experience all round. It seems you’re never too old to enjoy the magic of puppets.

“The choristers have had a blast this term and it’s led to lots of improvisation and creativity, something we really value in music and the arts.

“Our two younger choirs will also join in with parts of the show.”

Geelong Youth Choir, a notfor-profit community group, has been offering music programs in Geelong for more than 25 years.

The choir will perform Puppet Song at St Luke’s Church hall, corner Barrabool and Scenic Rds, Highton, from 3pm Saturday.

Turnbull pulls plug on our TV

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN FEDERAL Government will pull the plug on Geelong's community television station next year.

Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced this week that community television licences for the “sixth channel” spectrum would cease at the end of 2015.

The spectrum would be sold, forcing Channel 31 off the air.

Mr Turnbull told community

stations to move to the internet.

The Tribe Television and Video producer Adam Tribe said the decision removed a valuable training ground for the industry.

“It is a great training and a breeding ground for future production expertise. It has often been a stepping stone for both programs and people who have moved to the networks.

“It gives an opportunity for programs that might otherwise

not see the light of day. It is an extremely competitive industry with a lot of people vying to get into it and opportunities are scarce."

Mr Tribe, who ran GOTV in Geelong online for several years before selling it due to lack of business support, said suggesting community television simply moves to the internet was too simplistic.

“Television production as opposed to online video is signifi-

cantly different. To throw a line out there that one can replace the other is incorrect and misleading.

“They're very different beasts.

You won’t have the same content, duration of content or striving for quality of content.

“You have got a real audience now but on the internet you will lose your audience.”

News Geelong producer Noel Fanning said Mr Turnbull demonstrated limited understanding

of the communications industry.

“Local football and local news won’t get a look in anymore,” Mr Fanning said.

“Community television is self-sufficient. It’s not costing the government anything but (closing it) will cost lot of jobs.

Mr Fanning said local audiences were "still not ready" for online TV. Media student Zoe Hollingsworth described the decision as

a “terrible idea”.

“It’s strange how the Government just decided this and expected everyone to go along with it.

“Media students have only very few avenues as there is and Channel 31 is one. It’s crucial as a media student.

"This is a real setback.”

Channel 31 broadcasts 90 first-run locally produced programs weekly to a cumulative monthly audience of around 1.4 million viewers.

Motor City festival rocks on with major events help Federal changes

Director Hugo T Armstrong said the festival had secured major events funding from City Hall after a successful baptism earlier this year.

The inaugural event featured leading Australian blues and rock acts alongside some of the country's top tribute bands.

“We're pumped to be able to reprise what we delivered at the inaugural Motor City Music Festival,” Armstrong told the Independent.

“In all my years running festivals I’ve received lots of compliments and been very privileged but I’ve never been so overwhelmed as I was at Motor City.

“People were telling me all weekend, ‘This is exactly what Geelong needs, this is great’ - that was the number-one comment all weekend.

There were so many proud Geelong people.”

“I went to the first festival and

“He had a fantastic variety of bands indoors and outdoors and, now he has a product to sell, I’m sure we’ll get a lot more people.”

Armstrong said next year's event would include new tribute bands and blues acts alongside some big names in country and rock music.

Motor City would release its first performer list next month, he said.

NEW federal funding arrangements have "gagged" Barwon Community Legal Service, according to Member for Corio Richard Marles.

Mr Marles told parliament this week the “unfair and illogical” arrangements put greater pressure on limited resources.

“By prohibiting the use of federal funding for all forms of advocacy, the government is effectively attempting to gag our legal services,” he said.

“At the same time, since the Liberals have come to government the Barwon Community Legal Service has received large numbers of requests to provide submissions to a broad range of inquiries.

“On the one hand, the Abbott Government is seeking the expert advice of our community legal centres but on the other it does not want to listen to them.

“It makes no sense. I sincerely hope that the Abbott Government reconsiders this unfair and illogical funding arrangement.”

Mr Marles said services such as the legal service were best placed to draw on their specialist expertise and experience to advocate for law reforms.

Barwon Community Legal Service executive officer Nick Hudson said the new arrangements would increase stress on the delivery of frontline services and result in the inefficient use of resources.

HE MIGHT have undertaken 3000 operations on sick children in Third World countries, teaching doctors along the way, but Barwon Health doesn’t want him operating on its patients.

Professor Paddy Dewan has travelled overseas 100 times with the humanitarian medical body he started, Kind Cuts for Kids.

He’s worked in Gaza, Bangladesh, Kosovo, Albania, Vietnam, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Bosnia, Thailand, India and Papua New Guinea.

