As for the centre, Mr Tanish said that life had resumed and that all was normal, with some slight changes.

“We’re back to standard operations today (Thursday 17 July), with the exception that the place isn’t very charming to look at,” he said.

The driver’s car and the white car it struck were towed from the scene with extensive damage, and Sgt Knight said both were expected to be written off.

He said that the crash had caused a great deal of panic, with the building shaking from the impact of the car, but that the staff and police had handled the situation well.

CATASTROPHE was narrowly avoided last week, when an elderly driver crashed into the side of a childcare room with babies inside, resting his car on top of a gas main.

About 11.45am on Wednesday 16 July, an 83-year-old Belgrave South man crashed into the side of Monbulk’s Cottage Child Care Centre on the corner of Monbulk Road and Menin Road, hitting two cars in the process.

The driver told police that his foot had slipped from the brake pedal onto the accelerator as he was waiting to turn out of Olinda-Monbulk Road.

As he came out towards the childcare centre, the driver hit a white car travelling towards Monbulk and a parked ute, before crashing through bollards and into the childcare centre.

The car drove through an entrance ramp and came to rest on a gas main on the side of the building, where four babies were sleeping at the time.

Monbulk police Sergeant, Mark Knight, praised the staff at the centre for their quick-thinking, evacuating the children from the buildings to the rear of the property.

Other staff members, meanwhile, tended to the man while emergency services crews rushed to the scene.

Sgt Knight said it was lucky that the man’s car - a Jeep Cherokee - did not rupture or damage the building’s gas main.

“It could have been an absolute catastrophe, with lives lost with those children, but all credit to the management and staff - they implemented their emergency evacuation management plan,” he said.

The building received significant structural damage from the crash, and owner John Tanish and his wife Karen have estimated the damage to be between $20,000 and $50,000.

The driver was taken by ambulance to the William Angliss hospital with a head injury for observation and assessment, but Mr Tanish said he had been in contact since to thank everyone for their help in the incident.

Tourism head of steam

By RUSSELL BENNETT ARGUABLY the hills’ biggest tourist attraction, Puffing Billy fittingly played host to the launch of Casey Cardinia Tourism recently.

The Gembrook station of the iconic railway is just one of a range of destinations across the south-east that will be showcased under the new tourism body.

Casey and Cardinia shire councillors were joined by Victorian state politicians and local business identities at the launch of the membership body for tourism operators located within both shire boundaries.

Casey Cardinia Tourism’s aim is to partner local tourism operators, government and allied associations together and market the local region to achieve business growth for its members and achieve economic prosperity for the region.

Speaking at the opening, chairman Ken Aldred acknowledged Casey Cardinia as “the great untapped tourist treasure of the state of Victoria” adding “we have a diverse range of wine and good food production, (and) iconic tourist attractions such as Puffing Billy here in the Dandenong Ranges through to the Royal Botanical Gardens at Cranbourne”.

“As so much of the tourist industry is based around the small business sector, it is very appropriate that Casey Cardinia Tourism should be launched by the Victorian Small Business Minister, the Honourable Russell Northe, MLA,” Mr Aldred said.

In officially launching the tourism body, Mr Northe said it would “promote some of the most picturesque pockets of Victoria, stretching from the southern hills of the Dandenong Ranges to the lower plains of Westernport Bay”.

Gembrook MP Brad Battin also attended the launch.

He said: “Tourism is an

important economic driver of small business in the Casey Cardinia region and showcases (its) enormous potential for investment and business growth.”

Puffing Billy Railway CEO John Robinson said his organisation was thrilled with the launch of Casey Cardinia Tourism.

“We see enormous potential for this whole region and we hope to be a large part of helping all of the members of Casey Cardinia Tourism to grow that organisation into a much stronger tourism presence in the region,” he said.

Cash to keep on truckin’

By REBECCA BILLS EVELYN MP Christine Fyffe personally called the Lilydale SES station controller Col Matheson last week to say his organisation had received a $100,000 grant.

Lilydale SES team leaders Louise Andrews told the Mail that the funding will be used to replace and fit out a new Road Rescue Support vehicle and that members were pleased that Mrs Fyffe had personally called to share the news.

“This will means we will have a set up for our secondary road rescues which means we

will be able to take out more manpower to rescues, carry more equipment and have more up-to-date equipment,” she said.

“We’ve always tried to maintain a very high skill level and vehicle unit so this will help us immensely.

“We are absolutely ecstatic.”

Mrs Fyffe said she is very pleased that Lilydale SES has received the grant which will enhance its emergency response capability.

“I congratulate every member of the Lilydale SES for their commitment to community

protection,” she said.

