The Warburton woman was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with critical injuries to her head, a fractured leg and pelvis injuries.

The Healesville man was taken to The Alfred hospital with leg fractures and pelvis injuries.

The highway remained closed in both directions for about seven hours, while Victoria Police’s Major Collision

Unit assessed the scene and combed through debris.

Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol Leading Senior Constable Andrew Shenton said police had evidence the silver car veered into the wrong lane.

“For some reason, the silver car heading to Healesville has gone on the wrong side of the road ... and that’s the end result,” he said.

HEALESVILLE bakers have been left less than delighted after an early hours attack caused thousands of dollars of damage to a local business.

Vandals raided Healesville’s Bakers Delight between midnight and 3am on Monday 4 August and broke into the tills.

The attack left windows smashed, a screen door bent in half, $600 stolen and the shop covered in broken glass.

Franchisee Leanne Peacock said the shop was found trashed in the morning with drawers

pulled out of place and glass “everywhere”.

She said that industrial vacuums had to be brought in to clean the glass, and that the only produce the shop was able to sell on the day were the items that were already in proving ovens when the break-in happened.

“It’s more the inconvenience of the situation rather than what was taken,” she said.

“But we’re getting back on track.”

Ms Peacock said the damage overall could easily run into thousands of dollars but that the

numbers hadn’t been officially tallied up.

“There’s loss of wages, loss of income and the produce that we had to throw out - any boxes that were open or looked to be a problem,” she said.

Acting Healesville police Sergeant Richard Coulson said that police were appealing for witnesses who may have seen the break in, or any suspicious activity between Sunday 3 and Monday 4 August.

In brief Petrol thefts: man arrested POLICE have arrested a 22-year-old Healesville man in relation to petrol thefts in the industrial area of the town.

Detective Sergeant Mark Smithwick said that CCTV played an important role in the arrest, and asked residents to keep an eye out for suspicious behaviour.

Teen questioned over burglary

FOUR-MONTH-OLD lamb Panda, initially feared to have been stolen from his Yarra Junction property, has been returned safe and sound.

Found wandering the streets a few kilometres from the property last Tuesday by a passer-by, Panda’s whereabouts had been unknown since 13 July.

Owner Lyn Wilson said they were relieved to have Panda home and had their very worst fears that Panda would be fattened up for the unmentionable put to rest as he had been found looking healthy and unscathed.

Ms Wilson said the property was usually guarded by two German Shepherd dogs that were not in the paddocks on the particular night Panda went missing.

“Really, this could have happened to anyone, but the dogs usually do keep a good eye on them,” she said.

“Owners needs to keep an eye on their stock - we check ours day and night.

“If one does go missing, get in touch with the police as they really do a fantastic job as does the community in getting the word out there.”

A 19-YEAR-OLD woman has been arrested following a series of burglaries in the Upper Yarra area. She has been released, pending inquiries.

Spate of burglaries THE UPPER Yarra area has been hit hard with burglaries over the past week, with a primary school, cricket club, high school and residential properties being targeted.

Ten laptops were stolen from Hoddles Creek Primary School on 6 August not long after 2.30am. Keys to the school were also stolen.

On that same night, Launching Place Cricket Club had a television stolen.

WARBURTON Skate Park will be unveiled in just two weeks after all major works ended last week.

The skate park comes after two years of planning between the council, local young people and surrounding community groups.

Funded by the council, construction for the long-awaited $180,000 project began six weeks ago during the winter school holidays.

Brandon Abella, one of the young people instrumental in making the park possible is happy the construction ran to its eightweek timeline.

“Surprisingly, quick work has finished off a two-year long project,” he said.

THE COALITION has not ruled out matching a $2 million upgrade for Yarra Junction Primary School, after Education Minister Martin Dixon paid the school a visit.

Mr Dixon dropped in on Tuesday 29 July to inspect the grounds and talk with staff about works and potential upgrades at the school.

Seymour MP and Eildon Candidate Cindy McLeish said the visit was for the minister to talk to school staff and see the situation in the school first-hand.

The school recently called for government help, after its art room was condemned and its portable buildings were found to be sinking into the dirt.

Works to upgrade the school buildings and remove the portables are expected to cost about $2 million, and the school had made out a

case that it had not received significant assistance in 30 years.

