Survival rates from sudden cardiac arrest where a defibrillator is not used is between 2 to 5 per cent, and that chance of survival reduces by 10 per cent for each minute that the heart problem continues.

VicForests Regional Engagement Manager Liz Langford said the organisation was happy to support the fire brigade with the grant.

“All of us live and work in this community and so do our contractors – we’re happy to do something that will be of a fantastic community organisation, such as the CFA,” she said.

Capt Clothier said that grants, community donating and fund-raising was important for the fire brigade to keep up-to-date and effective safety equipment.

“The brigade does fund-raise for additional equipment,” she said.

“So contributions we get from other organisations, in recognising the work we do and supporting us, is important to us.”

Ms Langford said that, while she was happy the machine was there for emergencies, she hoped there wouldn’t be a situation where it needed to be used.

“Primarily, it’s to look after the firefighters themselves,” she said.

“It’s recognising that it’s a demanding job that we do, and with car accidents and people in very stressful situations with house fires, you never really know when it’s going to be needed.”

Warburton firefighter Chris Nicholson said the defibrillator will be particularly useful when responding to events in remote areas.

“The areas we work in are already remote – having the portable defibrillator with us, it’s going to be helpful,” he said.

WARBURTON’S emergency services crews will be better equipped for serious incidents after receiving potentially life-saving new equipment.

The the town’s CFA received a HeartStart Defibrillator this month as a result of a $2000 grant from VicForests, and $1200 in community-raised funds.

It will be stored at Warburton Fire Station within the week.

Brigade Captain Hazel Clothier said the defibrillator will give crews peace of mind when attending incidents in remote areas or where victims are in cardiac arrest.

She said that the brigade wasted no time in getting the remaining funds together after receiving the VicForests grant.

“It’s one of those things where we decided – once you’ve got the idea to have a defibrillator, the best thing is to have it on the premises as soon as possible,” she said.

Though the machine will be available for community use in an emergency, and registered with Ambulance Victoria, Capt Clothier said the defibrillator will be taken by firefighters when responding to incidents.

She said that, in some extreme cases, firefighters may need to use the defibrillator on one another.

“They add so much colour and wildlife to the area. It would be sad without wattles to brighten the area,” she said.

WHAT is supposed to be a symbol of national pride is being culled by Yarra Ranges Council as they move to reduce wattle species in the area.

Hoddles Creek resident Peter Mauger lives on several acres that are filled with about 50 different wattle species which he believes are ecologically significant to the area.

“They provide a great habitat for seed eating birds and possums like to scratch the bark.

“Birds are already getting scarce in the area.

“We are going to continue losing them by denying wattles as a food source,” he said.

Mr Mauger said it was a shame the species, which is Australia’s national floral emblem, “is no longer a symbol of pride”, particularly given the all but forgotten National Wattle Day on 1 September. Though he understands some wattles are a weed species, Mr Mauger said that the local council “has not discriminated between poisoning weed species and non-weed species” when removing the plants.

Council Director of Environment and Engineering Mark Varmalis said the cull has been targeting certain wattle species which pose a danger to the environment.

“Some of these wattle species are becoming problematic outside their natural ranges, populating in bushland, roadsides and cleared land.

“Wattle species remain one of the highest threats to environmental assets in the Yarra Ranges,” Mr Varmalis said.

However Mr Mauger said this has not been the case on or around his property where he has lived for more than 35 years.

A NEW aquatics centre for the Yarra Valley is set to front council next week, and the council is preparing to lobby politicians for a helping hand.

The feasibility study on a new Yarra Valley Aquatics Centre was confirmed as an item for next week’s Yarra Ranges Council meeting by mayor Fiona McAllister.

The study, which has been compiled over the last two years, will explore the potential for a new pool and aquatics facilities to be based in the Healesville area.

Should the council endorse the feasibility study at the meeting, Cr McAllister said the project would then move to a consultation phase, where the public could comment.

Cr McAllister said the project would then be the subject of the council’s advocacy program, and that the state and federal governments would be asked to contribute funds.

“The funding requirements would be quite significant,” she said.

“We’ll be asking for millions.”

The feasibility study was expected to front council in around April, but was delayed due to extensive research and evaluation being carried out, according to the council.

The study is coinciding with a review of the Yarra Ranges Aquatic Strategy, which maps out the future of the shire’s pools.

It’s the response heard all too often by mothers, wives and friends of Aussie men when asked about their health.

It’s no secret that when it comes to admitting a health problem, men will often put on a brave face and avoid seeing their GP for conditions that worsen with time.

But groups across the Yarra Valley are working toward strategies that will break down this culture of male bravado.

The three local groups have formed a health survey for men in the area which will anonymously collect information to help develop targeted programs to tackle the is-

sue. Released ahead of Father’s Day on Sunday 7 September, the How’s Your Father survey will provide a foundation for what it hoped to be a monthly meeting for men to open a casual dialogue about often tough to talk about health issues affecting them.