“The Napthine Government is committed to providing our emergency services with the resources and equipment they need to keep Victorians safe and support stronger local communities.”

The Lilydale SES will be opening its doors to the public on Wednesday 30 July from 7.30pm.

“Hopefully we can get some new members but this is a chance for the community to come down to station at Nelson Road and have a look to see what we do,” Ms Andrews said.

Warning to all drivers after junction bingle

By JESSE GRAHAM DRIVERS have been warned to be wary on the roads after a crash last week in Monbulk left a road blocked and two men with head injuries.

The crash took place at 2.10pm on the corner of Moores Road and McAllister Drive in Monbulk on Thursday 17 June.

Police believe that one of the cars, a sedan, had stopped and was waiting to turn out on the corner when it was in collision with a station wagon which was turning into McAllister Road.

Monbulk police Leading Senior Constable Ken Tromp said all of the people involved were able to walk away from the incident.

Ambulance officers arrived to treat both drivers for head injuries and all of the people involved, including two children in the sedan, went to hospital after the incident.

While emergency services crews tended to the drivers and police conducted interviews, passersby helped to direct traffic around the site of the crash.

Ldg Sen Const Tromp said the incident was a reminder for all drivers to take care on the roads and maintain safe distances.

“The roads are clearly marked,” he said.

The station wagon driver will be issued with a penalty notice for careless driving.

By REBECCA BILLS and JESSE GRAHAM POLICE have charged a man after a spate of attacks across Melbourne, including an attempt to make off with two caravans in Monbulk.

Sunbury police have now charged the man allegedly responsible for stealing two caravans and attempting to steal another two in Monbulk.

Detective Sergeant Mark Smithwick said as a result of media release and news coverage, a Sunbury police officer recognised a vehicle on Wednesday 16 July and intercepted a man about 8.30pm.

“He had previously seen the vehicle in a Sunbury street, he went to the street and located the vehicle along with the two stolen caravans at a

residential property and the man was there fixing one - he was arrested at the scene,” he said.

“He has been charged with eight offences including theft of a caravan and the attempted theft of caravan.”

Jonny Jovic from Scarborough, Queensland, was refused bail by an after-hours magistrate on Thursday 17 July at Sunbury Police Station.

The two caravans along with a Toyota Hilux were taken from the Pasley Street property and are currently at Sunbury Police Station.

One of the caravans has been linked back to a theft on 4 July this year in Invermay.

The other caravan has been identified as belonging to Patterson Lakes couple who had their

$50,000 caravan stolen on Thursday 10 July.

The Mail previous reported that a man had attempted to steal a caravan on Old Emerald Road in Monbulk on 30 June.

Police said the attempted theft charges relate to a caravan in Fairydale Road in Monbulk on the same day, and registration plates on a car in Rowville.

Jovic was charged with two counts of theft of a caravan, two counts of attempted theft of a caravan, theft of number plates, fitting fraudulent number plates, possessing an article for burglary, theft and cheat, two counts of possessing property being proceeds of crime and for possessing an article of disguise.

Community culture all the rage at cafe club

By JESSE GRAHAM BELGRAVE South Community House (BSCH) has been commended for working to reduce social isolation and awarded for a seven-year Cafe Club program.

The community house’s Cafe Club program began in 2007 and aims to reduce social isolation by taking residents on a weekly excursion to cafes around the hills.

BSCH received the annual award from the Community Houses Association of the Outer Eastern Suburbs (CHAOS) on 7 May. Manager Lyn Taylor said the award was a confirmation of the work the community house staff have done in recent years and in all of their programs.

She said the Cafe Club pro-

gram had begun in 2007 to address social isolation of elderly and disabled people in the community.

Ms Taylor said that since it began the program had been a great success with many people going on regular trips and forming strong friendships.

“There’s been some really good friendships formed - there is a core group that comes all of the time,” she said.

“It’s just enormous - we’ve got waiting lists now.”

She said the Cafe Club program also gives BSCH staff a chance to refer participants on to other classes and services offered by the community house, including older adults exercise classes.

ry of former Japara Neighbourhood House manager Robyn Murray who was a strong advocate in community houses for people with disabilities and mental health problems.

The Robyn Murray Memorial Organisation Award is presented to a CHAOS member who embraces and practices social inclusiveness.

The Cafe Club program runs on Mondays from 9.30am-noon and costs $5 for bus travel. Coffee is extra.

Longer day activities can also run as part of the Cafe Club, from 9.30am-3pm, and cost $8 for participants.

A CALLOUS unprovoked attack in Belgrave’s main street is being investigated by police after a woman was punched and head-butted on Wednesday 16 July at 5.30pm.