Shadow Education Minister and Deputy Leader of the Opposition James Merlino and Eildon Candidate Sally Brennan officially promised the upgrade money if Labor was elected in November.

Ms Brennan said the matter couldn’t wait, and would be a firstpriority for her if elected.

Ms McLeish said the Coalition had not ruled out matching the election pledge, but that Mr Dixon’s visit to the school was to gauge the situation.

“Absolutely nothing is ruled out,” she said.

“The minister wanted to have a good understanding of the situation.

“So that was the purpose of the visit - to look at the best path forward.”

Give your insurance a health check ARE you getting the most out of your private health insurance?

It’s something we often get asked about.

‘Should I get extras cover for physio? How much will I be covered for? Who is the best fund to go with?

What are the waiting periods? What are my out of pocket expenses going to be?’

Whilst we can’t, and won’t, recommend any particular funds, there are tools available to help you determine which fund is the best fit for you.

1. Start to by comparing policies.

Go to the Private Health Insurance Ombudsman comparison site www.privatehealth.gov.au/dynamic/compare, enter your requirements to receive a list of funds that cover your needs.

Tip: Make sure you tick if you are eligible for restricted funds.

Industry only funds (like teachers, health, defence, health etc) are often the best performing ones for their members.

2. Do you need ancillary cover? If

you just having dental check-ups and rarely go to the physio, osteo or chiro, then don’t bother.

Do the maths yourself but it is likely you will be paying far more in premiums than you will ever receive in benefits.

Tip: Look at what benefits are gained by higher ancillary cover compared to basics.

For example, are you paying an extra $30 per month just so you can claim your custom orthotics once every few years?

3. Once you’ve narrowed down a couple of funds, you can review their performance at www.privatehealth. gov.au/dynamic/healthfundlist.

The industry average for ’benefits as a percentage of contributions’ in 2013 was 86.9 per cent.

If your fund is higher than this, then you are doing well.

Tip: the funds with the highest market share are often the worst performing in this area.

Proposed Settlement – “Kilmore East Kinglake Bushfire” Class Action Persons who sufered loss or damage as a result of the Kilmore East Kinglake Bushfire (Kilmore bushfire), which commenced on Black Saturday, 7 February 2009, should TAKE NOTICE of a PROPOSED SETTLEMENT of the “Kilmore East Kinglake Bushfire Class Action” (class action) in the Supreme Court of Victoria.

If you are, or think you might be, a person who sufered loss or damage as a result of the Kilmore bushfire, you should READ THIS NOTICE CAREFULLY as it may afect your rights.

After the conclusion of evidence and submissions in the trial of the class action but before any decision was handed down, the plaintifs and the defendants agreed upon terms for a settlement of the class action. Tackling wombat mange

By KATH GANNAWAY PAMELA Wiencke had for a long while dedicated her energies to rescuing injured wildlife, but that energy is now focused on keeping one particular native animal free from pain and disease.

Pamela, from Hoddles Creek, took on the role of volunteer co-ordinator with the Upper Yarra branch of Mange Management Inc., a group tackling the painful scourge of mange in wombats in a very downto-earth way.

The organisation, run by Jenny and Reg Mattingley, launched their treatment program in the area last year with the help of a grant from Warburton Community Bank.

The Mattingleys joined Pamela and other volunteers recently to present a community information day and to accept a further grant from the bank to maintain the program.

The treatment relies on identifying wombats with mange and then delivering a dose of medication that is spilled onto the animal that enters or leaves its burrow.

She is working with a number of property owners in Woori Yallock and Hoddles Creek who are now treating wombats themselves. “We like people to get a photo to us so we can determine whether a wombat is mangy, or there’s an-

other problem, and we then work with residents to treat the animals, supplying the treatment along with support and training,� Pamela said.

Special nocturnal cameras are also available to help identify where there is a problem. “The great thing about using the camera is that we are able to target affected animals, but we are also

finding pockets of healthy wombats,� she said.

For Jenny and Reg, the success of the Upper Yarra program has been more than rewarding, and they are expanding to Gippsland.

