Wall is set for a fall

NOOSA Coast Guard Commander John Milland is hoping there’s still a chance to pitch the memorial wall idea at Noosa spit to Noosa Council during its ordinary meeting tonight.

In what has been touted as an

unexpected division, Noosa councillors were split on the matter with the motion leaning towards denying the memorial wall, with an amendment allowing for another proposed site.

Councillors opposed to the move included Cr Tony Wellington, Cr Frank Wilkie and Cr Noel Playford.

Councillors Bob Abbot, Frank Pardon and Sandy Bolton were for the motion and Cr Joe Jurisevic abstained from the vote.

Those opposed expressed concerns with the proposed location and feared the spit becoming a future cemetery site.

Other concerns ranged from Noosa being too unique a destination to house a memorial wall at the spit and suggestions the wall should be “Noosa-fied”.

However, Cr Abbot shot back at suggestions Noosa was somehow more or less significant

than other coastal towns.

“I think it’s over the top to suggest Noosa is somehow better than other places and the Caloundra memorial wall offers just as spectacular a setting as anywhere on the coast,” he said.

Gallery plans grand finale

Artist and Harbourside Gallery committee member Dave Gilbert said he was saddened by the news, but grateful to the Noosa Marina management.

“I’m reluctant to say it’s the end of Harbourside Gallery and we’re looking at other possible locations, but it’s the end of the line for the gallery at Noosa Marina,” he said.

“We’d really like to extend our gratitude to the Noosa Marina management for allowing us the time here.

“We’d also like to wish the new business the best of luck in what has been an amazing corner space at the marina.”

Harbourside Gallery has played host to more than 30 different local artists with a varied degree of experience in both 2D and 3D media.

The gallery was described as the only venue of its kind on the Sunshine Coast where local artists could gain confidence and expose their work.

The gallery will be open as usual on Saturday 2 August and Sunday 3 August, and will farewell the venue with a party for all comers on Saturday 2 August, at 3pm.

IT’S the end of the road for Harbourside Gallery at Noosa Marina after almost four years of helping local artists find their feet.

The gallery space had been generously offered by Noosa Marina management for little more than a commission on the sale of artworks.

But the space has now been leased to Hearts and Minds Art, who will offer customers a variety of unique, locally and Australian made products.

Hearts and Minds Art owners Julie Holland and Greg Peeler said they were looking forward to joining the Noosa Marina community.

“It’s a great space for us and we’re combining our two shops at Hastings Street into one and opening our new shop at Noosa Marina,” Ms Holland said.

“We have a lot of original locally made furniture, handmade jewellery, fair-trade products and a range of Australian made and locally made products.

“We provide quality original works but we can also make our customers ideas come to life.

COUNCIL Cab users across Noosa can breathe a sigh of relief for the next few weeks at least, after council voted to defer a decision on the matter pending further research.

However, a final vote on the matter was expected tonight during the council’s ordinary meeting.

It was during the Noosa Council’s general committee meeting that councillors voted to continue but investigate the use of the Council Cab service.

Council Cabs transport people aged 60 and over from their home to specified shops or medical precincts.

The service is available one day per week at a cost of $2 one way.

A shed load of care

By JONATHON HOWARD THE Noosa Men’s Shed has revealed its new short-term location based at House with No Steps in Doonan.

The move, which is yet to be finalised under a memorandum of understanding, could see Noosa Men’s Shed members helping out disadvantage kids.

A group of more than 30 men attended the Noosa Men’s Shed meeting and barbeque on Wednesday, 23 July.

Noosa Men’s Shed president Peter Magarry chaired the meeting at the House with No Steps’ auditorium.

A house on the large property at Charles Duke Memorial Drive, off Fellowship Drive, was voted the most favourable site for the Noosa Men’s Shed.

Members of the Noosa Men’s Shed bring a wealth of experience in trades, corporate operations and the running of successful businesses.

Their skills could be invaluable to House with No Steps in promoting its services such as lawn mowing and gardening.

House with No Steps operations manager Samantha Fitzpatrick said the idea of a short-term partnership with the Noosa Men’s Shed was exciting.

“We’re extremely open to the idea and welcome the Noosa Men’s Shed

Mr Magarry said the knowledge and experience pool from the Noosa Men’s Shed would make an invaluable contribution to the House with No Steps.

“We see this partnership as helping a worthy organisation achieve its goals while also allowing our club to get established in a facility that’s ready to go,” he said.

The comments online via social media and from news networks have heaped praise on the organisers, who continued to receive a flurry of compliments.

Festival director Ian Mackellar said 2014 had been one of the most successful festivals yet with 101 per cent of budgeted ticket sales being met, in excess of 10,000 people attending ticketed and free events and 14 sold-out events.

The festival saw 240 artists and special guest performances across 35 venues sold out events including opening night Forbidden Broadway, Night of Comedy, Puccini and Fettuccini and An Evening with Queensland Ballet.

Palmer’s pay-out HE’S been called a few names in his short time as a politician, but Federal Fairfax MP Clive Palmer’s most recent label “generous giant” is a front-runner for the most positive.

Mr Palmer announced earlier this year that he would donate his entire Parliamentary salary - more than $100,000 - to worthy community organisations throughout his electorate. Those funds have now been released to more than 100 community organisations, from Eumundi Markets to Guide Dogs Queensland, to name a few.

The funds are being put to good use by paying bills, setting up new services or simply saving for a rainy day.

The larger-than-life character and mining magnate, who was voted into the Federal seat of Fairfax last year, said he was setting a political precedent of following through with promises.

Nation waits on sandman permit

By JONATHON HOWARD THE sandcastle man Arron McCormick has made national headlines in his push to be reinstated on Noosa Main Beach.

The highly experienced sculptor and artist is now receiving messages of support from Sydney, Melbourne and even as far away as Darwin.

The story went national on Wednesday 23 July and debate has since been raging on 2GB, Channel 7’s Sunrise program and in the pages of the Daily Telegraph.

Sydneysiders have now joined hundreds of Noosa residents voicing their support for Mr McCormick’s sandcastle sculpting and they want him permitted back on the beach.

Mr McCormick was asked by the Noosa Council’s locallaws officer to cease sandcastle sculpting for donations on Noosa Main Beach earlier this month.

It was later revealed Mr McCormick was selling photos of his sculptures which classified him as an unlawful beach vendor.

In an interview with Sunrise host Samantha Armytage, Mr McCormick said he would do whatever council wanted him to do.

“Just please allow me to get back to work and give Noosa visitors something they want and enjoy - please,” he said.

Mr McCormick has lodged an application to busk with Noosa Council and was awaiting a decision.

Last week Noosa Today received an unexpected phone call from 2GB radio presenter Chris Smith, who wanted an

update on the sandcastle story for his listeners.

Mr Smith said Noosa Council had failed to return his phone calls.

Council has refused to comment on individual permit applications and Noosa Today was directed back to Mr McCormick.

But a lack of action has prompted an online (change. org) petition entitled “Give Arron McCormick a busking permit”.

The petition had received 314 supporters by the time of print, with only 186 remaining before it can be submitted to Noosa Council for consideration.

Meanwhile, Mr McCormick and his partner are expecting a child in the coming weeks and their financial situation is only making matters worse.

Noosa Council recently reviewed beach permits on Noosa Main Beach and there may be a limit to the number of permits available.

Noosa Council has voted down a bid for a memorial wall at the Noosa spit, with a final vote expected tonight.

Wall set to fall From page 1 Cr Abbot said the idea would add value to Noosa’s community.

On the flipside, mayor Noel Playford said he would prefer to be remembered by the stories and in the minds of loved ones rather than with a plaque - similar to customs undertaken by local Indigenous people.

