“Mayor Noel Playford is absolutely right about SCC trying to rip-off the Noosa Council $20 million – due to unfinished business including the amalgamation in 2008,” Dr Koerner said.

“Those infrastructure contributions collected by the SCC from the developers building in Noosa since amalgamation must be spent in Noosa and must be transferred back,” Dr Koerner said.

Gearing for complex births

By JONATHON HOWARD NOOSA residents are crying out for improvements to the Noosa Hospital, including the development of a new birthing centre.

To find out more, Noosa Today put the hard questions to Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service chief executive Kevin Hegarty, who provided the following responses.

Could you please confirm rumours the Nambour Hospital birthing centre will close as of 2016, sending all birthing services to the new Kawana Hospital?

When the Sunshine Coast Public University Hospital (SCPUH) opens in late 2016, there will be an expanded birthing service based at that facility. It will be able to provide safe birthing services to even more complex births than what are currently catered for within the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service (SCHHS). That is, expectant mothers with complex pregnancies who currently need to give birth at Brisbane tertiary facilities will no longer have to travel to Brisbane. Choice for expectant mothers will also be expanded through the development of a midwifery led birthing model at SCPUH. Are there any plans to improve the Noosa Hospital to include a birthing centre, or birthing support services?

Importantly, planning for a midwifery-led birthing service at Nambour Hospital, post the opening of the SCPUH is currently occurring.

Noosa Hospital is owned and operated by Ramsay Health Care. The SCHHS funds emergency department services, in-patient beds and other services at Noosa Hospital to meet the needs of public patients.

The examination of options to develop birthing services at Noosa Hospital would be for the consideration of Ramsay Health Care. Comprehensive birthing services require a range of expert staff. The recruitment and retention of staff, as well as the maintenance of their skills is best served in a consolidated model rather than fragmented service sites.

Could you please explain why the Noosa Hospital currently offers a greater number of private beds, when the hospital had first opened with a majority of public available beds?

Pollies clash over hospital services

By JONATHON HOWARD A WAR of words over the future of Noosa Hospital has errupted between Member for Noosa Glen Elmes and Greens candidate for Noosa Joe Shlegeris, as speculation surfaces around an early State Election.

Mr Elmes said in a press release that he was concerned when he saw claims about a future downgrading of services at Noosa Hospital made by Mr Shlegeris, so he pulled Health Minister Lawrence Springborg in to reassure Noosa residents.

Mr Shlegeris had previously slammed the State Government for cutting back on public beds at Noosa Hospital and he pointed

to the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Services’ current and future health service needs document, which he says points to the Ramsay Healthcare-operated hospital as being run on a strictly private basis after the state 2020-21 funding allocations expires.

Mr Springborg has hit back at comments made by Mr Shlegeris and said that public patients would continue to access Noosa Hospital well into the future.

“The Greens candidate should hang his head in shame for spreading this nonsense,” Mr Springborg said.

“Mr Shlegeris should deal in facts and not his own misinterpretation.

“The current contract with

Ramsay Health Care runs to 30 June 2020. There is absolutely no suggestion and absolutely no likelihood that services for public patients at Noosa would cease or desist after 2020 - all that is demonstrated here is the lack of knowledge by a very green, Greens candidate.

“I work extremely closely with Member for Noosa, Glen Elmes, and I have given my word that as long as the LNP government is at the helm, health services will continue to be provided and public patients at Noosa Hospital is a given,” he stated.

However, Mr Shlegeris said the forward plan presented by chairman of Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Board, Professor

Paul Thomas, and chief executive of Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service, Kevin Hegarty, supported his claims.

Mr Shlegeris pointed to the emergency care section which revealed: “the future role of Noosa in the care of public patients is not within the scope of this plan.”

“It will be determined at a later date.”

Mr Elmes said this was the first time the community had heard from the Greens candidate.

“The claims are wrong, misleading and only serve to cause anxiety in the minds of Noosa residents,” Mr Elmes said.

“If he wants to be taken seriously, I encourage him to deal in facts only.”

contains provisions to reflect the ever changing health needs of the community served by the SCHHS. The demand and capacity of facilities operated by the SCHHS, together with other private sector partnerships have changed significantly since 1999. Noosa Hospital is and will remain an important part of the overall network of services, either provided directly or funded by the SCHHS. The SCHHS has consistently funded more than $20m of services for public patients at Noosa Hospital every year.

Could I also please get an idea of the number of births currently taking place at Nambour Hospital?

Birthing numbers within facilities operated by the SCHHS (this includes Nambour and Gympie) are consistently under 3000 per year and this is not forecast to change. The actual birthing rate for 2012/13 was approximately 2700. As part of the Government’s 2012 election commitment, a Mums and Bubs initiative has been implemented. This service is provided by the SCHHS and ensures that new mothers are supported through visits to their home by midwives. This service is provided in the Noosa area. Approximately 68 such visits occurred in Noosa in July 2014.

There is on average at least two support visits to the one mother.

Junction’s up for business NOOSA Junction businesses have had a tough start to 2014, but the tide is beginning to turn following a raft of announcements this week.

Five new businesses are set to open in vacant spaces and the Junction will also host a monthly artesian markets.

There are now 16 vacant lots for lease, which was down from 27 only a month ago.

The new business interest follows a range of inquiries through commercial real estate agents Raywhite Commercial, Hindmarsh Properties and L J Hooker.

Over the next few weeks, Junction visitors will see a new bread shop, micro brewery, Korean restaurant and more.

Noosa Junction Association acting chair and Junction business owner Sue Pollard, said the monthly markets will go ahead on the first Friday of each month.

“The first markets for the Junction is likely to start in October, and continue every month after that,” she said.

“We’re really keen to get everyone down to support the Junction and we’re closing Arcadia Street off to traffic, to make it even better.”

Ms Pollard said the Junction monthly markets were something customers enjoyed and expected.

“We see other major shopping centres hosting regular markets and we thought it would be a perfect fit for the Junction,” she said.

“We’re expecting a minimum of 60 stalls and hoping for about 1500 to 2000 visitors.”

Ms Pollard said it had been difficult to unite the Junction business community, but she sees a positive future ahead.

Meanwhile, Noosa 5 Cinemas is in the process of changing to BCC (Birch Carroll and Coyle) Noosa Cinemas.

Noosa 5 Cinema manager Dan Spencer said nothing was changing except for the look.

“While we modernise our logos and upgrade our exterior, we’re still the same friendly staff offering you the same familiar, professional service you’re used to,” he said.

Dog owners flouting law

By JONATHON HOWARD NOOSA residents continued to reveal their horror dog attack stories this week, as complaints are being directed towards dog owners flouting the laws.

While the majority of Noosa dog owners appear to abide by the rules, such as on-leash zones and picking up dog poo, a minority of dog owners refuses to play by the rules.

Many residents are now calling on the Noosa Council to intervene and dish out a heavyhanded approach in the form of infringement notices.

Several residents said they were concerned council rangers were missing the hot spots for dog issues, in particular close to beach access points and smaller parks.

Noosaville residents Jeff and Norah Lilley were walking two small foxies, which they were minding for friends, along Gympie Terrace recently.

Mrs Lilley said she noticed a boy running along the on-leash beach with a staffy, when he allegedly let go of the lead.

“The staffy roared straight up behind us and sank his teeth into

one of the foxies,” she said.

Mrs Lilley said the noise was “spine chilling” as she tried to pry the staffy’s teeth from the besieged dog.