Jenny said the program had doubled in its first 12 months, but that more education was needed to really tackle the problem. “I think what we are doing will take a number of years to see the real benefit, but mange, along with road kill, are problems that have the potential to see pockets of wombats disappear, so we need to act now,� she said. “The most important part of this program is educating people who are unaware of what mange is and how easy it spreads, but also that now we can do something about it, and act on that.�

Piggy’s worthy appeal THE annual Very Special Kids’ Piggy Bank Appeal is coming around again, and Healesville RSL is calling for the community come on board and help.

The RSL’s family fun day for the Piggy Bank Appeal will be held on Saturday 13 September in the car park at the RSL, with a number of children’s attractions. A mobile animal farm, jumping castle, fairy floss, sausage sizzle and market stalls will all be at the event on

the day, but Healesville RSL manager, Suzanne Serra, said the venue needed people to come on board.

She said the RSL had raised just under $10,000 at last year’s event, raising more and more each year, but that they were still low on stallholders and musicians for September’s event. “Every year, we’ve done better, so we’d like to do better - but we seem to be struggling this year,� she said.

She said that, when the big day comes around, she would like to see a number of musicians busking at the event, as well as market stalls from different shops or restaurants in the community.

Letters I FEEL compelled to write you a letter to praise a young teen and his honesty.

Yesterday (Wednesday 6 August), my husband and I went walking to the cemetery with our granddaughter. While there a young teen came up to me and asked my name and if I had lost a purse which he had just picked up in Badger Creek Road beside the cemetery.

As it wasn’t mine we had a quick look and discovered the lady’s name and address ... he then said he would walk to her home and return it ... I praised him for his honesty.

My husband and I then continued our walk along Badger Creek Road and found numerous cards and paperwork out of the same purse, so my husband then walked around to return them also ... the lady was not home at the time and sure enough at the front door was her purse with a little note from this young man.

She pulled into the driveway as David was leaving and he asked her if she had lost her purse ... she hadn’t realised she had and when he told her the story she was just so overwelmed at this boy’s honesty, as there was quite a bit of money in it, too.

She went straight inside to call him and thank him.

So to that young man, a very big thankyou from an everyday Healesvillian - you deserve a big pat on the back for being so honest.

Swinburne angst ONE just has a sense of anger and frustration over the future of the Swinburne University site.

The site was compulsorily acquired for the local community.

It was a gift because of the overwhelming educational need and so strongly supported by local government, all politicians, schools and a wide range of community interests.

Swinburne was asked on behalf of the community to provide programs and in doing so gained university status.

Then without a whimper from our local politicians, legislation was enacted freeing Swinburne form its outer east commitment. The community has been betrayed.

This is community theft.

The university will argue it has offered the site for sale to education providers.

With no taker, they are on track for a commercial sale.

So potentially we will see a transfer of resources from the outer east to Hawthorn.

Social justice demands that this site given to the community remains a community asset.

Belling the cat TO MISS Robyn (Claw back law, Mail, 5 August).

I will now give you the other side of the cat, so to speak.

You say that your cat is domesticated, do you know what she does when she jumps your neighbour’s fence? I will hazard a guess and say no ...

Well, I will tell you what cats do when they jump over fences, they are jumping fences to hunt. This is where most cat owners tell me that their cat does not hunt, that just goes to show the ignorance of the owner. Cats’ hunting instincts are tuned to anything that moves quickly - the birds that swoop your cat have probably lost their family to your cat previously.

In Australia, domestic and feral cats kill over 20 million animals a day … your cat would be in this quota. Just because she does not bring the dead animals home, doesn’t mean that she is not hunting.

If not hunting then she will be defecating in your neighbour’s yard, usually digging up seedlings and garden beds in the process.

If your neighbour has dog/s then the dogs

will dig it up and either roll in it or eat it.

There is also the possibility that she will be urinating on your neighbour’s car vents.

That smell will never go away; one pays over $30,000 for a car, parks it in their own carport and along comes the neighbour’s cats and urinates on the vent.

Other than the appalling smell, now selling the vehicle is nigh on impossible.

You say that you would be incensed if someone put your cat in a trap - sorry lady, your cat voluntarily goes into the trap, and then is picked up by the ranger because your neighbours are over your cat’s behaviour. This is your fault, not the cat’s - cats do what cats do, and in your ignorance you allow it to annoy not only your immediate neighbours but probably the whole neighbourhood.

You say that the new laws are unrealistic and unfair, to whom? You? A person who obviously cannot be bothered to control her cat. Your cat has never had any rights outside of your property, I don’t know where cat owners get this “holier than thou” attitude with their cats.

