as they did not directly affect commercial park operators, Ms Kahler said, but added council was reassessing whether the cost of ongoing maintenance was still “worthwhile” at the Dalveen site.

“There is no such thing as free camping - somebody is paying for it,” Ms Kahler said.

“If you are a pensioner and struggling to pay your rates bill and you can’t afford to go on holidays, then I think these pensioners would object to us subsidising free areas for people to have a holiday.”

A SDRC spokeswoman said the council was reviewing all of its parks as part of its Parks Rationalisation Program.

The reference group is expected to provide council with its recommendations by April 2015.

THE Southern Downs is losing up to $1.8 million in tourism revenue because it fails to provide adequate non-commercial accommodation, a national motorhome club spokesman says.

Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia (CMCA) communications manager Colin Balfour said the region was shunning a slice of the lucrative recreational vehicle (RV) pie the fastest growing domestic tourism sector in Australia, according to CMCA. “Currently the Southern Downs region is missing out on this market because it is perceived as being unfriendly to RV travellers by not offering a mix of accommodation options,” Mr Balfour said.

Cafe with a twist

UNIQUE, quirky, sustainable and community-focused are all words used to describe Warwick’s newest cafe, the Warwick Collective.

The funky grass-roots project based at Fitzroy Street had its official opening earlier this month, much to the delight of Warwick Collective vice-president Julia Keogh.

Ms Keogh said the event was a great chance to thank everyone - with scrumptious homemade food and lashings of mulled wine - who helped support the establishment of the store.

“The amazing generosity of people with their time has been incredible,” she said.

“We had people who sanded and repolished the floor, people who assisted us with the painting and decorating, the stockists and the list goes on.”

The cafe, which features communal seating and hearty food incorporating local produce, also offers a space for local artisans and craftspeople to sell their lovingly made wares.

“What I really, really love is that we are talking about keeping it local and actually showcasing the amazing produce and talents that we have in A great crowd turned out to the opening of the Warwick Collective. our local area,” Ms Keogh said.

The social-enterprise cafe is open from 10am to 3pm Thursday to Sunday, with plans to expand to an additional day as the business grows.

It forms part of Warwick Collective’s aim to contribute to community well-being through the support and promotion of healthy eating and lifestyle, participation in the arts, learning and mentoring, education, friendship, inclusiveness, environmentalism, multiculturalism and cooperation.

Cool it on bins SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council is reminding residents that hot ash from fireplaces should not be placed in domestic wheelie bins or taken to waste depots, after council staff found a fire in one of the bins at the Killarney Waste Trasfer Station recently.

SDRC environmental services manager Tim O’Brien said the correct disposal of hot ash was very important.

“Waste disposal company JJ Richards has advised council that waste collection drivers are finding many wheelie bins that have been damaged by smouldering ash,” he said.

“This is a fire hazard and with our current drought conditions it creates a major risk.”

Over the years council workers have seen fires starting throughout the waste collection process, including in the collection vehicles and at landfill.

“We urge people to dispose of their hot ash by other means or simply wait until the ashes are cold,” Mr O’Brien said.

In brief Cycleway to Saddlers Estate complete TENTERFIELD’S footpath and bikeway along the banks of Tenterfield Creek has been extended to Tenterfield Dam and Saddler’s Estate.

Council’s engineers used the contribution by Saddler’s Estate developer Mike Townes to secure matched grant funding from the Roads and Maritime Services.

There is now almost 5km of pedestrian/cycle route access traversing Tenterfield without crossing the New England Highway.

New grader updates council fleet COUNCIL has taken delivery of a new Cat 12M grader which replaces an older 2005 Komatsu model.

The new grader has been allocated to the Western area of the shire and forms part of council’s fleet of four graders.

Council approved the purchase of the new grader at its meeting in May.

Game of chicken ABOUT 60 concerned residents turned out to a public forum on poultry farm developments at Warwick on Monday night.

The meeting at the Criterion Hotel was organised by a group of local landowners staunchly opposed to the proposed development of a large broiler farm near Pratten, which went before Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) for deliberation yesterday.

The group says it is not against chicken farms as such, but contends the DA in question ignores serious environmental, amenity and planning issues.

A representative from each of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) and Department of State Development, Infrastructure and Planning (DSDIP) attended and

explained the new system which sees the State Government take over from local government as environmental assessors.

SDRC’s planning and environment department and the developer were invited to attend, but failed to show.

However, council was represented, with deputy mayor Ross Bartley and councillors Neil Meiklejohn, Vic Pennisi and Jamie Mackenzie on hand to listen to the discussion.

While there, Cr Meiklejohn spoke about council’s position, which he said had to balance a number of important social, environmental and economic issues.

SDRC director of planning and environment Ken Harris said earlier this month council “would normally not attend meetings that are set up as part of protest to development applications”.

Mr Greacen said regardless of the outcome on this particular application council had to “lift the benchmark” and “show more planning nous” so future generations were not left wondering “who was asleep at the wheel”.

The meat chicken industry contributes $370 million in GVP to the Queensland economy and employs about 4000 people, according to DAFF’s 2010-’11 figures.

