■ Garbage trucks grounded after one collides with three vehicles...
Bins piling up By BRIDGET SCOTT CARDINIA Shire residents have kicked up a stink following the removal of a number of garbage trucks from its roads. A fatal accident in Adelaide involving one of Cleanaway’s trucks forced the company to ground all vehicles for safety checks. Two people were killed, and two others injured when the garbage collection truck collided with three cars. The driver of the truck was among those critically injured. Cardinia Shire was affected by the

removal of trucks, with garbage collection pushed back. Cleanaway released a statement following the incident in Glen Osmond, South Australia. The day after the event, Transpacific CEO Robert Boucher said Cleanaway was working closely with South Australia Police. “In the last 24 hours, we have been working closely with the South Australian Police and authorities to assist in their investigations,” he said. He said the company decided to remove all trucks due to safety precautions. “We have taken the decision this
evening to ground our entire fleet in order to conduct our own internal investigation and satisfy ourselves, the police and regulators of the roadworthiness of our fleet and the adequacy of our maintenance program,” he said. In the days following, the trucks gradually resumed service in the Cardinia Shire with releases of regular updates on trucks running throughout the area. In its most recent update, Cleanaway said garbage collections had returned to normal. It read, “Cleanaway had 10 vehicles on the road today, including contract vehicles and vehicles on hire. Extra
vehicles are continuing to return to service.” “Recycling services will start tomorrow (Wednesday) to clear the backlog throughout the week. Cleanaway are expecting 10 vehicles to work over the weekend to bring recycling services back on track.” The Pakenham-Berwick Gazette’s Facebook community was divided in its response, with some outraged over the delays, while others applauded the company for taking safety precautions. Kelly said it was a “slight inconvenience.” “It’s not a bad customer service and
why ask for a refund on rates when it was out of the control of the council,” she said. Others said there should have been a more proactive approach from the company. “Why did it have to take someone to die to do these safety checks?” Tony said. Others mentioned that they might have to hire a skip bin to accommodate for the extra rubbish at their property. Cardinia Shire Council said the garbage collection process was now back to normal.