Dog owners are not allowed to let their dogs run free, they get fined, now that cat owners are on an equal footing to dog owners, what’s the problem? They both will kill native animals if uncontrolled.

You must remember that we have taken native animals’ habitat and built houses, they do come into your yard trying to survive. ’Tis blindingly obvious the damage to the fauna of Australia that cats are doing; open your eyes and bring your cat inside where it should be, or is it that you cannot be bothered to clean the cat box after your cat, you would rather leave that mess for your neighbours.

I have friends with cats, lovely creatures, these cats are NOT allowed outside, both for the cats’ protection (feline aids and foxes) and the native animals’ protection.

These cats are well adjusted and content.

Get YOUR act together lady and control your cat, remember this law came into being because of people like you who do not control their cats. With your and other cats owners’ neglect of their cats, this is the entire reason this new law has been applied.

By CAITLIN MCARTHUR BLOCKAGES and a build-up of fat and grease at the Lilydale Sewage Treatment Plant has Yarra Valley water warning customers to think twice about what they put down the drain.

General Manager of Infrastructure Services at Yarra Valley Water David Snadden said people needed to understand the troubles that could be caused.

“We all know where number ones and twos go, but there is no such thing as a number three so please do not put anything else down the drain,” Mr Snadden said.

Mr Snadden said despite the worldwide circulation of pictures of the ‘fatberg’ in London’s sewerage system last year, the world had still failed to grasp the need for grease, oil and fats to be disposed of properly.

A ‘fatberg’ is a blockage in the sewerage system, caused by the disposal of fats, oil, and grease through drainage systems. The one found in Lon-

don was reported as being the size of a bus and was the result of several years of build-up.

Yarra Valley Water is looking to residents to ensure this doesn’t happen in Melbourne.

Mr Snadden identified fat, grease and oils as a real concern, “they block pipes, restricting flow and ultimately the speed of service we can provide to our customers”.

The pressure caused by the build-up can cause sewage spills and damage to the pipes.

Yarra Valley Water listed the top 10 causes for blockages as: plastics, paints, pesticides, fats, grease and oils, food scraps, cotton buds, nappies, condoms, sanitary products and medicines.

Treated sewage is either reused or returned to creeks, rivers and oceans.

Mr Snadden warned that putting the wrong things down the sewer affected the ability of Yarra Valley Water to treat the water and had the potential to cause serious environmental damage.

By KATH GANNAWAY HEALESVILLE woman Linda House will have plenty to talk about after 10 days driving around 6000 kilometres in a 40-year-old lime-green Toyota Crown as part of the 2014 Variety Bash.

Linda accepted the challenge to join friend June Coleman on the New South Wales event which left Brisbane on Thursday 7 August, heading for Busby’s Bore in Sydney.

A crop monitor for the Toolangi strawberry runner growers, Linda said she enjoyed challenging herself whether it was giving a talk as a member of Healesville Toastmasters, peddling with cycling club friends or heading north to the top of Cape York on one of many driving adventures.

The Variety Bash is Australia’s most successful charity motoring event raising money to help empower children who are sick, disadvantaged or have special needs.

In Victoria alone, the Bash has raised over $18million dollars since 1992.

AS A tribute for 10 years of love and care given to their mother, a family has built a new garden and shelter area at the Holmwood Private Aged Care Facility in Healesville.

Clear that the site was not a memorial for their mother Margurita Myra Nellie Wilkinson, the family of 12 children built the site to thank the staff for their care as well as provide an enjoyable space for the residents.

Kevin Wilkinson, the eldest of her children said making the site which took eight weekends was a labour of love.

“Our main focus was to show our appreciation for the love, support and care shown by the facility over the past 10 years.”

“We hope it can be used as an activities area for residents to use or a place to sit with their familiies,” he said.

Facility manager Emily Rogers said they were thrilled to welcome the new outside area where they would run activities such as painting.

“The residents love to sit outside ... it creates another opportunity for them to sit among each other and be social. Providing an outside environment is important for health,” she said.

The new area includes a shelter with inbuilt seating and a sundeck with a table set in the middle of a garden. Margurita’s children travelled far and wide for the unveiling of the new site, with some coming from Western Australia.