“The long-term goal of the program will be to make it normal for men to discuss mental and physical health issues with their mates and families,” said Wandin Seville Community Bank chairman Jan Ockwell.

Bank comes to animals’ aid

By KATH GANNAWAY A $50,000 donation to Animal Aid will go a long way towards meeting some of the immediate needs that the Coldstream shelter is dealing with in the face of ageing infrastructure.

The Bendigo Bank presented the cheque to Animal Aid on Friday as part of the Give Them a Voice national campaign that was instigated by the Wandin Seville Community Bank Branch in 2012 and contributed to by the 13 Yarra Ranges branches.

Animal Aid CEO Mark Menze said he has a graveyard of old washing machines that have given their all to keep things a bit more comfortable for the hundreds of dogs and cats that are taken in each year and for the staff and volunteers who care for them.

“There’s a whole lot of washing involved here and we’re running on donated household top loaders,” he said citing just one example of why this donation is so welcome.

A heater blew up last week, plumbing needs attention and Mr Menze said volunteer drivers are doing their pick-ups and drop-offs in a 20-year-old van.

“Grants usually come attached to specific projects so for us to get this amount of money with no stipulations on what it has to be spent on, to put in the bank and use for some of these immediate projects we have on the books, is great,” he said.

Former Bendigo Bank Yarra Ranges Regional Manager Mark Nolan said the Wandin Seville branch had built and maintained a strong mutual relationship with Animal Aid.

“Hopefully they see us as a good friend from a banking perspective, as well as a good friend from a community perspective,” he said.

Animal Aid Board chairwoman Fran Bailey thanked the bank and said there was a great synergy between Bendigo Bank and Animal Aid as organisations that respond to needs in their communities.

She said its open door policy for lost, abandoned and abused animals meant Animal Aid didn’t turn any animal away.

“We have incredible success stories of animals that have been here for long times and been successfully rehomed.

“But that takes a lot of money so we are very grateful for cheques like this and the very valuable partnership we have with Bendigo Bank,” she said.

Restrictions on bushfire overlay eased

By JESSE GRAHAM CHANGES to the controversial Bushfire Management Overlay (BMO) have been praised for freeing up unworkable restrictions on landowners.

But Yarra Ranges Mayor Fiona McAllister said unanswered questions remain and that some residents may still be left tied up in red tape.

Planning Minister Matthew Guy gazetted the changes to the BMO in July, and the final changes have since been published.

Under the changes, private bushfire shelters and bunkers can now be constructed as a bushfire protection measure, which will lower Bushfire Attack Levels (BAL) - the risk posed by bushfire, depending on numerous factors.

Permit exemptions also exist in some cases, for landowners to build sheds or outbuildings.

Cr McAllister said these changes, and aligning BAL with Australian Building Standards would help landowners who were previously tied up by the overlay.

“It’s a really good step forward and really something we were asking for,” she said.

“Hopefully, that will mean that we will see an evolution in the way people are responding to fire risk and house design and construction - there’s real potential in that.”

Clearing vegetation under the ‘10/50’ rule - where all vegetation can be cleared within 10 metres of an existing house and all vegetation except trees can be cleared within 50 metres without a permit - still applies under the BMO. Vegetation clearance can take place on Neighbourhood Residential Zone, General Residential Zones, Residential Growth Zones, Urban Growth Zones, Low Density Residential Zones, Township Zones, Rural Living Zones, Rural Activity Zones and Farming Zones without a separate planning permit.

However, Cr McAllister said that the vegetation clearance without a permit doesn’t apply to Rural Conservation Zones, which cover much of the Ryrie

Ward and areas throughout the Yarra Ranges.

She said in many zones, the BMO overrides any zoning - making vegetation clearance easier - but not in Rural Conservation Zones.

“In some instances, it looks like it could require a lot of vegetation removal, which is problematic in terms of trying to get a permit,” she said.

“That tension between vegetation removal and meeting BMO requirements still exists in some zones.”

She said that, despite some concerns, the changes were a sign that Mr Guy had listened to the community feedback on the BMO. Cr McAllister said that it was early days for the BMO changes and that once applications begin to come in it will be easier to see how the changes affect the area.

“Yarra Ranges Council hasn’t written to the minister, responding to it (the changes),” she said.

“I will be raising these issues with my fellow councillors and, hopefully, we can let the minister know our views on it as well.”

What they’ve discovered as their plans to ride on Piaggio Typhoon 50cc scooters across the Nullarbor have taken shape is a shared quest for adventure and a commitment to helping raise the profile of mental health issues through Beyondblue.

The group, Perry Carter from Launching Place, Bob Gannaway and Jock Purves from Healesville and friends Dr Felicity Nolle from Chirnside Park and Diane Roberts from Yarra Glen, leave this week for an adventure that none of them had earmarked as bucket list material.