TENTERFIELD Police are appealing for witnesses after a spate of graffiti which has been occurring around town in recent times.

Police reported several buildings and signs had been damaged with the symbol “24” written on them. Elsewhere, a sign advertising a local motel was graffitied on the Bruxner Highway at Barney Downs.

Driving charges TWO people were charged driving while under the influence of alcohol in Tenterfield last week.

Both drivers allegedly recorded just above the legal limit of .05, after being stopped by police during random breath testing in Tenterfield.

Police have issued a general warning to drivers that there is no excuse for getting behind the wheel after having a few alcoholic drinks.

Sgt Mick Eaton of Tenterfield police said random breath testing was a regular event.

Maritime might STANTHORPE’S PTS Kookaburra navy cadets have welcomed an exciting new addition to their unit, compliments of a government grant.

The premier youth organisation, which forms part of the Australian Navy Cadets, was one of six units across the country to receive a rigid hulled inflatable boat to assist with cadet activities.

The 60-horsepower engine boat will be used to teach 29 cadets new skills in power boating and seamanship, with plans to unleash it on the waters of Storm King and Leslie dams as soon as possible, sub-lieutenant and officer in charge Jason Dorward said.

Amid sunny skies on Sunday, cadets, family members and friends gathered at Stanthorpe’s old army base to take part in the vessel’s official naming ceremony.

Southern Downs MP Lawrence Springborg was on hand to witness the parade and unveil the chosen name - “Fearless”.

Driver searched A 20-YEAR-OLD man has been charged with possessing a knife in a public place without excuse after being pulled over by Stanthorpe Police on Wallangarra Road last Thursday morning.

Police said the man had been stopped for a random breath test but a search of his vehicle revealed the driver to be in possession of a knife without reasonable excuse.

“Nobody in our community wants to deprive anyone of future security of power, we are just working with Ergon to make sure our community participates in a fair and just way.”

Mr Lobwein said Ergon was aware line route five could be “unviable” due to the airport and confirmed the company had commissioned an independent report to ensure it does not impact on council’s future plans for the aerodrome before proceeding to the next stage.

Southern Downs Regional Council mayor Peter Blundell told the Southern Free Times last month placement was crucial.

Ergon was also continuing to work through the regulatory processes to determine if Stanthorpe’s power supply security could be delivered more costeffectively, at least for some years, without constructing a second 110kV line, Mr Lobwein said.

THERE has been another development in the proposed secondary powerline from Warwick to Stanthorpe, with Ergon Energy determining a fifth line route.

Based on the corridor recommended by the Community Reference Group (CRG), the line route was narrowed down from a two-kilometre window following consultation with the United Land Owners Group (ULOG).

The project has come under fierce scrutiny by ULOG members who question the need for the second 110kV power line and also its close proximity to the Warwick Aerodrome.

Project manager Rod Lobwein said the next stage was to work with the community to re-evaluate the five line routes to ensure the most suitable route was selected.

“Now we have a fifth line route, rather than just a corridor, it is possible to more accurately make those comparisons and some additional criteria also have been identified that will be considered,” Mr Lobwein said.

A ULOG spokesman said their involvement in the decision was “by no means” condoning the establishment of a powerline on their properties.

ALGWA Queensland president Jan Clifford said she was delighted with the conference and thanked Southern Downs Regional Council for hosting, in particular SDRC councillor Jo McNally for organising the event.

“Cr McNally and her small team put on an excellent conference that has ensured our delegates were challenged and given invaluable lessons - at times our speakers were somoving that we laughed and cried,” she said.

Power to the people in regions

By ALENA HIGGINS REGIONAL communities are poised to reap the most from environmentally-friendly developments and should “actively encourage” such profitable investments to the Southern Downs, a local climate change activist has urged.

Elizabeth Ure said while the successful repeal of the carbon tax has potentially devastating repercussions for the environment and economy, the good news was that we still have control of our own backyards.

“As individuals and businesses we can invest in clean energy, which is now so competitive that the return on

investment is as low as three years,” the Warwick local said.

“We can also support our local council to encourage green developments such as wind farms and bio-gas plants.”

Ms Ure, who recently attended former US vice president Al Gore’s climate reality leadership training program in Melbourne, said by their very nature, rural communities had the most to gain from an economy based on green jobs.

She said the current politicised debate had unfortunately been muddied with misinformation and encouraged concerned residents to join a local en-

vironmental activist group she hoped to form due to the “lack of direction at federal level”.

Federal Member for Maranoa Bruce Scott told the Southern Free Times on 19 June the Coalition’s direct action plan to tackle climate change was ready to go, but was dependent on getting the whole of its budget measures through the senate.

The plan will use an incentives approach to encourage people to come up with ways to reduce carbon emissions, Mr Scott said.

Still jazzed up

By ALENA HIGGINS “BLISSFULLY exhausted” is how Jumpers and Jazz organiser Tracy Vellacott describes herself and her team following another hugely successful winter festival.

