Rocky road to birthing

By JONATHON HOWARD NOOSA mothers who have experienced the nerve-wracking car ride to Nambour Hospital to give birth, are echoing calls for a birthing centre to be built at Noosa Hospital.

Their stories are harrowing to say the least, with one example of a mother who recently gave birth in her car while parked on the side of the road at the Doonan turn-off - and all because Nambour was too far away.

Others range from stressful situations driving to Nambour, or having to be rushed through the childbirth process in order to provide space for the next child to be born.

Reading the Noosa Today article last week (7 August) under the “Healthy Need” prompted Fit For Birth co-ordinator Karen Shlegeris, to phone the newspaper.

Costly break-up

By JONATHON HOWARD A CLOUD of financial questions is gathering over Noosa Council, as residents seek clarification around the total cost of de-amalgamation and greater certainty for Noosa’s financial future.

During the past week Noosa residents have switched their focus from the zero rate rise success story of the 2014-’15 Noosa budget, to questions around a request for $20 million from the Sunshine Coast Council.

Noosa Council last week called on the Sunshine Coast Council to

approve a further $20 million cash transfer.

Noosa Council claims it has unfinished business with Sunshine Coast Council in regards to determining how the joint assets and liabilities of the former regional council were split.

The matter has now been referred to the Minister for Local Government David Crisafulli, who Noosa Council said would act as the umpire after Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson slammed the move.

Speaking with local media sources, Cr Jamieson said the Sun-

shine Coast Council had already handed over $40 million since deamalgamation under advice from the Queensland Treasury Corporation.

Cr Jamieson now believes the regional council owes just $582,000 to Noosa Council.

She has heard dozens of stories from Noosa mothers who support the idea of improving Noosa Hospital with a birthing centre and easing the weight placed on Nambour Hospital.

“Women in the wider Noosa area want the option to receive maternity care and give birth to their babies closer to home,” she said.

Ms Shlegeris says she fears the drive for would-be mums will become worse once Nambour’s birthing centre is

closed in 2016, and shifted to the new Kawana Hospital.

“Currently they have a good half-hour drive or more to the private hospital at Buderim or the public hospital at Nambour,” she said.

“When the Nambour Hospital maternity unit moves to the new hospital at Kawana, the drive will be even longer.”

However, Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service Chief Executive Kevin Hegarty said separating birthing services complicated recruitment and retention of staff.

“These staff include obstetricians but also specialities supporting maternity services such as anaesthetics, paediat-

rics and neonatology,” he said.

“Private facilities care for approximately 32 per cent of deliveries for Sunshine Coast/ Gympie residents with public facilities delivering 68 per cent.”

I was forced to have Levi in the car after it was simply too far to get to Nambour. We were at the Doonan turn-off when we had to pull over and I had him there. We actually thought about going to the Noosa Hospital emergency department but the contractions were so close.

Help to keep Jack mobile

By JONATHON HOWARD THE mother of eight-year-old Jack Geitl is making a heartfelt appeal to raise funds for a disability access vehicle.

Jack has already captured the hearts of many Noosa residents, who have kicked off fund-raising, but behind the scenes the family has been fighting a silent battle to transport Jack to and from his many weekly activities.

Jack was born with cerebral palsy and while he attends school daily and lives an active and happy life, his single mother Petra often struggles with Jack’s transport.

The call for help has already prompted a response from the Noosa Tewantin RSL, Noosa Surf Lifesavings Club and the Noosa Tewantin Lions Club who have been extremely generous with time and fund-raising but more help is needed.

“We take a cab each morning to school where Jack has his electric wheelchair and is able to move more freely,” she said.

“He has a range of activities each week and sometimes we’ve been forced to take the bus, which is okay, it’s just makes things more difficult.”

Petra said she had made several appeals to local businesses to help her with saving, but no one had answered her calls.

“We’ve found a suitable vehicle and we’re already saving for it, we just need some extra help to reach our goal,” she said.

Always smiling Jack and his mother Petra Geitl need a little community help.

The family have looked at a second-hand Toyota Estima, which is a modified Tarago and allows Jack to wheel himself in and out of the vehicle with independence.

The vehicle is priced at around $30,000, which is far outside of the family’s budget.

“There’s still a long way to go, but we’re determined and hope the community can throw us a lifeline,” she said.

Castles of sand, with permit in hand

By JONATHON HOWARD THE sandcastle man Arron McCormick is back on Noosa Main Beach with his Noosa Council permit in hand.

Last Thursday Noosa Council issued a permit to the Mr McCormick, after it was revealed his permit application required some fine tuning.

Noosa Council said in a press release that it had offered a permit to Mr McCormick, who was operating a business on Noosa Main Beach.

“The permit will contain conditions which are common to other activities such as beach licences and busking,” the media release said.

Mayor Noel Playford said the permit would allow sand sculpting and receiving voluntary dona-

tions, but would not allow selling items or otherwise carrying on a business.

The council also said Mr McCormick would need to provide his own public liability insurance, just as everyone with a permit to use public land is required to do under state legislation.

Mr McCormick and his partner managed to raise the funds for the insurance, but when the couple visited Noosa Council on Monday they were told the permit had not yet be finalised.

Mayor Noel Playford said the permit took longer than usual to process.

“Mr McCormick didn’t provide the necessary details to process his application at first,” Cr Playford said.

“When he did, staff had to contact the insurance company

that provides the buskers’ public liability policy held by council.”

Mr McCormick spoke with Noosa-based Austwide Insurance Brokers director Sarah Fisher, who found him the best price and policy.

He has now been issued the council permit and he’s back on Main Beach.

Mr McCormick said he wanted to thank everyone in the Noosa community who helped and supported him over the past five weeks.

Arron was all smiles now he’s back on Noosa Main Beach with his permit in hand.

Pointer to dog issues

Dog attacks played down

A SAVAGE dog attack near Marcus Beach in June has prompted a resident to speak out about Noosa’s secret dog issues.

Richard Jordan was walking his Chinese shar-pei, “Sandy”, at the off-leash section at the northern end of Castaway Beach on 16 June about 9.30am.

He said his dog had approached another dog, believed to be a German pointer, and attempted to play with the pointer.

But within seconds the pointer had sunk its teeth into Sandy and started tearing her to shreds.

“It was an absolute nightmare,” Mr Jordan said.

Mr Jordan said he attempted to separate the two dogs and was himself bitten by the pointer.

“I realise it was likely the pointer did not mean to bite me, as I attempted to intervene, but I couldn’t stand there as Sandy was being savagely mauled,” he said.

Sandy suffered severe gouges to her neck and throat and blood was gushing from her head.

Mr Jordan suffered four puncture wounds to his right leg.

The owner of the pointer was allegedly 50 metres away from the attack when it occurred. He ran towards his dog and arrived after the dog fight, according to Mr Jordan.

“The owner (of the pointer) was apologetic and offered to drive me to the hospital and Sandy to the vet,” Mr Jordan said.

After the incident, Mr Jordan decided to approach Noosa Council to

investigate the incident, hoping to avoid a recurrence.

“Two Noosa Council rangers came to interview me about the incident and a week later they interviewed the other owner,” he said.

After a few more weeks, Mr Jordan received a letter explaining that because there were no “independent witnesses”, council would not be taking action against “either dog”, the letter read.

Mr Jordan was shocked at the suggestion that his dog was somehow in the wrong and felt the council failed to understand the situation.

He has now slammed the council for what he says is being “out of touch” with the magnitude of local dog issues.

“The majority of dog owners do the right thing in Noosa,” he said.

“But when incidents like this occur, and I understand there’s no grounds for a conviction when there is no independent witness, but the aggressive dog could at least have been monitored and assessed to avoid any future attacks.”

Mr Jordan said he also had concerns that council rangers were missing dozens of daily incidents where dog owners are breaking clearly defined laws around off-leash and onleash areas, as well as attacks which go unreported.

