A LOCAL flight instructor has tipped Warwick Aerodrome to become one of the Southern Down’s biggest economic drivers when an Avgas facility is installed at the airfield in August.

Warwick Aerodrome steering committee member and chief flying instructor Kelvin Hutchinson said the possibilities were endless now that the airfield would have access to aviation fuel on-site.

“With the Avgas facility going in in August it is going to be a catalyst for many other commercial activities to come,” Mr Hutchinson said.

“Fuel drives business, if you don’t have Avgas you have nothing.”

The aerodrome, located about 10 kilometres north of Warwick at Massie, has continued to go from

Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) approved the installation and management of the aviation fuel facility to encourage business growth at the aerodrome precinct at its general council meeting on 29 January 2014, with cost recovery to occur through fuel sales over the next five years.

“SDRC is very mindful of the fact that it has the potential to drive employment and through the training to get people into the community for more qualifications and experience,” Mr Hutchinson said.

And it looks set to soar even higher with the air force currently evolving its basic training program into a more rigorous “centre of excellence”.

Mr Hutchinson said it was because of the success of the basic training and the fact an Avgas facility was imminent that the RAAF selected Warwick as one of only two locations across Australia to implement its more detailed program, which was aimed at getting more boys and girls successfully applying and joining the air force.

“They are here already and spending money already,” Mr Hutchinson said of the Defence Department.

THROUGHOUT the ages, civilisations from around the world marked the shortest day of the year with celebrations.

And this year it was The Glen’s turn to host its own winter solstice revelries, with a brand new three-day festival setting up shop at the Springs 4X4 Camping Park, 25km from Warwick last weekend.

About 600 party-goers attended Sol Sistere: Festival of the Frozen Sun where they kept warm grooving to the huge line up of international, interstate and local artists, including Stanthorpe’s DJ Outlook Selekta.

Techno Tribe Productions event organiser James Blac declared the inaugural festival a resounding success and confirmed he would “definitely” be back to do it all again next year.

“The opportunity to be able to provide a music festival in winter is an unusual one,” he said.

“There’s not too much happening around that time of year, and we think we have something unique to offer people mid-year.”

People travelled from near and far to attend the eclectic event, which promised a progressive music program full of dub, glitch, drum and bass, breaks, techno, and psychedelic trance.

He said he looked forward to working with local suppliers to come up with new products and services as the festival grew.

“We do take advantage of local business in terms of hire...and we also had a lot of hospitality suppliers for staff and crew,” Mr Blac said.

“We want to do more than that to make sure the local community benefits if they are going to host.”

Packaging up job losses

By ALENA HIGGINS A NUMBER of Warwick employees look set to lose their jobs after Integria Healthcare announced last week it would move packaging operations to its Ballina site.

It is not yet known how many workers will be affected, an Integria Healthcare spokeswoman said, however some media reports suggest the number could be as high as 14.

Flood-ravaged roads restored

Maranoa MP Bruce Scott, Southern Downs Regional Council mayor Peter Blundell and Southern Downs MP Lawrence Springborg inspect the reconstruction of Top Swanfels Road near Yangan, which was left gutted by the 2011 and 2013 floods.

THREE levels of government came together on Friday to inspect completed repairs to one of the region’s worst flood-ravaged roads.

Repairs are now concluded on 289 roads in the north eastern corner of Southern Downs in the wake of the destructive 2011 and 2013 floods.

Maranoa MP Bruce Scott joined Southern Downs MP Lawrence Springborg and Southern Downs Regional Council mayor Peter Blundell at Top Swanfels Road near Yangan, which was the site of one of the three largest repair works to undertaken.

Mr Scott said the regional road network was “abso-

lutely devastated” during the disaster and to see the restoration now complete was heartwarming.

“There is nothing better than being out of Canberra and with your constituency and seeing that there is progress being made, where ever possible, lives easier,” he said.

His state counterpart, Mr Springborg, described the critical infrastructure as a “lifeline” for rural residents.

“I come from a rural area myself, and I know our little 5km gravel road is such an important thing,” Mr Springborg said.