“Everybody has knowledge of it and if they don’t have it themselves, they certainly know someone not too far away who is suffering from a mental illness, or who has,” he said.

He agrees with Mr Jacobsen’s comments on older Australian’s as well, saying they have the ability to have enormous input into all aspects of life.

“Experience and wisdom are attributes you don’t get with younger people, that comes with age,” he said.

Letters IT HAS been said that, in the lead-up to an election a ‘pollie’ will open a letter in public if there is a possibility of a news photographer being present for the opening. Why was I not surprised then to find a picture of on the front page of the Mail showing our local member opening a new map of the Powelltown walking tracks?

These historic tracks have been used for generations and the Forestry guys have been protecting and maintaining them for years.

They are the people who should be garnering plaudits for the current ‘opening’.

What I would rather see is Brad Battin (who has been uncharacteristically quiet for some time) opening the reticulated gas service to Warburton.

It was he who loudly promised that this service would be delivered by the government during the current term of this parliament.

We surely all remember the big sign in Warburton assuring us of this promise.

This government seems to have developed into an art form the business of not keeping election promises.

In three different places I’ve lived in the valley, including my present address, I’ve found blue wrens and parrots ripped to pieces by local cats and also had to put up with yowling in the middle of the night and my garden beds being used as cat toilets.

I don’t understand why the shire repealed its original ground-breaking by-law in the first place: my recollection is that it was the first in the world when it was introduced in the ’80s, just after I’d moved to the mountains from the suburbs with two cats. I was concerned they

Cat-astrophe TO ALL pet owners, I have refrained from comment on the current cat laws mainly because I was raised in the belief of live and let live, however after recent events and a huge influx of inconsiderate and irresponsible cat owners arriving in our area I feel I can no longer restrain myself.

Firstly to the lady in Millgrove that says her cat is afraid of birds and doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t kill, fair enough we will give you the benefit of the doubt, however the fact that you acknowledge your cat defecates in other peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s yards and buries it is a good enough reason for you to restrain or contain your pet as your neighbours, who like me donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t probably own a cat shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to have the horrible experience of putting a hand in your catâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s carefully hidden poo as we weed our gardens. Your comments on the house fires smoking up the neighbourhood and such show that your whole letter and belief that cats should be able to wander as they like killing and defecating where they like is poorly thought out and irrational. Next time you leap to the defence of cats, consider this - 35 years ago when I was a child growing up in this area we had an abundance of bandicoots, native water rats, even the occasional quoll, not to mention other native marsupials and birdlife.

Since the influx of cats, both pets and feral (check with parks for the estimates of feral cats in Australia) in the valley our native wildlife has declined dramatically almost to the point where creatures that were common 35 years ago are rarely seen if they are seen at all.

of people claiming to be animal lovers only to let their cats run wild, killing indiscriminately and personally feel they are the ultimate hypocrites and need to take a good look at themselves.

I feel that if I have to register, neuter and put up fences good enough to restrain my dogs so there is no chance of escape, then fair is fair lock up your cats. I for one will have no problem trapping cats that defecate, kill in my yard or rest on the bonnet of my car putting numerous scratches on it in the process and hand them over to the ranger. Hopefully the resulting fines will cause more people to do the right thing, or at least keep from making inane and silly comments that only inflame people who do the right thing.

Secondly, I can understand the temptation to allow your dogs/pets off the lead on the walking track. If you do, however, donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t complain when you get told off by someone doing the right thing by keeping their dogs on the lead. My partner and I were walking our four-month-old pup on the rail trail trying to train him to lead when low and behold an Aussie Shepherd, its owner a good 200 metres away comes for a visit, despite our telling it to go away it proceeded to come and in a friendly way harass our pup.

Now this didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t turn out too badly but if it had been a different dog and it had gone nasty a simple sorry wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have sufficed. Train your animal and make sure you can control it before you take it out and for Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sake keep it on the lead or at least put it back on its lead when you see other people coming with their animals and life will be a lot easier.

Lastly to the lady who deliberately allows her dog to leave deposits on our front nature strip and lawn, please stop or at least have the decency to pick up your dogâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s deposits as our house is not for sale and very soon I will be returning the deposits to their rightful owner.

I will finish by saying that I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t dislike cats and dogs, just their irresponsible and lazy delusional owners, so come on people clean your acts up and do the right thing for the sake of our ever-diminishing native wildlife restrain your pets.

Millgrove - Old Identity Passes On AFTER several weeks in hospital, Mr John William Walker, a well-known resident of Millgrove for many years, passed away at Warburton of Tuesday night, at the age of 74.

Mr Walker was married in the Millgrove Methodist Church in 1917. He came from Whittlesea some years before and has worked in the bush all his life.

As a young man he lost a leg in an accident in the bush. His courage never faltered and he lived a fairly active life, raising a family of four sons and a daughter.

Cancer retreat is closer

By JESSE GRAHAM A RETREAT for kids with cancer in Healesville is one step closer to completion, with unanimous support at last week’s council meeting.

