By JONATHON HOWARD NOOSA residents have been waiting to celebrate the successful de-amalgamation from Sunshine Coast Council for almost 12 months.

But the wait is over with the Noosa Country Show in Pomona being named the official host of the de-amalgamation party on the 12 and 13 September.

Noosa Council has also announced 12 September as Noosa’s show holiday to allow a break for families to enjoy the show.

The story behind the Noosa Country Show is one of rich history and a connection with Noosa’s country roots for the past 105 years.

The show has been presented since 1909 at the beautifully located Pomona Showgrounds and is one of Queensland’s premier traditional country shows.

This year the show will feature all your favourite animals, rides, activities and workshops, as well as some big name acts including Angry Anderson on Friday from 6.30pm and much more?

Chef turns seasoned

By JOLENE OGLE HE'S a chef by day and an axewielding soldier by night, but Cooroy RSL chef Paul Smith wouldn’t have it any other way.

Paul has just returned from Croatia where he and eight other enthusiasts represented Australia in the Battle of the Nations, a world-wide historical, full contact battle using medieval weapons and armour.

The sport is new to Australia with Paul and his team the first Australian team to compete at the Battle of the Nations, which held its first international battle in Europe in 2009.

All armour and weapons used are historically accurate and must adhere to a strict list of requirements and a team or person wins a fight when their opponent is knocked over.

Paul said his passion for the sport evolved from his first love -- historical re-enactments. “I used to travel to Caboolture and the like to take part in historical re-enactments,â€? he said. “Then one day a friend and I saw the historical medieval battles on the internet‌ so we got a team together.â€?

That was in 2012 and since then Paul has competed in two Battle of the Nations, once in France and then only six weeks ago in Croatia.

His historically accurate, 14th century, European-made armour has protected him from swinging mace, two-handed axes and sword attacks, but Paul said he loved the challenge of the battle. “I was born for this,� he said.

The Australian historical battle team are looking for recruits to join their troupe for the 2015 Battle of the Nations. To join the team, you will need to be fit or willing to train and full armour will set you back $2500, but it’s all worth it, according to Paul. “It’s a great challenge‌ you have to be very fit to take part,â€? he said.

Training for the Battle of the Na-

tions includes intense cardio workouts such as running, skipping, and interval training. But for Paul, the best part of competing in historical battles is the friendships formed between the nations. “It’s great because we all share the same passion,� he said. “We all help each other at the battles.� “Coming from Australia to compete in Europe, we don’t have a lot

of supporters who can travel with us, so it’s great to make great friends at the battles. “The Austrians, New Zealanders and Mexicans are great friends of ours and we help each other.�

Paul is now training for the 2015 Battle of the Nations and is proud to have fellow Cooroy RSL chef Brendan Dobe as the newest Australian historical battles recruit.

Hot at the big end of town

By JONATHON HOWARD GANGBUSTER apartment sales at Veridian, a luxury resort listing on Hastings Street and several Witta Circle house sales are helping build confidence in Noosa’s high-end property market.

The Sheraton Noosa Spa and Resort has been listed on the market for sale this month, following a previous attempt to sell the luxury resort in 2011.

The 176-room Sheraton, which covers 9946 square metres, was listed by owners Valad Property Group Ltd, with an anticipated price expected to exceed $100 million, however a price has not been listed.

The Valad Group had purchased Sheraton Noosa Resort and Spa in 2007 for $93.6 million from the Starwood Hotel and Resorts Group - Starwood continues to manage the resort.

A multi-million dollar refurbishment has also just been completed

at the Sheraton Noosa and includes improvements to the porte cochere (entrance facade), rooms, bathrooms, corridors, restaurant and bar plus key services such as air conditioning and lifts.

Veridian Noosa residential sales have reached 75 per cent capacity, with only two luxury villas remaining. Belle Property Projects sales manager Mat Cassidy, who manages the Veridian portfolio, said the company had made about 100 sales since early 2013.

He attributed the sales turnaround to greater interest from buyers and the attractive Noosa lifestyle.

“There’s renewed interest in the Veridian apartments for the amazing location and lifestyle it offers, but also for competitive prices,” Mr Cassidy said.

Mr Cassidy said there were now two villas remaining and one twobedroom apartment, plus about 30 one-bedroom apartments priced as low at $295,000.

“There’s a range of price options for people looking from $2.1 million to $295,000,” he said.

In further property news, a waterfront home at Witta Circle, which belonged to Bob Biddle (founder of Origin Healthcare) and his wife Renee, has sold for $6.5 million.

The Noosa Sound home, 25 Witta Circle, is a 600 square metre property with four bedrooms, three bathrooms and a 20-metre lap pool.

The home was believed to be purchased by a couple from New Zealand who work in the insulation industry.

The Biddles sold their Melbourne penthouse in St Kilda Road for $15.4 million in 2009 having purchased 25 Witta Circle for $8.25 million in 2008 from Graeme Cutler.

They Biddles also reportedly spent about $2 million on rebuilding parts of the house.

Unofficially, keep quiet if you want to stay nude

By JONATHON HOWARD NOOSA nudists attempting to have Alexandria Bay officially recognised as Queensland’s first nude beach have been urged to “let sleeping dogs lie”, by Member for Noosa Glen Elmes MP. Mr Elmes has instead warned stirring the political and social pot around the A-Bay nudity issue, could attract a “less desirable outcome”.

A-Bay has been considered Noosa’s unofficial nude beach for more than 50 years, but several recent complaints to police resulted in a police visit to A-Bay. The visit resulted in two infringement notices being issued to people going nude in public, but police stopped short of calling the move a crack down on A-Bay’s nude beachgoers.

Small protests have since taken place at A-Bay, led by the region’s nudists, who are also debating whether to push for A-Bay to become an official nude beach.

In April 2008, the then 77-yearold Kenneth Wenzel challenged a $75 infringement notice he was issued while going nude at Third Bay in Coolum in July 2005.

In what many nudists consider a landmark ruling, Mr Wenzel won the case and had his fine overturned and was awarded $2000 in costs.

Magistrate Barry Barrett said at the time that Queensland was a state that, on one hand, allowed large numbers of people on Alexandria Bay for the Nude Olympics without challenge and, on the other hand, sought out older males hidden by vegetation on other secluded beaches for “alleged criminal conduct”.

Mr Elmes said of recent concerns that it was best to avoid stirring the pot or risk drawing further attention to A-Bay as an unofficial nude hotspot.

The annual Nude Olympics was used to identify a "double standard" in a landmark public nudity court hearing in 2008 - but are sleeping dogs best left alone?

“If people are going to stage protests and push the matter, it could result in an outcome that’s less desirable,” he said.

Mr Elmes said police, the council and the State Government had for years turned a blind eye to ABay, but with continued pressure that could all change.

“Don’t stir this up - you may get an outcome that’s less desirable than the current situation,” he said.

“Don’t put police, council or the state in a position where they may have to address the unofficial nude beach status of A-Bay - it is best, in this case, to let sleeping dogs lie.”

Noosa Today sought a comment

from Noosa Council in relation to the A-Bay debate.

Sunshine Coast Council had previously taken a role in the matter, but instead Noosa Council wants nothing to do with it and has passed the onus to the State Government.

A council spokesperson responded with a single sentence answer stating that Alexandria Bay is located in the National Park and is controlled by the State Government.

“Council has no comment on this issue,” the spokesperson said.

viously called on the then Sunshine Coast Council mayor Bob Abbot to support a push to have A-Bay declared Queensland’s first official nude beach.

Cr Abbot had told media sources in 2008 that he was not the champion of Free Beach and the issue was not high on his list of priorities at the time, but he said he would take the matter to a council meeting.