“I’ve walked up and down the beach for years and never once seen a ranger issue a dog infringement notice to a dog owner doing the wrong thing, despite seeing dozens of cases where the rules are clearly being broken,” he said.

“I think council is out of touch with the scale of dog issues in the

“Council officers have investigated a number of alleged dog attacks since January this year,” a Noosa Council spokesperson, who refused to be named, said.

The majority of incidents reported have been minor matters where little or no injury has occurred.

“More serious incidents have resulted in two dogs being euthanised, two being declared menacing and one declared dangerous under the provisions of the Animal Management (cats and dogs) Act 2008,” it read.

“While serious incidents are rare, a dog attack can be traumatic for the victim.

“Council urges residents to report incidents of aggressive dogs immediately and where possible include details of the dog and its owner.

“All complaints are investigated, however on some occasions involving two dogs there is insufficient evidence to establish beyond reasonable doubt who was at fault as both parties appear to contribute to the incident and there are no independent witnesses.”

Rate rise fears

By JONATHON HOWARD LONGTIME Noosa local and business owner Jeff Nuske said Noosa residents were not seeing the region’s full financial picture and he fears future rate rises are on the horizon.

Mr Nuske was a fierce campaigner against de-amalgamation for fear of losing a financially strong Sunshine Coast Council, as well as concerns about the true costs of de-amalgamation.

“Mayor Playford said prior to de-amalgamation that the total cost of the split would be less than the $13 million suggested by the Queensland Treasury Corp,” Mr Nuske said.

“His figure was initially $2 million, then $3 million and finally no more than $5 million - he even put his house on it,” Mr Nuske said.

“Well it appears we’re still dealing with the true cost today and I’d like to know when he’s handing those keys over.”

Lately, Mayor Noel Playford said that the total cost of de-amalgamation was $2.23 million. However, Mr Nuske said Noosa residents were only now starting to see the true cost of de-amalgamation, which he said was putting Noosa on a path towards financial hardship.

“I felt like Noosa had a better financial and economic future with the Sunshine Coast Council for many reasons, but not least the fact

Noosa has no revenue generating outside of local ratepayers,” he said.

Mr Nuske said Noosa Council’s economic plan did not make sense and he has urged the community and media to pressure council on its “true” financial position.

“Anyone who looks closely at the 2014-’15 Noosa Council Budget will see there’s a $22 million infrastructure’ repairs bill required this financial year, however, Noosa Council has a cash surplus of about $5 million between income/expenses, therefore it begs the question: where is this $22 million, for things such as repairs to Munna Point Bridge and maintenance coming from,” he said.

“In the interest of the Noosa community I’d like to point out that if the $20 million is required to ensure Noosa’s financial viability and it is not forthcoming, it would mean a 22 per cent rate rise for Noosa ratepayers.”

Noosa Today asked Noosa Council to clarify whether ratepayers could expect a rate rise next financial year, however the statement in this edition was all that was provided.

Before de-amalgamation, Local Government Minister David Crisafulli and Queensland Treasury Corporation warned the split would cost more than $13 million.

However, when Noosa won the vote and de-amalgamated, Mayor Noel Playford said the new council’s cost-cutting measures would reduce that figure to just $2.23 million.

In a media statement, Noosa Council said it had detailed some facts on the progress of

the transfer from the former regional council into the two separate councils of the Sunshine Coast and Noosa.

“The State Government established a process last year to determine how the joint assets and liabilities of the former regional council were to be split,” the statement read.

“Assets included funds contributed jointly by the people of the Sunshine Coast, including the Noosa community.

“The Transfer Committee, consisting of the CEOs of both Noosa and Sunshine Coast councils, had agreed on most issues by the time the committee was wound up on June 30 this year. However, eight issues were not agreed.

“Of these, three were referred to Mr Crisafulli earlier this year and decided some time ago.

“Five technical accounting issues remain to be decided by the Minister.”

Noosa Council Mayor Noel Playford said the minister would take appropriate advice, and council would abide by what was properly decided under this agreed process.

“Noosa Council will continue to act in good faith; not by putting pressure on State Government MPs, not by pre-empting the process, not through the media, and not by spreading misinformation,” Cr Playford said.

Recent statistics show that more than 97 per cent of the 372 development applications submitted to the council this year have been approved, and 59 of the 63 Material Change of Use applications were also approved.

Just 10 development applications were rejected, and among them the

controversial Noosa on Weyba development that is now before the Planning and Environment Court, and the Coles development for Noosa Junction.

Cr Wilkie said most people were aware the council was a staunch defender of Noosa’s environment and lifestyle, but this didn’t mean “we say no to all development”.

“The vast majority of applications we say yes to tend to fly under the radar because they fit comfortably within the Noosa Plan and within what the community supports as be-

ing acceptable,” he said.

While the council was unable to release further details on the approved developments before going to print, Cr Wilkie assured Noosa Today the developments that complied with the Noosa Plan also created jobs.

Cr Wilkie said the approved developments were less likely to destroy the shire’s “point of difference” in the long term.

“It’s Noosa’s low-scale built environment and its relatively wellpreserved beaches, parks, forests,

lakes and hinterland that set it apart from larger, more populated coastal centres,” he said.

“I’d suggest this is largely why Noosa’s visitor numbers remain healthy and economic returns from tourism are growing towards $1 billion annually.”

Noosa Today asked Cr Wilkie if Noosa Council may need to approve large-scale development in the future to stimulate economic and job growth.

“I’d say hopefully not,” he said.

The largest contributing factor, according to small business survey respondents, has been greater diversification, ongoing construction of the region’s major new public hospital, a housing boom and increased tourism in the three months up to 30 June.

Noosa Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland (CCIQ) president Sarah Fisher, said there was above-average performance results in the region, with general business conditions, sales and profitability improving.

“Sales and revenue increased almost 10 percentage points, with the highest level in the state (57.3) and it was the only region to report a positive profitability index

(50.5) in the June quarter,” Ms Fisher said.

“All key business performance indicators are expected to remain steady in the September quarter.”

That was a welcome improvement on the March quarter, when the Pulse Survey revealed almost every region in Queensland suffered a fall in most business indicators during the first three months of the year.

Concerns about an unstable Senate and the inability of the Federal Government to implement its controversial budget have combined to dampen business confidence across Queensland.

The new Senate - already nicknamed the Star Wars Cantina - has struck fear into the business community with its initial blocking of Carbon Tax repeal legislation and lack of support for budget measures.

Ms Fisher said confidence in the state and national economies remained positive overall, but business expectations for im-

“Short-term expectations over the next three months are modest, with neutral or marginal improvement across all key business indicators.

Crackdown on nudist beach

By JONATHON HOWARD ALEXANDRIA Bay has long been known as Noosa’s unofficial nude beach, but Noosa police were recently spotted cracking down on naked beachgoers.

Several eye-witnesses have written to Noosa Today and said they were shocked by the appearance of a police officer who started issuing infringement notices for public nudity at A-Bay late last week.

The residents said the police officer chased several nudists down the beach and even booked a nude swimmer as he exited the water.

“It appears at least one policeman has made it his mission to stop the 20 year+ unof-

ficial clothing optional status at Alexandria Bay,” wrote Woody Dass.

“In the past week a few people have been booked, while the rest scramble to get their clothes on.”

Mr Dass said the move came as a shock and that many of the nudists at A-Bay have been going there for years.

“None of the regular visitors would ever do anything offensive on the beach,” he said.

“Who has directed the police to start enforcing an antiquated law against the nudist residents of Noosa, who number in the 100s?”

A second resident, Jeanette (no last name), has also raised the matter in a letter to Noosa Today.

“Recently, a lone police officer drove down to a popular secluded beach in the National Park on a police buggy,” Jeanette wrote.

“He started booking innocent people having picnics, relaxing on their towels and going for a swim.”