Leading Senior Constable Georgie Cooper said that the victim was walking along the main street towards Belgrave Hallam Road when she was attacked by a woman aged in her late teens.

“She was approached by a woman who then punched her and a scuffle broke out,” Ldg Sen Const Cooper said.

“While the victim received no serious injuries, she has bruising and lacerations to her face.”

She said the attacker left the scene with two people who weren’t involved in the attack.

“We are very interested to hear from witnesses and we’re going through CCTV footage now,” Ldg Sen Const Cooper said.

The attacker is described as a Caucasian woman in her late teens with blonde hair held up in a ponytail with a small build, and roughly 5’6” tall.

She was wearing a white tank top and in the company of a taller woman and a man described to be in his thirties wearing a dark hoodie.

Man cut A MAN received minor stab wounds after a family violence assault in Lilydale last week.

Police say that while the man was not hospitalised, a 39-year-old Lilydale woman was interviewed and arrested and is expected to be charged on summons in relation to ongoing domestic issues.

Seasons for the soul Focal

WHEN we experience dark wet days, long nights, flus, colds, and not enough daylight after work, we say “that is enough to depress anyone”.

True, and all of these experiences can add up to mild depression.

Counsellors call it situational depression which, in essence, is what humans go through as life.

The most common to all of us, though, are losses; through death, loss of relationships and dreams, to name just a few big ones.

The effect of these is seen in the way we grieve; some of them have an end date but others linger.

So how do we handle these dark times; pills, alcohol, denial, days off work, hibernation, or comfort food by the fire?

All of these can help but I suggest that we might look at this winter of discontent as a time for reflection and a time to do something constructive.

In our Western world mindset, we have difficulty with waiting, silence and sitting in what we can’t seem to fix - otherwise called ‘the mess’ or ‘unresolved’.

I wonder what it would look

like if we could see being laid aside from the main stream of life, due to these experiences, as an opportunity to think about the direction of our lives and think a little deeper about the bigger issues.

Sometimes the rhythms of our lives get out of sync, but most times they come and go like the seasons.

We may also see these seasons as linear - progressive stages of life that we move through.

Our weather seasons move in rotation - they follow each other in an order that is necessary for the life cycle.

Without the autumn shedding of leaves, the new growth of spring can’t come.

That growth needs spring rain, and we need summer to kill off winter germs and bring the sunlight and long days to sustain the new growth and fruit.

Winter, of course, is a time of fallow - a time of rest - a time of preparation.

Maybe we could learn from the way the seasons work.

Then we might see winter of discontent as a time to rest and reflect and from which we can draw something constructive.

After all, our creator emphasised the need for us to rest at least one day a week - he made us, so he knows what works best.

Pool fight gathers pace

By REBECCA BILLS MOUNT Evelyn community groups have been charged for using the Mount Evelyn Station House for their monthly meetings and are outraged.

However, the council has defended the charges, which, they said, came in after Morrisons left the town.

Both the Mount Evelyn Environment Protection and Progress Association (MEEPPA) and Friends of the Friends of the Aqueduct Group received bills totalling over $80 for four monthly meetings held at the Mount Evelyn Station House over May and June.

MEEPPA president Tim Heenan said he was going to fight the invoices as he believed it was just not right to charge community volunteer groups for using community facilities.

“It doesn’t cut the mustard that we have to pay to use this facility,” he said.“When I was a councillor many moons ago, I made sure that these facilities were taken care of with the utilities money that was there to ensure community groups weren’t charged.

“I know that the Yarra Ranges Council will come back with a statement saying they are duty bound to follow the set out agenda in the process of charging for use here, but it’s not like we are having a wedding or a 21st – we are passionate members and volunteers that are not getting paid.”

Mr Heenan said he did not know how the council expected groups like MEEPPA and Friends of the Aqueduct to be able to pay to use a facility to house their meetings.

“And having to pay money out to the Yarra Ranges Council for the right to be able to do that just doesn’t sit true to me.

“It is my understanding that this is now law at the council that all groups have to pay for the use of the facility after the demise of Morrisons Community House and I am not happy about it, I’m going to fight it,” he said.

Yarra Ranges Council director of Environment and Engineering, Mark Varmalis, confirmed that the charge to hold meetings at the Station House came in after Morrisons ceased its services in April.

“The cost was introduced to keep it consistent with the cost of hiring meeting space at other council facilities,” he said.

He said that the Mount Evelyn Community House had recently taken over the Station House, and that it would be up to their discretion as to whether they charge people the standard $8.10 per hour fees for hiring the space.

Mr Heenan said MEEPPA has had a really passionate and committed link with the Mount Evelyn Township since 1973.