“There’s a commercial, a social and a community benefit that comes with these roads, and having a decent road is so very im-

portant,” he said.

All roads were restored to pre-flood standard at a cost of $10 million, jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland governments under the natural disaster relief and recovery arrangements.

Mr Springborg said while the State Government was trying to rebuild infrastructure to a higher standard under its betterment program, the magnitude of the multi-billion repair bill meant stretching resources as far as they could go.

Cr Blundell said the construction work gave the local economy a much- needed boost, with the contractor using local businesses and labour where possible.

Fresh insight into schools TANIA PHILLIPS ELEVEN schools across the Warwick region showcased just what is available to students in the area at an Education Expo held at the Rose City Shopping Centre.

The event was hosted by one of the area’s smallest schools - Wheatvale State School, which boasts a population of 60 students and four

staff. Wheatvale relieving principal Sharon Turkington said the event was a chance for all the local schools to get together and show just what they offered as well as show the local community the different choices available in the realm of education.

She said the event had involved schools in the public, private and independent sectors and highlighted

the way the local education worked together to improve outcomes for students.

“The idea for the expo came out of my school site,” Sharon said.

She said the school would lose numbers to Year 6 and 7 next year and were looking at ways to market themselves and boost enrolments.

The event was co-ordinated by

school parent body member Helen Lewis.

Sharon said the event was well supported by the Rose City Shopping Centre which had helped set up tables and posters and facilities.

All the participating principals were asked for feedback on the event and it is hoped that it will become an annual event.

This column will provide updates on Toastmaster club activities, both within the clubs as well as our involvement in the local community. We also hope to dispel some of the misconceptions about Toastmasters – it’s not all about presenting speeches or giving toasts. It’s interesting to note that the Border Division is the only CWA division that has the special bush poetry section. The contest requires participants to recite a poem with a maximum of six minutes allowed - no mean feat! The poem can be traditional, contemporary or original and must be ‘Australian’ in nature.

Members from the Stanthorpe and Warwick Toastmasters attended as impartial judges. This year’s competitions included interpretive reading, public speaking and bush poetry. The judges also provided feedback to participants to enhance their public speaking skills for their next level of competition which will be the CWA regional finals.

A GLOBAL games program that has been run successfully in Toowoomba and Brisbane is coming to Stanthorpe these school holidays.

“Kids Games” is a valuesbased, games-focused kids’ holiday program that encourages all children to participate, coordinator Susan Johnstone said.

Ms Johnstone and three other Granite Belt primary school chaplains have been busy organising the games, craft, music, drama and Bible stories for the event, which starts on Tuesday 1 July.

“We know that in winter it can be tempting to stay indoors and watch TV or play computer games all day,” she said.

“Kids Games gets kids playing together and being active as well as forming great friendships.”

The three-day event will be held at Stanthorpe State School at a cost of $25 per child. Discounts are available for families with more than one child.

Warwick police Acting Senior Sergeant Shane Reid said it was crucial that parents and careers kept a close eye on their youngsters over the next two weeks, not only to keep them safe, but to make sure they were behaving.

“These school holidays, we are reminding parents to be vigilant and responsible in relation to where their children are from both a safety and behaviour perspective,” he said.

“If you are letting them go to a friend’s house or the skate park, just be aware of what they are up to,” he said.

Acting Sen Sgnt Reid said it was common to see a small spike in the number of nuisance and damage-related offences during the school break.

For those going away over the school holidays, he said it was important for residents to secure their properties and notify their neighbours.

“It is always a good idea to leave contact details should something occur and get them to call police if they witness any suspicious activity,” he said.

Airfield fears over powerlines route

By ALENA HIGGINS FEARS the development of a secondary power line from Warwick to Stanthorpe could threaten the future capabilities of the Warwick Aerodrome have been raised at a meeting between local, State and Federal governments last week.

Southern Downs Regional Council mayor Peter Blundell seized the opportunity to speak with Southern Downs MP Lawrence Springborg and Maranoa MP Bruce Scott faceto-face about the placement of the line last Friday, when both men were in Warwick.