“We hit the dog, punched it, kicked it, and eventually, with great difficulty and several bites to myself and my husband, they were parted,” she said.

“We raced off with the poor, bleeding dog to the Noosa Animal Hospital where she was kept for treatment.

“Obviously, this cost us a lot of anguish and the owners a lot of money.

“We did contact the Noosa Council and were subsequently interviewed by an officer, however we still see dogs daily walking unleashed, and obviously the owners do not pick up after their dogs as they are not watching them.”

Mrs Lilley said it was “heartless” that people cannot take responsibility for the behaviour of their animals.

Max mix: beat that music

By JONATHON HOWARD NESTLED amid the Doonan bushland, inside a small makeshift music studio, 14-year-old Max Walker is busy mixing up his next electronic dance track.

He tells me he was 11 years old when he first started listening to music by Dead Mouse, and how he knew he’d soon be producing his own beats under the name “Ritynn”.

A mere three years later and Ritynn is now listed on the Triple J Unearthed charts, recognised by international music producers and Max has even played his first live gig.

Although this youngster is yet to experience the many wonders and perils of the world, it’s already clear to him and his family that he has a bright future ahead.

“I can still remember when I first heard electronic music - it just clicked with me instantly,” he said.

“I’d never really been interested in music, but when I heard Dead Mouse and few other artists, I was inspired.”

Triple J broadcasters have heaped praise on Ritynn, describing his sound as a fuse of bass-heavy remixes with progressive house, electro and mainroom to create a dynamic and hypnotic style of electronic dance music.

“Whether it’s his remixes of other artists, or original

“The first gig I played was at the Toowoomba Easter Festival,” Max said.

“We only had 20-30 people at the pub gig, but we pulled a bigger crowd at the Powerhouse, about 100 which was awesome.

“It’s such a good feeling playing to people and they love your music.”

Asked whether he was seeking fame, Max replied:

“Not fame but recognition”.

His parents Anthony and Karin Walker, who admitted they knew nothing about electronic music, were shocked by his talent.

“Max has always been bright and a quick learner, but he took to electronic music so well and his passion has grown ever since - we’re really supportive,” Mrs Walker said.

So while a small bush music studio may seem like a long way from the stages of big music festivals, it’s from little things that big things grow.

Birthing cries get louder NOOSA mums continue to call for a birthing centre to be built at Noosa Hospital as they reveal their harrowing stories and fears of travelling to Nambour.

“I think a birth centre model is needed for Noosa. I decided to have a home birth because I was worried about my third birth being too quick and did not want to get stuck driving to Nambour,” Tracey Browne with Mia (17 months) of Peregian Springs.

“I had Pepper at Nambour Hospital and it was a good service. However, it was stressful at times because my husband and I don’t have family locally and we had to make the trip several times.

“I would support a birthing centre in Noosa to help ease some of the travel and provide greater local health services,” Saskia Swain with Pepper (four months) of Noosa Heads.

Law rubs up against nature

By JONATHON HOWARD NOOSA Police said two complaints about public nudity at Alexandria Bay had prompted an officer to visit A-Bay and subsequently issue two infringement notices to naked beach goers recently.

Noosa Heads Police Station Senior Sergeant Steve McRight said police were obligated to follow through with any complaints.

“When police receive these complaints, we will follow through with the full extent of the law,” he said.

“In this case we, had two complaints about public nudity and our officers investigated.”

However, Snr Sgt McRight stopped short from saying whether police would begin to clamp down on A-Bay as an unofficial nudist beach.

“Where a complaint has been made police will investigate and those found to be displaying their private parts in public, will be issued with infringement notices,” he said.

WHO MADE THE COMPLAINT? ONE of the two men behind the A-Bay nudity complaint contacted Noosa Today last week, to give readers his side of the story.

The man, who did not want to be named, said he had been walking through the Noosa National Park near A-Bay, when he passed a naked man.

He said he was sick of seeing naked people around the beach and said it was time police cracked down on the unlawful act.

“It was confronting and I thought it was plain wrong,” he said.

“So I decided to inform the police about the issue, in the hope they would curb this behaviour.”

The man, who said he was in his sixties, said he did not believe there was a time or a place for public nudity.

“I am completely against it, regardless of whether it’s modest or not,” he said. “There’s no place for this in the public eye and that’s all I’d like to say.”

WHAT DO THE NUDISTS THINK? NOOSA’S self proclaimed nudists have vowed to protest any future police action on Alexandria Bay and there’s a growing push to have the beach lawfully recognised as Queensland’s first official nude beach.

Noosa Edge Nudist Retreat owner Rainer Muekenberger said the stigma building around nude beach goers was “unjustified”.

“I think you will find that the vast majority of naked A-Bay beach goers are respectable people,” he said.

“There are no issues at the beach and aside from being naked there’s really nothing out of the ordinary.”

Noosa Today spoke with several naked sun bathers at A-Bay who said they had been coming to the beach for years and never see any issues.

They have also supported a push to make A-Bay an official nude beach.

Noosa resident John Thompson said he has been visiting A-Bay for 13 years and was shocked by the news it was unlawful to go nude.

“I’m really surprised to hear that,” he said.

“Absolutely it should be legal it’s the nude beach the coast needs.”

The stunning Alexandria Bay from Hells Gates, has been Queensland's unofficial nude beach for more than 50 years.

The A-Bay nude olympics attracts hundreds, but not everyone is happy with it.

Visitors to Noosa also agreed that A-Bay was a big draw card.

David Jacobson has been visiting Noosa from New Zealand for many years and said A-Bay keeps him coming back.

"Give nudes a break at A-Bay," says nude campaigner and Noosa Edge Retreat owner Rainer Muekenberger.

“I think as long as nudists behave, then why not,” he said.

Sydneysider Phillip Rickson said Queensland could do with a nude beach.

“Every other state but Queensland

has one (officially), and I think ABay is a prime candidate,” he said.

FARMERS across Queensland may have welcomed heavy rainfall at the weekend, but Noosa motorists were cursing the wet conditions on slippery roads.

Just as the deluge had begun on Thursday, 14 August, a four car pile-up occurred at Beckmans Road about 8.15am.

Noosa Police were on the scene immediately, alongside Noosa Ambulance officers.

No-one was injured in the accident and police interviewed all four drivers and passengers to determine the cause of the accident, which was ongoing.

Two of the three vehicles required towing under the advice of police and traffic was backed up for more than an hour.

Meanwhile, the weekend saw about 30mm of rainfall across the coast and as far north as Cairns, while rough seas prevented about 1800 tourists from visiting Mooloolaba from the P&O Pacific Pearl, which instead turned back to Sydney.

But the clouds have now parted and been replaced by cool 10-14 degree mornings, with an increased chance of rain again this weekend.

Weatherzone meteorologist Ben McBurney said the low-pressure system and trough had created a unique system producing heavy rain during a normally dry month.

Mr McBurney said there was an increasing chance of showers this weekend, with temperatures expected to increase over the coming weeks.

Fire and water: a cultural history THE Cooran State School’s NAIDOC Day event was hosted by local Indigenous Artist and Educator, Peter Mulcahy and his dedicated team, who shared different elements of Indigenous culture.

Students experienced cultural stories first-hand, which were passionately delivered

by Peter Mulcahy, boomerang and spear throwing activities, Indigenous art and drawing, games and stone art/clay.