Cr Abbot had said he felt Mudjimba would be inappropriate and thought the group would have more success with Alexandria Bay, in becoming Queensland’s first (official) nude beach. “(A-Bay) it’s isolated, there are

no residents anywhere near it and there’s little chance of people wandering and stumbling upon it,” Cr Abbot told media sources in 2008.

The previous push found that in order for A-Bay to be considered an official nude beach, it would have to allow suitable access for police and lifeguards.

A-Bay was not considered a good option as the access was considered “difficult”.

The matter never came to fruition and A-Bay remains an unofficial nude beach.

Heads are on The Block

By JOLENE OGLE THOSE of us who can’t miss a Sunday night room reveal will be disappointed to have missed The Block veteran’s Dale Vine and Kyal Demmrich when they visited Noosa last week.

Here for a Mitre 10 conference, the two Channel 9 superstars stayed at the Ivory Palms Resort, Noosaville, where resort manager Geoff Hussin took the opportunity to grab a happy snap with the duo.

“It was a really nice experience,” Geoff said of meeting The Block stars.

“I sent the photos to my daughter and wife and they phoned me, both of them screaming… it’s lucky I knew it was them phoning.

“I can tell you, I went from excited to unpopular very quick.”

Geoff said it was refreshing to meet TV stars who were as friendly and kind in real life as they were on the show.

Dale and team mate Brad Cranfield both first appeared on The Block in 2012, before returning earlier this year for the Fans vs Faves series which saw them take home $507,250 in winnings.

Vote agrees to free holiday buses

By JONATHON HOWARD SEVERAL hot topics were up for debate during Noosa Council’s monthly general committee meeting on Monday.

Councillors voted in favour of running free buses during the Christmas and Easter holiday periods, however all motions are pending a final vote during the council’s ordinary meeting tonight (Thursday 28 August).

If approved, the free buses, which proved popular during Easter this year, would allow thousands of passengers free transport in and around the shire.

Councillor Sandy Bolton moved the motion and it was seconded by councillor Joe Jurisevic.

Routes that are likely to be included in the free bus service included 626 Sunrise Beach to Tewantin via Noosa Heads, 627 Sunshine Beach to Tewantin via Noosa Heads, 630 Noosa to Nambour via Eumundi and 631 Noosa to Nambour via Eumundi and Cooroy.

Councillor Bolton heaped praise on the council’s staff for their hard work preparing and delivering a recommendation that assisted residents during holiday festivities.

Junction parking A petition to re-configure parking at Noosa Junction was thrown out by councillors following a council assessment.

The report also flagged that a parking re-configuration would not allow for a free flow lane in either direction, and the Noosa Junction Master Plan revealed a strong objection to angle parking due to the potential reduction in traffic capacity.

Mayor Noel Playford moved the motion to take no action on the petition and it was seconded by councillor Bob Abbot - pending a final vote during tonight’s meeting.

Coolooa national heritage listing Five Noosa councillors have expressed their support for National Heritage Listing of Cooloola as proposed by the National Heritage Trust, while two councillors voted against the motion.

Councillors were asked

whether they want to write to the National Heritage Trust in support of the heritage listing for Cooloola, with a number of exclusion areas to consider.

Among those exclusions were the Teewah Airstrip, Teewah Beach Village and Noosa North Shore Campground.

Councillors debated the future risks of listing certain areas in the heritage listing, including fears the development of a shed at the Teewah Airstrip could be restricted.

However, council staff assured councillors that there was scope for the Teewah Airstrip to expand and any development application would be impact assessable under the council’s development application process.

Mayor Noel Playford and councillor Tony Wellington voted against the motion, with a final vote expected during tonight’s council meeting.

NOOSA residents have expressed shock this week after it was revealed there are only three Noosa Council local laws officers patrolling the shire to stamp out dog-related issues.

The three officers have quite a job on their hands, with reports of dog attacks from Kin Kin to Sunshine Beach and all towns in between.

Responsible dog owners are calling on council to start dishing out hefty fines in a bid to remind dog owners to play by the rules.

Dog attack victim Richard Jackson had previously suspected council was biting off a little more than they could chew.

“It seems like there’s never a ranger (local law officer) around to enforce the dog rules at restricted on-leash dog areas and in particular beach access points,” he said.

Tewantin resident Sylvia Hebron said she was traumatised by a dog attack near Heritage Park several years ago.

“The park has a dog off the leash area which we always felt should be fenced,” she said.

Mrs Hebron said she was walking her daughter’s dog towards the Tewantin Park when she was confronted by two American Bulldogs.

“It was traumatic for me as well as the poor small dog receiving extensive injuries and spending a week in the Animal Hospital incurring huge expense, which the owners of the American Bulldogs were ordered to pay by a magistrate,” she said.

“At the time we felt the dogs should have been destroyed. I was knocked to the ground and was bitten. What if it had been a small child,

Mrs Hebron said the owners of the Bulldogs pleaded with the magistrate for a payment plan. She said they later avoided paying the total after they moved interstate.

“Several attacks have occurred in Heritage Park and I, along with other dog walkers who live in the area adjacent to the park, prefer to keep away from the park and away from irresponsible dog owners,” she said.

Noosa Council’s Disaster Management and Public Order Manager, Ron Thomas, said council’s three local laws officers responded to all local law matters.

“This includes monitoring and issuing infringements for breaches of the local laws and

Animal Management Act,” he said.

Mr Thomas said staffing levels had been determined this year, but council was preparing a review of service levels in the coming months.

“While staffing levels have been determined for this year, a review of the local laws and parking management will be conducted in coming months to examine current levels of service and determine the appropriate levels of service that council will deliver to our community into the future,” he said.

Bills are too power-ful POWER bills landing in Noosa letterboxes this week are knocking some residents off their feet with complaints over “excessive” charges to fixed-rate supply.

Eumundi resident Chris Andrews wrote to Noosa Today to flag the issue after he received a whopping 71 per cent compounded increase.

“I’ve just received my AGL electricity bill and while the usage-charge component has only gone up by five per cent to 28 cents per kWh, the fixed-rate supply charge component has increased by a massive 66 per cent,” he said.

“Not only has this increased charge added a big increase of $120 per year to AGL’s customers' bills, but the change in balance between the fixed and use-related components of the bill encourages

people to increase their electricity use.”

Mr Andrews said his household was a conservative electricity user at 13kWh per day, but his electricity bill has gone up 13 per cent due to the charge increase.

“However, a profligate household that uses twice as much as we do, 26 kWh per day, will only see a nine per cent increase in their electricity bill,” he said.

He said the new pricing regime makes it relatively cheaper to use more electricity than less.

“If my household was to increase its electricity consumption by 20 per cent our electricity bill would only go up by 16 per cent, giving us better value if we use more,” he said.

“You can expect to see the fixed-rate supply charge component become proportion-

ately even larger in the future, encouraging even more electricity use.”

“Not only does this new pricing regime encourage more electricity use (you’re paying for it, so you may as well use it) but it discourages energy conservation efforts, reduces the effectiveness of energy saving appliances, and reduces the advantage of using alternative low-pollution sources of energy.”

Noosa Today is seeking clarification from the Queensland Energy Minister Mark McArdle over charges and Mr Andrews' concerns.

The sterling reviews have come from both the Gourmet Traveller and The Australian.

“We have an international theme but with a regional focus. We hope to present and communicate, to the modern diner, a snapshot of our food philosophy but at the end of the day we just hope people think our food is tasty.

“The whole team works incredibly hard with the hope that our guests have an enjoyable time.”

Speaking about the future of Wasabi, Ms Gjestland said the team was working towards growing almost everything they need on their farm at Honeysuckle Hill and all the organic matter from the restaurant is going back into their Bokashi recycling system.