Thousands flocked to the Rose City to take part in the 11th annual celebration of winter in Warwick, which delivered with bunches of fun and frivolities over 10 jam-packed days.

“I think we continue to raise the bar every year and I think 2014 was our biggest yet,” the CEO of Warwick Tourism and Events said.

“In talking with businesses, visitors - everyone - the feedback we are receiving is that there were definitely more people in town.”

The number of visitors to the art gallery also floored organisers, with a whopping 7500 flowing through the doors.

“We saw a steady stream - queues even - to get into the Knitchen exhibition during weekends and mid-week as well,” Ms Vellacott said.

Gallery director Karina Devine described the increase, up from about 5000 last year, as “incredible”.

She also congratulated the “exceptional work” of tree jumper artists and thanked them for their participation.

Rather than slowing down, the festival picked up pace as it came to a spectacular conclusion on Sunday with the Picnic in the Park.

Massive crowds were lured to Leslie Park by the mouth-watering smells of Mexican, Spanish and German cuisines, not to mention the abundance of market stallholders and live jazz on offer.

More than 170 stallholders took part in this year’s event, according to market co-ordinator Sue Creed.

“I think the weather was absolutely brilliant,” she said.

“Stallholders had amazing things on offer and the crowds came out in force.”

The challenge for next year’s Jumpers and Jazz was to increase midweek visitation, Ms Vellacott said.

“We are going to be looking to grant money for the next financial year to help grow midweek packaging ... so we can have an equally vibrant program midweek as what we do on the weekends.”

Probus hits middle age A CLUB that helps foster an active retirement for community members has turned the big 40.

The Rose City Warwick Probus Club recently celebrated the 40th birthday of the founding of the Probus organisation in the South Pacific at a meeting and celebratory dinner at TAFE. Probus clubs are formed to foster an active retirement for community members, through the ideals of fun, fellowship and friendship.

They are sponsored by Rotary clubs as a community service, and the name Probus was chosen for the club, as a contraction of the words ‘professional and business’.

Former presidents Trevor Sheeran and June Sawyer cut the celebration cake for the Probus Club’s 40th birthday.

A decorated cake, which featured icing with a large Probus logo, was cut by two former presidents of the club, June Sawyer and Trevor Sheeran, to mark the special occasion.

All retired or semi-retired members of the community are encouraged to enjoy the company of like-minded people at Probus clubs.

Activities planned by the management committee include excursions, luncheons, dinners and theatre trips, at affordable costs.

Well swung in Warwick CROWD favourites, The Well Swung Daddies, thrilled fans at Kings Theatre at Warwick on Saturday night.

Audience members travelled from near and far to dance the night away as the 11-piece band kept them entertained.

Sax player Steven Saxton, yes that is his real surname, estimated crowds were up by about a third on last year.

“We love coming to Warwick, it’s such a good weekend,” he said.

“We had such a good response from everybody.”

Tax Tip - Reasonable Allowances It is always important to keep good records when it comes to claiming tax deductions, but it is not always necessary to have a receipt.

Other substantiation is required. Check with your accountant regarding what is accepted by the ATO.

For example, employees who receive an overtime meal allowance in accordance with their award are entitled to claim costs incurred up to $27.70 per meal without the need for receipts. This rate applies regardless of the amount of allowance paid by the employer. If your employer pays $12.50 per meal and you have spent more than this you can still claim up to $27.70.

Another area in which you can simplify your claim is home office expenses. If you work from home on occasions you can claim an hourly rate of 34c for electricity costs rather than going through the process of adding up your annual electricity bill and trying to apportion exactly how much you would have used on work related activity.

Employee truck drivers, whose income is less than $108,810 who sleep away from home and receive an allowance, are entitled to claim daily meal costs without receipts of up to $91.60.

In all cases it is still a good idea to keep substantiation records so that you can easily support your claim if you are required to do so.

Just because you don’t have to produce a receipt doesn’t mean the ATO won’t ask any questions.

Hypocrisy THERE are calls for Russian President Putin to be denied access to the upcoming G20 conference to take place in Brisbane later this year. The reason is Putin’s lack of co-operation concerning the investigation of the downed Malaysian airplane in the eastern Ukraine.

At the same time that we are hearing daily news of the Malaysian air tragedy the Israelis have been bombing and shelling Gaza. Hundreds of civilians have been killed, and the latest incident of the attack on the UN school has left 15 dead. Since Israel is a client state of the United States, why isn’t the world calling on President Obama to intervene in the Gazan conflict and rein in the Israeli military and force them to stop their attacks against civilians and non-military targets?

If the G20 were to deny President Putin from attending then why not be fair and deny President Obama from attending as well? There seems to be the spirit of hypocrisy afoot in how these two matters are being handled.

Reasons to act now I WAS left completely aghast by the story (page 2, Tenterfield Star, 23 July 2014). In my humble opinion it is at least misleading. The author is the Tenterfield Council’s business development officer Mr Harry Bolton and I strongly reject his assertions that: “Local business remains strong despite recent store closures” and “The town will roll with the punches and come out stronger.”

