“One of the fires last month started because they didn’t have a grill on the fire place, so a log rolled out and it went from there.”

Ms Garrett said it was important that members of the public understood the need to be aware of their choices - especially around the home.

She said not leaving electric blankets on, not allowing a candle to burn when the house is empty and not using poor quality cheap batteries in smoke detectors were just some of the small ways that residents could protect themselves from devastating mistakes.

Ferntree Gully

FOUR house fires in the past month could have been avoided, according to the CFA. This week CFA District 13 Manager of Community Safety Tammy Garrett and Operations Officer Ian Cross met with the Mail to launch the Safe Mistakes Campaign.

“We need to let the public know that some mistakes could be avoided,” Ms Garrett said.

“These simple mistakes could lead to devastating house fires.”

Mr Cross said that in the past month there were four house fires, in Kalorama, Ferny Creek, Menzies Creek and Emerald, that could have been avoided.

THE Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit has had a busy week arresting and questioning a number of people in relation to crimes over the past year.

They included a 17-year-old Cranbourne youth interviewed in relation to a burglary at the 1000 Steps cafe.

Police said the youth had been questioned about a burglary in July.

A 29-year-old Rowville woman has been released on summons in relation to a burglary in Upwey in April.

A 16-year-old Wandin boy has been questioned in relation to the theft of a car in Kilysth in November last year.

and the $863 million investment in police and PSOs was the largest law and order recruitment exercise in the state’s history.

“The government is on track to reach its target of delivering above the original commitment of 940 PSOs at 216 rail stations across Victoria,” Mr Ronalds said.

“An independent survey of train passengers shows the presence of PSOs makes them feel safer at rail stations.

“Night-time train users gave PSOs almost universal approval, with 94 per cent agreeing PSOs are a good idea and 93 per cent stating they would seek their help if they felt unsafe.”

PSOs have issued more than 29,000 infringement notices since their introduction in February 2012.

More than 1700 of those infringements were for being drunk in a public place or being drunk and disorderly, 3500 were ticketing offences and more than 22,000 were transport offences.

POLICE are seeking witnesses to a number of break-ins in the Dandenong Ranges area over the past week.

Computer equipment was stolen from a residential property in Upwey between 3pm and 5pm on Wednesday 27 August.

Thieves took jewellery from a Tremont home on Monday 25 August between 8am and 5pm.

It is believed they entered the property through an unlocked door.

A Montrose chocolate shop was broken into overnight on Sunday 24 August, but it is believed nothing was stolen.

Jewellery, chainsaws and a Dingo digger were stolen from a Macclesfield property between Friday 22 and Wednesday 27 August.

It is not believed that they are linked, but anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

BELGRAVE South Football Club was broken into by unknown offenders between Thursday 21 and Tuesday 26 September.

Police said while liquor and food was stolen, the thieves made a lot of mess during the burglary.

Station under protection PROTECTIVE Services Officers began their nightly patrols at Upper Ferntree Gully Railway Station last Tuesday.

Upper Ferntree Gully was among five stations including Fawkner, Jewell, Hampton and Traralgon, that received PSOs last week.

The PSOs will patrol the Upper Ferntree Gully station from 6pm to the last train each night.

Liberal candidate for Monbulk Mark Verschuur joined Eastern Victoria Region MP Andrew Ronalds at the new PSOs’ induction.

“PSOs are helping to prevent anti-social behaviour, property damage, violence and alcohol and transport-related crime on our rail network,” Mr Verschuur said.

“Just as commuters using the 142 rail stations now with a PSO presence feel safer, those who use Upper Ferntree Gully station will also feel safer.”

IF IT takes a brute of a man to hit a woman, it takes a real man to stand up and say it is not OK. Police and community members came together on Tuesday to stand up against family violence as Minister for Crime Prevention Edward O’Donohue announced $10,000 for a Dandenong Ranges Music Council (DRMC) project that is taking a stand against the issue.

DRMC president Sue Clisby said the funding would allow local people to get involved in the safety message.

“To those who think music and family violence don’t go together, I say to them that we have the power to make a message stay in your head with a catchy tune,” she said. “We hope to use local people in the community and say that this kind of violence is not OK in Monbulk.”

She said that it was time for a road toll approach to the issue and that the DRMC could start getting the ball rolling locally.

Not only will the DRMC put a song together, but also a video and a blog.

