By NOEL MURPHY GEELONG Mayor Darryn Lyons says he is a victim of the United Kingdom’s phone-hacking scandal.

Cr Lyons told the Independent he was unable to talk because of police investigations and legal action in London but could confirm he was an alleged victim of News Corp hacking. “I’m a victim of multiple counts of phone hacking and I’m aware of investigations,� Cr Lyons told the Independent when asked about recent News of the World hacking trial findings. “I’d love to comment but I’ve been advised by my lawyers, because of legal action, not to.�

Cr Lyons was one of the biggest players in British media for two decades when he headed the former Big Pictures celebrity photo agency.

He refused to be drawn on several of the Independent’s questions about the hacking scandal.

Asked whether phone hacking contributed to Big Pictures’ problems before he wound up the company, Cr Lyons replied: “No comment�. Asked whether newspapers other than News of the World had allegedly hacked his phones, he replied: “No comment�.

Asked whether he would seek compensation for any hacking, he replied: “That’s in the hands of my lawyers�.

Mr Murdoch’s media holdings in Australia include the Geelong Advertiser and the Herald Sun, which published apologies to Cr Lyons early this year over inaccurate reports regarding his financial circumstances. Fairfax Media publications also apologised for similar reports.

The Independent understands that Cr Lyons was also paid six-figure sums of money as part of the settlement.

At the height of his paparazzi operations Cr Lyons was negotiating photo sales worth hundreds of thousands of dollars each with some of the world’s biggest mastheads.

AUSTRALIA’S troubled National Broadband Network has stuffed up again in Geelong.

Geelong customers of Australia’s second largest internet provider were told to get ready for the NBN – but it was a mistake.

ISP iiNet emailed Geelong customers to prepare them to receive NBN equipment inside and outside their homes.

The email said Geelong customers would receive a wireless connection requiring an antenna mounted either under eaves or on the roof.

However, a scan of the NBN

rollout plan showed no construction under way locally.

Geelong was on the cusp of an NBN rollout when a change of federal government put it on hold.

An iiNet spokesperson confirmed the information was incorrect.

“I can confirm that NBN Co has provided incorrect data to their retail service providers and they have apologised to us directly for the error. “iiNet will be writing to every customer to receive this incorrect information to apologise on behalf of NBN Co. “Geelong has not been target-

ed for an early roll-out of NBN fibre.”

The company subsequently emailed Geelong customers, saying: “Whoops ... We got a little carried away.

“Yesterday we let you know that construction of NBN Fixed Wireless services had begun in your local area.

“NBNCo have since advised that the information they provided to us, and other retail service providers, was incorrect.

“On behalf of iiNet, I sincerely apologise for the inconvenience we may have caused. When the NBN does roll into your area, we’ll be in touch once again with the good news.”

Prison for city jobless

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN RETRENCHED Ford and Alcoa workers are targeted for prison jobs as part of a wider recruitment campaign launched this week.

Barwon Prison general manager Jonathan Howe said expansion of Geelong’s two prisons near Lara required about 180 extra staff.

Corrections Department recruiting staff attended two “jobs fairs” at Ford and planned others at Alcoa as it wound down its Point Henry operations, he said.

“The local community is going through a tough time with Alcoa and Ford closing but we realised there was

Alcoa, Ford staff targets a whole load of people with skills that would appear to be transferrable,” Mr Howe said.

“It made a lot of sense and meant we might be able to help our local community.”

Corrections Victoria launched an advertising campaign aimed at recruiting 750 new prison and community corrections officers over the next 12 months.

Mr Howe said Ford and Alcoa workers would be directly targeted with the assistance of job-support agencies.

“This is a workforce with proven skills. Workers might just think they make cars or smelt aluminium but actually they have skills that make a lot of sense in the corrections environment.

“They’re part of a team, are safety conscious, a disciplined workforce, with life experience and are reasonably physically fit.

“They also have a capacity to learn because they work in evolving environments with new technology as part of large workforces used to dealing with lots of people.

“We can train people and provide those skills but if staff have preset skills in those areas it’s a big advantage.

“Out of this dire story there might be a silver lining for many for a second career they never imagined they’d ever have.”

Mr Howe said Barwon Prison already employed ex-Alcoa workers who had encouraged former colleagues to consider corrections positions.

“They’ve been fantastic. We have a former Alcoa fitter who’s been here for seven years and is now an acting senior prison officer.”

National award recognises quality of GC magazine A NATIONAL award has celebrated the quality of Geelong Coast magazine (GC).

The glossy quarterly won Best Special Publication at a Community Newspapers of Australia (CNA) annual awards night in Melbourne last Friday.

GC was the category’s only finalist from the Geelong region, beating competition from around Australia to win the coveted title.