Cr Playford highlighted recent issues with people gluing plaques and painting images on rocks at Double Island Point in memory of lost loved ones.

“I think there should be more reflection and storytelling rather than plaques and memorial walls - I don’t think this is the right way,” he said.

Were it approved, the wall would be available to anyone in the public for a nominal fee,

with the funds being used to purchase a new sea rescue vessel.

According to Noosa Coast Guard section and media officer Ian Hall, the coast guard needs to replace one of its current rescue vessels within the next eight years.

“It might seem like a long way off, but when you’re potentially talking about $1 million roughly for a new rescue vessel, we really need to start fund-raising now,” he said.

The proposed spot overlooks an incredible seascape and was a similar design to a memorial wall in Caloundra, where plaques are mounted.

Mr Milland said the initial vote came as a shock, but he did not want to speculate on the matter until the ordinary meeting was adjourned.

NOOSA’S Councillor Frank Wilkie said he was opposed to the idea of a memorial wall at Noosa’s river mouth because there were already a number of ways to honour departed loved ones.

He has also highlighted that fund-raising for the Noosa Coast Guard could be undertaken without forever changing the look and feel of public land with permanent, hard infrastructure that symbolised life’s end.

“We don’t know if these memorials will cover the cost of the coast guard boat, in which case it won’t have served the purpose for which it was permitted to be built, but we’ve changed the feel of that public space forever,” he said in an email to Noosa Today.

“We also don’t know what the demand may be. It may be enormous and require more basalt blocks to be installed. If future councils call a halt to it because of demand for more space we’ll be left with permanent reminders in stone of a nice but ill-thought out idea.”

Cr Wilkie said the proposal was short on detail.

“Why would I want to purchase a plaque in a lawn cemetery when I can have one at the picturesque rivermouth with majestic views of Double Island Point and Main Beach?

“For that reason, I’m reluctant to support it because I don’t believe we’ve fully considered how its presence and future demand may change the look and feel of the limited public space at the river mouth to something resembling a lawn cemetery.”

Drunken driving hits home

By JOLENE OGLE “I SHOULD know the law at 52”: That was the response from one of 18 drink driving defendants who appeared in Noosa Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

But this time, many of the defendants had attended the voluntary Safe Driving Awareness Program run

by Road Trauma Services at Drysdale Funerals, last Tuesday.

The impact of the program was clear with numerous defendants reporting the two-and-a-half hour lecture, which features real life trauma stories, had opened their eyes.

A Doonan man, 52, who pleaded guilty to driving with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.124 per cent said he found the program “interesting”.

“I learnt I had better slow down and be more responsible for my actions,” he said.

“It made me think about other innocent parties on the

road. It doesn’t take much for something to go wrong.”

A certificate was issued to those who attended the Safe Driving Awareness program, and Magistrate Simon Young took the course attendance into consideration when sentencing along with other factors including an early plea of guilty, traffic history and a person’s circumstances.

The 52-year-old Doonan man, who faced a 10-month disqualification, was disqualified from driving for six months and fined $500.

A 20-year-old Noosa Heads woman, who pleaded guilty to driving with a BAC of 0.062 per cent, also attended the Safe Driving Awareness course and said the lecture “opened her eyes”.

She was fined $250 and disqualified from driving for one month.

Kind hearts warming up world

By JONATHON HOWARD THE world needs more kindness and an innovative school program is helping young kids learn the invaluable benefits of having a big heart.

The Kindness Club at Cooroy State School is a program outside school hours that was formed in April this year by teachers Wendy Scott and Lisa Hill.

Ms Scott said the pair both loved random acts of kindness and the feeling it gave when you showed kindness to others.

“So we thought it would be wonderful to share this with the children,” she said.

The students from all year levels meet once a fortnight to brainstorm ideas centred on the club’s theme “kindness”.

“Chris invited our club to be part of the Little Helpers campaign to collect groceries,” Ms Scott said.

The kids have since embraced the grocery challenge with enthusiasm and of course big hearts.

The campaign will end tomorrow (1 August) with the students having raised dozens of boxes of food for those in need.

Labor eyes Noosa SUNSHINE Coast paramedic Mark Denham says he’s ready to take on LNP member for Noosa Glen Elmes for the seat of Noosa after he was named the Labor candidate to contest the seat in next year’s State Government election.

Mr Denham said he has an up-hill battle in the historically LNP stronghold of Noosa, but he was up for the task and feels change is in the wind.

“The Sunshine Coast has always been an LNP stronghold and I think it needed a bit more of a voice, so I put my hand up,” he said.

Mr Denham has been a paramedic for the past 35 years including 10 years as a paramedic in Noosa.

He lives in Cooroibah and, along

with his wife, has raised four children who attended Tewantin State School and Sunshine Beach High.

If elected in the state election next year, likely to be in March, Mr Denham said improving road infrastructure and allied health were at the top of his to-do list.

“Roads are always an issue coming in and out of Noosa they require a lot of upkeep,” he said.

“Hospitals, with an ageing population, infrastructure around assistance to older people need to be enhanced in our area.”

Mr Denham said residents were fed up with LNP premier Campbell Newman and voters were seeking change.

“Strong Choices was a joke - to ignore the people’s choice not to sell assets was misguided and Newman will pay for it,” he said.

Mr Denham spoke highly of current Noosa MP Glen Elmes, but said he was ready to battle him on policy.

“It’s not a personal thing between Glen and I, I actually acknowledge Glen’s hard work in the community, but it’s about policy and that’s where I plan to make my campagin felt the most,” he said.

“I think closing of the Tewantin TAFE was a bad move and the job market in Noosa is also in desperate need of reviewing,” he said.

THE shooting down of Maylasian Airlines flight MH17 has sent shockwaves through the community as efforts to access the wreckage remain on hold.

A total of 28 Australian residents and citizens were among 298 victims of flight MH17, which was shot down by a missile strike over Ukraine on 17 July.

As a message of support and compassion for the families of those victims onboard, Noosa MP Glen Elmes has offered a condolence book for Noosa residents to sign.

The condolence book is available at Mr Elmes’ office at the Noosa Civic and residents have already started taking up the offer.

“This is an opportunity for the community to let those affected by this tragedy know that they are not grieving alone and that all Queenslanders are thinking of them during this sad time,” Mr Elmes said.

The condolence book will be sent to the Premier’s department for collation and presentation to the next of kin and families.

The final day to sign the condolence book will be Friday 8 August.

Council’s boundary clash

By JONATHON HOWARD THE Sunshine Coast Council has made a pre-emptive strike against a push to include Doonan, Eumundi, Verrierdale and Weyba Downs into Noosa Council.

Sunshine Coast Council mayor Mark Jamieson said any further changes to council’s boundaries would not be in the best interests of the residents of the Sunshine Coast.

“This region has already gone through amalgamation and deamalgamation - and all the uncertainty and division they brought with them,” mayor Jamieson said.

“Enough is enough, this region deserves the opportunity to get on with the job without any further destabilisation,” he said.

But EDV president Johanne Wright said the argument was now about democracy and hit back at Cr Jamieson’s comments.

“It does not matter if you are for or against a boundary change- this pre-emptive move by the mayor is designed to rob the residents in this area of the opportunity to have their say. It makes no sense at all,” she said.

Cr Jamieson cited several reasons to oppose the boundary change including further disruption to our community, potential to erode business confidence in the region and what he said was already creating division, instability and uncertainty between communities in the region.

“The Minister for Local Government will now be informed of the unanimous decision at today’s Sun-

shine CoastCouncil meeting,” Cr Jamieson said.

“In two conversations I have had with the minister on this matter, he has advised me he will only refer the proposal by the EDV Group to a Change Commission if the proposal has the support of both the Noosa Shire and Sunshine Coast councils.”

