Put to the test NOOSA’S emergency service crews were put to the ultimate test at Teewah recently - and they passed with flying colours. The emergency crews responded to a simulated beach crash involving a four-wheel-drive, which had collided with a mini bus carrying tourists. A total of 14 people required immediate evacuation and crews were required to work together to achieve the fastest and safest response times.

Noosaville’s music fest NOOSA could soon be host to its very own major music festival, with a largescale concert planned for Noosaville in September.

Expected to run from noon to 10pm, the live music festival will feature big-name Australian acts performing alongside local talent, in what is

planned to be a “grass-roots, familyfriendly event”.

East Coast Originals’ member and event organiser Marcus Pluckhahn said over half the acts will be local bands and solo artists, with the festival showcasing Noosa talent who will share the stage with some big acts.

With an expected ticket price of

only $40 for an adult, the concert will offer a cost-effective alternative to other festivals such as the Caloundra Music Festival where event-goers can pay $174 for a weekend pass, or the Big Pineapple Festival with a starting price of $72 for an adult.

Originals and Cooroy Originals, said the concert will be family-friendly and is designed to help the community, with local businesses and tourism operators expected to benefit from an influx of visitors to the region.

The funds raised from the event will go directly to the Noosa Tigers’ AFL Club as well as provide financial

support for both the Peregian Originals and Cooroy Originals, which are organised by the volunteer-based East Coast Originals’ team.

Community consultation is currently underway with a public meeting held at the Tigers’ clubhouse last night to hear the concerns, as well as support, from local residents and businesses.

IT’S nice to be back with the opportunity to put my thoughts to everything Noosa on and off the sporting arena.

Allow me to kick off with two different sporting stars who, in my opinion, achieved everything possible in chasing their dreams.

Ladies first, the delightful former top ice-skater Nita Soloman, who for whatever reason took up triathlon at age 60.

I can never forget Nita’s smile as she crossed the finish line and her enthusiasm knowing she had added another notch to her bucket list.

In 1996, Nita put them all to shame, first winning her national age title before conquering her Everest – the gruelling Hawaiian Ironman triathlon.

I suppose her greatest thrill came when invited to be part of the 2000 Olympic torch relay.

And I can vouch for it - that was a day never to be forgotten.

If she had one fault, it was her love of Aussie Rules and the Sydney Swans. You didn’t interrupt her when they were on the screen.

It was always a delight to call her name as she raced and didn’t mind some heckling every now and then.

Her first Tri was on the Gold Coast 1991 when a very young

All great achievements but I am simply blown away as to why he pulled the pin with what I believe would have been the icing on the cake, 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

I am aware the national Sevens squad and headquarters are based in Sydney and it would be hard to leave the Sunshine Coast.

But mate, I truly believe you deserve to be an Olympian and join the list of John Konrads, Pat Rafter, Dawn Fraser, Bill McCabe, Brittany Elmslie and Tim Armitrano.

I get into trouble every time I have the honour of interviewing Michael, as I can’t help bringing up the most remembered performance most Queenslanders can’t forget - that winning shot at goal in teeming rain at the Sydney Football Stadium, NSW 14 to Qld 12.

I know I speak for many Snoz, congratulations you have been and are a magnificent sportsman and a hero to many.

CARA meeting announcement SIX months have passed since councillors took their seats on the newly reformed Noosa Council and on Thursday 19 June Mayor Noel Playford will speak at the Cooroy Area Residents’ Association (CARA) meeting from 6pm giving an update on council progress.

In a statement to the media, CARA said the audience can expect to hear about the “hard work of Mayor Playford and his fellow councillors have undertaken to kick-start the admin-

istration and governance of the new council, and to implement policy changes and election promises”.

There will also be a question and answer session on the night where residents can make suggestions on what assistance or role council can provide to help achieve goals of members and the community in relation to the hinterland and shire-wide issues.

ments to the Noosa Plan, the new Biosphere Reserve management structure, and the role of council in supporting local businesses and entrepreneurs.

Party houses face the music

By JOLENE OGLE SINCE 2005, Sunshine Butterflies has been helping children with disabilities but now the not-for-profit organisation is facing closure.

The industrial shed in Noosaville that currently houses Sunshine Butterflies is up for sale, and charity founder Leanne Walsh said the program was at risk of having nowhere to go.

“We want to keep going and if the building is sold, it’s just making it really difficult to be able to find somewhere we could outsource the

day programs to,” Ms Walsh said.

Sunshine Butterflies currently run three day programs, Kiss My Art, Rock-Ability and woodwork classes as well as offer support groups to families and people with disabilities, as well as encourage social interaction and connection.

“By having our own building, it gives us security and allows us to enhance what we have already,” she said.

“It brings everyone together in the one spot to deliver all the programs we have.”

Ms Walsh said all was not lost with the organisation hoping to buy a McKinnon Road hobby farm to offer stability to the group as well as offer horticulture and organic growing groups, plus animal-care therapy.

“Animals just have that ability to be able to really calm kids down, especially kids with autism,” Ms Walsh said.

But, to buy the property, which goes to auction in six weeks, Sunshine Butterflies needs to raise $100,000.

“We’re asking for $1000 from 100 people or businesses in the community,” she said.

“We are hoping locals and businesses can help us to find a place to go.”

The funds raised will be put into a building fund to help the organisation secure the property when it goes to auction.

Peregian Supporters Club closes for good

By JONATHON HOWARD IT was the farewell many Peregian Surf Life Saving Club members and employees had been dreading - but one that seemed inevitable.

Peregian Surf Life Saving Club president, Brett Leckie, put minds at ease on Sunday 8 June, when he announced on Facebook that the Peregian Supporters Club (upstairs) would close permanently.

Whether it was a lack of members, financial strain (following a club audit) or something more remains a mystery, however, one positive is that the Peregian Surf Life Saving Club (downstairs) will continue unaffected.

Mr Leckie took the opportunity to thank the staff, committee and volunteers for their “tireless efforts”.

A total of 18 full-time and casual staff had been anxiously clinging to hope that the club would re-open

Peregian Supporters Club manager, Martin Isherwood, said the team had worked hard to put the club back on top but his time had been cut short.

Mr Leckie said the club was left with one final decision - when to close.

“It is with deep regret that not even Batman can keep the Peregian Supporters Club open. After an extensive audit process we were left with only one decision to make,

which weekend does it happen.

So this weekend was it,” he posted on the Peregian Surf Life Saving Club’s Facebook page.

“Today (Sunday 8 June) will be the last day of trade so come in and say farewell.”

“The Peregian Lifesaving Club downstairs will continue unaffected by the closure upstairs.”

Mr Leckie said the future of Nippers, cadets and patrols would all continue starting in September.

Markets and Sizzle will also continue as usual. However, Mr Leckie said these activities would need ongoing volunteer support.

“We are now looking at our options for upstairs, so watch this space,” he said.

“To all the Supporters Club Members, thank you for your support and patronage over the years.

We are sorry that the end came so quick.”

NOOSA Council could soon have greater power to shutdown nuisance party houses under proposed amendments to the Sustainable Planning Act. Changes to the legislation were proposed in State Parliament on Tuesday, 3 June, and would allow for a “party house restricted area” to be set in place by council.

Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning, Jeff Seeney, said the amendment would deal with problems when residential dwellings were regularly hired, rented or leased for the purpose of hosting events.

Mr Seeney also took a shot at the previous Labor Government’s lack of planning, which, he said had paved the way for nuisance party houses.

“Their laws allowed events to cause a nuisance in the form of traffic hazards, excessive noise, offensive social behaviour, violence, littering, illegal activities and criminal activity,” he said.