“We want this message to spread, as well as be an interactive process,” she said. “Our aim is to launch the CD on White Ribbon Day which is 25 November, it’s a short time line but we really think it’s important.”

Mr O’Donohue said that family violence was a serious issue in the greater community and there were various ways to get the message across.

“It’s a scourge on our community,” he said.

“And it’s great to see such a strong community response to the issue.”

Coffee calls campaigners

The aroma of a McDonald’s coffee.

More than 30 anti-McDonald’s protesters made the journey to Eureka last Sunday for a chance to celebrate and reflect on their battle against the fast food giant.

But the need for a toilet stop and the aroma of the coffee beans was too strong for some, leaving many to enter the Golden Arches they strongly fought against for so long.

was invited to join them on their two-hour bus journey and found herself surrounded by a booing audience almost every time they passed a McDonald’s restaurant.

Their journey to Ballarat was to attend the Museum of Australian Democracy (MADE) where their long-fought battle was on exhibition.

Group spokesman Garry Muratore spoke to an audience about his group’s battle and vowed to continue the campaign until McDonald’s Tecoma was shut down.

He spoke to the Mail about the exhibition with pride.

“It is very significant to the campaign because it is a recognition of

the work that the community has done,” Mr Muratore said.

“We need to create a financial disaster for McDonald’s in Tecoma.”

The exhibition runs until 14 September.

Campaigner Richard Pearson said it was everyone’s Dandenong Ranges.

“It is just a reminder that for everything we have been through, it hasn’t all gone to waste,” Mr Pearson said.

“There isn’t a formal plan now but we will never stop until it is closed.”

Council calls the shots

By MARC MCGOWAN COUNCILLORS Noel Cliff and Samantha Dunn are set to meet with celebrity chef Shannon Bennett this week to get a clearer picture on his vision for Burnham Beeches.

Mr Bennett bought the property with investor Adam Garrisson four years ago and they plan to turn it into one of Victoria’s premier food and accommodation destinations.

But their decision to lodge a request for a Planning Scheme Amendment (PSA) with Planning Minister Matthew Guy continues to cause angst in the community.

Cr Cliff and Cr Dunn differed somewhat on the issue last week, when speaking about it with the Mail.

Cr Cliff, who has been in discussions with Mr Bennett and Mr Gar-

risson for about two years, said all planning decisions would be with Yarra Ranges Council.

He also said the public would have the chance to raise concerns once Burnham Beeches owners made further applications with council.

Cr Dunn hit back at Cr Cliff’s comments on her blog, saying Mr Guy would determine whether residents had that opportunity.

“It is up to the minister to decide if the community will be consulted, not councillors, not council officers, not Burnham Beeches owners,” Cr Dunn said.

“Unless the owners ask the minister to do so and, at any rate, it’s still the minister’s call.

“It is also up to the minister to determine if he makes a decision or

asks council for a decision on the PSA.” Cr Dunn did not return calls, but has spoken with Cr Cliff about the Burnham Beeches redevelopment.

“We’re good mates and she interprets it differently to what I do and that’s fine, but I’m sticking to what I said - we’re calling the shots,” Cr Cliff said in response to Cr Dunn.

“The minister could (overrule council) if he wants to call it in, but he won’t be.

“As it stands at the moment, we are the authority for dictating what happens there and that’s where my money lies.”

Cr Cliff said Mr Bennett might have believed he could overrule council by going to Mr Guy. “He would love to see something like that, where he has open slather,

but I guarantee you the government won’t give him open slather,” Cr Cliff said of Mr Bennett.

“It’s too prestigious a property and it’s got too high a value. It just can’t be given open slather to destroy something people value.

“That’s not just the locals - it’s right across the country. Everyone knows Burnham Beeches and the Nicholas family (which originally owned it), so it’s not going to happen.”

Cr Cliff said the meeting with Mr Bennett would “put to bed all the guessing that’s going on and the rumour mongers”.

Mr Guy said in a statement the planning department would work with the local council and relevant authorities to ensure a sensible outcome on this matter.

Declan heading into storm of ice

By MELISSA MEEHAN IT’S a craze that has swept the world, and now the ice bucket challenge has made its way to Emerald.

After seeing the local footy team take on the challenge, Emerald Primary School captain Declan Cocks decided he also wanted to do something to raise awareness for Motor Neurone Disease.