Big stake in Ponds

The group last week spent $63 million on a 50 per cent stake in the older section of the recently expanded shopping centre from Australia Unity. IPST has also struck a deal to buy the Coles-owned half of a new $65 million extension part-opened late May. â&#x20AC;&#x153;From our point of view, greater Geelong is a good investment,â&#x20AC;? IPST retail services general manager Sam Curry said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re reasonably confident how Geelong through the Surf Coast will trade. Coles and Kmart spearhead the shopping centre expansion with 38 specialty stores including Reject Shop, Priceline and a new food court. The final precinct will include a specialty store mall, more fashion stores and 1930 car parks.

Coles has also shown confidence in Geelong, with its Waurn Ponds super store the first of four set to open in the Geelong region over the next two years as part of a $130 million local investment.

A NEW entrepreneurial investment program aiming to give sports technology businesses a head start hopes to generate 75 new jobs in Geelong.

Australian Sports Technology Networkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s HeadStart program hopes to attract fledgling sports technology businesses to establish locally.

It is the first accelerator program in Australia focused on the development, growth and investment in sports technology start-ups.

James Demetriou, the chair of the Geelong-based network, said the city was in an ideal position to attract startups because of its skill base and advanced-manufacturing capability. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have a can-do culture, we have good infrastructure and thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s already a big capacity in sport locally,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As an example, we have more than 200 companies in the surf industry supply chain in this region alone. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the kind of expansion we can encourage because sports technology globally is a $300 billion business.â&#x20AC;?

HeadStart has already identified seven fledgling sports technology businesses and plans to incubate and invest in up to 40 more over the next four years.

Mr Demetriou said the program gave start-ups unique access to the sports industry as well as connections to a local, national and international network of investors, mentors and advisors.

Value of rescue funds in doubt

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN GEELONG is part of the third-most “economically vulnerable” region in the country, according to a new report.

And job-assistance and rescue packages might not have a significant impact on the problem, the report warned.

The situation was likely to “significantly” worsen following further job losses at Alcoa and Ford.

Geelong has access to a range of job assistance packages worth multi-millions

of dollars, including a $30 million Geelong Region Investment and Innovation Fund and a Federal Government $155 million Growth Fund.

Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson this week announced an extra $500,000 Geelong job-seeker initiative.

National Centre for Vocational Education Research managing director Rod Camm said the report uncovered a “dearth of robust information” on the impact of job-assistance packages.

“The various assistance packages

available in many of the more vulnerable regions were focused on improving employment in the region.

“However, there’s very little evaluative data available on these packages by which to assess their success or otherwise, so their impact is not clear.”

The report calculated the region suffered a plunge in average working hours of more than seven per cent between 2002 and 2012.

The Barwon-Western District region was behind only Gosford-Wyong and

Central Western Sydney on the economic vulnerability scale.

The main reason for the drop was the reduction in average work hours in the region’s dominant industries of manufacturing, health care and retail trade, the report said.

Surprisingly, the biggest falls were in health care and retail, with only a “minimal” drop in manufacturing hours.

“With the closure of the Ford car manufacturing plant in Geelong by October 2016, resulting in the loss of around

500 jobs, this is likely to significantly impact upon the manufacturing sector in this region,” the report said.

“The loss of 260 jobs at the Geelong head office of a major national retailer (Target) in June 2013 further compounds the employment declines experienced in the retail sector.”

Alcoa’s aluminium smelter is set to close in a month and its rolling mill, employing 400, will close by the end of the year following wide-scale job cuts at Boral and Qantas at Avalon Airport.

Mr Andrews told federal parliament the Abbott Government would learn from the results of the first two quarters.

Geelong’s trial site had its first anniversary this week, following complaints in the Independent last month about the scheme removing support services from clients with disabilities.

“We do not underestimate the difficulties involved in the rollout of this scheme. That is why the trial sites are so important to provide the learnings for us over the next few years as to how this can best work,” Mr Andrews told parliament.

“Already there are some results in from the first couple of quarters from various trial sites around the country. Some of those results have been mixed.

“What we have to learn from that is whether or not the results which are not as good as we might have thought are simply a product of the start-up of a new system.”

Mr Andrews said some of the issues could be “ironed out over time” or they could be “longer-term issues that need to be addressed in how the system is put into operation.

“We are in the throes of the implementation of it.

It is going to take a number of years.”

Mr Andrews said the government remained committed to the NDIS.

MOVE over Stone Cold Steve Austin – Geelong’s Stone Cold Steve Moxon is ready to take on all comers.

Sporting a moniker bestowed on him when he was 18 at the beginning of his kickboxing career, Moxon aims to leave opponents stone cold on the boxing ring floor.

He is one of many who have tried to cross over into boxing but among the few to have succeeded.

Moxon meets undefeated Denis Hogan for the WBA Oceania lightweight title at Altona on Sunday.