“We’ve listened to community concerns and have already taken action by giving police greater power to deal with anti-social behaviour at out-of- control events.

“And now we’re giving councils the power to decide where these houses can operate in their local area.”

The changes would require existing or future houses wanting to host regular parties or events to obtain development approval from council.

Acting Mayor, Bob Abbott, who has stepped into the mayor’s role while Noel is away on holidays, said it was a positive move for the region - “but the devil will be in the detail”.

“Council is awaiting further details in relation to the party house law changes,” he said.

Mr Abbott said several houses had been identified as breaching the party house laws, including one residential address that had consistently hosted weddings.

Member for Noosa, Glen Elmes, said he was pleased that councils now had the power to regulate the operations of party houses.

“They come in where they are not wanted and compete most unfairly with legitimate holiday accommodation providers who do the right thing,” Mr Elmes said.

“This is a win for local neighbourhoods and their quality of life.

“The new council powers honour an election promise I made to help target the problem in Noosa of large homes being converted into mass rentals.

“It has been an issue of great concern to residents unfortunate enough to live adjacent to one.”

Mr Elmes said he would be happy to give Noosa Council all the support it needed to see the new legislation applied once it was passed through parliament.

Emergency crews sharpen up From front page The exercise involved Noosa Police, Fire and Rescue, Ambulance, State Emergency Services and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

The accident was so real that several beach goers stopped to offer their assistance during the hypothetical emergency.

Noosa Fire and Rescue Area Commander Rob Fray hailed the operation a complete success and said the test proved the region was ready to deal with major incidents.

“The beaches, particularly around Teewah, are extremely busy and this was a very real

scenario for emergency crews,” he said.

“I’d like to praise the efforts of all those involved and give a special thank you to those 14 cadets who volunteered as simulated victims at the scene.”

Mr Fray said fire crews also tested new light weight jaws-oflife and deploying fire-fighters from helicopters.

“Through this exercise we’ve been able to test our interoperability with other emergency response crews and strive towards operational excellence,” he said.

McReight, also praised the efforts of all emergency service crews and said it was great for the community.

“It took about 20 to 30 minutes for emergency services to respond,” Snr Sgt McReight said.

“The exercise was great training, very challenging and interesting for young officers to see all of the emergency service crews working together.”

Snr Sgt McReight said the police role during an emergency situation was to cordon off the area and, once under control, start investigating the incident.

Helicopter support was provided by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter during a recent simulated crash at Teewah.

Junction plea for customers

By JONATHON HOWARD NOOSA Junction businesses are struggling, according to several operators, who are calling on customers to “come back”, as they continue to campaign for new parking bays.

There are now more than 24 outlets available for lease along the once busy Sunshine Beach Road - with that figure expected to rise in the near future.

Turning the tide on the Junction’s woes has been largely focused on parking reconfigurations, as well as the soon to be launched “Come Back Again” loyalty campaign.

A recent petition organised

by Eat Me business owner, Lizzi George, resulted in more than 440 signatures to have parking along Sunshine Beach Road reconfigured.

The petition proposed the implementation of a single lane angular parking confirguration, which would allow vehicles to park front to curb.

The proposal and petition were presented to Noosa Council on 29 May and it is expected to be discussed by council in the coming weeks.

Ms George said the proposal would not hinder passing traffic, but instead make it more convenient for customers.

“Businesses are closing all the time and we’re struggling to keep up with other areas,” she said.

“We’re not asking to change all of Sunshine Beach Road into parking bays, what we’re proposing is one side (one lane) of the four lane road to become on-street angular parking.

“We don’t want to shut down both sides of the Junction - we simply want to reconfigure one side to allow for easy access to shopping.”

BCU to close local branch

By JONATHON HOWARD NOOSA Junction has been dealt another shock closure following the announcement that the BCU Junction branch will close due to a lack of foot traffic.

BCU branch manager, Anna Kingston, said the closure would not result in job losses and staff would be re-deployed to the BCU Noosaville branch and/or the Maroochydore branch.

Ms Kingston said it was a tough decision for BCU, but a lack of foot traffic and being new to the area were behind the closure.

“We are currently working with our Junction customers to ensure they are aware of the branch closure, and that we of-

fer two alternative branches - one at Noosaville and Maroochydore,” she said.

“At this stage there is no set date for the closure, however our customers will be informed in order to avoid any inconveniences,” she said.

Ms Kingston said the decision wasn’t purely driven by costs, but a lack of foot traffic had led to re-assessment of BCU’s best practice and service for customers.

The prevalence of internet banking was also behind the move.

The decision comes as Junction retailers continue to struggle for customers and talks of reconfiguring parking progress-

es with Noosa Council.

The closure brings the number of vacant shops up to 24 for the Junction.

Further rumours that the Suncorp banking branch could also close were unfounded and Suncorp head office said it was business as usual.

However, several Junction shoppers said they had concerns over traffic congestion and feared a “bottle neck” could develop through Sunshine Beach Road.

One resident, who did not want to be named, said the Junction already offered several parking configurations.

“There’s plenty of parking around the Junction - maybe there could be other ways of boosting the Junction to attract more customers,” he said.

Ideas have since been springing up in the community ranging from more parking on top of Coles, developing underground parking and even hosting more street-based events.

Noosa Junction Business Association is about to launch a loyalty program to encourage

and reward customers to re-visit the Junction.

Known as “Come Back Again”, the deal bonanza will begin this Saturday 14 June, and will run until the end of July.

Customers will be asked to listen to Noosa Community Radio Station 101.3FM every morning between 9am-10am and listen out for the code word after you hear the words “Come Back Again”.

Traders taking part will display a “Come Back Again” sticker on their front window.

“Fighting Masters a waste of time”, says Noosa resident

By JONATHON HOWARD NOOSA Council has been accused of “wasting ratepayer’s money” in its fight against the proposed Masters Home Improvement application near Noosa Civic.

One Noosa resident, Daniel Williams, singled out Cr Tony Wellington in last week’s Noosa Today letters to the editor page (5 June).

Mr Williams accused Cr Wellington of “washing $200,000 of our money down the drain by convincing council to appeal the Masters development”.

An application was made by Masters to develop a new Noosa-based

outlet was rejected by both Sunshine Coast Council and Noosa Council last year.

Masters, however, made a successful appeal in the Planning and Environment Court and had Council’s decision overturned recently.

“For future reference Tony, it is unlawful (to) refuse a development application because it was made by a multinational company, or because it is a ‘big box’ development,” he said.

“Developments are assessed on their merits against the applicable planning scheme and other policies/ documents. In this case, Noosa Council’s documents intend the site to be

used for trade related showrooms, hardware, and garden centres as identified in the officer’s report to Council… sound like a Masters store?”

Cr Wellington said it was absurd to suggest that any council decision was the product of a single councillor.

“In the case of the Masters development application, my motion for refusal was supported by a majority of Sunshine Coast councillors,” he said.

“Furthermore, a majority of both Sunshine Coast Councillors and Noosa Councillors determined it worthwhile to contest the appeal.

“Having said that, I am happy to affirm that I led the charge against the

Masters application.”

Cr Wellington refuted claims the Masters application was consistent with the planning scheme.

“Under the Noosa Plan, the Masters store does not directly accord with any single planning scheme definition, having components that include hardware store, garden centre and showroom,” he said.

“Noosa Civic already has 7,000 square metres of showroom space and that is considered to be the upper limit for the Noosa Business Centre. Adding additional showroom floor area thus conflicts with the specific outcomes that the planning scheme determines

for the Noosa Business Centre.”

“The Masters development was designed to span two precincts in the Business Centre, called E5 and B3.