Noosa Today phoned Noosa Heads police station and was directed to Senior Sergeant Steve McRight, who was unavailable at the time.

Noosa Today will be in contact with Noosa police to determine the police views and get a statement in relation to this matter.

Financial squeeze at nudist retreat

By JONATHON HOWARD NUDIST retreat owner Rainer Muekenberger said his adult party went “extremely well” last weekend, but remained worried that his finacial situation will be hampered by the need for a functions licence.

Mr Muekenberger owns Noosa Edge Nudist Retreat in Doonan and has operated his dual cottage B&B for the past three years.

But a complaint, which Mr Muekenberger believes came from Brisbane, has flagged his business as hosting swinger parties up to twice a month.

The complaint was lodged with Noosa Council, who allowed the swingers party to

“The party went extremely well, we had very nice couples who were very grateful and thanked me for being

“None of the party-goers could understand what the council was on about and made many suggestions about how to overcome this problem (which really should not exist in the first place).

“I made sure that the music was turned down by 11pm and turned completely off a little bit later.”

Mr Muekenberger said he was now appealing to his neighbours to sign a petition in support of his business.

“I myself tried to be a friendly neighbour to ensure a good community atmosphere.

It has nothing to do with commercial activities,” he said.

The matter was ongoing.

STAFF from Choices Flooring at Eenie Creek Road were shocked to witness a street pole collapse on a vehicle towing a caravan on Monday 11 August.

Choices owner Brett Williams said he was standing on the showroom floor about noon, when he saw a truck pass through the Eenie Creek Road roundabout and clip the light pole.

“The truck was turning left to enter Eenie Creek Road, when the rear wheel hit the light pole,” he said.

Police and emergency service crews had the area cleared within the hour.

Momentary act of madness AN APPRENTICE carpenter has been sentenced to 18 months probation following an attack the magistrate labelled a “dog act�.

Dominic Reece Bryham, 19, pleaded guilty on Tuesday in Noosa Magistrates Court to kicking another man in the face during a fight after

the Golden Days Festival in Coolum, November last year.

The court heard the two men engaged in “verbal banter� on the Festival courtesy bus before engaging in what Police Prosecutor Sergeant Shane Raison labelled a “consensual fight� when the bus dropped them off outside a Coolum venue.

Sgt Raison said Bryham punched the complainant in defence when the man approached him, before hitting the man up to seven more times.

Bryham was charged with assault occasioning bodily harm. Sgt Raison said the offence occurred when Bryham kicked the man in the face while he was on the ground in

an “altered state of consciousness� and “defenceless�.

The victim reported he had a broken eye socket, fractured nasal septum and contusions to the face as a result of the fight.

When sentencing, Magistrate Simon Young took into account the fact Bryham didn’t instigate the fight, but said his decision to kick the

victim in the head while on the ground was “un-Australian� and “disgraceful�. “Why you would be possessed to kick someone in the head on the ground is a mystery,� he said.

Magistrate Young said he accepted the attack was a “momentary act of madness�. “What you did was a dog act.

“I accept you agree with that,� he said. “I hope you have learnt your lesson through this experience, but I have my doubts.�

Bryham was sentenced to 18 months probation and ordered to pay $500 restitution to his victim. No conviction was recorded.

IT’S back to the drawing board for Noosa Coast Guard to develop a memorial wall for lost loved ones.

Noosa Council previously voted down a bid to construct a memorial wall at Noosa Spit, with concerns raised about the sensitive aesthetics of the location and its overall fit with Noosa.

However, councillors decided to leave a door open for the Noosa Coast Guard to explore other possible locations as it attempts to raise much needed funds for a new rescue vessel by 2021.

Noosa Coast Guard commander John Milland said he was disappointed in council’s decision, but welcomed the opportunity to explore other options. “There’s one plus that at least council is listening to our needs,� he said.

NOOSA Magistrate Simon Young has labelled a man’s attack on his ex-partner as a “serious act of domestic violence�.

Obi Obi man, Michael Peter Evans, pleaded guilty in Noosa Magistrates Court on Tuesday to attacking his former partner of 12 years in June 2013 when he returned their three children, now five, nine and 11 years, from a weekly visitation.

Evans, 33, pleaded guilty to putting the victim into a headlock and trying to choke her, after she tried to push him out the front door of the family home, before pushing the victim in the face and causing her teeth to puncture her lip.

Police Prosecutor Sergeant Shane Raison said the victim waited until February 2014 before reporting the incident and her injuries - which she had photographed using her phone at the time of the assault - because she was afraid of retribution.

The victim told police Evans had previously slapped the back of her head and

When sentencing, Magistrate Young said he accepted the incident as isolated with no other evidence put to the court to suggest other incidents had occurred in the 14 months since the assault.

Evans was sentenced to 18 months probation and a conviction was recorded.

Safeguarding children online

By JOLENE OGLE SHOCKING statistics released by the Government reveal that one in five Australian children aged between eight and 17 experience cyberbullying each year.

The research, commissioned by the Abbott Government and released at the National Centre Against Bullying conference last week, found 72 per cent of schools reported at least one incident in 2013.

Following the release of the re-

port, the Government announced $10 million of funding would be made available to help tackle cyber-bullying.

Schools will be able to share in $7.5 million to help access online safety programs, $2.4 million will be used to establish and operate the Office of the Children’s e-Safety Commissioner and $100,000 will be used to support Australian-based research and information campaigns regarding online safety.

Not-for-profit community organisations, like the Cooloola-Noosa

Life Education Association, are also helping address the growing issues of online safety and cyber-bullying.

Cooloola-Noosa Life Educations Association’s Emma Plasier said initiatives such as their Cyberwise program focus on empowering children to help them make the right choice when it comes to being online.

“Obviously in this age with digital technology, parents can’t always keep abreast of what children are up to… It’s all about (children) learning how to manage themselves,” she said.

“(Cyberwise) is about teaching children that if you do come across social media bullying or predators online then go and find an adult that you trust and feel comfortable with, whether it be a parent or a teacher.

“If you feel uncomfortable and suspect some of these issues, log off, move away and then go and speak to the right person.”

The Life Education Association, who recently received a grant from the Noosa Heads’ Commonwealth Bank to run help the Cyberwise program, has been teaching children and

young adults about life choices for more than 35 years and is currently the largest non-government provider of drug and health education to children and young people.

Ms Plasier said the Cyberwise program has been well-received by both families and teachers at the schools they visit.

“The children really engage in it, too,” she said.

“Cyber bullying is an area that the community needs to look at and deal with. This is a program to help facilitate gauging some of those issues.

Petra’s paradise

By JOLENE OGLE FROM the beautiful meadows of a small village in southern Germany to the Noosa National Park, Petra Goeltz has always indulged her deep love of nature.

Petra recalls exploring the forests that surrounded her family home where she watched spiders weave their webs, tadpoles grow in pools of water and skinks sunbath on the warm rocks.

Its little surprise then that Petra fell in love with Noosa National Park when she travelled to our piece of paradise.

It was while working for the ‘Our Region’ pages of the Sunshine Coast Environment Council’s website that Petra found herself in Noosa.

“I thoroughly enjoyed taking photographs, interviewing people, writing-up content and walking the region’s beautiful parks and bushland areas,” she said.

“One bushwalk brought me to Noosa National Park and I remember that I went into the information kiosk to ask about a small colourful bird that I had sighted.

“The lady that staffed the information hut was very friendly and knowledgeable and we quickly found the bird in one of Noosa Park Association’s reference manuals.”

Petra, who has studied a vast range of subjects including environmental policy, environmental law, business studies and animal behaviour, said she decided to become an NPA member after a few more walks in the Noosa National Park.

“There were many interesting forums, speakers, walks and other events and because I like supporting national parks and bushland areas,” she said.

Noosa Parks Association volunteer Petra Goeltz said she loves volunteering in the Noosa National Park.124464 “One day last year I entered the kiosk and asked if there were any volunteering jobs, such as weeding, and was told there was an urgent need for more volunteers to staff the information desk.”