Cr Blundell said while there was no doubt the “very necessary” power line needed to go ahead to ensure the long-term security of Stanthorpe’s power supply, place-

ment was crucial.

“From council’s point of view, one of our concerns is that we don’t want to see a restriction to what we can do at the Warwick Aerodrome because of the placement of that particular piece of infrastructure,” the mayor said.

“So while we are totally supportive of the fact that it needs to happen, we just need to make sure that it is in the right place - and early on in the planning process so later on we don’t suddenly say ‘hey we’ve got to try and change it’.”

Ergon Energy set up a Community Reference Group (CRG) last year tasked with evaluating five line route options for the proposed 2kmwide corridor, with CRG finally settling on line route 5.

The development of the 110kV

power line along line route 5 has been met with strident opposition from members of the United Land Owners Group (ULOG) and Warwick Aerodrome representatives, who claim Ergon Energy failed to conduct “genuine consultation” with all concerned landholders.

Questions also remain over the need for the $60 million line when increased residential solar power use was taking pressure off the electrical grid.

A graph compiled by Ergon Energy for the CRG showing Stanthorpe’s “actual load” for 2012/2013 was 3.8MVD less than predicted, only heightened concerns.

Cr Blundell acknowledged not everyone would be happy with the final decision.

“Obviously there is still some

determination of where that route’s going to be and it’s not an easy job,” he said.

“Ultimately the appropriate authority, and that will be the State Government, is going to need to say it’s going in and this is the route we have chosen.

“But from a council point of view we would just like them to be particularly mindful of our plans for the aerodrome into the future.”

An Ergon spokesperson told the Southern Free Times last month that the “line route will avoid any areas within the corridor that an independent specialist advises would impact on the Warwick airport now and into the future, taking into consideration airfield regulatory requirements.”

MARYVALE residents are next in line to receive fast wireless broadband after the National Broadband Network (NBN Co.) last week announced its plans to flick the switch.

The move continues the momentum of the NBN rollout across the state, with over 41,232 home and business owners already connected to the network.

It takes on average around 12 months from the start of construction until residents and business owners can access services over the NBN from phone and internet providers.

Carnival fosters young talent

By TANIA PHILLIPS TENTERFIELD Wintersong carnival program wrapped up on the weekend after a week of celebration.

The week celebrates one of the town’s most famous sons Peter Allen while also looking to foster the artist talent of the future.

“A big round of applause is deserved for all who made the effort and gave their support,” organiser Gail Galloway said.

“I was particularly thrilled to see the great turn out from our Indigenous community - who led off the parade and the Elders who gave the welcome to country at the showground. They did us - and our town proud.”

President Leeanne Wells agrees and was pleased.

“It all went off really well,” Ms Wells said.

“When the townfolk get behind the spirit of this celebration - it supports our core aim of developing and mentoring young and emerging artists in our region.”

This year’s event also marked the opening of the revamped Streetscape - performed by Federal Member Barnaby Joyce along with State Member Adam Marshall and mayor Peter Petty.

Wintersong’s main purpose is to help mentor young people with talent who face the difficulties of small town resources. One of the original “graduates” of the event, Josh Moylan, is flying to New York for a songwriting workshop with the legendary Steve Earle.

Why she resigned

By ALENA HIGGINS THE creative mastermind behind Granite Belt tourism has explained her shock decision to resign from her position earlier this month.

Sarah Reeves said a lack of decisionmaking at board level was the main reason behind her determination to quit her post as business and marketing manager of Granite Belt Wine and Tourism after two years on the job.

“We need to move forward and stop going around in circles,” Ms Reeves said.

“If we don’t, unfortunately the region is going to fall behind.”

Ms Reeves, who will continue in her role until 11 July, said the lack of cohesion between the nine-member board and its sub-committees made it near impossible to do the job she was assigned.

“The position is funded by Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) and

membership to market the region, and I could not conscientiously continue when the majority of time is being spent dealing with issues outside of the core responsibilities,” she said.

“In order to function efficiently decisions need to be made and that information has to be passed onto the marketing office so they can effectively do their job.