A win will give him a top-15 professional world ranking.

Moxon is undefeated, although he has only five boxing bouts to his credit compared to Hogan’s 19.

But the difference in experience doesn’t faze him.

“I think he’s totally beatable,” Moxon declared.

“I wanted the challenge, now I have to prove it.”

Moxon said his 46 international kickboxing bouts would

stand him in good stead, as well as the higher calibre of opponents.

The Ballarat product moved to Geelong this year to further his career and upgrade his coaching, hooking up with Chris Bradford at his TopTier Muay Thai gym in South Geelong.

Moxon has already fought across four different weight divisions, often giving away a significant weight advantage but fuelling his self-belief.

“I want to take on the best, I want to test my skill and ability.

“I’m taking my opportunities.

If one comes up then I’ll do it.

“I’m the second shortest guy in ring at the moment, so opponents sometimes can underestimate me. They think I’m just a kickboxer and end up getting upset.”

Even though Hogan is Brisbane-based, Moxon thought he would be fighting the crowd as well.

“He’s a very popular boxer, so most of the crowd will be following him but I’ll be fighting for my one-year-old daughter, Jayda, and fiance”, Kelly, and that’s enough for me.”

By NOEL MURPHY GEELONG businessmen Nigel Austin and Frank Costa have featured in an annual list of Australia’s 200 wealthiest people.

Mr Austin, head of Cotton On retail group, and fresh produce king Mr Costa were both estimated to be worth $295 million in the BRW list.

Cotton On has grown to be a billion-dollar-plus operation with more than 1300 stores internationally and plans to open another 250 this year.

In October the retailer acquired Australian young-fashion retailer Supre and its 157 stores.

On in 1991. He is the son of the late Grant Austin, co-founder of former Geelong-based clothing wholesaler Austin Group.

Nigel Austin’s wealth jumped from $250 million last year to $295 million, ranking him 173 in the top 200.

Mr Costa’s billion-dollar Costa Group, the biggest freshfood supplier to Woolworths and Coles, is likely to go on the market in the next few years.

US firm Paine and Partners bought a 50 per cent stake in the company under a five-year plan struck in 2012. The remaining 50 per cent is split between Mr Costa, who chairs the company, and brothers Robert and Anthony.

Mr Costa and late brother Adrian founded The Costa Group in 1961 when they bought their father’s greengrocery, Covent Garden. By the mid-1960s they were supplying Coles and Woolies in Geelong and eyeing pastures further afield.

As the supermarkets steadily expanded through the 1970s so did the Costa fortunes. The group is now Australia’s largest private produce grower, marketer and exporter.

The Costa Group employs 7000 people and exports 20 per cent of its produce.

Mr Costa’s fortune rose $5 million in the past year, ranking him 175.

ANTI-ALCOA activists are under attack for allegedly misrepresenting supporters of Anglesea’s power station again.

The station’s union representative, Ben Davis, hit back at Surf Coast Air Action (SCAA) for claiming on its Facebook page that he had acknowledged “widespread concern about Alcoa’s toxic emissions” in a recent media report.

Mr Davis, Australian Workers Union’s Victorian branch secretary, told the Independent he was unaware of any toxic emissions from the plant or staff suffering ill-effects.

SCAA has been campaigning for the plant to be closed.

“I’m amazed a group (SCAA) could be so adamant about throwing 80 people and their families on the jobless scrapheap. They’re not concerned about jobs and they should be,” Mr Davis said.

Surf Coast Air Action’s Dr Jacinta Morahan said Mr Davis was “no doubt aware of SCAA’s website, Facebook page, Twitter account and press releases, all of which focus upon Alcoa’s toxic emissions”.

“In this context it beggars belief that Mr Davis was not talking about Alcoa’s toxic emissions when he said that he appreciated SCAA’s concerns.

“This is reinforced by (his)

reference to helping the company and potential buyers investigate ways to improve the plant. This again is clearly a reference to toxic emissions and the availability of pollution reduction technology.

“The concerns regarding the toxic emissions from Alcoa’s Anglesea coal mine and power station are well-known and widespread (and were) supported by Environment Minister Greg Hunt specifically mentioning Anglesea in a recent speech where he said, ‘Particulate pollution is a killer’.”

SCAA was criticised earlier this month for misleading comments about AGL Energy’s stance on the power plant. The group released a media statement headlined ‘AGL rules out buying Anglesea power station’ and claiming the company blamed “negative effects” on residents’ health and wellbeing for its lack of interest in buying the facility.

AGL Energy and Alcoa labelled the release “misleading” and “wrong”.

Trickey was also sentenced on a count of criminal damage to seven days’ jail to be served concurrently, effectively giving him four months behind bars.