The day was made even more special with the arrival of the school’s new sports uniforms.

The two new sports houses are Ki’ra and Kung, “Fire and Water”.

These two new names respectfully acknowledge the area’s ancient Gubi Gubi cul-

tural history and language.

The unique and progressive house team jersey designs were created and donated to the school by professional artist, Peter Murray Djeripi Mulcahy.

The Ki’ra fire design includes imagery of the stars (great fires in the sky), lightning and the red and yellow flames (fire, light, security, warmth).

Peter’s representation of Kung (water) includes the symbol of falling rain, the circular symbols of the water holes and blue and green of the deep flowing water (the sustainer and life giver).

The Cooran State School community has undertaken a commitment to ensure that future generations of students

learn about and respect the cultural heritage of Australia’s Indigenous people.

Cooran SS principal Michael Cookman said he was very proud of the way in which the students, staff and community had participated in NAIDOC Day activities.

“And the manner in which the school community has responded and celebrated our new school sport houses, Ki’ra and Kung,” he said.

Michael Cookman thanked Peter Mulcahy on behalf of the community for the significant amount of time and effort he put in designing such wonderful sports shirts for the students of Cooran State School.

By JOLENE OGLE WE MAY be in the midst of what some call a messy separation, but new statistics show people living in either the Noosa Council or the Sunshine Coast Council are more alike than you might think.

A new report from the Queensland Government statistician’s office, released on Sunday, compares Noosa and the Sunshine Coast’s demographic data from the 2001 census to the 2011 census, to show we all live and work alike.

According to the report, most of the statistics are within a few percentage points despite the Sunshine Coast region having 80 per cent more people living within its boundaries.

When it comes to what makes up a standard home, houses occupied by just a couple are most common in both shires, with 31.8 per cent of the Noosa population living this way and 30.3 per cent of the Sunshine Coast population.

The remaining living options - a couple with children, one-parent homes, people living with other family, share accommodation and solo living - all share similar statistics.

For both shires, people prefer to live in separate housing with 77.3 per cent of Noosans and 74.1 per cent of Sunshine Coasters living in stand-alone homes, 9.8 per cent of Noosa residents and 9.9 per cent of Sunshine Coast residents live in semi-detached homes and 10.2 per cent of Noosa locals and 12.7 per cent of Sunshine Coasters enjoy the apartment life.

When it comes to owning or renting, we are evenly spread with just about a third of both populations either renting, buying their own home or having already bought their own home.

It turns out we’re all a smart bunch with 46.9 per cent of Noosa locals holding either a certificate, advanced diploma, degree or higher, compared to 41.9 per cent of Sunshine Coast locals.

We also share similar statistics for unemployment; Noosa comes in at 7 per cent and the Sunshine Coast is at 7.1 per cent.

For those working, health care and social assistance is one of the most common profession for both shires, with 2668 workers in Noosa and 15560 workers throughout the Sunshine Coast.

As you might expect in a tourism-based town, most of Noosa’s working population, 5413 people, work in either the retail or tourism industry.

This month KoalaTracker creator Alex Harris praises a State Government decision to release sterilised female koalas back into the wild and she looks at the importance of mapping koala movements.

Farewell to a dead-end decision

By ALEX HARRIS IT is not often a government asks for help from people at the coalface of wildlife research and rescue, so for this alone the Queensland Government deserves credit.

Announced last week is a new policy to trial under research conditions, the release of sterilised females to the Noosa hinterland.

The previously flawed State Government policy saw female koalas that had been treated for chlamydia but infertile as a result, euthanised. The premise was that such koalas released into the wild of South East Queensland where safe habitat is now so limited, would be competing with breeding koalas for food and territory, putting further pressure on koala populations. So the policy was formed to terminate the lives of sterile but otherwise healthy koalas.

Credit goes to local brothers Ray and Murray Chambers who together run Sunshine Coast Koala Rescue, and Queensland Koala Crusaders who lobbied hard for the policy change.

Detail of the policy remains vague as the government seeks input from experts as to where there is safe habitat in which to release the koalas in Noosa, and how to best monitor and record the lives of these koalas once released.

Safe habitat is ideally away from the risk of car strike and pet dog attack - the hallmarks of urban habitat in which we still find koa-

las - and diseased populations. To this end, it may well rule out the Noosa National Park as a release site, despite community calls to use it.

The Noosa National Park headland section has seen too many koalas dead or euthanised due to a range of diseases, and while koalas remain in residence, the same koalas are equally as likely to be seen in the park, on Hastings Street and as far as the lookout.

Professor of Microbiology at University of the Sunshine Coast, Professor Peter Timms, has expressed interest in working with the government on selecting release sites and monitoring the koalas via GPS tracking collars.

These koalas will provide valuable evidence in terms of range, points of risk and potential future research areas that will serve further public policy development.

A member of KoalaTracker, Professor Timms is internationally renowned for his research into chlamydia, and is working on a vaccine for koalas.

We shared a panel at the university’s Imaginarium Day on 10 August, along with Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital’s Dr Amber Gillett, where we discussed the value of science and community coming together to map, research and protect koalas in the wild.

THE Cooroy Butter Factory received more than 5000 visitors during the first quarter of 2014, but the future use of the Cooroy Butter Factory is up for debate and Noosa Council is seeking fresh ideas to improve its currently “unsustainable” service model.

Noosa Council purchased the iconic red brick building on Maple Street in the 1990s and it was initially co-ordinated by a local community group, but after the group ended the building was taken over by council three years ago.

It has since been operated as a community arts hub under the title Cooroy Butter

Factory Arts Centre (BFAC) and attracts about 54 visitors per day.

However, the council’s community services director Alan (Fox) Rogers has revealed the current operational model is “simply unsustainable”.

“The Cooroy Butter Factory has a long and rich history and the council wants to talk with people about a new and sustainable future for the building,” he said.

“Unfortunately, the operational model currently in place is simply unsustainable.

“We are looking for a community partnership to identify a more cost-effective way to use and manage the space.”

One solution put to Mr Rogers was whether a Cooroy community group could take over the daily operations of the facility.

“We’re looking at a range of options and the council is open to suggestions,” he said.

Mr Rogers said that during the next few months the council would explore a range of options for the Butter Factory’s future and implement a new direction that respects community priorities.

The council will host a public workshop on Wednesday 27 August, at 6pm, to discuss the future of the factory.

Day for those left behind

By JOLENE OGLE THE annual Sunshine Coast Suicide Bereavement Remembrance Day will be held at Picnic Point, Maroochydore, on 13 September.

A joint initiative of community organisations, United Synergies and StandBy Response Service, the event offers a chance to remember those who have been lost through suicide in the community and to acknowledge bereaved family members, friends and associates living beyond suicide.

Jill Fisher said the event will feature guest speakers, an opportunity for people to share their stories and experiences, as well as a barbecue at the end of the day to help the community connect.

“We find people like to talk and share photos of loved ones they have lost as well as photos of themselves, because they have lived through the loss,” she said.

“Hope is infectious.”

The StandBy Response Service was established in 2002 as a community organisation dedicated to post-prevention; helping those who

have been affected by or are bereaved by suicide in anyway.

“Anyone can access our services,” Ms Fisher said.

“We offer a link to services and we find by being open we can link people to the different services they need.”

Since establishment, StandBy Response Service has reached across Australia with 16 regions under their care and is the only organisation of its kind offering a specialised care and referral system to anyone who has experienced suicide or loss through suicide in any way.