“Bokashi is a Japanese method which retains all nutrients, organic material and microbes and returns it to the soil,” she said.

Noosa has a Voice

By JOLENE OGLE A NEW community forum has been launched and invites everyone from the Noosa Shire to share their thoughts, complaints and suggestions with other locals.

Founded by former Noosa Council candidate, Jess Glasgow, The Noosa Voice aims to “enhance the social and economic growth” of the Noosa Shire.

Mr Glasgow started the web-based community forum in 2013 as a means to bring together active local residents who wanted to suggest ideas for improving the shire.

“I built Thenoosavoice.com.au website to provide a place for Noosa locals to have better engagement with their community,” he said.

“If there is something residents feel the need to address they can jump on the site and start a new forum topic.

The site also gives locals the opportunity to see what others think.”

Now a not-for-profit organisation, led by a board of directors, The Noosa Voice has raised issues such as developing environmentally friendly job options for the region, inspired discussion about a people jury for Noosa, called for action against vandals and started to raise funds for CCTV cameras in Noosa.

Mr Glasgow said the driving force behind The Noosa Voice was to provide an online community for locals.

“Websites are everywhere, and a lot of them are about attracting tourism to Noosa… what about the people of Noosa?” he said.

“They need a platform where people can communicate about anything and everything… things that are happening in Noosa, and things that are not.”

Councillor Frank Wilkie has thrown

his support behind the online forum saying it is typical of Noosa’s technologically driven economic future.

“Increasingly, we’ve seen more and more people working from home, producing and exporting services online and importing dollars. This lowimpact, high-yield economic activity is a good fit for Noosa,” he said.

“Business activity that previously required high-impact, bricks and mortar construction, offices and showrooms is now being done behind closed doors in homes.

“It’s important we recognise the growth of the online community and economy and maximise our community’s access to modern telecommunications.”

Mr Glasgow said a smart phone app for The Noosa Voice will be available soon to help locals connect online and on-the-go with a forum and photo uploading option.

By JONATHON HOWARD SOON-TO-BE mum Jaye Wales is nearing the end of her pregnancy, but she worries about the 45-minute drive to Nambour Hospital.

Her worries have been echoed by dozens of pregnant Noosa ladies, who are calling for a birthing centre to be built at Noosa Hospital.

"I’ve had some complications with my pregnancy and I’ve had to make regular trips to Nambour Hospital. I think that although the staff and services at Nambour are good, it would be more convienent to have a birthing centre locally in Noosa.

I also think Nambour could benefit from sharing the load more, especially where pregnancies are not considered higher risk,” Jaye Wales (38 weeks pregnant) of Noosaville.

Anna Merry has heaped praise on staff at Nambour Hospital, but admits the drive from Noosa to Nambour was stressful due to her short labour.

"I had Fin at Nambour and the staff were great. Although, I was anxious on the drive up to Nambour because my labour was only two-and-a-half hours and the 45-minute drive was bumpy and rocky, which didn’t help - I’d certainly support a local birthing centre because even though it’s only supposed to be 45 minutes to Nambour, it can take an hour," Anna Merry with Fin (five months) of Sunshine Beach.

Show celebrates the shire Noosa Show Society vice- president Perene Barker takes us inside the event.

“Get ready for the de-amalgamation party this September,” says Noosa Show Society vice- president Perene Barker.

What is the show theme this year ... and how did it come about?

I WAS thinking about a theme for the show when this current committee took over the reins at the end of March this year and thought of how much the local community fought for the de-amalgamation and how there had not been any celebration of such since it came in action.

So I ran it past Cr Bob Abbot ... he had said to me how many people had put it to him to have such an event, but he was not willing to put the idea forward as council was in no way in a position to spend funds on a party. So, I said to Bob, how about we make the show the party? And he replied, good idea. So, this year the theme for the show is ‘A Celebration of Noosa Shire’

as being a de-amalgamation party. So welcome back Noosa Shire and the party is on.

Could you tell us why the Noosa Country Show takes place in Pomona?

People often ask me this - the answer is really quite simple - the town of Noosa was originally Pomona and not Noosa Heads or Noosaville. The business hub was at Pomona and so too was the council. In fact, the old council chambers is the Pomona Museum today. Pomona (goddess’ name for fruit) was chosen as the place to be the hub as it is situated in the middle of the Noosa shire. The dynamics of the area have changed and the society is not in a position to sell up and move and really does not want to, we like it here where it’s authentic.

What are your hopes and dreams for the show?

I have many hopes and dreams for the Noosa Country Show and the Pomona Showgrounds. First off was to get the show up and going and give it a kick. I am very happy and contented that in such a short time, the wonderful team that is the Noosa Show Society is presenting such a fantastic and full show. The showgrounds is a community asset, purposely built for the community though it is privately owned by the Show Society. The intention was to add and upgrade facilities to accommodate more attractions and events. The showgrounds is currently the home of the Pomona Tennis Club, Pomona Squash Club, Pomona Pony Club, Sunshine Coast Mower Racing Club and the Pomona Caravan Park.

Tell us some more about the future of the show?

We are currently upgrading for touring caravans and caravan clubs and we are hoping to

get an undercover arena built in the near future, for not only the show but for Pony Club and equestrian events. In that package would also be facilities for the show cattle, so they are out of the weather and some stables for horses. The showgrounds is a stopover point on the Noosa Trail Network and needs safe overnight accommodation for horses.

My mother and I are also offering her house for the show society, which started its life at the Coolum School House, was moved to the beach side of Hastings Street and then to where it is now at Tewantin. The house will be moved to the showgrounds for new offices and a members area for meetings and gatherings. At the moment, the office is a store room with us falling over each other. Also the house will live on at the showgrounds.

The Noosa Country Show is jam packed with activities including show jumping.

How are younger people getting involved?

“Next Gen” (Next Generation) is a program started a couple of years ago through the Queensland Chamber of Agricultural Societies (QCAS), which run the EKKA, and the Noosa Show Society. It now has some great younger members who have represented us previously, via the Showgirl and Rural Ambassador competition, who are going to start the program up. They are inviting the younger generation to get involved with the show and bring their ideas with them. It is a great way to learn all aspects of the show, get knowledge on how to organise events, office procedures, grounds management, become community minded and meet people from all sorts of aspects and fields.

Medal winners rule the world Benny’s

IT MAY have rained last weekend but it didn’t stop our Coast swimmers from pocketing medals at the Pan-Pac Championships on the Gold Coast.

Buderim’s Melanie Schlanger and Noosa’s Brittany Elmslie combined with the Campbell sisters to again rule the world in the 4x100metres relay.

Fellow local Taylor McKeown was also in the medals grabbing a bronze in the 200 breastroke.

The run of success is sure to continue with this year’s Noosa half

marathon winner Melanie Panayiotou (pronounced Penny-o-too) will don the running shoes for this year’s Coast marathon on 31 August.

After securing a personal best time in Glasgow, the Australia Zoo vet could be excused for not running the full distance and maybe pace out the 10 kilometre.

More than 7000 are expected to line up, including last year’s 10 kilometre men’s winner Michael Shelly.

The Gold Coaster surprised everyone including the Kenyans to take out the prestigious marathon event in Glasgow.

All the action swings towards Noosa in the first weekend of September with the ever reliable Noosa Jazz Festival to take centre stage.

Organiser Vickii Cotter has really

turned up the heat for the four-day festival, which is in its 23rd year.

While most of the action is domiciled in the Festival village at the Lions Park, Ms Cotter has plenty going on elsewhere.

Allow me to give everyone the rundown on this year’s event.

Thursday 4 September its big band music from the Brisbane Australian Army band. I suggest you bring the dancing shoes for the Village showstopper.