I challenge Mr Bolton to show us the data that he is relying on to support his opinion.

We currently have 14 closed shops and “online” (internet) purchasing is here to stay and becoming stronger each year which equates to more difficult times ahead. Within 10 years retailing as we know it will be only a fond memory. I commented on my seven-year long Monday morning

Unfortunately, my comments have cost me my job with TenFM, such is the determination to silence alternative thinkers with new ideas.

Our council has earmarked $600,000 (from memory) to rip up Bruxner Park and replace it with another park.

This is totally inappropriate at this time. Let’s get pro-active and redirect this to seed new or exotic cottage industries/businesses.

Tenterfield could be the leader in this essential transition to a new kind of retailing.

Tenterfield is blessed with having an attractive main street with plenty of through traffic. Unlike Maleny, Tambourine etc., they have to attract their customers on a non-through trip up a mountain yet they still fill the business precinct.

The window of opportunity will not wait for Tenterfield if they dilly-dally. A vibrant main street is one of the most important ingredients to ensure the townships and associated villages’ financial, cultural and community pride. It is high time that council put aside its antagonism toward our association and instead sat down with all interested parties to find a solution to this inevitable change which is an unstoppable reality.

Father of fruit industry a pioneer Stanthorpe-based ROBERT MACMAURICE has a keen eye for local history and research skills to match, and he has agreed to share the fruits of his labour with Southern Free Times readers with occasional contributions, beginning with this piece on pioneering priest Father Jerome Davadi.

“WHAT IS TRUTH?” An article from the book “The Way God Told It” All believers regardless of denominational creed search for truth, because it seems that truth in this world is continually changing, as in what was true yesterday is no longer true today. However you can be assured that God’s universal truth is still the same as it has always been, unaltered and unalterable. So, what is God’s universal, unchangeable truth? God willing I will try to point it out to you in this short essay. In the gospel of John 18:3338 we read of an exchange between Pilate the Roman governor and Jesus. It unfolds in the following manner: “Pilate therefore entered again into the praetorium, and summoned Jesus, and said to Him, ‘Are You the King of the Jews?’ Jesus answered, ‘Are you saying this on your own initiative, or did others tell you about Me?’ Pilate answered, ‘I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priest delivered You up to me; what have You done?’ Jesus answered, ‘My Kingdom is not of this world, if My Kingdom were of this world, then My servant would be fighting, that I might not be delivered up to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not of this realm.’ Pilate therefore said to Him, “The Way God Told It” book is available ‘So you are a King?’ from the publisher “www.bookpal.com.au” based in Brisbane, also from “Amazon.com” Jesus answered: ‘You or you can order your copy through your say correctly that I am a King. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.’ Pilate said to Him, ‘What is truth?’ And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, ‘I find no guilt in Him.’” If we superficially read the above exchange between Pilate and Jesus we will also be left asking, “What is truth?” But if we look more closely, some interesting facts will emerge, such as “He has come into the world to bear witness to the truth.” And then Jesus makes an extraordinary statement about the human race, “Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.” What does it mean? And how did Jesus, by coming into the world bore witness to the truth? Or how can anyone be of the truth? The answer of course, through God’s wisdom, is staring at us in the face. We can all see it, but it can’t be perceived, unless it is spiritually revealed to us.

By the wisdom of God, the answer to “What is truth?” came out from Pilate’s own mouth, in the form of his

judgement of Jesus: “I find no guilt in Him.” In other words, “He is holy, He is without sin.” We can see that by being holy even unto death, He has fulfilled His primary mission, which speaks thus: “He has come into the world to bear witness to the truth.” That is to say, Jesus has shown us in words and deeds how to be holy, or how to be of the truth (which is not by mere chance the heart of the gospel).

So we come to the most simple and worldwideunderstood principle, because on the day that we are also to face judgement, that is all the truth that matters, for God will judge the world only according to our holiness or lack of it. Think about it. Is it possible to believe in God and yet practice sin? Is believing some denominational doctrine or an historical fact enough to be saved? Doesn’t even Satan believe?

But by the grace of God, we of the human race have been given a golden opportunity: “to be of the truth,” which enables us to hear His still and holy voice. All we have to have is the sincere desire to be holy, (remember Cornelius Acts 10:1-4) and if we as individuals have that desire it should not be too difficult for us to do. After that the Holy Spirit will lead each individual into repentance, for He knows the right way for each one of us, as we obey the prompting of the Holy Spirit, our inner attitude toward our fellow men and ourselves will change for the better, until we are at peace with God, at peace with ourselves and with the world.

On the day of judgement the Righteous Judge also will utter from His mouth, “I find no guilt in him.” On that day we will be changed from “who is of the truth” into “who is part of the truth.”

Because “Truth” in God’s eyes is not only that which is contrary to falsehood, but it is also a state of existence, the day will come when only “Truth” will exist in eternity.

Then we can confidently say that “Truth” is a state of unchanging holiness, the essence of God to which we, by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ have become partakers.