“We believe post-vention is prevention,” Ms Fisher said.

“What we are doing is getting to those people who could be at risk and we’re giving them a kind of antidote.

“Through helping we’re saying we’re here for you and the community cares.”

The Suicide Bereavement Prevention Day will be help on 13 September, from 10am to noon, at Picnic Point, Maroochydore.

The expert view is it’s time to pay up From page 1 Dr Koerner also claimed Sunshine Coast Water and Unitywater, partowned by SCC, had been overcharging Noosa households excessive water service charges since the amalgamation.

However, Dr Koerner said the actual figure owed to Noosa Council was closer to $40 million.

“The Treasurer and Minister for Local Government are both well aware of this rip-off, yet George Street turns a blind eye,” he said.

“The SCC owes Noosa residents

more than $40 million in actual fact.

“Despite the Boundary Commissioner’s grim predictions, the costs to Noosa ratepayers of the de-amalgamation from the SCC, was modest.

“However, both Coolum and Noosa households are still paying about $160 annually in excess of the legitimate costs for water services with the continued existence of Unitywater.”

Mr Koerner said Free Noosa was lumbered with unfair termination costs due to the excessive staff increases of the SCC since 2008, and still managed

to hold its rates at current levels.

“Not so the SCC, who have just announced rate increases of five per cent as well as wasting the $20 million collected annually in the pricing abuse of Unitywater.”

Mr Koerner questioned why Coolum and Noosa ratepayers had to bear the taxes for water? And where were the taxes being spent?

“I suspect these hidden costs are going towards the Sunshine Coast Council’s financial mismanagement of a socalled “commercial” airport that has

yet to achieve its budgeted financial performance targets; to get SCC into the commercial development business in Maroochydore; and to subsidise an inefficient and ineffective bureaucracy now called the SCC,” he said.

“Now disband Unitywater, the creature of 2008 council amalgamations, and make SCC directly accountable for the $160 in excessive annual charges built into our water bills.”

The matter was awaiting a decision from Minister for Local Government, Community Queensland Boundaries David Crisafulli MP.

LOCAL police have continued their blitz on Noosa North Shore, with 157 random breath tests and 13 tickets issued during a two-hour operation.

Twelve people were caught speeding, with one driver clocking in at more than 20km/h over the speed limit.

One ticket was issued for a defective vehicle and one ticket was issued for failing to produce a licence.

Police said they received a complaint of a nude male on the beach.

A warning was issued to a man.

Police also said a number of complaints were received in regards to hoons doing “donuts” and “wheelies” after dark.

Noosa Heads officer in charge Senior Sergeant Steve McReight said local police will increase patrols to help stop after-dark hoons tearing up the beach.

“It’s dangerous for a number of reasons. There are rocks, tides and it’s a dangerous combination in the dark,” he said.

Crash update POLICE are awaiting the results of a blood sample analysis from the 63-year-old woman who crashed into two tourists in May. The two male German nationals were hit when the woman’s car crashed through a roundabout at the intersection of Hastings Street and Noosa Parade at about 3pm on 26 May, before colliding with a tree.

Both men and the driver were taken to hospital. One man is believed to have suffered back and neck injuries while the second man is believed to have lost his leg as a result of his injuries.

It is understood police are considering charging the driver with the dangerous operation of a vehicle causing grievous bodily harm.

Plenty to consider at council

By JONATHON HOWARD A PETITION to change parking at Noosa Junction and action to stamp out graffiti, were just two of the many issues for consideration during Noosa Council’s infrastructure and services committee meeting on Monday 19 August.

The council also updated councillors on the planning and infrastructure department, community services department, regulated dog inspection program (to inspect known dangerous dogs) and the local law making process.

It was back in June when hundreds of Noosa Junction business owners and operators signed a petition to reconfigure parking along Sunshine Beach Road.

Councillors will now consider the petition with two recommendations before them: Take no action at this stage but include the investigation of the traffic impact of this proposal in the 2014/15 shire-wide traffic study.

And, advise the lead petitioner that the council considers that the potential impact of this proposal on the flow of traffic through Noosa Junction warrants a more detailed investigation as part of a shire-wide traffic study.

Councillors were also briefed on action to stamp out the illegal act of graffiti.

The report revealed that in the six months from January to June this year, graffiti removal cost Noosa Council

ratepayers $20,500.

Councillors were presented with a five steps to deter graffiti. They include prompt removal of graffiti, photographing and reporting graffiti to police, graffiti removal agreements with other agencies, participation in the Youth Justice Program and public education programs.

In other news, Noosa Council has revealed it will write to the Australian Heritage Council, advising of Noosa Council’s support for National Heritage listing for the Cooloola Region, excluding the Noosa North Shore Beachfront Caravan Park.

G20 delegates are set to discuss many of the major issues of the world in Brisbane during November, but will any visit Noosa?

By JONATHON HOWARD TOURISM Noosa is hoping delegates of the Brisbane G20 will be lured into a relaxing holiday on the coast, following intensive political discussions in November.

Tourism Noosa spokeswoman Susan Ewington told media sources

she hopes to entice the delegates along with Brisbane residents north on November 15-16.

“There’s a public holiday in Brisbane which means a long weekend, so hopefully we can attract some Brisbane residents up for that long weekend,” Ms Ewington said.

Ms Ewington said November was

a slower time for Noosa but the G20 could be just the right boost.

“I’d love to say yes (to delegations visiting) and I know there have been some discussions about trying to attract them, but obviously their schedules are pretty tight,” she said.

“We’re looking to make some deals with operators to attract Bris-

bane residents up for the three-day weekend.”

G20 media advisor Penelope Layland said Noosa had been ruled out as a G20 host destination, but she could not comment on any personal holidays the delegates might undertake.

“There are no G20 Taskforce

events planned for delegates in Noosa,” she said.

A spokesman for the G20 Taskforce told media sources that while the summit itself would be an intensive 36-hour process, international delegations would begin arriving up to 10 days before the summit and may extend their stays after it ends.

Sunshine Coast Destination Ltd (SCDL) in conjunction with Tourism and Events Queensland was filming at Noosa Main Beach and Noosa National Park on Monday, 18 August.

Working with leading advertising agency, Mojo and Taxi Production Company, the campaign was focused on the “naturally re-

freshing” branding and natural icons of the region with components shot with cutting edge drone cameras.

A sign of the times

Some Noosa signs, while helpful, are showing signs of aging, consequently business owners have backed calls for a sign review.

BUSINESS owners have backed a call for improved street and tourism signage around Noosa during the monthly Noosa Chamber of Commerce meeting last week.

Councillor Sandy Bolton raised the matter during the meeting on Tuesday,

5 August, at Noosa Civic.

Cr Bolton said Noosa Council was investigating and would eventually seek feedback on the region’s signage and how it could be improved.

Several business owners and operators said the current signs directing traffic were confusing with signs indicat-

ing the “northern beaches” and other ambiguous messages.

One business owner suggested more signage to direct traffic to Hastings Street; while others felt shopping precincts could be better served by clearer signs.

Cr Bolton said the matter had prompted a range of spir-

ited debate from residents.

“It’s clear that directional signs could be improved throughout the shire,” she said.

“Council is looking at this and other matters during its weekend meeting.”

The matter was expected to be raised by Noosa Council in the coming weeks.