Whilst the proposal may have been consistent with the zoning for B3, both the garden centre and showroom components are inconsistent with E5.

Thus the development conflicted with both the zoning (in part) as well as the overarching planning intentions for the Business Centre.”

Cr Wellington said his main concerns for the Masters development was the impact on local businesses and the Noosa economy.

Artistic fate in friend’s hands

LOCAL artist Chris Postle is keeping his fingers crossed as he enters the 2014 Archibald Prize with a painting of his good friend Allan Nibblet.

Chris describes Mr Nibblet as a man with “incredible life stories notched deeply in his face and hands”, and said he had a “good feeling” about painting his friend for the art prize.

Chris’s work is titled “Fingers Crossed” and explores Mr Nibblet’s journey from treating muscular and tendon issues in patients, to defusing

bombs in WWII, to now suffering from chronic arthritis.

Chris likes to call Mr Nibblet “the man with the incredible hands” and said he is excited to portray such an inspirational man.

“I felt such an attachment to Allan and his plight as he now suffers chronic arthritis in both hands, yet still pushes on with his lecturing and training on the Nibblet technique,” Chris said.

“He is a legend and I feel so privileged to be part of sharing this amazing

man’s story.”

For Chris, this is the first time he has entered into the Archibald Prize in his 25-year career, but his prospects look good having already won second place with a second portrait of Mr Nibblet in the Mini-Archibald Prize held in Gympie.

Chris will now have to keep his fingers crossed while he awaits the announcement of the Archibald Prize winner on 10 July.

Biosphere restructure

By JONATHON HOWARD CHAIR of Noosa Biosphere Limited (NBL), Dr Sue Davis, has spoken out about Noosa Council’s restructuring of the NBL which she says is a move in the wrong direction.

In an exclusive interview with Noosa Today, Dr Davis said the NBL group had been under a “sustained guerilla campaign” to dislodge the group and which ultimately led to the restructure.

Dr Davis recently announced her resignation as NBL chair, effective from June 30, after Noosa Council agreed upon a restructure of the UNESCO recognised Noosa Biosphere.

Noosa Today asked Dr Davis to answer five questions and her responses are provided in full below: 1. Could you please highlight some of the key successes Noosa Biosphere Ltd achieved during the past five years?

In real terms it has been the establishment of a relatively inexpensive model for promoting awareness of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve program and maintaining a community/council advisory and governance function under an amalgamated council.

We have worked hard to maintain an independent voice, providing spaces for professional discussion in considering community issues. When there have been differences of opinion we have looked at the different perspectives and evidence-base and tried not to get embedded in local adversarial politics. Interactions have been collaborative, informed and open.

In terms of more tangible outcomes these include the development of a comprehensive website, brochures and information sheets, the establishment of the Partners Program, annual Biosphere Festivals, hosting a successful international conference, hosting regular visitations by international student groups and delegations, strategic projects such as the Climate Change Action Plan and State of the Biosphere Report and many, many more.

NBL has recently been invited by UNESCO to attend a series of international biosphere reserve meetings (attendance fully funded by them). They see our progress in six years as a ‘success story’ that they wish to share with other biosphere reserve managers. That is something we can be proud of, yet it is deeply disappointing that we haven’t had that level of recognition and support (by Noosa Council) at home.

2. What in your opinion is driving change and the closure of Noosa Biosphere Ltd (NBL)?

The reasoning given has changed over time and I guess you could talk about the differences between the stated and unstated reasons.

Noosa Council says it’s to set up an entity that is not, in the end, ‘owned’ by Council and can apply for other funding, but really they could have changed the existing company structure and worked with the existing Noosa Community Environment Trust to do that.

In the background there has also been a sustained guerilla campaign waged against NBL since its inception.

Some people, including Noel Playford,

Tony Wellington, Michael Gloster and their NPA offshoot, Noosa Biosphere Association, never accepted the legitimacy of NBL as a Noosa-based, independently minded organization and previously had called for it to be disbanded. So I guess one shouldn’t be surprised that now Noel Playford is mayor that is exactly what is happening.

3. Could you please outline your concerns for the future of Noosa without NBL? And how could these concerns impact the community?

In the short term, we’ve lost about a year’s worth of activity and opportunities to build on positive community awareness, developing Biosphere related tourism opportunities and other products and projects. It is now going to take many months before the new entities will be up and running effectively.

I think there has been significant collateral damage from this whole process as well. Many of the current Biosphere board members and partners feel very devalued and disaffected. It has felt like the efforts of those volunteers who have already been ‘doing’ for the Biosphere Reserve enterprise have been cast aside in favour of the critics who have been standing on the sidelines. Going forward, some people may be completely put off by all the argy bargy over the Biosphere and not want to stay involved. So there is the real possibility of the loss of local talent and commitment from very good people.

4. What message would you like to give our readers in relation to Council’s handling of NBL? Noosa Council went into this biosphere review saying it was all about ‘community engagement’. This is not what good community engagement looks like, sounds like or smells like!

We proposed they set up a cross-sectoral reference group to demonstrate community consultation and to take advantage of grassroots biosphere experience and different perspectives, but it didn’t happen. Also, the periods of time given for community input, and then responses to their first draft, were extremely short. Finally, as a result of the last Council report, a brand new, complex structure was introduced and approved two business days later, with no community consultation.

The minutes of the Council meeting gives little detail but, after the initial establishment of the Trust, it seems that Noosa Biosphere enterprise will be handed to five individuals of Council’s choosing - “Captain’s picks” essentially - with the Noosa community having no say or power over what the Trust does. The Trust will be self-perpetuating and unelected.

This seems to be a strange way to promote ‘bottom up’ management and also demonstrate a shared ownership of the enterprise between Council and the Noosa community. Over time there is a real danger of the new Association and the Trust being at odds with each other, or competing, especially when you consider Noosa’s unfortunate history of power plays over the Biosphere.

5. Lastly, will you continue the fight for Noosa’s biosphere, perhaps in other ways?

The principles of what Noosa Biosphere Ltd has been about are part of who I am. I will probably take some time out to repair and recuperate and just focus on doing some things I enjoy and that sustain me. I have a lovely project I’m working on with the Sydney Theatre Company that is going to be trialed next term, looking at focusing on sustainability issues through drama and the arts with early childhood educators. I will also continue to support the efforts of Biosphere Partner organizations, such as NICA and Noosa and District Landcare, and also reconnect with my creative community and endeavours.

Life goes on and we can all make decisions about what we do and how we do it. I therefore encourage everyone to embrace the Spirit of the Biosphere - showing care and compassion for our environment and our community.

Noosa crime rates down

By JONATHON HOWARD NOOSA crime rates have plummeted across the board during the first half of 2014, according to police prosecutor Sergeant Shane Raison.

Sgt Raison addressed members at the Noosa Chamber of Commerce and Industry monthly meeting on Tuesday, 10 June.

Sgt Raison heaped praised on Noosa Police officers for their “crime clean-up” efforts, including reductions in assaults and break-ins, which he said were more than three times below the state average.

But Sgt Raison said now was the worst time for complacency.

“Despite the falls in crime across the board for Noosa, now is not the time to sit back and feel complacent,” he said.

Sgt Raison said crime could spike at a moment’s notice and often it could take only one or two offenders.

“It’s nothing for criminals to come to Noosa in a stolen car, commit three or four major crimes in less than a few hours and leave again in a stolen car,” he said.

Sgt Raison stressed the need for residents to be diligent with home security, ensure CCTV was installed at businesses and remain on high alert.

“Times of not being vigilant are gone we need to ensure we’re taking all the proper precautions to avoid becoming a victim of crime,” he said.

Sgt Raison also raised the serious impact drink-driving could have on business owners and operators.

