“VicRoads have been working closely with the local community, the Yarra Ranges Council, Mount Evelyn Christian School and the Yarra Views Nursery to try and address these concerns and I thank the council for commissioning the York Road School Crossing Observational Study,” Mr Mulder said.

DISABLED workers are at risk of being injured or killed if a pedestrian crossing isn’t installed outside Yarra View Nursery, according to its disability manager Karen Dettmann.

Ms Dettmann is pushing the York Road crossing as a local election issue in Mount Evelyn and is calling on Roads Minister Terry Mulder to act before it’s too late.

“We’ve been working with the Yarra Ranges Council who has been really supportive on this issue,” Ms Dettmann said.

“Through this we have also been able to work with VicRoads to reduce the speed limit along York Road and, although the traffic is slower at 60 kilometres per hour, it’s still not the answer.”

Ms Dettmann said her workers had a range of mental and physical disabilities and often couldn’t judge what was a safe distance for them to cross between moving vehicles.

“Since we really started pushing the issue we’ve had three near misses and we’ve just been lucky that no one has been injured,” she said.

“And what really gets my blood boiling is that the minister hasn’t thought it was important enough to send anyone down to check out the issue - not even a local member.”

She said seeing the problem first -hand might help Mr Mulder and his colleagues to understand the issue.

Parents and siblings are already choosing to stop workers from catching the bus home, which in turn takes away some of their independence.

“There will be an accident out there,” she said.

“It’s just a matter of time.”

Minister for Roads Terry Mulder said the government was aware of the concerns around pedestrian safety along York Road and understood the workers from the Yarra View Nursery can at times feel unsafe crossing the road to get to and from work each day.

Wine tax crackdown

By REBECCA BILLS WINE makers of the Yarra Valley learnt all they could about the wine equalisations tax (WET) on Tuesday at Rochford Winery.

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has stepped up its activities in the wine sector in a crackdown on alleged (WET) non-compliance, but leading Australian wine law firm Finlaysons has noted that many wineries are just unwittingly getting it wrong.

Finlaysons’ Wine Partner Will Taylor said while there were always

a few in the industry who might try and push the boundaries when it came to tax claims, his firm was seeing through the ATO audit process to see whether there was a number of situations where wineries had unknowingly slipped up.

“Basically, the legislation is complex for a lawyer, let alone a wine maker,” he said.

“The one thing that really concerns us is we are seeing some innocent people inadvertently slipping up in relation to the way they claim and how they calculate their tax liability.

“The WET rules are very complex, especially when you get into issues of blending at various stages of the supply chain, so it is difficult for a winemaker to ensure they are complying with the law without seeking professional advice.”

Mr Taylor said Finlaysons had seen a substantial rise in tax-related issues coming through their office.

“The Wine Makers’ Federation would like to see the wine organisation tax supporting small wine makers in the country that are doing the right thing,” he said.

“Winemakers’ Federation of Australia (WFA) chief executive Paul Evans said it was important to recognise the bulk of winemakers were doing the right thing but could benefit from speaking with experts to ensure they were fully compliant with the WET laws.

“Investing the time and effort to learn about the WET pitfalls and also what to do if you are audited is an investment in your business and is why tax, among other critical issues, has been specifically included.”

New hope for an endangered bird

By REBECCA BILLS THERE are around 100 left in the wild, and Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeaters is opening the gates to share their work with locals.Yellingbo Conservation Reserve is home to the only wild population of the helmeted honeyeaters worldwide and is usually not open to the public.

The Helmeted Honeyeater Recovery Program, Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater, Zoos Victoria and BirdLife Australia’s Threatened Bird Network are holding a workshop next month where locals can learn more about the critically endangered helmeted honeyeater and the conservation reserve.

Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeaters volunteer and member of the recovery team Sue Tardif said there were a lot of agencies and local volunteers involved in trying to keep this area as pristine as possible to ensure the survival of the special bird.

“This workshop is a chance for locals and others interested the opportunity to come, ask questions and learn about what the Department of Environment and Primary Industries alongside all the other groups involved do here,” she said.

Ms Tardif said there were less than 100 helmeted honeyeaters left in the wild and to support their breeding a supplementary feeding program had been established at the Yellingbo Conservation Reserve.

“Here at the reserve not all of the habitat is good enough to support the population of birds, so what the supplementary feeding program does is (it) ensures that the population of birds can be as healthy as possible and increase breeding success,” she said.