Yarra Ranges councillors voted unanimously last week in support of a planning scheme amendment request for a cancer care retreat in Healesville.

The retreat is proposed for 25 Maroondah Parade, but requires a planning scheme amendment before an application is allowed, as it is based on Green Wedge land.

After supporting the request, the council will be writing to Planning Minister, Matthew Guy, to organise a site-specific amendment to the Yarra Ranges Planning Scheme, which will allow an application to be considered in future.

“It was a bit overwhelming, actually,” he said.

“At this stage, we’re on the right path. What we’re doing is hopefully going to be really worthwhile.”

Mr Timms spoke to the councillors about his vision for the retreat, which would provide a getaway for families of children affected by cancer.

The land was purchased in 2013, and the retreat will provide accommodation for two families, a common kitchen, dining and lounge area and a caretaker’s residence.

The purpose of the retreat would be to offer respite and a chance to “get away from the day-to-day grind”, and would be free of charge.

He said that he and his wife Belinda started the foundation (also known as Team Nick), after their 21-month-old son died from a rare form of cancer.

“We’re hoping the community will get right behind us,” Mr Timms said.

A council officer’s report on the amendment request said the retreat, when completed, would offer significant positive social and economic impacts to the Healesville community.

The report said the proposal had no significant environmental impacts, but that environmental issues would be explored fully in a future planning permit application.

Councillors unanimously supported the amendment proposal, and Yarra Ranges Mayor Fiona McAllister called it an “incredibly valuable and wonderful use” for the site.

“It’s right on the edge of residential areas, and it’s not encroaching significantly into any Green Wedge areas,” she said.

“As Ryrie Ward councillor, I think the community would be very supportive of it.”

Pre-school goes high-tech

By MELISSA MEEHAN TWO Yarra Valley kindergartens are set to benefit from IT upgrades, thanks to new grants from the State Government.

Minister for Children and Early Childhood Development Wendy Lovell and Seymour MP Cindy McLeish visited the Yarra Glen Pre-school to announce the funding on Wednesday.

Yarra Glen Pre-school and Upper Yarra Community House will both receive $1500 that will provide them with

upgrades to their administration system and a new laptop, respectively.

“This small round of funding makes it possible to reward the hard work of committees and communities at local preschools,” Ms Lovell said.

“It’s important that they are able to offer state of the art services because early childhood education is one of the most important steps in setting children on the right path.”

Preschool parents’ committee president Kelly Coghlan said the funding would be a

great help to the pre-school.

“We do really rely on fundraising and the generosity of parents and members of the community,” she said.

“And in these extremely tough times for some families funding like this really helps us, and I guess, acknowledges the work of volunteers that keep the wheels turning.”

Ms McLeish said that local centres in the Yarra Ranges were among 643 Victoria preschools and children’s centres that would benefit from the grants.

Driving safety home SAFETY in driveways has remained the key focus of the Elmo Stays Safe Campaign which had its second instalment launched last week.

The Elmo Stays Safe Campaign was announced in 2013 with the second part broadcasted last week which will feature Sesame Street stars Elmo and Maria.

The road safety campaign was launched by Assistant Treasurer Gordon Rich-Phillips last Tuesday as part of the Victorian Coalition government initiative to build a safer Victoria.

Mr Rich-Phillips said the danger of children playing in driveways is key issue that must be addressed at a young age.

“It’s vital that children are taught about road safety from a young age, especially how to play safely around driveways,” Mr Rich-Phillips said.

The campaign was first designed by Kidsafe Victoria in collaboration with Sesame Workshop and has the backing of both TAC and RACV. The leaders in the campaign have now introduced an app which features Sesame Street’s Elmo and Maria, which aims to raise awareness among parents of the dangers present in driveways and around the streets.

Important safety messages have been incorporated into the activity-based tablet/smartphone app, a 30-second radio community service announcement and an A4 storybook.

Mr Rich-Phillips said parents must ensure their children know that driveways aren’t a safe place to play.

“Parents and caregivers can help children from a young age to develop good road safety practices so that they learn to make safe choices as they grow into independent road users,” he said.

“It’s vital that young children are aware of the dangers and can play safely around the home and in the community.”

Kidsafe Victoria president Erica Edmands said a child’s unpredictable nature can make them more vulnerable.

“It is important as adults that we always 'supervise, separate and see’ to help keep children safe in areas such as driveways,” Ms Edmands said.

The Elmo Stays Safe campaign will contribute to an international effort aimed at reducing child injury and death as part of the UN Global Decade of Action for Road Safety.

“This latest initiative is another way that the Victorian Coalition government is putting children’s safety first,” Mr Rich-Phillips said.

“It follows recent announcements by the Napthine government that those who leave children unattended in cars will face double the existing jail time and significantly increased fines.”

Cutting edge study A CUTTING-EDGE study into serious injury crashes in Victoria will examine more than 400 collisions.