Petra is now one of a dedicated group of volunteers who man the information kiosk, which she said is one of the best offices to work in.

“It is great to learn about the history of the park, its flora and fauna. I can use my foreign languages to help tourists with their inquiries and my colleagues are people from vastly different backgrounds.

“So, it’s a very cool volunteering job,” she said.

In January 2009 Queensland Parks and Wildlife service granted Noosa Parks Association the right to operate the Visitor Information Centre at the Noosa National Park for the following 10 years.

The gallery and information centre is staffed by NPA volunteers and is open seven days a week, from 9.15am to 4.45pm.

SUNSHINE Coast Council has hailed its flying fox dispersal methods at Cassia Wildlife Corridor a success, despite two separate attempts to disperse the flying foxes and wildlife experts claiming the dispersal would have occurred naturally following the flowering of the Melaluca flower.

In a press release Sunshine Coast Council said the Cassia Wildlife Corridor in Coolum is once again “flying fox free” following another round of dispersal actions.

Sunshine Coast Council carried out a second series of nonlethal dispersal actions from 14 to 17 July at the request of the local community.

Division 9 Councillor Stephen Robinson said there were currently no flying foxes within the corridor as a result of the recent activity.

“Around 800 to 1000 flying foxes had returned to the camp since the first round of dispersal actions ended in late May, which

was around 40 per cent of the original population,” he said.

“At the request of local residents, council performed more dispersal actions a fortnight ago and this has again achieved a positive result with all flying foxes leaving the roost.

“For the wellbeing of residents I hope that flying foxes won’t return to the corridor or that we will see a further reduction in numbers that do return.

“Of course, with any dispersal action involving flying foxes there are no guarantees of long term success and no further actions will be possible for a number of months due to flying fox breeding cycle.”

The council continues to monitor flying fox populations at the Cassia Wildlife Corridor and other known roost sites within the region to assess the outcome of management actions, including potential relocations to equally unsuitable sites.

I work with dogs all over the Sunshine Coast and I suppose the main problems are owner education around being responsible, dog training and appropriate dog etiquette.

Control is also a big issue, but that again falls under training, which is the most important aspect of owning a dog.

The training of a dog has nothing to do with the breed, but all dogs are different and require different methods of training. Training should commence straight away, from the age of a puppy, to ensure the best results.

What should dog owners do if their dog is rushing up to other dogs, or acting aggressively?

It is the owner’s responsibility to seek professional help from a trainer if their dog is behaving inappropriately. Your

dog should not be rushing up to other dogs regardless of whether your dog is friendly; the other dog may not appreciate the excitable greeting due to fear or other unknown behaviours. Instead the dog should be focused on its handler and wait for a mutual greeting from the other dog owner. This should be common sense and having respect for other dogs and their owner.

Do you think action should be taken against dog owners who fail to use a leash in onleash areas?

People should abide by the rules set as they are there for reason. I find this a great challenge when I am training dogs with behavioural problems, going to parks that are on-leash only to have dogs running off-leash at times

without owners in sight or being told that “its OK, my dog is friendly” having to quickly reply “well, this dog is in training for aggression”.

Maybe greater council officer presence will ensure people are mindful of these rules.

Did you hear about the recent dog attack involving Mr Jordan and his Shar Pei? What were your thoughts on the matter?

I have heard about it, but it’s difficult for me to say who was right or wrong - not having been there myself. However, for a dog to viciously attack another dog like that warrants an assessment of both dogs.

This is a stressful situation for everyone, but there needs to be a complete investigation to avoid it happening again.

Why sport will always prevail Benny’s

MY COLUMN today is to assure all sports and their competitors that despite the ongoing war between Sunshine Coast Council and Noosa, the Coast Sports Federation will continue its support.

Over the past few months my concern has grown while noticing councillors from both sides continually favoring their own electorates.

Sunshine Coast Sport boundaries are set by the sports themselves and not by council. Nearly all sport competitions are competitively conducted from Caboolture to Gympie, although some creep down to Redcliffe and up to Hervey Bay in lifesaving’s flood plan.

Schools, public and private, also compete within different areas, with a host of athletes playing school sport in one area and club in another.

It’s strange how there has never been a problem with the codes hosting their competition and setting guidelines for finals and grand finals based on team performance, full stop.

Sport is sometimes fierce on the field but competitors are often great mates off the field.

Take the Gympie/Noosa merge in rugby league, helping both clubs through this season.

Anyone who follows league knows these two teams were arch enemies and their yearly clashes were much anticipated, but they will lend a hand to each other when needed.

It continues to surprise me how some locals in Noosa believe they are different and Noosa is a better place to live.

Maybe they should go and watch some local sport and see how local participation on the

sporting field is left on the paddock, shaking hands on a job well done.

Win, lose or draw, it’s back to training and get ready for the next week.

Thankfully sport defines its own culture, with most clubs just battling to put teams on the fields week in and week out.

Getting back to some councilors who appear to think they are ruling the world, and arrogantly believe their decisions will change the course of history. I just wish these people could realise the problems they are creating, and sadly when they are gone in three years.

The mess they leave behind could take years to fix, and of course cost ratepayers in the long run.

Last Friday night 13 athletes were rewarded at the Sunshine Coast welcome home of our Glasgow Games athletes, the oldest being 30 from Alex Headlands and youngest 15 from Caboolture.

Eleven were women and five sports were represented.

The highlight for me was the induction into the Federation Grand Slam Legends category of Nambour’s Jim Achurch. Some 60 years ago this local farmer threw the javelin a record 277 feet at the Vancouver Commonwealth Games.

He went on to compete at the 1956 Olympic Games and represented Australia five times in Masters Tennis.

His training regime was simple: he practised throwing sugar cane on his farm in preparation for the big events.

In front of a massive crowd the Games athletes displayed their medals and their smiles as wide as the Noosa river-mouth.

The sport federation will continue to support all athletes and it’s terrific to welcome the Noosa Surf Club as our newest Platinum Sponsor for this year.

By JOLENE OGLE THEY were meant to be enjoying their retirement years as grey nomads, but Karen Chaplin and Janette Evans couldn’t resist the call of a country town post office.

Previously public servants for the Queensland government, Karen and Janette had enjoyed four years of travel around Australia before they noticed a post office for sale in a small rural location.

“We thought that might be interesting and started on a two year search for a post office that was in a location relatively close to family and in a regional area,” Karen said.

“On hearing about the Cooroy Post Office, we travelled to Cooroy to see where it was and what the town was like.”

It must have been love at first sight, with Karen and Janette beginning the intense Australia Post tender that includes screening, training and interviews before the two women could begin to operate the Cooroy Post Office.

Karen and Janette proudly opened the doors on 28 April and, along with staff Nicole Gray and Sylvia Wallis, look forward to many years serving the Cooroy community.

“We both enjoy being involved in the community and supporting local events what-

ever they may be or whenever possible,” Karen said.

Karen added that the community has shown great support to the new Post Office owners and they look forward to hearing from their customers about what services they would like to see offered.

“We ask that customers offer feedback in relation to other services they would like provided, other products they would like sold and any issues they may have,” Karen said.

Karen assures us they are very approachable and look forward to improving the services Australia Post offer and more.

PATRICIA Robinson Dunn first wrote her debut novel more than 15 years ago. But it sat collecting dust until a few years ago when, like a haunting dream, the novel wouldn’t leave her thoughts.

Ms Robinson Dunn decided to polish her work and went to find an agent to help publish her book.

But, after a sea of rejection letters from publishers, Ms Robinson Dunn was on the brink of giving up before her agent sent an email that would reinvigorate her drive to publish her novel.

“My agent said she was disappointed I was giving up,” she said.

“She emailed me at 5.19pm… before the sun had set I was designing the cover and colours for my novel,” she said.