There are a wonderful array of opportunities on Friday, the ever popular Tastings on Hastings will appease everyone’s taste buds at noon.

To heaven and back

Joy volunteered at the op shop for 18 years and was very well-known, working at the front desk three days a week.

She was always willing to take on extra shifts if needed, which often meant she would be volunteering five days a week, almost becoming part of the furniture.

Joy made many friends over the years with both customers and colleagues.

Talents on show LOCAL students have been busy competing in a variety of eisteddfods throughout the Sunshine Coast with many local kids putting in outstanding performances.

Singing teacher Debra Casey said she was proud of her students who all “rose to the occasion” for the Sunshine Coast Junior Eisteddfod.

Most students who participated either placed in their competition or were awarded a high commendation for their performance.

Bailey Tobin was awarded first place as the junior vocal champion for singers under 14 years while Adam Jurisevic, Bailey Rogers, Jess Keast, Jeremy Christie, Emily Russell and Nora Aubineau did an amazing job with a list of place wins and high commendations for their performances.

Music students from the Good Shepherd Lutheran College competed in the Nambour and Gympie Eisteddfod as the Noosa String Ensemble.

The Good Shepherd Lutheran College primary quartets took out 1st, 2nd, and 3rd at Nambour and 1st, 2nd and highly commended at Gympie.

The team won first place four times and second place once at the Gympie Eisteddfod. In Nambour, the band won a swag of awards for their large orchestra including several individual prizes for quartet, duet and solo performances.

The music students wanted to say a big thank you to their music teacher and conductor Silvi Eckley.

Hospital hope

To those teenagers who are passionate about surfing Noosa.

Sunshine Beach State High School students surf every Monday morning.

I am a regular visitor to the Noosa Marina on Friday nights, when there is music entertainment between 5 and 8pm. Lots of people come to enjoy the music, a glass of wine and a light meal or the famous fish and chips. Sometimes people also enjoy a dance. Just recently I found out that this is solely sponsored by the Wine Bar. None of the other businesses contribute to the music, financially.

So, a big thankyou to the Harbour Wine Bar proprietors for trying to keep music alive!

To those motorists who continue to travel too close to cyclists. Please give us some room on the road.

To the dog owners flouting the rules please pick up your dog poo and keep your dog restrained.

THANKYOU for publishing my concerns regarding the future of Noosa Hospital.

May I extend the debate to include the many years we had to fight to make Noosa Hospital a reality for both public and private patients.

Neither I nor Bruce Davidson (former State Member for Noosa) will stand by to watch our hard-won hospital fade into oblivion.

The argument for local hospital services being expended is now stronger than it ever was.

The fact that we now have a catchment region of around 100,000 residents including many more children is compelling enough, but add the high birth rate of well over 600 babies from this region which are born outside the region at Nambour and Buderim, and the picture reveals an urgent imperative.

The fact that we now have fewer publicly funded beds than when the Noosa Hospital opened, and that the types of services and procedures being provided to public patients in those beds have been downgraded, has impacted on the hospital and its community.

There was a time when public patients could have their hip and knee replacement surgery at Noosa Hospital. Orthopaedic surgeons knew that such procedures were able to be done more cost efficiently at Noosa than at the larger teaching hospital at Nambour, so why have such procedures been discontinued?

Health Services CEO Kevin Hegarty admits that Queensland Health has the right and the power to purchase whatever services are needed by the community, so why not restart the efficient orthopaedic service at Noosa Hospital to help reduce orthopaedic waiting lists at public hospitals, and to reduce State Government costs of providing for the hundreds of public patients waiting in pain and without mobility for hips, knees etc. Surely it is a no-brainer!

Alexandria Bay and legislation IN FULL agreement with Michael Ward (Noosa Today, 21 August, p22), there is no doubt in my mind that in the 21st century community attitudes have evolved to the point of legislating for a remote place like Alexandria Bay to become a model for an official nude beach in Queensland.

Under the existing law (Summary Offences Act Qld 2005) it seems to me that the police become hostages to possible daily and even twice daily complaints from individuals who espy a nude, even though their behaviour may not be disorderly, threatening, or violent.

The “offensive” aspect may just be a glimpse of something seen by an individual.

By the time the police get to the scene of the reported offence, it would be rare for them to find the individual under complaint. Instead, it seems that anybody else can be apprehended, even though there was no specific complaint against them. I am not sure that this is just or even legal under the above Act. Perhaps easily “offended” individuals could be offered post-traumatic stress counselling.

We definitely need to change outdated Queensland state legislation as regards nude

beaches to align with accepted community practice.

The new Act would free up the police to investigate genuine complaints of disorderly, offensive, threatening, violent behaviour occurring throughout the community, on all beaches and elsewhere.

As it stands, the police resource becomes surrogated to the whims of a few individuals “offended” by glimpses of nudity.

Until such legislative changes, Noosans hopefully can maintain their long-held tolerant attitudes towards Alexandria Bay naturists, accepting the inflow of tourist benefits and the educational aspect of increasing acceptance of one’s own body as well as those of others.

This is an argument for change of outdated legislation, the use of our police force for genuine abusive and threatening situations, and for maintaining tolerance towards alternative views of body and lifestyle.

Asked and answered I GUESS the respondent to my article in last week’s Noosa Today now has his answer to my claim “how the Sunshine Coast Council is doing a good job”. This came in the article provided by the council appearing in the Eumundi Green newspaper published last week.

The SCC has invested $8 million in infrastructure in the Eumundi, Doonan Verrierdale and Weyba Downs area over the past six years.

This has included the upgrading of Doonan’s Duke Road culvert; road reseals and rehabilitation in Weyba Downs; sealing Doonan Bridge East road and; upgrading of Eumundi’s streetscape and for the Lone Hand Bridge.

I believe Noosa Council does a reasonable job catering for residents and ratepayers within a three to four-kilometre radius of Hastings street (barring the north shore that is), but the infrastructure once you get past Beckmans Road is looking pretty jaded to me.

JONATHAN Howard’s article in last Thursday’s 'Noosa Today' was a timely reminder

owners must take responsibility for their offleash dogs so all beachgoers can feel safe.

While dog attacks on the beach might be rare, Noosa Council has missed the point by using this as an excuse for inaction. The mere threat of attack, such as an unfamiliar dog advancing at speed, can easily invoke fear and demands a response, starting with the owners. Owners of dogs prone to potentially threatening behaviour should curb their animal, stick to less populated areas, only go during quiet times, use a leash, or refrain from taking their dog to the beach at all if none of the above works.

For their part, beachgoers may reasonably expect their council to show civic leadership by advocating responsible owner behaviour rather than mouthing platitudes or sprouting unhelpful statistics.

WA business, Australian Camel Dairies, has brought the new product to Australia, which is already popular throughout Europe, and could be the latest cash cow for WA at a tidy $20 per litre.

With an estimated 750,000 feral camels roaming the Australian desert, using the animals for milking may be a feasible solution to culling.

The health conscious claim camel milk is high in nutrients and many link the drink to helping a range of disorders including diabetes, autism, digestive problems and food allergies.

Camel milk has been drunk through arid and semi-arid regions since as early as 3000 BC ac-

cording to a report from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation, which said the use of camels for milk is vital to the nourishment of people living in these areas.

A 2006 report from the same organisation said camel milk, although slightly saltier than cows’ milk, is good for us.

“After all, nature designed it to help baby camels grow up in some of the world’s roughest environments - deserts and steppes. That helps explain why it is three times as rich in Vitamin C as cows’ milk,” the report said.

But, camel milk does come with a warning - it is not pasteurised and can therefore contain nasty bacteria.