The State Government unveiled a world-first study into the causes of serious injury crashes.

Over the next three years, the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) will spend $8 million on the Enhanced Crash Investigation Study (ECIS) as part of its strategy to reduce road trauma by 30 per cent by 2022.

Minister for Roads Terry Mulder said by shifting the focus to serious injury, there was more to be learned.

“We can’t be satisfied with our achievements to date when we still have a situation where close to 6000 Victorians are hospitalised due to transport accidents each year” he said.

Assistant Treasurer Gordon Rich-Phillips said the findings would guide the State Government’s efforts to prevent accidents and reduce the cost of crash-related serious injuries to the community.

“We have made real progress in reducing the road toll in recent years and the ECIS is the next step in continuing to drive down fatalities and serious injuries” he said.

Researchers from Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC) will examine about 5000 individual pieces of information relating to each crash, with support from an international team of experts.

“This study will help give us a level of understanding of the science and the human factors involved in serious injury collisions that we’ve never had before” he said.

“This understanding will then inform our decisions about where best to invest money to save lives and prevent injuries”

Top skaters to compete

By JESSE GRAHAM MOUNT Donna Buang will be a hub of skating, sliding and speed later this year, when an Australian championship for skateboarding comes to the summit.

The Victorian Skateboarding Association’s Yarra Ranges Downhill Festival will be held on Mount Donna Buang in Warburton on 16 November, moving from its regular spot in Baynes Road, Monbulk.

With a track three times the length of Monbulk’s one kilometre road, this year’s event will double as the Australian championships for downhill skating, and state representatives will be competing in races.

Racers will make their way down Donna Buang Road three kilometres from the summit, to the Ten Mile car park, and are expected to reach speeds of up to 85 kilometres per hour.

President of the Victorian Skateboarding Association, Bernard Griffiths, said the main attraction would be an elimination race, and that the festival would run through the morning until around 4pm.

Mr Griffiths said that safety would be at the forefront of the event, with the road closed off, and participants wearing full motorcycle helmets and leathers while racing.

“It is a bit of an extreme sport,

to stay on a skateboard at that speed without wobbling or flying off - they have to be at peak fitness to do that,” he said.

“It’s a good course, both because we can get all the traffic off and manage the safety properly.

“It’s good we’re able to deliver a strong road safety message.”

The group celebrated its sixth birthday on 6 August, and choir leader Leah Marlowe said the members were only looking at the road ahead.

She said the choir, which was composed of around 50 members, was for all walks of life, all backgrounds and all singing skill levels.

“It’s a very, very caring, warm and supportive group,” Ms Marlowe said.

“For some people, they come purely for the singing, while many come for the social interaction and an afternoon out.”

By ANEEKA SIMONIS IMPROVEMENTS to personalised care and residential rehabilitation services for youth are set to improve in the Yarra Ranges as the State Coalition Government rolls out changes to local healthcare delivery.

As part of the government’s $74 million investment in mental health, three providers in the outer eastern suburbs will share in the funding to improve client access to

suitable care.

Minister for Mental Health Mary Wooldridge said mental health providers EACH, Neami and the Uniting Church received the state funding at the start of last month and are actively working on improving their care programs.

“These changes have been made so that our mental health system better enables adults and young people with mental illness to live independently, maintain the best possible social and emotional

well-being and live satisfying lives in the community, regardless of where they live,” Ms Wooldridge said.

EACH CEO Peter Ruzyla said the mental health reform provided more choice for people in east regional areas.

“In the past, EACH was almost the only provider of psychiatric care in the upper east. Now the area is serviced by two organisations, EACH and Neami which introduces more choice.

“We also now have the opportunity to revisit individual preferences across the range,” Mr Ruzyla said of the funding’s capability to provide tailored support.

EACH put together a submission to improve residential rehabilitation services for young people which was welcomed by the recommissioning of funds.

Ms Wooldridge said since coming into government, Coalition funding for the mental health sector had increased by 30 per cent.

When art takes over the weekend run workshops, and are generally adding another feather to the Yarra Valley’s tourism hat,” she said.

She thanked Oakridge Wines owners Ilana Atlas and Tony D’Aloisio, who she said had entrusted their brand-new building to the exhibition, along with Yarra Ranges Council and Bendigo Community Bank for their ongoing sponsorship support.

Visitors to the group exhibition will get a taste of the diverse spectrum of artists, and art media covered in Open Studios with individual pieces including glass and ceramics to textiles, conceptual art, watercolours, photography, jewellery, mosaics, paintings ... and other forms.

The group exhibition is open daily until 14 September.

A second exhibition,‘Prelim’, is running at The Memo in Healesville until 17 September and the Open Studios weekend is 13 and 14 September.

“I made a rookie mistake as a first-time visitor last year in thinking I could get to all the artists’ studios in one day. This year, I’ll be spending the whole weekend in the valley,” she said to a packed audience at Oakridge Wines, major sponsor hosting the group exhibition.