Passion for Noosa

By JONATHON HOWARD NOOSA Council CEO Brett De Chastel has opened up about his passion for Noosa in a heartfelt and candid interview with Di Henshaw, during the Noosa Chamber of Commerce and Industry meeting on Tuesday, 10 June.

Mr De Chastel spoke about his past careers, his background as an ambitious lawyer and how he developed his passion for Noosa.

He heaped praised on the first council since de-amalgamation and their co-operative approach towards community issues.

He also labelled Noosa Council as one of the most “transparent and open councils” he had witnessed.

“This would have to be one of the first councils where all six councillors work together on matters,” he said.

“They don’t agree on all points, but once the meeting is over the councillors can still socialise together and talk together about their families and lives.”

Mr De Chastel played a crucial role in Noosa’s historic step towards de-amalgamation and in many ways he helped design the processes which led to the split.

“I think it was the community and community organisation that really led the charge towards de-amalgamation - the passion stemmed from the community, not from one person or myself,” he said.

Mr De Chastel was asked to speculate about the council’s first upcoming budget.

Word has spread that the council will announce “no rate rise” for Noosa Shire, although Mr De Chastel refused to speculate and said it was in the hands of Mayor Noel Playford.

Instead he spoke about the budget as a blank sheet and where sav-

ings had been uncovered.

“We had no data or past records to work from for our first budget we started with a blank sheet,” he said.

“But the fresh start has been a blessing as we have found a range of areas where council can save money for the ratepayer in areas such as vehicle expenses and phone line rentals.”

Mr De Chastel said he hoped to extend his three-year contract as CEO of Noosa Shire and gain another three-year contract at the end of the council’s short two-year term.

All gain from marathon pain

By JOLENE OGLE IT WAS all pain with lots to gain as SPM Law partner Jed McNamara ran the half-marathon at the Noosa Ultimate Sports Fest to help raise funds for Sunshine Butterflies.

The 21-kilometre fundraising run was part of the law firm’s monthly charity drive that aims to raise funds for a different local charity each month.

This month, $340 was raised for Sunshine Butterflies, who focus on providing support for people with a disability and their families.

Sunshine Butterflies’ Leanne Walsh said it was great to see local business helping out.

“As a not-for-profit charity that receives no government funding, we rely on the generosity of our local community,” she said.

Along with Mr McNamara’s run, the SPM Law team donate to the monthly charities through casual dress days as well as encouraging clients to donate, in lieu of the normal fee for witnessing documents, for example.

SPM Law partner Michael Sobey said he was proud to

be part of such a communityminded team.

“The team is always very enthusiastic when deciding on the next local charity to support and love to come up with new ways to fund-raise,” he said.

Mr Sobey said the team was always happy to hear about any local charities that might need a hand - simply email sroughley@spmlaw.com.au to make a suggestion.

Next month’s charity is The Kylie Foundation, which raises funds to support United Synergies’ bereavement program.

MEMBER for Noosa Glen Elmes is urging residents to get their skin checked after he had a melanoma removed recently.

Mr Elmes said Queensland has the highest rates of skin cancer in the world and each year melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer, is diagnosed in more 3000 Queenslanders and claims more than 365 lives. ‘‘I urge people not to become complacent, make sure they know their skin, personally check it regularly and have any new or changed lesions, freckles or moles checked by a doctor,’’ he said.

Mr Elmes had a melanoma removed from the left side of his face and said anyone could develop skin cancer. ‘‘Skin cancer doesn’t just affect people with fair skin, blue eyes and red hair, it also affects people from ethnic backgrounds who may have darker skin and here in Queensland you don’t need to be tanned or get sunburnt for skin damage to occur,” he said. ‘‘We are exposed to UV radiation any time we are outside and this unplanned sun exposure adds up over time.”

Mr Elmes said most cases of skin cancer were preventable if the five sun protection methods were used routinely and consistently.

Think about it SO last year when council spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on works, which reduced on-street car parking along Sunshine Beach road, that was OK? But this year some Junction traders want council to spend millions of ratepayers’ dollars to get on-street parking back?

Sunshine Beach road is the thoroughfare between the Eastern Beaches and Noosa Heads and they want to create a traffic snarl in the middle?

The Junction for many isn’t the destination, so imagine tradies sitting in traffic for no reason wasting time.

Do the traffic modelling study during Christmas holidays and see what mess this creates.

The reason there are empty shops is because people are shopping elsewhere. The Civic and Bunnings draw shoppers away from the Junction.

That’s why the Junction hardware store closed.

The store wasn’t necessary to the community as the community shopped elsewhere.

It’s not CO2 CLIMATE alarmists are keen to remind readers of the latest doomsday predictions from the IPCC. Alarmists mistakenly believe the IPCC is a true scientific body. It is not.

It is a UN organisation founded to promote the views of extremists to demonise CO2. Only the scientifically illiterate believe emissions of CO2 from human activity could cause global warming.

Graham Coghill (Noosa Today, 5 June) refuses to discuss the physics of climate change because it is complex.

He does not accept the results of the latest satellite data that show no global warming for the last 17 years.

The IPCC models did not predict this.

Contrary to what the IPCC believes there is no heat from the increased levels of CO2.

The IPCC cannot claim the missing heat has gone into the oceans because the low-energy radiation from greenhouse gases does not penetrate water to any depth.

Alarmists like Graham may not have the scientific knowledge but they can adopt the basic requirement for any good scientist and that is to have an open mind and not be afraid to learn.

He may be surprised to know there is undisputed data that shows greenhouse gases actually cool the Earth, they do not warm it.

I would like to tell you about my Noosa story ...

My partner and I arrived here in December 2010 to fulfil our little dream of opening an Italian cafe.

I was six months’ pregnant and we knew it was going to be tough, but we were so excited at just being here and we didn’t think about it!

Of course we didn’t expect what we were about to experience in the next few months. In fact in January 2011 a big Queensland flood arrived, we were still travelling every day from Brisbane (where we were living before) and no real estate could approve a house rental to two young guys opening a cafe in Noosa (“you will close down in few months!” they were saying).

And so every day up at 4am to be ready to open by 7am in Noosa. My belly was getting bigger and the rain stronger ...

But even though it was hard, beautiful customers welcomed us like part of their family. I still remember and I always will, one day when the rain was so heavy they had to close the Bruce Highway and we had no way to return to Brisbane. And what happened? A stranger, then a customer, was a time when we surfers used to rile them up a bit but I believe that was just a part of growing up.

So I don’t know what the trouble is there but it sounds like lack of funds perhaps.

This is an iconic surf club (they all are) this has to be rectified by the people of Peregian and surrounds.

The irony is on page 29 in the sports section, you have a full page spread of the Noosa Heads SLSC. There is only one SLSC between the Noosa Heads SLSC and Peregian and look at its accolades.

So it’s the people that support the club - duh! Why then are the people excluded from the meeting on Friday 6 June?

then a friend, Frank Macchia, Noosa resident, gave us hospitality in his house for that night. His family welcomed us like theirs and we felt very thankful not to sleep in the car ... thankyou, Frank.

Then a few days after, Jenny from Fresh Rental came with the good news of an approval of one house in Sunrise Beach and we knew she was doing her best to get it for us. We got it and we felt lucky to have met Jenny, Noosa resident.

That year we’ve been told it was the worst financial year in Noosa’s 20-year history and we couldn’t predict it, no-one could.

Fabio, my partner, could not accept to see our family business closing down and go bankrupt. With his skills and passion for cooking we turned our cafe into a night-time Italian restaurant. Everyone thought we were crazy, opening in the junction in that time, February, and we could see their compassion in their eyes wishing us the best ...