The 41-year-old self-styled social media guru and IT consultant criticised police for insufficient resources three years ago when he was attacked at Corio. More recently he posted to Facebook images of himself

in a neckbrace while in hospital after sustaining injuries in another bashing earlier this year.

He also posted images of facial injuries he sustained last year in an undisclosed incident.

Trickey used the Facebook page to regularly comment on public affairs and to speak out against violence.

The site’s new administrators declined to comment on Trickey.

Hospital creating jobs

By NOEL MURPHY A $277 million first stage of an Epworth Geelong hospital under construction at Waurn Ponds has generated 250 jobs and 30 apprenticeships, according to its chief executive officer.

Damian Armour said the hospital would eventually create 900 jobs plus indirect employment for other workers.

Epworth had received more than 400 expressions of interest for employment when the hospital opened in 2016, with recruitment to begin late next year.

“There will be ongoing employment for in excess of 580 (full-time-equivalent) staff following the commissioning of the hospital, including medical, nursing, diagnostic, allied health, administrative and support services staff,” Mr Armour said.

Earthworks at the 10-hectare site on Pigdons Rd began late April. Construction firm Brookfield Multiplex has engaged several contractors including Geelong’s Norris Plant Hire and Geelong Fire Services.

Mr Armour said the slab would be poured with extra teams of workers on site in the next month.

The hospital would comprise a six-storey building with 254 overnight and 12 intensive-care beds, nine

theatres, two catheter laboratories, an emergency department, consulting suites, an education precinct and retail space.

Seventy “shell beds” would be completed in the first stage, with their fit-out finished in the second.

They will become six ICU beds and 64 overnight inpatient beds.

The hospital will offer a broad range of specialties including chemotherapy, renal dialysis, maternity, cardiology, orthopaedics, general surgery, general medicine, respiratory medicine and rehabilitation. A therapy space and outpatient services plus pathology, diagnostic imaging and back-of-house hospital functions will also be included.

The project has been a political football, with State Government summarily injecting $50 million into the hospital to incorporate public health care services promised for Waurn Ponds.

In April Bellarine Labor MP Lisa Neville demanded the state Ombudsman probe the arrangement because “something stinks”.

OCEAN Grove’s Aine Tyrrell has moored her heart along from her West Ireland home.

That’s the way with ramblers; an ability to settle their feet on shifting ground. With this Irish gypsy, it’s a trait that extends to her artistic career as well.

Musician, lyricist and mum to three, Aine is taking to the road to record an album that’s been 10 years in the wings - in a Bedford bus.

Couldn’t stand being confined to a studio, she says.

And true to a roving spirit, she’s doing likewise with the financing of the album, through crowdfunding, the indie platform that brings performers and patrons together at an almost visceral level.

It’s a collaboration that Aine says the old Bedford transport will help her repay.

“I get to make this album with you and for you,” she’s telling her fellow travellers.

“The best part of playing music is connecting with all of you by sharing my stories and in turn hearing all your stories.

“So you get an album but we can also connect through all the rewards that are here. Drink green smoothies together, teach you tin whistle, go for a surf ... ” It’s a different approach but one eminently suitable for a woman who busked her way around South America, who’s worked or shared stages with Damien Dempsey, Declan O’Rourke, Paddy Casey, Mundy, Roesy, Luka Bloom, Katell Keinig and, more recently here in Oz, with Clare Bowditch.

It’s a journey, of course. Like she lilts in What’s For You: ’Sun peeking through the cloud it’s revealing, Follow where that beam is, Cause it’s shining down showing you what your dream is.’

Aine’s clever confluence of folk and Irish moods and melodies has received critical acclaim since her arrival at Australian festivals and stages recently, following a maternal hiatus of some years.

Her forthcoming album is aimed at bridging that gap.

Parks’ future up for ‘discussions’ THE future of open space in greater Geelong is up for public discussion, according to City Hall.

Cr Bruce Harwood said City Hall wanted residents to have their say on a new “long-term framework” for the city’s parks and reserves.

“There’s no doubt we have beautiful parklands and reserves that are well-used and loved. It’s now time for people to feed into the online survey to tell us when and how they are using parks and green spaces so we can plan for the future.”

EXCELLENT rain during June has lifted the region’s water storages back over 70 per cent of capacity.

Barwon Water measured 72.4 per cent earlier this week as the storages continued climbing toward three-quarters full.

The entire region recorded well-above-average rain in June for a promising start to winter.

The Geelong area received over 140 per cent of its June normal, 46mm, with totals generally over 60mm across the urban area.

Otway ridge towns Lavers Hill and Beech Forest received 296mm and 257mm respectively.

The causes of the June drenching were largely the series of very active low-pressure systems that crossed the region in the final eight days of the month. These warm-cored systems passed over the state and Bass Strait, bringing wild, cold and mainly overcast wintry weather with strong wind gusts and sometimes squally rain.