Cr Jamieson said the EDV suburbs had been serviced, supported and resourced by his council and its predecessors since 1912.

“And we want them to remain a vital part of the Sunshine Coast community,” he said.

“This region - and this council should be allowed to get on with the job of creating one of the best places in Australia to live, work, play and invest - without being constantly subjected to the uncertainty and disruption that boundary changes produce.”

However, Ms Wright has hit back at Cr Jamieson saying there were good grounds for a minor boundary re-alignment that could benefit both councils.

“Why do they not want to hear that,” she said.

“The best outcome for all is for an independent boundary change commissioner to consult with the community and the councils and make an informed decision based on clear unbiased evidence of what the community wants.

“To proclaim that a small per cent of the community (2 per cent) debating the pros and cons of a boundary change is destabilising the whole of the Sunshine Coast is ludicrous.

“Boundary changes are a part and parcel of local government governance and there are many examples of such changes being made without any disruption to the community at large - it is not a de-amalgamation process which is very, very different.

“It smacks of desperation - what has the council to lose by allowing the process to go through - we are prepared to accept the decision of the umpire - why not the council?”

Ms Wright said she would not pull back from the move.

“We are not going away and will continue to consult with our community and will not be cowed by a council that rides roughshod over its residents. In fact, it makes our case for moving to Noosa even more compelling.”

Meanwhile, State Member for Noosa has spoken in support of the EDV re-boundary bid.“I support the joining of EDV with Noosa Council provided that Noosa and Sunshine Coast Councils can agree on a fair process which considers the needs of all residents,” Mr Elmes said.

“I was disappointed to hear that Sunshine Coast Council decided last week to oppose the merger, even before considering a submission from the EDV group.

“That’s as undemocratic as anything Labor did under Beattie and Bligh,”he said.

Staff fire drill for paper THREE minutes is all it takes for a fire to destroy your home or business and not having a fire plan can be life threatening.

That’s why staff from Noosa Today were put through their fire training on Wednesday 23 July, by experienced fire preparation and prevention expert Russell Mayne.

Mr Mayne is a Tewantin local and operates North Coast Fire Protection.

He is qualified to equip staff members and residents with a fire safety plan, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, evacuation plans and fire blankets - but he’s also an expert on the unseen fire dangers.

One of Mr Mayne’s lesser known tips was: “never put water on an oil fire”.

“If you have a fire on the stove in oil, for example, the last thing you want to do is throw water on it,” he said.

“Because oil floats the fire will spread and

I’ve seen cases where an oil fire has exploded from thrown water.”

Mr Mayne said the best option would be to put the lid back on the pot - “if it’s safe to do so”.

“Or use a fire blanket to cover the oil and starve the fire of oxygen,” he said.

Mr Mayne spent almost two hours demonstrating the dangers of fires and some of the more silly responses to fire hazards through a video presentation.

He also gives participants the chance to use fire extinguishers and put their new skills to the test.

Report comes clean on waste that 9723 properties took part in the clean-up, that’s two out of every five properties in the Noosa Shire.

Ten trucks and forklifts were involved, operated by 19 Cleanaway staff who collected 1500 tonnes of material, nearly three times as much as the last collection in 2009.

Some 315 tonnes of that was metal sold to recyclers for $59,000, with the money returned to the council and contractor.

The kerbside bulk rubbish collection became a rallying cry for Free Noosa supporters, an example of what had been lost when our council was amalgamated. Now the service is back, apparently to stay, but with some issues to ponder for the future.

Kerbside collection needs some fine tuning, says council.

Many people ignored warnings about dumping prohibited material such as asbestos, batteries, tyres and mattresses, and the culprits often left them in front of other people’s homes.

There were complaints about

the seven weeks it took to conduct the entire clean-up, but this was explained by the huge amount of waste that residents had been waiting to get rid of. In his report, Mr Barnes suggested contractors could prioritise high profile roads next time, so

A REPORT on Noosa’s recent kerbside bulk waste collection shows the popular service was a huge success, but there are lessons to be learned about how it might be done better next time.

Among the issues to be tackled in the future are those of people dumping mattresses, tyres and other prohibited material on the kerbside, people dumping useful items like working white goods instead of delivering them to not-for-profit groups, and residents from the neighbouring Sunshine Coast Council area dumping their unwanted goods on Noosa streets.

The Salvation Army and Brite Side Industries also reported a big drop in useful items for resale through the period, apparently because many people thought it easier to leave things in front of their homes rather than have them delivered to not-for-profit organisations.

Mr Barnes also recommended that electronic waste should be collected by a separate truck so it can be protected for recycling, and that green waste should be excluded from the free service because it becomes contaminated. Instead, people should be encouraged to use the green waste bins all year round.

INBRIEF Smoking in cars LOCAL police have been praised for their observation skills after a woman was fined for smoking with a child in the car, last Friday. The recent fine serves as a timely reminder of the smoking laws that came into effect in January, 2010, which ban anyone from smoking in vehicles carrying children under 16 years. Noosa Heads officer in charge Senior Sergeant Steve McReight said it was the health of the children involved that the police worried about. The offence carries a fine of $227.

The woman was also fined for driving without a licence.

Beach Blitz MORE than 560 random breath tests were conducted and 23 tickets issued in a weekend blitz on Noosa’s North Shore.

Of the tickets issued, one person was fined for driving more than 20km/h over the speed limit, four people were caught driving more than 13km/h over the limit and eight people were doing at least 13km/h over the speed limit. Two defective vehicle notices were issued, one person was caught driving with a low blood alcohol level, another person was caught driving while drinking, and one driver was fined for driving without proper control of the vehicle. Sen Sgt McReight said it was important to remind drivers that North Shore beach is considered a road, so all road rules apply. An increase in patrols of Noosa North Shore is planned for the coming weeks and high peak times with night patrols and unmarked vehicle patrols to be included.

Coolum Police Station A COOLUM man has been slogged with a $1600 repair bill after pleading guilty to smashing the glass of the Coolum Police Station earlier this month. Noosa Magistrates’ Court heard Timothy Hogan, 33, was drunk when he kicked the doors out of anger following a fight with his girlfriend.

In what Magistrate Simon Young called a “matter of oops”, Hogan said he didn’t realise he was attacking a police station until after the incident.

Gold, gold, gold in Glasgow THE great Norman May shouted the cry ‘’Gold, gold gold… that’s gold for Australia”, when Neil Brookes touched first for Australia’s medley relay swim at the Moscow Olympics in 1980.

Now I am going to use the same sentence but add another two gold for the Sunshine Coast athletes competing in Glasgow this week.

Noosa’s sprint queen Brittany Elmslie has been simply magnificent, already bagging two relay gold and one bronze.

She was an afternoon team member for the 4 x100 freestyle but her effort in the 4 x 200 free stamped her future position as one of the greats of Australian swimming.

There’s no flight in jetty fight

By JONATHON HOWARD NOOSA pensioner Kevin Driscoll says the fight to save his jetty at the corner of William Street and Gympie Terrace is not over, despite having removed a temporary structure this month.

Mr Driscoll had been taking a oneman stand against Noosa Council on top of the jetty’s pylons.

He claims council is liable for damages to the jetty’s timber decking following a major flood last year, in which the adjacent footpath shifted towards the jetty and impacted several pylons.

Mr Driscoll had stepped up his campaign by chaining himself to the jetty’s remaining pylons and demanding the State Government intervene.

The matter is now with the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection.

“I made the decision to remove the temporary timber decking to allow the State Government to investigate the matter,” he said.

“The Department of Environment and Heritage Protection has thanked me for removing the (temporary) structure and they are working through the matter.”