“We are committed, we are here for the long term,” he said.“We are not going away, we just don’t want to pay for facilities that are here for the community to use.”

THE CAMPAIGN to re-open the Olinda Pool has entered its next stage, with flyers and bumper stickers made up and the council beginning community consultation.

John Faull and the Save the Olinda Pool group have been lobbying the Yarra Ranges Council to expedite the reopening of the pool, which was closed in November last year due to extensive damage.

Following the council’s decision on 8 July to begin community consultation on the pool’s future, the group decided to create flyers and bumper stickers to raise awareness of the campaign.

On Saturday 12 July, Olinda residents, James Everard, 14, and Sofia Mikulcic, 10, braved cold weather to hit the streets to sell the bumper stickers and talk about the campaign to save the pool.

In the space of four hours, the children had sold 250

bumper stickers.

Mr Faull congratulated James and Sofia, and said that children had been heavily involved with the campaign to get the pool repaired and re-opened.

“The kids are totally involved with it – they’re serious about wanting their pool,” he said.

Mr Faull said the bumper stickers and flyers were important, because some people in the community were still unaware that the pool had been closed, or had stopped talking about it.

“We wanted people to know that the pool is in trouble,” he said.

“It’s sad to think that the public are becoming a bit lethargic about it.”

He said that he hoped the stickers and flyers would help to motivate people to get involved and to have their say on the future of the pool, as the council meets with the community to discuss options.

group met with council representatives last week as part of the consultation, and Mr Faull said the group’s position was that they wanted the pool re-opened by summer.

As for amenities, which an engineer’s structural report listed as needing upgrading, Mr Faull said he believed they should be upgraded once the pool’s shell was repaired and the facility was re-opened.

Councillor Jason Callanan said the discussions with the group were very positive, and that the council was looking forward to meeting with Olinda Community House representatives this week for more consultation on the pool.

The council will be meeting with stakeholders in the community in July and August, before opening a broader consultation via its website in August and September.

Couple’s colonial adventures

By REBECCA BILLS MOUNT Dandenong and District U3A’s annual general meeting will have a special guest presenting a talk on the lives of Lord and Lady Northcote.

Kalorama resident and writer Doctor Elizabeth Taylor recently completed her PhD and wrote a book on her research about the lives of Lord and Lady Northcote with her talk based around the colonial heritage of the couple.

“I came to Australia in 2001 so it was around 2003 that I started my doctorate,” she said.

“My studies started in the history of the Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne as it was made a world heritage building because of its cultural significance rather than its specific appearance.

“I started looking at the Royal Exhibition Building and found in 1907 there was an exhibition on women’s work which was a big, big thing and the sponsor of the event was Lady Northcote.”

Dr Taylor said as it was a women’s exhibition “on women, for women” she was especially in-

terested but as she started searching the archives she found almost nothing on Lady Northcote.

“Even her husband, who was the third Governor General of the newly established Federation of Australia, there wasn’t much written on.

“So that’s when I became really fascinated by her.”

Dr Taylor then moved her work into a biographical study on Lady Northcote but because there wasn’t enough information to base a doctorate on she also included a biographical study on Lord Northcote.

“I had a particular focus on how important aristocratic women were in colonial rule,” she said.

“I look forward to discussing all I have found for those that attend the AGM later in July.”

SHE’S the smiling face that greets parents and students as they cross the road on their way to school each morning.

And earlier this month she celebrated 25 years as the crossing supervisor at Ferny Creek Primary School.

Diane Garsend made the move to Ferny Creek from a city lifestyle in Balwyn 25 years ago.

“I started on 1 July 1980, I had just made the move and was looking for a part-time job,” she said.

“A neighbour in the area who had done the job before me asked me if I would give it a go - so I did.

“It was the middle of winter and I thought I’d give it a go for one term and it really was a terrible time to start but I just loved all the staff and the kids so I kept going.”

The 60-year-old said she felt welcomed into the school community as soon as she started working at the crossing.

“I’m treated with such respect by all and everybody is just so friendly,” she said.

“I feel like I’m doing something worthwhile and giving the kids not only road safety but lessons in honesty and manners.”

When asked how she deals with the bitterly cold Ferny Creek weather she said: “I don’t know.”

“You just become a part of it, you have to live with nature - I’m a firm believer in that,” she said.

“When I’m on the crossing I get to observe nature in such a beautiful part of the world, I’m really lucky.”

Ms Garsend said she is now helping former students’ children to cross the road.

Opinion Motorbike beauty I REFER to the article Fire Lit Under Bike Deaths, Mail, 15 July.

I’m 77 years old and have been riding motorcycles since I was 17 without incident.