Strangely enough, the wettest 24 hours were up to 9am on 15 June when another slow-moving low produced 20mm at Geelong.

Rain was recorded on 17 days for the month.

Somewhat surprisingly to many people, the temperature averages for June were above

Letters Put circuses to public I ENDORSE the comments of Eroni’s Circus’ Cathy Maynard that Surf Coast ratepayers and visitors, not councillors, should decide whether the shire should allow circuses with animals (Independent, 27 June).

If people don’t wish to go they don’t have to but people who pay to see a circus with their hard-earned cash should be allowed. We still live in a democracy or is Torquay not part of Australia?

I can hear radicals saying, ‘Oh, the animals don’t get a say’. Fish don’t have a say on whether they are caught to eat, so should fish-and-chip shops be banned?

Circuses look after their animals, providing water, shelter and food and training them with kindness.

Cr Margot Smith complained about an elephant at a circus on the Surf Coast some years ago, saying it looked stressed. What is her qualification to make that judgement?

I have worked with elephants in Australian circuses and attended the Surf Coast circus. The elephant was not stressed.

Torquay’s foreshore Elephant Walk Park is an ideal location for Mrs Maynard to set up Eroni’s Circus but is controlled by Great Ocean Road Committee of Management, which disallows circuses on the site. Circuses had used it for over 60 years without damaging the coastline.

Come on, Surf Coast council and Great Ocean Road Committee of Management, let Eroni’s show and let the public decide.

Climate of exaggeration RAY BLACK is under a serious misapprehension if he thinks the IPCC has got it right on climate change (Letters, 27 July). He alleged that carbon dioxide (CO2) drives climate change. Sorry, it doesn’t.

The Non-Governmental International Panel on Climate Change (NIPCC), along with 31,400 scientists, dispute IPCC claims. Many scientists now query the IPCC view that CO2 is primarily driving climate change.

The NIPCC points out that global temperatures over the past 17 years have gone sideways despite the rapid increase in CO2 emissions.

The IPCC is using cherry-picked data and exaggerating the impact of fossil fuels on climate, so the IPCC’s conclusions should be taken with a grain of salt. A royal commission should be convened on cli-

Avalon spur potential left to run off track DESPITE well-intentioned showmanship on Avalon Airport (Independent, 27 June), who is actually going to do the heavy lifting, given the political allegiance in-balance, to get Avalon’s rail spur back on track?

While it’s acknowledged Avalon has potential to be a regional game-changer from a tourism and fresh-food-export-hub perspective, as the Napthine Government’s pledged and funded rail spur is now downgraded to inquiry nonstatus, who will go in to bat for Avalon and ask the hard questions?

Deconstructing the key players tells the tale of the talk but not the walk.

G21 rates Avalon as a state election priority at number six, favouring a Yarra St pier, a Geelong Future Cities initiative, addressing disadvantage, Apollo Bay’s harbour precinct and Armstrong Creek. All are commendable but where’s the nous?

It gets worse for G21 – the well-documented rail spur pledge funding and downgrade has been left a blank on the coalition’s commitment space, as is indeed the case for the ALP, with barely a whimper of protest from its Member for Lara, John Eren. Couldn’t Lara do with an up-and-about Avalon and fuller employment?

When push comes to shove, Mayor Darryn Lyons, a Liberal Party member, and his nowensconced confidante former Liberal MP for South Barwon, Alister Paterson, are unlikely to rock the boat.

The Avalon rail spur, in monetary terms’ mate to test the veracity of global warming claims before Australia squanders billions of dollars trying to achieve the unachievable.

In his letter, Mr Black again sought to gag me on climate change. I challenged him in May last year to a debate on climate change, which he accepted before withdrawing at the last minute.

If he is so right and I’m so wrong it should be a relatively easy matter to demolish my arguments in a public debate, so my offer still stands.

I welcome the opportunity to debate Mr Black on climate change at any time he so chooses.

It’s not by choice; I would rather go from Avalon but no flights are available.

It’s up to Jetstar, not us.

At one house I couldn’t find a letterbox at all!

Overall, it seems obvious some people place a very low priority on their letterboxes.

Secondly, I encounter many shrubs, trees and hedges hanging out over the footpaths and obviously in the road of pedestrians.

I know for a fact that in some other areas of Geelong the council clamps down on growth overhanging footpaths.

Finally, I’ve come across quite a lot of doggy doo on footpaths.

How disgusting. It’s bad enough on nature strips.

Link the peninsulas SO MELBURNIANS are not interested in East West Link being built.

Good for them!

However, one other link hasn’t been on the discussion table yet.

One must propose a link connecting the Bellarine and Mornington peninsulas, either by bridge or tunnel with road and rail.