With her passion renewed, Ms Robinson Dunn decided to publish her semi-autobiographical novel herself.

Mister Townsend’s Lion - a Baby Boomer’s Tale - tells the story of her parents, her father a Scottish ex-navy man and her mother a practical nurse and excellent baker - through the eyes of their daughter growing up in the 1950s.

The family leave behind the reminders of a post-war Britain and set sail on the Orion for a new life in the Queensland bush, where funny and charming stories of creepy crawlies and bewildering colloquial language read alongside stories of sorrow and sadness as the family settle into their new life.

Ms Robinson Dunn captures the essence of life for

‘Ten Pound Poms’ in a strange, new land where the environment can be hostile but the people friendly, and entangles the tales with joy and humour and a real warmth towards the people of the bush is evident.

Anyone who is lucky enough to enjoy a chat with Ms Robinson Dunn will see her love and enthusiasm for telling a good story and this translates into her debut novel.

Mister Townsend’s Lion was launched last week at the Riverdeck Restaurant and Bar where over 100 people gathered to welcome the latest edition to Noosa’s novel community.

“There was a really good vibe happening,” she said.

“What can I say? I was thrilled and delighted with the response and I hope it continues... all in all, my eyebrows seem to be semi-permanently lifted in surprise.”

Mister Townsend’s Lion is a heart-warming book just in time for spring reading, and is available from local bookstores.

THE Noosa District State High School musical production of Calamity Jane received great acclaim from the primary school students, parents and community members who came to see the show.

Calamity Jane was run over three nights from 7 August to 9 August and primary school students and the year eights from Noosa District SHS were treated to a matinee performance on Wednesday 6 August.

The production was a team effort with performing arts acting head of department Louize Lyle as the driving force behind the production, with the support of dance

teacher Sharon Harris.

Both teachers spent many hours after school and over weekends with the student performers in coaching, directing and trouble-shooting scenes.

The Performing Arts department showcased their staff and students’ dancing, musical and acting abilities, with music teacher Deb Tunbridge designing the musical composition and coordinating a band comprising of students and a community band.

NDSHS teachers Alarna Priestly, Nicole Elphinstone, Nicole Koinuma and Mandy McGuire took on the sewing

and design of costumes and props.

Ticket sales were organised by the Business Faculty, while Support Services head of department Tony-Leigh Sheridan manned the canteen which supplied food for the patrons.

The show was also a great success thanks to the efforts and support of the teacher aides, school janitor and cleaners.

All staff and students involved in the production of Calamity Jane are to be congratulated for such a magnificent and very professional high school musical.

LETTERS A tribute WITH reference to the proposed memorial wall as mentioned in your paper, it reminded me of a walkway around the headland of a place in WA possibly Albany on the southern coastline.

This walkway was similar to ours connecting Noosa Main Beach to the National Park. Along this walkway were plaques of pioneering families and those other local families who also played, loved and lived in that town.

It is a brilliant tribute to those families and makes the walk all that more interesting. Perhaps we could consider utilising our walkway in this manner. Suggestion only, of course.

A little exposure I CONGRATULATE Jonathon Howard on his good reporting of Hudson’s animals in the circus (Noosa Today, 7 August). Thankyou.

Lennons has the little monkey as a jockey on the pony. The act is very short, fast, unexpected and great. The pony comes from nowhere, races across the ring with the monkey sitting as cool as only monkeys can, totally unconcerned. Neither animal is compromised and I am sure they both love it.

Back to that front page. It was brilliant. I laughed and laughed and was still chuckling when I went to bed. The photo (and the name) of Rainer Muekenberger just topped it off!

This side of tourism in Noosa is never exposed. Even myself (as straight as they come) has been approached by tourists to swing. Once was at the Noosa Heads Surf Club (an activity not mentioned in Ron Lane’s column).

I was having dinner alone one Friday night, and didn’t take much notice of a group of middleaged people on a nearby table until I was invited to join them. There were five men, none attractive but passable and a short but stout lady with a gold chain around her neck attached to the name Sharon, dangling above her bosoms (not unlike a bottle of brandy). It was explained that the men were her toyboys and they were all from Brisbane, here for the Nude Olympics at A Bay. She said she had a husband and he didn’t mind.

Apart from one man of Italian descent, none had any conversation and certainly no looks.

Then I was invited to a pre-Nude Olympics Swingers party somewhere on Noosa Sound that was taking place the next night. I politely declined but she gave me her phone number anyway. On another occasion I had a German couple rent my apartment at Sunshine Beach for a week.

It was a last-minute thing, late in the day. I made up their bed with white cotton quality sheets. It seemed they were grateful and insisted I stay for dinner. He was big and attractive, good conversation and she was large and just purred. I was invited to stay with them in Germany. They wanted me to have dinner again the next night and I was to bring three bunches of asparagus. Not sure which was their greatest sin: boiling the beautiful asparagus to death (I steam very briefly etc), the large amounts of fake suntan worn at A Bay that came off on my lovely sheets or the fact that they thought I was up for swinging with them, and that my body went with the holiday apartment. German tourists and Brisbane swingers ... it’s all in the open now.

Character EASE off, EDV Lobby Group, you are losing it!

Character assassinations are not helping our locality. As a ratepayer and resident of this locality I remain unconvinced of your arguments that any change to Noosa Shire will bring any real benefits to our region.

Your last survey, whether well conducted or not, represented a very small percentage of residents in our locality. Based on statistics you provide, there are 2,574 rateable properties in the designated area you propose to affect.

Together with those renting, this conservatively represents some 7,400 eligible voters. Based on the recent biased survey EDV conducted, you supposedly are getting the support of 362 people.

This represents less than five per cent of voters. Until you can show that you have at least the majority of our population supporting any change to shire boundaries, give us all a break and do your homework first.

Then we might be prepared to listen to you.

My reading of the press and response by neighbours is that they are happy to stay with Sunshine Coast Council which is doing a good job.

Sandman I AM very disappointed to see such enforcement against A. McCormick. I myself see no harm building these beautiful sand sculptures. And the chance of someone injuring themself is extremely limited. We want to keep our tourists happy, and locals. I have seen parents with their children build sandcastles on the beach, not just main beach but all around the Noosa Shire and beyond.

Patronised IN REPLY to the very patronising secretary of the EDV group, Bob Mirans, let me clear a few things up.

Bob claims to have over 900 “active” members, and if that’s the case, can you explain to me why only 500 people responded to the survey?

Does that mean that over half of your EDV group didn’t actually bother completing the survey, or maybe those “active” members aren’t very “active” after all!

At best your group of 900 is only 15 per cent of our population, and your claim of 80 per cent support is pure fantasy!

As your EDV group paid for that survey showing 80 per cent support, they gave you what you wanted, but we all know that if you ask the right questions to the right people, you will get the answers you need.

Don’t forget, that of our population of over 6000, only four people under the age of 29 answered the survey and you are calling that a fair representation of our population.

I have been living in this area for over 20 years and run a business here, so I am in touch with a lot of local people every day and know that most of them are happy the way things are and don’t feel the need for change.

I personally don’t have a problem with the Noosa Council, but the most important thing is that Noosa Council cannot afford us, this area is way too big to maintain for the amount of rates collected.

Now, Bob, the people of the EDV area are asking questions: Who is really behind the push for splitting to Noosa? Big forces are at work here and using your group for their own agenda.

1. Is it payback for de-amalgamation?

2. Is it an extension of the biosphere?

3. A quick rates grab from a desperate Noosa Council?

4. Or the first step before extending to Peregian, Coolum, and the rest of the coast?

5. Or all of the above?

Bob, we would like real answers, and please spare us your usual propaganda “sharing the Noosa values and sense of community” blah, blah, blah ... we want the real answers and if you don’t know, ask your well-known lobbyist president Joanne Wright as I think she knows exactly what’s going on.

We’ll be waiting for your answers, as the credibility of your group depends on it.

