■ Africa-bound across the ocean...
Tim’s rough row IF ROWING from Australia to Africa seems like a strange endeavour, that’s because no person has ever successfully completed the task. That thought has not deterred former Belgrave man Tim Spiteri, who has been taking on the challenge with six others to raise thousands of dollars to combat a condition close to home. Tim, who grew up in Belgrave, is currently around 3000 kilometres out to sea on a 45-foot rowboat, after departing from Western Australia on 11 June. The trip to Africa is around 8500 kilometres in total, and Tim and his teammates are on a constant two hours on, two hours off rowing schedule across the ocean. An avid rower and Leading Senior Constable with Northcote police, Tim decided to raise money for MS Australia because his mother, Rhonda Spiteri, has been living with the disease since she was in her twenties. Through the journey, Tim is hoping to raise $250,000 for MS Australia to research potential cures to the disease, which currently affects 21,000 Australians. One of his teammates, Melbourne’s Shane Usher, is also raising money for MS Australia. Rhonda said that it had been Tim’s dream to row across the Indian Ocean, and that she was proud of her son for embarking on the trip. “It’s very nerve-racking – I’m incredibly proud, but it’s nerve-racking,” she said. “He’s passionate about ocean rowing, and passionate about raising money and awareness for MS Australia.” She said that she kept track of Tim’s voyage through blogs posted online almost daily, and noted that they’ve had “horrendous” weather hampering their progress.
Rhonda said the journey was already taking its toll on Tim and the other rowers, with the rigorous schedule resulting in sleep deprivation and hallucinations. “The row doesn’t stop – they never stop, and their bodies break down completely,” she said. However, Tim is no stranger to ocean rowing, after taking on a 30day row across the Atlantic Ocean from the Canary Islands to Barbados in January 2013. The team is hoping to complete the row in around 60 days, though their travel is dependent on weather and rapidly-changing ocean conditions. Despite not having support on the row from the mainland, Rhonda said the specially-made boat was self-righting, in case waves capsize the vessel. A number of challenges remain throughout the trip for Tim and the crew, including the enormous amount of calories burned during the row, dangerous weather threatening the boat, sickness, injury or even pirate attack. Spirits seem to be remaining high on the boat, however, with Tim posting on 8 July that, despite being constantly wet and enduring the odd flying-fish, he was “loving life out of the sea”. “Life aboard an ocean rowing boat is not without its laughs,” he wrote. “During the shenanigans with the helm of course we end up with more water in our cabin. Looks like we’re destined to be wet the whole row, and wow, has it been pouring.” To keep track of the Tim Spiteri’s journey to Africa, learn more about Tim, Shane or the boat, or to donate to MS Australia visit www.timsvoyage.com.