Yes, it would cost about the same as East West Link, maybe a little more. But it could also generate thousands of new jobs in construction and tourism for Geelong as well as providing a new route into Melbourne’s eastern suburbs and greater Gippsland without the need to travel via the Princess Fwy. It would also remove road bottlenecks and rail commuters would also benefit from an alternative route via the Bellarine Peninsula to Frankston.

It’s only an idea.

I DELIVER the Indy in the Newtown area and felt a need to comment on my observations from my travels.

First, some people have some of the worst letterboxes I’ve come across.

For example, some are in such bad state of repair it’s not funny, while others are just not suitable or practical.

A lot of people don’t cater for accepting local newspapers, magazines et cetera, although maybe that’s just me being nit-picky.

WE ARE full of compassion for genuine refugees but because terrorists are cunning in their persistence to wreak havoc should they manage to slip past security we cannot allow them into this country until they have been duly processed.

The innocent people always suffer for the deeds of the wicked.

It is unfortunate but this has always been the case as we are forced into taking precautionary measures in order to safeguard the people of Australia.

‘50s not out for Cosma

By EMILY IANNELLO ELVIS, Johnny Cash and The Big O will be among the big names that tribute band Sun Rising will honour at its Geelong gig this month.

After selling out venues around the country, Sun Rising – The Songs That Made Memphis, will play Geelong Performing Arts Centre (GPAC) on 18 July.

The show focuses on the musical journey of iconic American label Sun Records and its numerous artists through the 1950s.

Sun Rising co-founder and performer David Cosma said the show also featured the music of Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Rufus Thomas Jnr, Howlin’ Wolf and more.

“To think that all these big names came from this one little studio is mind boggling,” Cosma mused.

The band aimed to recapture the sounds and stories of Sun’s early years while paying respect to the artists and the label’s owner/producer, Sam Phillips.

Cosma said he put together the show with mate Damon Smith.

“We both have a common interest in early 1950s rock and roll, so we had this desire to pay tribute to those artists and thought it would be really cool to put a show together.

“We present the story in a chronological order of how it was released but there are also some stories and anecdotes in regards to the artists people love the history and stories.

Locals set for a ‘Gas’ A GRIPPING mystery set in Victorian England is set to enchant Geelong’s audiences this month.

Geelong Repertory Theatre will stage it’s twoweek season of Gaslight from 8pm this Friday at Geelong West’s Woodbin Theatre, with matinees at 2pm this Sunday and 13 July.

The play is set in fog-bound London during 1880 when an unexpected visitor confronts lead character Jack and his anxious wife, Bella, who gains a new perspective on marriage and her sanity from the experience.

The cast boasts a long heritage in the Geelong theatre scene, with Ben Mitchell and Madeleine Field in the lead roles.

Jack Laurie plays Rough, Caroline Edwards is Elizabeth and Swinburne film and television student Lily Connor appears as Nancy.

The Victorian thriller will be Melissa Musselwhite’s debut as a director.

Musselwhite said she was particularly pleased about directing Ceres’ Ben Mitchell, whose father Dennis, a local theatre legend with wife Elaine, died recently.

“I performed alongside Ben, Dennis and Elaine for Theatre of the winged Unicorn in shows such as What the Dickens, so it’s really nice to be able to cast Ben in my first directional role.”

Other local input to the show includes Allard Pett’s design of the set, which he also built with the help of Winston Bar and Stuart Pett.

Mary Steuten is the show’s production coordinator and Julie Beveridge is in charge of costumes.

Newcomb date for top novelist BEST-SELLING author Nick Earls will discuss his latest book at Newcomb Library next week.

The humourist with 19 novels to his name will visit to talk about Analogue Men, about a middle-age man struggling to understand the digital world.

Earls has topped best-seller lists in Australia, the UK and Amazon’s Kindle store.

Some of his most-popular novels include Zigzag Street, Bachelor Kisses, Perfect Skin and 48 Shades of Brown, the latter two of which were adapted as feature films. A theatrical production of Zigzag Street toured nationally in 2005.

Earls has also written for newspapers including in Australia and the USA. Newcomb Library said bookings for Earls’ free talk, from 12.30pm to 1.30pm Tuesday, were available at grlc.vic.gov.au/events.

MOST people think of the RSL only around Anzac Day but a potent reminder of its importance arises daily.

The Geelong RSL venue, in Barwon Heads Rd, Belmont, supports the region’s veterans and their families by raising muchneeded funds.

Although the venue becomes an annual focal point, every day is Anzac Day at the RSL. Manager Chris Bennett says the RSL is also breaking down perceptions it’s a seniors-only venue.

While the regular steak night on Tuesdays and parmi-and-pot

night on Wednesdays are popular, the venue is much more.

As well as a 200-seat main bistro, the RSL has a 110-seat function room with space for 150 at finger-food-style events.

