Heavy cranes clear crash site

By ANEEKA SIMONIS IT TOOK heavy cranes around 12 hours to remove a semi-trailer which crashed in Ferntree Gully on the corner of Burwood Highway and Dorset Road around 10am on Thursday 14 August. The collision happened when the driver, a 38-year-old Kilmore man, tipped the heavily loaded semi-trailer as he was turning right into Dorset Road off Burwood Highway. Ferntree Gully CFA’s Incident Controller Justin Stackpole said the 50-tonne machine was carrying three trailers which were removed within two hours, but it wasn’t until 10pm that emergency crews were able to clear the intersection entirely. The semi-trailer collided head on with a power pole, and surrounding houses and businesses were affected by the outage which occurred around 1pm “as a safety” precaution by authorities, Stackpole said. Machines were hard at work as

part of the clean-up effort, including a 130-tonne crane and three other 25-tonne cranes. Major traffic delays were experienced during the 12-hour call as police closed eastbound traffic on Burwood Highway while Dorset Road was closed to northbound traffic. Burwood Highway cafe owner, Bruce from Coffee Bar said local businesses suffered after the morning crash as customers couldn’t access shops along the strip. “No traffic could get through.” Stackpole said from the time of the hit, it took emergency crews around 1015 minutes to free the driver who was taken to Dandenong Hospital in a stable condition with minor injuries. “By the time we rocked up, we got him out in three minutes. It was a really quick extraction,” he said. More than 50 contractors worked on the site over the 12-hour call along with 30 police and three local firefighter crews.

Facelift bricks said one of the largest costs of the Master Plan for the precinct was the works for the oval. “This project is expected to be completed by the start of November and will impact our cricketers for the first two or three rounds of the season,” Mr Bakens said. “The works will include new fencing, extended and improved drainage and some improvements to what is already a good playing surface.” The extra funds raised through the buy a brick campaign will go towards a new multi-purpose building which will replace the current change rooms and social rooms.

Dandenong Ranges Community Bank chairman Peter Marke said he was proud to be part of his project. “It is a great example of what community banks are all about and how they can assist organisations to achieve their goals,” Mr Marke said. “Most clubs struggle to provide and maintain facilities on annual fees paid by platers and they get little assistance from elsewhere.” Bricks are available in four tiers. A Community brick for $300, a Silver brick for $1000, a Gold brick for $2000 and a Diamond brick for $5000. To buy a brick or for more information, contact Ian Bakens on 0412 031 021.

IT IS not the beauty of a building you should look at; it’s the construction of the foundation that will stand the test of time. Foundation members are needed to get the South Belgrave Community and Sports Precinct into shape. The South Belgrave Community and Sports Precinct Development Group has been working for seven years to give its tired and dated facilities a new lease of life. To date, the members have secured $1.85 million in funding, including $100,000 from the Dandenong Ranges Community Bank,

as well as funding from the Federal Government, Yarra Ranges Council and the community. But the group still needs to raise another $100,000 through the community and is urging residents and local businesses to buy a brick. Those who purchase a brick, will then have their names included on an honour roll naming all foundation members. As works begin on lengthening and widening the football oval next week, the Development Group has now turned its attention in fundraising the final $100,000 needed to complete the project.