Mr Driscoll said he was attempting to prove liability on the part of the former Sunshine Coast Council or current Noosa Council.

“Everyone acknowledges that the jetty was impacted by the shifting of

“Councillors have seen it and acknowledged it; residents who signed my petition can see it, so why will council not admit the footpath caused the jetty’s pylons to shift and subsequently dislodged the timber decking,” he said.

Mr Driscoll said he had several independent engineers reports which he said proved his theory and he had supplied these documents to the State Department.

Mr Driscoll said he wanted to thank

all those local residents who visited him during his protest.

“I’ve had a lot of people ask me ‘where have you gone’ and ‘have you given up the fight’,” he said.

“The answer is ‘no’ I haven’t given up and I’m awaiting feedback from the State Department in the coming days.

“In the meantime, I’d like to thank all those who signed my petition and who continue to support me during this time.”

A LOCAL photographer is calling all Noosa families to take part in a special photography project that will raise muchneeded funds for the Make A Wish Foundation.

Tim Roberts wants to photograph local families enjoying the Noosa landscape as part of a coffee table book to help raise funds for the charity that recently announced an end to overseas trips for sick children due to a lack of funding.

Previously a portrait and wedding photographer in Sydney, Tim and his family moved to Noosa more than nine years ago where Tim fell in love with the local landscape.

“It’s just so beautiful here and such a wonderful place to raise a family,” he said.

table style book plus have the option to buy the photo of your special family moment.

All proceeds raised from the photography fee will be donated directly to the Make a Wish foundation, while 5 per cent of book sales will also be donated to the charity.

Tim said the idea came from both his love of the local landscape and a desire to use his passion to help support a worthy cause.

“I am really passionate about helping children, and the Make a Wish foundation has done some great things and I want to help,” he said.

Tim hopes to raise over $3000, with the help of local families. There are only 50 places available in the book.

Mother Nature turns it on MOTHER Nature turned on the weather for the St Andrew’s Anglican College students as they planted over 300 trees on Friday.

The planting day was part of National Tree Day activities with all 585 primary school students planting a tree with the help of the school’s sustainability team, made up from staff and senior students.

The 330 trees planted on Friday will act as an informal offset against the carbon emissions produced by the Year 6 cohort’s trip to Canberra in September for studies of the government and national history.

Event organiser Sue Bambling said it was important to teach children to appreciate nature at a very young age.

“National Tree Day is a perfect opportunity for children to play a hands-on role in protecting the environment,” she said.

Celebrating National Tree Day is part of the college’s overall environmental strategy that also includes the development of a community sustainable garden, environmental education, energy efficiency and beach clean-up activities to reduce the amount of plastic entering the ocean.

National Tree Day was established by Planet Ark in 1996.

It is now Australia’s biggest community tree-planting and nature care event and since its inception more than 2.8 million people have planted 20 million seedlings across the country.

Butterflies go snap-happy

By JOLENE OGLE THE Noosa Civic Woolworth’s was swarming with butterflies last week as the Sunshine Butterflies did their best to snap as many shoppers with Dick Smith products as possible.

The snap-happy campaign is part of Dick Smith’s nation-wide charity funding giveaway, which will see at least $1 million donated to 75 not-for-profit community organisations.

Sunshine Butterflies, located in Noosaville, provides day programs for people with disabilities and their families. The organisation is currently leading the competition with hundreds of snaps of people with Dick Smith

products already submitted.

A point is earned for every photo submitted, with double points for a photo of 10 or more people.

Noosa Civic Woolworths and other local stores, including FoodWorks, are happy to help the charity get a head start on the competition by stacking a shelf with Dick Smith products and letting Sunshine Butterflies get busy snapping.

Sunshine Butterflies founder Leanne Walsh said her husband was so keen to win the top prize of $50,000 the Dick Smith marketing team phoned to ask him to stop sending photos of the family dog with products.

“We received a call ...

asking him to ease up on the photos of the family dog stating you were not allowed to submit photos of animals and in particular, so many shots of the same dog posing in different positions with products,” she said.

“However, they did compliment him on his keenness to increase our vote count!”

Leanne says the top prize is just what the charity needs to relocate as the building they currently occupy is up for sale.

Leanne said she would love to buy a local hobby farm so kids, teens and young adults could come and enjoy the benefits of animal care and horticulture therapy.

Crap TV HOW do you go about telling intelligent people that they are idiots and that I believe is the case with the free-to-air TV executives in this country.

They themselves earn enough to be able to watch Foxtel or Austar unlike a lot of us that don’t have that luxury (I wonder if they actually watch their own station).

I’m on about the lack of golf on our TVs, they were magnanimous enough to let us see the US Masters.

But that’s it - hasn’t anyone told them that there are five major (golf) tournaments every year. Not the least of which is the British Open, the oldest and most prestigious golf tournament in the world.

And what do we get, repeats of Masterchef, X Factor, the Biggest Loser and all the rest of the shows they repeat - three or four times just in case you missed it the first two times.

Then we have all these new home-shopping and infomercial channels selling things that we can’t afford anyway, (unless we use our credit cards).

How long will it take for these people to get it through their heads that there are hundreds of thousands of Aussies that would love the chance to support and watch our elite Aussie

Not such a gas MANY years ago before de-amalgamation, I wrote to Noosa Council about the reverse parking in Maple Street, Cooroy, and the carbon monoxide from cars going into cafes and shops. Please council, look at this problem in Cooroy. Reverse parking should be changed to front-in angle parking. Our health is very important. Back-in holds up all the traffic.

Enlightened times IT WORRIES me that in this age of supposed enlightenment and scientific understanding, this paper continues to publish the discredited views of anti-science trolls who attempt to shed doubt on global warming as if it were being “fair” and offering space to both sides of an argument. Would this paper be as willing to air opinions that the Earth is the centre of the universe or that it is 6000 years old, or that vaccinations somehow cause autism? I doubt it. It would make the paper cheap because people couldn’t read it with the confidence that writers knew something about which they were writing. These issues are no longer debatable.

The case with global warming is the same thing. It is no longer debatable. What we do about it might be debatable but not the fact of it. I have attached a graph of data collected by NOAA that clearly shows that though 1998 was very warm, there have been two warmer years since then. This, of course has been stated by numerous correspondents to this paper but perhaps a graph published by you might put this argument to rest.

It is true that the rate of increase has decreased, but the temperatures continue to go up and when the temporary conditions currently slowing this rate, such as solar lows and prevailing winds, fade, the rate will pick up the temporary slack.

Viv Forbes (Noosa Today 24 July) was correct that CO2 levels were much greater during the time of the dinosaurs. It should be noted that there were only a very few mammals on Earth then and certainly no humans. The CO2 levels right now are 20 per cent higher than 50 years ago and higher now than any other time that the genus Homo has been on the Earth.

As well, the ice core samples, to which Viv referred, demonstrate that the rate of increase in CO2 experienced now is many times more than ever experienced on Earth.

Research demonstrates that even though some, but not all, groups of plants grow faster and more luxuriantly with higher levels of CO2, their nutritional value decreases propor-

tionally. This is because CO2 levels are not the limiting factor to their growth potential.

The danger that global warming and associated climate destabilisation pose to global food security, species diversity and social structure should really be taken seriously. Viv Forbes’ letter demonstrates that having too little information is dangerous. She shares a great deal with our Prime Minister.