But, for many from the health conscious to the lactose intolerant, camel milk is the next best thing.

bydesign WITH DI HENSHALL THE Vitruvian Man - you may all be familiar with this famous drawing by Leonardo da Vinci, in 1490, based on the works of the architect, Vitruvius, who was born about 2000+ years ago. This drawing is often referred to as the Proportions of Man, and we study this drawing in architecture and design because it illustrates the correlation between our own human proportions and those of architectural geometry. It is a perfect example of art-meets-science.

It is also the basis for discussion regarding form and function, scale and proportion. It offers symmetry and balance, structure and reassurance - all elements that should be considered for our comfort at home (and at work!).

The right proportion and scale - whether it’s the size of a room, the size of a piece of furniture or even the size of an accessory can make you feel comfortable and relaxed in your environment. Our eye is pleased with good proportion and disturbed by poor proportion - the role of an interior designer is to make sure the balance of scale and proportion works for you. Take a look at the rooms in your home. If something doesn’t feel right, the chances are something may not have the correct scale or proportion.

HOME SITE IN NOOSA

Low ceilings, small rooms, rooms that are too large, ceilings that are too high for the space (a double height lounge is a classic issue when furnishing), open plan “living”, bedrooms with over-sized furniture - all of these present challenges.

For rooms that lack natural light and have low ceilings, try using mirror to open up the space and change the proportion. I often use mirror as a design trick to change the whole nature of a space. Mirrors tend to frighten people because they don’t like looking at themselves, but mirror is used for reflection of light, space, height, dimension it really is very effective.

When I mention the word wallpaper, some people recoil in horror - but I use wallpaper extensively, often to change the

scale and proportion of a room. You’ve all heard that vertical stripes are supposed to make you look thinner, taller - well, it is true in design. Vertical stripes (or pattern) in wallpaper will make a space seem higher, so it is a great trick for low-ceilinged, boring spaces.

Large rooms present their own challenges - particularly where living, kitchen and dining rooms are combined. Here the correct placement of furniture helps define the function of each area, inviting you to enjoy each space for the purpose for which it is intended. Fabrics with large scale, bold patterns and different textures can add warmth and visual interest.

The size and shape of a piece of furniture in a room is all important. Large modular sofas look fantastic on display in a department store, but will they work at home? Sofas can be dominating - you need to have enough space to move around comfortably. Get advice if you’re unsure. The position, shape and size of ancillary furniture like coffee tables, consoles and lamp tables need to be taken into consideration.

Armchairs with a separate sofa often work better in certain rooms that don’t want to be swallowed up with a singular modular piece.

It is all about scale and proportion.

Accessories, artwork and other decorative items require a practised eye for balance, scale and proportion. The size and placement of artwork needs special attention - a small beautiful painting will have very little impact if it’s lost on a large wall and similarly a colourful timber or ceramic bowl can look ridiculous on an over-sized coffee table. Variety in shape and size works well, as long as there is a common denominator, be it colour, material such as glass or wood, or subject.

Finally remember to leave “white space” in a room. This is the space around and above furniture. A room rarely looks good when every square inch of it is filled. The eye needs room to rest in a space, so provide it by leaving some surfaces uncovered and some walls left alone. Remember the Vitruvian Man - he has space all around him, beautiful proportions and scale - if only we could all be that perfect.

Practical and stylish THE Audi A3 range was expanded to include a four-door sedan early in 2014.

A sub-$40,000 starting price is attractive though on-road costs will push it over that physiological barrier but it does put this prestige German marque within the budget of many who had previously only considered less prestigious cars.

The A3 sedan joins hatchbacks and the recently introduced convertible to really give a wide spread of choice.

Audi designers have done an excellent job with their new A3 sedan giving it a semi-coupe appearance.

The big three German marques are certainly making life interesting with their continued push into lower cost models, often at the expense of top-end models from more affordable marques.

The Audi sedan’s front is dominated by the single-frame grille that Audi pioneered more than a decade ago and which quickly became the company’s design signature.

The interior is very Audi in having not only a neat and functional design, but also being fitted with high quality materials.

Audi A3 sedan has an eight-speaker radio system and Bluetooth phone and audio streaming with information displayed on a retractable 5.8-inch colour monitor mounted on the top of the dashboard. A 7.0-inch screen is part of the Technik option package.

The entry level A3 Attraction we reviewed was powered by a 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engine.

It shuts down two of the four cylinders when minimum power and torque are required such as when the car is cruising on flat country roads and motorways.

All engines are mated to Audi’s S tronic twin-clutch automatic transmissions, six-speed in 1.8 TFSI Ambition quattro and 2.0 TDI Ambition; seven-speed in the 1.4 TFSI and frontwheel drive 1.8 TFSI. Steering wheel paddle shifts are standard in all models.

It comes as no surprise that the Audi A3 sedan achieves the maximum five-star ANCAP rating, it has seven airbags, including a kneebag for the driver.

Crash prevention and/or minimisation features include Electronic Stabilisation Control; Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR); ABS brakes with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD); Electronic Differential Lock (EDL) and rear parking sensors.

The optional $1800 Assistance Package fitted to our test car added adaptive cruise control with Emergency City Braking that automatically brakes the car if it detects an obstacle ahead to either prevent or reduce the impact of a collision.

There’s lane departure warning and high beam assist.

While the Audi A3 sedan is longer than the hatch, its coupe styling means it’s marginally lower.

There’s sufficient rear seat width and headroom to fit three moderately sized adults if they don’t mind a bit of squeezing.

At 425 litres, boot capacity is 45 litres larger than the hatchback’s and has the convenience of a lower loading lip.

Handling is safe and secure and it pushes through corners with no sign of understeer until

it is really pushed at speeds that are unlikely to be attempted by most owners.

Ride comfort is very good and, thanks to an all-new platform, noise and vibration levels are low.

There is some coarse-chip surface tyre noise on Australian backroads but we feel it isn’t to annoying levels.

Official combined fuel usage is 4.7 litres per 100 kilometres.

In real life driving we found it sitting in the mid-fives to low sixes during motorways and in country driving, rising to seven to eight litres per hundred around town.

This is the first time Audi has offered a sedan in its A3 range.

The convenience of a fair-sized boot and an eye-catching price tag should attract many who have previously felt priced-out of the luxury car market.

Top jazz at festival THE Noosa Jazz Festival will swing into action next Thursday with four days of smooth tunes and velvety vocals on offer throughout Noosa.

The main festival will be held at the Lions Park, Noosa Heads, from 5pm on 4 September, and will feature Vince Jones, Steve Clisby, Emma Pask and a swag of other outstanding jazz performers.

As a special treat for jazz lovers, performances can be found in venues throughout town.

For jazz in an intimate setting, then the newly opened The Basement, Noosa Blue Resort, is serving up a delicious blend of jazz artists including Pugsley Buzzard, the Ingrid James Trio and the Robyn Brown Trio.

Pugsley Buzzard will showcase New Orleans style piano and what have been called mesmerising vocals on 4 September, from 7pm.

On 6 September, from 1.30-4.30pm, Ingrid of the Ingrid James Trio will send you off into the evening on a wave of her rich, dark and smooth voice.

A funky mix of blues and jazz will be offered by the Robyn Brown Trio on 7 September, from 12.30-3.30pm.

Dinosaur tees off on China Life of

brine PHIL JARRATT MY old mate, 1976 world champion Peter “PT” Townend was in Hangzhou, China, at the beginning of last week for the official launch of the Red Bull Surfing Shoot Out, when old Clive went off his tits on Q and A. Fortunately, the Red Bull vodkas were flowing fast enough that no-one noticed until the next day.