But he was sacked from working with Geelong’s peak public health body.

A former chairman of Victoria’s College of Surgeons, Prof Dewan set up Kind Cuts for Kids after operating on victims of a 1989 Russian train disaster that killed 800 people.

“It was in Chelyabinsk. Three-hundred more people were injured, 150 of them sent to each of two hospitals. I was there 10 days,” he told the Independent.

“That resulted in me returning to Australia and contacting people about how I might be involved in teaching in under-privileged countries. In 1993 I went to Bangladesh and New Guinea because I was selected by College of Surgeons after I put my hand up to teach.”

Prof Dewan makes about four trips a year, each for around two weeks. He receives no pay and loses money while working away from Australia.

He delivers a wide range of procedures on his travels, according to both his training, other available medical skills and access to resources.

The non-government, not-forprofit body operates without an office or staff, relying on volunteers and the goodwill of surgeons around the world.

Prof Dewan told the Independent last month that he lost his job after complaining about another surgeon then alleging the reviewer handling his complaint had a conflict of interest.

The reviewer was the person who dismissed Prof Dewan after 16 years with Barwon Health, he said.

Prof Dewan called for a royal commission into the national health regulator and hospital administration decisions adversely affecting health professionals.

Barwon Health dismissed his claims, saying Prof Dewan was one of three surgeons it no longer required after deciding to use Royal Children’s Hospital for paediatric surgeries.

Geelong mother Tricia Connoley praised Prof Dewan’s work, saying he had cared for her daughter for 20 years, regularly going beyond expectations or professional duties.

“He’s a humanitarian who’s been treated inhumanely. It’s very unfair,” she told the Independent.

A $7.5 MAKEOVER in central Geelong could create almost 90 jobs after the latest pre-election commitment to the city.

The Napthine Government announced on Wednesday $3 million to complete funding for City Hall’s Central Geelong Revitalisation Project.

In more cash splashes, Premier Dennis Napthine also announced funding for Drysdale-Clifton Springs sport precinct and upgrades to Belmont High School.

“I am delighted to see the ongoing development of the City of Greater Geelong, Victoria’s biggest regional city,” Mr Napthine said.

The revitalisation project would have “numerous social, economic and environmental benefits” for Geelong, he said.

“It will enhance liveability, create new opportunities for property and business investments, expand demand and supply of goods and services and attract visitors and new residents.”

Mr Napthine said the project had “potential” to create 45 direct jobs and 40 indirectly “due to enhanced business opportunities”.

WORK on a controversial $1 million performance space in an Ocean Grove public park could start in days after moves to stop it were “resoundingly” rejected.

Ocean Grove Park Association president Colin Atkins said a contract had already been let for the construction of the project.

The Independent has reported over the last few months that battlelines were drawn over the controversial proposal.

A group of park association members pushed for a special general meeting to restrict the

committee to financial decisions under $20,000, which would have stopped the proposal. But the motion was defeated 220 votes to 90.

The project will be funded with $500,000 from State Government, $200,000 from City of Greater Geelong, $153,000 from the park association and $150,000 from Ocean Grove Connecting Communities.

Mr Atkins said Magellan Projects was awarded the $874,500 contract.

“The price is within budget with adequate funds available for the supervision of the project and for (extra) fittings and fit-out.

“Magellan Projects is an experienced building contractor based in Geelong utilising local trades and suppliers. It has successfully completed projects in metropolitan and regional Victoria across various market sectors including commercial, retail, education and community.”

The project was earmarked for completion in late February 2015.

Mr Atkins said the association was seeking expressions of interest to join a performance space management committee.

The committee would draft an operations manual and seek bookings, he said.

Letters Mulder’s wobbly road STATE Roads Minister Terry Mulder has announced a two-year delay in the Geelong-Winchelsea highway duplication despite promising less than six months ago it would be finished by Christmas.

Funny, that, six months of bad weather causing a two-year delay. That logic only makes sense to a politician trying desperately not to explain why the duplication is not a priority.

He blamed the contractors’ inability to build during winter. Of course, a contractor who could build in Victoria’s mild winters could have been found they manage it in Northern Europe, North America, Japan and Korea, all of which have real winters.

Everything governments do now is about politics and getting 51 per cent of the vote. It does not matter how many wobbly promises are made as long as they get lots of pictures in the news.

If State Government really wanted to get things done it would not spend hundreds of millions of dollars telling us what it has started but spend the same money on actually finishing something.

