Drawn to Indigenous history A THOUGHT-provoking exhibition which timelines the controversial issues that mark the history of Indigenous Australia has come to the Burrinja Cultural Centre. She’ll Be Right, Mate? runs until 31 August and exhibits more than 70 cartoons providing a powerful narrative about the story of Australia’s first peoples and the First Fleet, land rights, the Stolen Generations and Kevin Rudd’s 2008 apology. President of the Australian Cartoon Museum Jim Bridges, right, who has partnered with the centre to bring these issues to light, said the exhibition forces people to reflect and ask questions about the country’s history. “We live in a country with a short history yet it’s on top of a much longer existing history that some aren’t aware of. We hope the exhibit might be able to use cartoons to teach history and force us to think,” he said. Visit Burrinja Cultural Centre’s website for more information. - ANEEKA SIMONIS
Destination Tecoma “We are making Tecoma a destination, where people will no longer drive through our town on their way to Belgrave or Upwey,” Ms Rook said. “The empty shops have filled up, and now people have a reason to stop here,” she said. Tecoma could now be called the heart of the Dandenongs for op shops and preloved stores. “You can count them on more than

“Everyone in town was able to come together and talk about what we wanted in the town,” she said. “From that, we split up into a number of working groups, and there are so many exciting things happening. “We really want to bring tourists here as part of their visit to the Dandenongs and I think we are working towards that.”

weren’t the only reason to make Tecoma a destination, it was yet another positive step for the town. “People used to drive past and think that there wasn’t much here,” she said. “But the shops are filled, and we will do our best to promote the area.” She said the idea of ‘Destination: Tecoma’ came from a number of meetings held in consultation with the Yarra Ranges Council.

TIRED of being the middle man between Belgrave and Upwey, Tecoma shopkeepers hope to make their town a destination. Moving forward from the burger fight their town is so well known for, Tecoma Traders Association president Karen Rook said there were many reasons to stop, shop and stay in Tecoma.