“When the constitution is followed and everyone understands their role there is no confusion.”

In a letter sent to members advising them of her resignation, Ms Reeves wrote that she was concerned activities were taking place “contrary to the constitution” and added her “ability to market has been hindered over the past few months, with successful campaigns previously approved by the board now sidelined without any clear alternative”.

Reeves said she hoped standing down would spark the necessary action needed to rectify the ongoing issues.

And while not directly related to her resignation, she urged SDRC to come to a swift decison on its tourism model for the region “so the whole industry can move forward”.

Mental stigma still lingering in our minds

By ALENA HIGGINS SOBERING new statistics that reveal one in five young people struggle with mental health, yet less than 40 per cent seek help, have come as no surprise to a local youth health service. The report by Mission Australia and the Black Dog Institute surveyed about 15,000 Australians aged 15 to 19 for psychological distress - comparing young people who were classified as having a probable mental illness against those who were not.

Headspace Warwick acting manager Sophia McLucas said there were a number of reasons young people suffering from mental illness failed to reach out for support.

“A lot has to do with embarrassment and there is still so much stigma relating to mental health,” she said. “I think if you

have a physical complaint it is a lot easier to get support and help with that.

“If you tell someone you are suffering from depression they don’t know how to respond to that. But one in five, that’s pretty high so I don’t know why it’s hidden - we need to be more open about it as a society.”

Released last week, The Youth Mental Health Report also found the rate of mental illness was much higher among females and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, while young people with a disability were also over-represented.

Ms McLucas said adolescence was the time many people first experienced symptoms of mental illness. She said while many people simply got over it without any help, some required ongoing treatment.

“I think technology has a lot to do

with (mental illness), especially in terms of bullying,” Ms McLucas said. “When I was young it did happen, but it stopped in the schoolyard and you didn’t get hounded 24/7 by random people, which is what happens with social media.

“Lifestyle has totally changed from where we were 10 or 15 years ago as well.

“We are trying to save our kids from being hurt or having to deal with anything negative, but then they’re unable to build up resilience and the skills to cope with that.”

Ms McLucas said it was important for parents to be on the lookout for symptoms, and to listen to their gut.

“It’s hard because a lot of what their kids might be displaying could also be common teenage behaviour,” Ms McLucas said. “But they need to dig deeper to find out if there is more to it.”

Hospital’s training role

By ALENA HIGGINS STANTHORPE Hospital has welcomed the official opening of its new on-site training facilities.

Featuring a six-bed accommodation block as well as tutorial and office spaces, the facility has been designed to host Griffith University students taking part in the Rural Longlook Program through Queensland Rural Medical Education.

The Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service deputy director of rural health services Dr Dan Manahan said the program was conceived to give third and fourth year medical students a “good, long look” at rural medicine.

He said training medical students in rural areas often helped the nation-wide prob-

lem of recruitment to the bush.

“The Longlook program has run in Stanthorpe for the past four years,” he said.“Already in that time, we have seen student doctors return to Stanthorpe to further their careers.

“It is hoped that this continues and increases with the facilities in place and operational to support these students.”

Maranoa MP Bruce Scott, who was on hand to formally open the centre, said it was “terribly important” to have training facilities outside of metropolitan areas.

“Bringing that experience into rural communities as part of training is something that is important rather than seeing it all happening in our cities,” Mr Scott said.

Rouse up, readers THIS letter has been sent to the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS). They have ignored the eastern route which would remove all large trucks from Rouse Street, Tenterfield.

Dear Sir/Madam, The east route is the ONLY route that will remove ALL heavy vehicles from Rouse Street.

The trucks from Buxner Way are also the ONLY vehicles that require both lanes to turn into the main street. This is dangerous for vehicles on Rouse Street. There is also a newly upgraded pedestrian crossing near this corner (Rouse/High Street). These trucks on the wrong side of the road also endanger pedestrians.

The trailer is dragged sideways by the prime mover and consequently places huge stresses on the road surface. This road has been repaired regularly because of this punishment. The street widths were not designed for semis and B-doubles. Surely your engineers recognise this.