In John 14:6, Jesus said, “I Am the ‘Way’, the ‘Truth’, and the ‘Life’; no one comes to the Father, but through Me”. Yes! He is the “Way” because we must follow the footsteps of His earthly life = Repentance He is the “Truth” because He is the embodiment of unchanging holiness = God He is also the “Life” because He is the eternal Word = Eternal life What more is there to say? For I am fully convinced that if one doesn’t know anything about anything, but practises the beliefs that are in Jesus and/or lives his life by the principles of the gospel of holiness, he is acceptable to God. and vegetables. These properties were the horse yard at the presbytery, a property at Mount Marlay, another at The Caves, as well as a paddock next to the Sugarloaf Church.

Father Davadi’s interests also extended to being appointed to the Acclimatisation Committee in 1896, where it was decided to explore the introduction of trout and feathered game into the district as a food source.

When he travelled overseas in 1888, he travelled not only to Italy and Ireland, but also to Cornwall to study tin mining methods there.

He was a man not only interested in his theological vocation, but clearly driven and interested in a wide range of matters affecting the community that he lived in.

He wasn’t the first orchardist in the district, but he was among the first of a small band interested in this field.

Importantly, he was in a unique position of advocacy, and a community leader, who gave power to the notion of fruit and vegetable production in the district.

Father Davadi also appears to be the first to exhibit wine at the Stanthorpe Show and there are subsequent references of others following in this pursuit, as a result of his encouragement.

He is also reported as being an experienced vigneron. It might be surmised that this activity had a practical connection with some of the ceremonies of the Church service, but it might additionally be concluded that the drinking of wine with meals

was, and is, a very European custom.

Australian cultural practices did not embrace this custom very well until many, many years later.

Father Davadi was a man of learning and culture. The evidence shows that he inspired others in vegetable and fruit and wine making production.

The conferring of a title such as “Father of” or “Pioneer of” is usually a “custom and practice” arrangement. There is not one great arbiter for such titles.

There are other significant personalities in the story of the fruit and wine industry of this area, and they played a part, in later times.

Contemporary to Father Davadi, in the Warwick area are a number of other very significant wine makers and agriculturists, including, Jacob Kircher, David Mauch, William Spreadborough, Conrad Roemer, Frederick Reimer, and others. They developed a significant national as well as international interest in the wine production of this region, at that time.

Father Davadi died on 22 January 1900 at the age of 53 years and willed all his properties to the Church.

In 1978 the Stanthorpe Shire Council placed a plaque and monument in front of St Joseph’s Church. The plaque refers to Father Davadi as a “Pioneer of the Fruit Industry in Stanthorpe”.

Father Jerome Davadi is undoubtedly a very significant figure in the history of this area in relation to the wine and fruit industry.

Fr Jerome Davadi.

FATHER Jerome Davadi was born in 1846 at Monte Carotta, Ancona, Italy.

He was the son of Pietro and Elizabeth Davadi and studied for the priesthood at the University of Rome, which was called the Sapienza. He and two other priests were recruited to come to Australia directly from the university by the Bishop of Brisbane, the Rev James Quinn and they arrived in Brisbane on 28 February 1871 aboard the ship, Storm King.

Father Scortechini was initially sent to Warwick and Father Davadi replaced him there in June 1873.

Subsequently Father Davadi was appointed to Stanthorpe in 1874. The Church had been in operation since December 1872 in this new township.

It is significant to note that one of the priests that came to Australia with Father Davadi was Benedetto Scortechini. Father Scortechini graduated not only as a priest but as a lawyer, and at the time of his death in 1886, while on leave from the Church on a scientific expedition in Malaya, had an international reputation in botany.

Three plants of the Granite Belt are named after Father Scortechini, because he discovered and classified them.

Joyce Marsh WOODENBONG CORRESPONDENT IT COULD be a case of three times lucky for golfer Trevor Petty, who has twice achieved a hole in one on the Woodenbong and District Golf Club course.

Trevor will be one of the players contesting the inaugural Woodenbong “Yowie Cup” which will be held on 10 August.

The course and match committee decided a fresh event would be an inspiration for local golfers and visitors alike offering a country course with beautiful views and a relaxed atmosphere and decided a team event would be most suitable.

They have seen how popular other team events are as golf is a lot more fun to play with your mates when you are on the same team working together according to committee member Graeme Tye. “We had to decide on a name for the event,” he said.

“We came up with the ‘Yowie Cup’ because it ties in with the local area reputation of being the home of the “Yowie” due to sightings which have been reported over the many years. We have worked tirelessly on setting this new event up and, now, can only hope that the golfers out there will support us with their attendance”.

The major sponsor for the day is Taylor’s Mitre 10 (Woodenbong), who have sponsored the club for many years and are generously continuing their support with this new event.

The committee want to make this an annual event that all golfers around the northern rivers and southern QLD look forward to playing in each year and are calling for nominations for the inaugural Woodenbong and District Golf Club “Yowie Cup” which is a three-person am-

Winter fest shines

By ALENA HIGGINS ALLORA’S inaugural winter festival had a distinctly Mary Poppins feel when it made its debut on Saturday morning.