If it turns out to be true and the Suncoast Council has spent it, the easy way out to solve the problem is to rely on the generosity of all of the residents of the coast and have a telethon. A bit like we scratched your back, now you scratch ours.

Don’t swing away I WAS disappointed that the article “Swing away” received such great coverage on the front page of Noosa Today’s 7 August edition.

Surely there are greater items of news in Noosa other than promoting this type of activity!

Shouldn’t adults be role models for the younger generation? What message does this type of activity send to them - that wife/partner swapping and promiscuity is OK? People struggling with relationship issues should be encouraged to get help and persevere in working through their issues and not, as Mr Muekenberger suggests, receive benefit from participating in parties such as these.

With so much natural beauty around us and many talented people we have tremendous opportunities to enjoy life without this type of activity being promoted so sensationally.

COMMUNITYUPDATES ReCoRdING ANd RePoRTING BIRd oBSeRvATIoNS IAN Bailey has been recording and reporting his bird observations for over 50 years. He became fascinated by bird behaviour from the early age of eight and by age 15 had recorded 115 species around his rural NSW property.

Throughout his life he has been mentored in his observations by others within the many bird watching groups to which he has belonged.

Ian now believes that his observations have been somewhat incomplete with many questions remaining unanswered. He also believes the time has come to ask the hard ques-

tions such as “What value for the future of birds can we provide by recording and reporting our sightings?” and “How can we protect what we have now in 2014?”

At Noosa Parks Association’s Friday Environment Forum on 15 August, Ian Bailey will discuss these issues and more when he is the guest speaker.

Adam’s gift is a fine example ADAM Rogers may not have been the most popular person at the annual GPS Wealth conference, but he is certainly popular with Sunshine Butterflies after donating $700 to the community organisation.

Acting as ‘fines master’ throughout the conference, Success Coach Adam collected fines ranging from $5 to $50 from anyone who was dobbed in by other conference attendees for a variety of fun misdemenours.

Over the two days, Adam and the conference attendees chipped in $700 for the charity that is working hard to raise $100,000 to buy a hobby farm to expand their therapy services.

Sunshine Butterflies founder Leanne Walsh said the race is on to raise the funds needed to buy the hobby farm when it goes up for auction on 6 September.

Local councillors Sandy Bolton and Joe Jurisevic have also lent their support to the not-for-profic organisation, donating to the charity and attending their Rock-Ability morning hosted by musician Carey Idle.

Leanne said the Sunshine Butterflies board of directors have been to inspect the hobby farm and are excited at the prospect of expanding the therapy options available to local people and their families.

Giving your pets some bite AS part of the Australian Veterinary Association’s Pet Dental Month this August, vets are encouraging pet owners to have their furry friends checked for gum disease.

With the theme, What lurks beneath: gum disease in pets often goes unnoticed; it highlights the importance of regular dental checks to prevent the serious consequences of gum disease in pets.

President of the AVA’s Australian Veterinary Dental Society Dr Rod Salter says that many pet owners don’t realise infected gums and teeth can lead to infections in the kidney, heart, and liver, and even fractured jaws.

“Plaque and tartar contain a multitude of bacteria and toxins that can spread to other parts of the body through the bloodstream,” he said.

“Annual dental check-ups and ongoing dental care can prevent some of these serious side-effects.

“Dental disease progresses in stages so it’s important it’s caught early to prevent further damage.”

Common signs of dental disease include bad breath, inflamed gums, broken teeth and in some cases a reluctance to eat.

“Some pets will require dental cleaning to minimise the risk of other infections,” Dr Salter said.

“It’s similar to human dental clean-

ing - plaque and tartar removal, checking for gum pockets, loose teeth, growths on the gum or palate, removal or treatment of diseased teeth and finally polishing. And this has to be conducted under general anaesthetic to ensure the welfare of the animal is protected.

“Good dental health means better overall health and a mouth free from pain.”

With experts predicting a bad season for paralysis ticks and fleas due to the delayed start to cooler weather and increased humidity caused by steady rainfall, many dogs and cats face the prospect of being unnecessarily exposed to harmful and worrying parasites that can, in some cases, cause death.

Media veterinarian, Dr Katrina Warren, is appealing to all dog and cat owners to pro-actively talk to a local vet about flea and paralysis ticks, the incidence levels in their region, and suitable treatments.

Teila Packman heads local band Soula.

The art of soul

By JOLENE OGLE WHEN chatting with local band Soula’s front woman Teila Packman you certainly wouldn’t expect such a rich, soulful voice to come from the petite singer.

But then again, if you saw a photo of the band, you wouldn’t expect a funky blend of soul, pop and a slight touch of heavy rock to come from the group of high school friends.

The ever-surprising Soula found themselves playing together after what they call a series of “coincidences and happy accidents”, and thank goodness they did.

The band of five - Teila with Lewis Elliott, Danny Lowrie, Kane James and Nathan Campbell - create some of the most unique music on the Coast, all laced with an infectious sound and energy that you can’t ignore.

“As soon as we began to play, it felt like we’d been playing together for months,” Teila said.

“We all bring different genres and we are all different musically.

It’s interesting to bring that together in one band; we felt we had something special and something with potential.”

“It’s always a musician’s dream to be signed, but only if the contract doesn’t interfere with our passion for writing and perform-

ing music,” she said.

“I would love to be able to quit my day job and travel to perform.”

But Soula won’t give up on their dreams anytime soon with new tracks due for release on 13 September, the same day the band will play at the Originals Music Festival, Noosa.

“Our current tracks are more on the mellow side. The new ones will be rockier,” Teila said.

Soula will perform their new tunes at Solbar, Maroochydore, tomorrow night, along with a film crew who will capture the performance as part of their next video clip.

Backers keep the vibe going

By JOLENE OGLE WE have been enjoying the chilled out vibe of Peregian Originals for almost 14 years and now, thanks to promising sponsorships deals, the concerts look set to stay.

Event organiser Marcus Pluckhahn from East Coast Originals said two local businesses had stepped up to help keep the community concerts running.

“These guys are lifesavers,” he said. “We don’t get funding so it is great to see local businesses come on board to help keep the community events going.”

John and Nicole Siljuk from Wahoo Takeaway have already supported the Peregian Originals concerts as a minor sponsor for the past 13 years, but were happy to become a major sponsor after the closure of the Peregian Beach Surf Club restaurant forced the end of a long-term sponsorship.

John said he was excited to help the event stay alive and said the concerts were great for their take-away business.

brine PHIL JARRATT I WAS in the national capital last night for the opening of “Arcadia: Sound of the Sea”, a photographic exhibition of images by my old mate John Witzig at the National Portrait Gallery.

Now, there’s a bit of smoke and mirrors here, because I’m reasonably confident that most of my readers would realise that you can’t put a newspaper of this quality together overnight, so clearly I am writing this before any of this happens. So it’s a scoop!

I was particularly thrilled to be making the long journey to a blizzardly cold Canberra in winter because the last time a photographer mate was so honoured, sadly it was posthumous. On that occasion at the National Gallery of Victoria, Phillip Adams made us laugh and we all toasted the memory of the estimable Rennie Ellis.

Last night the Wiz was with us in flesh as well as spirit, so there was a toast or two for that too, as David Marr did the honours. (Or there will be. I’d better move back to the present before I confuse myself and fall over.)

While you may not know his name, many of you will be familiar with the work of John Witzig, being the bloke who shot the famous 1966 photograph of Bob McTavish checking the surf at National Park. This iconic image has been reproduced everywhere, including in the interpretive section of the Noosa National Park itself, so I’ve chosen a favourite and lesser known image here. But John’s archive covers much more than surfers and surfing over his many decades of reportage and book design.