By JONATHON HOWARD WHEN former Biggest Loser contestant John Morrall stepped off the plane in Sydney and was ushered to the house with 30 other very overweight people to face the judges (trainers), he was going through a roller-coaster of emotions.

“I’d hit rock bottom, had no idea about the show, in fact didn’t even know there was prize money until a day before the first casting meeting... I was very scared and nervous” he said.

“It was one of the hardest things I’d ever had to do, but here I was I’d made it this far I couldn’t turn back now.”

To John’s amazement the trainers picked him to become a part of the group, but the worst news was about to drop.

“I was soon told I could no longer win the $250,000 prize money, I could not become the Biggest Loser, I’d have to be monitored the whole time on a restricted exercise regime and my heart rate could not exceed 100BPM,” he said.

The restrictions were due to a previous suspected heart attack John had recovered from.

But inside he was coming around to the idea that now was the time to make a change.

“I knew this was it, I’d come this far and needed to get control of my life and weight so I had to give this everything I could,” he said.

“So I stuck to the rules and tried to focus on my diet to lose the weight, while still undertaking the restricted exercises.”

John would make an incredible turn around, even wowing the judges with his determination and losing 10.6 kg by the first weighin.

Today John is the franchise owner of Jetts Noosa and he’s launched his own 12-week Weight Loss Journey to change the lives of others.

“

This is something I have wanted to do for a long time and now I have the club and the motivation to make a difference in other people’s lives …

Entries are already starting to flow for the Jetts’ Noosa 12-week Journey in partnership with Noosa Today - but more are needed.

Potential contestants have to simply write to Noosa Today with a brief story outlining why they feel they should be a part of the Jetts’ 12-week Journey.

Jetts Noosa franchise owner John Morrall said the 12-week Journey was open to 24 competitors, who would be divided into four groups of six and each group would be assigned a Jetts’ personal trainer.

John said being a contestant on the Biggest Loser was one of the toughest challenges of his life.

“This is something I have wanted to do for a long time and now I

have the club and the motivation to make a difference in other people’s lives,” he said.

John said he has several special surprises for the participants.

“There will be some amazing prizes to the top three participants, but no one will be eliminated,” he said.

“I want to show others how they can work towards changing their lives.”

Participants will be required to pay a weekly fee and more details around prizes and additional details will be revealed in good time.

By JOLENE OGLE A BIG ’Right On’ to the men and women of the Christian Outreach Church, Noosaville, who came to the aid of a motorist who had broken down on the Beckman’s Road roundabout.

The woman said she had been

stuck on the roundabout for 10 minutes before anyone offered to help move her car, which had stopped in a dangerous part of the roundabout.

The team of helpers slowed approaching cars and warned them of the hazard ahead, while another helper rolled the car to a safer location.

Big hearts respond to appeal for Jack

By JONATHON HOWARD DONATIONS have started to flow for Jack Geitl but the family still has a long way to go to purchase a disabled access vehicle.

Jack was born with cerebral palsy and while he attends school daily and lives an active and happy life, his single mother Petra often struggles with Jack’s transport.

“We’re trying to raise enough funds to purchase a disabled access vehicle, so that Jack can be transported a lot easier,” she said.

The first article in Noosa Today, on Thursday 14 August, prompted Noosa local Margaret (last name withheld) to give a small but bighearted donation.

Margaret said she knows Petra and when she read the article about the family’s need, she wanted to give.

“I met Petra many years ago,” she said.

“And when I saw the article, I though it would be nice to give something.”

Petra extended her deepest gratitude for the donation.

“I’d like to thank Margaret for her contribution to help us save for a disabled access vehicle,” she said.

Feast of fashion YOUNG designers will get the chance to show off their creations at this year’s Peregian Beach Food and Fashion Fiesta.

Applied Fashion Design and Technology students Yasmin Bridges and Clare Faulds will be part of the event’s push to showcase not only local business but also local talent.

Event co-ordinator and Lions Club member Michele Lipner said it was exciting to offer local designers the chance to showcase their talent in a fashion show.

“This is exactly what we are seeking to achieve with the Food and Fashion Fiesta - to promote local businesses and what is available if people buy local,” she said.

Peregian Beach Business Association spokeswoman Nicki Jutbauge said the fashion show is designed to give event-goers a taste for this season’s spring and summer collection from local boutiques.

“Including a selection of Yasmin’s and Clare’s designs is a great opportunity to promote two distinctive up and coming young designers from the Sunshine Coast,” she said.

Yasmin, who uses sustainable and recycled materials, sees her designs not just as fashion but as a means of encouraging people to think about what they buy and consider the ethical impact of their choices.

Clare targets her designs at the woman who wants a wardrobe that is stylish, comfortable and can be quickly assembled and worn.

The Peregian Beach Food and Fashion Fiesta in on 3 September, from 11am to 2.30pm and will be held in the Peregian Beach Village Green.

For art’s sake NOOSA artists and community groups seeking opportunities to develop artistic projects are invited to apply for funding in the current round of the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF).

The Regional Arts Development Fund is a partnership between the Queensland Government and regional councils to support local arts and culture and deliver on the State Government’s Arts for all Queenslanders strategy.

RADF committee chairman Cr Frank Wilkie said that RADF offered an important opportunity for Noosa artists.

“Creativity is a natural resource in plentiful supply in the Noosa region and RADF helps artists to develop their skills and projects in ways that may not otherwise be possible for them,” he said.

Recent RADF funded projects have helped lay the groundwork for a professional theatre company, initiated photography and writing workshops in the hinterland, have assisted the installation of a collection of handcrafted wooden native birds in a community hall and have brought professional music and lighting expertise to local performing arts groups.

Council’s Community Grants project round has also recently opened. These grants are intended to help local not-for-profit incorporated organisations that need a contribution towards the funding of projects, building works and events that provide benefits to our community.

Brother and sister duo, Emily Black and Ben Jurss, launched their Noosa-based public relations company, Little Fish Media, just six months ago and already they have an impressive list of clients.

“Through our own marketing, we have clients from Bundaberg right down the coast,” Emily said.

Emily said she had always dreamed of launching a small business public relations company that would help other small businesses, and so Little Fish Media was born.

“Ben and I both have skills that we want to use to help other small business operators, the ‘mum and dad’ business owners,” she said.

The stars aligned for Ben and Emily six months ago so they

launched Little Fish Media.

Emily has a long association with the Noosa community, helping launch Noosa Today more than two years ago as deputy editor before becoming editor of Lifestyle Real Estate.

Digital media expert Ben has worked alongside some impressive industry talent including Steve Irwin for Crocodile Hunter and UKbased reality TV show, The House of Tiny Tearaways.

Together, the duo offers an impressive range of skills from copy writing to graphic design and video production.

Emily said they celebrated their first six months of business by renting an office space at the Noosa Boardroom.

“It’s a great place to meet new clients and we save on the overheads of renting a full-time office,” she said.

“We’ve had a great six months and we’re excited for many more milestone celebrations for Little Fish Media.”

Police eye on nudity IT IS truly amazing in the 21st century with the amount of crime increasing on the coast, the council struggling to get itself together after the amalgamation fiasco And so many important issues confronting us all, that our police force, which is one of the best and least corrupt in the world, could waste its time chasing nude bathers around Alexandria Bay. If it was because of a complaint then the person must have taken a lot of trouble to be offended - just to get to A Bay is a 1.5km walk, and what is it with Queensland, the only state in the country without a legalised nude beach what is our problem?