But doing the challenge wasn’t enough, Declan hoped to raise money for the cause by roping in his co-captain Jorja Hoffman to take up the challenge with him at

the school’s lunchtime.

Proud mum Jackie said Declan researched the illness before deciding to have the bucket of icy cold water thrown over him at lunchtime on Friday.

“He said because he’s the school captain he should do something to raise awareness,” she said.

“He did all the research and understands what it is all about.”

Lifeline for hub

By JESSE GRAHAM BELGRAVE’S new multi-purpose health hub project took a step forward last week with business plans endorsed and lobbying for funds to begin.

The hub, which will house Inspiro’s health services, was discussed at the Yarra Ranges Council’s 26 August meeting and received unanimous support from councillors.

Victoria Police Crime Prevention Officer and Inspiro board member Linda Hancock spoke at the meeting and said that, when completed, the hub could draw new services to the town.

Ms Hancock gave the example of Belgrave recently missing out on a new Headspace office and said the hub would be attractive for health service providers.

Quoting the council officer’s report on the new hub, councillor Samantha Dunn said existing buildings in Belgrave - which includes the Dandenong Ranges Emergency Relief Services (DRERS) and Inspiro - were not fit for their purposes.

“At the moment, we see emergency relief services provided out of sub-standard structures,” she said.

“We could do so much more, and we could do so much better.”

The report on the hub said that, when community consultation was run last year, an “overwhelming” amount of the 1085 respondents supported the development of the hub.

The hub will cost an estimated $8.7 million to construct and furnish and is believed it will operate at a deficit of about $244,290, increasing by CPI, for seven years.

Inspiro and the council will be covering any operating deficits on a 50/50 basis, according to the council report.

Before the project goes ahead, however, the council will be lobbying the state and federal governments for funding contributions.

Yarra Ranges Council Director of Social and Economic Development Ali Wastie said the council had promising conversations with government representatives about funding.

Councillors unanimously endorsed moving the project from the Future Community Projects Program to the 2014/2015 Capital Expenditure Budget.

Mansion fire threat I LIVE in the unique hamlet of Sherbrooke, with its population of 200. I don’t know anyone at all who objects to the restoration and revival of the beautiful Burnham Beeches mansion.

What is upsetting is the inappropriate size of the total development. As well as the mansion and currently operating bakery and cafe, future plans include a brewery, dairy, trufferie, steakhouse and open-air theatre. A village of 50 units and ecopods is also planned. There are only 76 dwellings in the whole of Sherbrooke!

With the guidance of the CFA, our community works hard to minimise the dangers of the bushfire season. Sherbrooke Road is our only access and egress but this road and its side streets are regularly blocked by fallen trees. Huge mountain ash across roads are simply part of the fabric of extreme weather situations.

The CFA advises everyone to be ‘off the mountain’ during days of high fire danger – before a fire starts, traffic bottlenecks and roads are blocked.

Many hills tourist businesses close on total fire ban days. Visitors shouldn’t be encouraged to put themselves at risk.

Burnham Beeches developers have applied to increase their patronage to 1700 – a threefold increase. With staff this number could reach 2000. This will increase our local residential population 10 times. No matter that this number won’t be reached every day. Any large increase will compromise everyone’s safety – residents and visitors alike.

With the onset of the bushfire season rapidly approaching, it is disappointing that the developers haven’t told us about their bushfire safety procedures.

We need to know.

Our local bushfire safety will hinge on this.

It’s a McFail SO AFTER picking up the girls from school this afternoon we happened to have the opportunity to view Tecoma McDonald’s latest FAILURE ... the playground advertising.

I asked the girls who they thought it was targeted at. Miss 12 immediately suggested children but Miss 10 instead offered this explanation: “I think they put it up to hide that they are

losers”. She then went on to pity the poor kids that might go there as they may become obese and get diabetes.

This is the next generation of hills children speaking...

McDonald’s may think that the current sprinkling of high school kids seeking to tap into free wi-fi will swell in years to come ... but once again we will prove greed doesn’t prosper when you attack the very people you hope to serve.

Personally I am incredibly offended by the playground advert and am wondering if it complies with regulations. McDonald’s had originally promised that the outlet would showcase ’local artists’. The generic cartoon crap they have plastered on the windows disrespects our artistic community (and Puffing Billy) just as their filthy branded litter disrespects our environment.