“We’re well-suited for private meetings and corporate functions and conferences,” Chris says.

“We also have a couple of boardrooms, 16 and eight people apiece, and they’ve been going off.

“With our new projectors and tables, we’ve really stepped the game up.”

Families think the venue is great with its kids’ playground.

Only twenty Wannik Education Scholarships are awarded each year to Year 11 & 12 indigenous students across Victoria. To have two students from Oberon High School is a wonderful achievement and a reflection on the capability of both Taylah and Staycee. Both students as part of the scholarship will receive $2500 per year for the next two years to support them with their education.

Oberon High School aims to recognize and celebrate our Indigenous culture and history. Recently, two Oberon students became proud recipients of Wannik Scholarships to assist them with their educational aims for the remainder of their schooling.

Each year, Australians acknowledge the historical and contemporary significance of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and their proud culture. At Oberon, all students participate in our week of celebrations.

Throughout the course of the week students and staff engage in a variety of activities which include listening to a series of readings during class time that focus on local and national Indigenous culture and current issues within our society such as racial vilification. Each day relevant Indigenous music is played to accompany the readings and students also attend a special NAIDOC assembly. Junior students also participate in an activities afternoon designed to heighten their awareness of Indigenous culture and important societal issues.

The annual NAIDOC assembly is a highlight for students during the week of celebrations. During our assembly, Oberon aims to both honour and celebrate our Indigenous community. As part of the formal proceedings, students, staff and school captains take part in the traditional Welcome to Country, the official raising of the Aboriginal flag and reflect on the historical significance of European settlement by learning of significant events and dates in Australia’s history. A particular highlight of the assembly for the students is the performance of local indigenous dance group One Conexion led by Lowell Hunter.

This year One Conexion treated the students with valuable insights to cultural information regarding their personal Indigenous background and performed a series of dances and accompanied by didgeridoo music that highlighted particular cultural rituals and relayed important indigenous history. During their performance One Conexion regularly asked the students to participate in their dances and received overwhelming responses for volunteers each time. Students enjoyed the assembly and the interactive nature of the performances by our special guests.

Great outdoor area at centre KARDINIA Childcare & Kindergarten is encouraging children to get dirty in the centre’s new mud pit.

The not-for-profit centre, located at Bell Post Hill, has added the pit as part of an outdoor area refurbishment.

Kardinia Childcare & Kindergarten provides programs for three and four-year-olds.

Centre director Sue Bunting says the refurnished area has been “extended and improved significantly”.

“Children are more stagnant

than they used to be, so we’re trying to bring the culture back of playing outside and giving children space to run.

“We have an outdoor kitchen, a mud pit – which the children love – and a harmony garden where the children can grow their own vegetables.

“We also have chickens and a river bed where the children can take little boats down.”

The new outdoor area incorporates themes from nature and includes many of the children’s own ideas.

Ms Bunting says the centre “worked around the children” during the six months of renovations.

The outdoor area offers children opportunities to “investigate and explore”.

“We’re bringing back the culture of risky play, where children can push the boundaries and experience a little bit of risk and figure out what they can and can’t do,” Ms Bunting says.

“This helps to enhance the children’s social and emotional development.”

IndySport Coach ‘confident’ on fix for Geelong’s fade-outs

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN WHILE Cats players enjoyed a nine-day break as a change from the series of six-day turnarounds they endured during the season, Geelong coaching staff had other worries this week.

An emerging trend of second half fade-outs and a poor percentage put the Cats behind the top four teams in more ways than one.

Coach Chris Scott was adamant at his media conference on Tuesday that lacklustre second-half efforts were not due to a lack of fitness.

“We’ve got supreme confidence that, as on the weekend, when the chips are down we’re running out games well.

“We’ve certainly had a look at it. It’s not something we shy away from, we don’t pretend it’s not happening.

“The objective numbers are impossible to argue against, at least in terms of the scoreboard.

“We’re having a look at a whole range of things.

I think it’s been symptomatic of where we’ve been the last couple of months.

“And it’s probably why we’ve had to absorb some external criticism of our performances. We’ve just been a bit inconsistent and most of those inconsistencies have been later in games.

“But we’re pretty confident we can fix it.”

Scott admitted Geelong’s poor percentage effectively put the side two games behind the top teams.

But he ruled out trying to play percentage catch up, preferring to see his players take advantage and run up a big score if an opportunity presented itself.

He also admitted that a few of the older players were carrying niggles but pointed out so would the veterans of most sides at this stage of the season. “(Managing the older players) is quite complex but the most important thing is that we prioritise what’s best for that individual in any given week,” he said.

Skipper Joel Selwood, defender Harry Taylor – who plays his 150th game this weekend – and mercurial Steve Motlop all pulled up well despite injury concerns.

Scott admitting he was biased about Taylor, declaring him the best key defender in the competition.