Most of the places where naturists go are far removed from regular beach spots, so even the most easily offended would have to make a determined and quite athletic effort to be “shocked” by a few naked bodies, oh please, get a life.

Despite the wintry weather a good crowd entered the Big Top for the Friday evening show. They were treated to a fun-filled program with clowns, skilled performers and awesome animals, supported by a well-drilled, energetic crew with friendly, enthusiastic people-skills and an eagle eye for safety.

Yes, it was noisy. The quiet times came when there were animals in the ring - healthy, unadorned, well groomed, synchronised beauties. Who would have thought that camels, llamas and water buffalo could do-si-do together!! There was a polite request for silence as two strikingly beautiful zebras were led into the spotlights.

New to training, presenting this pair was one of many highlights of the program.

Perhaps the best way to assess the livecircus entertainment was to watch the level of audience participation throughout. When children were invited into the ring, even the tiniest tot hustled forward excitedly.

It is a credit to see a family show that ignites enthusiasm.

Geez, given that they’ve recently spent $4.3 million of our dollars on a piece of land worth

only $800,000, I’d hate to see them do a bad job.

Please immunise WITH ONE in four people diagnosed with cancer and the high proportion of over-fifties residents in the Sunshine Coast and surrounds, I ask all parents who refuse to immunise their children to think of this. Chemotherapy destroys immunity.

Vast numbers of grandparents are caring for children and visiting childcare centres, schools and playgrounds. There is scant evidence that immunisations have any direct link to the claims of the fear-mongering few.

Ripped off MAYOR Playford is absolutely right about SCC trying to rip off the Noosa Council $20 million due to the amalgamation in 2008.

Those infrastructure contributions collected by the SCRC from the developers building in Noosa since amalgamation must be spent in Noosa and must be transferred back.

Sunshine Coast Water and Unitywater part owned by SCC have also been overcharging Noosa households more than $28 million in excessive water services charges since the amalgamation. The Treasurer and Minister for Local Government are both well aware of this monopoly service abuse, yet George Street turns a blind eye. The SCC owes Noosa residents more than $48 million in actual fact.

Sunshine from a group on the go

By JONATHON HOWARD THE Sunshine 60 and Better Group Inc has been enjoying a range of weekly activities and they would like to encourage others to join in.

Each Monday from 12.30pm, a group of about 12 older residents meet up and enjoy each other’s company while playing a few games.

The group will also have a special guest speaker from RACQ on Monday 25 August, to speak about driving for seniors.

Community liaison officer Tracey Stirton said it was important for seniors to get out and into the community, with a range of activities on offer.

“We encourage people to come along and join in some easy going group sessions while meeting new people,” she said.

Fund-raiser goes by the book MORE than 100 people gathered at a prayerflag decorated Gastons on Friday to help raise funds for girls’ education in Bhutan.

The sold out lunch helped raise $5850, and was organised by locals Krista Waddell and Heather McNeice - who will later this year trek to remote schools in the Himalayas to deliver

school supplies.

The two women have already held a soldout trivia night, and next on the fundraising list is the Summit Ball on 20 September, at the Noosa Sheraton Resort.

Aaron Waters’ landscape-inspired Avant-Garde building.

Aaron’s flight of fancy LOCAL design student Aaron Waters has taken out the top student design award at the Building Designers Association Queensland (BDAQ) awards held in Brisbane last month.

Aaron, 28, created his design, Avant-Garde, before graduating from the Sunshine Coast TAFE last year and was thrilled to win the award for his water inspired function centre.

“It is excellent to be recognised for the hours put into creating such a building,” he said.

For Aaron, it was a great chance to use his imagination to create a stunning construction with no budget.

“It was a lot of fun to work with a theoretical site.

We were given a brief and freedom to design. I wanted

to have fun with it and enjoy the open chequebook,” he said.

Aaron, who took out the student design award in 2013, designed the function building along with a sevenminute virtual walk-through tour of what the facility would look like if constructed.

Avant-Garde was designed to sit on the site of the Nambour Golf Club and features an international art gallery, convention centre, cafe and beautiful water landscapes. Large viewing decks take in the surrounding vista.

Since graduating TAFE last year, Aaron is now working with AK Building Designs in Maroochydore and hopes for a career in building design.

Geared up for growth QUEENSLAND’S residential property market is gearing up for more growth heading into the Spring selling season, according to the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ).

The REIQ June Quarter 2014 Housing Market Review released last week reveals strong growth in the Southeast and stabilising regional markets.

REIQ acting CEO Antonia Mercorella said the review reflected increased buyer confidence and a sense of optimism about Queensland’s prospects for growth.

“These are the figures many vendors have been waiting for - much shorter

days on market, significantly reduced vendor discounting and increased buyer competition,” she said.

“They show key sectors of the Queensland real estate market are on a trajectory of growth, with buyers growing more confident as we head into the Spring selling season.”

Ms Mercorella said Queensland’s regional tourism and lifestyle centres, such as Cairns and Bundaberg, were emerging as hotspots for growth.

“Confidence is also rising on the Fraser Coast, where values are up 4.2 per cent in the last year,” she said.

Masks stand for freedom THE Free to Shine Masquerade Ball has been hailed a huge success on Saturday, 16 August, at the South Pacific Resort.

More than 110 people attended and wore their best masks to dance the night away.

The event also raised about $9,000 to help approximately 30 girls from Cambodia, which will help the girls get to school and pay for education support and supplies.

Organiser Jane Moxham said the event would be a huge help to those young girls living in poverty and at risk of being targeted by human traffickers in Cambodia.

Free to Shine is a humanitarian organisation and used the masquerade ball theme to symbolise those girls who remain enslaved, whose faces we don’t see.

“We believe girls should be in schools, not brothels, so all proceeds go to enrol more girls onto our scholarship program,” Mrs Moxham said.

“We’d like to thank all those residents and local businesses, who came along and supported this great cause.”

Bad boy of Dogtown checks out Life of

AS FATE would have it, at almost exactly the time last week that Stacy Peralta was confirming the rumours that legendary skater Jay Adams had died of a heart attack while surfing in Mexico, I was in a high-rise Sydney boardroom attempting to explain to a bunch of financial analysts why skaters are different from surfers.

If I’d known of his demise, I could have just pointed to Jay-Boy, who epitomised the best and worst of both cultures.

Adams was only 53, but by anyone’s assessment, he’d given it a bit of a nudge. Back in the day he was arguably the most talented (and definitely the most out-there) of the trio who put the Zephyr Skate Team on the map in Venice, California in the late 1970s and early ’80s. He, Tony “Mad Dog” Alva and Stacy Peralta were later immortalised in Peralta’s Sundance-winning documentary, “Dogtown and Z-Boys”, and still later in the dramatic version of the story starring Heath Ledger, “ The Lords of Dogtown”.

I knew all three at one point or another, but I first ran into Mad Dog before his time as a Z-Boy, when he was camped out in a luxury cabana at the Kuilima Resort on the North Shore of Oahu with the notorious surfer/playboy Bunker Spreckels, Clark Gable’s stepson and heir to the Spreckels sugar fortune. Alva couldn’t have been more than 15, Spreckels a bloated, wasted figure in his mid-20s. I dropped by for a few hours and stayed for the weirdest few days of my life. There was nothing you could imagine that wasn’t already going on within those walls. I taped Bunker’s last interview. He was dead within three weeks.