Chain of pain WE CAN almost set our clocks by the CourierMail running an article on cyclists. There is one due in the very near future actually. I am disappointed that all the anger and name-calling seems to be moving to beautiful, relaxed Noosa. There was a call last week to stop pandering to these “lycra-clad yobbos.” When a person attacks another based on what they wear or look like, it’s usually a lack of education that prevents them from using more relevant and meaningful terminology. Furthermore, Noosa and the Sunshine Coast seems to have a far bigger problem with people drinking and being under the influence of drugs, texting and phoning, tailgating and lifting fingers, all while driving. Not to mention speeding, intolerant, bad-mannered and selfish drivers all around Queensland. “Lycra-clad yobbos” seem to me to be a minor problem. Just remember, when it’s all said and done, a driver’s momentary anger, impatience and frustration could take away a father or mother from young children, someone’s sister, brother, son or daughter. Who would want to live with that? Cycling works well enough in other countries, why not here?

Because of pure selfishness. Who are the real yobbos?

Moving on I AM so glad the the Sunshine Coast Council decided to disregard the EDV group beat-up and move on to real important issues. The 30 or so people who form the EDV group started to really believe their own spin and propaganda and forgot the most important part of their survey was that 94 per cent of the EDV population ignored or refused to do the survey and are quite happy with the Sunshine Coast Council.

Even the Noosa Council, who paid for that survey have kept very quiet and must be really embarrassed to waste precious money on such an amateurish, useless survey.

I’ve lived in this area for more than 20 years and most locals don’t feel the need to change anything.

Doonan - The pic of the golden triangle, has always been well looked after and looks fantastic.

Eumundi - A gorgeous town with worldfamous markets which doesn’t need the elitist Noosa brand.

Verrierdale - Here we are very happy with councillor Steve Robinson and the SCC for their constant support against the quarry and for spending over $3 million on sealing Doonan Bridge east road which has made our lives better and safer. Keep in mind that if we were

with Noosa Council, even if they wanted to, there is no way they could afford to spend that sort of money with their much smaller budget.

The EDV group should refocus their time and energy on more important issues, and stop wasting their time, and ours.

Watch the dollars THE article ‘Give Us Our Cash’ (Noosa News, Friday, 25 July) raises many concerns in regard to Noosa Council. Councillor Wellington appears unaware that Mayor Playford made himself ‘responsible for the budget’ as he calls on staff to review the council’s investment strategy. Even more concerning is that Mayor Playford, personally responsible for the budget, didn’t know where 20 per cent of ratepayers’ cash investments were being held by council.

This builds on the growing concerns of many ratepayers in regard to council finances and the true ‘total’ costs of establishing the new Noosa Council. Playford continues to quote $2.75m as the de-amalgamation cost, which is laughable when considering their budgets. Clearly he doesn’t reflect true total costs but rather some arbitrary State Government timeline that ended before Christmas. The struggling computer system alone will have cost more than that before end of year. The significant shifting of money in the recent ‘Budget Review’ is a further concern, identifying millions of dollars of previously unbudgeted expenses.

In the same paper Cr Playford took critical aim at the Commonwealth Bank financial services fiasco which at its core was all about their financial advisers shifting money to hide the real situation from clients and to get personal credits from those actions. A statement from the Commonwealth Bank pleads “We reiterate our apology for the past events. The group has worked openly and transparently with the Senate Committee and ASIC.” Meanwhile Noosa Council charged unit owners higher rate increases than what was promised. The mayor made the statement “I hope people will see this for what it is, an inadvertent error that we’ve fixed quickly ... honesty and transparency is how council operates”.

Sound familiar? If the mayor and Noosa Council were honest open and transparent about councils finances including the total cost to date of establishing the new council, total borrowings and for what purpose, reserve expenditure etc, constituents might be more understanding. If not the community has every right to be as critical of the council as Playford is of the Commonwealth Bank.

IT WAS all hands on deck for the Good Shepherd Lutheran College’s performances of Little Mermaid Jr, last week.

The directors of the musical, Jim Tomkins and Hayley Yappa said the cast and crew had been busy rehearsing since October last year.

“This fantastic spectacle was the product of months of hard work and dedication on the part of the students, staff and parents,” they said.

“Our talented students have brought unflagging enthusiasm and energy to the production and we are so proud of them. It has

been rewarding seeing the growth of each individual student and the wonderful atmosphere of collaboration and camaraderie in the team.

“We hope the students will remember this experience as one of the highlights of their primary schooling.”

BY JOLENE OGLE THE WINNERS of the Queensland Master Builders Association (QMBA) have been announced with a list of local buildings taking out top honours.

The St Andrews College Pre-Prep School won the construction award for best Health and Education Facility up to $5 million.

Jeremy Marou and Thomas Busby both said they enjoyed passing on their wisdom to students and helping celebrate NAIDOC Week.

“It’s great to see students recognising NAIDOC Week,” Mr Marou said.

“Working with students was a big part of what we did before we became big and we’re determined to keep that tradition going.”

The pair has toured nationally for the past four years and their success has led to an exciting future ahead.

“It can be a tough road for a musician, but with some determination, talent and passion you really can achieve your dreams,” Mr Busby said.

“We try to instil that message in students and to help them work towards their goals in music or other areas.”

Do you plan to run again for the seat of Noosa in next year’s state elections (June 2015)? And what are some of your campaign messages?

I’m already endorsed for the election next year and yes I plan to run again. My campaign program will be similar to those in the past with a focus on positive outcomes for the seat of Noosa.

There’s a lot of work to be done on the roads, health and a number of other areas where we need to be focused. I believe in taking action to get the best results for our community - an example of this was the Noosa rugby field desperately needed new lighting and thanks to some quick action we were able to get this in place in a short amount of time.

How did your recent meeting with Minister for Transport Scott Emerson alongside Mayor Noel Playford go? Was there any interesting outcomes?

SCREAM in full force THE Noosa Heads Jazz club presents SCREAM, a collection of ex-defence musicians who know how to perform, play and entertain.

Sunshine Coast Retired and ex Armed Forces Musicians (SCREAM) was formed in 2004 when former military musicians got together to play some good music for their own enjoyment.

Previous performances in the various arms of the defence force means SCREAM can deliver a unique professionalism seen in

military bands around the world.

Now, the Noosa Heads Jazz Club present SCREAM as one of a series of concerts now at The J, Noosa Junction.

Catch SCREAM, who will “Bring on the Swing”, 16 August, from 7.30pm.

It was a very productive meeting.

The idea to introduce electric buses into Noosa’s transport network was Mayor Playford’s and I think it was a great idea.

Mr Emerson took the idea very seriously and he’s announced a study into the bus network to see how the electric buses could fit in the community. The matter around vessels in the Noosa River was also raised and it is my view that there are several (seven to eight) vessels that could be removed from the river immediately. The problem is that Noosa River is not a recognised port and we’re looking at rectifying this in the future.

Did you hear that the Labor Party has endorsed Mark Denham to contest the seat of Noosa in the next election? Do you know Mr Denham?

Yes, I was aware of Mark’s endorsement. I’ve known Mark for a long time - I was even invited to his 50th and I attended. We get along quite well and he’s a nice bloke. However, I would say Mark’s more of a union man than a Labor man, but at least Labor has endorsed a local candidate, not like last time when their representative was from Brisbane.

What are your thoughts around the bid to include Doonan, Eumundi, Verrierdale and Weyba Downs into Noosa Council?

It was tough to hear that Mayor Jamieson (Sunshine Coast Council) has attempted to block the EDV re-boundary bid during this early stage. Theses actions were similar to those imposed by Sunshine Coast Council during the de-amalgamation of Noosa Shire and because we won the election

we allowed the vote to deamalgamate - that’s democratic - but this process of pre-emptive, is that democratic? This (EDV) is not going to be easy. The process of forced amalgamations started in 2007 and we’ve had to fight to get ourselves out. Residents have to stand united and voice their views. I see a lot of passion from EDV residents to make this move and they should be allowed the choice.