“Last year was one of the biggest breeding years since it started being monitored with numbers increasing substantially.”

Weighing in at three kilograms, the threeweek-old Lexie was “very calm”, and barely made a peep before having a photo taken with her mum, according to Cr McAllister.

Cr McAllister said Lexie’s first official outing was the opening of TarraWarra Museum of Art’s Biennial exhibition on Friday 15 August.

Excellence under the sun A MOUNT Evelyn company has proven it’s among the best in its industry, receiving a significant award last month.

Mark Deutschbein and Mark Fanning of iEnergytech recieved the best practice for installation award for a 99.75 kilowatt solar power system in which they went “above and beyond.” iEnergytech is an Australianowned company, and its principal business is high-quality solar photovoltaic solutions using state-of-theart German technologies.

The award was announced on 24 July at the Clean Energy Council Solar Design and Installation Awards, presented at the ReneSola Australia ATRAA Dinner as part of Clean Energy Week.

The judges said iEnergytech’s design and installation on their job was exceptional, and the testing and commission process was “well and truly above what was required.”

iEnergytech Technical director Udayan Bhanot was thrilled with the achievement.

“With about 800MW of installs completed last year, or put another way, some 30,000 systems, this is a very significant acknowledgement of the very high standard to which iEnergytech designs and installs solar PV systems,” Mr Bhanot said.

Clean Energy Council acting chief executive Kane Thornton said the solar industry was passionate about continually improving standards, and the awards were a chance to shine the spotlight on some exceptional workmanship.

“The solar industry has come a long way in the last seven years, installing well over a million solar power systems on rooftops across the country. More than 3.5 million people now live or work beneath a set of solar panels,” Mr Thornton said.

A NINE-YEAR-OLD Wesburn Junior Football Club player was taken to the Royal Children’s Hospital by air ambulance after collapsing following the under-nine game at Monbulk on Sunday.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said medics were called to the ground about 9.45am.

The Wesburn and Monbulk boys had lined up to shake hands after the under-nines game when Lockie Yates collapsed.

The scheduled under 10 and under 11 games were cancelled as paramedics cared for the boy on the ground while they waited for the air ambulance.

The spokesperson said they had no information about why the boy collapsed but that he was in a serious condition when he was flown out.

The boy’s mother Jayne Yates thanked people for their support on Facebook yesterday (Monday) saying her son had been stable through the night.

Wesburn Junior Football Club president Chris Read said the club would not comment but said the thoughts of everyone at the club were with the boy and his family.

Mr Read said as a matter of course the club had been requested to submit a report to the Dandenong Ranges Junior Football League.

Boy stable after match collapse

By KATH GANNAWAY VIETNAM veterans, many accompanied by their grandchildren, were honoured, and, in turn, honoured those who didn’t make it to veteran status, at Mount Evelyn on Sunday.

Vietnam Veterans’ Day Yarra Valley Combined Commemorative Service was hosted this year by Mount Evelyn RSL. Addressing the large crowd, guest speaker Mike O’Meara, former Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) Deputy Commissioner, said it was a very different story as little as 15 years ago when what was then called Long Tan Day was commemorated at the Shrine of Remembrance.

“If it hadn’t been for the Vietnam Veterans Motorcycle Club turning up, the invited guests would have outnumbered the veterans and the public there,” he said, noting the steady increase over the years as reflected in the “marvellous turn-out”.

“Those of us here who are not veterans need to understand that that’s exactly how it should be,” he said.

“Like many who have come before us and many who will come after us, we do owe a debt to those who served.”

He spoke of the achievements in health and welfare services, saying veterans and their families would remember how tough it was in the early days to achieve recognition, but that with persistence and smart strategy

The Minister comes bearing some grants

TO HELP commemorate 100 years since Australian soldiers went to fight in World War I, the Minister for Veteran’s Affairs has allocated funding to three commemorative groups in the Casey area.

Totalling an estimated $35,000, the Rotary Club of Montrose and District, the Mount Evelyn RSL and the Dandenong Ranges Music Council will share in the grant decided by the local Centenary of Anzac Committee.

Mount Evelyn RSL will receive more than $8500 for the production of a book about Ralph Goode, a stretcher bearer who was Lilydale’s first person to enlist for WWI service.

The book, A Stretcher Bearer at War - The Ralph Goode Story, tells his life at war through recovered diary entries and letters.