Not having entered the outlet myself I was under the impression that the playground has existed since opening anyway. This latest folly is pretty desperate.

McDonald’s will never share true figures with our community, just as they never supplied the ‘secret phone survey’ results we demanded at the mediation to prove their repeated declaration of local support.

My hope is that new CEO Andrew Gregory (exchief financial officer), will prove to be McDonald’s Australia’s first wise executive and close this PR disaster/money pit down.

What it doesn’t say THE front page (Mail, 26 August, “Tourism feast”) is a pure promotion piece for Shannon Bennett and his concept for the historic Burnham Beeches that doesn’t go into any of the associated problems.

There is: ■ No mention of his complaints about the council’s planning department, which was the reason he gave for taking the matter out of their hands and sending it straight to Minister Guy.

■ No mention of the huge number of vehicle movements that would be required along Sherbrooke Road in order to cater for 1700 visitors plus staff.

■ No mention of how those 2000 people (which is 10 times the current population of Sherbrooke) get evacuated along the narrow road in the event of a bushfire.

■ No mention of his proposed rebranding of the entrance to the adjacent, publicly-owned, Nicholas Gardens as, “Burnham Beeches”.

■ No mention of the word “arrogance” in ref-

erence to Mr Bennett’s activities, some of which are mentioned above.

Belgrave’s Dandenong Ranges Emergency Relief Service is in desperate need for donated coffee as they face increasing needs from those less fortnuate. Manager Tania Bevan said the service had now gone from opening three days a week, to a five-day service to cope with the increasing pressures of people in the area.

“Not everyone we deal with is homeless, some people just come in because they need social interaction, so being able to have a coffee is perfect,” she said.

“Last time we did a call-out in the Mail, the community really helped us out, and we’re almost at the end of using all of that, so would love to restock.”

Fagan features in tribute show

Tarzan makes a comeback

By ANEEKA SIMONIS AN Aussie Dire Straits tribute band will rock the Upwey-Belgrave RSL on Saturday 6 September for a concert of epic proportions.

The event, Bass Straits - Australian Dire Straits Show, will feature hills local Matthew Fagan as lead guitarist joined by three classic rock musicians who will cover some of the British band’s greatest ’80s hits, including Sultans of Swing, Money for Nothing, Romeo and Juliet and Calling Elvis to name a few.

Fagan is a fast growing name on a local, national and international scale, regularly performing solo guitar and ukulele shows around the world as well as recently directing the Emerald Ukulele Festival.

Recognised by celebrity talent such as Billy Connolly who called him “the best guest artist” he had ever toured with, audiences are sure to be wowed by him and the band’s coming performance in Upwey.

Kicking off from 8pm, classic rock vocalists and instrumentalists Kent Ross on keyboard/guitar, James Davies on drums and Chris Rourke on bass guitar will accompany Fagan for a night to relive some of the band’s former hits.

Top End artists descend on hills

By MARC MCGOWAN EIGHT artists from a remote Indigenous community will showcase their work and offer insight into their way of life at Burrinja Cultural Centre next month for the second straight year.

The exhibition, branded “A Pictorial Letter from Arlpwe at Ali Curung”, will run between 5 and 16 September, with an official opening on Sunday 14 September at 11am.

Arlpwe Arts Centre artists are visiting from Ali Curung, near Tennant Creek, for the duration of the exhibition and running workshops for community groups and schoolchildren.

The paintings on display represent both modern and traditional style and the artists are also bringing down unique artefacts, such as stone knives, spears and boomerangs.

Councillor Noel Cliff instigated the relationship between the two centres after discovering the work being done on a Northern Territory trip two years ago.

He said he was privileged to witness a local corroboree and got to know the 500-strong community through that experience.

“I saw their work and thought, ‘This is so good’ and I asked them, ‘How about coming to Melbourne for an exhibition, if we can get you to Burrinja?’,” Cr Cliff said.

“They were just over the moon about it and put a grant into the Northern Territory government through their art people and got the green light, so they came down last year.

“It was just fantastic and they got the schools to come in and spoke to the kids about their food, their artwork, what they make and brought loads of artefacts with them.”

The artists presented Burrinja Cultural Centre with a stone knife, which Cr Cliff described as “the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen”, in appreciation of their invitation.

AUSSIE rocker Shannon Noll is hitting the road and coming down to Lilydale for one night only, during his We Only Live Once tour.