AFTER a couple of days of shooting promotional footage in Noosa with Bob McTavish last week, the one-time “mayor of Noosa” well, at least its point breaks - and I thundered down the road to Alex Surf Club for a legends lunch in aid of Mark and Bev Skinner’s Board Meeting charity.

This is a wonderful fund-raising group put together by Alex Headland and Mooloolaba surfers to assist local families in need. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house when we were introduced to the little four-year-old beneficiary from last year’s Board Meeting whose rapidly deteriorating quality of life had been made more bearable by the purchase of a mobility chair.

The lunch itself, hosted by John Charlton, provided a leisurely opportunity to catch up with old mate Mark Warren and have yet another dig at him for being the only member of the Bronzed Aussies promotional outfit who wouldn’t wear a black jumpsuit back in the ‘70s, and for both of us to take the mickey out of McTavish again.

But the greatest part of the afternoon, for me and I suspect many in the audience who know their local surfing history, was the reunion of the Hayden Surfboards crew from 1964.

It hadn’t been planned as such, but here at Alex, across the street from the old Hayden factory, 50 years later almost to the day they met, were the key elements of the place that turned out the finest performance surfboards in Queensland in the mid-1960s.

Bob McTavish, the shaper, Bob Cooper, the glasser, and Hayden Kenny the boss. Only sanders Algy Grud and Russell Hughes were missing, both dead. The survivors are all over 70 now, and Coops and Hayden don’t get much change out of 80, but sharp as a tack and as funny as ever.

Hayden, who was probably the first boardrider to surf Noosa’s points in 1957, went on to become Australia’s first ironman champion and a pioneer in helicopter beach rescues, as well as one of the greats of surfboard production.

Oh, and son Grant wasn’t a bad waterman either. Californian beatnik Coops gave up dope and went back to the faith of his family and has remained committed while raising a family and enjoying a highly successful business and creative career, and still surfing until very recently.

McTavish is still the biggest name in Australian surfboards and the smallest guy in the line-up, not to mention one of the great characters of our culture.

Apology I WANT to apologise to the many readers who were deeply offended by my recent flippant remarks about brush turkeys and how I wished they would all die or at least go away. These were callous and uncalled-for remarks. Being a man of goodwill, of course I wish no harm to these or any other of God’s creatures that think they own the place and prance around ripping up your garden and crapping on your car.

Although I did make brief mention in my previous article of people eating them, we all know that the brush turkey is a protected species. I respect that, and they’re also very hard to catch. However, should one happen upon a recent roadkill - and God knows they’re not very sensible in the traffic - the following may be of interest, courtesy of Jamie Oliver, who says: “No-one will recognise leftover turkey once it’s jazzed up in this spicy chilli with attitude.”

Turkey con chilli Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/gas 4. Heat a few lugs of olive oil in a large casserole-type pan on a medium heat. Add onions, carrot, leek, peppers and chillies, and cook, stirring occasionally, for about five minutes. Add coriander stalks, cumin and paprika, and cook for

another 10 minutes or so, stirring frequently until soft and delicious.

Shred the turkey meat off your carcass and roughly chop it. Add a good pinch of salt and pepper to the pan of vegetables, then add the turkey and take the pan off the heat. Add tomatoes and chickpeas or butter beans and stir everything together. Pop it in the hot oven for two hours.

While that’s cooking, make your guacamole by blitzing one of your avocados in a food processor with the tomatoes, onion, garlic, chilli and coriander. Take the chilli out of the oven and scrape all the gnarly bits from the edge of the pan back into the chilli for added flavour.

Scatter over your remaining coriander leaves and some finely sliced fresh chilli if you fancy then get everyone to tuck in.

By JOLENE OGLE THE Cooroy RSL is urging diners to “put down the phone” as they host a Phone-Free Feast fundraiser on 7 August, to help raise money for brain cancer research.

Cooroy RSL event organiser Elaine Williams said the club decided to hold the night after realising there were no Phone-Free Feasts in the local area.

Ms Williams said she had a personal tie to brain cancer, with her stepdad having passed away from the disease.

According to the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation, around 1600 people are diagnosed with brain cancer in Australia annually and about 1200 die from the disease every year, with children being the most affected.

Ettamogah Pub turning 25 THE iconic Ettamogah Pub is celebrating its 25th birthday this year and has entertained locals, tourists and many a pub enthusiast during its history.

Ken Maynard, the creator of the Ettamogah Mob, the cartoon that was the inspiration behind the Ettamogah Pub, epitomised the larrikin humour of everyday life.

The Chevy was restored, painted and delicately lifted into place by a crane to the top of the pub. The ‘other’ story about the Chevy is that it was washed up on the roof in a flood and none of regular barflies could be

bothered to get it down – your choice as to what version you believe.

Locals and visitors love to see the history that’s collected inside the pub.

The competitors line up for the 2014 Autobarn Noosa Hill Climb.

THE Autobarn mid-year hill climb was another roaring success, with more than 120 entrants and hundreds of spectators making the most of perfect winter weather.

Run over two days, the hill climb brought together car enthusiasts, one impressive racing track and a stack of show cars for one fun, family event.

Other than the races, spectators seemed to love walking through the pits, getting up close and personal with the machines and their drivers.

There were no big spills over the two days of racing but man-of-the-moment Daryl Watt set a new record when he conquered the hill in his Force chassis, Hayabusa powered openwheeler in an impressive 51.5 seconds.

The NSW native can now enjoy full bragging rights until the end of the year hill climb.

UNDER-11 BLUE the boys put in a valiant effort this week having only one reserve but sadly went down to Caloundra. Best on ground went to Dane Fielding-Smith for his incredible kick returns and Liam wright for his take of a high ball under extreme pressure.

UNDER-11 goLD the boys played Beerwah Blue this week with both teams putting on a great display.

UNDER-12 BLUE the Blue team travelled to Beerwah for a Friday night game under lights. the boys did a brave job in the first half holding the Bulldogs out for seven straight sets. Special mention to Jesaiah harris for 19 tackles

and Beau henderson for nine hit ups.

UNDER-13A Unfortunately the boys started the second half with 12 players and ended up with 11 by the end of the game which allowed Kawana to run away with the game, but only on the scoreboard. if the boys had any doubt they could not compete with the best teams in the comp they should be blown away now because if they reproduce that type of football they will beat any team.

UNDER-13C this week the U13Cs played Kawana. getting a good start to the game they scored first and with that they didn’t stop. good defence wins games and the boys showed that. tries went to Chase McChesney (3), Corey Mackenzie (2) and conversions to Jamie gollagher, Jake Smith and Corey Mackenzie all getting one each giving victory to Noosa. Man of the Match went to Clayton townsend.

UNDER-14 goLD gold came up against Nambour this week in a tough game - Nambour being a very good team. it was a great game of footy to watch from both teams, with Noosa taking the victory.

UNDER 15 the team travelled up the highway to take on gympie. the boys were unable to defeat the Devils, but a big thanks to Blake wilson and tremaine woods for stepping up from the 14s and helping out. Both boys were outstanding with tremaine being man of the match.

Charlie went coast to coast from the kick-off and inspired a fightback which eventually secured a draw. Stirling and Angus combined well to score memorable tries as did Darcy Noah and Conor, Jaxon ran well with ball in both hands and Jax’s haul of eight tackles grows his reputation as a future fullback. Zac’s commitment is never doubted as he again put his body on the line for the team. Domino’s Pizza Player of the Match was Charlie harmer.