Casey MP Tony Smith said it is important to share this local hero’s story of commitment to the community.

“It is a story that needs to be told so that our community of today and tomorrow can fully understand the local part of a huge national story,” he said.

The Dandenong Ranges Music Council will also receive $25,000 that will be allocated to community bands and choirs who perform at Anzac services and concerts each year.

It will also be contributed toward school workshops and a major community concert in the Casey electorate next April.

“The grant will help tell our local and national story through music including songs of the era that our soldiers heard as they were leaving for the war and as they returned home,” Mr Smith said.

The Casey Centenary of Anzac Committee was led by Ray Yates along with 10 other local residents who are involved in the community.

The minister will announce further grants allocated to the Casey electorate in the coming months.

Ms Tetlow said although it was rather strange to receive an encouragement award at the age of 82, she was very proud of her achievement.

“Malcolm and I have painted together for quite a number of years - we used to go into the city once a week for botanical illustration classes,” she said.

“I used to teach physical education and when I retired, I decided I wanted to do something more solitary so I took up painting.”

STEELS Creek artists Malcolm Calder and Jenny Tetlow have both been acknowledged for their artistic ability.

Mr Calder has taken out the top prize with best botanical art piece at the Sherbrooke Art Gallery’s annual Wild Art Show and Ms Tetlow walked away with the encouragement award at the Mont De Lancey Art Show.

Mr Calder said it was nice to win these awards as it made you feel more a part of the art community.

“But we have both entered a number of art shows over the years in different capacities and it’s nice to be recognised.”

YARRA VALLEY police officers are urging people to seek help with domestic violence, and will be opening their doors and ears to assist those in need.

Police officers from Warburton to Healesville told the Mail last week that they’re encouraging people to come forward and talk about family issues before they escalate.

Warburton Sergeant, Tom Wilkinson, said the community and police had no tolerance to domestic violence, and that police would actively help those living in fear of their partners.

He said that anyone could come to police for help, even if no incident had occurred, and that officers could listen to concerns and refer people to agencies to help resolve the situation.

“People think they’re isolated in their situation - they’re not,” he said.

“It is challenge and there’s no quick fix.

“People can approach us - we’re not just there to prosecute and process people - we’re here to assist and help.”

Healesville police Sergeant Stewart Thomson echoed Sgt Wilkinson’s remarks, and said that the door was open for people to come seeking help.

“Your home is a haven, and you should be safe at all times - that includes being safe from your partner,”

Sgt Thomson said.

“It can be very hard (to come forward), but after you take that first step, and you’ve got all the support in the world.”

Both sergeants said that agencies could keep details confidential, and that police could assist in resolving issues before they turn violent, or in filing intervention orders.

In the latest round of Victoria Police statistics, released in June, family violence incidents rose from 352 cases during the period 1 April 201231 March 2013 to 424 in the following year.

Yarra Ranges Inspector Colin McKinney said at the time that the increased statistics were a result of people having more confidence in going to the police when feeling threatened.

He said that family violence would continue to be a priority for police in the Yarra Ranges.

Veterans honoured

By KATH GANNAWAY VIETNAM veterans, many accompanied by their grandchildren, were honoured, and, in turn, honoured those who didn’t make it to veteran status, at Mount Evelyn on Sunday.

Vietnam Veterans’ Day Yarra Valley Combined Commemorative Service was hosted this year by Mount Evelyn RSL. Addressing the large crowd, guest speaker Mike O’Meara, former Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) Deputy Commissioner, said it was a very different story as little as 15 years ago when what was then called Long Tan Day was commemorated at the Shrine of Remembrance.

“If it hadn’t been for the Vietnam Veterans Motorcycle Club turning up, the invited guests would have outnumbered the veterans and the public there,” he said, noting the steady increase over the years as reflected in the “marvellous turn-out”.

The initiatives were not, however, gestures of goodwill, he said.

“They are our way of recognising their service and in some measure, of repaying the debt that we owe the 60,000 who served in Viet-

nam – those who returned, and those who did not.”

The service is an initiative of the Outer Eastern Melbourne Subbranch of the Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia, Healesville, Lilydale, Mount Evelyn, Upper Yarra, Warburton and Yarra Glen RSL Sub-branches and the National Serviceman’s Association.

Legal centre loses

By ANEEKA SIMONIS HUNDREDS of thousands of dollars are due to be pulled from a free legal service group, hitting its new office in Healesville the hardest.