Noll will take to the stage at the York on Lilydale on Saturday 20 September at 8pm, and he told the Mail that he was excited to return to the Yarra Ranges.

“I’m really looking forward to it, actually - it’s been a couple of years since I’ve played in Lilydale,” he said.

He said his set on the night would include some of his newest work, along with some of his classic songs and even a few unexpected covers.

Since emerging runner-up on the inaugural Australian Idol, Noll hit the airwaves frequently with his well-known cover of What About Me? Fast forward 11 years, and the musician said he had changed his style, veering away from his influences in Bryan Adams and Jimmy Barnes and towards more modern tastes.

“I intentionally tried to go with a more current sound for We only Live Once,” he said.

“I tried to evolve with it and come up with something pretty current.”

But Noll said his roots stayed as strong as ever, and his tour venues more often than not were more intimate spaces, such as the York on Lilydale.

“It’s great getting out there (Lilydale), and I love playing local venues,” he said.

“Every time I go there, it’s had a really good response.

“I’ve sort of made sure we’re straight back in there, and look

FIVE German students were given a taste of Australia as they spent time at Monbulk College last month.

While they were there, not only did they take part in local classes, but they also visited primary classes studying German at Mt Dandenong Primary School and Sassafras along with some of Monbulk’s year nine students.

“The Germans spoke about festivals in Germany and we all did a joint activity making Karneval masks,” teacher Shani Vander-Young said.

“I think this was great in building bonds between the German classes at our school and the primary schools.”

As part of celebrating the visiting German students the school also held a Bretzel Day at Monbulk College.

Bretzels are like huge pretzels and are a favourite fast food in Germany.

A German bakery Bretzel Biz made them fresh in the morning and delivered them to the school.

THE hills have welcomed their first official free book exchange library aimed at improving childhood literacy skills in the community.

Kallista Kindergarten opened the outdoor lending and learning hub on Monday 17 August after many months of planning and creative collaboration between children, parents and teachers.

The Little Free Library, located at the entrance of the kindergarten on Tom Roberts Road, is decorated in Dr Seuss style with roof tiles painted by 52 of the four-year-olds kindergarteners involved in the project.

“It’s created a real buzz in the kinder,” said Kallista Kindergarten’s Julie Konda.

But it’s not just these kids who will benefit from the free hub with the kindergarten opening its collection to all children in the local area to come and share their favourite stories.

“It’s a ‘take a book, leave a book’ gathering place where our community share their favourite literature and stories.

Anyone may stop by and pick up a book or two and bring back another book to share,” the library sign reads.

Ms Konda said sharing books in this way makes a fun experience out of reading and learning as well as building relationships at home.

“We hope the library will promote literacy as well as

In the spirit of welcoming other young learners, the children made colourful mosaic pavers which will lead up to the free library along the Kallista Village Green.

Awaiting council approval to lay the pavers, Ms Konda said the artistic trail will help engage the community as well as brighten the area.

“There is no public art in the Ranges despite it being an ar-

tistic place. When it’s dull and grey, it would be wonderful to have these pieces around,” she said.

The four-year-old kindergarteners designed their own mosaics which resembled their favourite storybook character with artist in residence Pauline Molenaar over one school term.

Yarra Ranges Council funded the project under its community arts grant awarded in 2012.

Woori wins see-saw battle YVMDFNL FINALS fever is well and truly alive in the Yarra Valley Mountain District “Community Bank” Football and Netball League. Woori Yallock defeated Upwey Tecoma and is set to take on Wandin next week. Seville dished it up to Yarra Glen and has booked a week’s break. Netball has Wandin taking on the Minor Premiers in Upwey Tecoma and Yarra Glen kept their undefeated record alive and look forward to a week’s break.

DIVISION 1 - SENIORS Woori Yalloc 12.13 (85) defeated Upwey Tecoma 12.4 (76) QUALIFYING FINAL WOORI Yallock have gone one step closer to going back to back as they triumphed over Upwey by nine points in what was a dire struggle all day.

Upwey had a good system working early as they opened up with a five goals-to-three first term and went to the first break with a 10-point lead.