Mad Dog Alva somehow survived that induction and joined the Zephyr team. The next time I saw him a few years later, again on the North Shore, he introduced me to Jay Adams, an intense young man with a piercing stare and a bent sense of humour. They were fast becoming gods in the skate world, using an empty swimming pool in Hollywood to develop a radical new repertoire of aerial manoeuvres while photographer Craig Stecyk documented it for the skateboard mags. While Alva and Adams lived like rock stars, Peralta was the steady one. By the end of the 1980s, he was a partner in a thriving skateboard company and looking at a film career, while Mad Dog and Jay-Boy were burnt-out wrecks. Adams was convicted of assault over a gay-bashing incident in which a man died, and later became involved in the LA gang scene. By the 1990s he was addicted to heroin and meth and had about as many convictions as he had tattoos. Then Peralta’s passion to document the Z-Boys seemed to pull him back from the brink.

Adams got coherent for his appearances in the Dogtown documentary, and then played a cameo role (actor Emile Hirsch played Jay) as a bad party guest in the Lords of Dogtown ver-

Out of parole for the first time in 20 years, Adams and his wife were celebrating his freedom to travel last week at the Mexican big wave magnet of Puerto Escondido, in the company of a group of close friends that included Malibu surfer and former Z-Boy Allen Sarlo.

The reports said there were no drugs or alcohol involved, and with clean-living Sarlo present, I believe that. Adams cut a surf session short because he was feeling sick, developed chest pains during the night and died.

In a week when we’ve seen an outpouring of emotion over Robin Williams’ passing, I doubt that too many people will feel the same way about Jay Adams. But I’ll raise a glass to him.

He was bad, but boy he was good.

RASTA COMPETES! AND WINS! Professional free-surfer David Rastovich might have strayed from the purist path when he donned the contest jersey in the Maldives this month, but he impressed mightily with a free-flowing performance to take out the Four Seasons Champions Trophy at Sultans Point.

“Rasta” left California’s Taylor Knox shaking his head in the opening minutes of the final when he pounced on a set wave to post an 8.6, then quickly followed up with a 9.1. “If I knew contests could be this much fun, I probably would have been a contest guy, but I don’t think there is any other event that is like this one,” he said.

In case you’re wondering what a professional free surfer does, Rasta travels the world, searching for perfect surf and dedicating his time to environmental causes such as marine mammal conservation and preservation. It’s a dirty job, but some one has to do it.

A welcome winter warmer WINTER weather is here for a little longer, so why not make the most of the cool nights with delicious, and healthy, comfort foods.

Belmondos shares their recipe for pumpkin, spinach and feta pie served with a spiced cauliflower and pickled zucchini salad.

Pumpkin, Spinach and Feta Pie Ingredients: 1 whole Jap pumpkin 1 medium size sweet potato 1 medium size potato 2 bunches baby spinach 500g feta cheese 5 eggs 1 cup plain flour Method: 1. Cut the Jap pumpkin in half, take out the seeds then hollow out the flesh so it is around 2cm thick consistently around the whole pumpkin, 2. Chop the sweet potato and potato roughly and roast in a 170 degree oven with the scooped out pumpkin flesh, 3. Mix the hot cooked root vegetables with two bunches of baby spinach and the fetta, then set aside to cool, 4. In a bowl, combine the eggs with the flour.

Once mixed, add to the cooled pumpkin mixture, 5. Fill the scooped out pumpkin with the mixture and bake in a 170 degree oven until the outside of the pumpkin’s skin starts to give and the middle mix rises a little.

Notes: Make sure you take out the part on the

pumpkin that attaches to the vine as it draws heat away from the pumpkin and causes uneven cooking, also it will not soften and will affect the cutting when the pie is finished.

Do not salt the mix at all, the feta is usually quite salty so taste the mix before you put back into the pie shell and salt it then if you feel it needs it.

SPICED CAULIFLOWER AND PICKLED ZUCCHINI SALAD INGREDIENTS: 2 large zucchinis 20g salt Half a cauliflower A half bunch parsley, roughly chopped 100ml olive oil 2 garlic cloves, sliced Half a red chilli, chopped 1tsp curry powder Juice of half a lemon METHOD: 1. Slice the zucchini lengthways into 3mm thick strips and toss with the salt, 2. Set aside to pickle. The moisture will

come out of the zucchini. After about an hour strain and wash with water, 3. Cut the cauliflower into florets and steam, 4. Combine the cauliflower, zucchini and parsley in a bowl, 5. Add olive oil to a pan over low heat and add the garlic, chilli and curry powder, 6. When garlic is cooked through, combine hot oil mix to the cauliflower and zucchini with the lemon juice.

NOTES: Add the oil to the cauliflower and zucchini while it is still hot as the cauliflower and zucchini will take on more flavour if dressed when hot.

Rapid fire at the bowls club NOOSA HEADS BOWLS THE main event at the Noosa club last week was the all-day Thursday Rapid Fire. Four men constituted a team, playing two games of pairs and two of fours. Playing through showery conditions, the overall winners were the group of Sanday, Walsh, Brown and Dale. Second prize in the talent-laden field went to the Birt, Hughes, Moss and Bolworth combination.

Noosa ladies continued their successful pennant campaign last week when both of our sides had home games. Division 4 picked up another four points from their encounter with Buderim and Divisoin 2 scored a win in the morning over Mooloolaba, but went down narrowly in the afternoon matches.

Men’s pennant matches were cancelled on Saturday because of the rain. This Saturday will see Division 1 playing away at Caloundra, Division 3 at Mooloolaba, and Division

6 will host a visit by Club Maroochy.

Last Tuesday’s men’s pairs winners were regular NZ Visitor Brian Morrison and local Richard Foulds.

Runners-up went to George Manera and David Deane. Wednesday ladies winners were Jeanette Emery and Julie Boyer with Dawn Newton and Lis Thomson having the next highest margin.

Friday open jackpot pairs saw a win to Ian and Thelma Sanday with runners-up to Victorian visitors Brian Kent and Brian Docking from the Werribee club.

Play continues in the club mixed pairs with semi-final matches due to be decided this Sunday. Entry forms are now out for the annual mixed fours championship. - The Chalker

TEWANTIN NOOSA BOWLS THE 2014 men’s triples club championship final was played. Overnight rain made the green heavy and ensured a very close game between

All players played very well with eventual winners after 31 ends Team Moppy prevailing over Team Moss by 30-24.

Nippers know their stuff THE Sunshine Beach Nippers have been busy despite the winter season competing in state and national pool-based rescue competitions.

Twenty-five Nippers headed to the Caboolture Aquatic Centre to compete in the Queensland Pool Rescue Titles, this month.

The events are designed to simulate reallife rescue situations and to showcase the Nippers’ rescue techniques in both pool and surf situations.

In some races, Nippers have to swim 25

metres, dive down and pick up a 3kg brick from the bottom of the pool and continue to the end of the pool carrying the brick on their back, while older Nippers, Cadets or Masters swap the brick with a 65kg dummy.

It’s hard work for anyone and the Nippers excelled at the challenges bringing home a stack of medals for the Sunshine Beach Surf Club.

Swinging above his weight - of course CHRISTIAN Butterworth may only be 12 years old, but he’s shown he can play alongside the men is his home club championship at Peregian Springs Golf Club.

Played over two weekends and 72 holes, Christian showed his talent, consistency and skill to take out the 2014 Men’s Club Championship and the Junior Championship simultaneously.