Eastern Community Legal Centre (ECLC), which runs several offices in the outer east is set to lose $400,000 in Commonwealth funding under budget cuts mid next year.

A cost-saving decision announced in May, ECLC’s CEO Michael Smith says the decision will impact people who have little access to or cannot afford legal help in the Yarra Ranges.

“The Commonwealth Government has said these funding cuts won’t affect frontline services but this certainly won’t be true in our communities. The reality is that for our clients, more people will miss out on legal help,” he said.

ECLC’s Healesville office opened around six months ago with the support of the federal grant. Mr Smith said the loss of funding would mean the new service would struggle to expand and help more people in the Yarra Ranges area.

“It’s going to hit the development of service pretty hard ... we need to work on how to keep the office open,” he said.

If the office is unable to expand, Smith fears victims of family violence or similar crimes may not travel down the line to seek out legal aid.

“ECLC has been focused on expanding legal help to those most in need - the people of the Yarra Ranges, women and children experiencing family violence and vulnerable communities who find it hard to understand and access the law.

“Some might travel (into other offices in the eastern suburbs) but some might stay in a

situation they are in. Problems then tend to get worse. Early intervention is best,” he said.

The not-for-profit group which relies on state funding to operate has appealed the decision, writing to Attorney-General Department and local MPs as well as applying for other funding grants.

Mr Smith said by deserting the four-year funding agreement two years early, the government would create further strain on the justice system.

Federal Member for Casey Tony Smith said the government inherited a “massive budget deficit” when it came to power last September which meant “increased spending could not be maintained.”

He said the government had provided more than $200 million in legal aid contributions this year and was considering new funding agreements for next year.

Built by the Rotary Club of Healesville in 1964, the hall was completed in July, but officially opened in November.

Secretary, Ken Fewster, said the event was a great celebration of the group, who had grown in recent years and formed close friendships with one another.

When ‘speed’ kills TAC figures over the past five years have shown that about 37 per-cent of motorists that died on Victorian roads had drugs in their system.

And a new campaign started last week will target drivers and riders who get behind the wheel with illicit drugs in their system, including ice.

The Double Bus campaign, originally developed when booze buses became drug busses in 2006, addresses the growing issues of drug driving, with particular focus on methamphetamine use and detection.

TAC chief executive officer Janet Dore said last year that Victoria experienced its worst year for deaths involving drivers and riders with stimulants in their system.

“Nearly one in six (14.9 per cent) drivers and riders killed had a stimulant, such as ice or other amphetamines, in their system,” she said.

“That is very concerning because we know that as well as tunnel vision, dizziness and loss of concentration while driving under the influence of illicit drugs, there is often a false sense of alertness which can lead to

over confidence and the inability to make quick and good decisions.

Ms Dore said the effects of ice can impair a person’s ability to drive safely not only while under the effect of the substance but also when they are coming down in the days after taking it - which can take up to six days.

“Police tell us that many drivers are unaware that police are able to test for methamphetamines, including ice,” she said.

“The Double Bus campaign aims to challenge and change perceptions

of the effect illicit drugs have on the ability to drive and creates awareness that if you drive on drugs, including ice, you will be caught.”

Victoria Police has the right to pull drivers over at any time and test their saliva for traces of illicit drugs including THC, the active component in cannabis, as well as methamphetamines, including ice, speed and ecstasy.

The child accident prevention foundation launched its inaugural schools competition last month to help teach children the importance of wearing a helmet when they ride.

Helmets reduce the risk of moderate, serious and severe head injury by up to 74 per cent in a collision with a vehicle.

Kidsafe Victoria president Erica Edmands said it was important for bike riders not just to wear a helmet but also to make sure it is fitted correctly.

“Wearing a helmet can reduce the risk of injury or death when riding a wheeled device.

“However, a helmet won’t be effective unless it is the right size for the child and is fitted correctly.”

Backed by the TAC, the Kidsafe Victoria competition asks Victorian children to create a video or radio advertisement that helps send the message about helmet safety. But

it’s not just kids who are being taught a lesson.

Ms Edmands said that although the competition is aimed at school children, adults have a duty to model responsible behaviour to younger generations when they ride.

“It’s still important to remember that we as adults have a responsibility to role model correct behaviours and always wear a helmet when we are bike riding or using other wheeled devices.”

Competition entries opened on 21 July and will close at 4pm on 12 September.