U8 REDS 20 DREw NooSA whitE 20 Captain Byron had a solid game, improving as the game went on making some great breaking runs. Big will was in position and was there when needed to push forward and drive out the whites to secure the ball. Domino’s Pizza Player of the Match Remi, took opportunities when they came his way, went forward and pushed hard in the contacts to win the ball for our backs. oscar’s cover defence was impressive as well as the big run forward rewarding the team with a try. A wrist injury had oz on the bench for a while but courageously came back on to finish the game strong. A strong game from Kaleb making much improved tackles and getting in amongst it to secure the ball. Mack scored, side-stepping his way through with minutes to go. Finnbar played hard, quickly chasing to tackle, then scored a tough forward’s

try. Atticus had a solid game with one try, great cover defence and skilful clearing out. Joch put his body on the line performing low tackles and darting runs.

ON Friday evening at the Mooloolaba Surf Life Saving Club, branch officials and delegates from all surf clubs on the Sunshine Coast gathered for the Annual 2013/14 Awards of Excellence Dinner.

For two clubs - Sunshine Beach and Noosa Heads - the fact that they headed home with some of the major awards made it an enjoyable evening. For Sunshine it was indeed memorable for their club was the recipient of one of the major awards when club captain Scott Summers was named the Sunshine Coast Club Captain of the year.

“It is a nice feeling to be recognised,” said Summers.

“But without the support of the club and management it wouldn’t be possible.”

When looking at all the clubs on the coast and acknowledging the responsibility that goes with running them, and in particular maintaining a high standard of patrolling, to be named the captain of the year is indeed a high honour - and in this case well deserved.

Sunshine’s other award was another major - Surf Sports Team of the

Year for the Under-17 Patrol Competition Division - and this has capped off a great season for Sunshine.

Coached by Johanna Redwood, the team not only won the branch championship but the state and national as well. A truly outstanding performance.

Over the hill at Noosa they also took their share of awards, with the major trophy being the Youth Development Club of the Year. As has been said many times the future of lifesaving, not only in our community but through the commonwealth of Australia depends on our youth.

This award shows that the Noosa club is definitely heading in the right direction, and with the current youth development programs, the club’s future looks good.

The Lifesaver of the Year awards went to; Senior Dan Capps, Under-18 Rebecca Cooper-Tregoning, Under-14 Maggie Glassock and for the Directors of Junior Activities on the Sunshine Coast David Glasock took the honours.

It was indeed a proud evening for the Glassocks with both David and daughter Maggie being acknowledged for their outstanding contributions.

“It is indeed an honour to receive this and I would like to thank all my support team,” said David.

“It just goes to show you don’t have to be big… this must surely rate them amongst Australia’s best.” Daughter Maggie was also over the moon.

With regard to her immediate future Maggie said, “I want to work with the nippers photographing their activities, water safety and in general help wherever I can.”

In other good news for Noosa former member Clint Irwin has returned to the fold. Clint started his career in the Noosa Nippers in the 1980s and in 1990 made club history when as a

cadet he became the first member to win a gold medal in a water event at a national titles - North Wollongong NSW and the event was the cadet board race. Clint will be a welcome addition to the Noosa Coaching Panel.

Last weekend in Hawaii, Noosa’s own Jordan Mercer won the Molokai 52k marathon board race for her division for a record fourth time.

Lachlan Lansdown also of Noosa finished second in the 18 to 29 year age group. Well done to both.

SEVEN Noosa Masters Swim Club swimmers are jetting out today to join Eulah Varty, based on Vancouver Island, to contest the 16th biennial World Masters Swim Championships in Montreal, Canada, for eight days of competition from 3 to 10 August.

Eulah swims at the Noosa Aquatic Centre over the summer months, having shown a clean pair of heels to the opposition at April’s Australian championships at Rockhampton.

Robyn Selby achieved the qualifying time for 50 metres freestyle at the Noosa carnival last April, only to have shaved another 2 seconds off her personal best time since then.

Bardie Gruber’s preparation has been solid for her favoured distance freestyle events.

Quality backstroker, Adele Tucker, should do herself proud in Montreal.

Not an ideal preparation for Ian Tucker, due to a health setback throughout May, his

miraculous improvement was highlighted on 12 July, when he achieved personal best times in all five events contested at the Chandler Aquatic Centre.

Jan Croft must be quietly confident, having swum at the World Masters Champioships held at Perth in 2008, where she came away with four medals, including gold in the threekilometre open water swim.

Seasoned Bob Morse, having participated in the last three World Masters swim championships at Perth (Australia), Gottenberg (Sweden) and Riccone (Italy) knows what to produce for success, especially in his favoured backstroke events.

Good luck to the eight Noosa swimmers, who will be joining the 8500 nominations, from 20 to 100 years of age, who will undoubtedly remember the Montreal experience for a long time.

WINTER 3 PERSON CHALLENGE Division 1: Avengers (R. Gore, B. Trauer , O. Estraviz) 6 drew Chargers (K. McDonald, S. Ciercan, M. Clarke) 6. - The Chargers managed to save a draw by winning all three doubles, highlighting however just how strong their opposition was in the singles. The obvious difference though was Ony’s surprise defeat of both Kye and Sbig.

Trojans (B. Brown, T. Latimer, J. Brown) 9 d Fireballs (B. Blakemore, A. Munro, C. Barry) 3. - Trojans are cruising to an inevitable grand final berth.

Division 2: Torpedoes (S. Gardner, S. Campbell, S. Lidden) 6 drew Stingrays (J. Campbell, D. Brown, R. Yao) 6. - An indication that you cannot split these teams and results can be decided by almost a single point.

NOOSA HEADS BOWLS The annual District Pennant competition gets under way this week with Noosa’s Division-1 men facing a double header on the weekend - away to Pacific Paradise on Saturday, and at home to Mooloolaba on Sunday.

Division 3 travel to Palmwoods for a Saturday match while Division 6 will journey to Club Maroochy.

The Ladies’ Pennant gets started next Monday with the Division-2 side being hosted by Pacific Paradise, whilst Division 4 will play Kawana at Buderim. Good luck to all the teams who have been training hard.

Club chairman Bob King played a friendly singles match against Daylesford, Victoria visitor Frank Peniguel on Friday as part of Frank’s quest to gain entry in to the Guinness Book of Records for the most clubs played at in a single year. Frank’s Noosa visit made it club number 348 so far in year 2014.

The Tuesday pairs comp was won

by Richard Foulds and Walter Zemler from Bob King and New Zealand visitor John Carthy. Wednesday ladies’ winners were Deb Austin, Gill MacDonald and Ev Burns.

The runners-up prize went to Carol Studley, Odette Townson and Jacqui Chantler.Friday’s Jackpot Pairs drew a record field of 96 players. The winners were Mary Williams and Andrew McCall over Bill and Jan Burkitt. Terry Finnegan and Keith Musgrave scored a podium finish by topping the first-round loser’s pool.

The monthly Noosa 1500 series was scheduled to end in July but, due to popular demand, it will continue, with the August edition to be played on Monday, drawing a capacity list of pairs participants.

COOROY BOWLS THE beautiful winter weather has ensured good attendance on the greens. The club’s first Ladies’ Day (with men invited) was held on Thursday and is being promoted as an opportunity for the ladies to improve playing skills and learn the protocols and rules of the game in a friendly cohesive environment. The next Ladies’ Day will be held on Thursday 3 August and then hopefully each week after. The ladies play from 9.30 to 11.30 and conclude with a delicious morning tea.

Cost is $10.

Tuesday Jackpot pair’s winners were Ben French and Des Horrox, from runners-up John Sedman and Bob Bottomley.

The Saturday winners were Rosslyn Morgan and Kerry Knowles, while runners-up were Julie Ainscough, Bill Haack and Roley Hassall.

This week the club has games on Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday, while Friday afternoon from 2pm is a good time for beginners with coaching available.