The town was abuzz with excitment as craft workshops, photography exhibitions and tree jumper decorating filled the halls and streets.

Allora Community Circle committee member Christine Gleeson said she was very pleased with the community’s involvement in the Meet the Makers demonstration by Allora artisans and hoped the event would continue to grow.

“We wanted to support the groups that were already involved in Jumpers and Jazz and expand the celebrations further into the shire just as Killarney has done,” she said.

“But we wanted it to be uniquely Allora and what we are trying to do is connect Allora with Mary Poppins.”

Helen Lyndon Goff, who began writing the mystical children’s series under the pseudonym P.L. Travers, spent two years of her childhood living in Allora before her banker father passed away and the family moved to Bowral, NSW. Ms Gleeson said the weekend also co-incided with the 145th anniversary of the municipality of Allora on 21 July.

WHAT a weekend of football. Most tipsters have been blown out of the water after a round where we saw frontrunners stumble and others surge; clubs in danger of imploding; coaches facing the axe and almost as many upsets as games. What will the next six rounds have to offer?

Manly were able to put their club dramas aside for their trip across the ditch. The assignment was made a little easier when Shaun Johnson withdrew after he suffered an injury at training.

Without Johnson the Warriors were like a ship without a rudder and Manly

shored up their spot at the top.

Wayne Bennett may be heading home to the Broncos but the news had no adverse effects on his current charges as they put the 2013 premier to the sword. The win puts the Knights at arm’s length from the wooden spoon and bumps the Roosters to fifth.

The Broncos simply failed on all levels at Suncorp on Friday night. Melbourne on the other hand announced that there is a Storm brewing on the 2014 premiership front. Their impressive win propels them to sixth spot and threatening. Brisbane must regroup and prepare for a tough game against

the Eagles at Brookvale on Friday night. A loss could see Brisbane slip off the premiership radar.

As Melbourne prepares for its next assignment against the Tigers; the unfolding drama in the Tigers’ den reveals a club in crisis. With the playing group and coach at odds, the Dragons took full advantage of their turmoil in round 20 claiming a convincing win 28-12. The win has the Dragons breathing down the necks of the Warriors and Brisbane as they work into the eight.

This weekend they play the Roosters and the result will say much about

the fate of both teams for the remainder of 2014. The Roosters will be without SBW who fractured his thumb in the game against the Knights. Dragons coach Paul McGregor has set the bar high for his charges and was not satisfied with their performance in round 20. A win here will be no great surprise.

Blunder lifts Games spirits The

THE Commonwealth Games has certainly provided lovers of Australian sport with some great entertainment since the games got underway.

There have been some magic moments, some funny incidents and some rather bizarre goings on as well as the usual hard luck and heartbreak moments.

There was that Cathy Freeman moment when the meticulously planned Commonwealth Games opening ceremony almost unravelled.

With the Queen waiting and an estimated one billion people around the world watching, Prince Imran of Malaysia struggled to open the baton that contained the Monarch’s message side – no pressure. The crisis averted even the Queen seemed amused.

Then of course, there was the Nigerian table tennis player Ojo Onaolapo who took celebrating a medal to a whole new level when he stripped down to his reggies in excitement after his team won a bronze medal. Thank goodness, it was only bronze and not gold. We may not have been amused.

The Australian swimming team look to have put the London debacle firmly behind them.

While as Aussies we should not get too carried away with the number of gold medals coming home to Oz, it is most pleasing to see the camaraderie, respect and genuine enjoyment in this team. A far cry from London.

For me personally, the performance of Anna Meares has been the highlight. Meares is a wonderful example of overcoming adversity with dignity, determination and class and the humility and honesty with which she handles victory and defeat is refreshing. The lengths to which Meares went to ensure she gave herself the best possible chance of winning a medal after carrying the Australian flag in the opening ceremony is amazing.

Some of our overpaid and pampered NRL players could do worse than take a hard look at how Anna Meares conducts herself. She is a role model and in my books one athlete most deserving of every success that comes her way.

HONOURS TO YOUNG LEFTIE THIRTY-TWO players took to the course in Warwick on Saturday for the B & K Motors sponsored event. It was young and upcoming leftie Josh Hynes who took the honours with 41 points.

David Craggs who also finished with 41 was the unlucky runner-up.

In the rundown, it was Geoff Hynze (38), Rodney MacDonald, Simon MacDonald and Nathan Dionysius all with 37 points. The pins went to Eddie Kemp on both the fifth and the seventh, Don Stewart on the ninth, John Francis on the 11th, and Cameron Scutts on 13 and Jay Roberts on the 16th.

Congratulations to those players who represented the Warwick club in the recent Pennants competition. The Division Four side claimed bragging rights with a win and the Division Three side placed a very close second in a great result for the club.

August is a busy month for Warwick golfers.

The action begins this weekend with the Warwick Real Estate Monthly Medal on Saturday followed by the 4 Ball Ambrose Ambulance Charity Golf Day, always a popular event.

Players need to be aware that there is a new rule in play for the 12th hole. The dam behind the green is now classed as a water hazard with a drop zone at rear of the green. This was the original classification when the hole was opened in February.