Passing at age 87 in January this year, Margurita was born in Lilydale and spent most of her life in Healesville. She is survived by 12 children, 38 grandchildren and over 60 great grandchildren.

Vietnam veteran makes no Boness

By REBECCA BILLS IT MAY be a case of too little, too late but the RSL is determined to never make the same mistake again.

Vietnam veteran Roger Boness said for years after the Australian soldiers returned home from Vietnam they felt isolated and shamed.

“We would try and talk to people, but no one was prepared to listen with most RSL’s saying we weren’t welcome there,” he said.

“But times have changed and they (the RSL) are very concerned that they didn’t get it right with the Vietnam veterans and they don’t want to make that same mistake again.”

At 21 years of age, Roger was sent to Vietnam in 1966 as part of an artillery unit that was deployed to an infantry unit.

“It was my responsibility when we got in contact with the enemy to bring in supporting artillery,” he said.

“For my job, I had to map read and to know every minute of the day where we were on the ground - for

Roger said when they got word at how public the war was in Australia and the bitterness from the public, it hurt the soldiers.

“We were over there on behalf of

our government, in mortal danger, and these people were concerned about their own political agendas and we were used as a tool,” he said.

Post-traumatic stress, bilateral hearing loss, skin cancer alongside the skin on his hands peeling off each year as a result of the chemi-

“We were often sodden, quite often our clothes would rot off us, our skin would start to peel off and then there were the leeches and the snakes,” he said.

Australia’s military involvement in Vietnam lasted 10 years (1962 to 1972), the longest in our nation’s history, with almost 60,000 Australian soldiers serving in Vietnam.

During those 10 years, 521 Australians died and more than 3000 were injured, with many of the soldiers sent to Vietnam being sons of the soldiers who fought in WWII and the grandsons of Gallipoli veterans.

The Yarra Valley Vietnam Veterans’ Day Combined Service will be held in Mount Evelyn this year on Sunday 17 August.

The service will commence at 11am at Mount Evelyn Memorial Gardens, corner of Birmingham Road and Wray Crescent followed by commemorations and a veterans’ march to the RSL.

Academics open fire

By JESSE GRAHAM A WAR of words has erupted between pro-logging groups and conservationalists after a controversial report was released last week linking logging to devastating bushfires such as Black Saturday.

The new study, released last week, said that trees aged between seven and 70 burn with higher intensity and pose a greater risk to surrounding towns.

However, the validity of the study has been questioned by another professor, who agrees that young trees pose fire risks, but said the timber industry isn’t to blame.

University of Melbourne’s Chris Taylor and Michael McCarthy, along with Australian National University (ANU) Professor David Lidenmayer, released a study last week on the forests near Toolangi.

Using the Black Saturday bushfires as a case study, the study demonstrates that mountain ash trees aged between seven and 70 receive significantly more damage in bushfires than trees outside of the age bracket.

As a result, according to Prof Lindenmayer, those intermediate aged trees contribute to a higher severity of bushfires that run through the area, such as those seen during the Black Saturday fires.

Prof Lindenmayer said the study had serious implications for the timber industry, which he believes contributes to intermediate-aged, more fire-prone trees in the forests.

“Anything you logged yesterday, logged today or will log tomorrow will

“This means that fire is more intense, more severe, and we need to be very, very careful about where we’re logging.

“We shouldn’t be logging near towns such as Marysville, Healesville or Warburton.”

Professor Peter Attiwill has criticised Prof Lindenmayer’s stance on the timber industry and said his comments may cause undue panic in an area which is prone to fire.

While Prof Attiwill does not dispute that trees of different ages burn at different severities, and said it was something they agree on, he said the link to logging is too tenuous.

In Hoddles Creek, Doug Armstrong recorded 139mm of rain over the month, compared to 120mm the year before, while Warburton’s Keith Thomas recorded 152mm - well above the month’s average of 116.7mm.

Mr Armstrong and Mr Thomas both noted an increase in rainfall over the last seven months, when compared to the January-July period in 2013.

Mr Armstrong recorded 610mm in the seven months last year, with 675mm so far in 2014, while Mr Thomas recorded 737mm, which is dramatically higher than the average of 694.3mm.

“VicForests will review this most recent fire research paper by Taylor et al in 2014 in consultation with leading fire scientists, in line with our best practice approach to ecological forestry,” he said.