The river surf event in Hangzhou is a fascinating, unique event, fully funded by Chinese government agencies, local and international competitors, American media coverage and an Aussie contest director (PT). Just another example of how international sports and cultural organisations are working with Chinese communities every day of the week, building lasting links between the Middle Kingdom and the West.

The allegedly honourable Member for Fairfax has done his own share of bridge-building in China, but I would think all of his bridges have been built for the specific purpose of bringing more of his coal to market, creating the obscene wealth upon which his power is based. Considering the facts that a) Chinese money made him, and b) Palmer has been China’s greatest apologist when it suited him, his hysterical remarks on the ABC’s Q and A program were as hypocritical as they were badmannered.

The Chinese were understandably appalled that the politician who shares the balance of power in our national government would brand them “bastards” and “mongrels” who killed their own, but perhaps not as appalled as the millions of thinking Australians who cannot believe we’ve put this bloke in this position.

Hopefully, our neighbours in Fairfax will never make the same mistake again, no matter how many lashings of fairy floss at the dinosaur park Uncle Clive dangles in front of them.

Time travelling in Bali I’VE been having a lot of fun in recent weeks, helping another old mate, photographer Dick Hoole, put together an exhibition called “Dreamland: Bali in the 1970s”. Dick and I were both part of the influx of surfers drawn to Bali by the movie Morning Of The Earth, him in 1973 for the first time, me the following year.

Windro, the head man of the village that surfers passed through between the temple road and the Uluwatu surf break (actually Suluban), was about 80 years old at the time of this photo, but still insisted on being one of the equipment carriers. His son, also Windro, (front) had assumed much of his father’s duties by now, but carrying surfboards and camera gear for a cigarette or a few rupiah was still a novelty, and the whole village joined in.

Windro village kids, 1975. By the mid-1970s, the kids of the village had started to identify with the surfing visitors, wearing discarded surf tee shirts and trying to ride low tide foamies on borrowed boards. They also had a remarkable facility for remembering repeat visitors by name, and often other personal details as well. In 1977, when I turned up with the girl who would become my wife, they chanted, “Pilip’s got new darling”, all the way to the surf.

Temple of Enthusiasm in Canggu, Bali, at the beginning of October, before moving to the Surfworld Museum on the Gold Coast and other Australian venues, alongside regional launches for my new book, “Bali Heaven and Hell”. Every frame in this exhibition is a trip down memory lane to a time etched forever in my memory, perhaps the sweetest memories in half a century of surfing, not just because of the quality of the waves, but because of the relationships we forged with some of the poorest and most loveable people on that beautiful island. Let me share just a couple with you.

Artists on the quiet IN A Tewantin home studio, two artists are hard at work preparing paintings for a silent auction to raise funds for Katie Rose Cottage hospice.

Artists Trish MacDonald and Libby Bowen said they wanted to show their appreciation for the work that Katie Rose Cottage does, its volunteers and staff, “who offer kindness, comfort and relief to all guests who stay or visit.”

Long lunch in the sun AS the weather warms up, it’s time to make the most of spring weather and enjoy a long, lazy lunch as part of the Peregian Beach Food and Fashion Fiesta.

The long lunch will be held in the Peregian Beach Shopping Village on 2 September from 11am, and will showcase local restaurants and their delicious cuisine.

Pitchfork Restaurant owner Kim Galea said the restaurants were working hard to create a memorable lunch.

“We have all been working together

to ensure our guests, no matter where they sit, will be satisfied,” she said.

“Molly’s Cradle, one of the event’s partners, will be showcasing their award-winning wines to complement the food. It will be a day to remember.”

Organised by the Lions Club of Peregian and the Peregian Beach Business Association, the lunch will also feature a fashion show created by local boutiques and TAFE students, who will show off their latest designs.

Diners can also go in the draw to win over $8000 worth of prizes do-

nated by local businesses, with raffle tickets to be sold throughout the event.

The Peregian Beach Food and Fashion Fiesta is proudly supported by the Noosa Council and partnered with local businesses including Ray White Peregian Beach, The Retreat Beach Houses, Peregian Family Medical Centre and the Sunshine Vein Clinic.

Ingredients: 1 and 1/2 cups mixed berries including strawberries and blueberries 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 tablespoon apple juice 1 and 1/3 cup basic muesli 1 and 1/3 cup reduced fat Greek-style yoghurt

Method: 1. Combine berries, vanilla and apple juice in a bowl.

2. Spoon two tablespoons of muesli into four one-cup capacity glasses.

Medal detectors THE Cooroy Gymnastics team have returned home with a pile of awards from the Sunshine Coast Regional Championships.

Held at Maroochydore Gymnastics Club over two weekends in August, the competition brought together some of the most impressive gymnast talent on the Sunshine Coast.

Local team, Cooroy Gymnastics, took out six titles over the two weekends of tough competition.

In what has been called the best outcome for the Cooroy Gymnastics, the girls’ team excelled winning eight regional titles including two all-round titles at level five and level six.

Women’s Coast Letisha Thomson said she was proud of the girls who competed.

“All girls had excellent results and personal achievements including passing their levels, personal bests, state qualifications, regional challenge members, apparatus placings and overall placings,” she said.

The boys’ team also did well, with a number of placings in the competition. New Men’s coach, Lyndon McKay, has recently joined the Cooory Gymnastics team and said he is focused on getting the team ready for the state championships in seven weeks’ time.

Pirates end on muddy note

By JODIE BUSHBY UndeR 9 white THE rain has ended the season a week early for the mighty Noosa Pirate U9 Whites. The boys were really looking forward to the carnival, and by all reports had trained the house down this week. During the season, the boys really developed into a great team and played some great footy, learning the game and really making all of us proud. This is a big credit to their coach Issac Smith. What a great year.

UndeR 11 gold Unfortunately this is where the season comes to an end for the Mighty U11 Goldies, going down to Palmwoods in very bleak conditions. It was a very tough game in extremely miserable conditions.

UndeR 12a The Under 12A finished off the regular season with a hard fought win over Caboolture. The game was played in very wet and muddy

conditions. Overall, we finished the season in third place and next week the side has its semifinal down at Kawana at 9am, so come down and support the U12A mighty Pirates.

UndeR 13a After the worst possible start, the Pirates came up with the best possible result, and will now play off during the week with Gympie for a spot in the semis. This team is starting to show the potential that the team really has.

UndeR 14B 14Bs headed down to Bribie in terrible conditions. It bucketed down the entire game. Special mention to Jhy Symes who courageously dived on a loose ball off the second half kick-off with opposition all over him. It was one of those plays where you know it’s not going to be pretty and Jhy was subsequently taken to hospital with what ended up being a very badly swollen and bruised shin. You never gave up boys, and for that you should all be proud.

The game’s on and away the side goes, with rains getting heavier. Captain Remy ran the reds on and got into the action catching a slippery pill that popped up in front of him to go forward mowing down a few and then passed back. Deserved Domino’s Pizza Player of the Match Atticus revelled in the difficult conditions securing ball driving over and scoring two tries. The game could have gone either way and the boys did extremely well given the conditions.

Caloundra were the bigger team physically and pressed home this advantage on the scoresheet, but they were more than matched by the Fins spirit, guts, fight and never-say-die attitude. Harry, Jason, Ethan, Jarrah, Ashton, Soren and James all punched well above their weight and Lockie Dudgeon, always a threat in attack, finished off a team effort by going over for his 32nd try of the season, the second highest tally in the league. Good game played in trying conditions under lights on Friday night. Noosa forwards were again dominating in the heavy conditions and the backs enjoyed the space they created. Polished performances from the usual suspects with notable efforts from Noah, Kai, Leo and Zac Norman. Tries scored by Jesse Russell (2), Tom Seimon, John Gelling (2) and Sameet Raju while Josh Brooks kicked 1 conversion. Great game while playing out of position by Dominos Pizza Player of the Match Thomas Campbell.