I do a lot of touring in Victoria and interstate and often lead rides with the community group I belong to. I get great enjoyment from riding.

I ride with two grandsons and with a lot of experienced riders. It is interesting that the people I have ridden with over the years do not fit the statistics or hoon type behaviour that Mr Nieman quotes.

I accept the fact that motorcycle travel is 33.3 times riskier than driving a car Also, from 2003 to 2012, almost half (45 per cent) of the fatal or serious injury motorcycle crashes occurred in 50 kilometre per hour and 60 kilometre per hour zones.

Also, a total of 36 pedestrians were killed on Victorian roads in 2013, which represents 15 per cent of all fatalities - the same as for motorcycle fatalities.

So, Mr Nieman wants to ban motorcycles.

Does he suggest that we also ban cars so as to reduce pedestrian fatalities?

“It’s an honour, I love seeing second generations come over the crossing,” she said.

“I never had any children of my own so I see each student as my family.”

Principal Matthew Coyle said his 10 years at the school has taught him what a great asset Ms Garsend is.

“We all call her the legendary Diane,” he said.

“She makes it her mission every year to know every child and parent by name and even when their birthdays are.

“She is very generous with her time at the school and is always out there at the crossing with a smile - rain, hail or shine.”

Earlier this month each student wrote a message for a special assembly to celebrate Ms Garsend’s 25 years at the crossing.

Hub hold-up RE: COP Shop Hub (Mail, 15 July) really?

I have been looking through old newspapers.

In May 2011 the council purchased the Bailey Road milk bar in Cockatoo.

It was to be a flexible area for community gatherings and meetings as well as providing a local space to deliver training.

It was also going to destroy the kindergarten.

It was rumoured at that time the council had paid $450,000, but I stand to be corrected.

Fast forward to 2014 and what do we have? The good citizens of Cockatoo fought and saved the kinder.

The Bailey Road milk bar is in disrepair and, yea, no hub.

I would like to think that the good folk in Emerald would get their hub, but I would be very surprised if it happens.

Speaking out DID the Yarra Ranges Council think deeply enough about the current controversy over proposed reforms to the Racial Discrimination Act before passing its motion on 27 May to lobby the government for no change?

It seems not, for no reference appears to have been made on that occasion to the principle of free speech, which is what defenders of the proposed changes are fighting for.

It is good that the council wants to minimise racial vilification but perhaps there are wiser ways of doing this than supporting ambiguouslyphrased laws which unfairly inhibit dissident commentators from expressing ‘politically incorrect’ views on public issues involving ethnicity.

Cull concern THERE is a need to clarify statements made by Mr Bray of Parks Victoria (Deer Cull Slammed, Mail, 8 July).

Firstly the licence issued by the police for all shooters states that no firearm should be discharged when it is likely to endanger anyone’s life this is so ambiguous that it is almost meaningless.

Shooters should not be discharging center-fire rifles within 50 kilometers of Melbourne CBD and, secondly, definitely not within 500 meters of a private residence.

I wrote an open letter to Yarra Ranges Council suggesting that they should prepare a local by-law to gauge people’s reaction to a local law that restricted the use of center-fire rifles to be not closer than 500 meters from a residential dwelling.

Of course there would need to be exception for land owners to put down livestock etc.

Council did not have what it takes to test this proposal and protect their residents.

They used the weak excuse that a law already exists, which is rubbish.

Getting back to Mr Bray - if deer shooters other than Australian Deer Association members hear center-fire rifles being discharged, they know

that there are deer in the area and make their own decision to shoot deer on private property or along creek reserves.

He might as well send up a flare.

This has occurred at Yellingbo along the Woori Yallock Creek in the last few weeks with spot lighters and, yes, they would have a deer shooter’s licence.

Zero sum game RE: Mr Nieman’s letter (Fire Lit Under Bike Deaths, Mail, 15 July), I’d like to make an observation.

Although he does have some valid points, if you take his argument to its natural conclusion you would ban all vehicles from the road regardless of the number of wheels they have, as that would bring the road toll down to zero in perpetuity (unless cyclists or hooning horse riders got into trouble on those terrible mountain bends).

Life is not and should not be controlled to the extent some people desire.

The last sentence of his letter really tells more about him than the numerous preceding paragraphs.

Town’s history comes alive

By REBECCA BILLS ALL things history will be discussed at the upcoming Ferntree Gully ‘then and now’ talk later this month.

The Ferntree Gully Library is opening its doors with the Knox Historic Society to present an afternoon panel focusing on the history of the town.

The panel will draw on years of research about the area and illustrate with large photographs, historic items of houseware and farming.