Witzig first published my work in the 1960s when I was still at school, then we became friends in the early 1970s when he was the cofounder and editor of Tracks magazine, and I eventually succeeded him in that job. Years later we formed a team producing corporate histories for some of Australia’s most venerable companies, the very best of these gigs being when the liquor merchants Tucker and Co paid us in vintage Bollinger champagne and we launched the book at the Sydney Opera House on the night of the Bicentennial. A memory that will last a lifetime.

Surf writer and photographer, architect and designer, Witzig has reached the pinnacle of a stellar career, and I’m so glad I was/will be there to share his moment.

Arcadia: Sounds of the Sea will be at the National Portrait Gallery until October 14, just in case you’re going down to headquarters to have a stern word to Ricky Muir, or watch Clive do donuts around Garema Place in his Roller.

WHAT’S HOT (like I’d know!)

THERE was a time in this town when I knew what was what, could pick the cool from the clueless, be seen in all the best places and rarely pay a bill. But that was then and this is now. Old bloke, white hair, just looking for the

house grog and the senior specials.

Which is why you can take it or leave it when I tell you that there is a new cool place in town that until last weekend had been off my radar, probably because I don’t get out much after dark.

Anyway, Village Bicycle at the Junction, next to Bean Drop, opposite KB’s, is worth checking out if you’re even thicker than me and don’t already know about it. Pop up chic, nice vibe, friendly folk behind the bar, say no more.

AUSSIE TITLES ROUNDUP WHAT used to be called the national titles and is now the Australian Surf Festival (wonder where they came up with that one!) has been progressing ever so slowly on the Sapphire Coast of Coffs Harbour. Last week it was the turn of the logger and longboard divisions, and as we go to press (that present/future thing again) the final results are not in, but already Noosa is covered in glory.

In the logger divisions, Noosa Malibu Club’s Wally Allan was a semi-finalist, but we hit real pay dirt in the longboard, with New Caledonia imports the Morat family producing a double bunger, with Tom making the semis in the boys’ under 18, and mum Marnie racking up a third in the women’s over 35s.

The real standout for Noosa, however, was Nic Brewer, finishing fourth in the boys’ under 18 final after some really impressive performances in challenging conditions.

The performances of all the Noosa Mal Club juniors in recent events is testament to the club’s commitment to junior development, which is really starting to pay dividends.

With Scott McGuigan’s Pee Wee Division training sessions now a part of the program, who knows how much talent will be unearthed.

Right now I reckon we have the strongest junior longboarders in the country, the best since Julian Wilson led the under 14 pack back in the late ’90s.

Moving sounds of the Middle East in Doonan A TASTE of the Middle East is coming to Doonan with NSW-based performer Noam Blat and a collective of international musicians serving up a unique performance on 23 August.

Noam Blat has been called a weaver of musical tales, a singer/songwriter beyond genre classifications.

His compositions are influenced by his Middle Eastern background and are unique, colourful and deeply moving and range from melancholic melodies and heart-opening prayer to foot-stomping world grooves.

Noam will be joined by Avishai Barnatan, former member and founder of Sheva, who will play an array of traditional woodwind instruments; Shai Shriki on the oud, an Arabic lute, and the cajon; and Laura Targett who will play the violin and viola.

Steeped in high history NESTLED at the base of Mount Cooroy is a town bustling with business, community spirit and some of the friendliest people you will meet.

More than 100 fans packed the Tigers’ clubrooms to hear former Richmond Tigers coach Tony Jewell speak as the guest of honour.

The Tewantin Noosa RSL’s Bruce Huntington and Dean Harlow were also on hand to celebrate, donating a generous $12,500 to the Tigers’ junior team to help buy jerseys and equipment for the next season.

Noosa Tigers Junior president Warren Maher said he was rapt with the support of the Tewantin Noosa RSL. “It’s fantastic,” he said.

“We can’t thank them enough. We’re rapt with their continued support.

“The RSL has supported us for many years and their main focus is helping develop junior AFL on the coast, especially Noosa,” he said.

The next senior Tigers game is at Maroochydore on 16 August.

FOR a lot of our clubs, the winter months can indeed be just as busy as our summer. Inshore Rescue Boat (I.R.B.) training and competition has been intense. As these craft are rostered on for patrol work during the summer months, their training and competition is naturally gazette for winter. At present the Noosa club is conducting training programs, and it is interesting to note that in a team of five, four are young girls aged in their late teens. When you consider the responsibility and sometimes danger involved in this type of patrol work, it speaks volumes for the type of members now joining the ranks of our organisation.

Another group that has a very busy winter schedule is the Pool Rescue teams. These are competitors who, apart from their normal competition in surf, do the still water pool rescues discipline. It is very pleasing to note that among the medal winners in the recent National Pool Rescue Championships held in Sydney, the team from the Sunshine Beach club came home with a swag of medals which, when totaled, placed them sixth overall.

When you consider there were 52 clubs competing, for a small club like Sunshine Beach this is indeed a great effort. Well done to all competitors but in particular a big well done

“What makes the results very pleasing,” said Johanna “was that we were up against some of the biggest clubs in the country. The number of competitors was almost doubled on last year. Another factor was that one of our team, Ellie Bissaker broke the

Australian record for the 100m Under 14 Manikin Tow with Finns.”

For Johanna, these results have indeed capped off a very successful season. At the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships held in Perth, her Under 17 Patrol Competition Team won the gold medal in this very prestigious event. Not only

did they win the gold but leading up to the Nationals, they also won the Branch and State thus giving them the unique achievement, a clean sweep of the three major titles.

Paddlers begin season on positive note

By JO SEARLE SEASON starts strong for Noosa Paddlers Noosa outriggers have started the OC1/OC2 racing season in fine style with positive results in the first race of the South Queensland Zone, hosted by the Bundaberg Outrigger Club.

Five Noosa paddlers participated in the race out of Burnett Heads on Saturday 2 August, with both short and long courses contested.

The short course race of 8km started with calm conditions in the Burnett River, but once the paddlers had rounded Burnett Heads into open waters they were faced with waves and windchop. Regardless of conditions, all the Noosa paddlers raced strongly and enjoyed great success.

John Goller was first across the finish line to take first in the OC1 Masters Men category and Des Mabbott who came home second won the OC1 Senior Master Men’s Division. Wendy Mabbot and

champion oc1 paddler John goller, powering around the turn buoy at the half way mark of the long course.

Rhonda Crockford won gold on their OC2 in the Golden Master Women’s division, beating other OC2 crews in younger divisions, and Pip Kay came second to the 2013 champion in the OC1 Senior Master Women’s event.

In the afternoon, both Des and John backed up

for the 16km long course, which comprised two circuits of the short course. Conditions were a bit windier which suited these two Noosa paddlers who revel in open water paddling. Des again clinched first in his category, but John, paddling against fresh competitors, was just outside the top three.

So overall, with five competitors in the regatta, Noosa paddlers achieved four wins and one second.

Nipper ranks have swelled substantially AS THE weather starts to warm up, local surf clubs come to life once more for the patrol and nipper seasons. Sunshine Beach Surf Club will have its annual sign-on days this month, 29 and 30 August.

Sunshine Beach Surf Lifesaving Club recently celebrated its 30th patrolling anniversary after it was formed when Marjorie Tripp persuaded 25 local surfers to begin the club in a tin shed. The club now has a large number of active members performing preventative actions and rescues each season and enjoying the wonderful clubhouse facilities.

With the growth of the community and the club, the need for a junior activities ‘Nippers’ program was evident, and the ‘Nippers’ first hit the beach in the 1993/94 season with 45 members. The Nipper ranks have steadily increased their number to over 190 last season, along with the program and sport achievements.

The great family atmosphere of Club Sundays remains, while at the same time the success in competition has reached new heights.

The surf club is the perfect family activity with nipper and cadet programs teaching surf safety and water confidence to the children, and adults finding pleasure in volunteering and mateship through the many family friendly social and lifesaving activities.

Perhaps the most pleasing aspect is that she has done so in the very prestigious Patrol and Champion Life Saver events. Despite not getting the publicity they deserve, these two events are what lifesaving is all about – patrolling and lifesaving.