Woori worked its way back into the game in the second and started to win the one-on-one contests and it paid dividends on the scoreboard as they booted five goals to one and went into half-time with a 16- point advantage. The third term was a complete reversal of the second as Upwey got the game back on their terms, they held Woori goalless for the quarter while they booted four majors and they went to the last break with a sevenpoint lead. The last quarter was a great battle but it was Woori that started to control the tempo of the game, they booted important goals when desperately required and ended with four majors for the term, Upwey did boot two goals but it was Woori’s steadiness and finals experience that saw them hold on to win by nine points in what was a fantastic final. Woori will now take on Wandin next week for a chance to go into The Grand Final while Upwey will get another chance in a knockout final against Mount Evelyn. Woori Yallock best players: B. This game started very evenly and went goal-for-goal for the first three quarters. Both teams never got the ascendancy and couldn’t break clear, and the margin was just four points at quarter time in favour of Monbulk, then just 1 point at half time still in Monbulk’s favour and then Mount Evelyn took the three quarter time lead after a five goalto-four third term and their advantage was nine points. The last quarter did belong to Mount Evelyn as the side was more efficient going forward and that proved the difference. It booted 5.2 for the quarter while Monbulk did have its opportunities but booted 2.7 which saw Mount Evelyn triumph and move into the First Semi Final against Upwey Tecoma in what should be a great battle next week. The third term was one to forget as both sides just couldn’t penetrate going forward and it was a goalless quarter and Warby held a 10-point lead at the final change. Yarra Glen actually got out to a 16 point lead at the first change and had held Seville to just 2 behinds and it looked like it was going to be Yarra Glen’s day but Seville clawed their way back into the contest in the 2nd quarter and got to within 8 points by half-time.

The 3rd quarter was a shocker for Yarra Glen as they just couldn’t get their hands on the ball and in fact didn’t even trouble the scoreboard, Seville had their chances to really put Yarra Glen away but was wasteful booting 2.6 but it was enough to take a 10 point lead into the last break. The last quarter yet again Yarra Glen couldn’t score a major and incredibly were held goalless in the entire 2nd half while Seville ran away with the

Upwey had a terrific first half with the highlight a 7 goal to 2 2nd quarter which saw them race to a 47 point half-time lead. Upwey continued their good form in the 2nd half as they kept extending their lead. They booted 4 goals to 1 in the 3rd and then finished the day with a 4 goal to 2 last quarter to win with ease come final siren. Upwey will now play Emerald in the knock out First Semi Final while Mount Evelyn will have to look forward to season 2015. Upwey Tecoma best players: S. Glazner (6 goals), T. McKern (2 goals), D. DIVISION 2 - UNDER 18 WOORI YALLOCK 10.7.67 defeated WANDIN 7.2.44 SECOND SEMI FINAL WOORI Yallock has booked a place in The Grand Final after a good 4 quarter performance over Wandin recording a 23 point win. Woori was way too strong in the first half as their running power proved the difference. They jumped out to a 27 point lead by half-time and looked pretty comfortable. The 2nd half was a tight contest but Woori was always in control and did what they had to do to win to go one step closer to the ultimate goal. Wandin is still alive and will play in The Preliminary Final against Yea next week.

YEA 7.16.58 defeated WARBURTON MILLGROVE 8.8.56 FIRST SEMI FINAL YEA has moved into The Preliminary Final after holding off a fast finishing Warby to win by just 2 points. Yea had the better structure for the major-

ity of the game and got out to a 22 point lead by 3 quarter time and looked like they were going to win reasonably easy however Warby had other ideas, they threw caution to the wind and took the game on, they started hitting the scoreboard and all of a sudden they were back in the contest. Yea had their chances to make sure of the win but they were wasteful booting 1.6 while Warby booted 5.2 but unfortunately for them time ran out which gave Yea a 2 point victory and moves them on to play Wandin in The Preliminary Final next week.

VETERANS GRAND FINAL WANDIN 8.15.63 defeated CROYDON NORTH 4.8.32 WANDIN has been the best team all year and has finished off the year with an undefeated record and The Premiership Cup after a 31 point Grand Final Victory over Croydon North. Wandin was in control for the majority of this game but Croydon did stay in touch and in fact got right back into the game in the 3rd quarter to trail by just 9 points going into the last quarter. Wandin weren’t playing to their absolute best but their defence in the last quarter was first class as they held Croydon scoreless while they booted 3.5 to claim The Premiership cup after a perfect undefeated season. Wandin best players: M. Ewart (1 goal), P. Rouget (1 goal), N. Fritsch (4 goals). Croydon North best players: R. McDonald, B. Aulich, M. Smiles.