Sue Alderson from the Knox Historical Society said the group was formed in the 60s and has been collecting information about Ferntree Gully since then.

“We have found an incred-

ible amount of information on the pioneers in the area,” she said.

“In this talk, we will include photos from schools in the area and how they have changed over the years through a collection of photos that show the fashion and how class sizes have changed.

“We also have a lot of photos of Boronia and Ferntree Gully as they have evolved over the years.”

Ms Alderson said they would discuss The Middle Hotel’s former life as the coroner’s court and conduct cemetery tours in Ferntree Gully as most of the pioneers are buried there.

She said there was a display at the Ferntree Gully Library that was on display in the

lead-up to the talk with historic items and photos for the public to view.

Library manager Denise Hibbs said it was great that the Knox Historical Society and the library could work together to present something like this to the community.

“I can say for sure what will be discussed will be extremely interesting - especially for those tracing their ancestry in the area,” she said.

The Ferntree Gully then and now free talk is on Thursday 31 July at 2.30pm at Ferntree Gully Library located at 1010 Burwood Highway, Ferntree Gully.

By REBECCA BILLS A TOTAL of $4000 will be off to the Cancer Council after Annemarie Manders and Lorraine Dunbar’s successful Tea Cosy Competition and Fund-raiser.

Ms Manders from Warrantina Lavender Farm opened up her tea rooms for Ms Dunbar’s Craft for Cure Tea Cosy Competition that was held from 5 to 13 July.

Ms Dunbar knows first-hand the heartbreak and pain cancer can cause after losing her husband and daughter as well as other family members to the unrelenting disease.

“Fourteen years ago I lost my husband to pancreatic cancer and five years ago I lost my daughter to breast cancer,” she said.

“It really just whacks you over the head; there are lots of worthy causes out there but you have to pick the one that touches you the most and for me that is the Cancer Council.”

Launching the Tea Cosy Competition in March this year, Ms Dunbar has worked tirelessly creating free patterns that she has uploaded to her blog teacosycompetition.blogspot.com.au.

“People from around the world have gotten involved and hearing each person’s individual stories has been wonderful,” she said.

“We had entries from as far away as England, in total we had 260 sent in and only 120 left over which will continue to be for sale, with all profits going to the cause,” she said.

Ms Manders said the two had decided that the Tea Cost Competition and Fund-raiser would be held again next year, but hoped to have it running over a longer period that included the school holidays.

Heaven cent A STRONG commitment to community involvement and the value of giving were evident at the Mountain District Christian School in Monbulk when the students made a special coin trail earlier in the year.

Students from the school were set on a mission to help support the Book of Proverbs Organisation (PVBS) in raising funds for developing countries.

The school called on the students from primary and secondary classes to search for as many five cent pieces as possible and to eventually lay them in a trail on the basketball court.

Class 1/2H was the clear winners in the coin trail event, which finished in March, raising $111.45 in five cent pieces - a whopping 2229 coins.

The year seven class gathered the most out of the secondary school, with $58.85 collected - 1177 coins.

All up, the coin trail wound its way around a 93 metre track with more than $460 raised for the organisation.

A spokesperson for the school said the giving nature of the students was evident in their participation in the event, and that the school community worked together on the project.

“It was also great to see the older students working with the younger students in harmony for this wonderful cause,” they said.

Flavour of Bollywood

By JESSE GRAHAM FAMILIES and friends are being urged to make their way down to Monbulk’s Living and Learning Centre for a special Bollywood-themed evening.

The Bollywood in Monbulk evening will run from 7.3010.30pm on Saturday 9 August at the Living and Learning Centre, as a fund-raiser for the Monbulk Christian Fellowship.

Church administrator, Karen Jaspers, said the money raised from the evening would go towards the Abhishiktha orphanage and widows’ home in India, where the fellowship had run a mission.

She said the mission had run at the orphanage for over the last 10 years, and the church had previously had success in purchasing a car and supplies for the organisation.

Ms Jaspers said the evening could be a learning experience for those unfamiliar with Bollywood-style dancing, with an expert dancer attending to teach the audience a range of dances.

The event was run last year, and had a strong attendance, according to Ms Jaspers.

“By the end of the night, we had two or three dances we could all do together.”

Ms Jaspers said the event, which was organised by her colleague, June Leonard, had no specific fund-raising goal, but that any money raised would help with the orphanage’s ongoing costs.

She said it was a great occasion to get the family together for a fun night out, and meet other people from the community.

“Really, for us, it’s a great

thing because it’s a really good social night - we always have a good time and raise a little bit of money for India and our Missions Department.”

Prizes will be given out on the evening for best adult costume, along with best boy and girl.