But even without a sign, no ads on the paper and just an Italian flag to be seen in the street, we started it! Customers came and came and even if my boy was due in a few days we worked hard to make it happen.

Joy, Joy, Joy IT seems every local newspaper I read these days has a lengthy contribution from Joy Ringrose. I do hope this is not Joy’s prolonged campaign which will continue on until 2017.

Each contribution has this little gem, “within six months of taking office, at a spending rate of $328 million per day, as opposed to Labor’s average of $83 million per day, the Abbott Government has increased our government debt to $312 billion”.

Now Joy, I’m not saying you are plucking figures out of thin air but if you can locate this new government’s daily spend when every source advises that the last reliable figures are for 2012-’13, I am surprised.

Readers may also wonder why you cannot quote at least Labor’s 2012-’13

People appreciated it a lot and when bub arrived they kept coming back.

We couldn’t afford to close for the birth of our new son and so Fabio by himself cooked and served. Then a few customers, friends, volunteered for those few nights as waiters, dishwashers and kitchen hands. Thankyou, thankyou, we will always remember you guys.

Since then Noosans always supported us, nursed the little bub during the service, and kept coming back.

We’ll always remember the moral support of our neighbors like Donna from Flutters who always told us to keep going no matter what, thankyou Donna.

We did, we kept going and with hard work and beautiful customers we survived the worst moment in Noosa. I will always thank you Noosa to have supported us, to make our dream come true. I will always be respectful of this town. My son and now, the new bub girl to come will aways know what Noosa did for us and hopefully they will appreciate one day where they had the luck to be born. I see in the last federal election you received six per cent of the vote. To me that simply means that six out of every 100 voters deemed you had something worthwhile to say - now those are numbers everyone can understand.

community BOUNDARY MEETING THE EDV - the Eumundi, Doonan, Verrierdale Residents Group - is holding three public meetings to discuss vital information which has come to hand regarding a boundary change in the area.

The EDV has been working for a number of years on behalf of the residents of these areas to affect a boundary change so that Eumundi, Doonan, Verrierdale and Weyba Downs will become part of Noosa Shire.

The meetings will be held on Monday 16 June at 6.30pm at the Verrierdale Hall, 268 Verrierdale Road; Tuesday 17 June at 6.30pm at the CWA Hall, Memorial Drive, Eumundi; and on Thursday 19 June at 9am at the Bohemian Bungalow, Memorial Drive, Eumundi.

All residents are invited to come along and participate in the robust discussion and question and answer session.

CLUB SIGN ON COOROY Community Bowls Club is inviting everyone to its community sign-on day to be held on Sunday 22 June from 9.30am to 1pm at the Opal Street site.

Updating your kitchen and bathroom fittings can make a big difference when selling your home.

Di has more than 25 years’ experience in the industry where she has worked on over 2000 projects from hotels to offices, shops to restaurants and retirements homes to tiny one-bedroom flats.

Di said, when it comes to selling you home, it’s all about first impressions.

Street Appeal: The first impression people get of your property is when they walk up to the front gate. To make a great impression, keep the streetfront neat and tidy. If you have a concealed entrance or more than one entry point, emphasise the main entrance with planting, lighting or paving.

Front Door: The first point of entry to your home needs to feel welcoming, as this sets the tone for the rest of the house. Lighting and mirrors are a great way to add extra light, as well as create a sense of space. Fresh flowers are also a great way to make a fresh difference to your home’s entrance.

Furniture: One of the misconceptions in interior design is that it is easier to design a large space than a small one. But to fill a large open-plan space and make it feel comfortable can be a challenge. Consider what a space in a living area is going to be used for. It is essentially for sitting around with friends and family to talk and maybe listen to music or watch television.

Create a space that makes it easy to flow from one activity to the other. Make sure you don’t only use the television as the focal

point. Position televisions in the same vista as an outside view or some other point of interest so that it is optional whether you watch television or not.

Lighting: Accent lighting can transform a space into a totally different atmosphere. Lighting specialists are very knowledgeable and can often give you great tips on how to maximise the potential of your house to make it come alive.

Exterior spaces should be regarded as exterior rooms as we live in a climate that allows us to spend a large part of our leisure time outside - you can’t simply rely on a couple of candles.

Kitchen and Bathroom: Kitchens and bathrooms can either make or break a house sale. Tired-looking rooms will often discourage people from buying your home. To improve your chances of a sale, invest in some instant upgrades for your kitchen and bathroom. New plumbing fixtures and bathroom accessories such as taps and towel rails can really make a difference.

Bedrooms: Keep bedrooms clean and simple. You have already made the decision to sell, which means you are going to have to pack up your treasures soon so why not pack them up before you start showing your home to perspective buyers. Colouring is also important. Stick to basic white - it’s a great way to let the new owner create their own environment.

Presenting a clean and clutter-free bedroom will help make your home more appealing.

Formed in 2003, Killer Queen has impressed crowds with their fully-costumed performance that

TAKE a glance into the past with three local musicians who lived and played around Noosa in those laidback days when the surf wasn’t crowded and the parking was right outside.

Sunshine Beach Surf Club is proud to present The Way We Were, a night of retro food, cool tunes and great company, on Saturday 21 June from 7pm.

Join musicians Barry Charles, Col Noble and Ewan MacKenzie as they provide the soundtrack to a two-course meal created by Coco’s and Angel’s chef Trisha O’Reilly and Sunshine Beach Surf Club chef Darren Sandilands.

From seedy Saturday morning gigs outside the old chemist on Hastings Street, Barry has forged a strong relationship with the iconic street after arriving in Noosa in 1972 with his guitar and dog Taj, a long way from his Melbourne family home.

A walk around the national park to pay his respects to the original custodians cemented Barry’s love of Noosa and so began a musical golden era for both Barry and Noosa.

With up to five gigs a week in Hastings Street alone, Barry tells stories of playing until 2am then partying afterwards before remembering a 9am gig was booked in the square outside the old chemist, where Aromas is now.

1974 saw the arrival of Col Noble who, at the insistence of a mate, spent a week camping at the Woods camping park where his days were spent surfing and playing music at The Green Cherry Restaurant in Pine Trees Motel.

Like many before him, Col abandoned his show-business career ambitions in Sydney and returned to live permanently in stunning Noosa.

For three years Col enjoyed a regular spot at The Green Cherry, also known as Angel’s, forming what would become a life-long friendship with Barry Charles and his band, The Rockets.

Ewan soon arrived, unannounced, and took up a residency at Coco’s with Barry and many other fine musicians after Col moved on to work in a final residency at the original Barry’s Bistro.

On Saturday 21 June, the three musicians will play together once again for The Way We Were, an event that will take visitors back in time to an era of uncomplicated life, surfing and cool tunes.

Tickets are $49.95 and are available now for the two-course meal and live entertainment that kicks off at 7pm.

Festival’s inside look at the media THE full program for the 2014 Noosa Long Weekend Festival has been released with a smorgasbord of cultural treats on offer over the 10 day event.

More than 80 events are planned for the festival that include an eclectic mix of music, dance, theatre, comedy, literature, forums, supper clubs and so much more.

Festival director Ian MacKeller said the program is certainly diverse and includes everything from burlesque to ballet to cabaret to cocktail capers.

One of the major events the festival is delighted to be hosting in association with Noosa Film Society is the Australian premiere screening of director Bruce Beresford’s two-part mini-series Bonnie and Clyde on 20 July.

“Bonnie and Clyde was one of the most acclaimed movies of the ’60s and this television adaptation will not only remake the classic story but also act as a prequel, delving into where both characters are from and

how they came together,” he said.