Juniors show the touch way

GREAT touch football action was on display once again last week in our junior competition. It won’t be long until our seniors will be seeking pointers from this next generation of touch stars. The Purple Panthers and Screaming Iguanas got the afternoon underway in a spirited match with the Iguanas taking the win.

Zayne, Grace, Paige and Lucas played well for their teams. Blazers and the GSLC (girls) played a great game with Ella, Nico, Kiandra and Zayne having mighty games. The final U10 match was a battle of the Dean siblings with Aussie Rebels proving too strong for the Pink Storm this week, but I’m sure revenge will be on their minds in the next encounter.

Parker, Curtis, Makayla, Zoe and Ben played strongly.

Our U12 division began with Saints taking the points against Banana Splits with Abbi, Will and Jaimaica producing strong performances. In a game that was nail biting to the very end, GSLC (girls) were ahead of the Purple Storm by just one touchdown at the siren. Morgan, Charlie, Bella and Raene showed great skill. In another display of brother-sister rivalry Gus and Pearl led their respective teams around the park before Vipers took the match. Millie and Tomas also played well.

In the U14/16 division, there were10 teams playing for bragging rights. NDSHS 8s (Mixed) just had the edge against the NDSHS 9s with Lili-Rose, Lexie and Billy playing well. GSLC (girls) went down fighting against Sunshine Rebels. Jessica, Clancy and Tyla were standouts in their game. A great spirited game was had between STCC and SBSHS with Anna, Steivy and Lily leading the way. Luke, Reuben and Hayden B played stellar games in the STCC Pansies win over GSLC (boys) and STCC (girls) had a win against NDSHS 8s.

Paris, Denyta and Pip all played well.

By TONY FROST EIGHT Noosa masters swimmers did themselves and their club proud at the FINA world masters swimming championships in Montreal, Canada.

Competition from 3 to 10 August, six consecutive days in two Olympic pools, followed by a threekilometre open water swim at a converted rowing course, purposebuilt for the 1976 Montreal Olympics.

Jan Croft again showed her dom-

inance at international level, winning two gold, one silver and one bronze medal in the female 70-74 age division, gold for the 800 metre freestyle and the three-kilometre open water swim, where the second placegetter from Japan was over five minutes behind.

Jan’s silver medal was in the 400 metres freestyle event where gold went to Judy Wilson from Great Britain,who represented her country at the Olympics (Tokyo 1964) and Commonwealth Games (Perth 1962 and Jamaica 1966).

Another outstanding achievement was by Eulah Varty, where she won silver medals in the female 8084 years age group for 400 and 800 metre individual medley events.

THE Fiona Winter Realty/PJ Burns Noosa Tigers advanced to the QAFL North second semifinal after an emphatic 43 point win over Kedron in atrocious conditions at their Weyba Road home last Saturday.

Noosa were just far too physical and hard at the contest from the very start, opening up with a four goal to nil lead at quarter time. It was always going to be hard to peg back in the boggy wet conditions.

The Tiger’s tackling and harassing was simply outstanding and their physical intimidation of their bigger-bodied opponents was a joy to watch for all Noosa

U14 BLUES: Well, in less than favourable conditions the U14 Blues took on the Caloundra panthers for a spot in the grand final. The first quarter saw the ball going up and down the ground as both teams found the conditions trying, and Caloundra was set up behind the ball

faithfuls who weathered the conditions. In fact the final margin of 43 points was more like a 15 goal win in the dry.

The convincing victory now sets up a mouth-watering major semi-final clash with Mayne in Brisbane this weekend.

The Noosa boys are on a roll and know they have to be at their best to trouble the fresh and undefeated flag favourites.

Across the board, it was just a mighty effort however, no one handled the conditions better than Tasmanian vice-captain Welch, who’s marking and general clearance out of defence was just superb.

Captain Peter Trompf again displayed a big game presence winning contest after contest with physical authority.

Cubby Isles, Tom McKittrick and Shane Davis were brilliant

in the midfield, relishing the sloppy conditions and finals-like atmosphere. Meanwhile, Riley Buntain, Harry Opie and Garry Wallace dominated their positions in the back half.

150th senior gamer Nath Winter was instrumental up forward early, capping a terrific milestone effort. Well done Wints!

All in all a great team effort

All of a sudden some quick ball movement saw Mackinnon mark the ball, play on, and Noosa marked it in the square, alas the umpire deemed he was not allowed to play on and the ball was bought back and no score resulted. Quarter time saw the unique score board 0- 0-0 to 0 -0-0. The second saw more slugfest, with the scores locked at nil all when Loki was tripped. He got the ball on and Noosa ran in and kicked a goal, but again they were called back

and not allowed the advantage.

Loki then popped a pass over and again it was called back deemed to have not gone behind his mark - leaving Noosa scoreless. Caloundra seemed to be getting in lower at the ball than Noosa and getting more outside runners and finally Caloundra got reward with a goal and had the half time lead. Noosa came out strong in the third after Benji threw the side around but could not buy a goal at the markets until Loki popped up and put

their first through. Caloundra also got another to keep the lead at three quarter time. The last quarter saw Caloundra hold sway and run out 18 point winners in a hard fought game. The Noosa boys were disappointed and were reminded that they had done a lot this season.

Soaking up the atmosphere

By JOLENE OGLE IT doesn’t sound like something you would want to remember but for ex-Noosa Tigers player Jono Freeman getting drenched in Powerade is something he never wants to forget.

The drenching was all part of a tradition in AFL with Jono’s Brisbane Lions team mates celebrating the 20-year-old’s four goals in their win against Collingwood at the MCG on 16 August, winning by an impressive 67 points.

“It seems to be the go these days, whenever someone gets their first win they cop a drenching,” Jono said.

“I got covered in Powerade in the middle of the (Lions) boys. I got to sing the Brisbane Lions’ song. I’ll never forget that.”

The former St Andrew’s Anglican College student, who grew up in Peregian Beach, said he had always dreamt of playing for the Brisbane Lions and running out onto the MCG for their last game was a dream come true.

“It was pretty amazing. It was my first time at the MCG all together, so I was pretty excited to get out there and play well. To get a

win, is unbelievable,” he said.

Jono started his AFL career with the Noosa Tigers at age 15 playing for the junior team.

Former Noosa Tigers’ coach Brett Maloney said Jono was a stand-out player from the beginning.

“As a player, he’s a big, raw talent. Big athletic-type bloke with the ability to jump, to take a good grab, a good mark,” he said.

“Even at that stage, when he decided to turn it on, that he was a bit above the rest.

“He could do things that make you wonder ‘how could he do that?’

“Especially with his athletic ability, he could weave in and out of traffic. He could take marks most others wouldn’t be able to.”

Jono played for the Noosa Tigers for three years before joining the Brisbane Lions’ Academy and entering the draft pool.

Hearing his name called at the draft, to become a Brisbane Lions’ player was an outstanding moment for Jono, but he said it was his parents who were most excited.

“They’ve seen what I’ve gone through. I’ve

made a lot of trips to Brisbane chasing my dream,” he said.

“They’ve helped me all along the way. Mum used to have to drive me to Brisbane twice a week. They did a lot for me and it was pretty rewarding for them.”

Former coach Brett travelled to Brisbane to watch Jono’s first game with the Lions against the Adelaide Crows on 10 August at the Gabba.

“I went down and watched when he made his debut and (the Lions) got smashed by 105 points and he barely got near the ball.

“Then, in the space of a week, all of a sudden he’s kicked four goals against Collingwood, one of the biggest football clubs in the country, at their home game. That was really pleasing,” Brett said.