Captains Day is on 9 August, and it will also incorporate a new event, The Road to the PGA. By paying an extra $10, players will be sent a day ticket to the Australian PGA [value $25]. The player with the best score will qualify to play in an event at Royal Pines Resort the week before the PGA. In other news, the SSAA (Inglewood Branch) Inc. has been delegated to hold the Zone Two Five Stand Clay Target Championships and the Lever Action Pistol Cartridge Championships. All events will be open to both SSAA National Members and non-members. Non-members however are not eligible for placings.

Local Sport IT WAS THE BUTLER AND HIS PARTNER NO mystery at the ‘Garra on Saturday. It was the polished team of Peter Butler and Ash Fleming who were a touch classier than their nearest rivals the Hurtz brothers.

Despite the gloomy conditions, several hardened golfers came out to play in Saturday’s Two Ball Ambrose at Wallangarra.

Kevin Williams did well on the ninth to claim the pin shot for that hole and Mick Hurtz played a beauty to put the pin shot at 11 beyond dispute.

The other pin shots went begging.

Saturday is the Wallangarra Cafe Monthly Medal and Putting competition, and with the early forecast of snow now downgraded to severe early frost it should be a great day.

A reminder that Golf World will be sponsoring a two-ball Ambrose on 24 August - one of the biggest days on the club’s calendar - make sure you pencil that date into the diary.

SPORTERS BACK IN ACTION SPORTERS enjoyed a Sunday off last weekend with the course tied up for the Landmark Golf Day which was a big success. When last Sporters played, Mick Doorley was in winning form.

Runner-up was Angelo Maugeri with Bruce Green and Dick Hilton in the Rundowns. Best gross was won by Bob Watts, Chook Played a top shot to claim the 12th. Pin and Terry Byrnes took out the 17th.

Wattsy was at his best again to win the propin.

Sporters are back in action this weekend with an 8am tee off and watch out because I hear the boss is back - president Ray to return from holidays. Best be on your best behaviour.

MIXED BAG FOR BALLANDEAN RESULTS from last weekend’s football fixtures were like a mixed bag of lollies last weekend some you like and some not so much.

The Junior Colts went down 2-1 to United after starting strongly. Hunter Murphy came up with a goal midway through the first half after a nice run, but United’s cohesion was superior. In a controlled performance, United netted two goals in the second half to give them the points.

The Senior Colts played a three-all draw against Warwick. Things did not begin well for Ballandean when they were forced to start the game with only nine players. A good run from Brad Knight put Ballandean on the board and in the lead before the arrival of their extra player.

The lead proved short lived when Warwick hit back with two goals. Ben Rametta levelled for Ballandean just before half time.

After the break, Ballandean regained the lead on the back of a goal from Ben Rametta. They frustrated the Warwick side for most of the second half and looked likely to take the points before they tired and Warwick snared an equaliser.

The Ladies also found themselves short of numbers but certainly not class. They put four into the back of the net before half time, thanks to Kristy Beckett, Sarah Day and Jaimee Beecham.

It was Jamiee’s first goal in the senior competition but her excitement was short lived when she rolled her ankle 10 minutes into the second half.

Despite having only nine players, Ballandean had numerous chances, however, they were unable to add to their first half score but still came away with a good win.

In the Men’s game, Ballandean set out to disrupt Warwick’s free flowing game. Warwick was under pressure early and the tactics seemed to be working as the visitors were unable to make early inroads into Ballandean’s defence. Ballandean

gan playing around 12 months ago. Success has come quickly for the 12-year-old in the regular weekly Stanthorpe competition against much more senior players.

It was no real surprise then that this talented and very committed young player has been selected to represent Queensland after finishing second overall in the Queensland State Golf championships for the Under 12 Age Group. The competition was played over four days (54 holes) at the Oxley course in Brisbane.

Hannah held her nerve throughout the testing tournament probably thanks to the experience she has gained playing against her older counterparts each weekend in the Stanthorpe competition.

Despite finishing overall second in the competition, selection in the Queensland team was not based on performance alone. A team of selectors followed the young golfers observing them on the course and how they competed and their etiquette. Hannah will compete in the National Junior championships which will be played at the Wynnum course in November.

For Hannah selection is a stepping stone to bigger and brighter things. At the moment her goal is to lower her handicap. This means more practice and more golf for this committed and talented youngster that does not look like it is going to be an issue and we can expect to hear and see more of Hannah Reeves in the future.

IDEAL CONDITIONS FOR RALLY IDEAL conditions are expected for this weekend’s Brakes Direct Border Ranges Rally in and around Kyogle Urbenville and Woodenbong.

Normally billed as the State of Origin of rallying, this year there are also a number of entries from the ACT and Victoria. They will also be joined by three entries from Townsville.

The rally begins in Kyogle on Friday night at the Kyogle Showgrounds. In the opening event, two cars at a time go head around the complex.

The action speeds up on Saturday when the crews tackle the super fast roads surrounding Woodenbong and Urbenville. Locals can get a great view

of the cars in action at the spectator points in Woodenbong.