Entry to the Bollywood in Monbulk evening is $15 and children under 12 accompanied by parents can receive halfprice entry.

Alcohol is not permitted at the event.

The intelligent, compelling plot features themes of diplomacy and prejudice, as Caesar and the human “ambassador” Malcolm (Jason Clarke) struggle to trust each other and maintain the peace against

intense fear and distrust from both sides. The complex villains - man and ape - are ruthless but motivated by a need to survive, and so make a grim level of sense.

The action is also amazing.

It’s wild but very cleanly-shot and easy to follow, and explosively showcases the strength and ferocity that apes possess.

One stand-out sequence has chimps wielding machineguns on horseback. Enough said.

Believe the hype about this being one of the best sequels ever : Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes is outstanding.

BARASSI The Stage Show is coming to Burrinja next month.

Written by Sherbrooke local Tee O’Neill, she said the play was based on the iconic Australian footballer, coach, motivator and father of modern football Ron Barassi.

Best described as a story of passion and courage, of success and failure, Ms O’Neill said the story started in World War II when Barassi’s champion footballer father was tragically killed in Libya.

“You really feel the ghost of his father throughout the performance,” she said.

“It follows the development of young Ron under the care and mentorship of legendary coach Norm Smith, and as he develops into ‘the father of modern football’.”

Ever driven to challenge himself and to live up to the impossible memory of his father, Barassi makes the transition from champion player to the game’s most ferocious, unstoppable super coach, achieving the status of legend along the way.

Ms O’Neill said she remembered being at a match where Barassi was coaching and was

game for a while but it was during that same time that Barassi was coming into his own and so many of father’s friends and my father remember how unstoppable he was.

“And while his football success knew no bounds, his marriage, business and old Melbourne club were crumbling.”

Presented by Jager Productions, Barassi has watched and approved the authenticity of the play.

It’s a special karaoke night for those with a disability - an opportunity to build confidence and activate parts of the brain that only music can do.

Local resident Julie Cuffe started the group four years ago after her daughter Cherie acquired a brain injury after a car accident.

“I found that not only in the

Yarra Valley but everywhere there isn’t much in terms of recreational activities for those with disabilities - especially those around the 18-year-old age bracket,” she said.

“We have anywhere between 10 to 20 people that attend with their carers for two hours to really just have a lot of fun.

“Music is processed by a different part of the brain and that’s why people learn from music and we have seen such an improvement in so many that attend.”

Ms Cuffe said the difference

between ‘normal’ karaoke and her karaoke nights was that hers were tailored for those with special needs.

“This is a time that really helps them all gain confidence and social skills,” she said.

“It’s amazing to watch each person grow from the time they started and the difference the music and singing has in their development.

“It’s really good learning for them and I don’t think there are many people who don’t like singing or dancing - it’s great.”

THE Monbulk Pumas decided to hang up the studded boots and give indoor soccer a go earlier this month in the Futsal Oz Tournament.

With the new Futsal Oz Centre in Mount Evelyn newly opened, coach Martin VandenBerg said it was a great way for a local team to get involved at the centre that predominantly has players from the inner-Melbourne suburbs.

“It’s something new for the team to play futsal as we are normally an outdoor team,” he said.

“They have performed well up against the competition

but unfortunately not won any games.”

Futsal Oz owner Peter Parthimos said it was a massive step for Futsal Oz to expand to Mount Evelyn as they will now be able to offer what they do in the inner city of Melbourne in the eastern suburbs.

He said the facility would now enable the organisation to hold national and international events all under the one roof with the plan to upgrade the multi-use facility into the biggest purpose-built Futsal complex in Australasia.

“With five courts including a couple of international size ones, this complex will put the

far eastern suburbs on the map for Futsal Australia,” Mr Parthimos said.

“I am delighted to announce that Futsal Oz has the opportunity to directly invest in the future of Australian Futsal.”

Futsal Oz Brunswick manager Sofiane Soufi said it was wonderful to see the Monbulk Pumas enjoying the day and hope that this will be the start of a great relationship with all soccer players in the area.

The new complex is located at 19-23 Hereford Road, Mount Evelyn and offers five brand new futsal courts, a metro cafe area and soon a fully furnished new gymnasium.

Clare’s a cut above

WANDIN’S best basketballer received a louder cheer than usual on Saturday night as Dandenong Rangers guard Clare Papavs celebrated her 250th SEABL match.

Papavs, a 10-year veteran of the Dandenong SEABL women’s team, was the main attraction on Saturday night at Dandenong Basketball Stadium as she moved into the top 10 most capped SEABL women of all-time.