The winners of each category will be awarded with a range of prizes at the National Kidsafe Day celebration on 21 October.

Funded by the Community Road Safety Grants Program, the initiative joins other TAC projects encouraging road safety such as the recent announcement to improve cycling and pedestrian infrastructure in the community.

Don’t slide, stay safe on icy roads WARBURTON police have issued a plea for drivers to stay safe on icy roads and mountain slopes, as winter comes toward a close.

Sergeant Tom Wilkinson told the Mail on Tuesday 12 August that police had concerns with drivers taking on icy and snow-covered roads on intense weather days.

He asked drivers to be aware of the weather at all times when driving, and said that conditions can turn from fine to fierce in a matter of minutes.

“The weather conditions can change very quickly and there’re also some people that aren’t prepared,” he said.

Sgt Wilkinson said that motorists should drive at a reasonable speed and in response to their conditions, particularly when coming down corners on mountains.

“It’s even more dangerous with ice on the roads,” he said. “(A warning) might save someone from dying or getting injured.”

Warburton’s Mount Donna Buang had been a site of concern for police, Sgt Wilkinson said, especially after a night of mayhem last month involving a number of cars.

On Wednesday 9 July, about six cars slid off of Mount Donna Buang Road between the summit and the 10mile carpark, and became bogged or were unable to drive further on the icy road.

For six hours, CFA, SES, police, ambulance, Parks Victoria, Yarra Valley and Eagle Towing worked on clearing the road and keeping those stranded at the summit warm.

Sgt Wilkinson said drivers should prepare for bad conditions when driving on mountain roads or in extreme weather, and ensure both they and their car are ready for the task.

“Some people aren’t prepared either themselves in their clothing or their vehicles aren’t suitable,” he said.

When driving on icy roads, it is recommended to allow more space between cars and to brake gently to avoid skidding.

Keeping lights on to increase visibility can also help when driving in snow or in intense rain.

By JESSE GRAHAM THE human face of asylum seekers will be front and centre at a movie fund-raiser which is to be held in Warburton next month.

Mary Meets Mohammad will be screened at the Upper Yarra Arts Centre from 2pm on Sunday 14 September as part of a fund-raiser for the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre.

Mary Meets Mohammad is a documentary which follows the opening of Tasmania’s first detention centre from the perspective of local Christian woman and knitter Mary and Muslim Afghan Hazara asylum seeker Mohammad.

Mary is strongly opposed to the asylum seekers’ arrival in the community but as her knitting club creates beanies for the detention centre’s residents, she becomes curious about the life of the detainees and visits the centre.

Event organiser Kerry Nicholas said that the movie humanises the current debates about asylum seekers

“We’re really quite remote from the places where quite a lot of activity goes on in relation to asylum seekers, so people aren’t conscious of it,” she said.

“It’s a gentle film - it raises questions, but it’s not heavy.

“It’s a process of relating, and small communities are good at relating.”

The film session is hosted by

Amnesty International’s Upper Yarra Group, which has been collecting food and materials through drop-off boxes in Warburton to donate to the ASRC’s offices in Footscray.

Entry to the fund-raiser is $10 and children under 15 receive free entry.

Musicians come to celebrate

By ANEEKA SIMONIS HEALESVILLE is saving the best for last with its massive annual music festival set to coincide with the town’s 150th anniversary celebration in November.

Now in its fifth year, the Healesville Music Festival will ensure good times and even better music over the weekend starting 14 November at various venues across the town.

The anniversary event will debut its first international artist Chris Henry with Hardcore Grass from Nashville, USA, as well as other headlining acts including We Two Thieves, acclaimed blues band the Three Kings and the welcome return of last year’s favourites, the Little Stevies.

A hallmark of the Healesville Music Festival is its focus on original songwriters which this year include renowned troubadours Liz Stringer, Fred Smith with Liz Frencham, Lucie Thorne and Hugh McDonald to name a few.

A Mexican and African rhythm will also be felt in the audience as multicultural artists Sin Frontera and Afrovival bust their groove.

Showcasing local talent, Yarra Valley favourites Engine Room, vocal quartet Balladry and Louie and the Pride will also perform, doing their hometown proud on its birthday celebration.

The festival is normally held each year in March but honing in on the festival-free time of the year and the anniversary, the weekend is sure to attract plenty of visitors.

The event is family-friendly and all profits made by the festival are channelled back into local organisations and projects to bolster the Healesville community.