- Julie Ainscough POMONA BOWLS IT was a very busy week this week at the club celebrating the King of the Mountain festival held in Pomona.

The bowling week climaxed with the King of the Mountain - a men’s fours competition - held over the weekend. The winners of this closely contested competition with six wins were Joe Perren, Ralph Wells, Russell Ferriday and Tony Green, and the runner-up was Michael Sorrensen’s team.

Wednesday saw the Queen of the Mountain ladies’ fours competition which was won by the Tewantin team skipped by Robin McAnnelly -

tournament and in the final played Mooloolaba, winning a close game 19-16 at Club Kawana.

Monday (21 July) was Drysdales 69ers three-bowl pairs and the winners were D. Birt and B. De Koster from runners-up I. McCallum and P. Richardson. Coming home in third were P. Vigon and T. Howard.

Tuesday (22 July) was the John Madill Fours with winners D. Buckley, E. Elliott, S. Mould and C. Jones, from runners-up K. Stuart, T. Blake, B. Anderson and J. Bebe.

Wednesday (23 July) was the Laguna Estate Men’s pairs which was won by Bruce Roder and John Morrow from runners-up Bob Cook and David Hawksford. The Jackpot $91 was won by Hubbard and O’Rourke’s teams.

In the Queen of the Mountain at Pomona, Tewantin Noosa ladies performed well with R. McAnnelly’s team winning and P. Digby’s team coming away runners-up.

In Friday’s (25 July) Priceline Tewantin Open triples the winners were Glen Jones, Annie Ping and Phil Coman from runners-up Karen Leslie, Peter Leslie and Barry Anderson. The margin jackpot was not claimed.

A good winter catch, with river fishing truly outstanding

By JACK MANGROVE WINTER’S the perfect time to hit the river.

The fishing on the river has been outstanding with great flathead, bream and trevally right through the system. Whiting are in good numbers throughout the shallows of the Frying Pan Area and along the river foreshore. Yabbies and curried worms are some of the favourite baits for this sweet table fish. When

fishing for whiting on the flats, a little wind ripple on the water is a good thing this makes the fish feel a lot safer from overhead predators and they are happier to feed on the shallow flats. The mid to low tide is perfect as all the fish feed on food coming down river with the tide.

The bream have also been thick in the river with large schools spawning in the deeper areas. Upriver has been equally exciting with threadfin salmon taking bladed lures

like the Lure fans Rattlesnakes.

Along the beaches, chopper tailor and larger tailor have been reported on the stretch from Teewah up to Double Island. The schools have been a bit small, but the tailor have been of good size up to 3kg. Large pilchard and mullet have been the pick of the baits with fast moving spinners working as well.

Offshore, things have been going off with the deeper reefs like the Barwon Banks, The Hards and the

twenty two mile from Double Island really firing with large snapper, good cobia and nice pearlies. Float lining and large soft plastics have been working well. On the inner reefs, Chardon’s Reef, Sunshine Reef and Halls Reef have all produced some nice pan-sized snapper with sweetlip and trout thrown in as well. Make sure you get that burley happening for the best results.

have been shining lights all season and should provide plenty of excitement for Tigers’ fans over the next month or so while the Tigers’ forwards continue to cause headaches. The inclusion of Coach James Gellie after missing the first seven games has made a huge difference to the team’s chances.

Gellie, along with the evergreen Brett Duke have caused the opposition many headaches and I am sure both these boys are primed for a big one against Kedron this Saturday. Sam Dwyer and Nath Winter have found a fair bit of the pill recently so all looks set for one hell of a clash and well worth the trip down the Bruce Highway.

Well here we go, only three weeks away from finals and a conclusion that could go so many ways.

One thing is for certain though and that’s the Fiona Winter/PJ Burns Noosa Tigers will be as desperate as ever to get over Kedron this Saturday and virtually book a home qualifying final in a months’ time.

In fact this weekend’s game in North Brisbane is undoubtedly Noosa ‘s biggest game of the year thus far and a great early example of what finals pressure is all about.

Both Noosa and Kedron have met twice already in 2014 with the ledger squared at one all, with Kedron claiming the last encounter in Brisbane by a

solitary point. However, Noosa’s recent form has been outstanding and apart from a 23 point loss to flag favourites and undefeated Mayne, the Tigers are really in red hot form.

Onballers McKittrick, Isles and Davis have all had plenty of the ball over the previous six or eight weeks and together with Captain and ruckman Peter Trompf, in terrific form also all have much experience when it comes to finals pressure and atmosphere. Noosa back six have been nothing short of outstanding. The class of Buntain, the leadership of Welch, the ball winning ability of Hendrie and sureness of Wallace, Mullen and Opie has held the Tigers together the entire year.

As the old saying goes, Premierships are founded on defence and thus far these boys have not put a foot wrong.

U14 Gold: The U14 Golds had a thriller at Nambour alas going down after the siren by four points. A game witnessed by few but will be remembered as a great game. Goal Kickers: J. Ford 4, J. U8: The U8s Noosa was at home this week against Coolum Beach Blue. Noosa was out in front in the first two quarters with Coolum Beach coming back in the last two quarters making it a very evenly matched game. All the boys in the team kicked a goal, and shared the ball around. Domino’s Pizza Hot shot award went to Jack Lafferty and the Team Spirit award to Hudson Going - great game boys.

U11: In the under 11’s, it was Noosa Vs Noosa. Noosa Red got away to an early lead, but Noosa Gold kept the pressure on to go down at the final siren by less than a goal. Notable mentions for Noosa Gold were Cooper Langan with four goals, and Bella Smith with Jake Johnson dominating the centre bounce. Oscar White

was ever reliable out of the back line.

U11: Noosa Red had four U10s take the field for the first time ever in U11s and it became clear early why their coach thought they were up to the task. Blake Maxwell being awarded best on ground for Noosa Red, along with the other three U10s James Douglas, Leroy Brown and Jai Sargeant.

Lachlan Tupper and Ryan Thornton also played well to get Red across the line – just!

Ben conquers peak challenge PHYSICS student Ben Duffus clearly knows all about speed and motion as he makes it two wins out of two starts to claim the 2014 King of the Mountain crown with an impressive 23:47 time.

Over 10,000 people flocked to Pomona on Sunday for the annual Wimmers King of the Mountain Festival, a project of the Cooroy/Pomona Lions Club.

Visitors jostled for places to watch the start and finish of the main event of the day - the Bendigo Bank International Mountain Challenge - which saw competitors climb an almost vertical route and fly fearlessly back down the mountain side.

For the fifth straight year, Bendigo Bank (through its Cooroy Community Bank branch) sponsored the much-

loved and ever-popular main race, the International Mountain Challenge.

Sunshine Coast Community Financial Services Ltd (SCCFSL) board chairman Rick Cooper said he, the board of directors, the managers and branch staff, love being involved with Community Bank branches that are becoming synonymous with supporting communities and changing the banking landscape all over Australia “We have been fortunate to work with a lot of local visionaries and a lot of hard working volunteers, just like the Pomona Lions Club,” Rick said.

“The Pomona King of the Mountain Festival remains one of the best opportunities for our community to get together in the Noosa hinterland.

Who would have thought a simple bet

in a pub in 1958 would see us all there again last Sunday preparing to cheer on amazing athletes?”

Other winners of the day include veteran runner Kim Beckinsale, a PE teacher from Noosa, who took in her fourth win as the first woman to finish in a time of 31:11.

Festival chairwoman Heather Manders said that the Cooroy/Pomona Lions Club, organisers of the festival for 36 years, were delighted with the day.

“It was just great to see all our hard work come together. The Lions club puts its heart and soul into this event.

We’re all volunteers and everyone puts in an incredible effort,” she said.