Prof Lindenmayer called on Minister for Agriculture, Food Security and Water Peter Walsh to review the state’s forest management in the wake of the study.

“A Coalition government is committed to the responsible management of Victoria’s public land and reducing fire risk,” Mr Walsh said in 2010.

COOKING wasn’t his first option when choosing a career, but he wouldn’t have it any other way.

Oscar’s on the Yarra head chef Mark Krueger initially studied civil engineering for three years, before realising his true calling was in the kitchen.

Choosing the hard route of an apprenticeship to build up the experience he needed, he started at the bottom in a small restaurant called Yolans where the head chef at the time had trained with the Roux brothers in London.

Mr Krueger then moved to the Windsor Hotel (an Oberoi hotel) in Melbourne under Bruno Cerdan and completed a further three-year apprenticeship, moving from position to position covering all the famous hotel’s food and beverage outlets.

Then came a fantastic opportunity to work with the renowned Paul Bocuse Restaurant.

It was here that Mr Krueger experienced the true art of traditional French cookery with an Asian twist under the tutelage of executive chef Philippe Mouchel who had worked in Japan for 10 years.

After 18 months Mr Krueger was promoted to Chef de Partie. Simultaneously, he studied at the William Angliss Culinary Institute in Melbourne and passed with honours.

The Paul Bocuse Restaurant sadly closed and Mr Krueger worked in a couple of established venues broadening his experience in various styles of cuisine including the Queenscliff Hotel restaurant, renowned for its local seafood in coastal Victoria and then later Langton’s, a New York style grill room in Melbourne.

After a brief ‘walkabout’ in Europe and to trace his roots in Germany Mr Krueger returned home and joined the Sofitel in Melbourne as Chef de Cuisine of Cafe La, the Brasserie Restaurant under chef Marcus Moore of London’s Dorchester fame.

Then came Mr Krueger’s first ‘number one position’ as executive chef of the award winning Marylands Country House in the Yarra Valley.

After two and a half years his talents were recognised by the Six Senses hotel group and he was invited to be part of the opening team for the Hideaway Resort in Hua Hin, Thailand as Chef de Cuisine.

Over the next six and a half years he worked at Coco Palm Resort and Spa in the Maldives as executive chef and food and beverages manager, Six Senses, Koh Samui as executive chef where the prestigious restaurant Dining on the Rocks received the award as best restaurant in Thailand (2009, Thailand Tattler) and at Tongsai Bay as Executive Chef with the philosophy of using local sustainable produce high on the agenda.

Now happily married with two young children, he says he has moved back to Australia with the belief of finding the ideal place to raise his family and is heading up the culinary team at Oscar’s on the Yarra in Warburton.

By ANEEKA SIMONIS STRATHVEA Festival has returned for its third annual performance, welcoming back nationally renowned chamber group, the Australian Haydn Ensemble.

The musicians, who have performed in venues across the country including the Sydney Opera House, will offer an intimate concert at the Strathvea Guest House in Healesville on 16 and 17 August.

Over one hundred years old, the guest house will be filled with renditions of classical music up to 400 years old, played by period instruments under candlelight.

Starting at 5pm on Saturday 16 August, the quartet will perform their first concert, “Stylus Fantasticus” which will include music by composers Rosenmuller, Becker, Fischer, Buxtehude and Biber. It will then be followed by the ensemble’s string quartet performance of Haydn classics.

Festival organiser Deanna Eccles said the performance was standout.

“Listening to the ensemble is the most beautiful and exquisite experience I have ever had. I can’t find words for it ... it sends tingles up my spine,” Eccles said.

The festival will culminate on Sunday 18 August with a poetry recital by former Blue Heelers actor John Wood against the ensemble.

Eccles said the poetry, both classic and modern, helped create a romantic narrative to the string performance.

By breaking up the concert with poetry, John adds imagination to the experience instead of allowing people to just float away with the music,” she said.

WOORI Yallock students talked their way to victory, scoring two out of three top prizes at last week’s Primary Schools’ Speech Contest in Healesville.

The contest was held at Healesville High School on Wednesday 6 August, where nine students from schools around the Yarra Valley faced off in friendly competition.

Each student made a three-minute speech on a range of topics, and were marked by Toastmasters representatives on their overall performance.