Performances will be held at four venues - the Memo, Healesville RSL, the Terminus Hotel and Mocha and Lime.

Sights set for open art IT WILL be a weekend to remember when Yarra Valley Open Studios (YVOS) 2014 opens its doors next month.

Artist liaison and participating artist Ali Griffin said this year artists would be creating site-specific artwork for a group exhibition which was something that hadn’t happened before.

“I’m really excited to see what will be produced and I know it will be an incredible exhibition with some real surprises,” she said.

Oakridge Winery will be hosting the Open Studios group exhibition, which will be housed at the winery from 23 August through to 14 September and will be featured on the YVOS art-trail map.

Meanwhile, the Open Studios weekend will run from 13-14 September and blue flags will be used to signify a YVOS participating artist studio, event or venue.

Studios from Lilydale to Steels Creek, Toolangi, Healesville and Warburton will all be opening their doors for the weekend, with a range of works to explore.

Accompanying the group exhibition at Oakridge Winery, Healesville’s Memo Hall will host a second group show, called Prelim, which focuses on artists’ preliminary sketches, studies and visual diaries.

The exhibition will allow visitors to see the hours of work and research that go into a finished piece and allow them to learn more about local artists and how they work.

Yarra Valley Open Studios ambassador Zoe Warne said she is looking forward to meeting some familiar faces and getting to know the new participants for 2014.

Warburton on silver screen

By ANEEKA SIMONIS A NEW features film set in Warburton is attracting sell-out crowds and critical praise.

The debut by Australian director Kasimir Burgess, “Fell” uses the area’s forest landscape to tell a story of revenge, redemption and man’s affinity to nature.

Filmed last winter, Burgess said he and producer John Maynard could look no further than Warburton for the setting.

“We chose Warburton because it is so beautiful and epic. We filmed in places like Powelltown and Woods Point,” Burgess said.

“We veered well beyond the beaten track and discovered great textures and some of the oldest trees in Australia.”

The film is about a man named Thomas whose only daughter, Lara, is killed by a logging truck in a hit-and-run accident for which the driver, Luke, serves a fiveyear prison sentence.

Stricken with grief, Thomas moves away from his urban life and identity, moving to the remote town where Lara was killed.

Taking up work as a logger, he connives his way into working with Luke in the dangerously high treetops after his release.

Burgess said audiences had been taken aback by Warburton’s lush landscape and hoped the story might help forge a greater connection between man and nature.

“The film transports audiences to another world where they can enter a beautiful forest and live vicariously through the characters and textures.

“I hope people can take away a sense of realisation that we are part of a cycle within nature,” he said.

The 90-minute film had its first screening at the Sydney Film Festival last month and will feature to a sold-out crowd at the Melbourne International Film Festival on 15-18 August.

ACMI will also be screening the film from 21 August until 27 September. The film is available on Video on Demand (VOD) on ACMI’s website for the duration of the season, to allow all audiences the opportunity to access the film.

Almost another Avengers Starring: Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Lee Pace GUARDIANS of the Galaxy is a thrilling ride that overcomes its various story problems through a wealth of charm and flair.

When Ronan The Accuser (Lee Pace), a fanatical member of the Kree race, threatens to destroy the planet Zandar with a mysterious superweapon, American scavenger Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) joins a band of misfit outlaws to stop him.

Guardians of the Galaxy is an exciting pastiche of the space opera style and lovable rogues of Star Wars, the interplanetary politics of Star Trek, ’80s pop tunes and screwball comedy.

But it’s hard to ignore the feeling that this is basically another Avengers film, but without the sturdy multi-film foundation that film had.

Without separate tie-in films to show us the characters’ back-stories, Guardians relies on a lot of exposition to develop the characters, meaning that we get a shallower sense of their identities. This would normally be

a dealbreaker, but the actors pull through with remarkable chemistry, crackling dialogue and fun personalities.

Not all of the humour works, but the overall atmosphere is amusing and light-hearted while still achieving many moments of powerful drama and pathos. The film’s vivid, colourful style is stunning and the action is astounding.

Guardians of the Galaxy tried with mixed success to make the Avengers lightning strike twice, but taken on its own, it’s an immensely fun, vibrant and earnest experience.

Legend celebrates

Golfers enjoy a winter warmer

ON THURSDAY at the Marysville Golf Club, the nine-holers played stroke on the front nine holes and the winner was Croydon resident Roger Thomas with nett 35 followed by Geoff Ferguson with nett 37.