Ms Warne, a businesswoman and digital media specialist, described the event which will see more than 40 artists opening their studios across the Yarra Valley on 13 and 14 September, as a tangible experience of art.

“It is all the senses that get touched when you are allowed into these wonderful places,” she said.

“You, the artists, allow people to have that unique, amazing experience.”

Pussies: don’t fear the curfew

By JESSE GRAHAM CAT owners need not fear the looming curfew, and the majority of owners won’t notice the change, according to Yarra Ranges Mayor Fiona McAllister.

The Yarra Ranges Council’s cat curfew will come into effect as of Wednesday, 1 October, and stipulates that cats must be kept on their owner’s property at all times.

Since endorsing the cat curfew in March, the council has received a strong backlash on social media from residents who disagree with the curfew.

However, Cr McAllister said that the “significant majority” of cat owners in the shire would not notice the curfew at all.

“Once it comes in, people will realise that, unless we’re talking about a nuisance cat, it won’t have any impact,” she said.

Cr McAllister said the curfew filled a gap in local laws, and that there was currently no policy outlining how the council would deal with cats that trespass on other properties or kill native wildlife.

At last week’s Yarra Ranges Council meeting, three letters from members of the public were answered by Director of Planning, Building and Health, Andrew Paxton.

The three submitters questioned the legitimacy of the curfew, expressed displeasure with speaking to council officers or asked how cats could be expected to be kept within fencelines.

Mr Paxton said a council officer was responding to inquiries about the curfew, and that the council would not be actively patrolling for runaway cats.

A fact-sheet on the curfew and a copy of a letter sent to registered cat owners in the Yarra Ranges can be found on the council’s website at yarraranges.vic.gov.au.

COCONUT milk, almond milk, rice milk; there are so many options for milk replacements in your diet - really, it was only a matter of time before camel milk hit the shelves.

WA business, Australian Camel Dairies, has brought the new product to Australia.

Already popular throughout Europe, it could be the latest cash cow for WA at a tidy $20 per litre.

With an estimated 750,000 feral camels roaming the Australian desert, using the animals for milking may be a feasible solution to culling.

The health conscious claim camel milk is high in nutrients and many link the drink to helping a range of disorders including diabetes, autism, digestive problems and food allergies.

Camel milk has been drunk through arid and semi-arid regions since as early as 3000BC, according to a report from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation, which said the use of camels for milk was vital to the nourishment of people living in these areas.

A 2006 report from the same organisation said camel milk, although slightly saltier than cows’ milk, was good for us.

“After all, nature designed it to help baby camels grow up in some of the world’s roughest environments - deserts and

steppes. That helps explain why it is three times as rich in Vitamin C as cows’ milk,” the report said.

Camel milk does come with a warning - it is not pasteurised

and can therefore contain nasty bacteria.

But for many, from the health conscious to the lactose intolerant, camel milk is the next best thing.

Woori Yallock defeated Upwey Tecoma and is set to take on Wandin next week. Seville dished it up to Yarra Glen and has booked a week’s break. Netball has Wandin taking on the minor premiers in Upwey Tecoma and Yarra Glen kept their undefeated record alive and look forward to a week’s break.

DIVISION 1 - SENIORS QUALIFYING FINAL Woori Yallock 12.13 (85) d Upwey Tecoma 12.4 (76) WOORI Yallock have gone one step closer to going back to back as they triumphed over Upwey by nine points in what was a dire struggle all day. Upwey had a good system working early as they opened up with a five goalsto-three first term and went to the first break with a 10-point lead. Woori worked its way back into the game in the second and started to win the oneon-one contests and it paid dividends on the scoreboard as they booted five goals to one and went into half-time with a 16- point advantage. The third term was a complete reversal of the second as Upwey got the game back on their terms, they held Woori goalless for the quarter while they booted four majors and they went to the last break with a seven-point lead. The last quarter was a great battle but it was Woori that started to control the tempo of the game, they booted important goals when desperately required and ended with four majors for the term, Upwey did boot two goals but it was Woori’s steadiness and finals experience that saw them hold on to win by nine points in what was a fantastic final. DIVISION 2 - RESERVES SECOND SEMI FINAL Seville 9.12 (66) d Yarra Glen 4.6 (30) SEVILLE has inflicted Yarra Glen’s first loss of the year and what a great time to do it as it secures a Grand Final berth for them. Yarra Glen actually got out to a 16 point lead at the first change and had held Seville to just 2 behinds and it looked like it was going to be Yarra Glen’s day but Seville clawed their way back into the contest in the 2nd quarter and got to within 8 points by half-time. The 3rd quarter was a shocker for Yarra Glen as they just couldn’t get their hands on the ball and in fact didn’t even trouble the scoreboard, Seville had their chances to really put Yarra Glen away but was wasteful booting 2.6 but it was enough to take a 10 point lead into the last break. The last quarter yet again Yarra Glen couldn’t score a major and incredibly were held goalless in the entire 2nd half while Seville ran away with the game booting 4 last quarter goals to win by a very impressive 6 goals. FIRST SEMI FINAL Alexandra 17.9 (111) d Yea 2.8 (20) ALEXANDRA was completely dominant from start to finish and really did have this game wrapped up at quarter time as they held Yea to 1 point while they booted 5.3. Alex held Yea to just 2 points in the 2nd term and shot out to a 51 point lead by half-time. The 2nd half was really more of the same but at least Yea did manage 2 majors but Alex was still dominant adding another 9 goals to win big come final siren.