But that is of course a naive view of modern politics and politicians who care more about focus groups and newspaper polls than achievements Russell Greenwood Colac

Fixing Labor’s TAFE bungle OPPOSITION MPs and candidates who have signed the TAFE pledge fail to concede that it was the former Brumby Labor government that bungled its attempts to reform the TAFE industry in 2008 by opening the market up to competition from the private sector without extra support.

Unlike Labor, the Coalition Government is working closely with TAFEs, investing a $200 million structural adjustment fund to help them innovate and adapt to the market-driven training system introduced by Labor.

The opposition continues to talk down and undermine vocational education in Geelong. The coalition remains committed to delivering training that leads to long-term, meaningful jobs in the region.

Funding for Gordon Institute of TAFE has increased nine per cent since 2010 to $59 million. Enrolments have grown eight per cent over the same period.

The Napthine Government is investing a record $1.2 billion each year in Victoria’s training system, up almost 50 per cent on Labor’s last budget in 2010.

Parking my priority for workers in Geelong IT WAS great to join the Premier Denis Napthine at the official opening of the Energy Australia Call Centre in Moorabool St recently.

Here we will eventually have an additional 300 jobs in our CBD, creating more activity with employees no doubt shopping, dining and socialising in the heart of town.

The call centre, together with the NDIA and Workcover coming to Geelong, means more jobs for our region, which is fantastic news but we do need to address the issue of parking to accommodate this influx of people to our city centre.

If elected I will explore options to increase parking in the CBD and for commuters.

Tiered parking at Geelong Railway Station’s car park on Latrobe Tce is worth consideration. This over-crowded car park is a favourite for train travellers, Gordon students and city workers.

I believe a tiered car park might help address the shortage of city parking and potentially link with the train station, providing easier access. bor was last in office.

A half yearly training market report 2014 shows positive results for job creation, with the coalition funding training programs in areas of skills shortage that enhance employment opportunities for all age groups.

Mercury rising in Queen show

By Emily Iannello BEELZEBUB, Galileo, Scaramouche, fandangos - Queen fans can get out their best harmonies and air guitars for a top-line tribute band headed Geelongâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s way.

Queen: Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s A Kinda Magic will relive the legendary British rock bandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s halcyon days of hits such as We Will Rock You, Bohemian Rhapsody and We Are the Champions.

The tribute show will play Geelong Performing Arts Centre a little over a month after the actual Queen tour Australia with Adam Lambert in place of frontman Freddie Mercury, who died in 1991.

English-Canadian performer Giles Taylor has taken on the demanding Mercury role in the tribute show.

Taylor has been travelling the world the past 13 years, performing with artists such as Blurâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Damon Albarn, Gabrielle, Rick Wakeman and The Moody Blues.

Taylor told the Independent the Queen gig was his toughest so far. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is the biggest challenge ever,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s physically and vocally exhausting. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s such an incredible task, a wonderful challenge.â&#x20AC;?

Taylor said â&#x20AC;&#x153;trueâ&#x20AC;? Queen fans would appreciate the attention to detail in the tribute show.

The show had introduced a new generation of fans to the Queen phenomenon, Taylor said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When we set out to do the show we thought the audience would mainly be older Queen fans but weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re also seeing a younger crowd. â&#x20AC;&#x153;People in their teens are coming. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s incredible that people who werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even alive when Queen was performing want to come and see us.â&#x20AC;?

Taylor believed that Queenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s enduring popularity was easy to explain. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re one of the few bands that produced a great number of classic rock tunes,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re talking late â&#x20AC;&#x2122;70s rock when Queen was up there with the biggest names, if not the biggest name. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They were iconic and had a long career and I think that creates for a long shelf-life after that.â&#x20AC;?

Taylor said the show attracted the attention of Mercuryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s former personal assistant, Peter Freestone, who now toured with the band when his schedule allowed.

Freestone had praised the tribute show as the closest he had seen to the real thing.

The Queen concert would be Taylorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s second time in Geelong as a performer. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was there a couple of years ago for a completely different show but I was playing the piano. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nice to come back and do it from the front of the stage this time.â&#x20AC;?

A TRIO of local performers is harmonising its way around the Bellarine Peninsula with the songs of a famous folk group from the 1960s.

Marion Rose, Stewart Firth and Jon Mamonski say family and friends encouraged them to go public after noting â&#x20AC;&#x153;how closeâ&#x20AC;? they sounded to the original Peter, Paul and Mary.

The three describe themselves as â&#x20AC;&#x153;huge fansâ&#x20AC;? of the American group, which had a series of hits

with songs like The Times They are a Changing, Blowing in the Wind, If I Had a Hammer and Puff the Magic Dragon.