Geoff also won the putting competition with 13 putts.

On Saturday, while most of the men were playing in the Winter Aggregate competition, father and son Steve and Brendan Krueger from Mt Evelyn were playing the final of the individual match play event.

Congratulations to 16-year-old Brendan for beating his father on the 17th hole.

On Saturday both the men and the ladies played a stroke round for the second round of the Winter Aggregate Competition.

The men’s daily winner was Healesville resident and member Mark Bambery (26) with nett 68 on a countback from Peter Jeffery (15) who lives in Lilydale.

The ladies daily winner was Mooroolbark resident Helen Howard (22) with nett 74 and the runner up was Gail Leigh (11) with nett 77 on a countback from Rebecca Lee. The winners of the Winter Aggregate competition were Steve Coker with a combined nett score of 137 and Gail Leigh with a combined nett score of 150.

TERRY Walker played his 300th game with the Warburton Millgrove Football Club against Woori Yallock on the weekend.

Walker, nicknamed ‘Tossel’ by his team mates and coach, is captain of the Burras senior side and plays in the ruck.

The 35-year-old has played football for most of his life and has an impressive pedigree.

Walker has been awarded the Best and Fairest twice in the under18s division (1994 and 1995) and five times during his involvement in the senior club.

“Football has always been a passion of mine.

“I grew up around the game and played with my brothers,” Walker said.

Tossel began playing for the Burras’ senior side 19 years ago.

He played his first senior game in the reserves against Olinda Ferny Creek while still in the under-18s.

Walker said he always wanted to be a part of the club and considers his involvement with the Burras to

“I have always wanted to play in the side, since I was a boy,” he said.

“The football club has been my life.”

He has two brothers who have played for the side.

His brother Michael recently played his 340th game.

“I grew up around the sport. I was always playing football with my brothers,” Terry Walker said.

Burras senior club coach Brendon Woods describes Tossel as an inspiration to the club.

“Terry puts in 100 per cent.”

“He always has a crack, playing the best he possibly can every week.”

Warburton Millgrove Burras president Rodney Woods also holds Terry in high regard.

According to Woods, Walker’s team mates view him as a great mentor.

“Terry is greatly admired by his team mates and also by opposing clubs for his tireless efforts and determination.”

Terry said he enjoyed celebrating his 300th game but wasn’t pleased with the final outcome.

“It was a good day but the result was not great, unfortunately.”

“We were well in the contest but fell short against the top side by 15 points.”

On the day, Walker received congratulatory messages from AFL greats Alistair Lynch and Jonathan Brown as well as a lifetime membership with the Burras.

Walker has worked for Woods Contracting, a tree logging company, for the past seven years.

Several of his work colleagues also play for the senior Burras’ side.

He has two children with his wife Nicole, Tyson and Reece.

Running some legs around the lake ROUND seven of the Athletics Victoria XCR season was held around Lake Wendouree, Ballarat, on Saturday 16 August.

Open ages ran a gruelling 15 kilometres while the junior grades competed over five kilometres.

This was the final competition before many athletes head to Albany, Western Australia, next weekend for the Australian Cross Country Championships.

First race of the day was the fivekilometre road race contested by under 20, 18, 16 and 14 grades.

The combined start made for a fast and furious first few hundred metres.

James Laven continued his improving form to be first Yarra Rang-

es athlete to finish, completing the five kilometres in 18.09 for 11th place in his grade.

By far the most impressive performances were from the under 14 girls, led by an outstanding 18.31m

by Lily Peacock to win her grade.

Team mates Ruby Dixon (3rd), Brooke Mullins (4th) and Lee Taylor (11th) ensured a team win and all but secured the Under 14 girls XCR14 premiership.

The men’s team was led home by a much improved Michael Clarke, completing the 15km in 56.22. First woman home was Amanda Laven in excellent 1.07.19.

The second half saw Woori slowly stretch its lead as it had all the answers to Belgrave’s challenges eventually winning by a comfortable 46 points.

It now sits second on the ladder with only percentage separating it from fifth and just one game to go before finals.

Woori plays fifth placed Mount Evelyn next week in what should be a great climax to the home and away season.

This game started off even enough with scores all tied up at the first change but Wandin started to hit its straps in the second term booting 6.9 goals to three goals and really should have been further in front than the 27 point half time margin.