Consistent campaigners DIVISION 1 - A RESERVE ELIMINATION FINAL Healesville 47 d Olinda Ferny Creek 36 A VERY consistent four-quarter performance produced a good 11-goal victory to keep the finals campaign alive Healesville held a narrow twogoal lead at the first change and then stretched that out to seven goals by half-time with a 10 goal to five second term.

The second half was a good contest, Olinda certainly wasn’t playing a bad game but Healesville was able to score at critical moments to keep Olinda at arm’s length.

Healesville scored 22 second half goals to Olinda’s 18 to win by 11 goals in what was a good battle. Healesville will now play Emerald in another knock out final next week while Olinda’s season comes to a close.

DIVISION 1 - B GRADE QUALIFYING FINAL Wandin 25 d Mount Evelyn 19 THIS was a low scoring affair but it was Wandin that got out to a six-goal lead at the first change and was able to maintain that lead throughout.

The remainder of the game was a very tight contest but Mount Evelyn would be ruing its start as it just couldn’t make any in-roads on Wandin’s advantage.

Wandin held on to the win by six goals and booked a place in the second semi-final against Olinda Ferny Creek next week while Mount Evelyn gets another chance against Emerald in the knock-out first semi-final.

ELIMINATION FINAL Emerald 30 d Warburton Millgrove 17 THIS game went goal for goal in the first half and it looked as though it was going to go down to the wire with Warby leading by just one goal.

The second half, however, really did belong to Emerald as its ball movement was superior and it made the most of its chances shooting 20 second half goals to just six to dominate the second half and record a very good 13 goal victory.

Emerald now moves on to the first semi-final and will take on Mount Evelyn in another knock-out game.

It may have only scored nine goals for the term but it held Emerald to just one to set the tone for the game.

The remainder of the game was a reasonable clash but Wandin always had the answers when required and come the end of the game they had a winning margin of 14 goals in what was a very good victory.

It will now play Warburton Millgrove in the second semi-final for a chance to book a place in the grand final while Emerald is still alive as it takes on Olinda Ferny Creek in the second semi-final.

DIVISION 2 - A GRADE SECOND SEMI FINAL Yarra Glen 36 d Seville 35 IT was a brilliant game that went down to the wire and if these combatants are to meet again in the grand final then there will be a hell of a ride.

This battle went goal for goal throughout with both teams’ defences standing strong.

The biggest lead at any change was just two goals and that went the way of Yarra Glen at three-quarter time.

The last quarter was what finals are all about as the girls looked spent but they battled it out with the winner in doubt for the entire term.

Come the end of the game it was Yarra Glen that was lucky enough to have its noses in front by the narrowest of margins which books it a spot in the grand final.

Seville gets another crack next week against Yea in the preliminary final.

FIRST SEMI FINAL Yea 46 d Yarra Junction 41 Yea moves one step closer to the grand final with a very good five goal win over Yarra Junction.

Yea started the stronger and jumped to a six-goal lead at the first change.

The remainder of the game was a very even contest and Yarra Junction did threaten at times but Yea was strong enough to squash any challenge and was able to hold on to its lead right to the end to book a place in the preliminary final against Seville with the winner to take on Yarra Glen in the grand final one week later.

DIVISION 2 - A RESERVE SECOND SEMI FINAL Seville 37 d Yea 34 SEVILLE is into the grand final after a very hard fought three-goal win over Yea. Seville actually looked a little flat early as Yea got out to a four-goal lead at the first break but Seville managed to match it with Yea in the second quarter and although it didn’t make inroads on the deficit, it was starting to get the game back on its terms.

The third term saw Seville get its game up and going as it scored 11 goals and held Yea to just three to go into the third quarter time with a four goal lead.

The last quarter went goal for goal but it was Seville that was able to steady when required to hold to record a three-goal victory.

Yea has one more chance as it will take on Yarra Glen in the preliminary final next week.

FIRST SEMI FINAL Yarra Glen 36 defeated Powelltown 29 YARRA Glen shot out of the blocks and raced to a 10-goal lead at the first change with a 14 goal to four opening term.

It then backed that up with an 11 to four goal second term and had raced to a 17-goal half-time lead.

The second half did see Powelltown become more competitive and

it did, in fact, outscore Yarra Glen in both the third and fourth quarters but it couldn’t haul the deficit in far enough to be any real threat as Yarra Glen did run out reasonably comfortable seven goal winners.