“This event will also include an ‘In Conversation’ with director Bruce Beresford and festival favourite Peter Thompson at the conclusion of the screening.”

Mr Mackellar said for the eighth consecutive year, the festival would also welcome the host of the ABC’s Insiders, Barrie Cassidy, alongside colleagues Nikki Savva, Dennis Atkins and Malcolm Farr to provide insight into the nation’s political pulse and answer questions about behind-the-scenes in Canberra.

“This politically-focused forum will consider how the Coalition government is performing and whether it is meeting voters’ expectations regarding issues like the Carbon Tax, labour market, refugees and the environment.

“It will also look at whether Bill Shorten is leading an effective opposition with sound policies on key issues,” Mr MacKeller said.

“This is always a sell-out event so we expect tickets to this session will be snapped up quickly.”

Mr MacKeller said that the program included a range of both ticketed and free events such as the opening of Carnevale on Friday 18 July, which is a free event featuring Linsey Pollak and his band of 22 street performers and musicians known as the Unusual Suspects.

“Everyone is invited to join us as we welcome in our 2014 fesival with a great Carnevale feel,” he said.

The Hastings Street tree will also be officially lit with festival lighting for the duration of the event and is sure to be a family favourite.

Mr MacKeller has touted this year’s festival as the best yet and with tickets on sale now the event planners are expecting to sell out.

So long, Indian summer There were tears in my eyes last Sunday when I was forced to turn the wardrobe upside down to find a pair of jeans and a jumper. I’m just not ready for winter. Since mid-April wherever we’ve travelled, summer has followed us. (So has a little black cloud called work, but that’s another story.)

I’ve been in shorts and thongs for as long as I can remember, even in California in late spring, when the evenings can usually be a bit cool.

And then what a pleasure to arrive in Sydney for the Writers’ Festival and find sunny skies and summer temperatures in both air and ocean. My gig at the festival was called “The Beach Boys” so I was even able to dress for the part in boardies and an aloha shirt, much to the astonishment, I suspect of the ladies in sensible black.

And then, of course, Noosa’s long run of perfectly sunny days and mild temperatures. Until Sunday. I’m sure I’ll get used to it but I might have to buy some socks.

I DON’T want to shock anyone, but today’s surf column will actually contain some surfing, so be warned. I know, it’s been a while, but this is very important information.

The 10th annual Wrecks and Relics Get Together for the over 50s will be held from tomorrow (Friday) in the best surf on offer between Castaways and the river mouth. Don’t be fooled by the term “get- together”, which conjures up images of old folks sipping sherry and swapping yarns by the fire. The Wrecks is a serious, down and dirty surf comp. Although few will admit it, most of the competitors have already begun to wonder how many trophies they have left in them before the arthritis or the gout does them in, or they simply can’t raise that internal keg of beer off the deck of the board without the assistance of a bobcat. Making the final isn’t the main thing it’s the only thing.

When the Noosa Malibu Club - mainly Paul and Libby Winter with a lot of help from Di Cuddihy - came up with this event a decade ago, we were all just feeling our way into the so-called golden years, and the first events were held within a cocoon of goodwill and gentility. There’s no time for any of that now that we’re seriously old and gnarly. As our tribal elder Bill Wallace is wont to say, “There’s not a moment to waste”.

So if you make it down to watch the Wrecks (and I strongly advise you to make an effort to catch some of the world’s leading geriatric surfers facing off, gut to gut, in what looks like being quite good conditions on the points) be aware this ain’t the croquet club. Harsh words will be spoken, dirty tricks will be used (particularly in the over 70s), blood may be spilt.

According to the Wrecks and Relics honorary media officer, Big Wave Bob Wood - himself a hot favourite in the codgers’ division - “some of the best longboard dinosaurs of the modern era” will be competing. I find that sentence a tad confusing, but who am I to question the pen of the wily Woody? In a press release that shouts from the computer screen in bold capitals (the caps lock is middle left, Big Wave!) he also predictably talks up the prospects of his South African diamond cartel associates Berg and Duck, without even mentioning other contenders, such as your columnist. So the psychological warfare has begun.

To be fair, Big Wave does mention the increased number of husband and wife combos competing this year, a phenomenon he crudely labels “old farts and tarts”. Ah yes, it’s on for young and old, particularly the latter. Let the heats begin, and may the best Wreck win.

Ladies rise to education challenge THE third annual Trivielle night, held at the Boathouse, Noosaville, was another roaring success with tickets to the ladies-only event sold out weeks in advance.

The trivia night is held to raise funds for the Australian Himalayan Foundation which support girls’ education in the Himalayan king-

dom of Bhutan.

Event organisers Susie Pitts, Krista Waddell and Heather McNeice will travel to Bhutan to deliver donated items such as warm clothing and stationery.

More than $3900 was raised on the night from a combination of ticket sales, games and raffle

tickets - every $100 raised provides one year’s education for a girl.

A three course luncheon is planned for 15 August to help the women reach their $20,000 goal.

Lunch sun rises for orphans IT’S not all beautiful views and gourmet food at Bistro C with the restaurant appealing to the community’s charitable side at its Long Lazy Lunch on 20 June in aid of Sunrise Children’s Village.

The three course lunch will showcase Bistro C’s eclectic blend of Asian, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and classic European fare while guests are treated to a talk from Sunrise Children’s founding director Geraldine Cox. Beauty today Light shines on effects of the sun HEALTHY skin is an important factor in any woman’s beauty regime including protection from skin cancers.

But with so much choice on the market for sun lotions and with more and more research into skin cancers and their causes, here is a more detailed look at what we should look for in a sunscreen to keep skin at its best.

Leading beauty therapist Sharon Cassidy of Riverside Beauty delves further into what works for beauty needs as well.

Australian Sunscreen Standard The Australian Sunscreen Standard recommends an SPF of 30+.

The sunscreen must also have the expiry date (usually one to two years) and storage conditions.

Sharon said: “It’s not worth the risk if your sunscreen has expired.

“Not only might it not be protecting you effectively from the sun’s rays but the greasiness and chemicals from expiring may also be affecting your skin in other ways.”

UVA and UVB Over exposure to ultraviolet radiation can cause short-term health effects such as sunburn.

Long-term exposure to ultraviolet radiation can increase the risk of damage to the skin and eyes in the form of skin cancers and cataracts.

UVA was always thought to be the less threatening of the sun’s rays and most of us have been exposed to large amounts of UVA throughout our lifetime.

Although less intense then UVB, UVA rays are 30-50 times more prevalent and can penetrate clouds and glass.

Research is now showing UVA penetrates the skin more deeply and plays a major part in skin aging, wrinkling and some forms of skin cancers.

It is also is the dominant tanning ray.

UVB is the chief cause of skin reddening and sunburn and tends to damage the skins more superficial epidermal layers.

It plays a key role in the development of skin cancer and contributes to tanning and photoaging.

UVB rays are more intense during the hotter months from about 10am to 4pm but they can burn and damage skin all year round.

Sharon agrees with the experts.

“Where you can, always try to have a broad spectrum sunscreen and keep applying throughout the day but especially when you are outdoors or driving.”

What is the SPF rating?

A sunscreen’s SPF (sun protection factor) indicates how long it will take for the UVB rays to redden skin when using a sunscreen compared to how long it would take if they were not wearing it.

Sharon said: “The purpose of using sunscreen is to reduce UV ray exposure not to extend time spent outside in the sun.

“Stick with the 30+ where possible and avoid sitting in direct sunlight where you can.”

Chemical or physical?

There are two types of sunscreens - chemical absorbers and physical blockers.

Chemical absorbers are the most common as they absorb the UVR with a chemical barrier.