I hear B-triples could be on their way. Maybe they could use the footpath to turn. Just joking!

Approximately 20 per cent of heavy vehicles through Tenterfield are from the east.

It seems with government land to the east a complete removal of heavy vehicles from the main street, which will grow because of rail closures and population growth, would be the obvious route to choose. Come and see these semis turning into Rouse Street. Watch them use the total width of the road. Hear their tyres screaming while being dragged around the corner. I feel the east route has been shown in your impressive folder in a bad light. Costs are used to show the west is cheaper. But is it really? The east route has been discounted. I assume the hybrid title means the intersection with the Bruxner and using existing roads.

You say in your expensive folder that trucks will come through town, if the east corridor is used, because it is shorter. Here are some reasons why you are wrong: 1. There are 40 and 50 km/h zones through the total built-up area.

2. There are four pedestrian crossings in the town centre.

3. There is parallel parking all through Tenterfield. There are always hold-ups while vehicles reverse parallel park.

Why trucks will use the diversion to the east: 1. Higher speed; 2. No pedestrian crossings; 3. Little or no parallel parking; 4. No stops; 5. Much less gear changing; and 6. Less fuel and wear and tear on the trucks.

The diversion to the east would save time for the trucks over the main street. There would be no heavy vehicle traffic through town. The bypass is for the benefit of the town not the trucking companies.

If these vehicles continue to use the main street, traffic calmers near the hills at both ends of Tenterfield and heavy vehicle signage could be used. This is used in many other towns in New South Wales. However the trucks would use the east diversion because of the benefits to them on the eastern route.

Have vested interests like trucking companies and others affected by the eastern route, encouraged the RMS’s decision to use the western route? Your slanted view of the west route makes me wonder.

I hope someone is listening.

Chickens contemplated WE WERE led to believe that the one million a week chicken hatchery sited here in Allora was in a state of contemplation phase. The chickens were to mosey out to the old Danpork site to become feasts upon television. This writer has not indulged in chicken for many years, the television urging, has not worked for any product that required constant showing. However it appears now that the old Danpork site is so eminently suitable to raising the chickens that the production area is to double. Has this been a gift to the business by the SDRC and does it then follow that if the Allora site awakens from its contemplation phase to supply newly-hatched chickens to the business that sits right alongside the Condamine River that the Allora site will need to produce two million chickens a week! Just asking council, answers please!

I COULD not believe my eyes when I read Tenterfield Shire Council mayor Peter Petty’s comments (SFT, 12 June) that it was not fair for him and his fellow councillors to be criticised for past councillors’ mistakes, referring to the reportedly $5m worth of council investments in bonds with Lehman Brothers that had gone sour.

He seems to have conveniently forgotten that he was a councillor in 2009 when the matter was at its height; and then questions should have been asked and answers sought. None were forthcoming. If Peter Petty had looked at page 75 of the ‘October 2009 Summary of Investments and Accounts’, as all councillors should have, he would have been shocked at the way the summary had been laid out by the Director of Corporate Affairs, Jim Gossage.

On the left it shows a percentage figure; eg 10 per cent for the posting; and then on the right an amount; eg $50,000. Most readers would put it in the ‘too difficult’ basket immediately. So if the mayor had looked at the figures he would have been calling for answers, and considering Jim Gossage’s future.

Warwick Art Gallery director Karina Devine said it was a day that the whole community looked forward to when 120 of the leafless trees in the CBD were transformed with wonderful and wacky artworks for the 10-day Jumpers and Jazz in July festival.

All the artworks are installed on Wednesday 16 July ready for the first

day of the festival on the Thursday.

But this is no quick yarn-bombing activity, rather a carefully measured and planned labour of love that involved hundreds of creative people and many months of organisation.

Karina and her team began planning for the 2014 festival eight months ago when the optional tree jumper theme

was decided. The exhibition attracts entries from professional artists alongside groups and individuals who have a love of yarn arts and enjoy being part of this unique community event. First time participant Marion Watson from Redbank Planes explains why she registered this year. “I am a first time participant with a dream and a love for

colour and crochet” Marion said.

