New school rules By TANIA PHILLIPS THE brand-new, $11.8 million dollar state-of-the-art Wodonga Senior Secondary College building is now officially open for business and serving the needs of the school’s 1007 students. The building, which the pupils moved into straight after the school holidays, was officially opened by Victorian Minister for Education Martin Dixon MP. The new building contains 28 teaching spaces/learning studios, purpose-built for Science, Maths, English, Humanities, LOTE (Language other than English), Indonesian, Japanese and Chinese, Information Technology and Multi Media. Principal Vern Hilditch said the facilities also include an expansive library/resource centre with three computer and multi-media rooms, a 200-seat lecture theatre with state-ofthe-art audio and visual technology, staffrooms and administration. There is also a Year 12 study space with kitchen and student amenities. “We are very happy (to be in the new building) and the opening went well – the students think it’s great,” he said. “It has given the school a new lease on life.” Designed by Norris Architects the building was project managed by Bryant Alsop and constructed by Hansen Yuncken Pty Ltd, with construction starting on site on 7 March 2013. He said the new modern building was “more a young adult environment” and replaced the previous wooden framed structure which had stood for 50 years. Mr Hilditch said the students now seemed “more heavily engaged” in their new environment, which was set up for both small and large work and featured state-of-the-art multi-media and computer rooms as well as a central library, as well as a VCE centre.