Brett said Jono’s achievements have little to do with him and his time spent coaching the newest Lions player, who he describes as an “absolutely outstanding citizen”.

“I’m just rapt for him. It’s not hell of a lot to do with me. I’m just rapt for Jono.

“If anyone deserves it, he does. He’s put the hard yards in,” he said.

“Hopefully he continues to develop and is a key player for Brisbane for many years to come.”

Jono is now preparing for the Lions’ round 23 game against the third-ranked Geelong Cats on 30 August at Simonds Stadium, Victoria.

Ladies top their ladders in divisions NOOSA HEADS Noosa Heads lady bowlers have sides in Divisions 2 and 4 this year and, after last week’s matches, they top the ladder in both.

The Division 2s, under skips Pat Teale and Debbie Austin, took the maximum four points from their encounter with Kawana.

And Jan Burkitt and Jenny Bowie led their Division 4 teams to take two points from their Pelican Waters clash.

The ladies pennant games are played on Mondays when the weather has been mostly fine.

But the men’s matches are scheduled for Saturdays and the past two have been wet, wet, wet.

Only Division 3 could play last

Saturday, under the roof at Mooloolaba, but the boys came home pointless, and cold.

Andrew Dunning and Danny Crameri, a couple of visitors from the Tewantin club, scored the highest winning margin on Tuesday’s mens pairs day.

The runners-up prize went to Neville Graham and Walter Horne.

Wednesday ladies triples winners were Joan Laney, Judy Marsland and Beryl Nelson.

The normal Friday and Saturday games were washed away with the rain.

A reminder that next Monday 1 September sees the staging of the monthly Noosa 1500, an open pairs event, which has again attracted a capacity field.

ON a hot November day in 1961, anaesthetists Dr Roger Bennett and Dr Tess Cramond (nee Brophy) knelt over two subjects laying in swimming trunks on thin mattresses on the floor of an operating theatre at St Andrew’s Hospital Brisbane… a lot was at stake. The victims had been anaesthetised with thiopentone and the muscle relaxant, gallamine.

As one patient underwent mouth-tonose and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, the other was revived using an Ambu- Resuscitator – a mask attached to a bag which when compressed provided air – while doctors monitored vital signs.

This dangerous procedure was to prove that the relatively new Expired Air Resuscitation (EAR) method of revival would work. These facts were revealed to guests at the recent Awards of Excellence for Surf Life Saving Queensland held in Brisbane,

by State President Ralph Devlin QC. Many who have been involved in surf life saving since the 1950s knew that a group had volunteered for this dangerous exercise, but exactly who and what transpired was only known to a few.

training were instructed in the Sylvester- Brosch and Holger - Nielsen techniques of resuscitation. However by the late ’50s these methods had become obsolete and replaced by EAR and it was thought that only trained medical staff could use this new expired method. But a group of Queensland doctors and lifesavers had other ideas making it clear they wished to introduce the new method into surf lifesaving practices.

Then came the November experiment. To prove it worked, Dr Roger Bennett and Professor Tess Cramond arranged for volunteer surf life savers to be anaesthetised with sodium pentothal and other relaxants for two hours. The purpose of the demonstration was to provide first-hand experience with both methods of rescue breathing and the use of the Ambu Resuscitator. It would also allow the Resuscitation Committee to gauge the effectiveness of the teaching methods used by the Surf Life Saving Association.

During the demonstration, conducted with the assistance of the medical and nursing Staff of St Andrew’s Hospital, one victim underwent mouth-to-nose and mouth-tomouth resuscitation, while another was revived using the Ambu Resuscitator, while the doctors monitored vital signs.

Police Force, St John Ambulance Brigade and the hospital staff participated in the demonstration by reviving the four patients. One by one the representatives who numbered about 40, filed down to have their turn.

The ‘guinea pigs’ for the demonstration were Earle Smith of Kirra, Bruce Campbell of metropolitan Caloundra, Alan Doig of Mowbray Park and Jack Dearlove of Mooloolaba. The demonstration, now part of life-saving history, was highly successful in breaking down barriers and reinforcing confidence in EAR methods.

“We did it because we had to sell it and the only way to sell something is to show it,” Earl Smith, one of the guinea pigs, said when asked why they did it.

Many lives have been saved thanks to the dedication of these men and the experience of the two doctors. This was the era of the space race when huge advancements were being made for mankind. It was also a time when the mortality rate from drowning was high, and more effective methods of resuscitation were urgently required.

As a result of this experiment a complete change in resuscitation technique had to be taught to all lifesavers throughout Australia.

In 1959 when TV first came to Queensland, the general public received an inkling of what was in progress when on 13 December the ABC televised a demonstration of EAR, by Alan Doig and narrated by Bruce Campbell.

In July 2004, 43-years later their efforts would be recognised when three of the six, Jack Dearlove, Professor Tess Cramond (nee Brophy) and Earl Smith were all inducted into the Australian Surf Life Saving inaugural Hall of Fame.

This year, Alan Doig, was made a life member of Surf Life Saving Australia.

Summing up this incredible chapter in the history of Surf Life Saving Australia, Devlin said, “Tonight we especially honor Alan Doig, but we also celebrate the ground breaking work of the team - Jack Dearlove MBE, the late Earl Smith AM, Bruce Campbell, Dr Roger Bennett and Professor Tess Cramond AO,OBE. “Their work has not only helped lifesaving organisations develop better methods of resuscitation but also helped humanity throughout the world reduce the mortality rate resulting from drowning and many other threats to life.”

Nippers is the starting point for all life savers - those who dream of donning the yellow and red cap. The Confidence Squad is there to help those who may lack a little confi-

dence and experience when it comes to swimming.

The Confidence Squad program was introduced by Guy Clare last year and is already considered a success with participants learning to swim in the ocean and use Nipper boards.

The annual Nippers sign-on day

is at the Noosa Aquatic Centre this Friday, from 3.30pm and again on Saturday, from 2pm. With the Nipper season due to start on 21 September, there’s no time to waste.

Nippers will need to bring along their birth certificate, Medicare card, Blue Card (if parents have one), togs, goggles and a towel.

THE recent flush-out the Noosa River has received will really start to fire the fish up, with the water flowing downstream bringing with it schools of baitfish, nutrients and even some big fish.

Naturally, the area where all this dirty water gets pushed to is the mouth of the Noosa River, and there’s sure to be some good fish hanging around there.

Flathead are one such fish that will flock to the mouth, and make easy targets of baitfish styled soft plastics such as the Squidgy Fish and Zman MinnowZ. These lures are extremely effective for covering a lot of ground, and when worked around the deeper water they also give a good chance of tangling with a big trevally or two.

As the water starts to clean up, we should start seeing the whiting numbers pick up again, especially for those throwing surface lures.

If you plan to have a crack at the whiting this week, the place holding the most fish at the moment has been the shallows of the Frying Pan located within close

vicinity to the river mouth. This area of shallow sand flats is a popular location for this tasty fish, and working your line across areas that have plenty of yabby holes is always worthwhile.

The beaches should also start fishing well with a lot of the fish from the Noosa River moving onto the open beaches to get away from the fresh water.

Try fishing the beach at Teewah with strips of mullet fillet or pilchards and you’re giving yourself a good chance at catching either a nice tailor, mulloway or even a big bream.

If you’re looking for some fishing-related fun this weekend, pop down to the Davo’s social fishing competition. It takes place this Friday from 4pm. It’s a great family friendly event that includes a free sausage sizzle and refreshments, heaps of great fishing and even some lucky draw prizes.

All you have to do is be at Davo’s Tackle World Noosa by 4pm on Friday, sign up, and you’re off fishing till 1pm on Sunday. It should be a blast especially with better weather expected for the weekend.