Karters draw a crowd

By ALENA HIGGINS ABOUT 1500 people turned out to watch the best karters in the business ply their trade at the penultimate round of the 2014 Rotax Pro Tour at Warwick’s Sandy Creek Raceway over the weekend.

Three locals, Shane Roberts competing in Rotax Light and Daniel Plant and Nicholas Lane in Junior Max vied for the silverware, going head to head with the nation’s best drivers over the three-day event.

Warwick Kart Club president Peter Lane said although the local participants failed to reach the podium, they did Warwick proud.

“Shane Roberts, he certainly raced mid-pack the whole time, so he stuck it up them,” Mr Lane said.

“And Daniel and Nicholas qualified three and four in a very talented field of 33.”

The pro tour made its return to Warwick after a two-year hiatus, bringing with it more than 100 drivers, their pit crews and respective families.

Mr Lane said Warwick was “blessed” to have such a strong motorsport presence that yielded powerful economic returns for the town.

“We will certainly be tendering for it again next year and indications are that we’ll get it,” he said.

“The club worked really hard in the last two years to improve the facilities at the ground ... and to be one of the host clubs of a premier series in Australia is a reward that all club members are proud of.”

An official announcement on locations for next year’s pro tour will be made in November.

Round seven and the final round of the pro tour will take place at Coffs Harbour, NSW from 18-20 July.

IT had to happen, eventually - like death and taxes it was inevitable that the Blues would eventually win a State of Origin series - none of us were sure just exactly when.

Congrulations to all those Blues supporters out there - enjoy.

I can’t see a whitewash or blue bath coming the way of the Maroons nor a Blue dynasty building. Game three will be far from a dead rubber.

Set for boundary review The

THE QRL and Central Division have set down terms of reference for the long-awaited boundary review for Darling Downs and Granite Belt (Border Rugby League, Warwick and District Junior Rugby League) Region.

The aim of the review will be to determine and provide recommendations to the QRL Central Division Board on the effectiveness of the existing boundaries in the region.

Members of the public, interested parties and stakeholders will be given the opportunity to make submissions to the committee.

The committee will make recommendations on the most appropriate boundary structure for the effective management and advancement of rugby league in the Darling Downs/ Granite Belt region; setting a vision and providing a strategic platform to take the game into the future and to facilitation of information between all levels of administration and participation in the game.

At this time it is anticipated that the review committee will include Central Districts Manager, Rob Crow, Greg Platz, TRL board member, myself as BRL Chairman, and a yet to be determined representative of the Warwick and District Junior Rugby League. A date for submissions is yet to be set and is expected to be announced when the make-up of the committee is formalised.

With the uncertainty of player numbers in the BRL each season, the announcement of the review is welcome news to everyone involved in league.

The review committee has the full support of QRL Chairman Peter Betros and Central Division Chairman Danny McGuire, who I was able to catch up with during the Outback Carnival in Blackall.

Betros says he is looking forward to attending the Gremlins reunion in July. He says the visit will give him an opportunity to experience first-hand the situation in the area.

The BRL and all clubs, especially welcome his visit.

- Casey OUTBACK SUCCESS FOR SOUTH WEST SOUTH West Country made it three wins on the trot when they took out the 2014 Outback Muster in Blackall last weekend.

The BRL representatives headed for Miles on Thursday to join the remainder of the team from Miles, Mitchell, Chinchilla, St George and Roma travelling to Blackall Friday.

In the first game on Saturday – played in front of a good crowd – South West took on Northern Outback (combined Mid West and Mt Isa). In the first 15 minutes Northern were strong in attack but failed to penetrate the tough defensive line set

by South West.

Before the first half was over the ambulance had arrived to attend to an injured Northern player. A suspected cheek fracture was later revealed to be a broken jaw. After the delay, South West hit their straps running away with the match 42 - nil.

Killarney Cutters Coedie Tandy played at hooker for the South West side and had an impressive game scoring a try in the second half.

Once again the talents of the flying Michael Purcell were on show.