A sunscreen that scatters or reflects UV rays from the skin is a physical blocker and is mostly associated with zinc creams.

Noosa feels the sting

By BRIAN STOCKWELL NOOSA Lions travelled down the Steve Irwin Way for the main games on Saturday with Beerwah Glasshouse.

The afternoon program commenced with the Under 14 Division 1 side. Both teams were evenly matched and the Noosa boys were determined to come back from a 1-0 deficit at the break.

Coming out with renewed vigour, the Noosa forwards Stephen Price, Michael Martin and Finn Still had repeated skirmishes into the red zone and soon levelled the scores.

In what has become a trend of recent for Noosa, they dominated possession in the midfield and had numerous shots on target in the second half with defenders easily controlling any Beegees raids.

Just when players’ and parents’ hopes were raised, the Beegees’ goalie saved a penalty shot and shortly after they then went on to hit a pearler from a

free kick 20-25 metres out.

Beegees repeating their first round victory in the last minute defeating an improving Noosa side 2-1.

In the next game, Beegees came out in the Reserve Grade game full of running, but the more accomplished Noosa Lions team started to dominate midway through the first half.

Goals to Corey Lovewell, Luke Luke Sheridan and Benny Amson were workmanlike but the goal of the game was from the foot of ‘bend it like Beckham’ Beau Lyall.

His strike from 25-30 metres would have had Mark Shwarzer left in its wake.

The main game was a different affair with the Madill’s Motor Group Noosa Premier Men’s team coming up against the cellar dwellers. Beegees had no answer, other than a few very late and misguided tackles to Noosa’s pace and passing game.

Ultratune and Hangloosa could not be separated at the siren and played out an exciting 7 all draw.

Evolution 4 fought hard but

went down to Misfits 10.

In another closed match up Energex 8 only just got the points over the ever improving young NDSHS 9s 7.

NDSHS 10s 7 had a great win against Madills 4 and Beach Sports 11 ran away with the game against Melco 5.

Finally, in what turned out to be a tight tussle, Aphrodite 4 were first past the post against Cartwrights 3.

Holly, Giverny, Keira and Chloe produced great games.

In a battle of St Teresa’s the 16s were too strong for the 14s with Maggie, Phoebe, Kalani and Lily showing great play.

THE CWA hall was the venue for the Eumundi Swim Club’s presentation night on Saturday 31 May. ‘Break-up’ nights often revolve around thanks, awards and reflections, so it was typical of Eumundi that the evening started with a Super Squad meeting, to look to the future.

Swimmers, parents and coach, Richard McLean, provided each other with interesting feedback about expectations and objectives.

The swimmers had some good ideas for next season and are eager to fulfil their personal ambitions and to act as role models for the younger children, as they target State Championships in December.

After everyone had enjoyed a banquet of curries and desserts, club president, Oddbjorn Ludvigsen outlined some statistics: club membership has grown by almost 30 per cent since last year; there were 18 club nights, with the girls clearly outdoing the boys in attendance and swim points!

Swimmers enjoyed competing in 27 carnivals around the Wide Bay region, developing friendships and healthy rivalries within and outside the club. ‘Lud’ thanked our sponsors for their con-

NHBC was a mecca for many Coast bowlers this past week with two big all-day events drawing capacity fields of 96 players each.

First up was the monthly first

Monday Noosa 1500, sponsored by local travel agent Helloworld, with club bowlers Neil and Yvonne Walsh taking the main prize over Garyth Williams and Terry O’Neill.

The winners of the first-round loser’s pool were Costa Ledas and Kane Sherry from Rainbow Beach.

Runners-up in that section were Buderim bowlers John Taylor and Barry Toby.

Then, on Thursday, we had the Laguna Estate Mixed Medley with teams of four competing in mens, ladies and mixed pairs followed by mixed fours matches- all scored on a point an end and 10 points for a match win. Coming out winners with a score of 84.5 were the Leigh Fortington four over the Kevin Luscombe group with 80.5. Greg Dale’s team from Coolum came in third with 78 points.

In regular play, Geoff Davis and Walter Zemler took out Tuesday pairs from Denis Coulter and NickGelavis. Wednesday ladies triples went to Debbie Austin, Jeanette Emery and Beryl Small. And the ever-popular Friday Jackpot Pairs saw a win to Mel Hobbins and Steve Bowie from Neville Graham and

John Bailey. Saturday winners were Ron Hewson, Frank Turton and Beryl Nelson.

TEWANTIN NOOSA BOWLS THE weekend of Saturday, 19 July and Sunday, 20 July will be a bowls bonanza with two events totalling $2800 in prize money. Saturday is our $1400 Mixed Medley proudly sponsored by Cogill and Woods Legal Services. Two ladies and two men comprise each team. Morning tea is at 8.30am and entries close 12 July. Sunday’s $1400 three-bowl mixed pairs is part of the district winter bowls carnival and consists of four games of 14 ends. Entry forms for both events available at the club. Bowlers intending to enter our popular ladies’ fiesta on Thursday, 19 June are advised to enter without delay.

On Tuesday a semi-final of our ladies’ triples championship was played with Pat Digby, Yvonne Ambrey, Van Vignon defeating Carole Jones, Margaret Dodd, Dossie Buckley. The final between teams of Pat Becker and Pat Digby has

been drawn for Thursday, 26 June.

The ladies’ fiesta on Thursday, 19 June has also drawn solid entries.

The men’s district triples champion of champions event will be held over the weekend of 12 and 13 July at Tewantin Noosa and spectators will be able to watch our local club champion bowlers in action. Our volunteers will be busy ensuring the smooth running of these events.

Tuesday’s Noosa Landscape Supplies event was won by Bev Dickinson, A. Jones from Claire Turpin, Peter Hogan. Options Eye Care Wednesday competition had Bryan Simmons, Dennis Coulter winning from Harry Shaw, David Muir. The Noosa Radiology three bowl triples played on Friday had John Oppy, Glad Sengstock, Wendy Coman winning from Jan Richardson, Judy Diggle, John Hay. The jackpot was won by teams Coghlan and Malseed. With the men’s and ladies’ pennant season approaching our selectors are busy sorting players for trial games. Good luck to all bowlers!

Phil’s army days: uniformed Phil during WWII. Phil was born in 1924 and lied about his age in order to enlist.

A lot of younger members from those days, myself included, learnt the finer points of this now forgotten art from our old club mate, who, to a lot of the dedicated bodysurfers, became known as the Old Master.

Away from the surf club and after being demobbed Phil, along with Maurie went to work on the family pig farm in Pomona which his father purchased during the war.

However after some time on the land, Maurie left to study medicine, eventually becoming a doctor in 1956.

Phil in the meantime had continued working with the family until 1957 when he bought and moved onto a farm in Eumundi.

He stayed in the piggery business until the Butter Factory in Pomona, which was the source of food supply for the piggery, was closed in 1970. After this he went back to Pomona where he purchased a dairy farm working there till the land was resumed by the Department of Education in 1990.

Apart from his farming and surf club life Phil, in 1961, entered local politics and was successful in being elected to Noosa Shire Council, representing Division 2.

In 1995 after a full and very productive life Phil and Nancy shifted to Noosa Waters to enjoy their retirement and spend more time with their five children, Carol, Judy, Reta, Lyn and Gary.

Add to this the joy of eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren, plus the occasional Sunday mornings breakfast for Phil and Nancy on the verandah at his surf club at Noosa, and you have the guarantee of a full and happy retirement.

HE may be just several months short of his 90th birthday, but as we sat on the verandah of the Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club chatting over lunch, it became obvious that my clubmate and fellow life member Phil Cave is still sharp as a tack.