“He’s the one that’s really been able to hold our group together as (the stars) have retired,” Scott enthused.

He was also happy with the performance of Jed Bews so far, with some comparisons to defender Corey Enright’s debut.

“He’s got a long way to go before he’s reaching the Corey Enright stage but I understand the comparison in terms of Jed being a little bit unobtrusive, especially the way Corey was early in his career.

“Jed had a couple of weeks off, which is part of his plan, but such is the confidence we have in him he came straight back into the AFL team.

“We’ve got a lot of confidence in the player he can be but even more than that we are confident he can do the job this week, next week, the week after.

“He’s got a lot of developing to do but all the signs are good for Jed.”

Fish reward on bayfront ANGLERS battled atrocious conditions over the past week.

Paul Maher persisted with flicking soft plastics on Geelong’s waterfront to catch good numbers of pinkie snapper and the odd snotty trevalla on Turtleback worms. Salmon were also schooling up in the area, with Paul catching plenty, including one over 3kg that he struggled to land.

Jamie Scotland gave St Helens a crack on Friday amid blustery wind.

He was rewarded with a quality snapper right on low tide.

North Shore rocks hosted Paul Martin on Saturday night. He began fishing with pilchard baits about 7pm, caught a pair of snapper weighing 3.7kg and 4.8kg and went home happy about 9.30pm.

Anglers who fished between Lorne and Apollo Bay were rewarded with offshore winds and reasonably settled conditions. Salmon to 1.5kg were taken from Grey River and Mount Defiance on small metal slugs such as the 28g Asari, while salted bluebait was also successful.

Ocean Grove Angling Club recently had its annual tuna trip to Portland where Adamas Fishing Charters helped members take advantage of some excellent weather out near the shelf.

Trolling deep-diving hard-body lures, the boys were soon catching bluefin tuna of 15kg to 20kg.

The skipper then pointed out a large school on the sounder and down went the knife jigs, returning with four albacore of similar weights. They finished up with some deep-dropping in 150m for a mixed bag of quality fish.

Up-country, Lake Toolondo remained consistent. Rob Waters and son Jet fished with Trevor Holmes on Monday, boating a mix of 11 brown and rainbows trout reaching more than 2kg and 1.4kg respectively.

Trevor has been boating plenty of fish exceeding 3kg, with trolling Tassie Devil lures the best method.

Highton’s Lake St Augustine’s has received its school-holiday stocking of rainbow trout, which kids can target over school holidays with pink or orange Powerbait lightly weighted on the bottom.

Wurdee Boluc Reservoir continued producing redfin from 40cm to 50cm for persistent anglers. Trout over 2kg were also landed.

NORTH Geelong Warriors and Dandenong City have entertained a large crowd in a six-goal thriller ending with a National Premier League draw.

With in-form midfielders Reardo Luka and Michael Anderson out injured, the Warriors’ starting line-up had Darren Lewis in a holding role that pushed Vito Cichello onto the advanced job alongside new signing Stipe Trbuhovic.

Another new signing, Juso Julardzija, was lively early, joining his midfield in unsettling the Dandenong defence with consecutive corners in the opening minutes.

Dandenong was unable to

settle on the ball, with Robert Zadworny almost making them pay in the fifth minute when he met a Julardzija cross only to blast over the bar.

In the 10th minute Julardzija had an opportunity to open the scoring when he pounced onto a ball helped on by Mark Paleka in the penalty area. Julardzija made no mistake, slotting it past Mark Stevanja.

The lead didn’t last long before Dandenong jolted into action in the 15th minute when Sean Seavill received a through-ball to calmly place past the advancing Daniel Zilic in the Warriors’ goal.

Two minutes later Dandenong earned a free kick just off the

edge of the box where Seavill was brought down by Lewis. From the set piece a merge of players formed, Simon Storey finding the opportunity to nudge the ball into the net to take the 2-1 lead.

North Geelong then put together a 10-minute patch of solid possession, opening up cracks in Dandenong’s defence.

In the 40th minute Zadworny dispatched a cross for Paleka to tap in, levelling the proceedings.

In the second half, home side took a 3-2 lead at the 55th minute when Trbuhovic found Paleka advancing toward goal who shielded the ball for Julardzija to solidly finish past Stevanja again in a memorable debut.

The twists continued in the 60th minute when Keegan Ziada took on Warriors defender Michael Grgic in possession, coming away with the ball to provide Seavill a similar opportunity and level the score 3-3.

Warriors coach Mick Colina was happy overall but called for fewer individual errors in dangerous areas.

“It will come with experience and maturity. However, it’s great to keep scoring the way we have been,” he said.

The Warriors will seek to atone for it gut-wrenching 1-0 loss to United at the start of the year when the referee gifted a highly controversial penalty to the Hillmen.