The Mitchell winger scored two tries and kicked two conversions. Tenterfield’s Jesse Murphy also scored in the second half.

South West try scorers were Danny Flynn; Marcus Cochram (2); Michael Purcell (2); Coedie Tandy; Nathan Adcock; and Jesse Murphy.

Central West fielded an almost unchanged side from their original side named in May for the 25th Battalion carnival in their opening game against Northern. They got off to a slow start, with Northern scoring first before finally settling into their game plan. Northern had lost several

players with injury and Central West ran out winners 42-6.

In the final to determine the 2014 Outback Champions, Central West came out strongly against the undefeated South West side. There were some early blows traded and some tough defence as South West saw off a tough opening 15 minutes.

At half-time South West held a two-point lead with the scores at 8-6. The defence from both sides kept attacking opportunities to a minimum.

Killarney captain coach John Trindall and Michael Purcell both scored in the first half.

In the second half South West came out determined to hold on to their title and got an early breakthrough.

They quickly put on points on the board and late in the second half held a 26-6 lead and looked to have the game sewn up. A try to Central brought the scores to 26-10 and gave them the sniff of an upset.

In a determined late charge South West responded to the challenge, piling on another unanswered 18 points to claim the Outback crown for the third year in succession.

The final score 44-10 in no way reflected the quality of this game.

Michael Purcell was once again a star performer for South West and for the second year was named Player of the Carnival.

Despite some outstanding performances from the Border Rugby League representatives only one, Jim Loneragan was selected in the Queensland Outback side to tour Thursday Island in July. John Trindall was named as first reserve and will slot in to the team if there is a withdrawal.

An Under 19s competition was bought back into the Muster program this year. South West and Central West combined to form a Southern side and Mid West and Mt Isa combined to form the Northern team.

Tenterfield Tigers player Jesse Murphy was seconded in to the Southern side and their game followed shortly after the first win of the South West side. Southern had the pace and game form and ran out winners 28 to 8.

Murphy who played well in both the A Grade and Under 19 sides has been selected in the Under 19 Outback side to play in Rockhampton on July 12.

The Carnival was once again a great success and provides an important pathway for players from our competitions. At the carnival were QRL Chairman Peter Betros, South West Chairman Danny Maguire and recently appointed manager of South West Division Rob Crow. All were impressed with the high standard of football over the weekend.

SUCCESS FOR SWEENEY MICHAEL Sweeney emerged the victor in the Summit B Grade singles championship decided last weekend.

In the lead-up to the final games Sweeney was too strong for Phil Davis, taking a 25-2 win in the first round. Kurt Empen and Artie White had a close tussle in their game with Empen taking the honours 25-22.

That left Sweeney and Empen to battle it out for the championships. Sweeney was playing good bowls and his good form stayed with him in the final which he won 25-13. The games were marked by Quinton, Dale Barker and President Darren.

While the B Grade Singles were being decided, a social match was underway. Attilio Zamprogno and Eddie Zanatta defeated Joe Zeppa and G. Wilmot 15.

Attilio also picked up a meat tray and Quinton Stanley was also rewarded for his efforts during the afternoon when eh also won a meat tray.

A reminder that the ladies play again this Thursday. On Friday night the club is holding a barbecue dinner for bowlers, family and friends.

The cost of is a very affordable $14. The bar will be open and darts and pool are available to patrons.

WHO RUNS THE SHOW AS an increasing number of officials, coaches and players complain this season about the impact Origin has on the stars of the game and their clubs, the view of Channel Nine boss David Gyngell will hardly come as welcome news. It also begs the question of who runs Rugby league anyway?

State of Origin comprises 20 per cent of the game’s overall value and until an alternative is proposed that would increase revenue, the NRL should not consider altering the scheduling of Australia’s biggest sporting event. That is the view of Channel Nine boss David Gyngell, who rejected suggestions his network was inflexible on the scheduling and said he was sympathetic to clubs who lost players because of Origin duty or had to rely on them to back up just days after the fierce contests. ‘‘I am only inflexible until I hear a better idea and I think my inflexibility can actually protect the growth of the game,’’ Gyngell said. ‘‘If it ain’t broke then don’t try to fix it. Until Channel Nine is convinced there is a better way of commercialising football for the shareholders, which are the clubs, then don’t kill the goose that laid the golden egg.’’