When local parents are thinking about their children joining a surf club, our three clubs Peregian, Sunshine and Noosa have a lot to offer when it comes to coaching and training.

At Peregian we have Rod Witham whose reputation in training cadets in basic lifesaving is second to none and at Sunshine there is of course Johanna and Max Pettigrove, with Max being a well-credentialed coach in big surf swimming.

At Noosa a much bigger club, there is a coaching panel under the control of head coach Darren Mercer, former National Iron Man Champion. This consists of Clint Irwin, Sam Keelan, Omar Bakhach and David Tomba. With a panel such as this, it ensures that all disciplines, beach, boats, boards, skies and swimming are covered.

At the recent Molokai to Oahu World Paddling Marathon in Hawaii, Jordan Mercer’s win in the ladies division and Lachie Lansdown second place in the 18/29 men’s division speaks volumes for the coaching of Darren Mercer and his panel. These results show that coaching available in our three clubs is second to none.

Pomona pipped at post POMONA BOWLS THE news of the week was the excellent showing by our District Champion of Champions Elizabeth Dewhirst and Jennie Smith against Susan Williams and Nicole Williams in the Division Champion of Champions. After 4 1/4 hours of play, the score was 19-all after 21 ends. Unfortunately, the extra end did not go to Pomona going down by one shot, but everyone involved, be they players or spectators, declared it to have been an enthralling game. Better luck next year, Pomona.

The ladies Consistency competition started this week with close games on all rinks. Desley O’Neill defeated Linda McDougall, Phyllis Roebuck defeated Ruth Kelliher and Tina Camp won on forfeit from Jennie Smith as did Glenda Rohde when Gaye Bible could not play.

Men’s Div.1 improved on last week’s performance taking the points over Buderim- the overall margin was 22 shots. No such joy for Div.3 who went down on all rinks at Coolum. But, good news for Div.6, taking all 8 points from their encounter with Kawana.

COOROY BOWLS THE Cooroy Sports Hub, home of the Cooroy Community Bowls Club was in full swing on Saturday night for a private function.

The party goers who were enjoying Barefoot Bowls were disappointed when the rains came but

many have vowed to return. The venue should be fully operational in the next couple of weeks.

Touch sides in good nick under sun

By ANITA ANDERSON NEAR-PERFECT conditions was the order of the day for week two of the new season of Touch Football. The under 10s got the afternoon underway with a great mix of old hands and new talent. GSLC (boys) managed to contain the Purple Panthers this week to take the win with Jorja, Charlie and Grace having great games. In only their second game, the GSLC (girls) put up a mighty fight against the Aussie Rebels and scored a couple of great touchdowns as well.

Ben, Ellie, Bronte and Zak all played well. A drawn game at full time entertained the spectators in the match-up between Pink Storm and

Blazers with Bronte, Jenna and Zane producing outstanding efforts for their teams.

The Under 12s game between Banana Splits and GSLC (girls) also proved to be a tight tussle with the score deadlocked at the final siren. Amy, Lily and Bella all played strongly.

Devils lived up to their name and proved too strong for Purple Storm this week with Leisha, Jaidyn and Max leading the way. That Cool Team were gallant in defeat against Saints and showed their never give up attitude. Leo, Charlotte and Holly had outstanding games.

STCC (girls) took the win against NDSHS 9s with Pip, Tia and Bronte showing great skill.

Sunshine Rebels and GSLC (boys) played

a great match with GSLC being the eventual winners. Jadyn, Giverny and Tavita all had stellar games. SBSHS came out on top in a close encounter with GSLC (girls) with Coral, Jaidyn and Tayla being the standouts in the game this week. NDSHS 8s (girls) had a tough match against STCC Pansies but fought hard for the entire match. Ed, Chloe, Maya and Cooper all played well. Inferno and NDSHS 8s (mixed) proved to be a good match up with Inferno taking the win this time around. Taj, Kalen, Tom L and Mitch all gave strong performances.

The Fiona Winter/ PJ Burns Noosa Tigers celebrated champion rover Caleb ‘Cubby’ Isles 150th game with a resounding 20 goal win in cold, wet conditions, last Saturday.

To Caboolture’s credit, it was only for the later part of the final stanza where the inform Tigers were able to run, carry and score with aplomb.

Caboolture’s attack on the pill and tenacity for the most part kept their more favoured opponents honest.

The major difference between the two sides was the skill level. Noosa’s game style and way in which they were able to execute by both hand and foot was a noticeable factor between the two teams.

Noosa’s traditional rivals Maroochydore away this Saturday in a game that means little in regard to ladder positioning but a lot in regard to continuing form, confidence and pride.

Our final President’s Lunch for 2014 was held with 1980 Richmond Premiership Coach Tony Jewell having the entire 120-strong crowd in stitches with stories and flashbacks from his footy career.

Athletes share their medals THIRTEEN Commonwealth Games athletes returned home to a heroes’ welcome at the official Welcome Home Party held at the Maroochydore RSL, last Friday.

Glasgow Commonwealth Games gold medalist and Hockeyroo star Jodie Kenny was on hand to greet fans, along with 200m medalist Taylor McKeown who also spent time with locals who turned up to congratulate the returned athletes.

Australia finished second on the medal tally behind England with an impressive 49 gold, 42 silver, and 46 bronze medals.

Attention now turns to preparation for the, much closer to home, 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

By JOLENE OGLE IT was a knockout weekend for Noosa boxer, Bryce Hegarty, who not only took out the top prize at the Rising Stars fight, but then backed it up at the Pomona King of the Mountain challenge run the next day.

The 19-year-old competed in the Rising Stars Pro Am last weekend at the Queensland Equestrian Centre, Caboolture, defeating Queensland champion Billy Limov in the 75kg title fight.

Hegarty put in an impressive effort taking down the reigning champion twice and also scoring the best amateur fighter of the night award.

Hegarty trains at the Noosa Box Office under the watchful eye of boxing icon Israel Kani, who had three other students fight on the night; Peter Chiricosta, Abbie Slavin and Keana Welsh.

Following his impressive wins, Hegarty was up early to conquer the gruelling Bendigo Bank King of the Mountain Challenge in the junior division, where he landed the silver medal and was one of eight runners to gain entry into the elite ‘Sub 30 Minute Club’.

Hegarty was one of the first Australians to finish in his division so he will now have the chance to compete in the New Zealand King of the Mountain challenge later this year.

But it’s all preparation now for the energetic Noosa boxer who will next compete in the Golden Gloves boxing tournament in Brisbane in two weeks.

Windy?

Hit the river

By JACK MANGROVE IT’S been all about the river lately, with the strong winds we have been having over the last week or so, the river has come into its own.

There have been some great captures up-river with nice school jewies between the lakes and the odd winter jack hitting soft plastic as they are rolled across the bottom. Try the Deeper holes as this is where we are seeing them on the sounder, it’s just a matter of finding the lure that will do the job. The Threadybuster is one such lure; they come in a range of colours that the jewies seem to love. Further down-river the fishing has been equally good with big flathead caught around the Tewantin area all the way to the mouth.

Trevally is another fish that seems to be prolific in the river at the moment, Woods Bays and the Noosa Sound has been where the action is.

These great sports fish have been feeding on the schools of baitfish that are brought into the river with the larger tides we are having at present. Head out at sunrise and you will be rewarded with the sight of large trevally hitting bait schools on the surface, this is the perfect time to get those poppers and surface walkers out as the trevally love to ambush surface baits from underneath. Offshore things have been a little quite with the windy weather through the week, whereas the weekend anglers where rewarded with some great days, Chardon’s Reef was a real hit with nice snapper, cobia and sweetlip. Soft plastics again came into their own, with snapper taking a liking to what was on offer. The lift and drop method seems to work best with the longer curly tail plastics attracting the most attention.