Yarra Glen will now take on Yea in next week’s preliminary final with the winner getting the right to play off in the grand final against Seville.

The first half of this match was a very tight struggle, there wasn’t a lot of scoring but Yarra Glen was able to get the lead by half-time, albeit by just one goal.

The third term is where Yarra Glen got the game in its control as its defence stood tall allowing Yea just one goal while Yarra Glen shot seven to take a handy five goal lead into the last term.

Yarra Glen finished the stronger with another seven-goal term while Yea did manage five goals but it was clearly Yarra Glen that was the better team and deserved its win.

Yea lives to fight another day when it takes on Seville in next week’s preliminary final.

Seville broke the game open in the third as it was more precise with its ball movement.

It shot 11 goals to four to jump to a 10-goal three-quarter time lead.

The last quarter opened up a bit and goals came a bit easier but Kinglake was too far in arrears to be a threat as Seville recorded an eight-goal victory and will now play Yea in the elimination final next week for the right to play off against Yarra Glen in the grand final.

Motoring Kluger’s out of the box

By EWAN KENNEDY TOYOTA Kluger is aimed at the large station wagon buyer, at those wanting a spacious people mover, but who also like the image provided by the shape of a 4WD vehicle.

This Toyota is big and bold in the American manner, so probably not a vehicle for the conservative buyer.

The latest Kluger was introduced to Australia in March this year and is longer and wider than before with a strong emphasis on maximising interior space.

Even the rear suspension components feature a new design that keeps them low and compact.

The all-new Toyota Kluger is intended chiefly for the American market, hence its bold shape. Indeed, it’s actually made in the US of A. It was introduced to Australia in March this year and has a tall front with an oversized grille, large guards, and a deep swage down the sides.

The body is unashamedly boxy to maximise space inside.

The tail isn’t as squared off as some in this market arena, the rear lights have a protruding horizontal shape that adds to the bold look.

The tailgate is almost a two-piece unit in that it has the convenience of opening rear glass.

The ‘gate is hinged at the top, which most owners find more convenient than a side-hinged rear door.

Inside, the instrument and centre panels occupy virtually a single widespread area.

This is a sensible idea, also found in the likes of the all-new Mercedes-Benz S-Class, so it looks to be the way of the future.

Toyota’s 3.5-litre twin-cam petrol V6 has been carried over from the old model Kluger but has been heavily revised to reduce emissions and trim fuel consumption.

It produces up to 201 kilowatts of power and 337 Newton metres of torque.

Sadly, there’s no turbo-diesel option because the Americans aren’t keen on diesels in their smaller (yes, smaller!) SUVs. The V6 engine is now mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, replacing the ageing five-speed unit in the superseded Kluger.

Kluger is offered in 2WD, to the front wheels, or all-wheel-drive (AWD) if you want to get a bit more adventurous and explore mild off-road areas.

Indeed, it may not just be aimed at station wagon buyers, Toyota tells us the sales split between 2WD and 4WD in the previous models was about 50/50 and the importer expects this ratio to continue.

Experience tells us few will use their Klugers on unsealed surfaces, but the dream is there - and who can argue against dreams?

Even the entry level Kluger has a reversing camera, rear parking sensors, seven airbags, daytime running lights, stability and traction control, ABS brakes with brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution.

The topline Kluger Grande that we

reviewed also has a pre-collision safety system and lane departure alert.

The front seats are large and comfortable, the second row seats have excellent legroom and headroom.

Access to the rearmost seats is relatively easy as the second row seats slide forward.

This is a tall vehicle and the climb into these rearmost seats may be hard work for some.

The cabin can take seven adults, though five, with two children in the rear will be a more practical load.

Boot space is very good, and all seats can be folded flat. The second and third row seats each have 60/40 splits.

Ride comfort is good and noise, vibration and harshness levels are well damped.

Handling is safe and predictable and there was considerable Australian

testing from the early design stages.

You certainly wouldn’t describe it as sporting, that’s not a criticism, but we can’t see many buyers of BMW X5 and the like putting the Toyota on their shortlist.

What Toyota Kluger has always been is an excellent long distance cruiser.

Around town it can be a bit of a handful at times due to its sheer bulk.

The rearview camera and reasonably slim roof pillars do make life easier.

Engine performance is good without being outstanding.

The new automatic is excellent in the way it works with the engine torque to get the best from it.

Fuel consumption isn’t overly high for the class, but this is certainly no economy special. Around town you’re likely to see number in the 12 to 16

litres per 100 kilometres most of the time.

The new six-speed auto helps on the highway and it’s not difficult to get the big Toyota under 10 litres per 100 with moderate driving.

Toyota Kluger is a large comfortable station wagon that will usually be used only as a people carrier.

Having the option to take the allwheel-drive versions into mild off-road areas will attract adventurous family buyers.