Jonathan Brown has played his last game for the Brisbane Lions.

BROWN AND OUT CONCUSSION has done what AFL players have been unable to do for more than a decade - stop Jonathan Brown.

The Lions’ legendary tough man and one of the last players from the Lions glory premiership years has announced his immediate retirement after yet another serious concussion.

Flanked by family, friends, the entire Lions playing group and former coach Leigh Matthews, Brown made his retirement official at the Gabba after receiving medical advice. The risks of returning, he said, were simply too great.

Brown says he wants to simply be remembered as a man who gave everything for the cause as he ends a decorated AFL career that spanned 256 games and three premierships.

Brown made his decision last weekend and advised his coach and former playing partner Justin Leppitsch of the decision on Sunday. He spoke to the playing group hours before making his decision public. His departure leaves Ash McGrath as the only current Lions player to have enjoyed the heady years of the triple premierships.

Brown’s toughness was legendary and it wasn’t long before his mark against Hawthorn in 2002, where he ran 40 metres before crashing through the pack, never taking his eyes off the ball once, was used as an example of his courage on the field.

It was that typical Brown bravery that also saw him suffer a series of head injuries as he put his body on the line time and again. After bouncing back from serious facial injuries and numerous concussions, this time the star Lions player took

COOL START WARM WIN LADY Luck was on the side of the Warwick Pennant’s players last Sunday. Division Three players ventured down the road to a chilly Stanthorpe start but returned warmed by a 5/2 win.

It was not such an early start for Division Four; they hosted Goombungee. Using their local knowledge they had 3/2 win.

On Sunday Division three play at Borneo Barracks and Division four travel further afield to Crows Nest.

AFTERNOON GAME FOR SPORTERS STANTHORPE Sporters stepped out for their first afternoon round of golf in 2014 and finished with a wet tail.

A little moisture proved no issue for eventual winner Jim McPherson and runner-up Rod Werner. The run-downs went to Mark Lynam who also had the Best Gross and Aaron Simmers.

This Thursday is our Red Rooster sponsored day with 12.30 start. Skips please advise the club if unable to attend by noon.

Saturday we have the visit by Gaythorne RSL, arrive 11.30 for lunch followed by bowls, Visitors have 27 bowlers playing, so members we require an equal number to match same. Deadline Thursday if wishing to play and also lunch requirements needed for catering.

SOUTHERN CROSS BOWLS CLUB LAST Sunday the Warwick Health Services social club sponsored the afternoon and after a lovely barbecue lunch we enjoyed a game of bowls. The

winning team was Steve Hiam, Prickles and Mick Rawlins on the highest winning margin.

WARWICK CROQUET CLUB A “Come and Try Day” during Seniors Week is in the planning stage and will be conducted in conjunction with the WIRAC display which the club mounts every year.

An informal sub-committee is busy designing the dressing of a tree for Jumpers and Jazz which, upon completion, may be viewed near the Commonwealth Bank.

This is a rather more creative activity than the recent working bee when members painted the four arbours around the lawns, together with five garden seats.

Hoops, pegs and clips have also been re-painted and we expect to have the exterior of the clubhouse painted in the spring.

Our recent Gala Day was a great success with visitors from two Toowoomba clubs and the Stanthorpe club joining us for a day of Association and golf croquet.

BY ROY PARRY WARWICK junior boxer Randy Gonzalez travelled to Bribie Island on Saturday, fought and defeated his opponent then travelled back to Warwick that night. This was an amazing effort from a lad who is only 14 years of age. Randy has now had two bouts from two unanimous decisions in his favour and looks to have a bright future in the “gentle art” of boxing.

Professional middle-weight boxer Shane Parry of Warwick is at present having a spell from the sport while he battles a dose of the flu.

Professional lightweight boxer Kyle Teer fights next week in a large promotion in Toowoomba.