There was no lap-of-honour for her 250th though. Papavs continued to grind out the game in her usual physical manner without much fanfare - taking charges, making huge rebounds and snaring her usual assortment of longrange points as Dandenong won 84-48 over Launceston.

Her match ended in fitting Papavs’ style as she took a charge and received another huge cheer going to the bench with nine points and five rebounds to her name.

She was thrilled to play out the milestone match with a fantastic group of Rangers women, who she considers more than just team mates.

“It was awesome,” Papavs said.

“My team mates, I could not have honestly played with a better bunch of girls on my 250th game.

“I’m pretty proud and just defensively we stepped it up in that second half, so it was a really good way to finish it off.”

“These girls aren’t just my team mates, but they’re my best mates, so honestly I’ve had the best career with those girls and hopefully there’s another 100 games in me.”

Dandenong coach Larissa Anderson said Papavs’ work rate is unmatched and it has showed across a stellar career including three SEABL championships and a best on court MVP medal.

“That girl works harder than anybody,” Anderson said.

“She gives the team and the club everything she’s got and couldn’t speak more highly of her or be prouder of her achievements.”

Family ties on track

By JAMIE STRUDLEY THE Yarra Ranges Athletics Club showed off its true family values on the weekend, in the process regaining the Knox Open Day Club Champion trophy.

Sixty-three club athletes of all ages cheered, supported and cared for each other and competed with the goal of team success at the Knox Open Day, held on a damp Norton Park cross country circuit.

Knox Open Day is one of only two events on the cross country calendar where we get to compete as a club at an external event, the other being the upcoming Cockatoo Hills Challenge on 9 August. The ability to compete alongside mum and dad or son and daughter is an element of athletics often forgotten. The athletes certainly enjoyed the opportunity this weekend.

The club is exceptionally fortunate to have such a strong family culture throughout the club, making it such an enjoyable experience every time the club gets together.

That strong sense of family, much admired by rival clubs, was no more evident than the support given to every competitor regardless of their finishing position.

Team results from the day were: Under 9 Girls 2nd, Under 10 Girls 1st, Under 11 Girls 3rd, Under 12 Girls 2nd, Under 13 Girls 1st, Under 15 Girls 1st, Open Women 1st, Under 12 Boys 1st, Open Men 2nd and 3rd, Club Overall Yarra Ranges Athletics 1st.

The first half was a tight tussle with Belgrave holding an 8 point advantage at the main break.

In the third Healesville didn’t capitalise on their chances booting 2.6 for the term while holding Belgrave to just 1 behind. Healesville’s lead at three-quarter time was 9 points.

The last quarter was where Belgrave turned it on. It played direct attacking football and got its reward on the scoreboard booting 6.1 to 1.3 to finish in great style and record a very good win.

Mount Evelyn 19.10 (124) d Upwey Tecoma 10.9 (69) IT was Mount Evelyn with a commanding 37 point advantage at the long break.

Upwey got a bit more run going in the third and booted 6 goals to 3 for the quarter to reduce the margin to 23 points to stay in the game.

Mount Evelyn produced a great last quarter. It held Upwey to just 1 behind while it booted 6 majors to record a fantastic win.

Olinda Ferny Creek 13.11 (89) d Warburton Millgrove 9.15 (69) THIS game was a good battle but it was Olinda that had the slight edge all day, their lead was just 4 points at the first break which they extended to 25 by half time on the back of a 5 goal to 1 second.

Warby battled hard in the third to give it a sneaky chance.

The last quarter was an arm wrestle, both sides scoring 2 goals which saw Olinda record not a pretty win but a win nonetheless.

Wandin 20.9 (129) d Emerald 9.13 (67) WANDIN is in a rich vein of form as it now sits third, Emerald defeating them by 62 points. Wandin never had 1 outstanding quarter where they blew this game away but they played a great consistent brand where they outscored the opposition every term by 3 to 4 goals which produced a hefty margin come final siren. Wandin are really starting to hit their peak and are going to be a formidable force come finals if they maintain their current form.

Monbulk 5.9 (39) d Woori Yallock 3.8 (26) MONBULK is now league leaders as it sits one game clear at the top of the ladder after its 13-point triumph over Woori

Yallock. This game wasn’t a pretty affair with goals extremely hard to come by but it was Monbulk’s forward line functioning better in the first half that made the difference.

It may have only booted 4 goals but it held Woori to just 5 behinds to give them a 23 point lead at the half. Woori did hit the scoreboard in the third scoring 2 goals while Monbulk was held goalless and the margin was reduced to 15 points.

The last quarter was just a slog and the 15 point margin was always going to be a tough one to pull in for Woori and that it proved to be, both sides scored just 1 goal to see Monbulk record victory and move to the top of the table.