On Sunday, the rally moves back to Kyogle for a run over stages used in the WRC and passes twice through the famous Hillyards Spectator Point.

There are several highly sophisticated all wheel drive turbo charged vehicles including Subaru WRX Stis and Mitsubishi EVO Lancers expected to compete however the real interest will be in the Classics.

BDA and RS 1800 Escorts will be up against 240 RS Datsuns, Mazada RX7s, Toyota Celicas, Nissan Silvias, and even a Triumph TR8 and of course the traditional Holden Falcon rivalry is sure to emerge.

Not all the cars are expensive ‘toys for the boys’. Young Lauren Stamford a Chartered Accountant has done her sums and runs a Lada Samara. She has Dad, Peter, navigating it, and it is doubtful there is any crew more committed to having fun.

The rally, organised by the Gold Coast Tweed Motor sporting Club, is a round of both the Queensland and New South Wales Rally Championship.

Over 130 volunteer officials help run the event. Local communities are supportive of the rally, now in its eighth year which brings muchneeded external revenue to these small communities. After a disappointing loss to the Gremlins in the Patron’s Cup, the Tigers were back to their best against the Cutters who were missing three of their strike players. The Cutters had no answers against the well organised attack of the Tigers. Jim Loneragan returned to the Tigers after his selection in the Queensland Outback side. His return was short lived after he received a nasty gash to the head - the result of an accidental head clash. A PURPLE PATCH IN PINK The Stanthorpe Gremlins will be “All in Pink” this weekend for their clash against the Killarney Cutters and they have hit a purple patch of form at the business end of the BRL season. On the back of their win in the Patron’s Cup over competition leaders Tenterfield, they had a comprehensive 8820 win over the Rams last weekend.

Captain coach Damien Petrie who suffered a niggling shoulder injury in the previous game watched on from the sidelines as his team ran all over of the Rams.

This weekend the Gremlins will be hoping to continue that form when they host the Cutters for their annual Pink Day. The Pink has become an annual tradition on the Gremlin’s calendar as the club caters for its female supporters and fundraises for the Stanthorpe Breast Cancer Support Group. The Ladies will be well catered for on Saturday -cost is $20 per head and there will be fashion parade music and entertainment, champagne and nibbles, a multi draw raffle jersey auction and a great game of football.

WARWICK BOWLS CLUB The semi-finals of the self-selected fours were played last Saturday when George Niven, Alex Naylor, Doug Christensen and Barry Johnstone defeated Gordon Assay, Neil Rickard, Peter Collis and Jim Rickard 21-14. After 12 ends, Jim’s team had led 14-5 but lost the last nine ends and the game. In the second game Tom Seaniger, Trevor Wright, Max Holder and Edwin Welsh defeated G. Creighton, Ian Campbell, Ken Bryson and Peter Gynther 23-8. Edwin’s team was able to win 15 of the 21 ends to be in control of the game throughout. The final of this competition is to be played on Saturday. The Summers’ Day last Wednesday was well attended with the winners being Greg Murphy, Kay Bloomfield and Trevor Wright and runnersup George Niven and Edwin Welsh. On Sunday social bowls were played for trophies provided by Steele’s Bakery when the winners were Bill Buckel, Brian Black and John Ruhle and runners-up B. Sheridan, Cliff Farrell and Doug Christensen.

Social bowls will be played Saturday and Sunday will again be social play for prizes donated by The Cherry Tree. For these events names are required by 12.30pm for play to commence at 1pm. Visitors and ladies and welcome on all these days.

Some of the action that will be on display this weekend at the Border Rangers rally. looked to be on the board midway through the half, only to be deemed offside and a goal disallowed. In an improved performance, Ballandean maintained their intensity in the second half.

They were rewarded when John Spiller threaded a shot through a gaggle of players. Warwick responded almost immediately scoring from a corner when Robbie Davies was left unmarked and another shortly after.

Ballandean looked unlucky not to at least level the game when Jack Elms hit the wood work and Mick Larkin missed an almost open goal. Ballandean played arguably one of their best 90 minutes of football all season but Warwick were able to hold on for a tough 2-1 win.

On paper this game looked the match of the round, and it did not disappoint. Ballandean this weekend meet Inter.

ANOTHER CLEAN SWEEP UNITED Redbacks added another clean sweep to their impressive results this season when they proved too strong across the board for Tenterfield.

In the men’s game, Tenterfield looked to have improved from their big loss to Warwick the previous week but in the end had no answers against the experience and strength of the undefeated Redbacks.

The ladies were successful 4-3 in a close game while both the Senior and Junior Colts teams were on the money winning their respective games. With finals not far away on Saturday, Tenterfield play Carlton as CF White and United host Warwick in a vital clash.

In the other A Grade Men’s clash, City put their recent loss to Ballandean behind them and came up with a 4-0 win over Inter. Striker Josh Mouws appeared to have the ball on a string as he claimed a hat-trick and helped his side to a muchneeded win. After last weekend’s win, City have the bye this week.