Dates and names were rattled off in quick succession. Occasionally Phil would turn to Nancy, his wife of some 61 years, sitting by his side to confirm a name or date.

Our conversation had started with his school days and this bought a smile to his face.

“You know,” he said, “I started school at four years of age at a place you probably never heard of. It was called Yabba Yale out between Imbil and Kandanga a one teacher school.

“The reason I started so young was to make up the numbers because there were only about 13 or 14 kids and it was in danger of being closed down. The more kids they could enrol the better the chance of the school staying open.”

Phil was born in Gympie in 1924 and left school at 13.

“I went to work on the family dairy farm at Imbil along with my brother Maurie, who was a couple of years older.

I stayed on the farm until I was 15 and then by putting my age up to 18 was able to join the Militia in Gympie on 20 July 1940.

“I became a member of the 5th Light Horse stationed at Gympie. Our designation was later changed to the 5th Motor Regiment, then in December 1941 I got my official call up and eventually became a machine gunner in the 2nd/2nd Machine Gun Battalion.”

During his service Phil was posted to Borneo, where he took part in the savage fighting at Brunei. Maurie, who had also enlisted, saw service in the Western Desert and was wounded in action during the battle of El Alamein.

Returning home after the war Phil had chalked up 107 days of leave.

It was during this time that he joined the Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club and, along with Maurie, obtained his bronze in April 1946.

“Things were a bit different in those days. The examiner who tested us for our bronze wore a coat and tie.”

Already in the club were Jim Clark and the Sealy brothers Bert and Arthur.

“To be able to register as a surf club you had to have six members. Having six

also entitled you to get the government subsidy, which was seven shillings and sixpence in the pound; the pound being 20 shillings. Today that would be 75 cents for every $2 raised.”

In 1948 Maurie went over the hill to form a surf club at Sunshine Beach. He was able to recruit some locals, however after three seasons the club folded.

For Phil this was the start of what was to be an outstanding career in the life saving movement.

Along with his patrol duties, Phil also represented his club in March Past and the blue ribbon event of the time, the Rescue and Resuscitation, otherwise known as the R&R. Also when needed he filled in as a reserve for the boat crew.

In the management side of club life, Phil received his Instructors Certificate and went on to become examiner, or as they called them in those days a Blue Diamond, in 1950.

“The nickname came about because of the badge we wore stitched on to our shirts. It was blue, diamond shaped and had the words S.L.S.A. embroidered on it; thus the name Blue Diamonds.”

Then later in that year he was appointed Chief Instructor of the Noosa Club.

To cap off his sporting career in 1956, Phil had the honour of being chosen as a torch bearer for the Melbourne Olympics; his run taking him from Hill Street, Pomona, to the local Forestry.

Perhaps the highlight of Phil’s lifesaving career came in 1949 when, along with 26 others from NSW, Queensland and Western Australia he was named in the Surf Life Saving Association of Australia Instructional Team to visit Tasmania.

“Our job was to promote lifesaving in the area and help the three local clubs, which were Burnie, Ulverstone and Devonport. A few years later a Tasmanian club hosted the Australian titles for the first time in state history.

“In the late ’40s and early ’50s Noosa was a very quiet place except for Boxing Day and that was always very big.

“One good thing that came out of being lifesavers a lot of us met our future wives on Noosa Beach. Nancy and I met in 1952 and married in 1953. My good mate Merv Schreiber, also a life member and farmer, also met his future wife at the beach.”

Like a lot of life savers Phil’s winter sport was rugby league and for several seasons he played for Gympie Rainbows as lock forward, making the Gympie rep team. An injury to his hip in 1951 put paid to his football career.

“It was this injury that stopped me board riding,” said Phil. “However it did not interfere with my body surfing ability.”

Kids set to be buoyed by Olympian’s visit WORLD Sailor of the Year and Olympic gold medallist, Tom Slingsby is coming to Noosa to lend a hand at this year’s Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club annual Noosa Buoyed Up dinner.

Held on 26 July, the annual dinner supports the club’s Buoyed Up program that allows Indigenous and vulnerable children between the ages of seven and 12 to attend a five day camp where they can complete the Yachting Australia Tackers introduction sailing program along with other skills.

The five time World Laser champion is on deck to lend a hand to the NYRC fund-raising efforts by sharing his

thoughts on the Rio Olympics and the next America’s Cup defence.

Australian Sailing Magazine editor Roger McMillan will also speak on the night and share his thoughts on Australian sailing’s past, present and future.

Program patron and Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Multicultural Affairs Glen Elmes praised the Buoyed Up program.

“I fully support and appreciate the commitment adopted by the NYRC to offer and deliver such a worthwhile program to Indigenous and vulnerable children,” he said.

The Fiona Winter/PJ Burns Noosa Tigers will be looking to bounce back with a big win against the bottom placed Caboolture, this Saturday at Weyba Rd. After an agonising one point loss to fourth placed Kedron a fortnight ago, only four points separate Noosa and Kedron as they strive for a top three position and double chance by seasons’ end.

The Tiger side has much upside to it with regard to returning player personnel with Brett ‘Angel` Duke, Tommy Keehan, Isaac Hughson, vice-captain and assistant coach Tommy McKittrick and multiple club champion Cubby Isles all due to return in the coming weeks.

I suppose the big question for Jimmy Gellie and his match committee will be whether to give those coming off long injury breaks another week or get them straight back into the fray. The Tigers now have three home games in a row with Caboolture, Maroochydore and Caloundra all due

at Weyba Rd in the coming weeks.

Of course the Maroochydore game coinciding with the Noosa Tigers past players day which is always one not to be missed.

LOCAL personal trainer Sean Miller has taken out second place in the junior division at the state body building championships in Brisbane.

The 21-year-old personal trainer for My Fitness Club, Noosaville, competed alongside 852 other competitors at the International Natural Bodybuilding Brisbane Classic, last month.

Sean started training aged 15 at the same gym where he now works, where his passion for body building and fitness first began.

“Me and my brother used to train together at this gym when we were young, I was 15 and he was 19, and it just grew from there,” he said.

Now, Sean will spend up to 15 weeks preparing for a competition with a diet of protein and carbohydrates coupled with training twice a day, six days a week.

“About 15 weeks out I’ll start controlling what I’m eating and measuring, weighing, counting calories, that sort of thing,” he said.

“Training is two hours of weights and one hour of cardio exercise.”

Sean said he still gets nervous when competing, despite this being his fifth competition.

“Backstage was interesting, pretty much all the guys in my division were all extremely muscular and in really good shape for the competition. It was nerve-wracking,” he said.

“But, you know you’ve done the best you can.

So long as you’ve progressed physically from where you were last time, then that’s all that really matters.

“I was lucky enough to come away with second and that’s among guys who were all in really good shape.”

But Sean’s nerves are forgotten once he steps onto the stage, which he describes as surreal.

“Once you’re out there, it’s almost like an outof-body experience,” he said.

“You can’t see past the front row with the lights, so you just do your thing.”

To Sean, body building is a cross of art and a beauty contest with competitors judged on their size, symmetry and vascularity.

But it hasn’t always been so easy, with Sean once weighing in at 115 kilograms.

It takes 15 weeks of intensive training to be ready for a competition - Sean Miller.

“I wasn’t exactly in the best shape, but you can overcome that with consistency and discipline,” he said.

As a personal trainer, Sean said working with his clients helps keep him motivated and on track and he enjoys helping others get in shape.

Sean won’t get long to rest following his success at the Brisbane Classic, with the Queensland Titles on 14 September and Nationals on 4 October.

“It’s very hard to juggle it all. In the weeks prior to competing I become very anti-social,” he said.