Rotary Club of Healesville put on the evening, which is the second annual speech contest for the area, and the first to include Woori Yallock Primary School.

Woori Yallock’s Jaymi Ingram and Stephanie Maguire took out first and third prize in the contest, while Badger Creek Primary School’s Aiden Ratcliff received a second place medal.

Jaymi was awarded first place for her stirring speech on living vicariously and happily, which began with the prompt “it’s always the right

time to ... ” “The world was not made for you to just sit around inside and do nothing!” she began.

“It was made for you to have fun and enjoy every single moment you have of daylight.”

Aiden’s speech was all about his favourite creature - the spider and he tried to convince the crowd to come around to the much-feared arachnid.

“OMG - did you know that there are more than 30,000 different kinds of spiders in the world?” he said.

“I know you think that’s a bad thing, but I’m here to try and convince you that it’s not.”

Stephanie Maguire’s speech hit a hard note, and she referenced Martin Luther King’s famous “I have a dream” speech, when she said if she could change the world, she would eliminate racism.

“What is anti-racism? It means treating everyone fairly, not making racist jokes, respecting people and being friendly to each other, regardless of where they come from or what they look like,” she said.

IN A year with some great science fiction films, Lucy is one of the best so far.

Humans supposedly only use 10 per cent of their brains’ capacity.

But when Lucy (Scarlett Johansson), an American student in Taiwan, is exposed to a cognition-enhancing drug after being tricked into becoming a drug mule, she begins unlocking her entire brain and accessing extraordinary powers.

With films such as Leon and The Fifth Element in his body of work, director Luc Besson has a talent for creating intense, over-the-top action movies that are still charged with intelligence and witty humour. Lucy is no exception.

The film is positively bursting with vibrant visual style, features some insanely creative action scenes and great performances from Johansson and Oldboy star Choi Min-Sik, who is suavely sinister in his Western debut.

Johansson commands every scene with calm intensity, and the film is a lean, stylish and intriguing journey of her

character essentially becoming an omnipotent god, gaining telepathy, telekinesis and later control over matter and time.

This progression fuels the beautiful visuals and action, and the drug cartel hunting her keeps it suspenseful.

The 10 per cent myth in the premise is nonsense, and though Lucy propagates this and some other basic misunderstandings about science, the film is still infused with enthusiasm for science and the possibilities it holds for human improvement.

Ultimately, Lucy is cool and brainy (in that order).

Trophy held aloft in victor y THE annual Cockatoo Hills Challenge was held on Saturday at a soggy Mountain Road Reserve, Cockatoo. The event, held by Cockatoo Little Athletics Club, is one of the must-run events on the Yarra Ranges Athletics calendar. Events ranging from 500m to 3000m over a testing, undulating course suited the multitalented Yarra Ranges athletes.

A great turnout of club members, young and old, ensured the return of the perpetual trophy to the Yarra Ranges Athletics trophy cabinet.

Parents and their kids alike, all get a sleep in next weekend with no cross country events. Their Athletics Victoria registered athletes will be competing at the 5km or 15km road race in Ballarat.

The next club event is the cross country fun day and presentation day on Saturday 23 August.

A 14-GOAL first half gave Upwey Tecoma an insurmountable advantage at the main break over Emerald in YVMDFL Division 1 action on Saturday - storming to a 65-point win, 21.15 (141) to 12.4 (76).

The hometown Tigers booted six goals-to-one in the first quarter but had 13 scoring shots-totwo, outlining their dominance.

The second term continued in a similar vein, but after the break the Bombers clicked into gear, booting six majors of their own in one of their best quarters for the year and adding some respectability to the scoreboard.

Upwey was too strong all over the ground for the most part though, creating 20 more scoring shots.

Alex Hellriegel booted four majors up forward for the visitors in his best output for the season, while Justin Davis and player-coach Josh Taylor added two apiece. Trent Wilson made his senior Bombers debut and played a starring role, while Luke McKenna was again at his reliable best. Ed Pascoe, Nathan Bownds and Michael Dompietro also stood up to be counted for the visitors; while Chad Davis, Sam Gooley and Daniel Waters (four goals) were superb for the Tigers, who had 12 separate goal-kickers.