His recent international experience saw Christian place third in the Future Champions World Junior Championship in the USA and give the young player some extra confidence in his latest challenge.

Peregian Springs Juniors performed exceptionally well during the championships, with Cooper Eccleston, 14, as runner-up in the Men’s Champion-

ship and Shania Herzog-Smith, 16, placing as the Ladies’ Champion for 2014.

Peregian Springs CEO Declan McCollam said the junior players demonstrated advanced mental toughness.

“They have both the skill and mental aptitude required to do very well in this sport.

“We congratulate them,” he said.

U14 Blues: The U14 Blues were up first and it was a tussle all day. They could not break Coolum. Led in the ruck all day

by Riley Modini, Noosa had good service from the middle but on occasions butchered their disposal and Coolum’s outside run was good from turnovers. Each quarter, Benji delivered the message “be accountable, shut down the

No one served the Tigers better than Captain Peter Trompf last weekend, his overall work rate and courage in slogging conditions an inspiration for his teammates. Assistant coach Tommy McKittrick gathered heaps of the footy in a nice little warm up for finals, while champion rover Caleb Isles and Dylan Dempsey were also very prominent for the Tigers.

Nathan Winter continues his solid form while defenders Mullins, Buntain and Wallace were all tight and safe restricting the Roos scoring the entire day.

Now for the real deal and I’m sure a bumper pro-Noosa crowd will be at Weyba Rd in what could be the Tigers last game at home for 2014. The reserves will also be playing the qualifying final from 11.45 am after securing a double

chance with a one point win over Maroochydore last week.

They again face up against Maroochy this Saturday and with names like Duke, Tickner, Grace, Simpson and McDonald (who have all had much Senior experience) will go into the clash with a massive chance.

I must give mention to exNoosa Tiger, Jono freeman, who was absolutely outstanding for the Brisbane Lions against the Magpies last Saturday night booting four goals in their big victory.

Well done Jono!

The boys lifted all over and all of a sudden three goals each was the score but a late lapse saw Kawana get the ball to their outside runners and get a fourth goal.

The second quarter saw more of the fanatic pace with the ball going from backline to backline in a game of defences at half time Noosa had the lead by three goals.

UNDER 7 BLUE Birthday boy Hayden Anderson put his body on the line time after time, stopping Nambour’s fast-paced attack. Taj Brumley and Asher Anderson scored plenty of tries, but Jaxon Smith stole the show with the try of the season amid a bagful of tries for the day, which earned him Player of the Match.

UNDER 9 WHITE This week the boys travelled down to play Maroochydore. After the break and a talk by coach Isaac, the Pirate boys stormed home with a wet sail, finishing the game strongly and full of running, scoring three times in the last half.

UNDER 14A Noosa U14 Gold came up against Gympie this week in very wet conditions. Tries went to Bailey, Cecil, Mason, Jack Giles, Jack Davies, and Blake which made for a good solid team win. Man of the Match this week went to Maconachy Smith.

UNDER 14B The biggest halves pairing in the comp, “Cooper” Delbridge and “Wally the King” Fredericks, steered us around the park like they had been born to be generals. “GI” Freeman was devastating from the back with blinding pace and sublime positional play. Our athletic and rangy back row of Will “Gillett”, “Aiden” Bailey and “Jhy” Thaiday threatened Kawana’s edges mercilessly. It was also great to welcome back “Darius” Jarvis from rehab.

UNDER 15 The U15s travelled to Nambour for this week’s game. It was a must win for the Noosa boys to keep a finals berth alive. With Nambour up at 18-0, the boys kept putting in and were rewarded with a late try with the score finishing 18-4.

All the boys impressed the coach and fought hard in both games today, so every player was awarded Man of the Match. IF YOU want to know how to bring 300 people at a black tie dinner to their feet clapping and cheering, just bring in Zoe Jolley as your guest speaker. However, be warned, she is only eight years of age. The above reaction occurred at the Sofitel Luxury Hotel in Brisbane on Saturday evening, and the occasion was the Annual Awards of Excellence for Surf Life Saving Queensland. Among the recipients are those who during the past season have performed rescues that are considered outstanding.

Such was the case for our little guest speaker. The rescue occurred in a place called Wild Cattle Creek, Tannum Sands and little Zoe, accompanied by her mother had gone for a paddle on her rescue board.

Suddenly she noticed a head bobbing up and down in the water and after calling out to her mother immediately paddled over to the patient. She discovered it was a small girl about

her age. “I had to struggle to get her on to the board and then when she felt OK, keep her on the board and paddle back to the beach.” For her cool head and determination, this little girl received, and rightly so, the Jack Dearlove MBE Life Saving Excellence Award for Outstanding Rescue. The presentation of the award to someone so young and the fact that Zoe and her dad Grant had flown in from Houston, Texas, U.S.A. was acknowledged by the standing ovation.

Also among the recipients was Dan Capps of the Noosa Club. For Dan the evening was twofold being awarded the Lifesaver of the Year and accepting the trophy for the Youth Development Club of the Year, an area in which he was heavily involved. A year of dedication and hard work acknowledged state wide.

The Community Program of the Year Award was also won by Noosa.

This was in acknowledgement of the work done by Steve and Nicole Mawbie with the Seahorse Nippers.

The achievements of this group are of such high standard that it is now starting to go nationwide.

Despite not winning the Team of the Year Award, the Under 17 Patrol

Competition Team from Sunshine Beach Club came in for special mention, having achieved the unbelievable of winning the Branch State and National gold medals. Incredible. Once again congratulations to coach Johanna Redwood and her team. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the award, recognising Alan Doig OAM, as a Life Member of the Surf Life Saving Association of Australia. Among the many achievements listed on his citation was his involvement in the introduction and promotion of Expired Air Resuscitation which started in 1961. Along with fellow members Earl Smith of Kirra, Bruce Campbell Metropolitan Caloundra, and Jack Dearlove Mooloolaba, they became known as the Guinea Pigs. This came about because they volunteered to be the patients in the dangerous experiments needed to prove the E.A.R. theories. More about these legends next week.

THERE’S gold in the Noosa River: maybe not the type they use in jewellery but almost as valuable to an angler, yes that right; the golden trevally have been very prevalent in the river with some sensational fish up to the 70cm mark.

For those of us with gold fever, Woods Bays has been the place where most of the action is happening with anglers finding the Keitech Easy Shiner a great choice of soft plastic to entice the gold from the river.

At the mouth of the river there have been some nice tai-

lors with some good-sized fish chasing bait around the Frying Pan area, whiting have also been in the shallows around the same area, with the best catches on the run out tide.

A little further upriver, the area around the Tewantin Harbour has been holding some great fish, this time with giant trevally.

These fish are using the hit-and-run technique, so it’s important to get that lure in nice and close to the structure.

After the recent rainfall from this week, the fresh water that is in the system should bring the jacks on the chew as they tend to feed stronger

when there is a hint of fresh in the system. Be sure to check out the deeper holes and snags between the lakes and the rock ledges around Johns Landing for your chance to tangle one of these feisty red devils.

The offshore scene hasn’t been fishing the best with the wind and the swell being up which is making things a little too difficult for most to head out.

But for those willing to brave the conditions, they were rewarded with some decent catches, quality squire, sweetlip, and the odd cobia were reported off Sunshine and Chardon’s reefs.