The second half saw Wandin really pull away as its running power was too strong for Warby to counter, it booted 12 second half goals to five to win quite easily and are looking set for a successful finals campaign.

Healesville went on a rampage in the third piling on eight goals to two behinds in the third giving it a huge lead of 72 points at the last break.

Emerald fought back in the last to hold Healesville to four goals in the last while it kicked four itself.

Gembrook wasn’t bad booting four majors itself but it was the home team that looked in control.

By half time it had stretched its lead to 44 points and just about had this game it its keeping.

The second half didn’t reach any great heights as both sides really looked as though it were going through the motions.

It was three goals apiece for the remainder of the game which secured Thornton a handy win and fourth place on the ladder which means it will play in an elimination final next week against Yarra Junction.

Seville 30.17 (197) d Yarra Junction 7.6 (48) SEVILLE has finished on top of the ladder and has sent an ominous warning to all other finals aspirants after smashing Yarra Junction to the tune of 149 points.

Seville was simply outstanding from the first bounce.

It opened up with a six goal to two behinds first quarter and then really ramped it up in the second term booting nine goals to one to be 86 points up by half time.

The second half was more dominance from Seville.

It added another 15 goals, 10 of it coming in a stunning last quarter, Nathan O’Keefe had another great day booting 10 majors to add to his seasons tally.

Seville will now have a week’s rest in the first week of finals and will take on the winner of the Yarra Glen v Powelltown clash while Yarra Junction gets another chance in an elimination final against Thornton Eildon.

Powelly booted six goals to four in the first term and then stretched that margin to 31 by half-time but did have to work hard for its lead.

Powelltown upped its work rate in the third and it paid dividends on the scoreboard.

It booted six goals to two and its lead had blown out to 59 points by the last change.

Kinglake’s D. Pywell did his best to keep his side in the game and finished the day with six of his team’s 10 goals.

The last quarter was a bit of a non-event with Powelltown booting three goals to one to win comfortably and set up a date with Yarra Glen in next week’s qualifying final while Kinglake’s season comes to an end.

Yarra Glen 19.15 (129) d Yea 9.10 (64) YARRA Glen wasn’t at its brilliant best but it still did what it had to do and still came away with a 65-point win over Yea. It started the stronger and looked every bit the winning team from the opening bounce.

It booted five goals to one to open

the game and jump out to a 28-point quarter time lead.

Yea played more accountably in the second term and made Yarra Glen work hard for its goals providing a much more even quarter with Yarra Glen scoring four goals to Yea’s three.

The second half did see Yarra pull away as its fitness came to the fore.

It added another 10 goals to five to win in reasonably comfortable fashion and set up a showdown with Powelltown next week in the qualifying final while Yea will lick its wounds over the summer and, hopefully, come back bigger and stronger in 2015.

In the second half Wandin’s quick movement with the ball was too much for Warby to handle as it added another 33 goals to 10 to win by a comfortable 31 goals.

Even though the final margin wasn’t great Olinda was never headed.

Its lead was seven goals at quarter time, nine at the half and 14 at threequarter time.

Mount Evelyn did battle it out hard in the last quarter outscoring Olinda by four goals which will give it some confidence when it meets again in two weeks.

Healesville stretched that margin out further in the last scoring 18 goals to 10 to win big.

Ambassador gets saddled up

By REBECCA BILLS SELBY local Simon Clarke has been announced as this year’s RACV Great Victorian Bike Ride ambassador.

And, as part of his duties, he will cycle with students during one day of the ride as it journeys from Albury to Lilydale.

Clarke’s riding potential was discovered on the RACV Great Victorian Bike Ride in 1998 when he rode with a school group as part of the nine-day riding and camping adventure.

At the time, Clarke was a student at Selby Primary School and had the opportunity to ride with Olympic track racing gold medallist Dean Woods who recog-

spent the last 12 years splitting his time between Melbourne and Europe.

“I basically spend February until October there (Europe) every year and come home for the off-season,” he said.

Clarke said he was really excited to be able to ride with students during this year’s ride and described it as being a little bit like going back to the future.

Bicycle Network Chief Executive Officer Craig Richards said he was extremely happy to welcome Clarke back to where it all began for him.

He said the ride was a great opportunity to take time out, get physically active and have a lot of fun.

“By the time we were about halfway into the day’s ride the rest of the school students had fallen behind and it was only Dean and I left.