McCombe has now kicked 24 goals in the past two weeks and is second only to Seville star Nathan O’Keefe in the league’s goalkicking. Brad Porter, Chris Vernal and Luke Tyrrell also shone as the Brookers rung in their 10year 2004 premiership reunion in style. For the Eagles, meanwhile, Todd Cordwell, Lachlan Cove and Daniel Amrein stood strong while David Lever and Matt Jones slotted two goals apiece.

Gap narrows for the top YVMDFNL WITH two rounds to go in Division 1 of the Yarra Valley Mountain District Community Bank Football Netball League, the top five is still wide open with six clubs jostling for a position in the final five.

Mount Evelyn take on Olinda next week in what could be a season ending game for both clubs.

Upwey take on ladder leaders Monbulk to keep its season alive.

In Division 2 the last round sees Thornton sitting fifth, one game ahead of Alexandra and Gembrook.

Alexandra has the bye so it will finish sixth.

Gembrook takes on Thornton but needs a massive win to boost its percentage to take fifth spot.

Netball in Division 1 sees Mount Evelyn and Olinda on the same point sitting, four and five.

A win is a must for both to hold down their spot in the five.

Division 2 looks like the final five is set.

It would take a massive win by Powelltown over Kinglake to boost its percentage and Seville to beat Yarra Junction.

Division 1 Seniors Woori Yallock 12.8 (80) d Warburton Millgrove 9.11 (65) WOORI Yallock’s Premiership defence is still well and truly alive after a hard fought victory over Warby.

This game was in the balance deep into the last quarter, Woori looked the goods early in the game and jumped out to a 14-point lead at the first break but Warby bounced back with hard one-onone footy and by three quarter time Woori’s lead was just four points.

The last quarter was tough going but Woori’s efficiency was the difference as it booted four straight goals to 2.1 to win by 15 points and now finds itself third on the ladder.

Wandin 16.11 (107) d Healesville 10.9 (69) WANDIN’S good form has continued after a handy 38 point win over Healesville.

The first quarter was reasonably even with Wandin leading by just seven points but Wandin took control in the second term booting seven goals to two to go into half-time 39 points ahead.

Even though the second half was an even contest and Healesville certainly held its own against the league leaders it never looked to be any real threat as Wandin had all the answers.

Division 2 Seniors Yarra Glen 20.18 (138) d Powelltown 11.15 (81) THIS game looked as though it was going to be a beauty in the first quarter because it went goal for goal and Yarra Glen held a slender three-point lead at the first break.

However, Yarra Glen had other ideas and broke the game open to a degree in the second scoring four goals to one and really should have been further in front than its 25-point half-time lead.

Yarra Glen put the game beyond doubt in the third with some great running play booting seven goals to two for the term and its lead had blown out to nine goals.

The last quarter was an even contest but Yarra Glen had done the damage that Powelltown was never coming back from.

Alexandra 22.19 (151) d Yea 14.7 (91) A GOOD four quarter performance from Alex secured it them with what was a comfortable 10 goal win over Yea. The first half was somewhat competitive and Alex’s lead was just 21 points at the main break but it broke the game open in the third with a sixgoal to three term and then backed it up in the last booting seven goals to five which sees it one game out of the top five but with a low percentage and just one game to go it would be hard to see it getting in now.

Woori did lead at all the changes but Warby was always within striking distance.

Going into the last quarter Woori’s lead was just three goals.

The last quarter was a ripper and Warby did look like it was going to pinch the win but come the final bell scores were all tied up in what was a fitting result to a classic contest.

ond half as it stretched its lead out to nine goals at the last change and then finished the day off well with a 12-goal to three last quarter to win well but it certainly had to work hard for it.

THE Marysville Thursday nine holers played a Par round on the back nine holes. The winner was Rob Richards with -2 followed by Graham Page with -4 who also won the nearest the pin with his tee shot to the 18th hole.

Both the ladies and men played a stroke round for the first round of the Winter Aggregate.

The men’s winner was Steve Coker (25) with nett 64 followed closely by Glen Iris resi-

dent and member Ming Kuan (17) with nett 65. The ladies winner was the in-form Gail Leigh (11) with nett 73 and Sabrina Stow (24) was the runnerup with nett 78. Sherbrooke was unable to best the reigning Big V State Championship Men premiers Corio Bay Stingrays as the Geelong-based team knocked off the Suns by 14 points on Sunday.