Mamonski said the groupâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 1964 concert album, which sold seven million copies worldwide, inspired local performances of Peter, Paul and Marion.

The trio had mimicked the harmonies of its â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;60s namesake at events on the peninsula including Ocean Groveâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Carols at the Park, the annual lighting of Point

Lonsdaleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Christmas Tree and Queenscliff Lighthouse Theatre shows, he said.

Peter, Paul and Marionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s next show would relive their heroesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; â&#x20AC;&#x153;glory daysâ&#x20AC;? in a two-hour concert at Queenscliff Uniting Church.

Tickets for the show, beginning 7.30pm on 19 September, were available at the door or from Queenscliff Information Centre, Mamonski said.

Foster Carers

GEELONG couple Beth and Adam, who have four young children of their own, care for three foster children.

They have cared for 13 children over the past four years.

Beth and Adam urge more people to take the leap and become foster carers with MacKillop Family Services during national Foster Care Week from 14 to 20 September.

“I wanted to provide kids with a stable home and with the security of knowing we’ll stick with them through their ups and downs,” Beth says.

“They’re often dealing with difficult pasts and I feel we’re

giving them hope for a brighter future.”

The couple has cared for children of different ages and from various backgrounds. Some have stayed with them for just a few nights, others have been with them a few years.

“The biggest impact on our family has been uncovering the sad world many children are exposed to,” Beth says.

“We all feel blessed to have the opportunity to love some gorgeous young people who have left us with lasting impressions and happy memories.”

National Foster Care Week highlights the urgent need for

more foster carers in the community, with more than 40,000 children experiencing out-of-home care in 2013 across Australia.

“Many people often comment that they’ve thought about becoming foster carers themselves but for one reason or another haven’t taken that leap,” Beth says.

“This week is the perfect week to take the leap.”

MacKillop provides all foster carers with ongoing support, training and regular breaks.

Calm conditions improve angling CALM conditions over the weekend enticed many anglers to chase large squid off Queenscliff.

Fishing World Geelong’s Michael Moore cast a Gan Craft Kurosio Sunset jig in size 3 for a bag of eight squid to 1.5kg. Michael noted that aggressively working the jib yielded the best results.

Other anglers fishing Queenscliff caught King George whiting to 45cm with pippies and tenderized squid on the grass beds to the left of the harbour.

Anglers fishing soft plastics inside the harbour landed silver trevally to 40cm on the tide changes.

Dylan Pace and Matt Alsop caught both trevally and Australian salmon with Z-Man plastics.

Daniel Baden and I set out from St Leonards in search of squid on Saturday afternoon. We motored over to the mouth of Swan Bay where we quickly caught a bag of squid on white Shimano 14T jigs in size 2.5.

I saw other anglers catching whiting just out from the boat ramp, although smaller than the fish at Queenscliff. Some huge gummy shark to 21kg were also taken off St Leonards recently on fresh squid.

Portarlington Pier produced Australian salmon for anglers casting 25g metal slugs. Squid were caught at night around the pier lights.

Calm nights allowed anglers to wade the shallows off Clifton Springs and Portarlington for flathead, flounder and many other species. The flathead were quiet but flounder were plentiful.

Geelong’s waterfront produced pinkie snapper to 50cm on Gulp turtleback worms. Western Beach moorings held the best-sized schools, with the key to success sounding around to locate the fish then drifting over the area with soft plastic lures bumping off the bottom.

Bream were caught in the grammar school Lagoon on vibe lures fished under the moored boats.

Conditions were excellent along the Surf Coast where Australian salmon reaching 2kg were taken while spinning the beaches. Anglers chasing bream in the small estuaries caught fish to 40cm on hardbody lures and Bass yabbies.

Local lakes also fished well in the calm conditions. Anglers trolling deep at Lake Bullen Merri boated excellent-sized Chinook salmon to 2.2kg.

Trolling at 15m to 20m was apparently more effective than fishing bait, especially with larger lures such as the Rapala F-9s.

The Chinook were smaller next door at Lake Purrumbete, averaging 1kg but readably available for anglers fishing deep with pilchard fillets amid a liberal berley trail.

Brown trout were also caught while trolling early morning or fishing mudeye suspended under a float.

Moorabool Reservoir produced some trophysized redfin. Successful anglers had to work hard for their catches, some up to 45cm.

Don Munro headed up to Lake Bostock to try his luck on the Chinook salmon last Friday afternoon.

Don started casting brightly coloured Tassie Devils, catching a Chinook of 675g and another of 560g.

McConville back GEELONG cyclist Chloe McConville will return after months of illness to compete in this week’s inaugural Amy’s Otway Classic, organisers have announced.