DIVISION 1 - A GRADE WANDIN 45 defeated BELGRAVE 43 QUALIFYING FINAL THIS was what finals is all about, 2 teams giving everything and unfortunately someone has to be the loser. Belgrave held a 3 goal lead at half-time after a very even first half but then Wandin really got their game going in the 3rd quarter, they scored 15 goals to 8 to go to the last break with a 4 goal lead. The last quarter was a great contest, Belgrave threatened on a number of occasions but Wandin was able to just keep their noses in front and come the end of the game it was Wandin that was able to hold on to win by just 2 goals in what was an epic game. Wandin will now play Upwey in The Second Semi for the right to play off in the Grand Final while Belgrave get one more chance in the knock out First Semi against Mount Evelyn.

MOUNT EVELYN 48 defeated OLINDA FERNY CREEK 45 ELIMINATION FINAL MOUNT Evelyn is still alive in the finals race as they held on to win by 3 goals against Olinda which ended their finals campaign. Mount Evelyn did look the superior side early in this game and they did control the tempo in the first half as they went to half-time with a 9 goal advantage.

Olinda really took it up to Mount Evelyn in the 3rd scoring 15 goals to 12 and the margin was just 6 goals and Olinda was right back in this contest.

The last quarter Olinda once again came hard at Mount Evelyn and was finishing the stronger but Mount Evelyn was able to hold them off for long enough to record a 3 goal victory and move into the First Semi against Belgrave next week while Olinda’s campaign comes to an end. One point winners take it DIVISION 1 - A RESERVE QUALIFYING FINAL Mount Evelyn 34 d Emerald 33 THIS game was a bit all over the place with both sides looking the winner at various stages, Mount Evelyn got out to a five goal lead by half-time but Emerald hit back hard in the third term scoring 13 goals to two and all of a sudden it led the game by six goals.

The last quarter saw a reverse of the third as Mount Evelyn started getting its hands on the ball and were very clean with its disposal.

It shot 11 goals to four and amazingly took a one goal lead and victory which sees it book a place in the second semi final against Wandin next week while Emerald get one more chance with a clash against Healesville in the first semi.

Best Mount Evelyn: Susan Livesey, Victoria Starling, Elissa Dykstra (17).

Emerald: Morgan Jarrett, Meagan Baguley (23), Kate Griffin.

ELIMINATION FINAL Healesville 47 d Olinda Ferny Creek 36 A VERY consistent four quarter performance produced a good 11 goal victory to keep the finals campaign alive Healesville held a narrow twogoal lead at the first change and then stretched that out to seven goals by half-time with a 10 goal to five second term.

The second half was a good contest, Olinda certainly wasn’t playing a bad game but Healesville was able to score at critical moments to keep Olinda at arm’s length.

Healesville scored 22 second half goals to Olinda’s 18 to win by 11 goals in what was a good battle. Healesville will now play Emerald in another knock out final next week while Olinda’s season comes to a close.

DIVISION 1 - B GRADE QUALIFYING FINAL Wandin 25 d Mount Evelyn 19 THIS was a low scoring affair but it was Wandin that got out to a six-goal lead at the first change and was able to maintain that lead throughout.

The remainder of the game was a very tight contest but Mount Evelyn would be ruing its start as it just couldn’t make any in-roads on Wandin’s advantage.

Wandin held on to the win by six goals and booked a place in the second semi-final against Olinda Ferny Creek next week while Mount Evelyn gets another chance against Emerald in the knock-out first semi-final.

The second half, however, really did belong to Emerald as its ball movement was superior and it made the most of its chances shooting 20 second half goals to just six to dominate the second half and record a very good 13 goal victory.

Emerald now moves on to the first semi-final and will take on Mount Eve-

lyn in another knock-out game.

ELIMINATION FINAL Olinda Ferny Creek 36 d Belgrave 23 IT was a very good four-quarter performance from Olinda which had Belgrave’s measure for the majority of the game.

It got to a seven-goal lead at quarter time and then scored eight goals to three in the second to take a handy 12 goal lead into half-time.

The second half produced some good netball and it was an even contest but Olinda’s first half dominance proved the difference in the end as it ran out 13 goal victors. Olinda will now take on Emerald in the first semifinal next week while Belgrave will have to wait until season 2015 to have another crack at finals.