McConville was forced out of Australia’s development team in Europe earlier this year with lung and leg clots from deep vein thrombosis.

She was off her bike for more than three months before resuming training.

“After having so much time off I’m just really looking forward to being a part of it again, because that was something I struggled with.”

McConville had Glasgow’s Commonwealth Games and a professional contract in her sights when her illness struck.

“There was definitely some down days when I was almost ready to throw in the towel but the thing was to keep the bigger picture in sight.”

The 26-year-old spent the past 14 weeks completing an intense training program.

Cats’ test of relevance

GEELONG’S battle to defy the odds and remain a finals relevant team continues tonight against North Melbourne.

Losing to Hawthorn in last week’s qualifying final, relying on tried and tested performers, led to renewed questions about Geelong’s place in the AFL pantheon.

Commentators argued another flag would allow Hawthorn to claim equalera status with Geelong, conveniently overlooking the Hawks’ lower win percentage and lower finishes, including one season out of the finals altogether.

But Cats coach Chris Scott still has

the long-term firmly in mind while remaining upbeat about the team’s short-term prospects.

No one seriously expects the Cats to win through to the grand final this year - even Geelong supporters are almost resigned to the inevitable.

Add to that further injury setbacks, including ruckman Hamish McIntosh out with knee soreness, Steve Johnson still under a cloud and Allen Christensen struggling with a back injury, and the Cats could arguably have underdog status.

Scott admitted his younger players needed to step up this week but saw “room for optimism”.

“If we can turn around some of those performances and get a bit more

of an even contribution we’ll be in good shape.

“We’ve come up with some tangible things we need to monitor from the coaches box.”

Captain courageous Joel Selwood cited finals experience as a positive for the young brigade.

“The younger kids got another finals experience, performing in front of a big crowd and we’ll be better for the experience,” he said.

Scott agreed the experience would only help his newer charges.

“Short-term it gives all of our players and our coaches the opportunity to build some momentum and play a bit better than we did on the weekend.

“And if we do and it’s good enough then we can roll that momentum and good form into the week after.”

Scott said only fit Cats would face the Kangaroos.

“We’ll take in a team that’s absolutely capable of getting the job done, not only this week but into the next couple of weeks as well.

“I understand that when you’ve got a few injury concerns over individuals the perception can be that the team’s a bit wounded.

“We won’t be taking in a team that’s wounded or flat or with any excuses this Friday night. We’ll be ready to go, enthusiastic and planning to play our best footy.”

Warriors face destiny when Saints come marching in

By Josip Zilic NORTH Geelong Warriors’ destiny is in its own hands against fellow National Premier League promotion hopeful St Albans at Elcho Park tomorrow.

St Albans is a tough unit to break down, posting some strong performances prior to last weekend’s 2-1 loss to Richmond.

The Saints were up 1-0 with a man extra after Richmond had a player sent off. The intensity rose but St Albans lost a player and the momentum, copping two goals in the second half to dent its promotion charge.

North Geelong notched up a crucial 2-1 win away to Moreland on Sunday.

The home side was more composed early, stretching the Warriors’ midfield and putting the defence under pressure with numerous shots.

After some mistakes adjusting to the sandy pitch, the Warriors began to settle.

Robbie Zadworny made a break for a one-on-one with the keeper who saved well for a corner at the 33rd minute. Michael Anderson opened the scoring from the corner, rising to head across goal out of the reach of Nikola Kostadinovski The Zebras went close to equalising when Joel Nikolic tried to push the ball through a goal mouth scramble but was unable to trouble Zilic.

Moreland earned it’s reward five minutes after the break when Daniel Sweeney drove a grubbing shot from the edge of the box, hitting a lumpy patch of sand in front of the six-yard line to go over a diving Zilic in goals.

North Geelong responded in true style, combining well through the midfield. The Warriors thought they had the lead

again at the 70th minute when Zadworny was through on goal but the referee controversially ruled it out for a foul on Mile Medjedovic.

Two minutes later North Geelong put the result to rest when Nathan Long went on a length-of-the-field run, linking with Reardo Luka and Anderson to meet the ball in the penalty area and bury into the goals.

Moreland pressed hard to close out the match, with two efforts hitting the bar, but was unable to get the leveller.

North Geelong coach Micky Colina deflected talk of promotion after the match.

“We’ll talk after round 26.

Football’s a crazy game and anything’s possible,” he said.

Moreland coach Danny Gnjidic was annoyed at his team’s inability to put away chances.

“That sums up our season: we can play well but we’re just not clinical in front of the goals,” Gnjidic said.
